DCS Mikasa and DCS Kongo
« on: August 20, 2011, 08:13:13 PM »

Since I am picking where I left off in the K&K universe, I thought I would repost two of my favorite Draconis Ships:  the Mikasa-class battleship and the Kongo-class battlecruiser.  Once upon a time, they were here, but they have since gone away (is the new bird!  Here to stay is the blue bird!)

 :o

Enjoy!

==Overview:==
At the dawn of the Age of War, House Kurita stood poised to absorb its
neighbors.   Standing in their way, however, was the Terran Hegemony.   By the
first half of the 24th Century, the Terran Hegemony had several dozen
Dreadnought and Monsoon class Battleships in commission--the Draconis Combine
had none.   Unwilling to let the Hegemony outclass it with such a visible
display of power, the Coordinator directed the Draconis Combine Admiralty
(DCA) to build him a fleet which would awe the Terrans into their place.

But problems with the design of the K/F Drive Core--never an easy
task--plagued the project from the very beginning.   At first, determined to
match the size of the Monsoon, the DCA tried to plan for a ship equal in mass.
They could not produce a stable core, however.   Eventually, the ISF
(Internal Security Force) gained the complete schematics and plans for the
Drive Core of Hegemony Dreadnought class Battleship.   Though lighter by over
three hundred thousand tons than the Monsoon, the DCA was forced to copy the
Dreadnought core exactly.   Although Kurita engineers eventually discovered
how to build larger cores, they seemed to prefer the greater maneuverability
of the smaller one million ton hull when compared to other battleships..

From 2351, when DCS Mikasa was commissioned in great ceremony at New Samarkand
to the dark days of the 2nd Succession War, the Mikasa class would serve the
Coordinator and the Combine with glory and honor.   Eventually, twenty-four
ships of this class would be built, but the goal of awing the Terrans into
submission was never accomplished.   Despite the excellent new ships the
Combine was building, its economy simply could not sustain a prolonged naval
arms race with the rich and populous worlds of the Terran Hegemony.

Perhaps because of this, the Combine often refused to scrap or retire its
older ships.   Instead, these vessels were often refitted and overhauled and
restored to pristine conditions.  Such was the case with the Mikasa class
which served with distinction for more than three centuries.

==Capabilities:==
The million-ton Mikasa class proved to be one of the most maneuverable
WarShips of its day, capable of generating a maximum thrust of 2.5-g's.   This
gave the new Combine ships an edge over the then standard Dreadnoughts and
Monsoons of the Hegemony, although that advantage was to quickly disappear
with the introduction of the Farragut, Texas, and McKenna over the new few
centuries.   Immense fuel bunkers gave the new ship excellent legs, while
50,000 tons of spare parts and a year's worth of life support, food, and water
for the 900 crew, marines, and passengers allowed the Mikasa class the ability
to conduct long operations with minimal need for resupply.   An additional
53,600 tons of open cargo volume was small when compared to contemporary
Hegemony ships, but more than ample for the DCA, which was used to making do
with less.

Six docking collars allowed the Mikasa class to transport a wide variety of
support vessels-from 'Mech or fighter carriers, to troop transports, to
assault ships, to a variety of cargo vessels and personnel transports.
Thirty-six aerospace fighters and four small craft were also carried, in two
hangers, giving the Mikasa a solid strike force and combat air patrol.   Able
to launch her entire fighter complement in less than four minutes, these
fighters (typically two squadrons of Sabres or Sholagars, two of Shilones, and
two of Slayers) were more than able to provide the Mikasa class with a
'bubble' of protection from enemy aerospace assets.

Nearly 1,600 tons of Improved Ferro-Aluminum armor provided more than ample
protection for the ship from hostile fire.   This heavy armor gave the Mikasa
class a reputation for a rugged ability to sustain damage that would savage
many lesser ships.

The main firepower of the Mikasa class was concentrated along her flanks.
Each of the fore-quarters, broadsides, and aft-quarters firing arcs mounted an
identical arrangement of weapons.   A two-gun battery of NAC-20 Naval
Autocannon with 50 shots each formed the single heaviest guns, but these were
not the main batteries of the ship.   That role was given to the two four-gun
batteries of Medium Naval PPCs that formed the heart and soul of the ship.
With a maximum effective range of 900 kilometers, and only slightly less
damaging than the heavy NACs, the quad Naval PPC batteries were perhaps the
single most telling feature of the Mikasa and her sister ships.   An
anti-fighter battery of two LRM-20 launchers (40 shots each), two PPCs, and
two SRM-6 launchers (30 shots each) provided a punishing threat to fighters
that dared to come too close.

The forward and aft batteries each mantained the NAC-20 battery and the three
anti-fighter batteries.  In addition, the forward arc carried a single
five-gun Medium N-PPC battery.

DCS Mikasa served as the Flagship of the entire Combine Fleet for her entire
career, from her commissioning in 2531 to her demise in 2853--three hundred
and twenty-two years later.  This mighty vessel of the Combine was the last
serving battleship in the DCA as well as the first, and in her final battle,
she and her escorts destroyed the only three Golden Lion class dreadnoughts
that had thus far survived the Succession Wars.

==Variants:==
When the Mikasa first entered the Fleet, she was outfitted with 1,594 tons of
standard armor plating.   Beginning in 2590, she and her sister ships were
refitted with Improved Ferro-Aluminum, the overhauls being completed by 2620.

==Deployment==
Tactically, the Mikasa class Battleships would deploy in Battle Divisions of
two Mikasas and a pair of escorts, typically destroyers.   One of the Mikasa
class ships would be equipped as a flagship, serving as the lead vessel of the
Division.   Four such Divisions would form a Battle Squadron in the DCA.
Unlike most of the Great Houses, but similar to the Hegemony and later SLDF,
House Kurita only seldom deployed its battleships as individuals or even as
divisions.   They were much more likely to deploy a full squadron--or at the
very least a half-squadron--to deal with any situations that may arise.

By the latter half of the 25th Century, the DCA had twenty-four Mikasa class
ships and three complete Battle Squadrons under its command.   During the
Reunification Wars, these ships were never seriously challenged by either the
Rim Worlds Republic or the Outworlds Alliance.   Many senior DCA officers
cursed the luck that gave the hardest fought battles to the Star League and
Davion forces instead of them.   Had the Coordinator permitted it, the DCA and
DCMS would have leaped at the chance to fight the Taurians.   Despite the lack
of any major battles, the DCA learned its lessons from the Wars of the 26th
Century though the use of observers in the Taurian Campaign.   They relearned
just how vital logistics were against even a small enemy and just how powerful
a fanatical defense could be.

Those lessons were absorbed by the DCA and came full circle when the
Succession Wars erupted into full fury after the Exodus of the SLDF.   Because
of those lessons, the DCA and DCMS drove into the heart of the Federated Suns
and very nearly destroyed one of their most bitter foes.   Only the incident
at Kentares IV prevented the House of Kurita from taking its rightful place as
the leader of the Inner Sphere.

==Overview:==
The twenty-four Kongo-class Battle Cruisers were designed during the
Reunification War in response to Taurian nuclear attacks on SLDF vessels.  DCA
observers noted that no ships in the entire Draconis Fleet were capable of
firing the nuclear-tipped Killer Whale capital missile.  These observers made
the suggestion that the DCA should develop a new class of capital ship which
carried these weapon systems.

However, many in the naval establishment resisted this pressure from serving
officers.  Capital missiles were weapons that the naval hierarchy just
disliked.  At least, the establishment resisted this idea until 2596 when the
Coordinator, having received full reports on the actual casualties the SLDF
Navy had suffered during the twenty year war, ordered the DCA to quickly begin
construction on at least two dozen new, Killer Whale armed vessels.

In hindsight, it must be realized that Coordinator Leonard Kurita was
anticipating the post-Reunification War naval freeze that would shortly occur.
In fact, the Naval Arms Limitation Treaty of 2622 brought the construction of
all capital WarShips (outside of the SLDF) in the Inner Sphere and Periphery
to a grinding halt.  But, by that time, the Combine already had twenty-four
complete (or mostly complete) Kongo-class Battle Cruisers in service.

In a slight of hand, the final six ships were launched just before the treaty
was signed--DCS Ena being just 74% complete.  However, she was able to leave
dock under her own sub-light transit drives and she was able to jump, so the
DCA classified her as 'completed' just in time for the Treaty to be signed.
It would be two years, however, before Ena and two of her sister ships were
actually combat-ready and capable.

==Capabilities:==
In order to save as much time as possible in the designing, blue-printing, and
construction of the Kongo-class, the DCA decided to modifiy the old
Mikasa-class battleships.  Believing that the use of capital missiles required
a faster, more maneuverable ship (and since the new Farraguts had erased the
acceleration advantage of the Kurita fleet), the Kongos mounted four engines
instead of the three on the Mikasas, giving these ships the highest
acceleration of any known capital WarShip.

However, the weight of the fourth engine required that fuel, provisions, and
life-support endurance be cut by 25% from the Mikasa class.  Furthermore, the
internal bracing was also reduced (but this by only 12.5%), allowing for just
under 1,400 tons of Improved Ferro-Aluminum armor plating.  The design
retained six docking collars and launch bays for thirty-six fighters and four
small craft, plus accomodations for a total of 900 personnel, including 252
Marines.

Armament was reduced in scale as well.  Each flank carried the same armament
in all three arcs:  a Killer Whale missile launcher (30 shots), four Medium
Naval PPCs, two NAC-20 autocannon (50 shots each), two LRM-20 launchers (40
shots each), two PPCs, and two SRM-6 launchers (30 shots each).  The bow and
stern removed the Naval Autocannon, but retained all other weapon systems.

The design took less than three months to finalize and DCS Kongo entered serve
on 28 December 2600.  Classified by the DCA by a battle cruiser, the SLDF (and
other major powers) considered her a fast battleship, mainly due to her
tonnage and heavy armor protection.  Twenty-four were eventually built and
entered service with the Dragon.

==Variants:==
The DCA made no major modifications to the Kongo-class over their two
centuries of service.

==Deployment==
As with the Mikasa-class battleships, the Kongo-class battle cruisers were
deployed in divisions of two Kongos plus escorts, with four divisions forming
a Battle Cruiser Squadron.  When the Naval Arms Limitation Treaty went into
effect, House Kurita could field three Battle Squadrons and three Battle
Cruiser Squadrons.  The Kongos were often deployed in independent
divisions--far more often than the Mikasa, which seldom saw serve in anything
less than demi-Squadron strength (4 BBs).

During the 1st and 2nd Succession Wars, these fast BCs were infamous for their
abilty to evade defenders and launch nuclear missiles at vital factories and
shipyards far into the rear of the the front-lines.  They quickly became
priority targets for the other Houses, and by 2621, the last Kongo-class
battle cruiser (DCS Hei) had been destroyed.

I like this pair exactly how a Battleship and Battlecruiser should be.  Maybe slower Battleship to really put guns on it but the BC is a really great comparrison plenty firepower, speed and support but armour takes a hit very nice, doesn't happen often enough IMO.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.
