Overview:
Interested more in growing their pleasure industry then military conquest, the Magistracy of Canopus had little need for a large military. The main concern of the Magistrix was to safeguard the nation’s space ways protecting vital trade and passenger lines from bandits. In 2562, the MAF issued a request for a new fighter to supplement the Sabre fighters that were being produced by Raimei. The MM-0 was introduced in 2568 and remained in limited production until it was replaced by the MM-1 Dragonfly in 2574.
Capabilities
When the MAF issued it’s request to Majesty Metals & Manufacturing, they requested that the new design feature longer range weaponry then the Sabre. Using plans that were covertly acquired by Canopian agents, MM&M reworked the basic Sabre design into the new fighter. Needing more room for heavier weaponry, the design team replaced the Sabres Nissan 225 engine with the smaller Magna 200. This allowed them to replace the nose mounted Tronell II laser with a Blazefire Systems Large Laser. The placement of the Blazefire laser interfered with the nose fuel tank, which had to be removed, reducing the amount of fuel carried.
In an effort to hide the fact that the Wildcat was copy of the Sabre, the armor placement was completely redesign, changing the appearance of the fighter. The new armor design was less effective then the Sabre’s and as a result the Wildcat has slightly less protection.
Despite the number of changes made to the design, the one element that was not changed was the heat dissipation system. With so many lasers, the Wildcat suffered from severe overheating issues, forcing pilots to be selective in what weapons they used.
Deployment:
The Wildcat was never built in large numbers. Only produced for 6 years, the design was more of test bed, for both the engineers in charge of designing new aerospace fighters for the MAF and for the factories that would have to build them. With the introduction of the MM-1 Dragonfly in 2574, the Wildcat ended production. The design was expected to be withdrawn from service by 2580, but the out break of the Reunification War kept them in service. The Wildcat generally performed well against the Star Leagues light fighters, but many were lost simply due to the SLDF’s overwhelming numbers. By the end of the war less then half a dozen Wildcats remained operational. They continued to serve with the MAF until they last 2 were lost fighting in the Uprisings of 2765.
