AuroraHistory tells the Inner Sphere that the SLS
Gettysburg destroyed the last known
Dart-class Light Cruiser over New Vandenberg in 2762. Yet, just four years later, another
Dart (RWS
Conquistador) led the assault on Mars during the Amaris Coup. Proof that not all recorded history is accurate.
When the SLDF launched their attacks against the Rim Worlds Republic in order to secure a base of operations for the eventual Liberation of the Hegemony and then Terra, three more
Darts were discovered being feverishly worked on in the shipyards orbiting Apollo. Although none of the three ships were operational at that time, General DeChavalier ordered that work on restoring the vessels to service be continued (albeit, not at such a blistering pace as Amaris had demanded).
Still, the vessels were old and it took almost eight years to restore all three of them to service. Re-commissioned back into the SLDF, these vessels were assigned to the 11th Royal BattleMech Division as escorts during the Liberation of Terra. All three survived (in part because of their obsolete nature and old age they were ignored by the Caspers in favor of more modern vessels). And all three would eventually depart on the Exodus.
During the Golden Century, Clan Goliath Scorpion was the in process of expanding their Naval strength when the current Khan of that Clan (Christina Elam) spotted these ships on the register of the Clan Naval Caches. Although restoring such ancient to service would cost more in resources than more modern designs, Elam was adamant in her insistence upon returning these ships (these . . .
Living Legends) to service.
It took Clan Snow Raven engineers and technicians almost twenty years to restore two of the three ships . . . the third was stripped for parts and components after it was discovered that her keel was broken in four locations. But once
Aurora and
Eclipse (as Khan Elam renamed the ships) were complete, it was evident that the Ravens had worked miracles.
In many respects, the ships were almost entirely new, with contemporary alloy frames replacing those fatigued by age and ill-care. Modern computers and fiber-optic wiring replaced the older electronics, if measured by the replacement of parts, the Kearny-Fuchida drive was almost entirely newly constructed . . . and no
Dart had ever been outfitted with LF Batteries or HPGs. But these were. Their thrust remained low (1-g safe and 1.5-g's maximum), but their newly installed ferro-carbide armor plating (nearly twelve
hundred tons worth!) was thick and able to resist even the most powerful of weapons. Rugged and reliable, the new
Aurora-class were handed over to the Scorpions for testing and evaluations.
Naval officers assigned to
Aurora were impressed by the armor, but even more so by the deep fuel tanks and the standardization of weapon systems. Rather than the hodge-podge array of Naval Autocannon of the original design, the refit relied upon sixteen NAC-25 Naval Autocannons in eight two-gun batteries for their main punch (fed by deep magazines containing over 1600 bursts of fire). These weapons were supported by 8 Medium Naval PPCs, 8 NL-55 Naval Lasers, 2 Killer Whale capital missile launchers (with 60 missiles total), two White Shark capital missile launchers (also with 60 missiles total), and 2 Barracuda capital missile launchers (once again, with 60 missiles in total). Thirty-two Large Pulse Lasers and
ninety Medium Pulse Lasers provided for a blanket of anti-fighter defensive fire so thick that even Cloud Cobra pilots looked askance at assaulting one of these Light Cruisers.
To make matters worse (for the Pilot's point of view), the Ravens thoroughly overhauled the power and cooling systems, allowing for the
Aurora-class to fire every single weapon mounted simultaneously.
Luckily, even though the Cruiser retained the six (
six!!) docking collars of the original
Dart, the Ravens were unable to outfit the design with a proper fighter bay. Although it is technicially possible to operate fighters from the Small Craft bay (which can store up to ten small vessels), there are no provisions for repairing or rearming fighter craft . . . and the bay is vulnerable to damage. The new Cruiser did have ample internal space, however, to allow for a full Binary of Elemental armored Marine Infantry to be stationed onboard.
Cargo space (including spare parts) was rated at an ample 108,651 tons.
