WarShips

Almost forgot about these. Any thoughts folks?

I'm thinking some might survive, but not many. What about Pocket WarShips? See any of those lurking about?

How about these http://ourbattletech.com/forum/aerotech/warships-without-capital-scale-weapons/?  We would still have to convert a lot of ships, but it has a number of advantages:

1.  The smaller size means that any state able to produce JumpShips could still churn out a few.
2.  No capital weapons means no orbital bombardment.
3.  They remain expensive enough, and transit drives are complicated enough, to be very rare.

Just a thought.

Normally I'd say yes, but considering AoC makes the SW look nice, I can't see them fitting in.

You know there is something wrong with the FWL, when Word's spell check changes Impavido to Impetigo and Zechetinu to Secretion.

Yes after all they look like Warships ersatz.

This is a great option MA, but unfortunately, I'm keeping the AoC as close to canon (in terms of combat units available) as possible. So it's either regular, run of the mill WarShips or bust.

Personally, I think there's a place for the odd Pocket WarShip. Something modified, but not-quite-standard in its production. No Sub-Cap Weapons, so we're basically looking at the odd Capital Launcher, or dare I say it, Naval Laser.

I think Pocket WarShips might be your best solution if you want to keep some "WarShips" around. After all they are based on standard DropShips. Only Capital Missile Launchers would set them apart from standard DropShips, so they could be both financially and technologically within the capabilities of the various realms.

And if they're not mass-produced but built only occasionally in small numbers they might fit in.

I'm think you're right Hessian. The occasional Dropper armed with a Capital Launcher or two might show up from time to time, but little else. There are a few WarShips in this AU, but not what you'd expect.

...I use 'JumpSats' in my AU - battlestations with a Jump Boom.  They're carried by JS, mount a single Cap weapon and maybe a squadron of AS Fighters (mostly for point defense, like a canon Poignard).  They turn a standard JS into a unit capable of acting like a Q-ship or for convoy protection, like a housewife in the car with a .38.  Pity the fool who tries to carjack HER.

Could they be retrofitted DropShips?
What are the numbers of Dropships available in AoC and the production capacities from the different States/Powers?

A cool concept, bad sadly outside the scope of the AoC. The AoC is like the Succession Wars x 2.5, so something as neat and clean as a JumpStat wouldn't be built. Still, it's pretty cool. Almost like seeding space mines, but with a capital weapon.

The "WarShips" as they exist in the AoC are probably going to be retrofitted DropShips. The total number of DropShips, and JumpShips, like in canon won't be explicitly stated in finite numbers, but the suggested total number is low. Existing production and maintenance facilities are far and few between, and the waiting list long to use one. If a Pocket WarShip does show up, it's a one of a kind modification, and won't be the best "technical" shape. Still, this type of unit will likely represent an enormous local advantage and only committed for the most desperate, or important missions.

Thanks.  Just as well, though - keeps it for me!

This looks pretty much like the WarShips in the 2nd Succession War, doesn't it?

If they had any, I'd guess correct. With the Q Ship Two-Step CGL has written into the fiction since the start of the Jihad, I imagine we'll see new mentions of Pocket WarShips in previous eras...perhaps disappearing towards the start-mid point of the Third Succession War, so not to upset everything that's been written?

We know they were around during the Star League era, so why not up to a century-ish later until things become really bad?

I kinda like the idea of one or two propper warships being left alive, say used as point defence for some of the major nations capitals.
