OUTRAGE CLASS ASSAULTSHIP
Overview:
One would hardly expect Aerospace innovation to emerge from the disintegrating Outworld Alliance yet in a desperate effort to prevent the total collapse of their fragmenting state the OWA have developed a curious little assault ship based on the Fury class transport. The name “Outrage†is a pun on its ancestor, the Fury class and the Outworlds themselves.
The new assault ship is centered on an interesting low tech Rocket Launcher system that seems to have evolved under the pressure declining trade and technology which have hit the periphery especially hard. This simple compact and cheap weapon has potential for many uses where mass and cost are critical and endurance is of secondary importance, such as gunboats.
The shortage of the ability to manufacture nukes and the political sensitivity regarding such weapons has forced the Outworlders down a slightly different road than the rest of human space. While obviously not the shipkiller of a true nuclear armed gunboat the Outrage can still output an impressive amount of damage for a ship of its size during an attack run.
Capabilities:
The main punch of the Outrage comes from the massive single shot wing mounted missile batteries able to fling 200 missiles each into space in a single volley. The drawback is that this system lacks the complex reloading systems of regular missile systems. While this greatly reduces the complexity and expense of the weapon it also reduces it to a single shot weapon. The missile arrays are backed up by a battery of domestically manufactured Large Lasers and smaller point defense laser clusters.
The thin armor, and for the OWA at least high cost of an assault ship, makes the onboard fighters the preferred first strike weapon of the Outrage. Particularly as the OWA Aerospace fighter arm is renowned for its skill and élan making the deployment of the Outrage as a carrier a preferable option for the suffering Outworlders.
Variants:
There are no known variants of the Outrage class but the simplicity and low cost as well as the relatively low value of the donor Fury class ships the basic Outrage design is likely to spread.
Deployment:
The Outworlds Alliance is estimated to have converted about half a dozen of these ships as carrier support to their small gunboat force or as system defense ships in vital systems. Although the deployment of the Outrages have not halted the implosion of the Outworlds Alliance their presence, along with the few Leopard gunboats in the Alliance fleet over vital worlds have a significant deterrent effect on the increasing number of pirates infesting the region.
