Title: Sorry i've been away folks!
Post by: marauder648 on January 25, 2020, 01:18:57 PM
It's been super busy at work over christmas and then into the new year with various patches and launches (I work for a computer gaming company doing customer support) but I'm still alive! Still here!

And I need ya thoughts, ya comments and advice! For the next project is under way.

We're calling this one, Project NELSON and a friend and I got to thinking about both the SLDF (and expanding upon it which he's doing a fluff book with the stats to back it up) and then we got talking about the Snow Ravens.

Much like how the Horses, we're told, are the 'tank clan' but then have zilch to back it up, the Raven's are the aerospace and warship Clan, apparently. With nothing to show for it including no refits of WarShips to make them survivable, no DropShips to call their own, no fighters. Nothing. So that got us thinking. What if...

The Project starts with the Ravens focusing on their main strength, upgrading and updating their WarShips to be more survivable in the environment they face themselves, and there will be 6 WarShips added, all from SLDF stocks, and all but one being in Raven service. The other, a precursor to the Kimagure will be in Hellion colours.

We're also planning a run of 5 second line units that were designed with help from the Bears as well as 10 OmniFighters, some of which are just going to be updates of cannonical designs which the Ravens see as having reached the end of their development lives and others will be new. There's also gonna be DropShips and probably some small craft.

And as a little teaser.

Mashona Light OmniFighter

The Bashkir’s popularity within the Snow Raven’s touman meant that a successor had to be designed and instead of designing a completely new craft, the Scientists overhauled the Bashkir to produce the tiny Mashona OmniFighter. Because of its larger fuel tank, the Mashona’s fuselage is broader than the Bashkir and the 220 XL fusion engine now vents from a pair of exhausts rather than the single large thrust nozzle of the Bashkir. This and other changes to the wings and control surfaces make the Mashona visually quite distinctive from its older stablemate.
These changes did eliminate some of the flaws with the Bashkir including the excessive wear on the fighter’s frame around the ‘neck’ where the cockpit section met the wing spar. Unfortunately, these changes significantly altered the fighters centre of gravity and this in turn badly affected the prototypes handling in an atmosphere.  This lead to several more re-designs as well as the introduction of folding canards on the nose and the relocation of the larger fuel tank and other internal changes.

The weapons configurations were also extensively tested so that their weight wouldn’t affect the COG in combat and this did delay the introduction of the fighter into service, making it one of the last of Project NELSON to come into service with Clan Snow Raven despite it being seen as the easiest to build.

Although the 4-ton fuel tank was smaller than was liked, the Scientists simply couldn’t fit a larger tank into the fighter without compromising on its payload, making it less well armed than the craft it was to replace. To extend the fighters range they commonly carried a pair of conformal fuel tanks under their wings, these would be used during the initial take off and climb stage of a flight. Any remaining fuel would be used at cruising speed before the tanks were emptied and ditched. Still possessing the same blistering speed and agility of the Bashkir the Mashona’s greater endurance made it more suitable for WarShip deployment rather than acting as a ground based short-range interceptor.

To increase their endurance, most configurations of the Mashona feature energy weapons, and despite its small size the fighters firepower make it a dangerous interceptor and fast attack craft.
The Prime configuration removes the Bashkir’s Streak SRM-2 and replaces the weapon and its ammunition with a Medium pulse laser whilst retaining the wing mounted ER Medium lasers. The Alfa configuration is designed as a ground attack craft, carrying a single ER Medium laser and two SRM-4’s fed by a single ton of ammunition. The near identical Bravo replaces the SRM-4’s with a pair of LRM-5’s although in both configurations their limited ammunition storage is a major limiting factor.
The Charlie configuration is a bit of an oddity, instead of  many smaller weapons, it features a single ER large laser, giving the agile Mashona a potent long range punch which can shear through the armour of far larger craft. The Delta configuration is armed with a blistering array of eight ER Small lasers, four mounted in the nose and two in each wing. The Delta is capable of dangerous strafing runs and as there’s very few fighters that can outrun or out turn the D, it can cripple larger craft with laser fire into their rear arc in moments.

The Mashona was widely exported in various trade agreements with other Clans, making it quite popular outside of Snow Raven service with the largest users being the Cloud Cobra’s and Steel Vipers closely followed by the Ghost Bears. It became even more common when Clan Diamond Shark won the right to produce the fighter in the build up to REVIVAL and they then started trading the design to any who would take it, much to the anger of the Snow Ravens.

Afridi heavy OmniFighter

One of Clan Snow Raven’s more frustrating admissions was that they never got the production rights to the popular and successful Visigoth OmniFighter with the Falcons only making them available through trade. But with Project NELSON underway the Scientists of Clan Snow Raven decided that imitation was the sincerest form of flattery and based a heavy fighter on the aging Visigoth to match its performance and carry a similar payload. Whilst shaping it to match the Clan’s views on aerospace combat.

Massing 60-tons and powered by an XL 300 rated fusion engine the NAME had impressive performance for a craft its size and significant changes to the crafts aerodynamic frame made it more stable at all altitudes but these changes did make the fighter have a higher landing speed which pilots had to get use to.
Protected by 10.5-tons of Ferro-Aluminium armour and carrying a 5-ton fuel tank the NAME could take significant damage and had a longer mission duration than many other fighters like the Wolves Jagatai or the Jaguar’s fearsome but also very short ranged Sabutai.

Capable of carrying up to 32-tons of weapons and cooling systems the NAME didn’t waste any tons on fixed heat sinks unlike the Visigoth. This did slow down reconfiguring the fighter somewhat and would require a full hangar facility to upgrade the cooling systems it did make the fighter more flexible. Conceived as a heavy interceptor and fast strike craft the NAME has a potent combination of speed, firepower and protection. Although outgunned by the Jagatai or Sabutai, it has better protection than the larger craft despite massing ten to fifteen tons lighter.

First deployed en-mass aboard the CSR Bloodied Blade  the Nightlord class Battle-carrier helped defend the Raven’s holdings in the now vital system of RDB/0411 which had been passed up during the attack on the Tanite worlds by the Clans. The battleship and her fighter group were not challenged by the other Clans as the Snow Raven’s and Ghost Bear’s split the system and its easily accessible resources between them.

Although there were five common configurations, the flexibility of the NAME’s loadout meant that Warriors could and often did tinker with them and many higher ranking Warriors had their own preferred loadouts.

The Prime configuration was designed to operate and long to medium range, a pair of ER Large lasers being its main weapons during the closing stage of an engagement. As the range dropped a LB-10 autocannon and then Streak SRM-4’s could be brought to bare whilst a single ER Medium laser covered the fighter’s tail. The Alfa features a trio of Artemis augmented LRM-15’s whilst eight tons of ammunition ensure the missile launchers do not run dry. A trio of ER Medium lasers and a pair of small lasers provide additional protection whilst a single ER small laser provides somewhat anaemic protection to the craft’s rear quarters. But NAME pilots are trained to use their fighters speed and maneuverability to avoid fighters tailing them and their firepower is usually enough to decide a fight before they can be tailed.

Bravo configuration only carries four weapons, but two of those are Gauss rifles, each fed by 3-tons of ammunition. Two nose mounted ER medium lasers provide additional firepower but the fighter has no rear facing weapons and its pilots must rely on its gauss rifles to cripple or destroy an opponent as quickly as possible. Charlie configuration is designed for the ground attack role and can deliver murderous fire with its trio of large pulse lasers followed up by a pair of Streak SRM-6 launchers. Like the Bravo it features no rear firing weapons but its firepower lets it quickly win an engagement.
Delta configuration operates largely as a heavy interceptor and has murderous firepower at short to medium range. A single ER large laser lets it joust with targets as it closes but it is at short range where the fighter comes into its own. Six medium pulse lasers, two Streak SRM-4 launchers and a complex targeting computer make the D configuration lethal once it is in range. Although its guns don’t have the heaviest punch, its weight of firepower and the weapons accuracy is more than enough to cut through other craft in short order.

Titan II Carrier DropShip

The Titan class DropShip was the most common Carrier DropShip in SLDF service and many had been taken by the SLDF into EXODUS and many had survived the Pentagon Civil Wars to enter service with the Clans. Although the craft’s flight deck was enlarged to take three Star’s of fighters (30 craft) very little had changed otherwise, the ships in most cases still mounted their old weapons and armour which in many cases was becoming increasingly patched and ragged.
With many Titan class ships sitting in their naval Caches and Project NELSON in full swing the Raven’s were turning their eyes from their WarShips that were now filling the slips around Lum and were looking at fighters and smaller craft.
Structural investigations and safety checks took months as the Titan fleet was investigated and the cached ships hauled out of mothballs for checks. The oldest craft were offered for trade to the other Clans and the ships in the best condition would replace those in the worst which were then scrapped or traded off.

With their old weapons and huge engines the Titan’s were a curiously unbalanced design. Doctrine said that carriers would remain at the back, protected by their brood of fighters. But the Titan’s high speed and short ranged weapons made it barely passable as an assault DropShip. The redesign of the ship to more modern standards would see the Titan be significantly overhauled. First the older engines were replaced with smaller and lighter RMBK-5509 Fusion reactors, these reduced the speed of the ship to levels similar to a Union-C class DropShip. This freed up a considerable amount of weight and internal volume.
The old hangars were repositioned and instead of having their own cargo bays the cargo bays were extended and combined into a single central hub which serviced all three hangars. With the weight freed up from the engineering spaces, the Titan II would carry 1,395 tons of cargo compared to the 1,186 it previously could. A fourth, much smaller hangar was also installed, allowing a single Small Craft to land. This would reduce the ships dependency on orbital platforms or WarShips to bring cargo or crew aboard although it was mainly used to transfer personnel as the Titan couldn’t enter an atmosphere.  The interior layout was also changed and, by Clan standards the crew quarters were spacious although Inner Sphere crews would consider the ships spartan and basic.

The original 78 tons of hull plating was replaced with 66 tons of Ferro-Aluminium which offered considerably better protection and saved weight. The ship’s armament was also considerably overhauled. Gone was the old short ranged heavy calibre autocannons and large lasers of SLDF vintage. In their place a modern combination of ER and large pulse lasers as well as LRM’s for long range firepower. A trio of gauss rifles in the nose giving the ship its main punch. At shorter ranges medium pulse lasers in well sighted turrets covered all approaches and finally a heavy battery of anti-missile turrets protected the Titan II against fighter and capital scale missiles.

With resources flowing in from BRD-04/C and the growing asteroid mining the materials were available for the upgrades, the biggest problem was time. With Project NELSON, the Snow Ravens were carefully taking select ships out of commission to be upgraded, so not to overly weaken their Naval Stars. This took careful planning and required near round the clock work on ships being refitted and overhauled. Such a busy schedule limited the number of work crews that could refit the Titan into the Titan II standard.

Despite these delays the Titan II started to become more common by DATE and was a regular sight in Snow Raven space. The ships longer endurance and greater armament made it an ideal patrol craft and most Jump Points were protected by at least one Titan II. Other Clans would copy the refit, with the Cloud Cobra’s and Star Adders fielding the most outside of the Raven’s.

Welcome back.

The main problem with WarShips and Clans is that they can't afford to destroy them as they are too few of them, using them as orbital support goes against the rules and using them as super DropShips transporters is also a waste.
Plus they must know through Wolf's Dragoons that there are no Navy left in the Inner Sphere.
...
...
...
So of what use would this Navy be (I mean WarShips, not Fighters and DropShips)?

Its sort of the Raven 'thing' but the main focus is going to be on the 10 ASF we'll be adding and other bits, its not going to be as big as Zhukov, and the 6 WarShips are going to be almost unique ships that were found in caches. THe upgrades for the ships are because the Mongoose absorption showed that WarShips are vulnerable and the Raven's, who've built their whole strength around their naval fleet being a deterrent can't risk their main defence  becoming too weak.

Knowledge that no warships in Inner Sphere wasn't almost 3010 if this revisionist look at Ravens is the buildup prior to the Wolf's I could see a new design or large scale stripping of a design like the Riga to York conversions

Well my Quicksilver Naval Effort will be in response to the InnerSphere fighter advantage as shown most impressively at Radstadt and the death of ilKhan Leo Showers as well as their efforts to find the Clan Homeworlds or rather the Clan fear that they might find their Homeworlds. These factors will serve as powerful motivators to upgrade and expand the Clan Fleet which of course the Ravens will want to stay one step ahead of. Naturally they will wish to match or maintain their two to one ship advantage over other Clans which means a fleet of 50 ships if possible. With the powerful Smoke Jaguars and Jade Falcons pushing them they are going to have to overcome their resource poor situation in order to meet these goals. Luckily their expertise is invaluable to the rest of the Clans who will rely heavily on their infrastructure in order to meet this effort.

Fighters I always give the edge to Cloud Cobra as they are the aerospace Clan to me with the Ravens being the Naval Clan. Small distinction, yes but an important one.

Indeed, this is before the 3010 when it starts, it slowly starts in the aftermath of the Mongoose absorption and then the Diamond Shark incident where the Ravens withdrew following the shameful acts of their Khan and focused inwards.

Well a few things only touched on by canon....

1. Howell Bloodname to the Smoke Jaguars. Presumably before the disgrace of the Khan I shant name the Howell bloodname was likely an exclusive Raven one but in the aftermath of the Diamond Shark Disgrace the Jaguars must have gotten access to it in a big way as it becomes more and more associated with them. This is just a presumption of mine but accounts for the transfer of the name from one Clan to another. It is a major bloodhouse with notable warriors appearing in both Clans significantly throughout but almost no word how the Ravens let this happen. Sure the Jags could have just taken it before or after as the Ravens are a weak Clan compared to them but that is a poor reason in my opinion. The Ravens if aggrieved could have made the Jags existence a living hell but didn't so I think the let the name go rather than deal with its disgrace.

2. Blood Spirit Deal. The trade of warships to the Ravens from the Blood Spirits in exchange for ground forces specifically Mechs is outlined in canon but not specifically and could have many other effects on both Clans. Manpower is the one thing the Spirits often have much of and this could help the Ravens again here.

3. Mothballed Fleet. We know the Clans haven't activated all their navy because presumably it would drain them of finite resources and perhaps they lack the manpower to utilize them. I contend the invasion sees second line force often called provisional and I contend seldom used before utilized extensively on a full time basis. There is also some basis to cite warship activation during this time which cuts into the Ravens fleet superiority.

So interesting Idea and don't know if it would be useful or not. But if you ever played the Mechwarrior RPG (books not videogames) the 2nd edition had a odd factor in character creation that you could be a 0 human or a 1 human (see attached image).

What if 1 became a Naval archetype say instead of the -1 Body +2 Reflexes +1 Intuition its -1 Body +1 Reflexes +1 Intuition.

It fits the feel of the system and gives another aspect to the Clan.

So before I go crazy with ideas, which I have a couple already, do you have the framework already for the designs or are you looking for suggestions for some. I have 3 already Aerospace ideas, I small craft and one warship. I've always wanted a redo on the Ravens like this.

But still, with no need to build more WarShips or to upgrade them (ie no real stellar fights), why waste precious resources?
Unless you coordinate something at the ilKhan's level like reserves for the return to the Inner Sphere.

There's evidence the Clans did fight against each other with Warships. It was rare but it did happen. They even built a few Carrack (2950), Fredasa (2962), York (2947). Peregrine (???)  think more during Golden Century we don't have stats for. Plus we know they revised many designs either with LF batteries and/or HarJel.

I don't think if they built a new design it would be large at most probably Destroyer and only a handful unless selling to another clan. But I could see the stripping of something like the Aegis and rebuilding on its structure like the Kimgure to the Conqueror. Aegis is older than dirt, spare parts and wear and tear have got to have them in desperate state for an huge overhaul.

Nizari

A VIP Transport / Reconnaissance design the Nizari is a unique concept amongst the Clans. Like the ancient Native American myths and legends that state the Raven is considered the keeper of secrets and can help us expose the truth behind secrets and guide us along our path, the Nizari fulfills this role for the Clan. Designed as a noncombatant the Nizari is not often piloted by Snow Raven warriors but instead for by those of the Technician Caste. Conceptualized as a means to seek and discover members of the Bandit Caste the design harkens back to SLDF times when Military Intelligence was more an integral part of command decisions.

Utilizing the best of technologies available to the Clan the Nizari is able to transport small to intermediate groups of up to a platoon size (28) most models are outfitted for smaller sizes with comforts included for extended flights in systems. ECM and advanced sensors are available on all models. With the ability to deploy small drones for the purposes of creating sensor nets for stations and ship deployments. At least one of each design is located on all Snow Raven warships for senior level transport and scouting purposes. The single Bug-eye under control of the Ravens is paired with two of the design as a monitoring system for the Lum system.

Seen by some as a less than honorable design by a few of the more staunchly conservative Clans, the Ravens have defended in several trials the honor of the design most recently vs Clan Burrock. Who lost quite easily to the smaller but better trained Snow Raven binary component of the 11th Raven Battle Cluster.

Ahab C

Securing a recently unknown Brian Cache on Circe in former Clan Mongoose territories, Snow Raven has found a relatively intact mothballed supply of Royal SLDF Aerospace fighters. Stripping the designs of outdated and inoperable systems is taking some time but in the end the Clan will be able to add many additional aerospace fighters to their touman.  One of the more numerous designs in the cache was the AHB-443b Ahab, the moose in molasses as it was referred to in heyday has not been improved in its main drawback of speed and maneuverability. The Snow Raven commanders felt the increase from the traditional 270 engine to the more massive and resource heavy 360 engine just was not worth the investment. Instead 270 XL engines from the new Incubus design coming from the Hell's Horses have been installed into the design freeing up additional tonnage.

Stripping out any and all weapons and equipment on the design for the more efficient Clan technologies, already known for being able to take out combatant dropships in groups designers pushed the envelope in its arsenal in an effort to improve upon this. Maintaining the LRM systems but instead downgrading from the old 20's with supplementing NARC systems to 15's with Artemis Fire Support.  Removing the single ER Large and accompanying medium lasers and instead adding four ER Mediums, 2 per wing and one for enemies that engage it from the rear. Dropping the SRM's with their crit finding ability on enemy fighters and instead utilizing the tonnage from the new XL engine for three LBX-10s located in the Nose with an impressive 20 shots per cannon.

Spad IIC

Considered one of the best aerospace fighters fielded by the Star League Defense Force. With its impressive features being its durability and ease of maintenance, built such that it is possible to reach, repair and replace every component with a minimum of down time; even its engine could be replaced in six hours, compared to the average time of ten and a half in other fighters. Unlike non-omnifighters, the layout of the interior allows for quick replacement of any damaged or destroyed component with similar components, no matter the manufacturer. Much like the role played by the Mercury in the development of the OmniMech, the popular semi-modular Spad served as the basis for what would the OmniFighter. For this reason it was an ideal design to be brought back by Ravens. Cheap yet durable with enough maneuverability for most engagements the Spad was a perfect choice to bolster PGC and Naval defense squadron numbers. Raven engineers attempted to increase the engine for an XL variant but the inherent ease of maintenance and replacement with the original 150 engine was lost when they attempted to use large sizes ultimately leaving the original design. Weapons as well were simply upgraded with the Clan equivalents only the small laser was upgraded to its larger medium series. Keeping the primitive stealth technology features of the design that still are able to fool certain targeting systems a Clan ECM has been installed to bring the stealth tech up to modern standards.

Talon Assault Craft

The Talon fits a need for hostile boarding actions. With the potential for engaging hostile warships and dropships in the coming future the Ravens have begun to bolster their marine forces for seizing potentially new isorla from forces in the Inner Sphere. With information not available on potential targets the design is built with the idea of overwhelming numbers as the ideal. Holding up to 140 marines the idea is that one or two Talons can overwhelm any defenders an allowing the securing of targets. Moderate weaponry is added to keep enemy fighters honest but in the end aerospace superiority should be acquired before the Talon is deployed.

Been so long since designed a Warship. Got to work on fluff for it still but have an idea for it. This is stripping down Aegis and rebuilding off the frame. As the largest amount for any Warship that I can think of an Raven's having 7 of them themselves thought it would be a good resource maker for them refurbishing their own and other Clans for a cost.

These are some really nice designs and concepts :) The Nizari of course never existed, much like how the Ravens would never ever reactivate their Bug Eye class ship...*coughs*

Googling Ravens and symbolism especially amongst Native Americans got me thinking of the idea. I was thinking of fluffing it as hidden design masquerading as a combatant role but didn't think fit with clan ideals instead the clan openly uses it and the few Clans that would oppose such a thing either ignore it or challenge it like the Burrocks, for obviously alternative reasons. I had an omni idea but I liked the ones you already have. Only other IIC idea I had was Ironside one of my favorites of TRO 2750 or Zero, I like the fluff of the dive bombing tactics just not a fan of its weapons.

Or get around it by saying its a Watch bit of kit and then basically the other clans wouldn't care if they did find out about it.

Perhaps in its history its the craft that dropped the first Diamond sharks into the seas for them to prey on the Sea Fox.

Nice idea was rereading the story about Diamond Shark origins and didn't think of that. As for Watch I didn't think was around yet but its predecessor Intelser is founded around this timeframe of 2980. I found on Sarna was mishmash and very inept at its job. Something to consider if wanting to address in your universe

Updated Nizari fluff

Nizari

With Intelser being formed in 2980 by order of the Grand Council as a means of gathering intelligence on the state of the Inner Sphere, Snow Raven leadership immediately began brainstorming on how they would focus their Clan’s resources in the endeavor.

Debuting in 2982 the Nizari began to be produced in moderate numbers by the Clan. Slowly being spread amongst Clan holdings and commands. Conceptualized as a means to seek and discover Bandit Caste locations as well as scout for leading elements of any forces returning to the Inner Sphere. The design harkens back to a SLDF design when Military Intelligence was more an integral part of strategic command. Melding the ancient Raven of Ancient Terra lore into the design that held the Raven to be the keeper of secrets and assisted with exposing truths behind secrets, the Nizari fulfills this role for the Clan. Designed as a noncombatant the Nizari is not piloted often by Snow Raven warriors but instead by those of the Technician Caste.

Utilizing the best of technologies available to the Clan the Nizari is able to transport a small group of up to a platoon size (28), most models are outfitted for smaller sizes with comforts included for extended flights in systems.

The first notable action of a Nizari was in 2984 in the infamous Liam Howell / Clan Sea Fox fiasco. Piloted by Khan Howell himself the Nizari ship Fidai delivered the first Diamond Shark into the waters of Strana Mechty.

Post by: marauder648 on February 12, 2020, 04:02:54 PM
Space for hundreds of kilometres around the CSJ Obsidian was lit with fire, streaks of laser light, the bright flares of fighter exhausts and explosions. The aerospace fighters of Clan Mongoose and Clan Smoke Jaguar were but gnats between the duelling behemoths as nearly forty WarShips from small corvettes to 1.6 million ton monsters like the Obsidian tore into each other.

The Obsidian was streaming debris from several holes in her hull, one of her great turrets was a mangled wreck but the ship was still firing, her massive Naval PPC’s bellowing in silent rage in the cold dark of space. In the distance a Mongoose cruiser, a Kimagure class, easily identifiable thanks to their unique hull shape slowly exploded and came apart, the long, elegant bow literally cut from the hull.
Another ship thundered into view, explosions dancing across her hull as Jaguar fighters swept in, weapons blazing. The CMS Quicksilver Mongoose was damaged, but she was faring better than the larger Obsidian as small turrets tracked and engaged darting fighters, cutting down several with rapid pulses of fire as the Mongoose’s flagship charged the flagship of Clan Smoke Jaguar.

The damaged Jaguar battleship was starting to come about, rolling to try and present as much undamaged hull plating to the Quicksilver Mongoose but the damaged Jaguar ship was slow to answer the helm and the guns of the Quicksilver Mongoose spoke.

Bright blue particle cannon bolts hammered into the upper hull of the Jaguar battleship, followed a heartbeat by searing crimson beams as Naval lasers fired, melting and cutting into the upper hull of the CSJ Obsidian. It seemed the larger vessel had survived the brutal damage, but then something erupted in the hull. Blast pattern analysis indicated that it was ammunition for the ultra-heavy autocannons detonating. There was a brief but violent blast of flame followed by a shower of fragments of hull plating, some as big as a 100-ton aerospace fighter were torn out of the upper hull by the blast. The damage was bad, but what followed was far worse as the structural damage deep in the hull was obviously quite significant, and the ship was still rolling. The huge dorsal fin that towered over a hundred meters above the ship’s spine swayed as the Obsidian’s retro-thrusters fired to stop her roll. Swayed, and then started tearing free, ripping a huge chunk of the upper hull with it, air, debris and more than a few bodies hurtled from the growing wound on the dying battleships upper hull as she started tearing herself apart.

The holo-display flicked off as the Obsidian’s running lights flickered and died and Khan Ewan McCorkell turned his seat back to the other personnel in the crowded briefing chamber aboard the CSR James McKenna.

“As we know, the Mongoose’s destruction of the Obsidian did not save them, and that Clan has fallen and is now Absorbed into Clan Smoke Jaguar, the battle over Circe is the largest naval engagement ever seen in the Homeworlds. Because the Jaguars were desperate to get their damaged ships repaired, I was able to ensure that the data recorders of the ships in the battle were traded to us, we have hours of flight recorders, bridge footage, sensor data and now, damage reports which will be made available to you all following this briefing. But..from what you have seen and what you know, I would like to hear your thoughts.

Ewan McCorkell’s voice was clipped and firm as he spoke, as only the second Khan of his Clan, he stood in the shadow of his illustrious predecessor, Stephen McKenna as leader of his Clan, and keeper of its secrets.

Star Admiral Anna Cooper spoke up first, young for her rank, she’d earned her position in battle and in the equally dangerous inter-Bloodhouse politics that played out within the Snow Ravens. “It was a bloody disaster for both sides. There was little organisation, no clear tactics, just two fleets hammering into one another. A few Mongoose Captains did try their Guerre de Course tactics that favoured their cruiser heavy fleet but it was still a case of every ship for themselves.”

There was nods from around the chamber and murmurs of ‘Aff’ in agreement and Khan McCorkell smiled slightly “Aff, now..let us address how we would do in such an engagement. When was the last time that, as a Clan we trained as formations? Sixteen years ago. We have focused on single ship engagements and deployments, despite our overwhelming naval strength. Com-chatter indicates that the Jaguar Captains were even challenging individual Mongoose WarShips to fight them, as if they were nothing more than huge Mechs. Would we have done any different?”

Silence fell upon the briefing room, they all knew the answer to those questions and all eyes fell on the Khan as he moved round to stand before a picture of a dying warship, a Sovetskii Soyuz that was slowly coming apart under the hammering guns of an unseen opponent.

“This will not happen to our Clan. We are better than this, we are better than any other Clan when it comes to naval operations. Where we, Kerensky forbid, forced into a similar position as either Clan, we will not disgrace ourselves in such a clumsy fashion.” McCorkell’s voice rose as he spoke, he knew he was playing for an audience and he had to get his Galaxy Commanders and Star Admirals ‘on side’ so to speak. With the Jaguar’s ascendant they were sure to throw their weight around and he wasn’t about to let the Snow Raven’s be bullied by the brutal Jaguars.

He smiled as he stopped talking “End of speech. Now..let us begin planning for the future, I will have some coffee brought, this will be a long day.”

A good justification for the Snow Raven motivation in your setting.

I could argue the Pentagon Civil War may have seen more warships in combat than the Mongoose Absorption and lets not forget about the Annihilation of the Not-Named Clan with the Switchback Directive or the Widowmaker Absorption. All four naval engagements could provide powerful insights into tactics and strategy during early Clan history.

I could also see very naval commanders bidding in a similar fashion (giant Mechs is a good way to think of it) as what you describe in your story, very Clan like. Just a general comment even towards the Snow Ravens is that the Clans link their naval forces so closely to their ground forces as auxiliaries, almost afterthoughts.

Planning something very different myself. ;)

I don't believe any warships were used in widowmaker absorption or if so very small. When did the research on warships found. We do know was some bitter fighting with Wolverine based on Pardoe novel. The talk about Mongoose and Jaguars was talked about as very vicious naval battles especially with Jaguars needing permission for so many replacements from the naval caches.

I can't believe that no warship combat took place during the Widowmaker Absorption. Perhaps it was smaller scale and Clan tactics might not have fully taken hold at that time but the fighting was vicious. Maybe naval wasn't spoken about but there has to be a reason that the Wolf fleet is smaller than others especially after absorbing another Clan.

I'll have to go back through the research but I believe it clearly stated Widowmaker Khan chose to fight completely with ground troops only

The Widowmaker Absorption may have more info too.

Interestingly enough despite it being a tenacious fight it seems like it was concentrated solely by ground troops. I think thats why Wolf Dragoons had 6 of their Warships. With Wolf still having an impressive 19 themselves.

Golden Age

Quote
It was the largest fleet battle in Clan history, with almost thirty WarShips involved in the fighting plus dozens of DropShip and scores of fighters. The cruiser-based Mongoose fleet was outmatched by the heavier Jaguar battleships, but their fighters helped even out the battle. It seemed that the Mongooses were going to carry the day when the Quicksilver Mongoose shattered the spine of the McKenna-class Obsidian. However, the Lola III Storm Cat crippled the Mongoose battleship, leaving it to drift out of the system leaking atmosphere. With a huge turn of momentum, half of the Mongoose fleet regrouped while the other half tried to press the advantage. In the end, half of the Jaguar fleet was destroyed and the remaining four Mongoose WarShips surrendered.

So if we say almost even in numbers lets say 13 Mongoose vs 15 Jaguars So we have 8 Warships Destroyed from Mongoose 4 captured by Jaguars and 1 Mothballed.

Jaguars then lost 8 warships in this battle as well. 12 afterwards with Mongoose isorla.

Quote
To make protecting their holdings easier, a quarter of the former Mongoose territory was given away in exchange for votes from the Grand Council to allow the Jaguars to acquire some mothballed ships to rebuild their shattered fleet.

Say the Grand Council allowed  them to get the amount lost vs Mongoose that brings them up to 20 warship. Add in the Fredasa's and Carrack that are probably built by clans that brings them to the 23 they have at current times.

The Panic of 3048 – When birds of two different feathers flock together.

The arrival of the Outbound Light in Clan space and the subsequent interrogation of the Explorer Corps JumpShip’s crews caused a near panic in the Clans. When the Interrogation, albeit cherry picked for the worst details was shown to the Grand Council of the Khans, this sense of concern only magnified. Leo Showers had shown the Khans data that he knew would speak to their fears and desires. Opposition to a return to the Inner Sphere, codenamed Operation REVIVAL melted away as the Clans feared that they were going to be discovered by the forces of the Inner Sphere and hit first.

After winning a place in the Invasion Clan Jade Falcon found themselves in a bit of a quandary. Although the Falcons had one of the largest fleets of JumpShips, their WarShip strength was rather limited and they possessed no heavy transports capable of carrying large numbers of troops over the huge distances involved and Falcon Merchants were already drawing upon their JumpShip fleet to set up a Command Circuit of JumpShips from the Homeworlds to where the Clans would strike. There was also the cold hard fact the Falcons didn’t trust the intelligence data provided by the Wolf’s Dragoons. Data that was now twenty years out of date and, came from the Wolves.

The Falcon’s Naval Stars were also quite a mismatch of ships, largely focusing on smaller vessels like the Fredasa class corvette or Congress class frigate as well as having a large number of battleships including a Nightlord class and a Texas class. Seeking to increase the size of their WarShip fleet prior to REVIVAL the Jade Falcons approached the Snow Ravens, not to initiate a Trial of Possession for some of their WarShips, as such a Trial could escalate in size very quickly. But to trade for them.

This started a long, and sometimes fractious series of negotiations between the Ravens and Falcons, both sides sending delegations of Merchants, Scientists and Warriors to the talks. But as weeks turned into Months, the ailing Khan of the Jade Falcons Yvonne Hazen ordered the delegation to make a ‘make or break’ offer.  The Falcon Warriors, headed by Star Colonel Edwin Roshak, overrode the advice of the Merchants then offered the Snow Ravens a fixed percentage of resources from their Occupation Zone once REVIVAL was underway and the ownership of the Falcon’s holdings on Hellgate. With this superb offer on the plate the Raven’s immediately accepted, adding a proviso that they could help escort the Falcons forces in REVIVAL and would send their own DropShips and JumpShips into the Inner Sphere under Snow Raven escort to retrieve these resources.

Glad to be done of four months of ‘tedious negotiations’ the Jade Falcons left and now the Snow Ravens then had the task of finding WarShips they would be willing to give up. As the FRAM (Fleet Refit And Modernisation) program of Project NELSON was all but complete they were unwilling to trade any of these freshly refitted ships and instead turned to scouring their Naval Caches for suitable craft.

This would eventually turn up a total of nine Aegis class cruisers and a Black Lion II class ship, all in their base, un-refitted status. These old ships had largely survived the Amaris Civil War because of their relative obsolescence which in turn made them low priority targets for the M5 Drones of the Hegemony’s SDS. Survey’s found the ships to be in fairly good structural condition and once their Jump Cores were refitted and powerplants brought online, the real investigations into their condition could begin.

With Lum’s slipways largely clear the ten ships were brought in and reactivated, old armour was patched, computers updated and their interiors and crew quarters were thoroughly cleaned. As part of their reconditioning, to also give the appearance that the Jade Falcons were not just getting unwanted castoffs, the Snow Raven’s installed pulse laser and AMS mountings to provide anti-fighter and anti-missile defences and the ships electronics were also replaced with far more modern and reliable systems. Several weapon were swapped out to normalise things and the fuel tanks on all ships were enlarged as the additional range would be most useful during the journey to the Inner Sphere. Onboard security was to be provided by three Stars of Elementals, all in all, the upgrades were still more conservative than the Block IA upgrades of Project NELSON. Finally, the ships were all painted a brilliant Jade Green with yellow striping on them prior to delivery with a full load of ammunition aboard and their systems fully operational.
It was seen as a testament to the effectiveness of the Snow Raven’s yards efficiency that the ten WarShips were all delivered within 6 months of the agreement between the two Clans being made.

The Falcons were happy with their new WarShips, but the ilKhan when he was informed of the details that the Ravens would be escorting the Ravens was furious, as were other Khans, who complained that the Ravens were ‘sneaking their way’ into REVIVAL. The meeting between ilKhan Leo Showers and Khan Lynn McKenna was less a cordial discussion and more a heated debate that nearly escalated into a blazing row when Showers accused the Raven’s of trying to join REVIVAL by stealthy means. Khan McKenna’s blood cooled enough that she swore an oath that the Snow Ravens would not land on any unoccupied world and would only land at DropPort’s manned and controlled by Jade Falcon personnel and that the Snow Ravens would not seek to claim any world as their own.
Somewhat mollified by this, ilKhan Showers ‘requested’ that Khan McKenna make this oath before the Grand Council so that the other Khans would understand what had happened, and see it as the ilKhan bending a Khan to his will as a sign of his position and power.
Accepting this clumsy political move for what it was, Khan McKenna made the vow before the Grand Council and most of the angry grumblings from the Khans died away, if not completely.

The Tanite ‘Gold Rush’ of 2998.

Although the Tanite worlds were discovered in 2965 by Clan Cloud Cobra and was one of the Clans most tightly guarded secrets, their mismanagement of the worlds and a revolt by the Tanite civilians who refused to adopt to the accepted Clan ways saw the Cloud Cobras deploy half their touman to try and stabilize the situation, with the Clan forces fighting guerrilla forces they were ill trained to fight. Such a massive deployment of forces away from their holdings was impossible to hide and the Cloud Cobra’s were questioned before the Grand Council on just what they were up to.

When the Cobra’s finally admitted that they had claimed three colonised worlds for their own that they had found, the Council meeting broke into an uproar. Many Khans argued that the Cobras were hoarding resources for themselves and they were not up to the task of managing these colonies if they required half their touman to try and control some barely armed civilians.
Calls for a Censure of the Cloud Cobras were made but these were voted down, but the Cloud Cobras were forced to concede that other Clans could bid for the right to have enclaves on these new worlds and systems.

Thus, in March 2998 did the ‘Tanite Gold Rush’ begin as a dozen Clans sought to claim enclaves on these worlds and control their populace.
As the other Clans quickly conquered the Taninte worlds and then started fighting amongst each other as well as trying to subjugate the Tanite people they ran into the same problems the Cloud Cobra’s did and found that the Tanite’s were unwilling to assimilate into Clan society and resisted violently. This did lead to a massacre of several towns populations to ‘dissuade’ any uprisings, but this just drove more resistance. The Jaguar’s and Falcons reacted harshly whereas the Nova Cats and Diamond Sharks both tried a softer approach which they found got results. Still resistance continued and by the late 3040’s the Clan’s had resorted to chemical sterilization for a large majority of the Tanite population save those in Diamond Shark and Nova Cat Enclaves, whilst the other Clans resorted to bringing in their own Worker and Technician Caste personnel to run the factories and work the farms.
This also started a spate of Trials between competing Clans within the Homeworlds and in the Tanite systems until only three Clans were not involved in the fighting. The Blood Spirits, who had already sunk into isolationism who had declared the whole mad scramble a waste of time and resources and instead spent their time fighting a series of Trials with their hated Burrock rivals. The Ghost Bears, because of their natural caution were simply too slow to react and by the time the Bears had agreed to do anything in 3000, the Tanite worlds were already largely divided up although some territory was still being fought over. And finally, the Ravens, who were too busy working on their fleet and used the relative quiet brought on by the Gold Rush to finish refitting the CSR James McKenna.

Still a small taskforce of WarShips and ground forces was dispatched to see if the Ravens could pick over anything left behind. Travelling with the Ghost Bears with whom they had a cordial relationship, the Ravens were diverted to an uncharted system when a JumpShip suffered a engine malfunction which limited her jump range. Both Clan forces jumped into the system known only as RDB/0411 on the star charts not knowing what to expect.

What they found was a treasure trove. RDB/0411 or the 411th Red Dwarf Binary system charted during Operation EXODUS was a young system, estimated at being a billion years old and was awash with accreting matter and dwarf planetoids, some on stable orbits but most were not and all were the victim of repeated asteroid strikes, making them useless as colonies. The two Red Dwarf stars were also flaring aggressively and the inner clouds of asteroids and planetoids were bathed with lethal levels of radiation from the two angry stars. But the outer system was still awash with asteroids as well as a single slowly growing Gas Giant.

Survey’s of the asteroid belts found them rich with a wide range of metals and other resources whilst the inner system was found to have several large geranium deposits. With masses of resources within easy reach the Bears and Ravens both immediately realised the value of the system and claimed it as their own, splitting it down the middle before announcing the discovery to the Grand Council.

Realising the huge haul of resources they had bypassed in their rush to get to the Tanite systems and discounting RDB/0411 as a worthless system the Smoke Jaguars, Diamond Sharks and Steel Viper’s all tried to claim space within the system but were kept out with only the Sharks winning some trade concessions from the Ghost Bears. Unable to fight on the ground the aerospace Warriors of the other Clans were simply outclassed by their Snow Raven opponents when the ‘weak’ Clan was targeted by the Vipers and Jaguars.

By 3005 the Ghost Bears and Snow Ravens had both established Recharge Stations as well as several orbital habitats and processing plants within their halves of the system which was now called Serendipity by the Clans. Extensive asteroid mining was started and with the glut of resources available the two Clans were even able to trade some away instead of having to fight off a near endless stream of Trials of Possession for them.

The Snow Ravens would reactivate and deploy their Galleon class Super-Freighter the CSR Universal Conveyor which would be used as a mobile ore processing plant and habitat for the workers manning the mining craft deployed by the DropShips that now trawled the system looking for ores. The Geranium deposits however were far harder to reach and due to the intense radiation given out by the two stars,  any manned craft sent to mine the Geranium would have been ghost ships within a few weeks and the Bears and Ravens were forced to use remotely operated drones but even these suffered a large number of accidents and breakdowns with mining craft lost to radiation damage or flares.  But the cost in small ships was well worth it with tons of Geranium being recovered and it was the resources from the Serendipity system that allowed the Raven’s Project NELSON to go ahead at full speed, finally freed of the need to conserve resources and no longer having to build up stockpiles before bringing a ship in to be upgraded.

The cooperation between the Ravens and Bear’s over the ownership and defence of the Serendipity system also helped bring the two Clans to a level of cooperation that would result in the Bear’s and Ravens working together on the LEVIATHAN Project, largely using the resources from the Serendipity system to help build the gargantuan WarShips.

Great research Bradshaw! I still maintain there has to have been some warship combat there especially after the affair degenerated the way it did with the death of the ilKhan and other Clans helping Wolf in conducting a pseudo Trial of Annihilation.

But lets get back to marauder648's story which is unfolding nicely!

I think the Widowmaker absorption pretty much happened so fast that the Widowmaker's didn't have time to do anything or react before the other Clans were dogpiling them. Unlike the Mongoose clash or the Not Named Annihilation the Widowmaker absorption seems to have happened quickly. Perhaps their ships were sized in orbit without their crews knowing what had happened at first and the only aerospace engagements were fighter and dropship clashes.

Thats my take as well after reading the Operation Turning Point and other references to it. Its basically bang bang and its over.

I did find it odd that the original trial was one on one with Khans for the absorption

I find the 6 month timetable to be way to fast, I think thats a lot of Aegis as well. I don't think there would be that many mothballed even though they are resource hogs.

I'd rewrite this paragraph seems messy to me

Scouring the Clan Mothballed fleet for viable options as part of the exchange with Clan Jade Falcon, Raven engineers found two viable options to refurbish and upgrade as part of the deal. One was the old Samarkand Block II Carriers with two in working order after the process to take them out of mothballing was completed and a third which would require more work but could still be completed after being towed back to the Shipyards of Lum.

Stripping the frame of its outdated weaponry and armor was the first part of this undertaking. When everything was stripped the inclusion of a L-F Battery was added as the hull was already stripped for the new armor and the Raven engineers felt the added time and resources of this would be worth the investiture in resources returning from Jade Falcon territories taken during the invasion.  Replacing the older Ferro-Carbide with the newer Lamellor variety gave better protection for less tonnage requirements. Rethinking the weaponry of the design as the original makeup was barely a threat to most Assault Dropships. Replacing the entire arsenal with Naval PPCs and Naval Lasers that could reach the extreme ranges needed to engage and fight from with the limited weaponry at its command. With the thoughts of keeping enemy fighters honest an entirely reworked and bolstered weapons load was installed including the best in Clan Large Pulses, Gauss and Streak SRMs.

The fighter bays were reworked and an additional deployment bay was reworked as one of the Cargo doors was reconfigured as an additional door for egress/ingress for the Aerospace fighters. Two Triniaries of fighters can be attached to the warship with an additional star of small craft for transportation of goods and troops. The last change of the design was the upgrading of the crew compartments designed to provide additional space for the expected trips back and forth from the Inner Sphere to the Homeworlds.

Rechristened the Maracanda for the ancient Greek name of Samarkand the 3 ships of the design have taken a total of 18 months of time for redeployment and space trials to confirm the ships are in full working order.

My second choice as a Warship in the Snow Raven/Jade Falcon agreement. Just an idea for the refit but really as the design is relatively young. Could just use the original. This is easily the most unknown design of ones that fled with the Exodus and their fates as being unknown.

Designed as a new battle armor for space operations. The Harbringer is a power armor suit that can fight in space as well as on the ground. While best suited to marine actions, it has the capacity to work in ground duties as well in tandem with standard Elemental armor. It has a respectable ground speed that enables it to move nimbly, but it can also leap up to ninety meters at a time.  As well as a cutting torch for both boarding actions and salvage operations. Improved sensors assist with scouting roles and detecting hostiles while performing marine actions. Additional equipment including laser mic and searchlight assist when maneuvering in the depths of space or searching out hidden foes. It also features an Extended Life Support module that allows it to operate for longer periods in the vacuum of space.

So going back to this idea for a moment. In my reading of everything about the Ravens came across this line

Quote
In addition to this, the Ravens were also efficient users of raw materials, breeding a naval phenotype, unique among the Clans, to staff Raven WarShip fleets. The Raven Clan moved silently through Clan society, quietly rebuilding themselves.

Overview:
The Sphinx is a riddle. How this near copy of the Free Worlds League Thera class Carrier made its way into the Cloud Cobra Touman is still a source of many questions. After a two year investigation here is what we have uncovered. A relatively new faction of the Word of Blake named the Inheritors appears to be responsible. Established in early 3061 by Precentor Gillian Taylor the new sect is made up of former Shunners, ex-One Star Faith followers, and Periphery Inheritors Creed adherents. The Inheritors believe that the InnerSphere is doomed to an endless series of wars that culminate in a Great Cataclysm. Only then will the citizens of the InnerSphere call for the Inheritors and establish a new Golden Age that will surpass even the greatness of the Star League. The group has rapidly grown in power especially where it is based the old Rim Worlds. Recently the Ruling Conclave has bestowed the unusual title of Precentor of the Rift on Taylor instead of giving the faction a seat on the Conclave. Apparently this was proposed by the True Believers because the Toyama has a tense relationship with the Inheritors. Despite the Word of Blake’s connection to the Free Worlds League it is a mystery how the Inheritors obtained the Thera design. Perhaps it was another part of the Conclave’s compromise. What is concerning is that the Inheritors carried out some of the construction on the new warship that possibly indicates a secret shipyards located in the somewhere within the Rift. Another mystery is how the Inheritors began their relationship with Clan Cloud Cobra. What is known is that now that relationship seems to be thriving and there is even talk of a new Cloister based on the ideals of the Inheritors. What the Inheritors got in exchange for the Sphinx is unknown at this time.

Capabilities:
Despite looking almost exactly like the Thera the Clan warship is much more formidable. The Sphinx adds Clan Lamellor Ferro-Carbide, more than 1720 tons, for increased protection. However, on the surface it appears that the Sphinx has a weaker armament than the Thera dropping the Heavy Naval Gausses, the Barracuda Missile Launchers, and six Naval Autocannon 30s. All Naval Lasers were upgraded to 55s and standard weapons are all Clan tech. All these weapons are arrayed in a Uniform Firing Arc for more of a defensive posture than actual offensive firepower. The designs most impressive capability is that the Sphinx carries 450 Aerospace Fighters, an entire galaxy! (Organized into 5 clusters of 90 or 3 of 150). The weapons taken off the ship provide more than 74,500 tons of cargo space, ample for supplying fighters in the field. Five docking collars and ten small craft further supplement the Sphinx maybe even giving the Carrier ability to challenge the mighty Leviathan.

Deployment:
Clan Cloud Cobra immediately attached the Sphinx to Delta Galaxy were it served during the Wars of Possession. It’s performance so impressed the Khans that they have ordered one additional Sphinx to be built by the Inheritors. In addition the Clan has ordered the renovation of the Tracial Steiner (Valkyrie class Destroyer) in order to protect their new Carrier force. Snow Raven acquired the Sphinx design from the Cobras in exchange for the new Naval Pulse Lasers that are currently being placed on the Sphinx in place of Naval Lasers. The Ravens commenced construction immediately and their Sphinx should enter service sometime late in 3068. Star Adder has also ordered a Sphinx through their contacts in the Cloud Cobra Clan from the Inheritors. Whatever these Blakist are receiving in exchange for these three warships is a complete mystery despite our best attempts to find out. Other Clans (especially Jade Falcon and Diamond Shark) have expressed interest in acquiring the design.

Another item to go with reputation as being excellent scavengers. I put in a command console even though I think of the small pulses as mining lasers the clans may want a Solahma warrior sitting next to the pilot controlling them.

Hey Marauder what do you think would they have a Water Navy for Lum? Haven't looked at other holdings yet but I know Lum has a large Water %.

Hey Marauder what do you think would they have a Water Navy for Lum? Haven't looked at other holdings yet but I know Lum has a large Water %.

Hmmm....good question. I'd say no. Lum's defences were its warships and aerospace fighters first, Mech's second and i'm not sure about the Raven's views on ground forces or freeborn troops/equipment save as "You are an AA gun."

If there's any blue water stuff it would be OPV's at best as well as SLDF era subs like Morey's and Manta's. The Raven's probably do underwater mining/resource extraction so they'd be useful there.

I also re-worked this

One problem that Khan Hazen recognised what that her Naval Stars were very mismatched. There was a small number of very large WarShips, including two battleships and three battlecruisers. But, there was  very few cruiser scale ships or heavy escorts like destroyers. Instead the remainder of her Clan’s naval strength was largely built of Peregrine and Fredasa class corvettes which supported a few old Congress class frigates, an ancient Whirlwind class ship and a single Vincent class corvette which was used as a training ship. What was needed was cruisers or destroyers. Building these ships would take years and consume resources currently being fed into factories to build up against any attack from the Inner Sphere as well as to strike at them now that REVIVAL was almost assured. So, this only left two options, either launch a Trial of Possession for WarShip assets from other Clans. Or trade for them.
A Trial of Possession appealed to her as a Warrior, but not as a politician and leader as she knew such Trials could rapidly escalate into bloody conflicts and inflict losses her Clan could not afford, not with a return to the Inner Sphere on the horizon.
Most other Clans had limited naval Caches, and they would not trade for their ships, especially to a potential rival. This left the Snow Ravens as the only viable option to cut any deal with and so Khan Yvonne Hazen contacted Khan Lynn McKenna to open a dialogue between the two Clans.

This would eventually turn up a total of nine Aegis class cruisers and a Black Lion II class ship, all older Block refits. These old ships had largely survived the Amaris Civil War because of their relative obsolescence which in turn made them low priority targets for the M5 Drones of the Hegemony’s SDS. Prior to going into mothballs the ships had been updated with systems like Harjel hull sealant and additional hull plating to allow the system to operate fully. But their general age saw them quietly put into monthballs.

Several weapons were swapped out to normalise things and the fuel tanks on all ships were enlarged as the additional range would be most useful during the journey to the Inner Sphere.
Despite the effectiveness of the Raven’s naval yards, with repair crews working around the clock it still took nearly a year to complete the reactivation of all ten ships and deliver them. Falcon personnel, mostly from their huge JumpShip Fleet or Technician Caste were cross-trained with the Falcons having to resort to using washed out Aerospace pilots as crew for the manpower intensive ships that now needed crews.

Despite this, the Falcons were happy with their new WarShips, but the ilKhan when he was informed of the details that the Ravens would be escorting the Ravens was furious, as were other Khans, who complained that the Ravens were ‘sneaking their way’ into REVIVAL.

Seems to flow better

I still disagree on the cache finding. All of the known Aegis that went on the Exodus are accounted for in the standing Toumans. You want a lot of Heavy Cruisers go with the Sovetskii Soyuz

Tis possible, but its a bit tricky as we don't know what two stars were given over to the Falcons, and with there being so many Aegis class ships (seriously, 9 of 'em?) in their fleet that sudden surge of uniformity seems like they were the ships.

I believe there is fluff out there somewhere on the designs given by Ravens to Falcons. Its in later fluff after they talk about the past deal. I'll see what I can find.

I really like the Zulu one especially

Was trying to come up with a Small Craft that could be used as a Mobile Weapons Platform. Basically a BattleSat thats Small Craft sized. So something a Warship or Dropship could come into system and deploy these slow as hell craft that could secure LZs but its hard to come up with a workable payload with such restrictions in designs. I don't know why Small Craft require quarters like a Dropship. Would think could build like Aerospace with just a cockpit.

Looks like there was a majority of Aegis that they lent them. With a mix of others

Lum Garrison Fleet
2 Naval Stars/ Regular/ Fanatical
CO Alpha Star: Star Admiral Thomas Waters
CO Beta Star; Star Admiral Aslf Cole

Recently expanded following the return of ships loaned to the Falcons, the Lum Garrison Fleet currently serves in five two-ship units. The Sovetskii Soyuz-class Avalanche and the newly
returned Aegis-class Morning Violence patrol the Shipping lanes out to Lum's zenith jump point and the Tivoli station located there. The Scabbard and Bloody Talon, Aegis- and Lola III-class
respectively, patrol the routes out to Hofburg station at the nadir point.

The Bonaventure and Eden Rose, both Potemkin-class transports, serve a dual role as guard ships and transports for the numerous factories that orbit Lum at the planet's LaGrange
points, The Essex-class Eternity and the Vincent-class Huninn also guard the factories, while the York-clas Corvidae and the Whirlwind-class Drake serve as a reserve along with the ships of the Naval Command Star.

Swift Wing Naval Assault Star
Naval Star/ Ellte/ Fanatical
CO: Star Admiral Hlnda Shu

This Star's five Warships and their escorts are currently supporting Raven operations on Homer. The lead ship of the star is the McKenna-class James McKenna. supported by the Cameron-class Blizzard. the Aegis-class White Terror (formerly on loan to Clan Jade Falcon) and the Lola-class Spur. The Sovetskii Soyuz-class White Cloud, best WarShip of the 2736 Martial Olympiad. completes the Star.

Brim Naval Assault Star
Naval St at/ Veteran/ Fanatical
CO: Star Admiral Broderick Sukhanov

Assigned to defend Snow Raven holdings on Brim against outside aggression, the Brim Naval Assault Star remains an imposing force despite its role as a security fleet. The Star's flagship is the Conqueror. the first of the Conqueror-class carriers, launched in 3052. It is supported by the Whirlwind-class William Adams, the Congress-class Magpie and the Potemkin-class Snowflake. Heavy firepower Is provided by the Black Justice, an Aegis-class cruiser recently returned from service to Clan Jade Falcon.

Oooh thanks Bradshaw thats super handy :) And hmmm.......

I'll have to re-do the whole 'deal' then..initial idea.

"Yes we will loan you some WarShips to aid escort your Invasion/Liberation fleet, we will also let you use some of our Potemkin's as supply vessels. which we will also escort." And basically the Raven's form  a kind of backstop in case of any hostile naval forces the other Clans can't deal with. Sure they're not part of the invasion but if the ships are close to hand, I'm sure the ilKhan won't mind.... And as the Potemkins are rare and valuable ships, they must be sufficiently escorted. So in the end, in addition to the two stars loaned to the Falcons, they take an additional 3 starts of WarShips along to 'escort' the potemkins. It just so happens these are the most modern or freshly refitted and capable ships the Ravens have.

Its interesting to hear the factories are orbiting lum I always assumed they were either at a nadir or zenith or somewhere else in system.

I'd agree with Bradshaw here, the Aegis class is overused especially compared to how many there are and what survived. Sovetskii Soyuz are a dime a dozen plus there are many Destroyer classes and hell even more McKennas which should be around.

Gotta say I love the idea for the Crow OmniFighter. It is so Snow Raven plus reflects a real life tribe of noted warriors which seems to meet the naming convention for the Clans. Great stuff!

Though I didn't think about this at first but would it make a difference? I know they would then consider military targets if has weapons, but bidding and challenging is done for everything already on planets I would think Recharge Stations would make extremely valuable targets.

I have to say, with another of Marauder's projects on the way and the TWO from another site, these are the only things that keep me interested in Battletech these days.

Using the resources of their binary system the Ravens build these ships to replace their Aegis class ships which are simply too old, even with refits and upgrades, metal fatigue is bone deep and they're just too old to be fixed without basically rebuilding them to replace the worn out hull sections.

Like the name choice much more than mine.

Yours is more realistic I overloaded mine with non-capital weapons

I brought up spending money on 20 logos for the New Clans - she told me she doubted I could afford it and alimony.   :o

Quote the Raven "Nevermore", a fitting name for the design as for many warriors their lives have been cut short by this potent 2nd line conventional fighter from the minds of Clan Snow Raven.  Often overlooked by opposing young trueborns to their dismay this 50 ton conventional fighter packs quite a punch with its Devastator Autocannon and an ability to remove multiple tons of armor in a single pass. Supplemented by a single Type XV Long Range Missile system for engaging targets at range, which many pilots forgo firing at range as they wait until range of the devastating ultra autocannon before singling out their target. Twin Series 2b lasers are there for mop up work or for strafing any bandit foes available.

Not the greatest of fluffs. I had the idea to use this name for a design pop up in my mind last night and couldn't think of anything to design at first but soon realized I've never designed a conventional fighter for the Clans.
