Overview:
With one of the largest navies in human space, the Taurian Concordat deploys thousands of aerospace fighters. The most common is the S-1 Starfire. Designed to fulfill a variety of roles, including that of a carrier fighter, high speed interceptor and raider, the Starfire is a popular design with Taurian pilots. First introduced in the early part of the 26th Century, the design remained in production through the end of the Reunification War.
Capabilities:
The Starfire is a compact fighter that is designed for speed. One of the fast known fighters, the design sacrifices armor and weapons to carry the massive Magna 300 engine. Dedicating almost two thirds of its mass to the engine, the Starfire only carries 3 tons of armor and a pair of medium lasers. Outgunned by most other designs, the pilots of the Starfire use their superior maneuvering to evade enemy fire. Many SLDF pilots were surprised when the Starfire they were chasing suddenly ended up behind them during a dogfight.
One of the outstanding features of the Starfire is its compact design and easy serviceability. The Jamestown Aerospace design team spent a large amount of time on the basic design of the Starfire. The aeroframe is very compact, which makes the Starfire a smaller target, as well as making it easier to handle in the tight confines of a carrier. The design also has numerous access panels and diagnostic systems. Most faults and damage can be diagnosed in a few minutes and repairs typically take half the time the take on other designs. Even a complete engine replacement can be completed in less then an hour. The ease of repair has an added benefit of requiring fewer support personnel per plane, further improving performance when deployed on carriers, which usually lack large technical crews.
Deployment:
The Starfire was commonly deployed by the TDF prior to the Reunification War. Despite the limited weaponry and armor, the Starfire was able to hold it’s own against the SLDF fighters. As the war progressed some of the Starfires were used as fireships. Equipped with bombs and explosives, the pilots would crash their planes into enemy warships The Jamestown factories on Horsham, Maia and Pinard were destroyed during the fighting, while the factory on Jamestown was severely damaged. When the Jamestown factory was rebuilt it was converted to produce Hellcat fighters. Only a small number of Starfires continue to serve in the TDF and their numbers are slowly declining due to attrition.
