==Overview:==
With the ongoing need for mass produced non LF Battery equipped combat
vessels for the Outer Fleet of the 12th THSSOG(Terran Hegemony Secret Special
Operations Group) to defend the Ghost Rift stellar cluster which is now home
to the 12th and its dependents, the Chimera class Battleship is the largest
of
the Outer Fleet warships defending the cluster, coming in at 1.6 million
tons
the Chimera is more than capable of matching the current generations of
Realm's warships which are still vastly smaller and less technically
advanced.
The Chimera falls between a Texas class and Farragut class battleship in
tonnage, yet is more heavily armored and armed than either vessel, this come
at a price though the fairly limited cargo tonnage the Chimera has is far
below the tonnages normally assigned to Star League combatants, but with the
combination of uncharted deep space depots and mobile supply fleet's the
tonnage limit is not as crippling as it would have been for the Chimera's
older forebears with their extended long range deployments..
Strangely enough the Chimera is only called upon when massed Realm Fleet's
start to gather for concentrated sorties into penetrating the Ghost Rift's
defensive lines of the 12th. More often that not the swift Alicorn
Battlecruiser battle groups are the ones normally assigned to the intercept
and intervention role, but when heavy and brutal fire power is needed to be
brought to bear upon larger enemy formations the Chimera and here sister ships
are called up from the forward deployment sites and form up into a rare line
of battle which they are supremely well suited for.
With it's heavy firepower and armor and internal structure that is capable
of surviving nuclear strikes and combined with is massive allotment of
aerospace fighters and assault dropship's acting in tandems with the Chimeras
main weapons, each Battleship acts as Flagship for it's individual Outer
Fleet
sector assignment. The Chimera's are usually escorted by two heavy cruisers of
the Black Tiger class(stretch hull variant of the Black Lion that was refitted
with a energy weapons array to compliment the class's Naval Auto Cannon’s.),
one Swift Fast Escort Carrier and six of the Ferret class destroyers.
Considering the vastly different duties of the Alicorn class and Chimera
class, it is a rare occurrence to see them serving together with the exception
of Invasion intercept duties.
==Capabilities:==
The 1.6 million ton Chimera is the heavyweight of the Outer Fleet of the Beast
Clan's Ghost Rift territory’s, as such it was decided that the ship would pack
the greatest amount of weapons and armor possible available to the Beast
Clan's resources.
Built around a Class 132 Internal Structure, the hull of the Chimera is very
robust allowing for a impressive 4200 tons of Lamellor Ferro-carbide armor
to be mounted and give the design the ability to withstand Nuclear weapon
strikes with a chance of survival.
As for speed the design is fairly standard with a 1.5g cruise speed and a
flank rating of 2.5g provided by the three Roll's Royce Phantom class
interplanetary drives which account for over 288,000 tons of the ships weight.
To provide a large cruising range a 16,000 fuel bunker was provided which
give the design 168 max burn day rating and 420 1g burn day rating.
One of the most interesting choices made concerning the Chimera was decision
to incorporate a over large Aerospace fighter compliment, this was mostly made
due to the past history of the 12ths/Beast Clans, Commander and Founder
Admiral Travis who was a major proponent of including heavy fighter and
dropship compliment to the 12th's designs and later Beast Clan designs. With
108 fighters on board the Chimera has enough fighters to rival or exceed
earlier carrier designs of both the Star League and Houses, supplemented with
24 small craft for various multi role duties, the aerospace compliment is well
supported. This in turn is supported by the ships compliment of 160 Armored
Combat Marines for either boarding duties or extreme risk rescue missions.
For other duties the Chimera supports 10 docking hard points for dropships,
this is usually a mix of escort and secondary cargo haulers, but for more
combat orientated missions, Assault ships and CV's are assigned.
The main weapons of the Chimera consist of the ships thirty two Naval Auto
Cannons of the type 30 class, these provide the main medium to long range
hitting power of the ship, in turn these are supported by the ship over large
array of eighty Naval Laser's of the type 55 class, to help provide extreme
range firepower versus both ships and fighters thirty two Killer Whale missile
launchers was incorporated into the weapons mix, also this provides the design
with nuclear weapons option.
Secondary weapons support is provided by a dual battery of sixty four
Extended Range Particle Projection Cannons and sixty four Gauss Rifles, this
provides for both hard hitting firepower against both fighters and dropships,
to help protect the design against normal and nuclear missile attack of both
conventional missiles and Capital Missiles, Thirty two Anti Missile Systems
with overly large ammo bins was included.
==Variants:==
There is unconfirmed rumors floating thru the fleet of a LF equipped version
of the chimera, but in order for the needed LF Battery to be refitted into the
design, there is expected major change to the Primary Chimera Hull itself in
order to accomadate the change or even possible increase of tonnage, making
for a possible Block II designation.
==Deployment==
Currently the Chimera is deployed with the three Quadrant Main outer fleet's
which in turn support the 6 Sector Outer fleet's,(ie two sector fleets to
every quadrant fleet.
At this time there is a total of 12 Chimeras deployed with the Quadrant
Fleets; four per Quadrant, each Chimera operates in a BCG(Battleship Carrier
Group) consisting of a Chimeria Battleship, one Black Tiger Battle
Carrier(Alpha Version) , two Black Tiger heavy cruisers(Primary Version) and
six Ferret Class Destroyers.
