Artwork from our campaign
« on: February 03, 2015, 05:39:45 AM »

Our gaming group runs a couple of Battletech campaigns, both AU with one clan and the other 2SW. Recently I had the idea of creating a sketch after each session to show an important part of the battle, as a sort of battlereport and simply for practice. Here's the first such sketch and story. The campaign follows a private army in the employ of the Lyrans, led by Knight Lando Amadeus (my character) and stocked with a couple of skye separatists in the making.

While assaulting a world in Marik space, Lando's Lancers were tasked with coming to the aid of a Cladius Steiner who had been trapped between two enemy forces. The lancers deployed in an amphibious assault against a small city where the enemy had been lying in wait for Cladius. During the engagement, an enemy Banshee charged forward towards the second landing craft and its two deployed DI Morgan assault tanks. Massed PPC fire tried to down the charging assault but many of the shots hit the water. The Banshee was able to inflict a terrible toll before allied units could down the unit and eventually carry the day.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Excellent art. I'm a long time fan of the Banshee so seeing this was great!

Well my plan to do sketches every week fell completely flat. To be honest I was getting a little bored with doing drawings of that quality. So after a long hiatus, I have finally taken some of my artwork to the next step.

Rather than take something from Battletech, I decided to take a Mech design of my own from pen&marker sketch to a finished digital painting. After many hours of work and with some great digital painting advice from my wife I was able to bring it to a state I was satisfied with.

Enjoy

With this finished I'll take a bit of a break from digital painting and switch gears, but for my next piece I plan to do some more fan artwork featuring the PC mechs from our battletech campaign. Hopefully I can show that in a month or two.

Is it me or the Vulcan has a big belly?

And this is not a criticism as I don't know how to draw.

Don't need to draw to criticize a drawing.  :D
Yeah the Vulcan didn't turn out as well as I would have liked, originally I was bothered only by the legs but I think you're right that the head is a bit too far back. It should be more over the "belly" instead of sunken back as it is. That's why the belly looks too big, though the mech in general might be deeper than it should be. Was working off the TRO drawings not a miniature. The sketch is a bit quick, only spent about an hour on it all told, so some of the proportions or perspective are probably off.

New Sketch, "Convoy Duty".
Supposed to be a GRF-1S Griffin but I put the LRM-5 on the wrong torso. Close enough.

Next week's sketch features an iconic assault mech in a very un-iconic configuration.

What? I thought everyone just LOVED escort missions, particular those of the computer game variety.
