Khirghiz
Overview:
One of the oldest aerospace fighters still on active duty in the Clans (only
the Visigoth exceeds the length of service), the Khirghiz is a very powerful
attack fighter. Although slow, it is extremely heavily armored (carrying
more tonnage of ferro-aluminum armor than an Atlas carries in standard!) and
packs a tremendous punch, both at range and in close. Originally a Ghost
Bear design, the Khirghiz is today also produced by the Coyotes. However,
the air-frame has been in service for so long that virtually every Clan can
boast of several in their toumen.
This lord of the sky is only relunctantly giving way to newer and faster designs,
but few can match it in sheer firepower--none in armor protection.
Capabilities:
Massing 100-tons, the Khirghiz has often been compared to the Davion Stuka,
the Marik Reiver, or the old Star League Ahab and Thunderbird designs. It is
a traditional assault fighter in the truest sense of the world, forgoing speed
to carry an impressive battery of weapons and thicker armor plating than any
other known fighter in existence.
The Bears built the frame around a 300-rate extra-light fusion engine that
gives the Khirghiz a safe thrust of 2.5-g's and a maximum thrust of 4-g's.
Ninteen and a half tons of ferro-aluminum armor plating provides sufficient
protection to ignore the thresholding from Class 10 autocannon and Inner
Sphere PPCs on the nose and wings, while the rear can easily stop Clan ER
Mediums from penetrating. In terms of absorbing damage, it would take six
shots from a Class 20 autocannon to damage the internals of a Khirghiz from
the front or sides--four on the rear.
The lasers are concentrated in the nose and tail: two ER Large Lasers and
two ER Medium Lasers in the nose and three more ER Mediums in the tail. Each
wing features a Streak SRM-6 launcher (sharing 15 shots between them) and two
LRM-15 launchers with Artemis IV (with a total of 40 shots, or 10 salvoes per
launcher). As a final affront, the Khirghiz carries an ECM suite to provide
protection from hostile systems.
Twenty-four double strength heat sinks are fitted--enough to fire the nose ER
Larges and all four LRMs for zero net heat generation. Alternatively, the
pilot can fire all the nose guns and one wing for zero net heat. The
ability of this fighter to maintain this level of destruction is nearly
unmatched and provides Clan ASF strike elements with a truely inspired amount
of firepower.
Variants:
The Mod C Khirghiz used by Clan Coyote removes all of the standard weapons and
decreases the heat sinks to fifteen doubles. This variant mounts an LB-20X
autocannon in the nose with fifteen shots (typically 5 cluster and 10 slug),
four ER Medium Lasers in the nose, two ER Small Lasers and an ECM Suite in the
tail, and finally, four LRM-20 launchers with Artemis IV divided amongst the
wings (two in each). Forty-eight missile flights are standard aboard the Mod
C. Heat dissipation is considered adequete as the design can fire its nose
weapons or the LB-20X autocannon and all four LRM-20s simultaneously without
overheating.
Deployment:
Reasonably common throughout Clan space, the majority of the Khirghiz still
remain in the toumens of Ghost Bear and Coyotes. Although approaching a
century in age, the venerable design has lost none of its intimidating
presence in the skies of the Kerensky Cluster and the Pentagon--and is certain
to be a force to be reckoned with once the Clans return to the Inner Sphere.
