Quicksilver Program #24: 85 ton Clan Omnifighter
« on: November 16, 2014, 11:18:33 AM »

Well as you guys have probably guessed the Quicksilver Trails now get into the real aerospace heavies. This time we need an 85 ton OmniFighter and there are a couple of useful components already produced by the Clans. The Smoke Jaguars are perhaps the best suited for development even though their industrial capacity is diminishing. In 2827 it was their Clan that created the 85 ton Xerxes second line fighter which is still produced on Kirin. Additionally they produce the 340XL Engine for the Warhawk (Masakari) giving them the biggest head start of any Clan on this project. Can or will they find an ally though to help them win the day?

There is also another existing 85 ton air frame that the Clans could have available to them which could help development. The Rapier first made in 2596 for the SLDF would be available for prototype and testing even though existing production like the Xerxes would not be currently available. What is currently produced is the new 255XL Engine by Clan Coyotes for their recently developed Savage Coyote. While slower than their potential Smoke Jaguar backed competitor both could still lead to an effective design. Other frames and engines would likely have to be built from scratch possibly affecting this contest’s ultimate outcome.

The frontrunners include Coyote and Nova Cat who are perhaps the most powerful Clans without an OmniFighter design of their own. Do not forget the Cloud Cobras who have a special interest in this area with plenty of industrial room. Fire Mandrill, Hell’s Horses, and Ice Hellion remain very viable contenders who also lack their own OmniFighter. Diamond Shark and Goliath Scorpion already have won a Quicksilver Aerospace Trail but have space for more. Unfortunately Blood Spirit, Ghost Bear, Steel Viper, Star Adder, and Wolf will not enter this competition themselves saving their industry for other projects. Burrock, Jade Falcon, and Snow Raven are unable to participate having already topped out their production capacity. Despite being in the same boat the Smoke Jaguars are well positioned to assist the winning designer.

Clan Industrial Commitments 3052
Blood Spirit [3 OmniMechs]
Burrock [3 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Cloud Cobra [1 OmniMech & 1 OmniFighter]
Coyote [2 OmniMechs]
Diamond Shark [3 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]

Ghost Bear [5 OmniMechs & 2 OmniFighters]
Goliath Scorpion [1 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Hell's Horses [1 OmniMech & 1 OmniVehicle]
Ice Hellion [2 OmniMechs]
Jade Falcon [6 OmniMechs & 2 OmniFighters]
Nova Cat [3 OmniMechs]
Smoke Jaguar [5 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Snow Raven [1 OmniMech & 3 OmniFighters]
Star Adder [3 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Steel Viper [4 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]
Wolf [6 OmniMechs & 1 OmniFighter]

Clan Omnifighter Naming Conventions are important as well. Over half (7) of the original Clan Omnifighters featured in Technical Readout 3055 do ascribe to a Warrior Tribe designation. We further have commented on themes for each Clan (Coyote for example being so heavily influenced by American Indians particularly from the Southwest make tribes there ideal for potential design names) in the last design thread. There are also seven (7) named Clan fighters which were designated in honor of Khans/Generals of Antiquity (Batu, Sulla, Jagatai, Sabutai, Jengiz, Ogotai, and Qasar) so you could go in that direction if you please. Remember the winning design will be featured in Technical Readout 3054: Quicksilver Trails along side other winners. Good luck everybody!

Criteria

HUN

Overview:  Scorpion Beginnings

The design and development of the new heavy-weight Clan Hun OmniFighter is a convoluted tale which shows well the pit-falls and dangers inherent to the Clan production system, despite being a design intended to serve all of the existing Clans of Kerensky and not just the developers.

The concept of the Hun arose during the Trials to determine who the Invading Clans would be.  In the early months of 3049, Khan Nikolai Djerassi determined that Clan Goliath Scorpion would need a new heavy-weight design to supplement existing aerospace and OmniFighters within his Touman.  Although quickly eliminated from consideration for Revival, Djerassi ordered his Scientists to press ahead with the design, computer modeling, and development of the Hun.

Feeling little pressure of time constraints (and recognizing that in all likelihood the fighter would never fly), the Scientists spent over three years running simulations and building computer models of the new OmniFighter, in several major variations.  Basing the design upon the existing Xerxes second-line Aerospace Fighter frame, the Scorpions simply copied the Jaguar communications system and T&TS array outright, along with the Compound XAS ferro-aluminum armor (although they did incorporate far more armor plating than the existing Xerxes frames).

Four competing computer models (Project AS-85/4-A, AS-85/4-B, AS-85/4-C, and AS-85/4-D) emerged, with the primary difference between them being the engine.  The 4-A variant included a high-powered 340-rate Extra-light fusion engine allowing for a maximum thrust of 4.5-g's, while the 4-B used a smaller 255-rate XL engine with a maximum capacity of 4-g's.  Neither engine was currently in production by the Scorpions, but the Scientists behind the design viewed that as irrelevant as they sought to refine the new OmniFighter.  The short-lived 4-C and 4-D featured the same thrust as the 4-A and 4-B, respectively, but used standard engines to lower cost.  However, these variations were quickly discarded as the lower acquisition value did not fully compensate for the loss of pod-space.

Eventually, a consensus settled upon the 4-B model, which despite the lower acceleration managed to carry forty-eight tons of pod-space in addition to the five fixed heat sinks that would be installed alongside the engine (more than 56.4% of the planned 85-ton mass of the fighter; 62.5% if one includes the weight of the fixed DHS!).

In the wake of Tukayyid and ilKhan Kerensky's calls for new thinking regarding OmniMechs and OmniFighters (as well as submissions for testing by the Clans), the Hun immediately came to the attention of Khan Suvorov.  Who, much to the horror of the Scientists involved in the research and development of the OmniFighter, announced that she was planning on starting full-scale production!

Despite having no factory that produced the electronics, armor, frame, or engines!

And with the threat of provoking Clan Smoke Jaguar into taking precipitous action against the Scorpions for stealing their designs!

Many within the Scorpion leadership were convinced that the Hun (regardless of how well the computer models and simulations performed) was simply one design too many.  Although the Clan had gained some victories in Project Quicksilver, it had also lost a great deal of resources in the competitions the Scorpions had lost.  And the recent failure of the Maori to be accepted for production had indebted the Scorpions to Clan Diamond Shark . . . whose Khan outright refused to even consider partnering with the Scorpions again (until a majority of that debt was paid back, at least).

But Khan Suvorov was adamant; she demanded that the Hun be produced . . . by hand, if necessary!

At which point saKhan Nelson Elam stepped in.  Challenging Khan Suvorov to a Trial of Refusal over her orders (but not a Trial of Possession for the rank of Khan), his public breach with her shocked Suvorov into reality.  Turning to Nikolai Djerassi for advice, she discovered that he too had doubts about whether or not the Scorpions could spare the resources that the Hun would require.  And he instead offered a compromise between the Khan and saKhan.

The Scorpions would broker a deal between the Smoke Jaguars and one other Clan to produce the design for Project Quicksilver.  Djerassi suggested the Coyotes, as their recent introduction of the Savage Coyote would fill the requirement for an extra-light 255-rate fusion engine (with modification for aerospace use, of course).

While both Elam and Suvorov were skeptical of either of those Clans agreeing to produce the Hun, it did allow both a face-saving gesture and would prevent a public split in the Scorpion leadership.  In 3052, Master of Instruction Nikolai Djerassi was formally asked to meet with the leadership of Clan Coyote and Clan Smoke Jaguar and hammer out a deal.

Overview:  Roaring Jaguars and Striking Scorpions

Djerassi immediately turned his attention to what he considered the more difficult of the two Clans to negotiate with:  Clan Smoke Jaguar.  Setting up a real-time HPG connection with Khan Lincoln Osis and saKhan Brandon Howell, he began the delicate attempt to gain permission from the extremely territorial Jaguars to use their design for the proposed Hun.

True to form, Osis was furious at the temerity of the Scorpions in using the Jaguar Xerxes without winning possession in a Trial!  Even after Djerassi pointed out (repeatedly) that such use was limited to computer modeling and simulations, Khan Osis was on the brink of all but declaring WAR against the Scorpions.

That was when Brandon Howell stepped in.  Well-regarded by even his enemies as thoughtful and a strategic thinker (in a Clan that valued strength of action over thought, no less!), Howell managed (barely) to convince his Khan to listen fully to what Djerassi had to offer.  In exchange for the use of a modified Xerxes frame, the Jaguars would supply the Coyotes with armor and electronics; and in return would receive a percentage of Coyote production of the Hun should the heavy-weight design win the Quicksilver Competition.  Djerassi added that the Jaguars manufacturing capacity was at the upper-most limits of what it was capable of producing . . . and that surely it was better to obtain new fighters for the Jaguar Touman through this means than stretch existing resources even further.

Although still fuming over the perceived theft and the implied insult (that the Jaguars simply could not afford to expand their industrial might any further), Osis listened.

And it was that moment that Djerassi smiled and added one final caveat. He suggested that with the strength and power that the Jaguar Touman possessed, that if the Hun won the competition, and if the Jaguars found themselves on the short end of this deal, then could not the Jaguars simply challenge the Coyotes to a Trial of Possession and seize the orbital complex where the design would be manufactured?  After the Coyotes had expended their resources on upgrading the complex in question?

For once in his life, Lincoln Osis was speechless; but Brandon Howell simply smiled and asked Djerassi what the Scorpions wanted in exchange for the design and brokering the deal.  Djerassi replied with five percent of the annual production  . . . in perpetuity.  Regardless of who owned the Hun production complex.

Osis laughed and he agreed.  But he insisted that the Jaguars would have to receive a full thirty-five percent of that self-same production in order for the Coyotes to receive the electronics and armor, as well as the Jaguar 'blessings' to use their frame.  In addition to being able to procure the Coyote engine at cost and full production rights, should the Jaguars find the excess capacity to produce the design in their own industrial complexes.

Djerassi countered with an offer of fifteen percent of the annual production.  Citing the other two Jaguar demands, he insisted that the Coyotes would never agree if Osis pressed for such a huge amount of air-frames.  Osis almost refused, but after a minute to confer with his saKhan, he accepted.  Saying that if the deal was not what the Jaguars expected that his Touman would indeed take the Coyote orbital facility by force.

Djerassi just smiled, and answered "Bargained well, and done."  And with that, he arranged for a JumpShip to carry him to Tamaron to meet with the Coyote Khans.

Overview:  Of Coyotes, Scorpions, and Wolves . . . OH MY!

When he arrived on Tamaron, Djerassi met with Khan Sullivan Koga, saKhan Pazi Tchernovkov, and the holographic image of ilKhan Ulric Kerensky (projected from the Invasion Zone over a real-time HPG feed).  There, he laid out the proposal that the Scorpions were offering . . . and the Jaguar terms.

The reception was a frosty one, to say the least.  The antagonism between the Wolves and Scorpions since Khan Suvorov had taken over the reins of the Clan had forced the ilKhan to distance himself from Djerassi . . . and always staunch allies of Clan Wolf, the Coyotes looked upon the offer (initially) askance.  Especially since they would have to deal with the Jaguars, a rabidly Crusader Clan detested by many within the Coyote rank-and-file.

And the terms of the agreement were not something that inspired the Coyotes (or the ilKhan) to make the bargain.  What is more, saKhan Tchernovkov asked, even if we win, what is preventing the Jaguars from waiting for us to expend our resources and then appear in orbit demanding a Trial of Possession for the factory?

"Nothing," Nikolai answered, "and I suggested as much to the Jaguar Khans myself."

Recordings of the event showed that no one spoke after that for almost two full minutes as the image of the ilKhan glared at the Scorpion and the Coyote Khans simply stood there slack-jawed!

When asked by the ilKhan (finally!) to explain his reasoning, Djerassi laughed.  "As an Invading Clan, the Jaguars territory in the Homeworlds is protected against Trials by those Clans not included in the Invasion.  Now, the Coyotes are not participants in Revival, quiaff?  Therefore, if, by purest happenstance, should the ilKhan announce that the this immunity against territorial and industrial aggression also prevents an Invading Clan from initiating such Trials of Possession here in the Homeworlds, than the Jaguars would be prevented from launching any such attacks on Tamaron."

After a moment's consideration, three frowning Khans (two Coyote and one Wolf) slowly nodded.  "And should it come to such, my Scorpions will always stand by their allies in defending their property."

"Will Suvorov agree?" barked the ilKhan.

"She will . . . or she will replaced.  It is the best interest of our Clan, of all the Clans, to keep the Jaguars off-balance."

"And what do the Scorpions get out of this?" asked Koga.

"Five percent of your annual production in perpetuity."  Djerassi smiled.  "Come now, Khan Koga . . . that is a bargain for an OmniFighter perfectly suited to your heavy-weight Touman composition.  And you know it."

Koga sighed and he looked at his saKhan, who nodded.  And then he looked at the ilKhan who also gave his approval, before returning his glare to the Scorpion in their midst.  Finally, the Coyote sighed again and he nodded.  "I will take that promise of alliance in writing, Scorpion . . . and my own Merchants will prepare the document so that there are NO loopholes."

"And I will enforce it," growled Ulric.

"Bargained well and done," Nikolai answered with a smile.

Capabilities

The Hun is an 85-ton heavy-weight OmniFighter built on a modified Type 42-5 Aero frame originally used for the Smoke Jaguar's Xerxes.  Clan Goliath Scorpion Scientists modified the frame by removing the fixed weapons and installing power and electronic connections for standard Clan omni-pods.  The KOW-Comm Type 9 communications system and AGS Mark VII targeting & tracking array from the Xerxes were retained in full.

In developing the Hun, Clan Goliath Scorpion incorporated the existing Compound XAS ferro-aluminum armor plating used on the Xerxes, but rather than the nine tons of the Jaguar design, the new OmniFighter instead carries seventeen and one-half tons.  This provides the Hun with sufficient armor protection to resist a threshold penetration by a Class 10 Autocannon, an Inner Sphere PPC, or a Clan Large Laser across the nose and wings.  The stern is the weakest area of coverage, but even there the Hun has enough armor to stop a Clan ER Medium Laser from penetrating.

The design features a Type 255-AS Extra-Light Fusion Drive derived from the Clan Coyote Savage Coyote OmniMech.  Although considered by some to be underpowered for a front-line OmniFighter, this engine allows the Hun to maintain an acceleration of 2.5-g's for extended periods of time and reach a maximum thrust of 4-g's.  A five ton internal fuel tank comes standard, giving the fighter average endurance when compared to the majority of current generation Clan and Inner Sphere designs.

Despite having fifteen fixed double-strength heat sinks, the Hun retains enough free mass and internal volume to house forty-eight tons of weapons and equipment within the nose, wing, and stern Omni-bays.   Carried ordnance and equipment is housed within a central bay beneath the main fuselage between the port and starboard engine housings.  Up to seventeen tons can be lifted, although carrying such a heavy payload reduces safe and maximum thrust to just 0.5-g's and 1-g, respectively.  As a practical limit, the Hun normally deploys with either five tons of ordnance (for a safe/max thrust of 2-g's/3-g's). ten tons (1.5-g's/2.5-g's) or fifteen tons (1-g/1.5-g's).  However, due to the sizeable amount of pod-space available on this OmniFighter, the Hun seldom carries any type of external load other than fuel drop-tanks.  This permits the Pilot assigned to this OmniFighter to enter a fight with full fuel tanks and maximum maneuverability (after dropping any remaining external tanks).

Configurations

The original Scorpion design was highly optimized to obtain concentrated firepower in the nose bays . . . a design and configuration decision with which the Coyotes and Jaguars have seemingly agreed as they retained the existing configurations.  Early flight tests have revealed the Hun as a capable and lethal 'DropShip-buster' (and 'WarShip-buster) with a truly frightening level of firepower when deployed as a unit of two or three points.

The Prime Configuration is an excellent example of this.  The main guns are four ER PPCs mounted in the nose, supported by a trio of rear-firing ER Medium Lasers.  All seven guns are tied into a six-ton Targeting Computer.  Fifteen additional DHS (for a total of thirty) allow the Hun Prime to use the nose guns as frequently as needed.  Few fighters, small craft, DropShips, or even WarShips can successfully take many impacts from the grouped ER PPCs.

Configuration A carries four Large Pulse Lasers in the nose, supported by two Medium Pulse Lasers in each wing.  A single Medium Pulse is set to cover the stern and the design incorporates an ECM Suite.  A total of twenty-eight DHS allows for the full use of all forward firepower without generating any excess overheat.

Configuration B is highly unusual.  An ECM Suite comes standard (as with the Hun A) and all six guns are tied into a six-ton Targeting Computer (as with the Prime).  But the five nose guns are all ER Large Lasers (providing the Hun B with the ability to engage targets at extreme range).  As with the Prime, thirty DHS allow for full use of this battery.  However, the rear-mounted weapon is an ER PPC!  This has come as a considerable surprise to opposing Pilots encountering the B Configuration for the first time, as few Pilots expect a weapon with that range and power to be facing to the rear!

The Hun C features a massed nose battery of five LRM launchers--all twenty-tube systems outfitted with Artemis IV fire-control.  Ten tons of ammunition allows for a total of twelve salvos of fire.  A dozen ER Small Lasers (four each in the right wing, left wing, and tail) provides secondary firepower in support of the missile battery.  All twelve lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer for maximum accuracy in close.  Heat can be a concern as the design only carries the fifteen fixed DHS, forcing the pilot to choose between the missiles and the lasers.

Configuration D features three LB-20X autocannons in the nose fed by six tons of ammunition (10 triple bursts).  Three Medium Pulse Lasers (nose, right wing, and left wing) serve as secondary weapons.  Like the Hun C, Configuration D carries just the standard fifteen fixed DHS.  But unlike that other configuration, on the D that is sufficient to use all weapons simultaneously without generating excess overheat.  Most Hun Ds carry a mixed load of slug and cluster munitions for the autocannons, sacrificing damage for accuracy (cluster) at long ranges and switching to the harder-hitting slugs for maximum firepower in close.

Designed to appeal to Clan Smoke Jaguar, the E Configuration carries two Ultra AC-20s in the nose fed by eight tons of ammunition.  Two ER Medium Lasers (right wing and left wing) and four ER Small Lasers (one each right wing and left wing, two astern) serve as secondary guns.  A six-ton Targeting Computer ensures the UACs and Lasers are almost always on target, while twenty-one DHS allows for use of all forward guns (with the UACs on double-tap mode) without a heat spike.

Deployment

while the design originated with Clan Goliath Scorpion, to date only Clan Coyote has produced any working Hun examples.  Of the twenty frames produced to date, a star of ten have been given to the Ebon Keshik for field testing, four have been handed over to Clan Smoke Jaguar, two to Clan Goliath Scorpion, and the remaining four have been assigned to the Coyote Golden Keshik. Another twenty are in production at Omega Orbital above Tamaron.

The years of refining the design has served well and eliminated the majority of the design glitches suffered by the earlier Maori design.  Pilots who have flown this frame have commented positively on the handling characteristics, both within and outside of an atmosphere.  The heavy firepower and solid armor protection have also been viewed with quite a bit of interest.

Wow, I thought you would reserve the Hun for the 95 ton frame MA. Interesting. I look forward to seeing more.

My original Hun concept (which was 95-tons) was flawed because I forgot that you cannot sub-divide a bay.  (Duh!)  Which means it couldn't use the mass ER Medium Lasers in the wings with two of the four ER PPCs in the nose . . . which was a big part of the fluff.  So I dropped its tonnage and still managed to get the same heavy damage nose bays, albeit without the extreme secondary weapons (which I couldn't, legally, use at the same time, anyway!).  Makes it cheaper as well and 85-tons includes my favorite 'Mech (the Stalker).  Plus, the Coyotes already make the 255XL that this fighter uses (Type 225 Extra Light from the Savage Coyote), while the Smoke Jaguars produce the Xerxes frame.

Those two (major) components played a big part in making the design 85- rather than 95-tons.

EDIT:  I've got to head to work today, so the fluff will be up later this week.  No promises on when, exactly.

Now, some explanations and thoughts behind the Hun.

What I have tried to pull off here is a design that is unabashedly intended as a "DropShip-buster" (and WarShips, as well!).  The main guns are concentrated in the nose providing concentrated damage that is able to shatter DS and WS with a single pass by a point, two points, or a half-star.

The Prime does 12 Capital (point), 24 Capital (two points), or 30 Capital (half-star) from those nose-mounted PPCs.  Which are tied into a Targeting Computer.  A flying NAC-30 battery that puts the fear of God into any DS or WarShip out there!

The A does less damage (8-C, 16-C, and 20-C, respectively with the nose LPLs), but with increased accuracy even without a TC.

The B is in between (10-C, 20-C, and 25-C) but has an ER PPC fixed to fire astern (!!!) with all guns tied into a TC.  Heaven help any light or medium who decides to get on the six of a Hun C!

Configuration C has the largest amount of raw damage with those 5 LRM-20s w/Artemis IV:  16-C, 32-C, and 40-C, but only has twelve shots.

Configuration D has the lowest damage when firing Cluster (7-C, 14-C, 18-C; all with a +1 bonus to hit), but is solid when firing slugs (12-C, 24-C, and 30-C), heh.

And then there is Configuration E with the twin UAC-20s (12-C, 24-C, and 30-C).

The secondary guns are just that . . . secondary that adds a bit more damage.  Or are intended to protect the rear.  Combined with the heavy armor (resisting 10 point hits across the nose and wings, 7 point hits astern), this makes the Hun a very solid and frightening OmniFighter.

At least in my opinion.

I did notice the Xerxes frame of course but combining that with the Coyote 225XL is an interesting thought I had not considered. Of course it is possible that the 'Yotes could have won the rights to the Xerxes frame or design long ago. I would think that in spite of their traditionalist mindset the Smoke Jaguars and the Coyotes would not cooperate. The history and the politics (Warden vs. Crusader) could be just too much to overcome. And if this truly is the Hun where are the Goliath Scorpions?!

I did sneak a peak at the weaponry and yeah this design would be a Shipbuster for sure. Can't wait for the details!!!

                     AeroTech 2 Vessel Technical Readout
                                  VALIDATED

Class/Model/Name:  Mohawk [base]
Tech:              Clan / 3050
Vessel Type:       Aerospace OmniFighter
Rules:             Level 2, Modified design
Rules Set:         AeroTech2

Mass:              85 tons
Length:            21 meters
Power Plant:       255 XL Fusion
Safe Thrust:       5
Maximum Thrust:    8
Armor Type:        Ferro-aluminum
Armament:
    2 Medium Pulse Laser
    43 tons of pod space
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

==Overview:==

A joint project with Clan Nova Cat, Clan Coyote developed this new OmniFighter
at the same time as the Arapaho, though the Mohawk was not a
secret project and shared its engine development program with the Savage
Coyote
OmniMech. The airframe is based on Slayers captured as
isorla by Clan Nova Cat from their early victories over the soldiers of
the Draconis Combine. The airframe was slightly smaller than they needed, so
they decided to lengthen the airframe just forward of the wings and adding
small canard winglet just below the cockpit.

The Mohawk is designed as heavily armored and armed strike aircraft.
its low speed threshold allows for a maximum amount of weapons space. With
16.5 tons of ferro-aluminum armor, it has more protection than a Dire
Wolf
OmniMech or any other fighter currently in existence amongst the
Clans. Though the engine is small, the Coyote and Nova Cat designer decided
only to mount twelve fixed double heat sinks to the frame leaving as much
weight as possible for weapons, ammunition and extra heatsinks, if necessary.
A key feature of this design is that the Coyote lead scientist decided to keep
the ten ton fule tank for the Slayer. This allows the Mohawk to
stay on station for longer periods of time when providing close air support to
Coyote ground forces. This left the Mohawk with forty-three tons of pod
space after the mounting of two medium pulse lasers in the aft weapons
housing.

==Configurations:==

Configuration Prime: As indicated by its name, the Prime has the most
powerful weapon available, the Gauss Rifle. A pair of these rifles are mounted
in the nose each fed by a three-ton magazine. The lone backup weapons a pait
of extended range large lasers mounted in the wings. Five additional heatsink
have been added to handle the heat buildup.

Configuration Alpha: This model is more general support variant with a
mix of missiles and autocannons providing the bulk of the offensive firepower.
Two Class 20 LB-X autocannons are mounted in the wing, while long-range
support is provided by a pair of Artemis IV-equipped LRM-10 launchers mounted
in the nose. Three additional heat sinks are mounted.

Configuration Beta: The Beta is a gun-based platform and features a
quartet of Class 5 LB-X autocannons, with two mounted in the nose and one in
each wing. Each cannon is fed by a two-ton magazine. A total of five extended
range medium lasers are mounted as secondary weapons to the autocannons. Two
additional heatsinks are mounted to deal with the heat.

Configuration Gamma: This model is a flying missile battery armed with
four Artemis IV-equipped LRM-15 launchers each with a three-ton missile
magazine. A total four extended range medium lasers and two exntended range
small lasers provide the only backup to the launchers. Eight additional
heatsinks are carried to deal with the heat.

Configuration Delta: Another flying missile battery, the Delta is
equipped with six Streak SRM-6 launchers, two in each of the wings and the
nose. A large pulse laser in the nose provides the long-range weapon that
allows this model to close with its target. An extended range medium laser is
mounted in each wing. A total of twenty-three heatsinks are mounted on the
Delta.

Configuration Epsilon: The final configuration is best suited for close
air support with a bevy of energy weapons filling the weapons bay. The nose
features all of the extended range weapons, while the wings feature the pulse
weapons. Two PPCs and two medium lasers are mounted in the nose. Each wing is
fitted with a large pulse laser. Twenty-nine heatsinks have been added to the
airframe to deal with the heat generated by all of these weapons.

==Overview:==

During the design process of the Mohawk a significantly large group
scientists led predominantly by Nova Cats along split off from the main group
and did a rework of the design. The prototype of the design was built using a
340XL salvaged from a damaged Warhawk increasing the overall
manueverability of the Comanche. The armor layout of the
Comanche is the same as the Mohawk, while a pair of extended
range medium lasers replace the pulser in the aft weapons station. The fuel
tank has been downsized down to the standrad five tons. The biggest deviation
from the Mohawk is the mounting of a pair of extended range PPCs  in
the wings as fixed weapons. This left only twenty-seven tons for additional
weapons and ammunition.

The purpose of the Comanche is to engage enemy heavy fighters and
interdict DropShips or the occasional WarShip. The use of the PPCs goes a long
to achieving this goal. Thanks to the high initial heat curve a total of
sixteen double heatsinks are mounted as fixed equipment.

==Configurations:==

Configuration Prime: Designed for long-range combat the Prime has a
Gauss Rifle mounted in the nose with a pair of Artemis IV-equipped LRM-10
launchers mounted in the wings. There is plenty of ammunition for both new
weapons systems. An additional heat sink is mounted.

Configuration Alpha: Another big gun carrying design with a Class 20
LB-X autocannon mounted in the nose. A total of five tons of ammunition feeds
the hungry autocannon. The Alpha is designed to be DropShip buster in
contested landing zones. A pair of medium pulsers backup the autocannon and
the PPCs. Six additional heat sinks are mounted.

Configuration Beta: The Beta adds a third PPC to the mix. A pair of
Artemis IV-equipped SRM-4 launchers share the nose with the PPC. A pair of
Artemis IV-equipped LRM-5 launchers are mounted in the wings for addiotanl
offensive firepower. Twenty-five double heatsinks are mounted to handle the
heat of the three PPCs.

Configuration Gamma: A long-range strike aircraft that features a pair
of Artemis IV-equipped LRM-20 launchers mounted in the nose with a total of
four tons of ammuniton. Additional firepower is prvided by a pair extended
range small lasers mounted in each wing. A total of twenty-five heatsinks are
mounted on the Gamma.

Configuration Delta: An assult craft, the Delta mounts a total of four
Streak SRM-6 launchers, with two in the nose and one in wach wing. A pair of
extended range medium lasers are mounted in the nose for additional firepower.
Nine additional heatsinks are carried as well.

Configuration Epsilon: An all energy-based weapon configuration which a
pair of large pulse lasers to the nose and  an extended range medium laser in
each wing. A total of twenty-nine heat sinks are carried to deal with the heat
of the weapons that are mounted.

I have to revise it. I changed it significantly from its first version and it requires a minor rewrite of the Overview fluff and a complete redux of the Configurations fluff as they have allbeen changed. Trust me there will be surprise for you when it's all done.

Code: [Select]
Class/Model/Name:  Kubulai
Tech:              Clan / 3052
Vessel Type:       Aerospace Fighter
Rules:             Level 2, Standard design
Rules Set:         AeroTech2

Mass:              85 tons
Frame:             Interstar 290M
Power Plant:       255 Fusion
Safe Thrust:       5
Maximum Thrust:    8
Armor Type:        PhilterMesh
Podspace:          52 tons
Manufacturer:      Industrialplex Upsilon
  Primary Factory: Niles
Communications System:  COMHRT II.Q
Targeting & Tracking System:  Bauer-Scope 130Y
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overview:
Clan Hells Horses and Clan Fire Mandrill generally have very little to find common cause over. However when their respective Watchs discovered the data for their entries to the 23rd Quicksilver Program had been mis-represented (falsely claiming the Timur wouldn't be practical without an entirely new engine source and under-rating the fuel capacity of the Nobunaga by 40%), they had a cause in common and pooled their resources for a final entry. It's one thing to lose a challenge fair and square but hell hath few furies equal to Khans who consider themselves to have been cheated.

Capabilities:
The Kubulai is at root a modified SLDF Rapier with the engines removed in favour of a smaller 255 fusion engine - providing marginally acceptable thrust for an attack role. While the Fire Mandrills provided the air frames, the Hells Horses were able to supply the engines by modifying reactors used in their Thunder Stallion BattleMechs.

The trade off for this is that the already cavernous nose weapon bay of the Rapier was extended in the Kubulai until it can contain more armament than any existing Clan omnifighter save for the Kirghiz.

The first configuration, used mainly as a test-bed, matched the payload of a Rapier, upgrading the armament to advanced Clan weapons and adding enough heatsinks to support an alpha-strike. The second configuration, the only one to see action so far, is a pure missile platform, with the capability to launch a hundred advanced guidance long range missiles per salvo.

Battle History:
The Kubulai has been deployed three times, in each occasion in Trials of Greivance against Clan Wolf dropships by a combined Binary of Fire Mandrill and Hells Horses warriors. It's anyone's guess how long it will be before the alliance inevitably crumbles or the ilKhan takes steps to curb the matter but thus far four Clan Wolf dropships have been destroyed for a loss of five of the Kubulai prototypes.

It's one thing to lose a challenge fair and square but hell hath few furies equal to Khans who consider themselves to have been cheated.

Having received your grievance the office of the ilKhan launched an immediate review of all data concerning the 23rd Quicksilver Trail. While the critique of the Timur's Star League XL Engine impeding full scale production stands the Nobunaga fuel capacity was in error. However, the data from both the Nobunaga and your latest entry, the impressive Kubulai, also seems to be in error. Example below.

Code: [Select]

Total Heat Sinks:    10 (20)                                             3.00

The Fire Mandrills accept responsibility for the erroneous reporting of heatsink tonnage and offer surkai and corrected data.

The Hells Horses submit for the record the fact that the Timur is designed to use an engine in ready availability from the Brian Caches in more than sufficient quantity to support the production of the design in the short term, allowing plenty of time for the construction of a new factory line for the engines and if desired, for the trivial redesign to use a more compact engine. They'd also like to point out that a great many previously accepted designs have used parts available from sources other than current Clan factories such as the chassis of the Star Adder's Hellfury (from Brian Caches) or the engines of the Steel Viper's Coral Snake (dependent in the short term on salvage from the Inner Sphere!)

I wouldn't expect any changes to the rankings made - trials of greivance not refusal - but it isn't consistent with previous decisions (and the Uighur could have tapped the same stocks)

Star Captain Vlad will be pleased to take field once more.

I hear ya drakensis, I did screw up on the Nobunaga fuel but it was between the Maori and Qashqai for the gold I just felt they were the best two designs.

In my view you can not rely on salvaged parts while engaged in full scale production. It was a clever way to qualify and test while awaiting development and for that I salute you. The other four designs that beat out the Timur used existing Clan made engines which eliminated any such concerns. However, other designs were just a better fit IMO.

If the Sharks and the Horses had combined their efforts with the Uighur and the Timur I think they would have been better off.

Still you do not always get what you want. I am hoping someone will try to enter this contest with a 340XL design. ;)

I don't dispute the outcome of the contest. I've no reason to believe that the decision would have been different in any significant way had my point been acknowledged.

However, since you've accepted the use of salvaged parts in other designs I remain convinced you're being inconsistent.

There's no point arguing over it however.

The Kubulai evidently won't be a contender since it doesn't meet your new standards but I see no reason to delete it either. Have fun.
