Give me speed, that’s what I need. Yeah! Welcome to the Ice Hellion aerospace challenge folks, guess what they will be focusing on? Because of the rapid maneuverability required for this contest the size of possible aerospace frames will be limited to the Light (20 tons to 40 tons) classification. This likely means XL Engines are probably a must but they are not required per say. I will say that only Level 2 Clan tech will be legal so no XXL Engines even though it might be ideal. It is very tempting I know but you will not win with Level 3.

Make it fast! There are two ways potential submissions can go. The first as master arminas quite correctly pointed out the Clans have not filled certain thrust categories. The initial Quicksilver Aerospace Trails did much to close those gaps but one remains. The 12/18 movement profile is important because of the threat posed by the Cheetah and Thrush. While these Marik and Liao designs have not yet met the Clans in large scale battle they remain faster than most OmniFighters. Thus far only the 25 ton Berber (Cloud Cobra) and the 30 ton Ghaniz (Snow Raven) both by drakensis have attempted to fit this flight envelope.

FASTER!! The second possibility is to make the fastest fighter (14/21 or better) in existence. The Vandal was a good example of this but can we do better? The 25 ton Vandal redux from the Clan OmniFighters: As They Should Have Been thread by master arminas is proof we can. It goes 14/21 but can we do even better than that? Well Ice Hellion is out to find out. Sadly there is no previous entry that truly qualifies for this contest so it is a wide open field here folks. You done yet?! HURRY!!!!

Overview:
The Falafel family, according to Ice Hellion historians, ruled one of Earth's deserts with one thing: speed. For this reason they chose the name for their new omnifighter design. Careful scientific studies led them to conclude that the best balance between speed and payload would come with a 35-ton airframe, which was readily available in the proven Avar.

The Ice Hellion Khans had some doubts about the accuracy of the history presented but gave the scientist team one last chance: ordering them back to Strana Mechty to win a Quicksilver Trial. Or as Khan Asa Taney put it: "No excuses, offspring of my slowest sibkin." Equipped with a fusion turbine that started out as a Redline fusion reactor from a Summoner, the resulting fighter isn't quite the fastest aerospace fighter around - but its faster than anything with more payload.

Capabilities:
The Falafel Prime is a close in duellist, built around closing in for deadly turning fights. The five medium pulse lasers make for deadly punch but only expert handling can keep the lightly protected Falafel alive in a close fight.

In Alpha configuration, the Falafel is a more conventional mix of missiles and extended range lasers, using LRMs to soften up a target before closing in with lasers. Against Inner Sphere pilots this may be successful although Clan aerospace may have anti-missile systems that limit its usefulness.

Finally the Falafel Beta pairs two ER Lasers to a targeting computer. A Streak SRM launcher and the medium lasers give good close and medium firepower but many pilots prefer to keep the range open and use the extraordinary reach of the large laser as the primary damage-dealer.

BELISARIUS



Overview

Named after the General of the Eastern Roman Empire who destroyed the Vandal kingdoms of North Africa, the Belisarius is a prototype light-weight OmniFighter recently fielded by Clan Ice Hellion. 

Designed and developed by Clan Scientists after Khan Tyler instructed them to 'build for us a fighter as fast as the Vandal, but with better endurance and pod-space, with all of the components manufactured by our Clan', the Belisarius manages to achieve those (rather vague) goals on a 25-ton frame.

The initial prototype caused the Hellion Khans and leadership to sit up and take notice.  Although the pod-space was only incrementally better than the older Vandal, the design did have two-thirds again as much fuel and was able to match the older design in acceleration and maneuverability.  Armor protection had to be lowered slightly, but the Hellions viewed this as 'inconsequential' as any light-weight Aerospace Fighter or OmniFighter relies primarily on not getting at in the first place in order to survive.

The design, having met all of the requirements of Khan Tyler, was then submitted to the ilKhan for competition in the Quicksilver Expansion Trials on Strana Mechty.

Capabilities

The Belisarius is built on a 25-ton frame modified from the SB-26 Sabre of the Star League Defense Force.  Renowned for its atmospheric maneuverability, this frame was easily adapted by Hellion scientists to accomodate limited Omni-pods in the nose and wings (but a tail bay was impossible to shoe-horn into the design).  Designated as the Hellion Sabre Light, the frame includes a five-ton fuel tank and a central bay for carried ordnance and/or additional fuel reserves.  Large enough to house a single Arrow IV Air-to-Ground attack munition, or 2.5 tons of fuel (a 50% increase from the onboard internal tankage), or five small-diameter bombs, this bay allows the Belisarius to serve as a light strike fighter in addition to its role as a reconnaissance unit and interceptor.

Power is provided by a Blizzard 300XL Engine borrowed from the existing Icestorm production lines.  Able to achieve a safe thrust of 7-g's, the powerful drive can reach 10.5-g's under emergency power.  The communications system is the reliable GBX Series Integrated taken from the Clan's Stormcrow line; likewise the HCFA 3047 1.5 Targeting & Tracking Array has been borrowed from the Hellion production complex.

Armor is provided by 3.5 tons of Compound Espsilon ferro-aluminum (a derivative of the existing Compound Gamma ferro-fibrous).  Although lighter than the armor protection of the Vandal, this amount is the same as that carried by the Bashkir; as such, the Khans found that it was adequete.

Pod-space was limited to four tons (33.3% greater than the Vandal) and the scientists decided against mounting any additional double-strength heat sinks beyound the core ten.

Configurations

Used primarily for reconnaissance, the Prime is outfitted with an Active Probe, two Extended Range Medium Lasers, and two ER Small Lasers . . . all contained within the nose bay.

Configuration A is a favorite of Hellion Pilots who have been lucky enough to test-fly the new design.  Armament consists of twin Medium Pulse Lasers mounted in the nose.

Configuration B has been designed as a close-combat specialist with eight ER Small Lasers.  Four are mounted in the nose, while the remainder are divided amongst the wings (two each).

Configuration C is another light-weight powerhouse with four ER Medium Lasers concentrated in the nose.

And finally, there is Configuration D.  Dubbed the 'Hellion Super-Seylidtz' by Khans Natasha Kerensky and Phelan Ward when they observed the first videos of this configuration, the Belisarius D carries just one gun:  a nose-mounted ER Large Laser.  Possessing good hitting power, the ability to threshold-critical hostile fighters up to four times the new design's mass, and a superb range, this weapon has caused the D Configuration to become extremely popular very quickly amongst Hellion (and Ebon Keshik) Pilots.

==Overview:==

When it came to this new aerospace project, the Clan Ice Hellion followed the same game plan as they did with their successful Quicksilver Omnimech. Using the same powerplant from the Summoner that powers the Quicksilver, they stuffed it into the airframe of the Avar Omnifighter. This simple move increased the top speed by better twenty percent. However, some concessions had to be made with the increase in engine size as podspace has been decreased by half down to a total of seven tons of podspace. Armor protection also suffered as two tons was pared off down to a mere five tons. Fuel capacity, however was increased to a more useful five tons to make much better use of the Gypsy's speed. No obvious physical changes were made, except for a slight widening of the fuselage where the new engines was mounted.


==Configurations:==

Configuration Prime: With only seven tons of podspace available it was decided to maximize that limited potential. The Prime is armed with an extended range PPC in the nose aided by a pair f extended range small lasers mounted in the wings. This gives the light fighter a very nasty bite in combat.

Alternate Configuration A: Another version featuring an all energy layout based on extended range lasers. A large and a medium laser are mounted in the nose while another pair mediums are mounted in the wings. This makes the Gypsy both an excellent dogfighter as well as ground support aircraft.

Alternate Configuration B: This variant steps away from the all energy layout and mounts a quad-tube Streak SRM launcher in the nose. A pair of medium pulse lasers are mounted in the wings to give this Gypsy additional punch in a dogfight.

Alternate Configuration C: Another version with missiles as the main armament with a pair of five-tube LRM launchers mounted in the nose along with a medium pulse laser. Each wing features an extended range medium laser.

Alternate Configuration D: The final configuration is a variant of the Prime that replaces the PPC with a large pulse laser. Instead of small lasers, an extended range medium laser shares the nose with the large pulser.

==Overview:==
     
Created using a barren Bashkir airframe combined with powerplant borrowed from a Clint IIC, the Lakota is more maneuverable than it parent while sporting increased podspace and fuel capacity, though armor protection suffered slightly. As there was only one conversion made, flight testing was limited to non-atmospheric operations for fear of a crash at high g loads. Podspace is limited to a meager four tons, which limits the aircraft, but not so much as it limits the Vandal, which the Lakota would likely replace. Final production would involve securing the Bashkir specs, which could be easily secured through a Trial of Possession. A source for the 240XL has multiple routes, including involving the Merchant caste.

==Configurations:==

The first three configuration all feature energy weapons all mounted in the nose. The Prime is armed with four extended range medium lasers while the A features a single extended large laser. The B model features a pair of medium pulse lasers.

The final two configurations are each fitted with a pair of nose mounted extended range medium lasers. The difference is the missile launchers that share the nose with lasers. The C model has a five-tube missle launcher with a ton of ammunition, while the D has a pair of twin-tube SRM launchers sharing a ton of ammunition.

Medium-weight Aerospace Fighters range from 50 to 70 tons.  Light-weight designs are 45-tons and below, whereas heavy-weight fighters are 75 tons+.

Since we are limited to 20-to-40 tons by the competition (and have a 12/18 or 14/21+ thrust requirement), light fighters it is!

Overview:
There's a point at which obsession becomes dangerous. When the Ice Hellions decided to try adapting the engine from a Hellbringer heavy omnimech to fit in the frame of a Charonea aerospace fighter they may have passed that point. They've certainly managed to strain their aerospace fighter pilots physically in controlling high-gravity manueuvres.

So naturally they're proposing to put the result into production as an omnifighter. Hellions!

Capabilities:

The Cyrus probably has the most severe acceleration profile of any known aerospace fighter. There really isn't much more to the design - it has the bare minimum of fuel, barely above that level of armour (although it's an improvement on the Chaeronea) and doesn't have enough payload to match its precursor's armament.

The armament carried in the three existing designs may be anaemic by Clan standards but it compares well to the Inner Sphere with the primary loadout being an extended range large laser.

The first alternative is to replace this with four extended range medium lasers, which significantly improves the firepower but cuts back the range available. The second downgrades the primary configuration's lasers to a medium laser but also carries ten machineguns. This isn't impressive in range or firepower. The only role that seems to fit the armament is strafing conventional infantry. No solahma, it seems, will be safe.

Another crazy imagining from the scientists working at Clan Ice Hellion's Red
Sector A engineering research center. Headed by Scientist Tigris, the mad
genius behind the XXL-equipped Blur OmniMech project. Learning from her
mistake she went with a more readily available powerplant. Her first notion
was to use the 390XL from the Linebacker Omnimech, but that left the
fighter with next no fuel, armor or weapons. Rather than re-do the
Vandal, she went down further in size and pulled the powerplant out of
a Stormcrow and dropped it into an old Spad fighter from the
mothball yard. Sje came up with a fighter that had the barest minimum of fuel
and an average amount of armor. The six tons of podspace was more than the
Vandal, though at a lower thrust profile. The armor protection was the
same as the Vandal, but the weapons podspace is triple that of the
Vandal.

==Configurations==

Prime: Fitted with a variety of sensors and ECM gear, the Prime is top line
scout platform. The TAG unit, ECM suite and the Active Probe are mounted in the nose.
For offensive firepower, an extended range medium laser and an extended range small
laser are mounted in each wing.

A: All of the weaponry is concentrated in the nose of the aircraft with an extended
range large laser and a pair of extended range medium lasers. An excellent dogfighter it
is also capable of providing ground support.

B: This variant has only one weapon, an extended range PPC, which gives this
variant excellent one-shot, one-kill capability.

C: The first of two missile armed variants, a pair of five-tube LRM launchers are
mounted in the nose and share one ton of ammunition. An extended range medium laser
shares the nose with the launchers. A total of four extended range small lasers are mount-
ed in the wings.

D: Nearly identical to the C model, the D replaces the LRM launchers with a pair of twin-
tube Streak SRM launchers. The laser battery remains the same.

Well the Aerospace Design Trinity was at it again this week presenting six designs for consideration for this Ice Hellion Supplement Challenge. While only five out of the six managed to qualify for consideration all were well done. I could not help myself so I added a design myself that pushes the boundaries of Clan technology. Of course that is qualified either just a thought experiment. Hope you enjoy and like what else you find in the review.

N/A. Iceni (Abele)
Unfortunately because of its speed profile (13/20) this design failed to qualify for this challenge. Sorry Abele this thrust rating already has the Bashkir occupying it but perhaps one day this may replace it. I liked the story of Scientist Tigris from the Blur OmniMech and how he took a 30 ton Spad frame dropped a Stormcrow 330XL Engine in to create this. Both are available for such experiments it just sucks it added up to 13/20. With 4.5 tons of ferro-aluminum (86 factor) it beats out the Bashkir by a full ton of armor. It also has a 4 ton fuel tank which is larger than the Bashkir’s 3 ton fuel tank. Finally 6 tons of pod space was more than the 4.5 tons offered by the Bashkir. Not bad Abele and you inspired me to create a little something myself.

N/A. Streak (Takiro)
While I was hoping to have somebody try out the 40 ton weight range with a Dasher II of the skies such an OmniFighter design is pretty impractical. Heck that BattleMech (TRO3085) only mounts 1.5 tons of weaponry (6 ER Micro Lasers) and that really is not roomy for pod space. But let us say that Scientist Tigris (borrowing your character Abele) gets a little nuts and obtains a 40 ton aerospace frame (your choice of Batu, Issus, Rogue, or even Sai) to play with. We put standard fuel tanks (5 tons) for adequate range and full armor (5.5 tons of ferro-aluminum) for ample protection (106 factor). Using a massive 400XL Engine (12/18) the prototype achieves fantastic speeds and impresses Khan Taney. However such a large power plant leaves us without any pod space but what if we take it up a notch? If Tigris could procure a 400XXL it would open up 9 tons of pod space and create one hell of a pursuit craft.

5. Falafel (drakensis)
The ridiculous name and the story behind this design were hilarious, no I have not had a chance to go back and watch Cannonball Run yet. Built with the 35 ton readily available Avar aerospace frame and the Redline 350XL Engine (12/18) from the Summoner you created quite a deadly fighter. With 10 tons of pod space this design mounts the most weaponry and equipment of any contestant. This makes for some good configurations including the 5 Medium Pulse Lasers of Prime. However to get this massive firepower you sacrificed fuel (3 tons) and armor with 4 tons of ferro aluminum (76 factor). This limits its range and brings into question its survivability. Still not bad and thanks for presenting a fun design entry.

4. Lakota (Abele)
Seems like this 20 ton design could be tied to Clan Snow Raven as both the 240XL Engine (14/21) from the Clint IIC and the Bashkir aeroframe were their products. When you add in the fact that the electrical components and armor plating are straight takes from the Bashkir this case gets even stronger. I could see the Ravens wanting to get in on the action here so a design alliance could have worked. Unfortunately the fluff is a little thin although what there is straight to the point. Basically a lot like the Vandal with the same speed and approximate tonnage left for pod space, fuel, along with armor albeit slightly rearranged. It has 4 tons of pod space, 3 tons of ferro aluminum (58 factor) [both slightly less than the Vandal] with 4 tons of fuel [a ton more than the Vandal]. This is quite a design feat as the 10 ton difference really strikes another blow against the bigger is better saying.

3. Cyrus (drakensis)
While the fluff is a little thin you presented a solid concept here drak. After all in a contest for speed you want to have the fastest design, aff? This 25 ton design based on the Chaeronea frame uses a 325XL Engine (15/23) to create the fastest OmniFighter ever made. Now where could the Hellions have gotten that stuff from? The Hell’s Horses and Diamond Sharks have access to the 325XL Engine from their Hellbringer and Qashqai lines but one Clan is more ideally positioned. Smoke Jaguar owns the Chaeronea frame from the Mongoose Absorption and makes the 325XL Engine for the Ebon Jaguar (Cauldron-Born). Such a pairing between these Crusader Clans is indeed possible and intriguing unfortunately the fluff does not address this. With 3 tons of ferro aluminum armor (57 factor) and 3 tons of fuel this flash in the sky can barely muster 4 tons of pod space. Basically it is a lot like the 30 ton Vandal just faster and switching armor for weapons. Still not too shabby and it is the fastest!

2. Belisarius (masterarminas)
Well somebody really likes the Sabre and it does make for a good looking 25 ton aeroframe I have to admit. The 300XL Engine (14/21) from the Icestorm production line allows you to match the performance of the Vandal. A 5 ton fuel tank gives it better range than the Vandal which had only 3 tons available. This leaves the exact same tonnage available for armor for firepower which you flipped on this design. With 4 tons of pod space, which is a ton more than the Vandal, you can mount more weaponry. This makes for some nice configurations especially D which how can anything get away from this fighter? It combines reach and speed to create a terrifying little opponent. The Vandal only has a ton more armor then the Belisarius which mounts 3.5 tons of ferro aluminum (67 factor). The fluff is solid and naming it after the General who defeated the Vandals was brilliant.

1. Gypsy (Abele)
This 35 ton project is a major hit with me because it does a lot of things right. First off it draws on Ice Hellion’s new Quicksilver OmniMech for its power plant, the 350XL Engine (12/18). This proven energy core from the Summoner when combined with the Avar airframe makes for the perfect mix. Plus the venerable Avar, originally a Wolf design, was made available during the Quicksilver Program and was picked up by the Snow Ravens. You could include them if you wish although with your two major components already available you score big points. While the pod space was reduced by half from the Avar (only 7 tons here) you created some solid configurations with Prime and Alternate A being my favorites. Armor also drops by two tons (7 tons of ferro aluminum for a 96 factor) but the fuel tank is slightly increased (5 tons) giving it better range. With better range and a few all energy armaments this craft can stay in the field along time. Plus I love the name is awesome too. Great job!

I went back and forth between the Belisarius and the Gypsy several times. It was a tough decision. The idea of exceeding and one day replacing the Vandal does remain so one day you very well might see the Clans deploy the Belisarius or even a refined Cyrus. I figure the Streak could be a high end test bed fighter for research and development. Thanks again everyone. Just two more aerospace contests remain.
