==Overview:==
With the reduction of their major warships in the First Succession War to a
single crippled battlecruiser, the Lyran navy was faced with doubts if they
could withstand the slightly less damaged DCN and FWLN. They managed to secure
enough of the reconstruction budget to commission a new class of warships from
Ioto Galactic Enterprises.
The first Panzerschiffe was commissoned in 2839 and production continued until
2853 when the loss of the last serving vessel over Hesperus II and subsequent
annihilation of the DCN's remaining warships by LCS Invincible ended the
warship threat and increasing losses to transport fleets made simpler and
cheaper jumpships a higher priority for the yards.
==Capabilities:==
Modelled on a Merchant-class jumpship's hull the Panzershciffes have engines
just powerful enough to maintain acceleration of 9.8 m/s2 for sustained
periods, with sprint capacity of 14.7 m/s2 in emergencies. This is something
the commanders learned to use sparingly after the constructive loss of LCS
Gneisenau which had several structural members snapped, disabling the K-F
core, after overstressing the hull with a sustained high-speed run to avoid a
FWLN corvette in 2845.
Capital armament was limited to four naval lasers, one forward and three aft.
Designers had concluded that the Panzerschiffe was most likely to engage
targets at long ranges while slowing to engage or while seeking to avoid
engagement - both scenarios would involve the engines and thus the stern
towards the enemy.
Primary armament for sustained engagements were eight large batteries of LRM
launchers. The LCN concluded that this was sufficient to credibly threaten the
armour of light warships and it would be cheaper to provide hundreds of tons
of LRMs to the ship than capital missiles or other advanced weapons.
For anti-fighter defense, Panzerschiffes were equipped with eight triple
turrets mounting large lasers, which proved reasonably effective. Passive
protection was provided by a heavy belt of conventional plating, heavier than
most corvettes. The weight of this is believed to lie behind the difficulties
caused by high speed runs.
The Panzerschiffes could each carry two squadrons of aerospace fighters
although the bays were large enough to accomodate shuttles if needed - in
practise this was largely unneeded but the oversized flight crew quarters were
appreciated by the operating crew.
==Deployment==
Nine Panzerschiffes were built by the LCN over 14 years and all were destroyed
over the same time period, over the early years of the Second Succession War.
The ships saw action against both the FWLN and DCN, as well as two engagements
against pirate raids and one 'police action' into the former Rim Worlds
Republic region.
