Clan Goliath Scorpion Naval Reserve
« on: January 22, 2015, 06:20:34 PM »

Hello, everyone.  Well, I am back again and taking a new look at the ships and naval organization of Clan Goliath Scorpion.  I think (although I could be mistaken) that I have managed to craft a very unique and 'Scorpion-esque' force for you folks to take a look at and comment/critique.  Don't hold back; I'm not a person who easily gets my feelings hurt, so blast away if you see something you do not care for (or think I really got wrong).

A few notes before I start.  First of all, in canon the Scorpion had a very strong naval force consisting of two Battleships (a McKenna and a Nightlord, a Battlecruiser (a Cameron, three Cruisers (a Sovetskii Soyuz and two Aegis), two Frigates (both Congress class), three Destroyers (a pair of Lola IIIs and an Essex, two transports (a Volga and a Carrack, and four (yes, you heard that right, FOUR) Potemkin Troop Cruisers.

Seventeen WarShips, ladies and gentlemen.  For a Clan that was repeatedly cited as being lacking in resources and barely managed to maintain their measely 24 Clusters!  (As well as lacking in aerospace resources . . . what?)

Compare this to the other Clans:

Blood Spirit had four WarShips (none heavier than a battle cruiser).

The aerospace-heavy Cloud Cobras had fifteen WarShips (one of which was a Battleship).

The Coyotes had twelve WarShips (including two Battleships).

The Diamond Sharks (the mercantile Clan) had eighteen WarShips (one a Battleship).

The Fire Mandrills just seven.

The Ghost Bears (prior to their introduction of the Leviathan class) had twelve, including a single BattleShip.

Hell's Horses had ten, with three Troop Cruisers and a BattleCruiser as their strongest.

The Ice Hellion's thirteen (including a single BattleShip).

The Jade Falcons fielded twenty-three WarShips (with two Battleships!!).

The Nova Cats had twenty-four, but nothing heavier than a Battle Cruiser.

Of course, the naval-heavy Snow Ravens had the most . . . forty WarShips, including three Battleships!

After the Burrock Absorption, the Star Adders could boast of twenty-eight WarShips, with two Battleships among them.  They couldn't man all of those ships, but they had them.

The Steel Vipers had just fifteen with a single Battleship.  Until, the Clan Watch utterly failed its job and they built (and no one noticed!!) the most powerful Battleship in existence.  Oops.

And finally, Clan Wolf had at least nineteen including one Battleship.

We don't have hard numbers on Burrock or Smoke Jaguar, so I've left them out.

Only six Clans (Diamond Shark, Jade Falcon, Nova Cat, Snow Raven, Star Adder, and Wolf) had more active duty WarShips than the resource-poor and struggling Scorpions!!  And of the Clans, only Coyote, Jade Falcon, Snow Raven, and Star Adder (post-absorption) could match the Scorpions in the number of Battleships that they fielded; of those just the Ravens exceeded their number.

Now, going by the real-world (always a tricky proposition in BT, I know; I know it well), Battleships (and to a lesser extent Battlecruisers) were only built (in force) by the strongest naval powers; others might have one or two or three, but these were purely prestige units meant to show 'WE ARE STRONG' even as the Royal Navy laughed at them.

BUT WAIT, MA!  The Scorpions, all of the Clans, don't have to build these ships . . . they are SLDF vessels (pretty much).  Doesn't that mean the Scorpions could support such a large Fleet?

Maybe.  But as the Adders are finding out in the late 3050s, it is a lot easier to order your Warriors and other Castes to 'provide crews for these ships' than it is to actually DO IT.  And therein lies the other problem . . . maintaining them.

The Scorpions already have this problem in canon with one of their Potemkins (Epimetheus which was damaged in a collison with a Hell's Horses vessel above Tokasha; the Scorpions could not repair it, so they 'gifted' it to the Snow Ravens . . . hell of a gift).

Having large and powerful vessels does absolutely no good if you can't man them, drill them, and (above all) maintain them in fighting trim.

The second problem that I have with the way the Scorpion Fleet is structured is who their founders are.  Cyrus Elam was an SLDF Combat Engineer.  Jenna Scott was an intelligence officer (according to Sarna.net) who served with the Infantry.  Both were out-of-the-box thinkers and far more concerned with the pragmatic day-in and day-out running (and training) of their new Clan than all-but-impossible to afford and crew displays of 'prestige'.

So, what should the Scorpion Fleet look like?  That, my friends, is what we are about to explore.

NOTE:  This is a different vessel than my pervious DS named the same.  In pretty much every way, this one is simply a Pentagon IIC . . . the old SLDF DropShip built with Clan technology to be faster, stronger, tougher, and able to put more damage down-range.

Death Dancer

The Death Dancer is the standard Clan Goliath Scorpion assault DropShip (perhaps even the Clan-wide standard . . . if you want it to be).  Based on the old SLDF Pentagon-class, the military spheroid Death Dancer loses a bit of cargo and fuel tonnage (really, why do you need 360+ days of fuel on a DropShip?  600 tons?) in order to boost SI, armor, and speed (thrust is now 8/12), as well as converting all weapons to their Clan equivalents.  (Sort of . . . I made a few changes here, a tweak there, as appropriate.)

Massing 4,000 tons, the Death Dancer is able to accelerate at the same rate as an Achilles even while clad in 67.0 tons of ferro-aluminum armor plating (for an armor distribution of 430 nose, 430 right, 430 left, and 394 aft).  Crew consists of three officers, two crew, and twelve gunners . . . manning 10 LRM-20s with Artemis IV (600 total missile salvoes), 6 Gauss Rifles (360 individual shots), 10 ER PPCs, 22 Large Pulse Lasers, and 24 Medium Pulse Lasers.  In addition to these crew, the DropShip carries ten Elemental Marines for boarding actions against hostile WarShips, JumpShips, DropShips, Small Craft, or Stations, along with space for three passengers.

The design has enough fuel (332 tons) to boost at max accel for more than 400 turns . . . and that should be plenty.  Including spare parts, the Death Dancer can carry 510 tons of cargo AND has enough DHS to fire every single weapon every single turn in every single arc of fire.

Like the Pentagon of old, this ship serves not only as an assault-craft, but also as a defensive escort protecting the WarShip it is assigned to from hostile ASF and OmniFighters.

Interesting things so far!  Are the warship designs, available clan wide, or a custom design for Clan GS?

Nemesis

CGSS Nemesis began life as the SLS Brubaker, a Vincent Mk. 39-class Corvette.  Heavily modified for service as an escort vessel for the Fire Wheel Battlegroup, this nimble little vessel (the smallest capital WarShip in the Scorpion Touman) now bears little resemblance to her original design schematics (although she retains the dimensions and form of her Mk. 39 ancestors, rather than the blocky 'modern' Mk. 42 design normally used by the Clans).

Mass remained at 420,000 tons and the ship is capable of accelerating at the same 3-g's maximum thrust as all other Vincents.  But the resemblance ends there.  Raven engineers and technicians (working off of the plans of Scorpion Scientists) increased fuel tankage to 14,425 tons and upgraded the armor to ferro-carbide (334 tons worth).  Two docking collars were added, along with Lithium-fusion batteries and an HPG installation.

The original armament was completely removed and replaced with 2 White Shark capital missile launchers (60 missiles total), 6 Barracuda capital missile launchers (180 missiles total), 8 NL-45 naval lasers, 8 NAC-10 naval autocannons (with 800 bursts of fire), 32 Large Pulse Lasers, and 48 Medium Pulse Lasers.  The power distribution and cooling systems were reworked to allow CGSS Nemesis to fire every weapon simultaneously without any difficulties.

Parasite complement consists of 10 fighters and 5 small craft, while 25 Marine Elementals provide an onboard security force and are used for boarding operations.  Cargo (including spare parts) remains an ample 51,868 tons.

Interesting things so far!  Are the warship designs, available clan wide, or a custom design for Clan GS?

Feel free to use them if you want, SW.  They are primarily CGS-exclusive . . . but the Ravens always retain design schematics and can build according to what you demand, after all.  Some (like the Death Dancer and Nemesis shown above) can quite easily be converted from existing hulls (Pentagons and Vincents aren't exactly rare in Clan space, after all).  Others . . . ???

Well, some of the designs use some odd-ball (and ancient) hulls where only a bare handful (or even just TWO) came along on the Exodus.  But even then, if the Ravens can new build Yorks after running out of Riga II hulls, they could probably do it with these.

It is all up to you.

Persephone

Clan Goliath Scorpion's Persephone-class Destroyers are nothing more than modifications of existing SLDF Essex-class hulls.  CGSS Persephone began life as the SLS Princeton, while Orpheus was originally the SLS Furious

Both ships remained at 620,000 tons displacement with a thrust profile of 1.5-g's safe acceleration and 2.5-g's maximum acceleration.  The armor plating was replaced with newly manufactured ferro-carbide plating (501 tons worth) and fuel tankage was expanded to allow for the ships to cruise at 1-g for up to a standard year before depleting their supply.  The pair retained the standard complement of 10 fighters and 10 small craft of modern Clan Essex-class ships, but were fitted with two docking collars for DropShips as well.  25 Marine Elementals are permanently assigned to each of these vessels, and Raven engineers fitted the ships with LFBs and HPGs to allow for rapid-response and interstellar communications.

Armament was consolidated, with six NAC-30 naval autocannon (each with 100 bursts of fire) replacing the original designs battery of NAC-20s, although the new vessel's firepower remained approximately the same.  The mass saved was used to upgrade the old battery of Naval Lasers and Naval PPCs to hard-hitting, longer ranged NL-55s (12 total) and Medium N-PPCs (8 fitted).  Four Barracuda capital missile launchers were retained (each with 30 missiles) and an array of Large Pulse (32) and Medium Pulse (48) Lasers fitted to deal with hostile ASF and small craft.

The power and cooling systems were completely reworked, allowing for the Persephones to utilize all of their onboard weaponry without experiencing rapid internal heating and power drains.  Cargo space (including spare parts) remained an ample 103,841 tons.

Sagitta

CGSS Sagitta and CGSS Auriga started their long and industrious careers as the SLS Scott and SLS Callaghan, respectively.  Both ships fought throughout the Amaris Coup and the Liberation of Terra before joining the Exodus and were among the ships which originally located and explored the Kerensky Cluster.  Assigned to Clan Goliath Scorpion, they served until 2920 when both vessels were in dire need of refits and overhauls.  Over the next decade, the Snow Raven shipyard at Lum serviced the two ships, repairing and rebuilding them to the specifications provided by the Scorpion leadership.

Massing 680,000 tons, the vessels are among the swiftest and most maneuverable WarShips of the Scorpion Touman (safe thrust of 2-g's, max thrust of 3-g's).  Fuel tankage was expanded at the cost of some cargo space; although many observers took issue with this, citing the ability to carry additional fuel within the cargo bay stored within collapsible bladders, the Scorpions prefer to have this highly volatile and explosive substance secured within dedicated bunkers.

Armor was increased to 551 tons of ferro-carbide composite and two docking collars were added to the design.  As with most Clan WarShips, the original fighter and small craft bays were converted to the new Clan standard:  10 fighters and 10 small craft are able to be carried aboard, along with 25 Marine Elementals.

The armament was streamlined, with fewer (but harder-hitting) naval autocannon replacing the multiple banks of lighter guns once carried; in a similar fashion, heavier and more powerful naval lasers were fitted.  The new arrangement consists of 18 NL-55 Naval Lasers, 8 NAC-20 Naval Autocannons (each with 100 bursts of fire), 1 Killer Whale capital missile launcher (with 30 missiles), two White Shark capital missile launchers (each with 30 missiles), and five Barracuda capital missile launchers (with 150 missiles total).  In addition, the Scorpions demanded the installation of 32 Large Pulse Lasers and 48 Medium Pulse Lasers as an anti-fighter/kamikaze measure.

The power supply and cooling regulators were reworked as well, allowing the Sagitta and her sister to utilize her full armament without concern over power shortages or excess over-heat production.

Cargo space (including spare parts storage) remained an ample 90,975 tons.

An interesting topic masterarminas.

I would say that this Clan has wanderlust more so than others which would account at least in small part for their large Navy. The Seekers running all over the place do in practice need transport but this is a stretch to say why the Clan needs so many warship. It does kind of make them explorers however...

If you break down their Warships you will find that 6 are Transports and only one, the Nightlord, is a new build. God knows how they acquired that Battleship presumably from the Snow Ravens in exchange for what? The other 10 are old Star League hand me downs. Did they could prioritize the acquisition of Warships? Either from early Brian Caches or perhaps it has to do with the Widowmakers but I doubt that.

Also I would ask how do the Scorpions feel towards non trueborns? Unlike Traditionalists (Coyote, Jade Falcon, Steel Viper, Smoke Jaguar) they seem to respect freebirths both as warriors and "lower" castes. Their reaction towards Moreau, training the Wolf Dragoons, and their melding with the Eridani Light Horse are just some examples I would cite. Auxiliary or ancillary warriors such as warship crews may have a special place of honor.

Or another theory perhaps the ships themselves are valued artifacts of a bye gone age. Not quite museum pieces but revered living legends in their own way still sailing the ocean blackness as they did with the Star League and Kerensky. Historic societies would have nothing on the Scorpions right? In this case I would argue against significant modification due to the sacred value placed on them.

Just a few ideas. ;)

BTW, I was thinking of creating a Command Soyuz like the Dire Wolf as described by Focht. Didn't I see you do something like that??

Legacy

Two Riga-class Frigates made the long journey on the Exodus.  Former SLDF vessels (SLS Bremerton and SLS Durban), these frigates had been mothballed almost a century before the Amaris Coup took place.  Hastily restored to service by Rim World forces, the pair fought against the SLDF during the battles that liberated the Hegemony, with the Bremerton captured in dock above Asta by SLDF special forces and the badly damaged Durban surrendering to an SLDF Task Force in the outer system of Talitha.

Despite their use by the Usurper, both ships were too valuable to the SLDF in the post-Liberation years to discard.  When the Exodus was launched, these vessels left the Inner Sphere with General Kerensky.  However, upon reaching the Pentagon, both were placed in mothballs once again.

Decades later, following Operation Klondike and the establishment of the Clans, Khan Cyrus Elam petitioned the ilKhan to restore these two vessels to service in place of the two Congress-class ships his Clan was originally assigned.  When Nicholas Kerensky asked why, Elam responded that the old Rigas were simply better vessels . . . and that they deserved a chance to redeem their names by giving honorable service in Kerensky's Clans . . . much like two former Rim World officers, brothers, who now led one of Nicholas' twenty Clans.

Amused by the comparison, Nicholas granted his request.  And the Legacy-class Frigates were born.

Over the years, these ships have seen many upgrades, overhauls, and refits.  While they still mass 750,000 tons (70,000 tons more than the Aurora-class Light Cruisers also used by the Scorpions!), they retain the original transit drives which offer an acceleration of 1.5-g's safe thrust and 2.5-g's maximum thrust.  Fuel tankage has been greatly expanded and the original armor scheme replaced with 1,044 tons of ferro-carbide.

The two docking collars were retained, while the flight decks were reworked to accommodate 20 fighters and 10 small craft.  An extensive overhaul in the mid 2900s widened and increased the height of many internal corridors and compartments, allowing the Marine complement of 50 Elementals to operate throughout the ship with only a handful of locations too cramped for their battle armor.

The armament has also been altered to ease the strain on Scorpion logistics.  A single caliber of Naval Autocannons has been installed, supported by Naval Lasers and Naval PPCs, and augmented at closer ranges by a serious belt of standard-scale Pulse Lasers for anti-fighter work.  Fourteen NAC-25 Naval Autocannons are this WarShip's main fist (each fed by 100 bursts of ammunition) with long-range capabilities provided by 8 Heavy Naval PPCs and 16 NL-55 Naval Lasers.  In close, there are fifty Large Pulse Lasers spread across the hull in tandem turrets, along with seventy-two Medium Pulse Lasers in triple turrets.

Heat sinks and power amplifiers have been provided in quantity to ensure that the Legacy and her sister ship can maintain a constant stream of fire on her opponents.

Cargo space (including spare parts) weighs in at 99,212 tons.  Although slightly lower than the Warrior caste wanted or expected, it was deemed 'enough' in light of the heavy armor protection and massive firepower that this ship is capable of generating.

BTW, I was thinking of creating a Command Soyuz like the Dire Wolf as described by Focht. Didn't I see you do something like that??

Some good ideas . . . I really like the Living Legends idea.  Which already works with the fluff for the Legacy-class (see above) that I had written before I saw your reply.

The command ship is coming and I did do something similar . . . this one is slightly different, though.

Aurora

History tells the Inner Sphere that the SLS Gettysburg destroyed the last known Dart-class Light Cruiser over New Vandenberg in 2762.  Yet, just four years later, another Dart (RWS Conquistador) led the assault on Mars during the Amaris Coup.  Proof that not all recorded history is accurate.

When the SLDF launched their attacks against the Rim Worlds Republic in order to secure a base of operations for the eventual Liberation of the Hegemony and then Terra, three more Darts were discovered being feverishly worked on in the shipyards orbiting Apollo.  Although none of the three ships were operational at that time, General DeChavalier ordered that work on restoring the vessels to service be continued (albeit, not at such a blistering pace as Amaris had demanded).

Still, the vessels were old and it took almost eight years to restore all three of them to service.  Re-commissioned back into the SLDF, these vessels were assigned to the 11th Royal BattleMech Division as escorts during the Liberation of Terra.  All three survived (in part because of their obsolete nature and old age they were ignored by the Caspers in favor of more modern vessels).  And all three would eventually depart on the Exodus.

During the Golden Century, Clan Goliath Scorpion was the in process of expanding their Naval strength when the current Khan of that Clan (Christina Elam) spotted these ships on the register of the Clan Naval Caches.  Although restoring such ancient to service would cost more in resources than more modern designs, Elam was adamant in her insistence upon returning these ships (these . . . Living Legends) to service.

It took Clan Snow Raven engineers and technicians almost twenty years to restore two of the three ships . . . the third was stripped for parts and components after it was discovered that her keel was broken in four locations.  But once Aurora and Eclipse (as Khan Elam renamed the ships) were complete, it was evident that the Ravens had worked miracles.

In many respects, the ships were almost entirely new, with contemporary alloy frames replacing those fatigued by age and ill-care.  Modern computers and fiber-optic wiring replaced the older electronics, if measured by the replacement of parts, the Kearny-Fuchida drive was almost entirely newly constructed . . . and no Dart had ever been outfitted with LF Batteries or HPGs.  But these were.  Their thrust remained low (1-g safe and 1.5-g's maximum), but their newly installed ferro-carbide armor plating (nearly twelve hundred tons worth!) was thick and able to resist even the most powerful of weapons.  Rugged and reliable, the new Aurora-class were handed over to the Scorpions for testing and evaluations.

Naval officers assigned to Aurora were impressed by the armor, but even more so by the deep fuel tanks and the standardization of weapon systems.  Rather than the hodge-podge array of Naval Autocannon of the original design, the refit relied upon sixteen NAC-25 Naval Autocannons in eight two-gun batteries for their main punch (fed by deep magazines containing over 1600 bursts of fire).  These weapons were supported by 8 Medium Naval PPCs, 8 NL-55 Naval Lasers, 2 Killer Whale capital missile launchers (with 60 missiles total), two White Shark capital missile launchers (also with 60 missiles total), and 2 Barracuda capital missile launchers (once again, with 60 missiles in total).  Thirty-two Large Pulse Lasers and ninety Medium Pulse Lasers provided for a blanket of anti-fighter defensive fire so thick that even Cloud Cobra pilots looked askance at assaulting one of these Light Cruisers.

To make matters worse (for the Pilot's point of view), the Ravens thoroughly overhauled the power and cooling systems, allowing for the Aurora-class to fire every single weapon mounted simultaneously.

Luckily, even though the Cruiser retained the six (six!!) docking collars of the original Dart, the Ravens were unable to outfit the design with a proper fighter bay.  Although it is technicially possible to operate fighters from the Small Craft bay (which can store up to ten small vessels), there are no provisions for repairing or rearming fighter craft . . . and the bay is vulnerable to damage.  The new Cruiser did have ample internal space, however, to allow for a full Binary of Elemental armored Marine Infantry to be stationed onboard.

Cargo space (including spare parts) was rated at an ample 108,651 tons.

Re: Clan Goliath Scorpion Naval Reserve
« Reply #12 on: January 22, 2015, 10:10:46 PM »

The rest will be up either later tonight or tomorrow.

But for right now, let's talk about my revisions.  Sure, we only lost one ship (sixteen vs. seventeen).  BUT, we also dropped our total tonnage by 4.66 million tons (or about 26.53% of our total canon weight).  Smaller ships (even smaller ships that are expensive to build) are quite a bit easier to maintain than larger ones.  Not to mention easier to crew and operate.

Yes, we lost firepower.  But even for the Clans firepower isn't the sum total of the game.  This force mix (to me) highlights the Scorpion strengths (and their ideology, what with restoring OLD ships to serve again) as a pure 'Cruiser-navy'.  Second-rate against the larger Clans, but then . . . so what?  They are second (or even third-rate) in canon anyway!

But . . . but . . . you just pulled those ships out of your [BLEEP]!

Yeah, so what?  We know (from canon) that at least one Riga exists in Clan caches, along with at least two Sovetskii Soyuzs.  Vincents are a dime-a-dozen.  All we really need to find are one more Essex, one more Riga, and two Darts . . . that is it.  I'm pretty sure there is at least one Essex in mothballs somewhere in Clan space . . . and if the Clans can have a Davion II and a Samarkand lying up in ordinary, why can't they have another Riga and some Darts?

Anyway, the rest will be up tonight (or tomorrow).  Besides, think about the bright side.  There is now a McKenna, a Nightlord, a Potemkin, a Cameron, two Aegis, two Congress, and a Carrack floating around out there in the caches that weren't there before!

EDIT:  And one thing I really wanted to do was to examine how ships don't develop in a vacuum.  Look at all of my designs . . . they are built to complement each other.  From using many of the same weapons to having extensive anti-fighter defenses in the form of those massed pulse laser turrets!  Fighters making an attack run on a Scorpion Naval Star should be sweating bullets from the defense in depth of these ships (and their Death Dancer-class escorts!).

Well this is something I am currently considering for the Clarion Call universe but it is beyond the scope of the Quicksilver Program. A Naval Program for the Clans is on the back burner as the InnerSphere can not hope to match what the Clans field now (3052) anyway.

I have gone over the Exodus numbers with Irose before and given the ships that left with Kerensky there should be a lot more in mothballs available to the Clans. Our original estimates based on numbers built, known survivors, and best geusses led me to believe there are plenty of McKenna (18 Exodus) and Sovetskii Soyuz (40 or more Exodus). The numbers on the rest of the warships are close but those two classes McKenna (7 remaining) and Soyuz (15 remaining) are way low meaning they should be out there in numbers.

Then there are these notes from Wars of Reaving

Code: [Select]
Babylon Naval Cache (Small / +1 other damaged) - Essex Destroyer (SLS Marseilles) – CDS Architeuthis
New Kent Naval Cache – Aegis class Heavy Cruiser – SVS Silver Snake
Vinton Naval Cache (+2 others damaged) – Samarkand class Carrier – CDS Deal Breaker
MSKC-2 - Samarkand class Carrier – CSA Yorktown
MSKC-2 - Kimagure Pursuit Cruiser – Admrial Russell Nga (Burrock)
MSKC-2 – Riga class Frigate – Hetherington (Burrock)
MSKC-2 – Baron class Destroyer – unknown name (Bandit Caste)
Damascus – Sovetskii Soyuz – Cloud Cobras
Budapest – Sovetskii Soyuz – Cloud Cobras
Stone Crab – Mako class Corvette - Burrock
Ingrid Bucharev – Mako class Corvette – Bandit Caste (reborn Burrock)
Fuchida – Mako class Corvette – Bandit Caste

Depot MSKC-2 is a planetless system between the Pentagon and the Kerensky were Star Adder stored the last few of its mothballed warships. Eight warships in all stored here with four scuttled. Page – 112-113 – Constriction – Wars of Reaving

Plus the Clans didn't consider warships a priority but they did develop more then just the Nightlord (8, slipped from the Snow Raven shipyards at Lum in 2932) prior to the Leviathan (3055 joint Bear-Raven effort, 2 or 3 total). There is the more numerous Fredasa (16+ built) which debuted in 2962 and appears in several Clan Toumans the stats are in TRO3057. Also we have a few unknown classes referred to in Strategic Operations under First Warships. Clan Wolf apparently fielded the Molniya in 2951, Clan Jade Falcon launched the Peregrine in 2969, and Clan Snow Raven deployed the Corone in 2915. You could argue that the Clan Carrack which is based on a Star League design was a joint warship built by the Diamond Sharks and Nova Cats in 2950 but lets not. So that is six Clan designed Warships that we know of. Could be more. Not likely though but maybe 1 or 2 at most.

I have also been considering the fate of the Newgrange Yardships with the Clans.

Ultimately my take on this would be a Clan wide effort to modernize their warship fleet.

Andromeda

CGSS Andromeda is really nothing more than a refitted and rearmed Volga-class Transport.  Scorpion scientists indicated to the Ravens that they wanted to improve the armor by replacing the IFA of the original with the same mass of ferro-carbide . . . something few other Clan refits have done.  Generally speaking, most Clan refits of WarShips have retained the same level of armor protection, using more advanced materials simply to save tonnage.

However, the Ravens have a saying:  the customer is always right.  Along the way, they also overhauled the designs weaponry, removing all of the core armament and replacing it with 4 Medium Naval Gauss (100 shots apiece), 8 NAC-20 Naval Autocannon (100 bursts apiece), 28 NL-55 Naval Lasers, 32 Large Pulse Lasers, and 48 Medium Pulse Lasers.  The Ravens noted that installing the third and fourth N-Gauss would require the removal of the aft flight deck, to which the Scorpion Khans agreed.  The design did retain all four of the docking collars, as well as the forward fighter bay and the small craft landing decks.  However, the Marine Elemental complement was cut in half, from a full Binary of 50 Elemental Marines to just a Star of 25.

Furthermore, cargo capacity dropped from over 200,000 tons to 160,843 tons (including spare parts).  However, the design was now tougher and far more dangerous in combat, a tradeoff which the Scorpions were willing to make.
