==Overview:==
Sixteen Brilliant class Escort Destroyers were undergoing trials in the
Periphery during the Amaris Coup. These ships would become the only examples
of their classes, but none would enter the serve of the Rims Worlds. Designed
soley for missile engagements against both fighters and capital WarShips, the
Brilliants were fearsome opponents until their magazines ran dry: after which
they lacked any offensive weapons. Defensively, these ships carried more
anti-missile systems than the majority of the rest of the SLDF Fleet combined,
as well as a thick shell of ferro-carbide armor protection.
Committed in engagement after engagement to pave the road for SLDF Task
Forces, the sixteen Brilliants were extinct by the end of the Liberation of
the Terran Solar System. While they lasted, however, they were the most
lethal foes Rim World fighters and DropShips could have the misfortune of
encountering.
==Capabilities:==
Massing just 560,000 tons, the Brilliants were not large ships, but still
managed to pack substantial firepower and defensive systems within their
hulls. Able to keep pace with the Lola III Destroyers, these ships were
intended to serve as convoy escorts and anti-aerospace escorts for capital
WarShips (and the SLDF planned to build a larger class that included a
lithium-fusion battery to escort their McKenna class battleships once the bugs
were worked out, but those plans died during the Coup). 672 tons of
ferro-carbide armor provides excellent armor plating for its weight class, and
the installation of no few than one hundred and twenty Anti-Missile Systems
(15 per arc) meant that only seldom could Amaris forces slip a missile of
their own past the defensive fire. Forty Maelstrom AR-10 capital missile
launchers formed the sole armament of these ships, with five AR-10s in each
arc. Each AR-10 was given 30 capital missiles (10 Barracuda, 10 White Shark,
and 10 Killer Whale), forcing the Brilliants to rely on a nearby source of
resupply.
Like all SLDF destroyers, the Brilliants lacked docking collars, but did carry
6 aerospace fighters and two small craft. Although incredibly effective in
their designed role, the destruction of the Mars shipyards during the
Liberation of Terra (and the plans for the Brilliant class) ensured that these
ships would never again live.
