   The scheduled end of the Quicksilver Aerospace Trails left some Clans bitterly disappointed. Before any objection could be raised the ilKhan proposed that upon further analysis four supplemental Clan OmniFighters could indeed be considered. Burrock, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar insisting that the contest had been completed as originally outlined before the Grand Council declared an immediate Trail of Refusal over this continued waste of resources. Steel Viper was quick to agree citing the assurances given limiting development of OmniFighters to one for every available weight class (17).

   Indignant Khan Natasha Kerensky insisted that additional industrial capacity existed and asked if the Crusaders wished to stifle the Clan war effort. Khan Cassius N’Buta of the Star Adders rose and as a Crusader objected to the charge. If such spare manufacturing space did exist the ilKhan’s proposal to further supplement the Clan OmniFighter force had merit. This bought forth the Khans of Coyote, Fire Mandrill, Ice Hellion, and Nova Cat in rapid succession who each insisted they had such reserves. Both Cloud Cobra and Snow Raven backed these assertions offering to assist any further aerospace projects.

   Insisting that several intriguing concepts had not been fully explored the Goliath Scorpions backed the supplemental proposal. Eager to recover some investments and attracted by the further opportunities Diamond Shark also supported the initiative. Involved with its allies supplemental bid Blood Spirit enthusiastically embraced this renewed effort. Likewise Ghost Bear with their abundant resources backed their friend’s agenda. Hopes that this would push Hell's Horses to oppose further aerospace development soon disappeared when they too approved the ilKhan’s proposal.

   The final Grand Council vote was 26 for with only 8 against. True to their word the Crusaders did initiate a Trail of Refusal even though Steel Viper made clear they would not participate. While the Crusaders faced more than three to one odds thanks to the vote bidding reduced the defenders numerical advantage to just two to one. Three elite aerospace stars (30) from Burrock, Jade Falcon, and Smoke Jaguar squared off against two trinaries (60) from Cloud Cobra and Snow Raven in near orbit of Strana Mechty. The battle was fierce but ultimately the piloting expertise of Cobra/Raven force prevailed opening the way for four additional OmniFighter designs.

   Clan Fire Mandrill will be the first supplemental OmniFighter designer with the help of their Blood Spirit and Snow Raven allies. They are continuing to work on a Medium to Heavy weight fighter (50 to 100 tons) that uses a small standard engine which will operate like an aerospace zombie. There have been three examples thus far; the 65 ton Nobunaga by drakensis, the 85 ton Kubulai by drakensis, and the 95 ton Scipio by masterarminas. These three designs are already going to be reentered in this contest but I am looking for the very best possibilities. This cheap and highly reliable craft will augment the existing fleet. Since this is part of Quicksilver and prompt production is required use of existing components. Good luck!

Overview:
Kindraa Mick-Kreese were eager to build a new aerospace omnifighter... but since they didn't have the resources for a top-quality platform so they instead turned to adapting the Ghost Bear's relatively recent Jengiz into a cheaper but effective aircraft. With their own manufacturers already at full output, the Ghost Bears agreed to license the airframe to the Fire Mandrills, for a share of production they can use to bolster garrison clusters - something they expect to need much more of given their new Inner Sphere holdings.

The result is the Shemite, a heavy fighter with excellent speed and protection for its size but compromised slightly in terms of firepower in order to remain affordable for smaller Clans.

Capabilities:
The Shemite carries a larger engine (adapted from the reactor used in the Warhammer IIC) than the Jengiz and due to the older design it's almost four times as heavy. Fortunately the sturdy airframe can easily accomodate this. The fuel load is also increased by 25% and the expensive Ferro-Aluminium is replaced with cheaper composites, although with tonnage increased to make this overall an improvement in protection. This leaves thirty tons for payload - less than 40% of the fighter's tonnage.

The primary configuration of the Shemite is a matter of simplicity: wing-mounted PPCs for easy thresholding of targets protection and as a fall-back a nose mounted salvo of Streak SRMs, providing ample deterrent of straying into its forward arc.

The Shemite A reduces the wing mounts to ER Medium Lasers for short and medium-range engagements, but this is mostly to finish off targets that have already been hammered by the pair of Gauss Rifles in the nose.

Finally, for LRM bombardments, the Shemite B is equipped for short-duration salvos from the six launchers it carries. However it lacks any secondary armament, requiring an escort to cover its retreat once the five tons of missiles are expended.

Well, you using the 80-ton chassis has eliminated one of the four tonnages I had narrowed my choices down to. That still leaves me with three choices and I've got designs for two of them already, but no fluff

OK, here's my entry. I went for the lower end of the spectrum and settled on the fifty-ton Barca. The Barca is named for the family of famous Carthaginian generals. Pre-eminent among them was Hannibal. However Hannibal's father, Hamilcar, and his brother, Hasdrubal were skilled generals as well. Also, a yonger brother, Mago, was one of Hannibal's subordinate commanders during his invasion of Italy.

OVERVIEW:

As the Quicksilver Challenge drew to a close, IlKhan Kerensky issued a new directive that would exploit the remaining industrial capacity of the Clan Homeworlds. Several Clans still had excess production capacity and the Fire Mandrills were among the four Clans mentioned by the IlKhan. Khan Carrol was given the task of creating a fighter that fit in the medium or heavy weight range and be built with a standard fusion engine. This would prove a daunting task as the Fire Mandrills were not known for their aerospace engineering prowess and thusly would need a great amount of assistance. Khan Carrol had an ally at her disposal in the form ilChi Jas Keller from Clan Blood Spirit. Using his contact within Clan Snow Raven, ilChi Bri McFadden, Keller was able to get a team of engineers on loan from the Snow Ravens to hel design this new fighter. Both Clan Blood Spirit and Clan Fire Mandrill had recently acquired a small number of Turk OmniFighters as isorla in recent Trials with Clan Burrock. Damages to these aircraft, especially their expensive extralight fusion engines, had made them inoperable. Thes damaged airframes would form the basis for the new Barca Omnifighter.

The task would be to use as much locally produced materials as could be found on the Mandrill homeworld of Shadow. First came the powerplant, a standard 200 series fusion powerplant used in the Ares built by the Mattila-Carrol Kindraa. This powerplant would give the Barca a maximum thrust of 4.5gs, which would allow it to keep pace with the larger Jagatai or Sabutai. Next came the structural changes to the airframe. Madrill and Raven engineers decided that the lower, ventral wings and tailplane had to be removed as they inhibited lift and made ground landings difficult. A new larger delta wing would replace the Turk's odd X-wing shape. The forward winglets would also be removed as the leading edge of the new wing would start just aft of the cockpit. This new wing would provide both greater lift and improved atmospheric maneuverability. As this new platform would be slower than most other aircraft of its size, it was deemed necessary to install some form of countermeasure to increase the aircraft's chances of survival. Rather than mounting a weapons system, a member of the snow Raven design team suggested the mounting of an ECM suite in the tail cone to disrupt a pursuin enemy fighter's targeting systems. This was easily agreed upon as an ECM unit took up little weight and required no ammunition nor generated any extra heat.

Additional differences from the Turk include an extra ton of ferro aluminum armor added to the frame with an emphasis on protecting the nose of the aircraft. The number of fixed heats was dropped to the minimum number of ten, so that more weapons could be carried. The Barca has a total of twenty-tons of podspace. While this is not a large amount of space, it is a solid total given the limitations of mounting a standard fusion engine instead of a modern XL engine.

CONFIGURATIONS:

Prime Configuration: Per Khan Carrol's instructions, the Prime was made to resemble the now ancient Warhammer battlemech, the progenitior of the current Hellbringer. The main weapons are, of course, the extended range PPCs. One of each is mounted in the wings paired with an extended range medium laser. The nose features a twin-tube Streak SRM launcher mated with a pair of machineguns. The machineguns are controversial as no other known OmniFighter mounts them. Originally a pair of extended range small lasers shared the nose with the SRM launcher, but were removed to cut down on heat buildup. An additional five heatsinks are mounted to handle the heat burden from the PPCs.

Alternate Configuration A: Using weapons co-opted from the Mattil-Carrol vehicle program, this configuration weapons that can be found on the Zorya and Odin tanks. Mountedin the nose is the Class LB-X autocannon from Zorya and a pair of medium pulse laser pulled from the Odin. In the wing are are a pair of Artemis IV-equipped ten-tube LRM launchers, each with only one ton of ammunition. No additional heat sinks are mounted.

Alternate Configuration B: The B variant is a flying missile battery and features a pair of Artemis-IV equipped fifteen-tube LRM launchers, taken form the Ares tank, and a pair of twin-tubed Streak launchers pulled from the Odin/ all of these launchers are mounted in the wings with all of the supporting weapons mounted in the nose. A trio of medium lasers are mounted in the nose, two pulsers and one extencded range. An additional heat sink is mounted to handle the extra heat of any possible alpha strike.

Alternate Configuration C: For the final variant, the designers continued to stay within the Fire Mandrill supply lines and grafted a Class 10 LB-X autocannon to the nose of this aircraft. Fed by a three-ton ammunition bin, this Barca should be able to stay in the game for quite a while. Two extended range small lasers share the nose with the Guass rifle, while four medium pulser lasers are mounted in the wings. No additional heat sinks are mounted.

OVERVIEW:

The Saka, like the Barca, is based on an OmniFighter currently in use by the Clans. This time it is the Scytha that gives it life to this new design. The Saka meets the criteria setdown by the IlKhan for the Fire Mandrills to meet. The Saka project is headed by Star Captain Emilia Sainze, the lone bloodnamed aerospace pilot of the Sainze Bloodhouse. As hse has piloted a Scytha for nearly ten years, it was thought she could provide the greater insight to fashioning a new Omnifighter for the Clan. Give that a standard engine was the major requirement for the new Omnifighter, Star Captain Sainze instructed the scientists to make the Saka slower than its parent. To make this happen, the scientists stripped the powerplants from the two Highlander IICs in the Kindraa's touman and fitted them to two Scythas that were down for maintenance, including the Star Captain's own ride.

With the help of a pair of Snow Raven scientist from the Barca team, minor structural modifications were made to increase lift. The wing wing root were pulled forward on the aircraft given the Saka greater wing area. The canards were pushed forward to just behind and below the cockpit. The only other structural change is the addition of 4.5 tons of armor to the airframe, an increase of more than thirty percent. After limiting the number of heatsinks to the minimum of ten, a total of forty-nine tons of podspace is available to configure the Saka. The Sainze development team fully realized that a significant amount of this tonnage would go to heatsinks as many of the envisioned configuration concepts were to feature energy-based weapons.

CONFIGURATIONS:

PRIME CONFIGURATION: The Prime configuration features a plethora of weapons indigenous to the Fire Mandrill manufacturing infrastructure. Two extended range large lasers are mounted in the nose as a focuses long-ranged weapons fire. The wings feature the other main weapon, the Class 10 LB-X autocannon. Each LB-X is fed by a three-ton magazine with a mixture of solid shot and cluster ammunition. For added firepower, four medium pulse lasers are mounted one in each wing and tow in the aft firing station. a total of seventeen double heat sinks are carried.

ALTERNATE CONFIGURATION A: A flying missile battery, the A configuration is armed with a total of five Artemis IV-equipped fifteen tube LRM launchers, one in the nose and two in each wing. Each of these launchers has two tons of ammunition to expend on enemy targets. For added striking power, an extended range PPC is mounted in the nose along with a pair of medium pulse lasers. For added protection against enemy fighters, a pair of extended range medium lasers and an AMS system are mounted in the aft station. Like the Prime, seventeen double heatsinks are mounted.

ALTERNATE CONFIGURATION B: This model is the heavy hitter that features a pair of wing-mounted Gauss Rifles, each with three tons of ammunition to feed the pilot's combat needs. An extended range medium laser shares each wing with the Gauss Rifle. An extended range large laser and a pair of Artemis IV-equipped ten-tube LRM launchers are mounted in the nose. A total of three tons of expendables keeps the launchers well-fed. To further protect the fighter an ECM suite is mounted in the aft weapons station. Two additional heat sinks are mounted to help with heat issues.

ALTERNATE CONFIGURATION C: The final configuration features a pair of extended range PPCs in the nose as its main weapons. For additional long range fire support a pair of Class 5 LB-X autocannons are mounted in the wings. Sharing the wings are a pair each of medium pulse and extended range medium lasers. The aft weapons station is fitted with a pair of twin-tube of Streak SRM-2s sharing a ton of ammunition. A total of twenty double heatsinks are mounted to deal with the heat of the energy weapons.

==Overview:==

It took the combination of two different Kindraa to bring the Alaric into existence, Kindrass Kline and Faraday-Tanaga. Based on the venerable Visigoth, the team assembled by Kindraa Leaders Samantha Kline and Marc Faraday would make next to no changes to the structural nature of the Visigoth outside of adding an extra 1.5 tons of ferro-aluminum armor and replacing the 300XL powerplant with the Standard 180 fusion powerplant found in the Ku wheeled tank. Pulling all a total of four Visigoth out of the two Kindraa's toumans and acquiring the necessary was the simplest part of the process. With the added armor came a re-distribution of protection to the craft. While still favoring the nose area, it was thought best to give equal protection to the wings and the aft section of Alaric. As the new fighter is markedly slower than its predecessor, the addition of rear-firing weapon became imperative to the hopeful success of this design. an extended range medium laser is permanently mounted in the tail section.

With the changes made to the aircraft a total thirty-two tons of podspace is available for any possible configurations for the Alaric. Like the Barca and Saka, the Kline-Faraday-Tanaga team chose to use as many Fire Mandrill-produced weapon system as possible. Although, to keep the Alaric combat effective, a configuration or two would reach outside of the Mandrill supply lines.

==Configurations:==

Prime Configuration: Created using only products from Fire Mandrill factories, the Prime features a nose-mounted Class 10 LB-X autocannon complete with three tons of ammunition. sharing the nose section with the LB-X are a pair of extended range medium lasers. The wings are fitted with a mix of short-range support weapons. Each wing is fitted a medium pulse laser and a pair of twin-tube Streak SRM launchers. Each pair of launchers shares a one-ton ammunition bin. A total of fifteen heatsink attempts to keep this variant cool running.

Alternate Configuration A: On this configuration the all-powerful Gauss Rifle is mounted in the nose of the Alaric and is fed by a three-ton ammunition bunker. The wings are fitted with a pair of Artemis IV-equipped fifteen-tube LRM launchers with a total of four tons of ammunition to share between the two launchers. Two extended range medium lasers share the wings. Twelve double heatsinks are mounted.

Alternate Configuration B: This configuration is a dedicated ground support platform festooned with a variety extended range lasers. The nose features a pair of small and large lasers, while the wings each have one small and one large laser. A total of twenty-four double heatsinks attempt to keep this aircraft from overheating.

Alternate Configuration C: This configuration is a missile platform that features four ten-tube LRM launchers mounted in the wings. Each launcher is fitted with an Artemis IV fire control system and they share six tons of ammunition. Two medium pulse lasers are mounted in the nose, while two extended range medium lasers share the wings with the launchers. A total of sixteen double heatsinks are carried, which more than the aircraft truly needs out side of an alpha strike.

Alternate Configuration D: A last minute addition to the Alaric, this final configuration features a trio of large pulse lasers split between the nose and wings. A total of six twin-tube Streak SRM launchers, two in each of the forward firing locations. These six launchers share three tons of ammunition. A total of fifteen double heatsinks keep this variant from overheating too greatly.

Well our latest contest drew an additional four entries which when added to three previous submissions gave us a seven great proposals for the Fire Mandrills. With entries ranging from 50 to 95 tons I looked for the best overall concept, component availability, and potential performance. In short which was the most impressive Mandrill aerospace design that they could realistically build. Hopefully this will be the start of a new class Zombie OmniFighter project that could one day spread. Lets get to evaluating which was the best aersospace entry in my opinion.
7. Shemite (drakensis)
This 80 ton submission from Kindraa Mick-Kreese is simple and straight to the point. Based on the Jenghiz frame obtained from the Ghost Bears under license agreement this Zombie breaks all the rules. With a 320 Fusion Engine (6/9) from the Warhammer IIC which could be obtained from the Snow Ravens this Zombie is faster than its predecessor! Perhaps it is a little too fast as it would have been curious to see how a 240 Fusion Engine would have worked. The larger power plant leaves only 30 tons of pod space for weapons and equipment which is almost equivalent to a Medium OmniFighter. However, it is an interesting proposal as is with 19.5 tons of standard armor plating (312 factor) providing excellent protection. I would have liked to have seen a little more fluff cause their was a lot of potential here. Snow Raven seems to have driven this design with its Ghost Bear allies and Mick-Kreese is an aerospace Kindraa. Even though this design finished last it is an intriguing possibility.

6. Nobunaga (drakensis)
This 65 ton OmniFighter design finished third in the 23rd Quicksilver Contest bringing a great deal of controversy with the review which I get to do over on. Bought to us by Kindraa Beyl-Grant of the Fire Mandrill Clan it was named after the legendary Japanese Warlord. The name is a good choice as it reminded me of a two decade old video game which I really liked and it could appeal to Kindraa Sianze. Using a scaled down Hammerhead airframe was a cool idea only surpassed by the cached VOX 325 Engines (7/11) once meant for Exterminator replacement parts. It has five tons of fuel which is pretty standard for fighter range and 10.5 tons of ferro aluminum (201 factor) that provides good protection. Purchasing armor from the Jade Falcons is also an interesting angle. I still say the 20 tons of pod space is a little on the light side even though it might spark more Trails of Grievance. The configurations are not that shabby despite having to get close to use your weapons except the ER Large Lasers of Prime. This design deserves a lot of credit for starting the entire Zombie OmniFighter concept that got us to this point. Very nice!

5. Barca (Abele) 7.5
This 50 ton design presented as a unified Fire Mandrill effort at the direction of the Khan with the help of the Snow Raven and Blood Spirit ilChis is intriguing. On the low end tonnage wise in this contest the frames for this entry come from salvaged Turks obtained in recent trails versus the Burrock Clan. I will admit that is an intriguing choice given the hatred that the Spirits have for that Clan but a solid choice especially when the wing shape was altered to a delta wing. Even better was the 200 Fusion Engine (6/9) pulled from the Ares Tank used to power this design. Reliable and highly available it is an excellent choice. Add in its 10.5 tons of ferro-aluminum armor (201 factor) along with an integral ECM Suite quite a little Zombie on your hands. At first I was inclined to think your pod space would be a little too light but 22 tons is not all that bad. Plus basing your Primary Configuration on my favorite Mech of all time has got to help. Name wise I would have gone for a Barca series (individual fighters would have been Hannibal, etc.) and possibly embraced the Carathagian name (Dido) sake as my own. Not sure if that fits Fire Mandrill but canon Blood Spirit who are the rivals of Star Adder it sure would.

4. Saka (Abele)
The 90 ton entry forwarded by Star Captain Emilia Sainze is based on the Scytha frame. This Jade Falcon design released in 2968 brings up the interesting relationship between these two Clans. The Falcons applaud the Mandrills tenacity but deride their factionalism as unClanlike according to FM CC page 94. In the same book the Mandrills seem to think they can outlast the Falcons in regards to bondsman they took in the recent Harvest Trails. Given they are both Crusaders and the Falcon’s keen banking system I am sure some kind of deal could have been reached. However the Scytha maybe outside the Mandrill’s prize range not to mention some interesting structural changes that go along with this entry. With the 270 Fusion Engine (5/8) from the Highlander IIC also coming from an outside source (Diamond Shark) it seems this proposal could be beyond the Fire Mandrills means. I would have preferred something more Star League say the Ahab frame that could have used 270 Fusion Engines from the more available Shadow Hawk IIC which could get the Nova Cats involved. Design wise it is well armed with 49 tons of pod space and 18.5 tons of ferro-aluminum armor (355 factor) provide superb protection. Sorry Abele it was production concerns that got me here.

3. Scipio (masterarminas)
The 95 ton Scipio was a bronze medal finisher in the recent 25th Quicksilver Contest. It followed the efforts of Kindraa Sainze to build a low tech OmniFighter with excellent results. Using a 285 Fusion Engine (5/8) thanks to a partnership with Blood Spirit enabled the design to reach acceptable speeds. With this power plant soon reentering production with the new Kinslayer OmniMech the initial engines are obtained from the ancient Puma Assault Tank. With 17.5 tons of ferro aluminum (336 factor) and an integral ECM Suite it is well protected. Finally 45 tons of pod space creates a very effective aerospace fighter with effect configurations like Prime’s Pulse Lasers and the triple LB-20X Autocannons of Alternate B rounding out this cost friendly submission. The only two minor drawbacks for me are the name which still strikes me as more Star Adder than Fire Mandrill and continued opposition from the Cloud Cobras. Grabbing the Hydaspes aerospace frame is very Clan but with their Ravens already at war with the Cobras over new OmniFighter designs things could get pretty intense. That might not matter however as design wise this is very well done.

2. Alaric (Abele)
With a multiple hit parade on this 60 ton entry Abele was almost able to pull out the win. First of all naming this craft after the Visigoth’s most famous leader is a superbly done. Even though the Visigoth frame is a Jade Falcon design released in 2948 it is smaller and older meaning it could be a better deal for the Mandrills then the Scythia. Plus the 180 Fusion Engine (5/8) from the Ku Wheeled Vehicle is readily available and pretty reliable. The design drawback is that it would be slow for a Medium OmniFighter but it is well protected by 12 tons of ferro-aluminum armor (230 factor). With 32 tons of pod space and a dedicated rear ER Medium Laser mount it has more potential firepower than a Clan Medium Fighter. I think alternate configuration A is my favorite of the bunch. Unknowingly you hit on a planned Clarion Call development with this Kindraa Kline and Faraday-Tanaga team effort. Nice job, you nearly pulled it off but I did like one Fire Mandrill design better.

1. Kubulai (drakensis)
At 85 tons this fourth place finisher in the 24th Quicksilver Contest was one of the angriest presented to the ilKhan. Simple and effect are the two words that probably best describe this craft well named in honor of the Mongol grandson of Genghis Khan. Fire Mandrill and Hell’s Horses combined their efforts in the wake of past failures which they openly challenged. Using the venerable Rapier aeroframe from the Star League past in conjunction with a 255 Fusion Engine (5/8) works very well. While this power plant originally came from the Hell’s Horses Thunder Stallion it would also available from Blood Spirit by way of the Blood Kite. I am still amazed that this design can mount 52 tons of pod space which is very impressive given its low tech basis. Obviously this has tremendous offensive potential even though it has only 10 (20) Heat Sinks which would tend to favor cooler ballistic weaponry. Five tons of fuel gives it standard range for a fighter and 12 tons of standard armor (192 factor) is not all that bad. With the initial loss and Hell’s Horses eventual OmniFigher win the Mandrills are really free to develop this design. Blood Spirit and Snow Raven could be bought in for support which makes a great initial submission even better now. The Horses could even be compensated with a share of production if you wish. I like it!

Everyone did a great job with these entries and I would like to thank everyone for exploring this concept in greater detail. Generally the advantage went to the heavier designs but I think the concept (Standard Fusion Engine OmniFighter) is very sound which we might revisit one day. In this case many if not all of the designs showcased here just may see production after all. Awesome work everybody and now on to the next Supplemental OmniFighter.
