A (Semi-) Omni-WarShip?
« on: February 23, 2015, 12:05:48 AM »

Over on CBT, we were talking about the Sovetskii Soyuz and I dug through some old stuff and found THIS.

Quote
One concept that my group played with a while back was to make the Sovetskii Soyuz into a semi-OmniWarShip.

Yeah, I know.  Take a minute, take a deep breathe, and collect your thoughts.

The concept was simple:  each arc had a single modular bay for which we paid 7,500 tons apiece.  Now, each of these 'Omni-Bays' could hold up to 7,500 tons of equipment:  weapons, ammunition, heat sinks, and personnel quarters for the required gunners.  Total cost to the SS:  60,000 tons of cargo.

But in exchange, she could mount any of the following fore, aft, and in the side flank arcs:

9 NL-35 (6,300 tons; 468 heat; 9 gunners)
7 NL-45 (6,300 tons; 490 heat; 7 gunners)
6 NL-55 (6,600 tons; 510 heat; 6 gunners)
4 Light N-PPC (5,600 tons; 420 heat; 4 gunners)
3 Medium N-PPC (5,400 tons; 405 heat; 3 gunners)
2 Heavy N-PPC (6,000 tons; 450 heat; 2 gunners)

3 NAC-10 (150 rounds; 6,030 tons; 90 heat; 3 gunners)
2 NAC-20 (100 rounds; 5,040 tons; 120 heat; 2 gunners)
2 NAC-25 (100 rounds; 6,060 tons; 170 heat; 2 gunners)
2 NAC-30 (100 rounds; 7,080 tons; 200 heat; 2 gunners)
1 NAC-35 (50 rounds; 4,050 tons; 120 heat; 1 gunner)
1 NAC-40 (50 rounds; 4,560 tons; 135 heat; 1 gunner)
1 Light N-Gauss (50 rounds; 4,510 tons; 9 heat; 1 gunner)
1 Medium N-Gauss (50 rounds; 5,520 tons; 15 heat; 1 gunner)
1 Heavy N-Gauss (50 rounds; 7,025 tons; 18 heat; 1 gunner)

7 Barracuda (210 missiles; 6,930 tons; 70 heat; 7 gunners)
5 White Shark (150 missiles; 6,600 tons; 75 heat; 5 gunners)
4 Killer Whales (120 missiles; 6,600 tons; 80 heat; 4 gunners)
4 AR-10 (40 B; 40 WS; 40 KW; 5,800 tons; 80 heat; 4 gunners)

These were standard, but with some advance notice, you could do things like . . .

3 NL-45/3 NL-55 (6,000 tons; 465 heat; 6 gunners)

. . . or any other combination as long as it came in at 7,500 tons or less (including heat sinks and gunner accommodations).  Each Omni-bay could also only carry one type of weapon:  Naval Lasers, N-PPCs, NACs, N-Gauss, or Capital Missiles.  You couldn't mix-and-match those disparate types.
Now, changing these bays wasn't an easy task; it took the work of a shipyard (or a YardShip) and anywhere from 7-14 days to change the loadout.  And due to the "need for uniform modules", the ship still lost 7,500 tons of cargo per Omni-Bay, even if the weapons it carried amounted to far less than that amount.

It was a concept that I wish the game had taken, because it would have made the Sovietskii Soyuz into a game-changing design.  One with a load-out that could be tailored in advance for any mission, anywhere, anytime.

But if wishes were horses, eh?

It is an old idea that I had that I had (almost) forgotten about.  Anyway, I thought I would post it here and see what you guys thought.

...this reminds me of the 2830 ship, the refitted cargo ship with the NAC/10s in each cargo bay on the flanks.  Cool idea, but it would never be even considered for a canon product.

Modularizing Warships the way you could BattleMechs would be fantastic especially for the Clans but the cost I imagine would be even more prohibitive then normal warship construction. That and the facilities needed perhaps a yardship with an enormous cargo bay or transports with Omni Pods. The sort of space infrastructure you would need is just not there likely.

I did something like this with a dropship design a while back.  It could be converted from a lightly armed cargo carrier to an assault dropship.  The limitation was that there were only the 2 configurations- for example a medium laser could be swapped for a large laser but that was it, you could not put in a PPC or an LRM.

Maybe the way to handle Omni-Warships is to base it on turrets.  For example you have a turret with 4 Heavy NPPCs that can be replaced with 3 NAC/30s & ammo. I would make crew quarters and heatsinks part of the base design, if the max heat configuration needs 5000 heatsinks, they are put in when the ship is design, so that some configurations have excess heat dissipation capacity.  The same for crew quarters.

By using turrets reconfiguration should be fairly simply- you can use a Model 96 or 97 dropship to remove the turrets and replace them and a large cargo vessel to carry the replacement pods.
