WarShips without Capital-scale Weapons
« on: November 02, 2011, 11:37:05 PM »

With the canon universe moving away from WarShips (again!) and trying to make them extinct (or nearly so), I had the heretical thought that what would have happened if the game had never developed capital scale weaponry?  How would it alter the universe if instead of NACs and NLs and N-PPCs, instead compact core WarShips had to be armed with the same guns every other unit uses?  First and foremost, it means that WarShips can't bombard from orbit, making them bystanders to 'Mech battles on the surface.  In effect, it makes the WarShip into a really big, really well-armored assault DropShip that is capable of moving itself between systems.  Would there still be a role for them?  I think so.

In this scenario, the WarShip still serves primarily as a tool for interdiction:  if the enemies DropShips can't make to orbit, they can't affect the battle.  Plus, there are many different types of industry in space, and the WarShip still threatens them.  In short, we can still see WarShips, but not have them as 'uber-powerful' instruments of win.

Plus, we no longer have a need for all the different advanced types of armor.  Standard armor works just as well given the new damage values of these ships--but they remain a hefty threat to DropShips (and even more so) to Aerospace Fighters.

With the massive amounts of space freed up by the lack of capital guns, it also makes sense to reduce the sizes of canon WarShips.  I believe that an approximate reduction of 50% across the board will suffice.  This would put the largest canon designs (pre-Clans) at the McKenna, which would now mass an even 1,000,000 tons, a bit more than twice the size of a Monolith.  In order to keep things from getting out of hand with 70-point bays (which are doable with standard guns), I also suggest putting a limit on the maximum number of weapons in a single emplacement:  four for lighter ships, six for cruisers and frigates, and perhaps as many as a dozen for battlewagons.  Anything bay above four guns would get a +1 to hit penalty against fighters for every two guns (or fraction thereof) over four.  That would allow destroyers and corvettes to retain their role as AA (anti-aerospace) vessels, and may make the designers of heavier ships also include lighter bays designed to engage ASF.

Anyway, just a few thoughts on the subject.

I have converted the Vincent-class Corvette according to my new scheme, showing here.

Ok, she slimmed down by 50% to 210,000 tons.  But, her armor protection actually increased even though I used standard armor (155 points versus 108).  Both designs (mine and canon) are still 4/6, but I was able to increase the SI on my Vinnie by 10 points to 50, making her even tougher.  She still has no docking collars, but carries six fighters and four small craft, along with 28 Marines, and capacity for 102 passengers or surplus naval personnel.  She lost a lot of absolute range in the switch from capital to standard weapons, but gained an impressive amount of damage capacity, making her more than a match for any assault DropShip in existence (since there are no more nuclear armed capital missile boats around).  Fighter squadrons should be frightened of our cousin Vinnie, here, because she can take them to town without breaking a sweat.

Including fuel, provisions and life support, spare parts, and general cargo space, she carries 46,348 tons, or about 22% of her total mass in cargo fraction.  The old Vincent had 94,520 tons, or about 22.5%.  Percentage wise, the two are close, but in absolute terms, she lost some of her ability to act as a cargo hauler.  But that is why you have cargo DropShips, or compact core Transports.  My Vinnie is designed to fight.

Give me some time, and I'll do the rest of the SLDF ships, or feel free to jump ahead and convert one or two yourselves.  Post 'em below, and above all, let me know what you think.  Until next time, friends!

Yeah your first sentence makes me want to cry. I know that the BattleMech is the central figure of the game but there is room for more. That is my opinion.

Perhaps there would never have been a split between Dropships and Jumpships in your scenario MA. The Compact Core Transport or CCT would make a far more rugged interstellar vessel than the standard jumpship and the only thing it could do presumably is land on planet. Why not make a true combo and go with something less than 100k tons that could land on world? It would be a nice niche for 50k to 100k ton vessels that really never developed. If we get a clever name going I think we got a new innovation. ;)

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I licked my screen when reading your post, excellent idea, backed up by Takiro's thoughts would make a great way to use warships.

Okey-dokey, then.  Here is the Whirlwind cut down to a 260,000 ton Light Destroyer.  In this case, she lost a lot of armor (the drop in tonnage and switch to standard really, really hurt this ship, but with no capital scale guns, it is still more than adequete.  It stayed at 4/6 thrust, but I bumped up the SI to 60 in partial compensation for the lower armor.  The original had a cargo fraction of 69,209.5 tons (13.3%), while this version has a total cargo fraction of 54,323 tons (20.8%)--a substantial increase proportionally.  She does carry a much heftier throw-weight than the Vincent class Corvette, including several advanced Star League weapon systems (Gauss Rifles, LB-10X autocannons, Ultra 5 autocannons, and Artemis IV fire control systems).  Altogether, she is a fairly decent light destroyer for this scenario.

Since the SLDF Whirlwind is based on the Davion-class Destroyer, here is my take on the Davie in this shrunken universe.  I removed all of the advanced weapons, and instead used basic Level 1 (although BattleTech doesn't use that term anymore) weapons, showing here.

Not quite as good without the advanced tech, but still servicable.  You can definately see the difference between House and SLDF ships, however.

Re: WarShips without Capital-scale Weapons
« Reply #5 on: November 03, 2011, 07:41:45 PM »

For the Essex-class Destroyer, I tried to keep the feel of the weapons arrangement.  It too has shrunk down to just 310,000 tons, and in this case I bumped up the thrust from 3/5 to 4/6, keeping the SI at 60.  It lost a bit of armor in the deal, but not too much.  Cargo space was a major casualty, however, dropping from 132,077.5 tons (21.3%) to 65,283 (21.0%), although the proportions remained the same.  This late Star League destroyer incorporates double-strength heat sinks, along with an array of advanced weapons that give it a farther reach than many escorts and patrol ships.  Overall, it ain't bad.

Interesting stuff MA! Maybe I'll start another thread for my Super Droppers with KF Core.

Or post them here.  It is really interesting idea, but I wanted to get the 'canon' ships out of the way first.

Well the basic concept is Heavy Dropship massing 50,000 tons to 100,000 tons equipped with a Compact KF Core that can transit interstellar space as well as planetary atmospheres.

I believe the old rules made creation of 50,000 ton warships possible and I'm not sure what the new Micro KF Core involves.

Limitations would include no capital grade weapons except for missile tubes as per dropships

Would these vessels have a role?

What would their name be? Super Dropper, Mega Droppers???

One thing I noticed when trying to do Takiro's atmo-capable WarDropper was that the way armor works in small WarShips and large DropShips means that you could get heavier protection from less tonnage from a traditional Dropper.  The very small size makes very high SI mandatory to even get close to what a DropShip could have.  Of course, that high SI has advantages of its own.  Anyway, were is an example, the Normandy class Assault Landing Ship.

It is basically a jump-capable Overlord with a LOT more weapons.  Carries 36 'Mechs, 6 ASF, and a company of infantry (marines).  Same speed as an Overlord, but three times as massive, and a very powerful array of guns.  That SI of 70 means it is a brute, and can absorb damage forever once the armor is pierced (if criticals don't kill it, that is).  It has heavier armor than the Overlord as well, and can operate for a fairly long duration.  It is also seven times heavier than an Overlord and costs a whole lot more.

I leave it up to you to decide if this is how you want to go.

The Sub-Compact K-F Core can be as small as 5,000 tons as large as 25,000 tons, weigh 50% unit's tonnage and can carry no DroShip Collars it's also very expensive x16 multiplier I think.

so there's still a gap between standard WarShips and the Sub-Compacts  As of yet nothing about atmosphere entries but it follows standard K-F rules so unlikely able to enter.

It has been questioned on the CBT forum about venting the K-F shutting it down to allow a ship to land however nothing official on this maybe Interstellar Ops

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Thanks for the information Dragon Cat - just what I was looking for.

Sorry gang been working a lot and my brain is seriously drained. Just as a guide line for fairness these vessel as hybrid designs would use the construction rules least favor to each. I haven't looked at what that might be yet but for example if warship engines weigh more than dropship engines I'd follow warship rules. Likewise if dropship SI/armor was better than warship SI/armor I'd follow dropship rules. Again I'm not sure of up from down right now being in a state of mental meltdown but I hope you follow the logic there. Shouldn't make the hybrid suck by any means but will avoid talk of munch.

Ok folks have some naming ideas and I like the top two most.

Landships - as they are space ships designed to land on planetary surfaces it is a good simple fit. Landers also have a BattleTech ring to them that other proposals don't cause everything is a ______ship.
Aerostars - takes from Aerospace fighter and gives you star to star transport only thing is it sounds a little too BattleStar Galactica.
Wardroppers - combination of Warship and Dropship which it is but the name lacks something
Uniship - short for Universal Ship
Tranship - short for Transport Ship

Fluff wise introducing them in BT Shattered Dawn is quite ideal. In the Jumpship Massacre that is the Succession War these ships are introduced by the Terran Republic after 2800 to help fill the void. Despite the price tag which should be high their military applications are obvious. Should make superb raiders in theory although this is just an assumption. Might try a straight conversion of the Mammoth Dropship as the first ship of this type because it is the right size and can land on planet somthing a Behemoth can't do.

I can't really see that much of an issue for KF Drives landing on planet. Obviously you can't use them their because of jump mechanics make such operations in a gravity well impossible. However that being said it is an interesting Robotechy way to commit suicide if you activate said Jump facilities. Increased maintenance would likely be a necessity give repeated exposures to gravities.

I'd like to thank MasterArminas for the original idea and his concept designs. Great stuff!
