==Overview:==
Though the Ghost Bear fleet includes a few large WarShips, including a
Nightlord-class battleship, it has never been exceptionally large or powerful.
In an effort to bring their navy into line with their strength on the ground,
Ghost Bear Khans Nornian Tseng and Ursula Jorgesson authorized the creation of
a new class of WarShip in 3044. In the grand tradition of their Clan, they
insisted it be the largest WarShip possible, larger than even the massive
McKenna battleship.
Bear scientists were eager to take on the challenge, but after a few
years it was clear that the challenge was beyond their ability. The Ghost
Bears turned to their long-time allies Clan Snow Raven for help in designing
the new ship class, in exchange for mining rights in their abundant asteroid
fields. After the formal trials, the partnership began in earnest that would
create the Leviathan.
The arrival of the Outbound Light put a wrinkle in their plans. With two
of the new ships well under construction, the Trails for Operation Revival
began. When the Ghost Bears earned a place in the invasion and the Ravens did
not, the Raven Khans were suddenly less enthusiastic about the project. The
new Ghost Bear Khans were also less committed to the Leviathan than their
predecessors, and construction ground to a halt.
With the ascendance of aerospace pilot Bjorn Jorgensson to Khanship, the
Leviathan project was again of prime interest to the Ghost Bears. However, the
Snow Ravens were otherwise engaged with their rivals the Jade Falcons, and
were still unwilling to aid the Bears in completing the WarShips. After the
Battle of Tukayyid, the Ghost Bear Khans made their monumental decision to
relocate their Clan to the Inner Sphere. A major challenge was how to
transport millions of people across a thousand light years in secret.
A solution came in the form of the two partially-completed Leviathan
hulls. Though devoid of much of their planned weaponry, both ships were
functional and armored. Khan Jorgesson arranged for the hulls to be modified
to accomodate thousands of tons of cargo rather than weaponry. Each Leviathan
would have the appearance of a fearsome battle-cruiser, but would actually be
a large-scale armored transport. With the appearance of patrolling the Clan's
Deep Periphery supply lines, they were in fact moving millions of Ghost Bear
lower-caste citizens to the Inner Sphere.
Though the Leviathan is not the doomsday WarShip its creators envisioned,
it proved to be an indispensable resource for Clan Ghost Bear. Each ship can
transport more than a quarter-million passengers, plus supplies and
prefabricated settlements massing more than 300,000 tons. It is also standrad
practice for the ships to support six to eight transport DropShips loaded with
extra passengers and cargo.
