SOVETSKII SOYUZ II
Overview
Starting in 2989, the Ravens began work on the Scorpion Flagship, CGSS Serket. A Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, the Scorpion leadership intended for this ship (and two others that remained in mothballs in the Dagda Naval Cache) to serve as a mobile Clan Headquarters for Khan, the saKhan, and the Loremaster, respectively.
The original design called for a radical increase in engine power that would deliver greater thrust; however, Raven engineers were able to convince the Scorpions that such an intensive endeavor would require far more time and resources than Clan Goliath Scorpion was willing (or able) to devote to the project.
Instead, the Ravens suggested (and the Scorpions reluctantly accepted) a much simpler rebuild that concentrated on improving command and communications, as well as enhancing the armor, weaponry, and cooling/power generation equipment.
The refit of Serket would require a full six years, with the Flagship reentering the Scorpion Fleet in 2994. SLS Vancover (reflagged as CGSS Hephaestus) entered the Raven yards in 2995 and emerged in 3000, while SLS Biloxi (subsequently redesignated as CGSS Atropos) started her refit in 3001 and completed it in 3006.
Capabilities
The heart of the new Scorpion command ships was a massive 8,300-ton command center installed deep within the core of the Heavy Cruiser. Manned by 83 former Warriors, Scientists, Merchants, and Technicians, and supported by a dozen additional Comm-Scanner techs, this installation and its personnel enables the Khans (and the Loremaster) to govern and direct the Clan even when absent from the Homeworlds or the Pentagon.
Directly connected into the onboard ship's HPG, the massive datastores of the Clan Command HQ allows the Clan's leadership to maintain real-time communications and control over the Clan.
In a similar fashion to the earlier rebuilt Lola IV-class Destroyers, the Ravens also installed a Large Naval Comm-Scanner Suite aboard the command ships. This installation not only steamlines communications to-and-from the vessel (both real-space and HPG), but also gives the leadership far greater sensor reach and resolution.
The Ravens completely overhauled the existing power production and cooling system, installing some 3,250 tons of additional sinks and generators. This would allow the Sovetskii Soyuz II to maintain a constant barrage of fire, even with the newly upgraded weapons array.
Armor protection was also increased, by a much smaller margin (just 390 tons).
The original weapons package was removed and replaced with a more consistent array of weaponry that fit the nature of the new ships far better.
The twin Killer Whale launchers of the original design (mounted in the nose) were instead replaced with three Barracuda launchers, each independently fed by a dedicated 50-missile magazine. Eight NL-45 Naval Lasers (in two bays of four guns each) were also fitted, providing the Scorpion command ships with a greatly increased sting on the nose. For anti-fighter work, eight Large Pulse Lasers (once again in two four-gun turrets) were added as well.
While the removal of the Killer Whales eliminated the ability of the rebuilt Cruisers to fire nuclear ordnance, the Scorpions do not appear to be concerned with the lack of a delivery system for WMDs. Although surprised, the Raven engineers gleefully eliminated the heavy missile launchers, while noting to their pilots that the Scorpion command ships would be far more lethal targets to aerospace fighter and Omnifighter attacks.
The fore-quarters saw a doubling of the number of Barracuda launchers (from one to two, each with a 50-missile magazine) and an increase from 3 NL-45 Naval Lasers to eight. Additionally, 8 Large Pulse Lasers were added to this arc as well.
The stern, which on the original design had not mounted any weaponry, was completely rebuilt to accommodate the same warloard as the fore-quarters arcs.
The broadsides and stern-quarters sacrificed their triple NAC-20 Naval Autocannon mounts in favor of four slightly heavier NAC-25s (in two twin-gun mounts). Although not quite as capable of delivering as heavy a blow as the earlier triple NAC-20 mounts, the overall damage potential increased dramatically. Each twin mount was provided with their own independent magazine containing 100 bursts of fire.
The twin Medium Naval PPCs were retained, but six additional weapons of this type were added to each of the broadside and stern-quarters arcs. Arranged in two four-gun arrays, the M-NPPCs provide the Scorpion Cruisers with heavy long-ranged firepower to supplement the hard-hitting (but shorter ranged) NACs.
Finally, all four broadsides and stern-quarters arcs received eight Large Pulse Lasers (in four-gun turrets).
In a departure from conventional Clan thinking, the Scorpions directed the Ravens to remove the fifth docking collars from Serket and to not install this extra unit on the two previously mothballed vessels.
This freed up enough tonnage to provide the Cruisers with a full 83,000 tons of cargo storage volume, in addition to a year's supply of fuel and provisions!
However, internal corridors were reconstructed to allow room for a full binary of Elemental Marines, while the fighter complement was increased a binary as well. Further, space was provided for a full-strength Star of small craft, as well as the accommodation of up to 174 passengers (in a mix of standard and 1st-class staterooms).
The old grav decks were removed and replaced with four 115-meter diameter units mounted in contra-rotating pairs directly ahead of the engine mountings.
Although still slow to accelerate and sometimes difficult to maneuver, the newly introduced Sovetskii Soyuz IIs have managed to raise eyebrows across the Clans. However, to date, only the Ravens have converted one of their existing ships to this new standard: CSRS Storm Crow. However, rumors on the Chatter-Web suggest that the Ravens may be planning on overhauling both White Cloud and Avalanche as well. Only time will tell.
