Best Practices: Battle Armor Taxis
« on: March 09, 2011, 01:26:08 PM »

I'm looking at starting a dedicated Battle Armor platoon...probably Fa Shih since we're working for CapCon.  I'm trying to decide on the best method for taxi'ing them around.  The unit will most likely be used for city fighting, especially if we'll be having to deal with conventional forces, making Fa Shih's pretty ideal.  Mine some roads and hamper the PBIs.  Anyway, I'm debating some different methods...

1. Omni / Hovers - Fast, speedy, and great in cities because they only slip-slide and don't skid (which increases pilot check difficulty).  Usually loaded with SRMs, they're effective in close combat situations.

2. Light Jumping 'Mechs - Looking at a couple different 7/11/7 movement profile 'Mechs to deliver BA in a city.  7 jump carries you a long way to remaining out of LOS and then maneuvering for back shots the rest of the game.  Unfortunately, light 'Mechs moving 7/11/7 don't have much in the way of armor.

3. Warrior VTOLs - There's a battle armor transport variant that I believe moves 10/15.  Fairly useless after delivery, they have the advantage of being cheap.  They also can place BA on tops of buildings, which tends to be better than dumping them in the street.  Additionally, they can use their elevation changing abilities to block LOS and stay safe.  Additionally, they're decent at making mid-game pickups and drop offs if you need to change your location to get closer to the action.

So yeah, thoughts on the options I've presented above.  Other options I haven't thought of yet?  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm a big fan of the combo when it comes to BA. Depending on the composition and total amount of BA available, you can work all three types into your strategy with a couple of changes.

For one, I'm a big fan of the fast hovercraft for impromptu BA delivery. Coupled with those fast flying VTOLs, you can bring BA to just about any location or elevation fast with some support.

Rather than using light 'Mechs, consider using some fast heavies. They'll have a little more punch than a light 'Mech (despite the lighter armor) and when used in conjunction with Hovercraft and VTOLs better support for both.

Your choice of BA transport can also change or modify the objective nature of your BA. The BA I'd add to my fast heavies would be geared more towards Anti-Mech/Anti-Infantry. While the BA I assigned to my VTOLs would be more support oriented - in effect creating mobile short ranged artillery. Fast Hovercraft would receive either more generic BA or a good mix of all three depending on the scenario - like Anti-Mech if I plan on using the BA in a city to help slow down/disable some 'Mechs.

I'm not a fan of light 'Mechs deploying BA unless they're desperately necessary in another role - using a Beagle Probe, TAG, etc. If speed is an issue, the VTOL/Hover combo is far better.

I'd like to encourage you to look to BattleMechs for delivering Battle Armor, particularly of the magnetic clamp variety.

Battle Armor's combat role is to support and supplement the BattleMech on the battlefield.  Ergo, the best way to remain in range to do so is to operate directly from the BattleMech being supported.

The problem with operating Battle Armor from hovercraft and VTOLs is that the slow, durable nature of the Battle Armor squad is completely at odds with the fast, fragile nature of those transports.  The Battle Armor can do little to nothing to support the hovertank or VTOL in their combat role, and once delivered, neither the hovercraft nor VTOL can stick around to support the battle armor without putting themselves in undo risk.  No matter what model is being used, a hovercraft or VTOL for Battle Armor transport is just a glorified taxi.

A BattleMech & Battle Armor Squad, however, can fight together as a synergized team.  Battle Armor riding a BattleMech provide additional armor and can repel enemy infantry attempting swarm attacks.  Once dismounted, the BattleMech can remain nearby the Battle Armor, both combining their firepower against a single target or allowing the Battle Armor to eliminate minor threats while the BattleMech engages your primary targets.  Unlike hovercraft, the BattleMech can cross any terrain a Battle Armor squad can, and can deliver the BA directly into covering terrain.  Unlike the VTOL, the BattleMech can benefit from the same terrain the BA are deployed into.

Whenever possible, it is best to make use of BattleMechs for Battle Armor delivery.  dedicated BA transport vehicles should only be used when OmniMechs/Magnetic Clamps are unavailable or to transport the truly massive assault suits which cannot be mechanized.

I never really thought about Battle Armour Taxis (I know I am a Clanner but still).
I should try the BattleMech taxis of the Marne  ;)
