Design Contest: Combined Arms Mercenary Transports
« on: August 21, 2014, 03:30:54 PM »

So I have this personal Mercenary Unit, the Lioness Combat Team.  over the years it has grown into a self sustained combined arms force rating six battalions in strength.

Total Roster
48 Battlemechs
24 Tracked Combat Vehicles (all over 50 tons)
12 Hovertanks (all under 50 tons)
12 Helicopers
18 Light Tracked Fire Support Tanks (Hunters)
1 Teppo Mobile HQ
1 Battery of Thumper Angel Vehicles (6 tubes)
40 Battle Armor Squads (16 Fenrir, 8 Raiden, 8 Marauder, 8 Ravager)
12 Mechanized Infantry Platoons
8 Mechanized Combat Engineering Infantry Platoons
1 Supply and Distribution company
1 Repair and maintenance company
1 Medical Infantry Company
1 Force Protection Company
Ammo, Coolant, and Spare Parts haulers and trucks
18 Aerospace Fighters
6 Heavy Escort Spacecraft
1 Invader Class Jumpship

So here is what I need.  I need 3 Dropships that can split this force relativly evenly among them.  I need two Bulk Transports two which the mechs will be divided evenly between them (as the core of the offensive force.  and one "Command Ship" Which will house the Teppo, Artillery, Support Personell would predominate.  all three vessels must be based on identical hulls and maintain identical speeds, but the command vessel may be outfitted differently from the transports.

The Winner will recieve my eternal graditude, a complimentery Valiant Comic that Catalyst Game Labs gave out at Genconand other assorted good and plenties TBD later.

I used a redesigned Overlord for mixed arm units not sure how u want it totally mixed so I kinda keep most of ur heavy combat equipment in theses two dropship well a third one would hold the left over mechs and tanks so the HQ forces wouldn't be totally undefended during landing.

Overview:
In the early 3060s the AFFC began looking to replace it’s older dropship fleet with new designs that would be capable of surviving on the modern battlefield. In the early 3060s the AFFC began working with Federated-Boeing on the development of several new ship designs. The first ship completed was the Conquistador command ship.  The AFFC was very pleased with the Conquistador and commissioned Federated-Boeing to develop a replacement for the venerable Overlord.   The AFFC issued very limited requirements for the new design, it needed to be able to survive on the modern battlefield, carry a mech battalion with an independent command lance and have enough cargo space to provide the battalion with support until the rest of the RCT’s supply train could catch up with the combat troops.  The first prototype was completed in early 3065 and production started in early 3066.

Capabilities:
The Chieftain is designed to replace the old Overlord class mech transport.   When the AFFC approached Federated-Boeing about developing a new mech battalion transport they provided Federated-Boeing with only 3 requirements for the design.  The new ship needed to be able to carry a complete mech battalion with an independent command lance, be able to survive on the modern battlefield and capable of carrying enough supplies to support the battalion in combat for 3 days.  All the other design features were left to up to the development team.

The initial design studies looked at using the Overlord as the basis for the new design. However they quickly realized that they would need a much larger ship if they were going to meet all the design goals.   As a result the Chieftain is almost twice the size of the Overlord.

The engineers took advantage of the Chieftain’s large size and developed a very strong structural frame for the ship. This allowed them to mount 108 tons of the latest Ferro Aluminum armor, providing the ship with approximately double the protection of the Overlord. In addition to the improved armor, the engineers improved the firepower of the Chieftain compared to that of the Overlord.  The weapons were chosen to provide protection against enemy fighters at all ranges.  Additional defense is provided by the 6 fighters that are carried on board the ship.

The major feature of the Chieftain is it’s large mech bay. This bay is capable of carrying up to 40 battlemechs.  When designing the ship, the engineers met with Battlemech techs assigned to the Davion Heavy Guards as well as several flight crews which were assigned to Overlord dropships.  The techs provided the engineers with their requirements for mech maintenance.  As a result the Chieftain has a number of large cranes for mech repair and the mech cubes are designed to allow the techs to preform major repairs while still on board the ship.  In addition the cargo bays are placed near the mech bay. This provides the techs with easy access to replacement parts.  The cargo bays are large enough to carry enough replacement parts, ammo and other supplies to keep the battalion supplied for 2 or 3 days of fighting, what should be enough time for the establishment of a beachhead on the planet and the arrival of the rest of the units supply train.  The Overlord crews helped the designers layout the ship so that it would speed the off loading of mechs in combat.  The result is that that the Chieftain can off load it’s mech complement in 10% faster then an Overlord, despite the fact that the Chieftain has 4 extra mechs.

When designing the ship, the engineers, after consulting with the command staff of the Davion Heavy Guards, decided to add the ability to carry a company of Battle Armor and a company of Heavy Vehicles on board the ship. The Battle Armors are intended to provide support for the mech regiment or security for the dropship, depending on the requirements of the situation. The vehicle bays, however, are not intended to carry combat vehicles. While tanks can be carried if need be, the designers intended that the space to be used for support vehicles- trucks, MASH units, Mobile HQs, etc, which can be used to provide logistical support to the unit.  The vehicle bay is very spacious, while it is only rated for 12 heavy vehicles, there is enough room to carry up to 24 light vehicles.

One of the other interesting features of the Chieftain is the crew quarters. The ship provides very spacious cabins for the crew, each crew member has a small private room and shares a bath with one other crew man.  What is very unusual is that the designers provided quarters for all the troops carried on board the ship. The idea was that if the troops had better quarters they would be better rested when they entered combat. The mechwarriors, senior techs,  pilots and the officers from the vehicle and Infantry companies all have double occupancy staterooms. The rest of the troops and techs share 4 person bunk rooms. While the facilities are still relatively spartan, they are a great improvement over previous generation ships. As a result troops are very happy to be assigned to one of the Chieftains.

Deployment:
The first Chieftains were deployed by the Davion Heavy Guards in the assault on New Avalon.  Following behind the spearhead of Conquistadors, the Chieftain’s were able break through the Naval Blockade and quickly deploy the Heavy Guards to their LZ on Rostock. The speed which with the ships were able to off load the mechs provided the Guards with enough time to stop the 3rd Robinson Rangers before they could over run the Allied LZ.   The Chieftains then landed and provided logistical support for the Heavy Guards, supporting them until the rest of Duke Sandovals supply train could land 2 days later.

With the end of the Civil War, the AFFS has requested that Federated-Boeing speed up production of the new dropships, as they are needed to replace the losses suffered during the war.

Questions:

1. Do your Mechanized Infantry platoons have vehicles assigned, If so, how many? are they all light vehicles

2. Re: Battle armor squads are they moving on Mechs or dedicated vehicles? If vehicles, are they already listed in your TO&E or is the vehicle a part of the squad?

3. How many vehicles do you have to move around all of the support unit (Medical, Supply, repair et al)?

they are small support vehicles like most proper mechanized platoons, not the heavy armored transports.

the Fenrirs are self mobile thanks to the 5MP, the Riadens and Kanazuchis are vehicle mobile (Teppo and the custom Helicopters)

most of the other vehicles are non combat vehicles to be moved around as bulk cargo, you figure a few bulldozers, construction mechs, ambulances, bulk haulers etc all over.
