Triumph Upgrade - Refit Project - Commments Appreciated
« on: March 07, 2011, 04:09:43 PM »

I'm looking at a Triumph for my campaign merc company.  I'm a mixed force, comprised of Mechs and light vehicles primarily.  I have 6 ASFs, but a Leopard CV to carry those.  The Triumph Upgrade is more like a lateral move when compared to the Obsolete version.  It's lightly armed, armored, and still retains single heat sinks.  I'm going to want to refit to make this a bit more of a bad boy.  Here's what I'll have that needs to fit in there.  I'm going to assume that I can store 'Mechs in the heavy vehicle bays, but they will not be combat ready by any means.

I have 10 'Mechs, 4 will be in the Mech bays, 6 will be in the Heavy Vee bays.  I have 12 Light Vehicles, which will all be in the Light Vee bays.  That leaves me with 18 unused Heavy Vee bays.

I'm thinking, cut 8 Heavy Vee bays for 800 tons back.
Remove the 112 SHS for 112 tons.
Cut the following weapons:
Gauss Rifle & ammo for 19 tons
LRM 20 w/ Artemis & ammo for 13 tons
AC 5s & ammo for 18 tons
LRM 15 w/ Artemis & ammo for 22 tons
LRM 10 w/ Artemis & ammo for 7 tons
Remove ERLL and 2 ML bays on each wing for 14 tons

For a total of 1005 tons of capacity to play with

Add the following back:
Max out arrmor = 11.5 tons
4 Battle Armor Bays = 200 tons
2 Foot Infantry Bays = 10 tons
2 Motorized Infantry Bays = 20 tons
2 Sub Cap Small Lasers 1s = 300 tons
12 AMSs (2 on each facing) + 12 tons of ammo = 18 tons
Each wing adds a pulse bay of 2 LPLs & 2 MPLs = 24 tons each (48 tons)
Nose adds 2 ER PPCs = 14 tons
Aft adds 2 ER PPCs = 14 tons
Aft adds 2 MPLs = 4 tons
Nose adds 1 ML = 3 tons
Add 105 DHS = 105 tons

That uses 747.5 tons of the 1005 freed up originally, leaving 257.5 unused tons.  Any ideas for other improvements?  Some screen launchers or sub cap missiles perhaps?

I'm a fan of Streaks and LB-X ACs for anti-fighter work. A Sub-Cap Missile is great, but better ASF protection would be my suggestion.

Yeah, I was contemplating streaks for up close defense.  The LBXs are great for cluster shots in atmosphere because they force control rolls.  I was trying to stay ammo independent, but I have so many extra tons to play with.  I'll have to play with some SSRM6s and LBXs.  What's the best bang for your buck with LBXs?  2, 5, 10, or 20s?

Personally, I'm a fan of the LB-10X and LB-20X. The later for shear damage. Again, the ability to switch ammunition types lends this weapon some flexibility against non-Aerospace targets.

As for the short range of the LB-20X, most ASF's will try to make a strafing attack on your vessel at some point. LB-20Xs ensure that only happens once.

Thoughts on the Naval Comm-Scanner Suite system?  Worth the tonnage?

IMO - not really.

You're not using this thing for recon. You're using your Triumph in its intended role. If you have another DropShip at your disposal - say something that will remain with your JumpShip after a recon of the system - that would be my ship of choice. True, the Suite could help, but I'd use the tonnage for more tangible and overt benefits.

I mean, work the benefit ratio.

Sure a scanner will give your assault force better intel, but ultimately you're going to have to run the gauntlet regardless. So put the tonnage to best use - slap on extra armor and weapons.

Why not upgrade the Vehicle Bays?
If I remember well, they are not optimised for BattleMechs.
