Lei Kung



CGS Lei Kung and CGS Hephaestus started their lives as SLDF standard Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruisers.  Armor has been upgraded to 743 tons of ferro-carbide and unlike the standard Clan SovSoy, neither of these ships received a fifth docking collar.  Parasites consist of twenty fighters, ten small craft, and 50 Marine Elemental Infantry for security.

However, weaponry went through a rather drastic change . . . allowing these ships to become in truth what so many called the original design in the waning days of the SLDF:  a pocket battlecruiser.  Armament consists of two Killer Whale capital missile launchers (each with thirty missiles), six Barracuda capital missile launchers (180 missiles total), 8 NAC-30 Naval Autocannon (each with 100 bursts of fire), 16 Medium Naval PPCs, 24 NL-55 Naval Lasers, and one hundred and four Large Pulse Lasers mounted in twin turrets scattered across the hull.

Even the Ravens were taken somewhat aback by this design; and shocking the Ravens with more firepower is a feat that few can accomplish.  To make matters worse (from the point of view of other Clans, bandits, and Inner Sphere powers), the Scorpions insisted upon a full upgrade of the internal power distribution and cooling systems, utilizing the latest Clan technologies to allow these vessels to fire all of their weapons simultaneously.

All of these improvements consumed valuable tonnage, reducing cargo space (including spare parts) from more than 210,000 tons to just 149,515 tons.  But the end result was more than worthwhile.

Serket

CGS Serket is the Flagship of Clan Goliath Scorpion and the personal transport of the Khan of that Clan, along with the Knife Dance Keshik (a reinforced Trinary of two Stars and one OmniMech/Elemental Nova).

Outwardly, the design is almost identical to the Lei Kung-class Heavy Cruiser.  However, CGS Serket adds a fifth docking collar (as with other Clan SovSoy-derived designs) as well as a Clan Command Center massing more than 4,000 tons.  Both additions are at the expense of a fairly small amount of cargo space, although Serket is less able to serve as a transport as passenger quarters for 125 personnel quarters have been permanently assigned as cabins for the Khan's Command and Advisory Staff.

Armor, fuel, and weapons remain exactly as the Lei Kung-class ships above.

Clan Goliath Scorpion originally had four Potemkin-class Troop Cruisers, but one (CGSS Epimetheus) suffered critical damage as a result of a collision with a Hell's Horses Destroyer orbiting Tokasha.  Unable to repair the damage on their own, the Scorpions traded the damaged vessel to Clan Snow Raven for future repairs and/or overhauls of the Scorpion Fleet.

Many Warriors within the Clan consider the resources used to upgrade and maintain these vessels as a waste . . . although not nearly as isolationist as the Blood Spirits, the Scorpions seldom launch multi-Cluster attacks that would require the support of a Troop Cruiser.  Neither are these vessels ideal for supporting Seeker operations far away from the Homeworlds.  Too big, too costly, and simply too much of a pain to maintain, some voices in the Clan have advocated (for decades) selling off these vessels to the Sharks or Ravens or Bears.

But the Scorpion leadership has steadfastly resisted any such action.  Although destined not to participate in Operation Revival, the Scorpions believe that one day they will return to the Inner Sphere.  And when they do, they will need the transport capacity that these three ship have available.

The Scorpion upgrade of these ships included a slight increase in the armor protection (about 150 tons), as well as the addition of several new weapon systems.  Armament now consists of four Barracuda capital missile launchers (120 missiles total), 24 Heavy Naval PPCs, 32 NL-55 Naval Lasers, 32 Large Pulse Lasers, and 48 Medium Pulse Lasers.  The cooling and power systems have been reworked to allow the Karrtikeya-class to use all of these weapons simultaneously.

No fighters have been added to the design, although the ships can embark up to 20 small craft, along with 25 DropShips and 50 Elemental Marines.  Fuel tankage has been radically expanded, with over 72,000 tons stored aboard ship.  This would allow these ships to cruise for up to five years at 1-g of constant acceleration . . . however, the Scorpions use these vessels as fueling tankers for other WarShips, JumpShips, and DropShips, as well as filling the tanks of the various jump-point Stations in use by the Clan.  Pure cargo tonnage has been somewhat reduced to allow for this massive volume of fuel onboard, but the Karrtikeya is still able to store up to 273,550 tons (including spare parts).

Accommodations for over 600 passengers have been fitted as well, although in a pinch, these ships can easily install pre-fabricated modules allowing up to 13,400 additional passengers to be embarked (while retaining more than 170,000 tons of cargo space).  Doing so, however, would result in an extremely cramped ship's interior . . . however, modules for all three ships have been produced and are stored on Dagda.

Ground forces?  Lots of elementals, high-end (45+ plus) Mediums, lots of Heavies, fast (4/6+) Assaults, outfitted with Targeting Computers and a mixture of energy/ballistic weapons with minimal missile launchers.  Lower than average CAS ASF/OF assets than most Clans (and likely not as skilled).

Canon-wise, add heavily dependent on standard BattleMechs as well, even in front-line forces.

Ah . . . mea culpa, Ice.  I misread what you posted and I thought you were asking about Scorpion ground forces.

Okay.  Really, it is a blank slate.  In canon, they are heavily tilted towards the larger classes (two Battleships, one Battlecruiser, three Heavy Cruisers, two Frigates, four Troop Cruisers, and one 'Transport' that is heavier than 2/3rds of the Scorpion Heavy Cruisers/100% of the Frigates!).  In fact, out of the seventeen ships in canon, three are Destroyers and one is a Carrack.  All of the rest are mid- to heavy-weight ships with large crews, sizeable contingents of Elemental Marines, and buttloards of ASF/OF (220 ASF/OF in the Fleet vs. 628 in the entire remaining Scorpion Touman; assuming both formations are at full strength). 

Yet, FM:WC tells us that the Scorpions aerospace arm is ill-equipped and (possibly) not as highly trained.  Hence Khan Suvorov's reforms of the Scorpions to 'improve' the Scorpion ASF arm. 

To my way of thinking, the Scorpions should not have had such a powerful naval force.  Perhaps the numbers (and I do use similar numbers in mine above), but not the individual weight of ships.  Big, powerful capital WarShips take a LOT of resources to man and maintain . . . and the Scorps are always short on resources.  Their Fleet should either have been smaller (around 10-11 ships with 1 BB at most) or lighter in order for this third-tier Clan to make sense.

IMHO, that is.

Which is why, when I rewrote the Naval Reserve, I made it a 'cruiser-frigate-destroyer force', getting rid of the BBs and BCs and giving it a lighter force mix more appropriate (once again, in my view) to their size:  3 CA, 2 FF, 6 DD, 1 Corvette, 3 Troop Cruiser, and 1 Transport.  With 160 ASF/OF vs. that 220 of Canon (~27% fewer ASF in the Scorpion Fleet), which reflects the canon view of the Scorpion's aerospace arm as lighter and fairly primitive compared to other Clans (which made NO sense when they fielded two Battleships . . . one a McKenna and the second a modern Nightlord, plus FOUR Troop Cruisers!!  Six ships [out of seventeen] massing 1.2 million tons or greater . . .egads!!).

Yeah, it is a fairly slow naval force . . . all three Cruisers generate just 2/3 in thrust.  Everything else except four DD and one Corvette are all moving at 3/5.  And yet, that fits

If you turn those around, it makes more sense:

The Scorpions are always short on resources... because their fleet of large, expensive capital WarShips takes up a lot of their resources.

And the explanation for why they sink efforts into this expensive boondoggle? They're Scorpions. These ships are artifacts of the SLDF, living history! Of course they spend recklessly to keep them active and in mint (un-modified) condition.
