Ogedei Heavy OmniFighter.

Ogedei Heavy OmniFighter.

In the immediate aftermath of Operation REVIVAL’s halt after the Battle of Tukkayid, Clan Smoke Jaguar found itself in dire straits.  Militarily the Clan was exhausted, the battles on Wolcott, Luthien and Tukkayid had all but shattered the Jaguar’s Tourman and despite frantic rebuilding efforts, including accelerating the latest Sibkin through training with Warriors as young as 16 being sent to reinforce the Jaguar’s holdings, they were barely keeping up with losses.
The Jaguar’s aerospace losses were just as heavy and the deaths of many of the more experienced pilots left a vacuum in training that needed to be filled.  Rotating their surviving pilots back to the Homeworlds to have them help train the next generation just wasn’t possible as it would critically weaken the defences of key worlds.  The answer came in laying up several WarShips, stripping out their crews and any pilots and rotating these to front line forces whilst experienced pilots were rotated back.  At a stroke the Jaguar’s laid up half their available WarShips, freeing up thousands of personnel but in essence ‘robbing peter to pay paul’.  Even with accelerated training and a short lowering of standards to build up numbers the Jaguars needed to keep their pilots alive and their premier front line fighter, the Sabutai just wasn’t very good at this role.

The Sabutai was seen as the ideal heavy OmniFighter for the Clan way of war.  Fast and agile for a 75-ton craft and supremely manoeuvrable in an atmosphere thanks to its large wing areas and control surfaces, the Sabutai could turn inside many hostile interceptors.  Its huge firepower was enough to rival a DropShip and it could gut an opposing fighter in a heartbeat.  But this all came at a cost.  To save weight to make room for the engine and warload, the Sabutai’s fuel tank was tiny and even using Ferro-Aluminium, the protection of the craft was more suitable for fighters 10 or 20 tons lighter.  But these flaws were not discovered during the trials prior to REVIVIAL.  For Clan battles, it was perfect, it would go up, smash a target and return to base, a Trial won, an enemy defeated.  But the Inner Sphere didn’t play by Clan rules and battles to control a world were rarely won within the tightly controlled and strictly regimented rules of Zellbrigen.  And now the faults of the Sabutai showed themselves.  With its short range it was dependent on the construction of forwards operating bases to land and refuel at, and these were vulnerable to attack by Spheroid forces or partisan attacks.  Keeping them on DropShips in orbit wasn’t suitable as a Sabutai might only have 15 to 20 minutes of operating time over a battlefield before having to return to base to refuel.  The fighter’s thin armour also made it worryingly vulnerable to ground fire and there was an alarming spike in casualties amongst Sabutai pilots once the House Lords started to respond to the Clans assault on their space.

Following the Truce of Tukkayid the badly mauled Jaguars were frantically rebuilding their forces and the Sabutai came under scrutiny.  Whilst its firepower and effectiveness in a dogfight couldn’t be understated, the Scientists were tasked with improving the fighter’s survivability.

The base chassis was altered with a larger fuel tank capable of taking 5-tons of fuel which greatly increased its endurance and range, whilst the armour was increased to 13 tons of Ferro-aluminium.  This did mean that the armament payload was somewhat diminished, but the fighter still had a lethal punch.  Initially called the Sabutai II, the new design was renamed the Ogedei before it was rushed into production.

Variants

Prime – Retaining the paired ER PPCs and gauss rifle of the Sabutai, the Ogedei Prime gave up one large pulse laser, whilst the other was mounted in the nose.  The pair of ER small lasers covering the tail were moved to the wings whilst one ER small laser would now cover the tail.  The Gauss rifle also received an extra ton of ammunition.  Some units with less experienced pilots replaced the ER PPC’s with large pulse lasers, making up for the weaker punch with far greater accuracy.

A – Designed as a ground attack craft the A looses firepower but gains flexibility.  The ultra 20 autocannon’s are replaced with a pair of LB-20 pattern autocannons, each with 2-tons of ammunition whilst it gains long range firepower from a pair of ER large lasers in the nose.  An ER medium laser in each wing adds to the strafing firepower of the fighter whilst an ER small laser covers the aft.  For anti-DropShip roles the LB-20’s are often replaced with paired Ultra 20’s and this is a common swap seeing as many Ogedei pilots are familiar with the Xerxes and the weapons mix is very similar to that second line fighter.

C – Operating as a heavy interceptor and ground attack fighter the C’s main punch comes from a quartet of ER large lasers as well as enough heatsinks to fire all of them.  Close in saturation fire is covered by a quintet of Medium pulse lasers, with one covering the rear and two in each wing.  Able to engage targets beyond most return fire, the C is somewhat jokingly seen as too precise for a Jaguar design, but its efficiency cannot be denied.

D – A multi-role fighter able to destroy ground and air targets the D is built to get in close and cripple targets.  Paired large pulse lasers provide long range fire whilst an LB-10 autocannon with 2-tons of ammunition can cause heavy damage.  At medium range the D’s missiles come into action, paired Streak 6 and paired Streak 4 launchers can unleash a wall of missiles which can weaken a targets armour or foul control surfaces and motive systems.  Two ER small lasers cover the fighter’s rear whilst a third sits almost unnoticed under the nose.

I like the idea of them being forced to shut down some warships in order to gather the personnel needed to fill the gaps. If this were to play out would you think there could a few options. Some of the Home Crusader Clans might trade sibkos to the Jaguars for Inner Sphere resources, some Home Clans might try and Trial for the Warships being prepared for being Mothballed, a rival Clan might institute Trials against these "green" aerospace assets to gain concessions from the Jaguars.

And again sensible changes to the design, enough to make strategic advances without removing tactical ones.

Again you hit on some very similar themes as is unfolding with Quicksilver. Do you remember this topic from last year -

Elect a new Smoke Jaguar saKhan
https://www.ourbattletech.com/forum/index.php?topic=3257.0

After the trial had concluded we (myself, Bradshaw, Gus, winterwolf aka Calderon) sat down and considered some things regarding its effects. Regarding personnel saKhan Nahuel Montizima will be taking a more active role as commander of Alpha Galaxy as well as implementing day to day decisions while Khan Lincoln Osis continues to heal. Devon Osis is promoted to Galaxy Commander in charge of Beta pending a valid Trial of Position for said rank - thus keeping an undesirable abtakha like Star Colonel Mikhal Ward (originally from the Wolf Clan) in his current position. Needing a new Aide de Camp and Champion to defend his position while he recovers Khan Lincoln Osis has installed Star Colonel Erik Furey in this role. Loremaster Lamar Kotare is still a big question mark whose time seems to be short.

We have not resolved exactly what will happen to him yet but one thing is for sure - he and his supporters are marked men. He is badly hurt as a result of his duel and his supporters are no doubt under fire by Team Osis-Montizima. Love to hear what you guys think his fate should be. How bad are his injuries (5 MechWarrior hits during that gauss slug to the head)? Will another Clan claim him and other undesirables the Jaguars no longer want? Would he escape to join the Bandit Caste whose influence might be on the rise in this Clan after his fall and Montizima's rise? Suicide is of course an option as well is murder by rivals within the Clan, after all what lengths will these Jaguar Supremacist go to win?

Montizima's first reform to enhance the strength of the Clan is to permit a Third Trial of Position for Smoke Jaguar Trueborn Warriors who if successful can go onto serve in the Watch or Clan police forces (aka third line troops needed). I am considering letting Warriors test up or down in this three-tier system on a limited basis but as of now better pass your first Trial or it is all downhill for you Jaguar fans.

Streamlining the Touman by establishing a new five trinary ceiling on Clusters helped create a new formation, Montizima's Jaguar Knights now the new core of Alpha Galaxy. Yes, Star Colonel Babur Rakhmatulina did barely pass his Trial to take the commanding officer title there. We got rid of the Jaguar Cavalier designation (now just the 3rd Assault Cluster) and the Striker Cluster which maybe his biggest reform. Light Clusters will now be known as the Smoke Reavers and they will concentrate in Delta Galaxy fighting the InnerSphere. Equipped with Light OmniMechs (Mist Lynx, Arctic Cheetah, etc), Naval Elementals and Naval Aerospace Pilots they will mercilessly attack House Kurita. While the Reavers get a full trinary of aerospace fighters other clusters in the touman will likely get a star or maybe two which is a big cause not too many units had integral fighter support.

This streamling is possible because of the Jaguars Mech heavy organization (the average cluster has 60 Mechs) which does not feature Fighter Trinaries. Some Clusters have Aerospace Stars (10 fighters) at the most while others lack any fighters whatsoever. So if we can trim them to Clan standard (45 Mechs, 30 Fighters, 75 Elementals) by using naval support assets I think we are in business.

In truth the Jag's can't afford to give up anyone.  I'll have to read up on the Jags but IIRC, their training is the harshest and has the highest failure rate for their sibko.  So they don't make many new Warriors with those who fail usually being killed, but it did produce very good warriors in limited amounts.

This is basically the same problem as the Japanese in WW2, the IJA/IJN was very unwilling to sacrifice quality for quantity until it was far too late.  Folks think that Midway destroyed the Japanese air arm, it destroyed their carriers but many pilots survived. The meatgrinder of the Solomon's Campaign was the one that did that, along with the Second Battle of the Solomons that killed the majority of the trained pre-war cadre.
The IJN also didn't rotate pilots home to let them rest or assist with training new pilots.  And this I think would be the same with the Jags.  To try and rebuild their numbers following Tukkayid they would need to use their training cadre personnel to bulk up numbers (which is what the IJN did following the solomons) and this results in a loss of experience for new Sibkin, but they still keep their brutally high levels of injured/killed because its all they know.

Its why I thought that decomissioning some WarShips and putting their crews into second line units and rotating f2nd line troops back to the 1st line units with the 'promise' of honour etc if they should succeed.  Basically the Jag's have a MASSIVE manpower shortage and don't really have the means to correct this quickly.  So they need to get troops from somewhere, even if its distasteful.  But if you could get Lincoln Osis to actually agree to anything like this is another problem as he strikes me as a man who once he says no, means it and there's no room for any discussion outside of that.

Now it is to be seen if Nahuel Montizima will feed into Lincoln's modus operandi and mindset (i.e "IMMA PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE!" and/or the Scream and Leap frontal attacks the Jag's under Leo Showers didn't just embody but were avatars of (seriously, Leo seemed to have precisely zero strategic sensibility :s ) or if he'll try and help shape the Jaguars into something else that will help them survive.  But the Jaguars are brutal, bloodthirsty monsters and they embody all thats worst about the Clans and their ways.  And Lincoln Osis is the 'ideal' Jaguar warrior when it came to that.

I like the idea of reworking the incredibly Mech heavy Clusters the Jag's had.  This might be hard to push through but in reality there's not much of the Jaguars senior leadership left alive who can argue against it.  And with Lincoln Osis currently incapacatated but still basically unchallengable by anyone in his Clan, the obstruction to any reform he represents is currently sidelined and the SaKhan is running the Clan.  Lets hope that when he recovers, Lincoln don't decide to remind everyone just who's in charge by ripping Nahuel's head off.

And speaking of ripping heads off. I don't think that Lamar Kotare is long for this world.  He's lucky to have recovered from the injuries he sustained (go Clan medical science) but his (to the Jags) horifically liberal ideas are going to be his downfall.  He seems to have had a 'Road to Damascus' moment, or as Churchill said 'Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.'  But instead of hurrying off, he saw the reality of things and what was really needed for the Clan to survive.  But these ideas are against nearly everything the Jaguar Warrior Caste stands for.  I mean seriously...treating the Civilian Caste as useful assets not expendable chattel, what is next?  The Jaguars worship what Franklin Osis was like but they forget that he also had a Road to Damascus moment and tempered his fury and callousness towards the end of his life (allbeit only a little bit).

Depending on his injuries, Lamar could well have issues getting back into a Mech again (5 hits to the head will probably = some neuralogical damage) and if he can't pilot a Mech then he's basically nothing to the Jags and will be challenged and killed or simply thrown out with the bathwater.  And if/when that happens his followers are either going to have to very publically recant their 'beliefs' or face challenges themselves. Or they could find themselves in front line units leading assaults as a kind of forlorne hope where the cold hard mathmatics of warfare will no doubt 'deal with them'.  Probably helped by them all being reassigned to Hunchback IIC's as a sign of their disfavour.

Sadly Lamar Kotare escaping a negative fate seems unlikely to happen. Bondsref or some sort of ritual suicide for him is probably the most likely outcome due to incapacitation. His elder faction of Jags will not likely be such a force again. I expect his most vocal supporters to be hounded out of the Clan as well.

So far i have only reordered the Light Clusters of the Clan to this aerospace heavy disposition. I'll have to look at my records when i get home for the exact effect of this reorganization but i was not planning on shutting down parts of their Navy. Perhaps i should??

In any event I've been working on aerospace fighters with Bradshaw. Hopefully i will have something for u soon.

or they go 'underground' so to speak.  In reality the Jag's can't afford a schismatic purge of the ranks so to speak at the moment when their ranks are so low as is.  So, like the Soviet officers who survived the Purges of the 30s, they go underground with their ideas.  In the Soviet officers case it was forbidden doctrinal ideas like the concept of Deep Battle, here for the jag's its a case of publically and vocally distancing themselves from the fallen Loremaster, and instead waiting for the time to be right for the chance to put a suitable candidate forwards to lead the Jaguars away from this self destructive path.

To a large degree you are right. I feel Kotare and his Elder faction did so well because of the front line holocaust which occurred during the invasion. Most of his support came from the second line forces of the Clans who have by their nature been humbled and are older than their front line brethren. I had hopes that young Jaeger movement led by Erik Furey would shift the Clans focus as well but the Supremacist win under Montizima has cemented the power of the Traditionalists led by Lincoln Osis. With those three factions pulling down over 63% of the vote in the sakhan Trial that leaves just over 36% who voted for Kotare basically a third of the Clan. The Jags you are quite correct can not get rid of them but they can get rid of those who were most vocal in support of Kotare. The Loremaster position will go to someone else likely Devon Osis and without leadership these Elders will live out their existence in second and third (Watch/Police) line units perhaps never getting another shot at the title. The only way I could actually see one of 'theirs' evolve into a Khan would be a person like Lincoln Osis over decades of grim reality learning from experience. Sadly the Jags live fast and die young.

Question.

You mention Supremasists, Traditionalists and the like what is this? is it a canon thing or something that came from the Quicksilver writings?

And yeah the most vocal supporters of Kotare - Star(s) of Rage II Electric Boogaloo. (http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Star_of_Rage)

These internal factions are my creation based on existing canon maerial. Sort of political parties they take an aspect of a Clan to its extreme or embody a current philosophy. This was seen here and during the Coyote Khan election as well. I'd love to hear suggestions for other Clans too probably in another thread if you guys would like to discuss that further.

The Star of Rage is a neat little story but i don't think any of my four Jaguar factions embraced a Warden ideology. The Crusader way predominates here much like the way the Warden does in Clan Coyote following the Blood Scandal. While the Reactionaries there were described derisively as 'Shadow Crusaders' none truly were. Kotare's Elder movement likewise probably heard the same political smears (Shadow Wardens) but they were Crusaders.

RE these political things I think we're gonna need a thread for that and a clarification of what it is etc.  Indeed, I feel this is kind of critical to the Quicksilver AU and its probably something we should all be aware of and have a nice central post where it is explained and we can discuss it.  I don't know if there are other Quicksilver lore snippets or background (the ilkhan's election etc) but all of the information you can give to build up the setting will help us expand upon it and discuss it.

I have posted a central thread for just this purpose.
