Brandenburg Class Heavy Cruiser Block II Enhanced Stretch Hull
« on: January 09, 2011, 12:21:25 AM »

more a less a might have been design and concept, just trying to make something that would possibly fit into Shattered Dawn, I entered all my fluff in the variant section of the write up. If I ended up stepping on any ones toes over the design and the fluff, apologies ahead of time.

==Overview:==
During the opening stages of the Age of War the need for
a new Lyran Heavy Cruiser became apparent. While the Lyre
class Heavy Cruiser did perform well enough, the design itself
was becoming outdated. In addition, the Commonwealth’s
Tirpitz class Battleship required escort vessels to protect them
from increasing enemy attacks. So in 2420 the Lyran High
Command authorized construction of a new Heavy Cruiser
specifically to escort the Tirpitz. What Lyran naval designers
came up with became known as the Brandenburg class Heavy
Cruiser in honor of Archon Katherine Steiner’s famous edict
that reformed the Lyran military

==Capabilities:==
Commonwealth engineers built the Brandenburg on
a simple principle, reliability. Every component used on the
new Heavy Cruiser was time tested and proven on at least
two other Lyran warships. Twenty four Naval Autocannon/25s
aligned along the warship’s broadsides were the Brandenburg’s
main weapons. Supporting these formidable cannons were
thirty two Medium Naval Particle Projection Cannons and
sixty four Naval Laser-45s. These capital energy weapons
could be brought to bear for naval engagements or orbital
bombardments. Added to that were thirty two White Shark
Missile Launchers which served as the vessels fighter defense
and dropship screen. Augmenting the Brandenburg’s firepower
were twenty seven aerospace fighters (half an aero-regiment)
and three dropships carried on board. This was the largest
aero fighter complement carried by a Lyran Heavy Cruiser.
The two Brandenburg escorts together with the Tirpitz could
deploy two full regiments of fighters more than enough to
protect the three warship group. The vessel mounted over
one thousand four hundred tons of heavy armor plating for
good protection. Ten platoons of marines provide ship security
and with the warship’s six small craft can engage in boarding
actions. Designers added five grav decks for the crew comfort
but instead fed the vessels main problem “Social Admirals”.
Many regular Lyran sailors dubbed the Brandenburg a luxury
liner after listening to these social climbers whine about
conditions on board. Rounding out the vessel was over fifty
one thousand tons of cargo space, ample for any long term
operation. The Brandenburg proved to be such a reliable
design that only one major upgrade was ever performed on
the vessels. This refit began in 2653 following the Star League
Arms Control Edict. With the scrapping of the Asgard class
Battleship, it was imperative that the Lyran Navy upgrade their
Tirpitz class Battleship and her escorts. Engineers only saw
fit to replace the Brandenburg’s armor with advanced Ferro-
Carbide improving the Heavy Cruisers survivability. While this
was a major undertaking much of the original Brandenburg
survived for nearly four hundred years.

==Variants:==
The Block II Enhanced Stretch Hull type of the Brandenburg was built as a
protoyype to correct speed defiencies that was common to all Lyran heavy
warships, but instead of cutting back on wepaons and the already limited hull
cargo spaces, the Lyran Design teams went with the typicail Lyran response to
the problem. Make the ship larger!!, the new hull ended being 150,000 tons
larger than the older hull, but it did allow for the designers to shoe horn in
a new engine that enhaced the speed from the previous version to be comparable
with othe realms cruiser types.

Other changes to the new hull was the reduction of the Naval Lasers from 64
Type45 to 48 of the more powerfull Type 55 model, also reduced was the number
of White Shark Missile launchers from 32 to 18 this was done in order to
provided need bay space was a series of conventionail ER PPC's aqquired from
secondary sources ie a Star League Depot that was on the Lyran side of the
border and cleaned out before the SLDF could before the Exedos as also a
battery of Anti Missile Systems. The addition of these two systems showed in
simulators a higher engagement ability and survivability factor versus massed
missile attacks and fighters that was missing in the older Brandenburg.

Yet the real gems to the enhanced hull was the least visible, the addition of
Double Heat Sinks to provided enhanced heat disipation for less weight, even
though the cost per enhanced heatsink was higher, the weight savings that was
used in other factors of the design justfied the expenditure. The last item,
yet maybe the most important was the replacement of the Ferro Carbide armor
with the albiet more costly but better protection of Lamellor Ferro-carbide
which in the end provided a overall increase of nearly 32 percent to all
points of the hull's armor belt.

Yet in the end all this effort and pain staking work was in vain as Yed
Posterior - New Earth Trading Corporation Port Royal Naval Shipyards and the
prototype itself was destroyed by a Draconis Combine Raiding Fleet.

There was plans in the works for enhanced refits to be done to the Guantlets
that would have been designated as a Block III type and also a Block II
version of the Thor Class Battleship that would have made a rival in size and
speed for even the Terran Republics Sovereign class Battleship.

==Deployment==
Forty of these vessels were constructed throughout the
Lyran Commonwealth and have gone on to serve their nation
well. The Brandenburg class Heavy Cruiser is almost always
grouped with the primary Lyran command ship, the Tirpitz. Two
Heavy Cruisers, usually named in their honor, would escort the
Commonwealth flagship forming a Naval Command Squadron.
Assignment to a Brandenburg was a prestigious posting within
the Lyran Navy. Captains of Brandenburg’s were typically
rising stars in the fleet and most likely were next in line for
high naval commands. This unfortunately led to one of the
warships biggest liabilities, her crew. Many “Social Admirals”
were posted aboard hoping to play naval hero. This led to
a poor crew performance on board many of these warships.
In fact, in many war games (like the Skye Fleet Maneuvers
held during the first years of the Star League) smaller vessels
from the Star League, Capellan, and Lyran Navies regularly
outperformed the Heavy Cruiser in individual performances.
However, the designs simplicity and reliability generally made
up for the crews shortcomings. While some of these Heavy
Cruisers were lost to colossal blunders most survived wars and
countless maneuvers only to be scrapped for newer ship. As
a result only twenty eight Brandenburg class warships were in
service when the Succession War began. Brutal combat and
their proximity to the Tirpitz cut their numbers to just five as
of 2800.

Thanks, I dont know why but the Brandenburg is one of my favorite ships in Shattered Dawn, for some reason it reminds me of a German High Sea's Fleet Dreadnought from WW I. The Guantlet is a nice upgrade of the Brandenburg, but that is like when the Germans upgrade from their 11in cannons to 12 in cannons. I might go ahead and still do the 2 other upgrades I some what hinted at but to be honest I havent even designed that far.

What I like about your upgrade is its believability. It is a little big and I might call it a battlecruiser not a heavy cruiser. I designed the Brandenberg along with the Tirpitz so it was one of the older duos.

Well thanks, and your right due to its new size it could fit the BC  classification easy, one of the other reasons of tinkering the upgrade was to enhance the escort capabilities of the Brandenburg to keep pace with the faster Tirpitz, by doing so at least to my thinking the two designs would compliment each other more and be more effective in the intercept role for when the enemy comes a calling to allow for faster deployment versus the slower speeds that are the norm, I just finished tinkering with the Gauntlet Refit I was thinking of doing, but I decided that it was not as practical as the Brandenburg, to be able to shoe horn in the improvements and actual keep the same weapons load proved to be a bit to incompatible, the design ending topping out at 1.12 Million Tons, heck it ended up becoming a Battleship on its own. will still post it just minus fluff other than stating it was part of the projected refits that was going to occur.

Well here is the Guantlet Stretch hull mentioned in the Brandenburg refit.

this version of the refit turned out harder and more weight intensive to do, as I could not really see much options of reducing weapons like I did for the Brandenburg and replacing them with slightly heavier weapons to free up space, so I decided just go with the stock weapons and apply the secondary weapons/ams battery's style that was applied to the Brandenburg along with LFA armor for enhanced protection, this design never made it past the computer simulation stage as the shipyard designated for the refits was destroyed  by the Draconis Combine.
