Kurgan Heavy OmniFighter

To sooth ruffled feathers with Clan Snow Raven following the reintroduction of the Woodsman OmniMech in their Coyote rivals Tourman as a gift from Clan Wolf, the Raven’s ‘retaliated’ by making sure that for several months, no slips were available for overhauling Clan Wolf WarShips at the Lum naval yard.  The slips were either busy or undergoing extended maintenance or so the excuse went.  And with relations between the two Clans dropping, the ilKhan stepped in to sooth bruised ego’s and bash out a deal.

The Wolves would give the Raven’s the production schematics for the Jagati OmniFighter and the Ravens would in turn make sure that the Wolves ships got their refits on time and at a reduced cost at least for the first few ships.

Although the Raven’s had the Jagati in their Tourman they were only obtained through trade or as prizes won from Trials, and they could not produce their own version of the fighter.  But now, with the plans in their hands they could.

And in truth, they didn’t like what they saw.  The Jagati was over-gunned, under protected and shorter legged than the much more popular Visigoth, which was the mainstay of the Raven’s front line-fighter arm.  But its hitting power couldn’t be ignored so they had made use of it, albeit in somewhat limited numbers.  Now, they felt they could turn the Jagati into a far more deadly craft.

First, the fuel tank was enlarged to a full 5-tons which considerably increased the fighters endurance.  Armour was also increased up to 13 tons of Ferro-Aluminium layering the fighters hull.  The weapons choices were also heavily reworked but were designed with the Jagati’s ground attack and strike role in mind.  With the structural and armour changes being sufficient enough to have the fighter be a different type it was designated the Kurgan after a feared swordsman of Terran myth.

Variants

Prime – Removing the LRM-20, the rear firing large pulse laser and one ER PPC freed up a considerable amount of tonnage.  The wing mounted large pulse lasers were joined by a pair of ER Medium lasers, whilst a single ER PPC was mounted in the nose along with a pair of medium pulse lasers.  Two medium pulse lasers were installed to cover the fighters stern whilst twenty double strength heatsinks were installed, allowing for a wider weapons choice when engaging targets.  Utterly lethal in strafing runs and still able to maul hostile fighters the reworked Prime was a far more capable fighter than its progenitor.

– Designed primarily for ground attack roles the A featured a heavy bore LB pattern autocannon in the nose, fed by a generous 4-tons of ammunition, allowing the pilot to have the right ammunition available when needed.  The main energy punch came from an ER PPC mounted in each wing whilst an ER small laser barely covered the fighters aft.  At shorter ranges a trio of SRM-6’s each with their own ammunition bin could be brought to bare and could easily cripple vehicles or hostile aircraft in a swarm of missiles.  Capable of holding up to 12-tons of ordinance under its wings (at the cost of being a fairly easy target and largely unmanouverable outside of slow turns) an attack run by a Kurgan A can flatten a Mech or group of vehicles before they can react.

B – Designed as a missile support unit the Kurgan B features a trio of Artemis enhanced LRM-20’s, each with a large 3-ton ammunition bin, a lesson learned from Operation REVIVAL and the Battle of Tukkayid.  Capable of unleashing barrages of 60 missiles with pinpoint accuracy the B can cripple hostile fighters and maul ground forces.  For self-defence a quartet of Medium pulse lasers are spread around the fighter, one in each wing, one in the nose and one in the tail, giving it a modicum of firepower should the LRM’s run dry.

D – Simple but brutally effective the D is designed to win aerospace superiority and destroy hostile fighters as well as support the Raven’s smaller Mech units with strafing runs.  Armed with a quartet of large pulse lasers, two in the nose, one in each wing, the D hits hard and hits often thanks to the bulky targeting computer fitted to the fighter.  A pair of ER Small lasers cover the fighters rear but these are at best a deterrent and not much more, although against lighter Inner Sphere fighters they can be quite dangerous.

A thought that struck me whilst in the bath and will help me with my Woodsman when I get round to it tomorrow, this is a re-worked Jagati, a fighter that always struck me as a bit of a dogs egg.  The Prime is basically a flying Puma/Adder Prime, its got all those big lovely guns, but it sure as hell can't use them without a terrifying overheat, reducing many weapons to just dead weight, and the huge rear gun was pointless.  The Kurgan's a bit more rational and can use its weapons without doing a very good Gama ray burst impression, but most of them still run hot.

What do ya think?

Operation Restoration and the Quicksilver Trials have probably pissed off a lot of Clans particularly the Invaders but not so the Home Clans in general. I don't believe the Ravens would be so aggrieved with the ilKhan or his Wolves yet. As I just postulated about the Woodsman the scavenger themed Ravens who have long been Wardens are likely users of this elder design.

Fact of the matter despite the massive clash between the Coyotes and Snow Ravens there is little animous. I believe it says so in FM Warden Clans under Snow Raven's Regarding Other Clans but I have to look that up to verify the exact wording. Pretty certain of this though. Another piece of evidence on this is the Coyote's new York (the Broken Sea) currently under construction at Lum by the Ravens. If the dirty birds hated them doggies no warship work for them. I even theorized with Bradshaw that this naval construction program came about as a result of those pre-Revival Trial battles.

It is funny to note that the Ravens did pick up the Avar from the Wolves which could result in something similar in theme to this very design. However, you'll have to wait till Quicksilver Upgrades reaches the Avar to cash in on that. ;)

Oh and before I forget I may issue a couple of Aerospace Fighter (not an Omni) design challenges to round out a design or two which I planned but have not yet completed. More research is necessary however before I can do that. Stay tuned!

Found the relevant quote in Field Manual Warden Clans (page 121, first sentence top of the page)

Quote
A series of bitter clashes with Clan Coyote before the invasion bidding cost us so dearly that we failed to qualify for the combat trials, and thus missed out on an active or reserve slot in Operation Revival. We bear no grudge against the Coyotes for this; the Coyote Trials occurred at an inopportune moment, but our Touman performed well.

Here is a link to the Broken Sea (York class Destroyer/Carrier);

The way I'm seeing it, its not a vendetta or anything its just petty politiking.  The Ravens may or may not hold a grudge over being unable to take part in REVIVAL due to their fraccas with the 'yotes, and something like that could be a useful political tool.  And in this case the Raven's see the Wolves letting the 'yotes get production rights to the Woodsman to rebuild their Tourman.  So in this case its a case of "So sorry, we are fully booked until 3066."

But fluff aside, any thoughts on the fighter itself?

Actually thats a good point, where are the rules for strafing, i've never actually looked up how fighters and Mech's interact in game.

Its the single most effective means for a fighter to attack BattleMechs hands down. I stand by my tactics.

Total Warfare pg 243

Strafi ng
Quote
Units flying within three altitudes of the ground on a low altitude map (or within three altitudes of the ground if the unit is flying directly on a ground playing area; see Aerospace Units on Ground Mapsheets, p. 91) can make strafing attacks against ground targets. Lacking the precision of a striking attack, a strafing attack sprays a large area with weapons fire, making it less likely to hit a specific target but potentially damaging numerous targets.

A unit making this type of attack chooses from one to five consecutive hexes along the attack path. These hexes must lie in a straight line. The unit may fi re one, some or all of its directfire energy and pulse weapons when strafing. The player must roll for every target, hostile or friendly, in all of the chosen hexes. See Modified To-Hit Number, at left, to determine the target number for a strafing attack.

The attacking player makes separate to-hit rolls for each weapon against each target. Apply weapon hits using the standard rules for the appropriate unit type. Use the column of the appropriate Hit Location Table that corresponds to the attack direction, based on the direction from which the fighter entered the target’s hex, rather than the fighter’s position at the end of the Movement Phase.

Most strafing attacks must take into account only the terrain in the target’s hex. However, units flying at Altitude 1 (NOE) find it harder to establish a clear line of sight and so must also take into account the terrain in the hex adjacent to the target and along the flight path in the direction that the attacking unit entered the target’s hex. If the hex in front of the target is two or more levels higher than the level of the target unit, the target is in a dead zone and cannot be attacked.

In the old rules it also stated an energy weapon needed to at least fire 4 hexes or greater so Small Lasers didn't count towards it.

If you'd build one for strafing it might look like this. I wonder what Clan honor states about strafing. It doesn't seem honorable as it targets multiple opponents. (If they do not allow this its another stupidity of their honor)

In regards to the design its nice changes to the design as the lack of fuel and low armor for Clan fighters makes no sense. Especially as they have so much weaponry that they can't take full advantage of.

Side note its odd that Aerospace fighters need to worry about heat in space. Mech's get advantages for being in Water shouldn't fighters and others get advantages in the coldness of space?

Thank you :) One thing with the Kurgan is a dire need for a nose cone because whilst its fine in space, in an atmosphere the big blunt nose of the jagati is about as aerodynamic as a barn door.

Something about the Jagati's design makes me think that it was part influenced by the BAE Lightning.  The Jagati's engines appear to be stacked atop one another, like the lightnings, and this is a thing, it reduces drag and makes less drag than side by side engines.  This in turn gives the fighter a rather 'tall' profile as you can see here.

Instead of the usual broad shape of a normal fighter and this is what the Jagati makes me think of, and explains (at least in my mind) why its tall rather than broad.  And with somewhat limited internal space from this layout, it might explain why the armour's thin and the fuel tanks are light.

Possibly! I thought of the Mig-21 too but in my mind its too narrow, the Lightning is a taller craft because of the twin stacked engines and in my mind it was the one that was closer to the Jagati :)

First paragraph of the fluff is inconsistent - taken straight it has the Ravens cutting the Wolves off from use of the Lum yards as something intended to improve relations between the Clans. I suspect it's an artifact of a previous version you didn't quite finish amending.
