Gumdrop-class Shuttle and Bug-class Lander
« on: August 02, 2017, 12:21:15 AM »

Decided I wanted to do a more generic update of my New Hemet Civilian Exploration and Transportation System. :)

==Overview:==
Greatly resembling historical landing spacecraft from the late 20th and early
21st Century, the Bug-class lander is a small, two-seat spacecraft capable of
taking off and landing on a variety of planetary surfaces.

Incapable of aerodynamic flight, the Bug flies essentially identically to a
spheroid spacecraft.  Capable of 3 Gs of sustained thrust or 4.5 Gs under
emergency power, the Bug class can handle gravitational ranges of all known
human worlds.  Five tons of fuel give a delta-v of 96 km/sec, sufficient for a
45-day flight from Earth to Mars, though the two-seat Bug is considered far
too cramped for such an extended trip.  The Bug carries up to 5.5 tons of
cargo, with a half-ton usually reserved for consumables for the crew.

Bug-class landers are often paired with other spacecraft, whether used as a
small shuttle or runabout, or docked to other small spacecraft, like the
Gumdrop or Pogo class shuttles.  The Gumdrop is especially popular, as both
share the same compact Leenex 60 fusion engine commonly found in the
UrbanMech, among other common components.  The Gumddrop's "CHARM" (Civilian
Habitat & Reentry Module) pod, a conical escape pod, can also be used as
additional living space and life support for long-distance travel.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
==Overview:==
The Gumdrop-class shuttle is meant to be an extremly low-cost spacecraft
capable of carrying up to six people, and travelling distances up to 1
Astronomical Unit (approx. 149.6 million km) in under 15 days, while costing
less than a million C-Bills.

Similar in construction to late 20th and early 21st Century small spacecraft,
but powered by a common Leenex 60 fusion reactor, the Gumdrop is not exactly
an aerodynamic spacecraft, and, like the S-7 Bus, does not generally enter the
atmosphere.  When forced to do so, it flies much like a spheroid small craft
or DropShip, landing on extendable landing legs carried flush against its
cylindracl main fuselage, ensuring that the large rear engine bell has
sufficient clearance to stay off the ground.  Atop the main fuselage is the
detachable main crew compartment, or "CHARM" (Civilian Habitat & Reentry
Module).  A conical module 5 meters tall, the CHARM functions in a manner
essentially identical to the ubiquitous escape pods found throughout the Inner
Sphere, capable of its own limited flight and emergency reentry and landings.

Paired with the full Gumdrop shuttle, however, the CHARM module has access to
the fusion drive, 12 tons of fuel and 4.5 tons of cargo the main fuselage
carries.  This permits the Gumdrop to achieve up to 288 km/sec of delta-v,
sufficient to cross 1 AU every 12 days, with reserve fuel to decelerate at the
end of its journey.  When its cargo hold is completely devoted to supplies and
consumables, this could support six people for 150 days, though in practice,
most Gumdrops rarely carry a full six crew and passengers, and usually reserve
more space for cargo.  The Leenex 60 engine can provide 2 Gs of continuous
thrust or 3 Gs in emergencies.  When paired with the equally-inexpensive
Bug-class lander, the entire "Stack", as it's often referred, has its utility
extended considerably, while still costing less than typical 20-ton
BattleMechs like the Wasp or Stinger.

So the Bug is like SpaceX's (or any other private corp's) planned space plane?

While the Gumdrop is akin to the Apollo or Orion unit with the CHARM pod the command/reentry module?

I like them

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Both are Apollo based. :)

You're dead on that the Gumdrop is an Apollo CSM expy, with the CHARM capsule taking the place of the standard Apollo CM. Variants of the Apollo capsule were proposed that could carry up to 6, and its real-life mass was right in the ballpark for a Battletech escape pod.  The Apollo Service Module, meanwhile, was 25 tons.

The Bug, meanwhile, is patterned after the Apollo Lunar Module (LEM/LM) - one of its nicknames during development was "the Bug" thanks to its shape and window pattern, and its total mass for both stages was 15 tons.

Ideally, I probably should give the Gumdrop a tug adapter, and I may see about doing that later (I'm away from my PC and HMA, and getting ready for a 3-day mini-vacation to Disneyland, so probably not till Saturday).  While the LM was two-stage, that proved to be too big a pain to do on my Bug.

I may see about experimenting with Orion and Dragon V2 expys later. Still want to port over my Soyuz and maybe update that first (yeah, I'm saying Russia never replaced it and people kept building and flying Soyuz long after making them fusion-powered spacecraft).  Orion would be interesting: the capsule is around 10 tons, the service module 15 tons.  Dragon v2 is a whole 'nother ballgame, massing around 6 tons empty and 10 tons fully-loaded. Since that's supposed to do propulsive landings to a degree, I may just build that as a 10-ton ASF with 2 tons of fuel and 3 tons of cargo, emphasizing it's a short-range hauler.  I also want to mess around with satellite rules, to see if they work for smaller space habitats and stations.

The shuttle is more your 10 ton ASF

I like the idea of a Soyuz variant of the future sounds interesting

Gotcha with the Bug yeah a tug adaptor would "link" the two I like it

Orion would be the next stage evolution of the Gumdrop - maybe two versions an orbit to orbit transfer model and one capable of dropping something onto a surface.  Like an exploration model and a lander.

The space shuttles are huge, more like 100 tons in real life.  Their cargo bays are rated for 30 tons, though translated into Battletech using its fusion engines, you end up with more like 70 tons.

Dream Chaser or the X-37B, OTOH...

I'll have to see if I can dig out any of the specs for Altair, and when I do up the Orion, I really want to include a separate habitat module built as a station.  The Orion version will undoubtedly need a tug adapter.

The shuttle lacks orbital flight but this is the future so it could have some capabilities maybe fluffed as unstable in powered flights leading to a simpler take off/landing approach

Dreamchaser would be small

X-37B needs to be a drone fighter?

Orion the movable station would be cool with a CHARM pod and lander
