Light Attack Craft

Hi I was rereading my one of my favorite series of books the Honor Harrington series. They used L.A.C.'s in attack and defensive roles. I was thinking they could be used by the Republic. They would weigh in between 100 thru 200 tons. An example of a possible Light Attack Craft is The K-1 Dropshuttle which are armed with 1 Lrm-5 Launcher , 4 Medium Lasers and 1 Small Laser but they weigh 200 tons.

The closest equavilant to a HH type of LAC would be roughly a 30,000 to Aerodyne, as the HH LAC's are of that tonnage

Current tech for small craft is not as mass or cost efficient as fighters, to break even you need to use ballistic and or missile weapon systems, as the number of free heatsinks are very small in number in SC's almost making it into a cost and tonnage breaker when energy weapons are mounted in a usable number.

Hi I was reading through the Prototypes Techmanual and lo and behold what do I find but an example of Light Attack Craft the Tauran Foxhound. It is a military spheroid with a mass of 180 tons. It is armed with Two Er Large Lasers, Two Improved Gauss Rifles and Two Laser Anti-Missile Systems. My it seems someone from Catalyst read my topic and put the concept in the Techmanual.  :)  I think I should get credit.  :) Well That is my Two Credits  :)  ;)

The concept of the armed Small Craft has been around since TRO 3026 (Revised) in 2005, with the Lyonesse (175 tons) and Aquarius (200 tons).

I'm not seeing the difference, as it would, at most, come down to your "attack craft" carrying more fuel, at the expense of either weaponry or armor.  However, as pointed out by others, the cost/benefit to armed small craft really stinks, because they get almost none of the free equipment handed out to ASFs, making it very difficult to produce an armed small craft that is more useful than a fighter.

Given that your inspiration, the LACs from Weber's HH series, were originally short-ranged defensive craft, I think the Lyonesse and Aquarius are exactly what LACs up through Honor Among Enemies were portrayed as, and it isn't until LACs were given fission (vice fusion) powerplants and side/bow walls that they ended up as anything useful.  Short of a similar technology being created at the staff's whim, I don't see armed small craft growing past their limited existence.

Hi I was looking at the Merc Tech readout 3145 pdf. They have an Aerodyne called The Condottiere Assault Craft. It is what I had in mind when I started this thread.

the Aquarius and Lyonesse escorts are another example of the craft you are looking for and reminded me of the role the Assault Gunboat played in the old TIE Fighter games on DOS.
