Star Colonel Sandra Barclay: Which Configuration Would She Use?

In 3068, Clan Goliath Scorpion absorbs the 71st Light Horse Regiment of the Eridani Light Horse in a Trial of Possession on Huntress.  By canon, the Scorpions were able to field two light Clusters from the abtakha taken in this Trial.  In my timeline, they instead formed the 19th Scorpion Light Horse, a fast-moving, light-weight Cluster of troops that utilize the Hooded Eagle OmniMech and Comanche OmniFighter exclusively.

The Scorpions, after the departure of the Clan from the Homeworlds to found the Scorpion Expanses in the former Circinus Federation, decide to honor the leader of the former Eridani in their ranks (Sandra Barclay) by creating a new Blood Heritage:  Barclay.  In 3071, Star Colonel Sandra won the first of this Heritage's Blood Names, quickly followed by six more of her Warriors.  While this would infuriate more conservative Clans, the Scorpions (by this point) could not care less.  It did ruffle some feathers in the Council of Seven . . . but the distance between the Scorpions and the remaining Clans prevented outright combat and Trials of Refusal.  Soon enough, the Council of Seven simply accepted the new Blood Heritage and some even followed the Scorpion lead (most notably the Ravens in the former Outworlds Alliance).

Star Colonel Sandra Barclay pilots a Hooded Eagle OmniMech . . . a 45-ton war machine based heavily upon the famous Ice Ferret (aka Fenris).  But now we must decide which configuration she most often uses.

To help with that, I've reposted the 'Mech and its various configurations below.

But here is a quick summary:

Hooded Eagle

Overview:
First introduced in 3035, the Hooded Eagle is the lightest of the new OmniMechs and BattleMechs fielded by Clan Goliath Scorpion. Based upon the venerable Ice Ferret OmniMech of Clan Wolf, the Hooded Eagle has a slightly heavier weapon payload and armor thickness, at the cost of some of the earlier design's fixed cooling capacity. Intended as a recon/skirmisher/striker, the Hooded Eagle is heavily optimized for that role . . . which could get a Warrior trying to using  this OmniMech in another role in considerable trouble if he is not careful.

Capabilities:
Using Ice Ferret plans acquired from their ally Clan Wolf, Scorpion Scientists stripped down the OmniMech to its bare chassis. The high turn of speed of the design was a major reason that the Ice Ferret had been selected as the basis for the Hooded Eagle and the engineers retained that massive 360XL engine.  Armor protection was slightly increased (to eight tons) and pod-space increased as well (to eleven tons); these improvements came through the elimination of two tons of redundant (from the Scorpion point-of-view) cooling systems.

There are two sub-variants of the Prime Configuration. Each (the Prime-1 and Prime-2) are armed with a right-arm mounted ER PPC and a left arm mounted ER Medium Laser, both tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso. An eleventh double-strength heat sink has been installed in the left torso as well. The only difference between the two is the Prime-1 mounts an Active Probe in the head, while the Prime-2 instead features an ECM Suite.

Configuration A is armed with two ER Large Lasers (right arm and left arm, both of which have fully functional lower arm and hand actuators) that are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer mounted in the right torso. As with the Prime(s), an eleventh double-strength heat sink (in the left torso) has been fitted . . . but unlike the heat-neutral Prime(s), the Hooded Eagle A has a pronounced tendency to run slightly hot. A skilled Warrior should be able to easily compensate for the excess overheat, but it is something that the Warrior needs to watch closely and keep in mind during combat operations.

Configuration B has a single ER Large Laser (right arm) and six ER Small Lasers (two each in the left arm, right torso, and left torso), all of which are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Twelve double-strength heat sinks alleviate all heat generated save for that caused by movement.

Configuration C is designed for close-range engagements with four ER Medium Lasers (two each right arm and left arm) and four ER Small Lasers (two each right torso and left torso), all tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Thirteen double-strength heat sinks are insufficient to deal with the total heat produced by this configuration, but the excess overheat produced is minor and easily within the ability of a Clan Warrior to compensate for.

While Clan Goliath Scorpion does not care for missile weapons, it does recognize the need for such systems from time to time.  Configuration D features an LRM-10 launcher with Artemis IV Fire-Control Systems in the right arm fed by two tons of ammunition, backed up by three ER Medium Lasers (left arm, right torso, and left torso) and an ER Small Laser (head).  All four lasers are tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer placed in the right torso.  Eleven double-strength heat sinks ensure that excess overheat is only generated
on a running Alpha Strike . . . and even that is minor.

Configuration F is designed for duels between Clan Warriors.  Two ER Medium Lasers are the longest ranged armament of the configuration (right arm and left arm), but at close range ten ER Small Lasers come to bear (four each right torso and left torso, one each in the right arm and left arm).  All twelve lasers are tied into a two-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Only eleven double-strength heat sinks are mounted, although this compensates for heat generated by the OmniMech running and firing all ten of the ER Small Lasers.  At mid-ranges where only the ER Medium Lasers can be brought to bear, the configuration runs cool.

Configuration G includes eight jump jets (four each right torso and left torso).  The only armament is an ER Large Laser in the right arm, tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Ten double-strength heat sinks render the configuration heat-neutral on a jumping Alpha Strike.  The configuration also carries an Active Probe (head) and an ECM Suite (right torso) making it a superb scout/recon element.

The G-TAG configuration removes the right torso ECM Suite and replaces it with a TAG system in the left arm.  Normally this configuration is only deployed by the Reserve Artillery Trinarys of the Scorpion Touman.

Finally, Configuration I is intended to combat hostile infantry formations.  A head-mounted Active Probe locates hidden units in built-up urban areas, while an ECM Suite in the right torso denigrates opposing sensors and electronics and an Anti-Missile System in the left torso (with one ton of ammunition) reduces the effectiveness of hostile missile systems.  Armament is rather light, but all tied into a one-ton Targeting Computer in the right torso.  Two ER Medium Lasers are main weapons (right arm and left arm) supported by four AP Gauss Rifles (two each right torso and left torso) fed by two tons of ammunition.  For added effectiveness versus infantry formations and for incendiary work (as distasteful as that may be to Clan Warriors), a Flamer has been included in the right arm as well.  Ten double-strength heat sinks fully compensate for all heat generated by weapons and movement.

Deployment:
Clan Goliath Scorpion has managed to produce and deploy nearly three hundred Hooded Eagles in the three decades since its introduction. Although a medium-weight OmniMech, it is the now the lightest (and swiftest) 'Mech to be found within the Scorpion Touman. But the Scorpions are not the only users of the design. While Clan Wolf prefers their own Ice Ferret and Clan Ghost Bear their Viper designs, several other Clans (including the Cloud Cobras, Diamond Sharks, and Star Adders) have expressed an interest in the new design. Several score of these OmniMechs have been traded or sold off to interested parties and rumor suggests that the Adders (among others) will soon be seeking the production rights for the design.

Yeah.  Unfortunately, the 19th Scorpion Light Horse is the lightest and swiftest unit in the Scorpion Touman and the only 'Mechs they operate are the Hooded Eagle, Ice Ferret, a handful of Vipers, and other units moving 8/12/x or faster.  So a Cerberus IIC is pretty much out of the question, and so is the Mad Dog

I decided on the composition of the 19th SLH based on the original concept of the Light Horse and Striker regiments of the Eridani.  Fast light-weight and medium-weight designs able to out maneuver the enemy.  Thanks to Clan-tech, now they can carry decent firepower as well.  Not as much as a heavy- or assault-weight design, of course, but enough that anything can catch them doesn't really want to!

I mean, 47 Hooded Eagles, 85 Elementals (all riding OmniMechs as mechanized battle armor until they have to deploy), and 22 Comanches . . . what IS force of 8/12 or faster units is going to seriously try and catch that?  Even units moving at 7/11 or 6/9 would have a hard time . . . and the 19th could just disengage from them with ease if they presented a problem.

Anyway, love to see what sort of custom design you can come up with.  One idea that I had was to modify Configuration F by removing the two ER Medium Lasers and ECM Suite and adding two more DHS and another pair of ER Small Lasers.  Can't engage any target at ranges of 7 or greater, but in close? 

Oh, my!

A dozen Clan ER Small Lasers (60 points maximum damage!!) on a 45-ton frame moving at 8/12/0 with max armor (153 actual versus 153 maximum!!) AND is heat-neutral on a running Alpha Strike to boot?  With a targeting computer to make those dozen laser beams more accurate?

Kind of like the Wolf's Dragoons 3025 Wasp variant, just bigger, faster, tougher, more accurate, and able to inflict triple the damage!!  Just without the ability to jump.

But post your custom ride here and I'll give it a look-see.  Can't wait to see what you come up with.

A since it carries two main guns like the Cerberus  :P
For a more neutral but less precise Configuration, you could drop the Targeting Computer for 2 more Heat Sinks.

Expensive but fulfills the requirements. Now up two you if we go two ER PPCs while removing everything else for DHS or some other configuration.

I thought about going down to an Adder and bring the speed up cause its primary configuration is identical.

Sadly with such large engines I'd go with energy weapons over Gausses from her old Cerberus.

What do you guys think??

What is her opponent piloting? I thought an aerospace fighter originally but rereading your original post that was a aerospace fighter that is also part of her unit.

Why go to 50 tons?  Just using a basic Hooded Eagle frame and replacing the 360XL with a 360XXL will increase pod-space from 11.0 tons (standard Hooded Eagle) to 16.5 tons with an AV of 153 and 61 points of internal structure.  Your 50-ton suggestion only has 15.0 tons pod-space with the same AV of 153 (but IS increases to 67).  If we go max armor (8.5 tons ferro-fibrous) for an AV of 163, pod-space drops to 14.5 tons.

No specific opponent.  I'm not talking about a duel; I'm talking about which OmniMech configuration that she would (or should) be using to command (and lead) her Cluster on the field of battle.

I suppose that is possible. With an Ice Hellion tie in we could even talk about an advanced prototype of the Ice Ferret which uses an XXL and a Small Cockpit.
