How to refit a Newgrange yardship
« on: May 29, 2012, 12:35:46 AM »

I don't really have time for this, but I'm fleshing out an idea for an unusual crossover: Btech and the novel Cien Años de Soledad. Strange, I know. But the storytelling potential is irresistable.

The very rough start: In the aftermath of Operation Chieftain and the liberation of Terra herself, Aurelio had a dream; Towards that dream he bets it all and acquires a Newgrange class warship. Broken and derelict as a result of Caspar drones, the dead hull is purchased for a song. Helped by Melquíades, from the embryonic ComStar and a colleague of Jerome Blake, Aurelio pours all of his company's resources into the project, as well as his family. In the end, it consumes him, but the family continues the grand work.

The story of the ship is the story of the family as it journeys between the stars. A community springs up, grows, develops, and experiences the universe on board Macondo.

Too silly? It seemed like a good idea last night over a few beers  :P

A few quick notes:
-The repair bay is the same weight as the original, but making it pressurized reduced th capacity to 700,000t. Still pretty impressive.
-Part of the fluff is that grav decks were salvaged from Olympus class stations, hence their size. Likewise, civilians aren't likely to have access to advanced armor types, so standard plating was used. The engine is smaller as part of the story, a proper replacement couldn't be found.

Nothing is too silly except maybe watching an Ice Hellion trying to roller blade.

Nice travelling city, bringing their repair shop into a system would likely be a welcome sight

I'd maybe give it a couple of conventional Large Lasers in each arc just for anti-asteroid defense

I know the Mechs or Small craft could technically do it but the lasers would likely give them a bit more peace of mind

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I'd describe the damage it sustained at the hands of the drones, and the time period when it was salvaged/repaired. That would certainly frame your modifications to the ship and maybe change a little? I'd also love to know how this thing survived the Succession Wars intact.

Basically, I want more. Please.

See, I asked nicely.  :D

Nothing is too silly except maybe watching an Ice Hellion trying to roller blade.

We don't need roller blades, we are Ice Hellions.

And it sounds quite interesting, mixing Battletech with more traditional Sci-Fi exploration shows/books.

The cargo capacity is a bit low for a ship of this size and function. 85.000 tons for parts, raw materials, storage and consumables for 80.000 people. Scrap marines and bay crew, other than noting the size of each, if they live permanently in space they will have the same accommodations as the rest of the crew.

Here is a modified version of your colony ship.
I added some defense weapons as well as added supplies(food and water) for the crew and passengers.
I reduced your passenger load and increased your cargo capacity.

damn, RL has a way of taking one away from Btech at a bad moment. If I had seen the replies here before...

If the cargo capacity seems low, then you read it right. It's supposed to be low, as part of the story, to reflect that the population grew into every nook and cranny over the years (and there are dropships to haul some cargo). I don't use HMPro in general; in HMAero, I never use the spare parts/food and water listings- it's already rolled into the general cargo. I agree on adding some anti-meteor lasers, though.

actually, this is mixing Btech with "magical realism;" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Hundred_Years_of_Solitude

(remove the more fantastic elements, and the Buendía family has a lot in common with the Steiner-Davions  :P )
