Cargo and passengers
« on: August 02, 2015, 03:33:11 PM »

Any idea how much cargo space is needed to allow 1 passenger to travel?
I am not looking for a perfect cabin but for something made out of despair for immediate planet evacuation (or something like that).

Good question Ice. Steerage quarters I believe cost you 5 tons but somewhere I remember seeing (perhaps the Ghost Bear's Leviathan Transport) such calculations. You'd have to factor in life support of the ship for factors such as breathable air. Could be a real disaster if you make it on board such a sinking ship.

Basic seating costs 75 kg per person.  Infantry Compartments are supposed to fit 8 - 10 people per ton IIRC, so 100 - 125 kg per person.  These are both intended for short-term occupation only, and include the passengers and their chair and not much else (maybe some entertainment systems, pooling mass from multiple seats for basic food and toiletries).  Canned air is needed for space trips, as these have no Life Support.

For longer term habitation, the Infantry Bay (Foot) costs you 5 tons for 28 people.  Packed in like sardines with communal facilities is how some people have reasoned the bays work in the past.  The smallest Quarters cost you at least 5 tons per person (Steerage), but includes things like personal rooms, life support, and an actual bathroom.

Done and although it is quite interesting, I don't have anything to make the maths as a lot of things are different.
I have to look more closely at it.

I might be misremembering something Ice. I'll have to take a look myself.

Essentially the weight of the passenger and his luggage. BUT!!! The mass for canned life support makes such moves real desperate.

IIRC the mass is:
1 ton / 200 proper quartered passengers /day
1 ton / 20 bay type quartered passengers /day
1 ton / 10 cargo type passengers /day

I would give you the page ref but it is cleverly hidden somewhere illogical in the rules.
EDIT: p155 in Strat Ops... under <Transport Bays and Doors
It sort of breaks my old Mauretania class liners.

Thanks CJvR.

I found this "or even allocating crew quarters in the form of a dedicated infantry bay, where the crew sleeps in cramped bunks with no private space whatsoever.", which is my basic idea.

Those are the supplies needed.

Yes, the only other mass is the bay tonnage for the barrack style accommodations, moving people as cargo requires nothing except the people themselves and enough supplies to keep them alive.

Yes but I only found out after your answer and going through CBT forums.
I will try to do some maths to see what I can do.

Thanks.

So an overlord or union could carry refugees?  Or a warship? As in BoI?

Yes but I did the maths for the Mule and the most efficient solution if you have to go through long distances is to use the cargo bays but to put some equipment in it (steerage and stuff like that), otherwise, you won't go far (from an interstellar point of view).

So the Mule has 3 Cargo Bays of 2,715; 2,715 and 2,714 tons.
Let's go for full Cargo Bays (easier to do).
One will be converted to transport passengers and the others 2 be kept for supplies (trust me on this one).

With 28 infantry men needing 5 tons, you can put in 2,715 tons, 15,204 people.
With the steerage, 1 ton of supplies allows 200 man/days; with 5,429 tons, you can get 1,085,800 man/days or enough supplies for a travel of 71 days.
