WarShips of the Clans (A Group Project)
« on: January 29, 2015, 03:17:54 PM »

I have long wished that the Powers That Be would have given us different ships for the Clans instead of the recycled SLDF units that we see in canon.  Modern ships (or even re-built ships!) that make more sense for the Clans of Kerensky.  But that is a pretty large project and I simply do not have enough time to do so.

But . . . Takiro presented an excellent means of developing this concept in his Quicksilver Trials.  So how about we, as a Community, develop some new WarShips for our own Clans?

Pick a ship, pick a class, and post it here.

Can't wait to see what everyone comes up with; I'll begin with the next post.

Aleksandr Kerensky-class Troop Cruiser (Light)

We know that the Clans retained either 29 or 30 Potemkin-class Troop Cruisers in constant use from the time of Operation Klondike to the present day (depending upon whether or not you believe that the Clan Widowmaker Egg Sack was taken by Clan Wolf for conversion into their Troop Cruiser Full Moon).

But why?  The Potemkin was designed to move massive quantities of war-material and combat units for the SLDF . . . and the Clans simply do not require such tremendous transport vessels.  Sure, if you are planning to return to the Inner Sphere (permanently), than you need transport capacity on a large scale . . . but the Clans were not planning on doing this.  Moving their civilian castes and getting away from the Homeworlds completely.

Not, at least until Clan Ghost Bear did just that and packed up everyone and everything and moved them all out (or a good portion of them, at least).

So why do the Clans still keep such costly (both to operate and maintain) vessels in service?  That is a question that has bugged me.

And it got me to thinking:  what if the Clans decided to replace the old Potemkins with smaller ships (less costly to acquire and keep in service) that could do most of what the old Potemkin did on a far smaller frame?  And just how small could such a vessel be made?

The Aleksandr Kerensky is my answer to that.  Built on refurbished and overhauled Aegis-class vessels (will they never just die??), the Clans designed and built the Aleksandr Kerensky class of vessels to replace their hard-used and well-worn Potemkin-class.  With at least 38 (known) examples in service, the selection of the Aegis as the basic vessel allowed Clan Snow Raven to replace existing Troop Cruisers on a one-for-one basis, with an additional nine ships intended for storage within the Naval Caches.  The Clans being who and what they are, however, those nine rebuilt ships were quickly claimed by various Clans in a series of Trials.

Massing 750,000 tons, the new Troop Cruiser (Light) concept was less than half the size of the old Potemkins, but retained fifteen docking collars (60% of the original design's capacity), greater onboard fuel storage, more than 98% of the armor protection, an increase in the amount of on-board firepower . . . all at the cost of some 70% of internal cargo storage (still more than 110,000 tons including spare parts!!).

The Snow Raven engineers braced the internal structure of the newly rebuilt Aegis, allowing for the installation of 1194 tons of ferro-carbide armor plating . . . just 169.5 tons less than the SLDF Potemkin.  Internal passageways and corridors were expanded to accommodate a binary of Elemental Marines (50 total), along with the crew of 312 officers and men.  The fighter bays of the existing heavy cruisers were removed and instead replaced with 10 Small Craft Bays (much like the original Troop Cruisers).  While some Naval Warriors protested, the Ravens noted that even with arranging the fifteen docking collars in three rows of five (port, dorsal, and starboard), there simply was not room to accommodate the launch and landing facilities for another 20 Aerospace or OmniFighters.  Raven Warriors noted, however, that it would be possible to accommodate up to a Star of Fighters at the expense of the onboard Small Craft (although without the dedicated refueling and maintenance infrastructure provided by dedicated fighter bays).  They also pointed out that with fifteen DropShips, it was quite likely that an Aleksandr Kerensky would be carrying at least one carrier DropShip with onboard fighters of its own.

A second grav deck was added, however, allowing for the Aleksandr Kerensky class ships to accommodate up to 358 passengers in addition to the crew and Marines.  Fuel stores was expanded from 10,000 tons to 14,425 tons; a most welcome addition as the SLDF Troop Cruiser had a pronounced tendency to run short while refueling her docked DropShips.  Food provisioning, water, and life support was provided in sufficient quantities to allow these ships to operate for a standard year at full load (although additional provisions and life support could also be stored in the cargo bays).

Cargo storage is an ample (for a three-quarter of a million ton WarShip) 104,430 tons, with an additional 7,500 tons dedicated to spare parts storage.  Raven engineers added Lithium-Fusion Batteries and a Hyper-Pulse Generator to this class during the extensive time spent in dry-dock as well, along with 120 Escape Pods for the crew and passengers.

The original armament of 8 Barracuda capital missile launchers (although magazine capacity was expanded to a total of 240 missiles), 16 NL-45 Naval Lasers, and 24 Heavy N-PPCs was also retained . . . although the Raven engineers repositioned many of the weapons.  A sizeable anti-fighter/small craft/DropShip weapons array was also provided:  16 LRM-15 launchers with Artemis IV (with 1600 missile salvoes stored onboard), 8 Gauss Rifles (832 shots), 40 LB-5X autocannons (4000 cluster rounds stored!), 24 Ultra AC-5 autocannons (2400 twin bursts available), 8 ER PPCs, and 16 Large Pulse Lasers.

These weapons were arrayed in identical configurations firing into the bow, stern, and all six flanking arcs.  Each location contained one Barracuda launcher, two NL-45s, three Heavy N-PPCs, two LRM-15s, 1 Gauss Rifle, 5 LB-5 autocannons, 3 Ultra AC-5s, 1 ER PPC, and two Large Pulse Lasers.  All of the secondary weapons feature enough reach to expand the firing solutions into Long (standard) range and present a formidable defense (especially on the flanks) against hostile ASF and OmniFighters.  Since the return of the Clans to the Inner Sphere and the launch of the Jihad, the class has been heavily criticized for lacking dedicated AMS systems to deal with nuclear weapons; it must be said in the defense of the Clans, however, that such WMDs were (at the time these ships were designed and built) considered 'honorless' weapons fit only for dezgra bandits and worse.  It is therefore quite disingenuous to suggest that the Clan engineers should have been prophets and installed such equipment against a threat that simply did not exist at the time of their construction.

The power production and supply system, as well as the cooling and heat dissipation systems, were radically overhauled and upgraded with double-strength heat sinks in sufficient quantities to allow for the use of all weapon systems simultaneously.

Well this was an ultimate goal of the Quicksilver Initiative but one that required substantial cooperation that might not be as easy as generating new Mech, Fighter, and Vehicle designs. After a while possible 5 years (circa 3057) or 10 (3062) Clan industry could tackle the problem together.

First off we need a Fleet Plan for the Clans.

The Clans are in an interesting position because they so drastically outclass anything the Great Houses and ComStar can possibly field. So does the introduction of the Kerensky class (my version of the Leviathan) mean the Clans are going bigger in an attempt to out do anything the poor InnerSphere can hope to build? Certainly Snow Raven and Ghost Bear may push this agenda.

Or should they embrace a Carrier centered fleet focusing on aerospace deployment possibly something Cloud Cobra might favor? A warship like the Sphinx class which I posted long ago could deploy an entire Galaxy of Fighters!

I would love to do a IIC Dropship and Warship renovation of existing Clan naval forces with a few new ships sprinkled in which perhaps Goliath Scorpion would favor. Yes they would want to keep these living legends in pristine condition but making them useful (a Clan rule) would be nice.

The addition of a Yardship to replace the Newgrange class would seem to be a priority given their insane long distance deployment at this time.

Love to hear your thoughts folks!

I am of the opinion that the Clans don't really need massive (and costly) million-ton-plus vessels.  The larger the ship, the more crew (and Warriors) that the Clan has to divert from the rest of its Touman.  Look at how long it took Clan Ghost Bear to design and build (with Raven assistance) the Leviathan class.  Wouldn't it have been easier to just build JumpShips if what they wanted was transport capacity?

Frankly, I'd love to see the Nightlord reworked (remove those 500 Elemental and 100 OmniMech bays) and turned into a Clan Battleship designed to replace existing McKenna and Texas class ships.  Smaller, lighter, more efficient, less costly, just as effective.  That is my mantra . . . yours may differ.

Pretty much, a smaller, more efficient McKenna and Texas combined into one, with a few 'tweaks' to make her unique.  Anyway, that is where I would go (although, it must be noted that cargo space is very tight, with just under 7% of her total tonnage, before fuel).

Now, I do really like that idea of a CC or SR Galaxy-scale Fighter Carrier (ala the FWL Thera).  600-750 Aerospace or OmniFighters?  Good God, y'all!!  Flight controllers would be putting a pistol to their temples every single day of flight ops!!

It would probably be best, however, to go with a WarShip designed for a Fighter Cluster (150 fighters, plus small craft).

Interesting idea. Pity HMA is so thoroughly secured that I can't install it. Designing warships without a tool like that is a horrific PITA.

Agreed.  I really hope that the folks who were working on Solaris Shipyard get on with it.  That would be a god-send.

I gotta be honest, warships are an entirely different beast alltogether from mechs and ground vehicles.  given that yhe clans started with a massed fleet of 400-500 vessels, the incentive to build new ships as opposed to refitting older vessels.  So far in Canon there is litterally ONE Vessel class that is new to the clans and that is the leviathan, all other "new classes" were refits of older ships

Ah . . . NightlordFredasa?  Remember those?

But your point is taken and understood.  Note that my Aleksandr Kerensky (above) is just a refit (well, rebuild) of the existing Aegis-class ships.

Nightlord was built from Avatars and I flat forgot about the Fredasa

Liberator was built from Avatars . . . Nightlord is a unique (1.2 million ton) new build based on no previous SLDF or Great House design.

...I like this idea!

Unfortunately I can't contribute, but I'll be watching with interest.

The Nightlord and the Fredasa are complete new Clan vessels. Not sure about anything else.

So do we start replacing old SLDF warships with new Clan ones or refit existing?

Mostly refits and rebuilds . . . with a few new designs snuck in there.  That is my vote.  Was thinking . . . since we are 'retiring' the old Potemkins (replaced by my AK-class above), why not transform them into STATIONS?

. . . . . .

Keep their K/F drives (in case you want to relocate the stations), but reduce the transit engines to a 1/2 thrust and give them HUGE grav decks to turn them into make-shift stations.  There are 36 worlds in the Kerensky Cluster, plus the 5 Pentagon worlds, and the Tanite Trio.  44 worlds . . . and 29-30 of them could get a very large and powerful Station.

Could it work?  Would it be cheaper than building an actual station in 29 or 30 systems?  Who knows . . . I don't, that is why I'm asking.  :)

I like the idea of a Potemkin refit station idea sounds cool

The only criticism I have of the Potemkin (LITE) aka the Aleksandr Kerensky class is the identical bays

Way I see it if have identical bays you're building a flying box mixing the bays up a bit gives the design character if you can fluff it have AR-10 turrets that run the forward and rear arcs or conventional turrets that line the flanks

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

That is an interesting plan for any space vessel and something we saw in Historical Klondike. Circe and Fasa come to mind as hubs of activity in that aspect. Just imagine what Strana Mechty has to look like.  ;)

I will have to draw up a fleet plan or discussion between the ilKhan and the Star Admiralty of the Clans. Any Star Admiral from the Clans can partake in this interaction.

Weight range. Most importantly what is our upper limit.
What should the fleets ideal speed be? 3/5 or faster?
Ideal armament. What do we focus on for instance. Naval Gauss?
Structure and armor. Typical structural reinforcement recommended and armor type.
Combat Vessels. I maintain we should have no carriers, the Star League did not, after all warships are carriers. What classes should we have? What should come first? What can wait?
Support Ships. Major topic here is Yardships for me. The Clans do not seem to have them which is incredible given the size of their fleet and distance traveled regularly.
Older Vessels. Star League vessels currently serving in our toumans are nearing 600 hundred years of age. What is their life span? What should be retired first?
