==Overview:==
The Daedlus was one of House Davions first WarShips. Debuting in the 2422,
this destroyer was lighter than the Terran Hegemony Baron class and lacked any
capital missile launchers--compensating in some part by having a few
additional naval autocannon. Both ships featured a comparable acceleration,
although the Daedlus carried heavier armor than the first generation Baron
class.
These destroyers served House Davion well for nearly eighteen decades--but the
Reunification War tore through this class with a vengeance. Scores were lost
in combat during the first few years of the war alone. Replaced by the
mid-2580s by the larger, more powerful Davion-class Destroyers, the surviving
Daedlus-class were relegated to rear area security and providing escort on
supply convoys.
Unfortunately, the commerce raiding that the Concordat undertook in the later
half of the war did not spare the Daedlus class--even more ships were lost in
the final half of the war than in the first. By the time the Reunificiation
War ended, House Davion had already decided to scrap all remaining
Daedlus-class in favor of constructing the new and improved Davion II-class.
==Capabilities:==
The Daedlus was a 430,000 ton light destroyer with a safe thrust of
1-g--maximum overthrust of 1.5-g's. Although the design featured a decent
amount of armor (429 tons of standard armor composite), the low SI ensured
that any signfiicant damage was likely to result in a lost ship.
Life most destroyers of the period, the Daedlus lacked any docking collars
(indeed, contrary to public opinion, when the Daedlus was first designed,
modern DropShips did not exist--nor did docking collars) and carried just six
aerospace fighters and two small craft. They were fairly well armed with a
total of twelve NAC-10 Naval Autocannon and thirty-two NL-35 Naval Lasers.
The nose and stern each mounted a six-gun bay of NL-35, while the two
broadside arcs carried ten-gun bays. Two-thirds of the NACs were posistioned
in the fore-quarters (two four-gun bays), while the remainder were mounted in
the stern-quarters (two two-gun bays). No secondary anti-fighter weapons were
originally mounted. However, due to the prevelance of Taurian aerospace
assets during the War, all surviving Daedlus were eventually equipped with
conventional anti-fighter weapons, although the exact configuration varied
from ship to ship, based upon what the shipyard had available at the time.
Unlike the larger and more capable Knight-class Cruisers, the Daedlus-class
was never a high priority for refit during the war, especially since the
Davion-class destroyer was already in production.
