Need Mapping Help
« on: May 03, 2019, 10:28:56 AM »

Hi all
As some of you know, and are familiar with, I am working on a military history companion to my story "Clover Spear, the War of '56". I was hoping I could get some mapping assistance or be told where to get the files to do it myself it it came to that. Either way? Any assistance would be welcome. Please PM me if you can be of assistance, or know someone who could be.

Calling all cartographers!!!

I know people who could help you if you find no one else (they are not really in the CBT thing).

Just bumping this as I could really use the help, as I would love a military history book done right with maps! Please, if you can be of assistance, get in touch. Have tried to use Web ArcGIS and been all thumbs.

Thanks!

Have you tried PMing Blacknova? He's probably the best person for maps.

I saw some rough but usable Maps made through Excel recently.

I'm also trying to get some professional looking maps done up, to track some months of progress I've worked out in an Alternative KU departing from 3033-04.

Did I get you on the right path with the pointers I gave you?

You know there is something wrong with the FWL, when Word's spell check changes Impavido to Impetigo and Zechetinu to Secretion.

trying to get it set it as a geodatabase.  the base map doesn't seem to talk to the data I have set up properly, so I have sidetracked it for a bit and was doing it manually with paint, and Excel.  managed to progress things a few turns very differently than I am sure you had planned out.

I have the data fields for systems, X, Y, Enclaves, Garrison, production (A, B, C, D, J, R, W).  Faction by Date
Forces, name, code, type, Exp, Loy, Tech, Faction, Warship class, assigned T, Merc contract date....  location by date, CUR by date.

Need it to be able to draw the maps by date, showing locations of forces (code), Production #'s, Faction ownership... draw the borders etc.

Transactions are battle results, repair, transport changes, movement orders, ownership changes

Battles are formula based on planet ownership check, STR/CUR totals, random damage done, resulting in end state CUR for each unit, retreating units flagged as routed.

right now I have the base data from the original game, and worked out a couple extra months of action, but without maps it gets very hard to continue after a few months in.

Each month I would take the data from the excel sheets and export the unit, factory and planet data as tab-delimited text files.

There are two ways to go from here. You can import the txt files, then export the data as a dbf, then "show X,Y" for the dbf, then save the event layer as a Shp file by exporting data again. You can then point the original layer to the new shapefile and it updates.

The other way is to ensure that the FID that the SHP files use are also in your excel files. When you export to dbf, you can join the txt files as tables to the original shp files then export as a new shp, or just use the join each month. Exporting the data this way though gives you a double up in all the columns, so although it is fast for a quick and dirty join then map, the data is messier if you are saving files month to month.

Happy to walk you through it over Skype if you want me to.
