Unit TO&E Question
« on: March 17, 2011, 02:11:58 PM »

In another thread I asked about the use or uses of a SLDF/WoB inspired Lance consisting of a stock Spartan, Black Knight, Shootist & Excalibur.

The question soon became, "Is this the right mix of 'Mech-types and what could we add/swap?"

To prevent an overload of what I consider a seriously awesome thread, I'm starting a new one with the express purpose of, well frankly, helping me out.

What I'd most likely want to play is either the SLDF or WoB faction. Not only are most of the 'Mechs I own and painted one or the other, there is a canon-factor I like to take into account with my unit design. So there we have it. I'm looking to put together a Level II or Lance around some or all of the aforementioned designs plus anything else you fellows come up with.

If possible, I'd also like to hear about some uses. Being a newb I'm more than happy to pick your brains for useful information. As always, I defer to the experts, i.e. anyone with more experience than myself.  ;)

Thanks in advance!

Well, I'd be interested in hearing about both truth be told. I know I'll be looking for some one-off games, but after (sneakily) reading about your campaign I'm more than interested in some sort of consistent long-term campaign play for myself.

Ok, it actually makes a big difference.  XL engine and no CASE is ok in one-offs, the result is the same...a dead 'Mech.  In a campaign, that .5 tons is the difference between salvageable or not salvageable.  Obviously you can customize that in later, but like I said, it makes a difference.

Well, we should lay down some ground rules. When you say SLDF, do you mean SLDF back in the day or just Blakist inheritors of the designs? Back in the day also begs the question of standard SLDF or Royals with their pimped out designs. The modern day Wobbie must also decide between Protectorate Guard, standard Blakist and Manai Domnini.

All these factions have a little bit different feel to them, so it's good to know where you feel the most comfy with before we start tossing designs out your way.

It would also help if you could tell us what you like to do in tactical combat games in general.  Often that can translate into the units you might field in BattleTech.

Honestly, I'm really flexible. When I did play I enjoyed playing it "different" in almost every game - different tactics, units, etc.  For me, it wasn't about winning or losing, but about learning and trying something new. Plus, with the new rule books it'll be like relearning how to play game all over again.

If I did have to peg on some generics, when I used to play other tactical games like fantasy and 40K, I usually opted for either fast moving aggressive sweeping assaults (Eldar) or the methodical gun line approach. However, towards the end it was usually just letting the Orks do their thing on the table - animosity is super fun!

Sorry, I guess I should have been a bit more specific even if the teacher in me screams to write, "all of the above." To keep you gents from writing a novel I'll settle on Regular SLDF and Standard Blakist. If I'm feeling a bit squirrelly in a month or so I'll ask for Royal SLDF and Manei Domini.  ;)

Like I mentioned earlier. I'm not really "comfortable" or "uncomfortable" with anything. Right now, I'm a blank slate looking to learn.

Thanks!

I can't believe that.

Perhaps a Company (or the Blakist equivalent) is the good size to begin with.
This would give you the opportunity to try different things while making the unit a little more coherent (or you could go for the real SLDF approach and use a company of Black Knights  ;))

Opps, posted it in the wrong spot (other thread).  Give us a list of what 'Mechs you got.  Give us a decent starting point to make suggestions.

Alright. I have a couple of Atlases, Highlander IICs (which I use as regular Highlanders - I think they're better looking sculpts), Black Knights, Tempests, Lynxes, Wasps, Archers, Kintaros and an odd Lancelot. I also have a Bombardier, Shootist, Excalibur, Marauder, Warhammer, Mercury, Catapult and I found an odd Hussar. I've also managed to locate a couple of Rhino and Puma Tanks.

I have more, but there's no way to lay my hands on them for the time being. I haven't purchased any new minis in a long time, so if I want to create a more modern WoB force I'm going to have to buy them. (Which I'm all for!)

You know there is something wrong with the FWL, when Word's spell check changes Impavido to Impetigo and Zechetinu to Secretion.

You need the help.  My 20+ years of reading BT did nothing to save my sorry ass from Andrea when we opened the box set. That girl is a terror on the battlefield.
