A Chatterweb Challenge
« on: November 12, 2013, 04:39:12 AM »

OOC: Josh and I have decided to go public with this one as it should be fun.  The Sea Foxes see putting it on the Catterweb as a good way to goad the Hellions to rash action with the forces already in system.

Khan Travis Cage of Clan Ice Hellion,

I, Star Admiral Elias Nagasawa, Commander of the Clan Sea Fox Alpha Naval Reserve do challenge your Clan to the entire contents of your Clans Naval Cache.

I will engage your chosen Hellion forces with the CSF Terror of the Deep (Nightlord-class), CSF Bloodlust   (Aegis-class), CSF Nagasawa (Sovetskii Soyuz-class) and CSF Mako and CSF Thresher (Splendid-class).

With what forces will you defend your assets?  Be quick now little Hellion, for all the Clans are watching.  Tarry not, lest you show your Clan as Warriors only when words and not deeds are at stake.

Are the Hellions cowering in their dens?  Is the threat of combat making them think it is too hot out?  Perhaps Hellions, it would be better for you if we merely sat here a threw insults at your world, as that seems the only game a Hellion can play, and even then poorly so.

I await your response, or perhaps you would prefer to simply hand over the vessels?

Ah little Hellion, hiding in you den,
Won't come out and face the real men.

I, Star Admiral Nathan Cage, Commander of the Hellion's Claws Naval Star accept your challenge to honorable combat. You have made a grave mistake Fox, coming to the Hellion's hunting grounds. You should have paid homage like your totem. Now, the cold caress of vacuum will accept the remains of your rendered ships as easily as the frozen wastes of Hector.

I will defend my Clan's naval cache with all of the forces at my disposal. The Chaos Sailor, Swift Bait, Cold Hunter, Cage's Pride, Pack Leader and four Trinaries of fighters from the 40th, 77th, 78th and 150th Lancers will meet you in battle.

Star Admiral Cage,

I do believe I challenged your Khan, however, if the Hellion Khan must hide like a surat behind lesser Warriors and not face his equal, then so be it.

Bargained well and done, despite you pitiful addition of you fighter Trinaries.

Star Admiral Nagasawa,

Once again you vaunted Chatterweb has failed you Fox, as my Khan is on Strana Mechty. Clearly you have miscalculated stravag, and you will find no profit here. My contempt for your challenge is reason enough to include the fighters.

I look forward to teaching you the folly of entering the Hellion's den.

(OOC: Seeing how you dropped the "bargained and done" phrase, you're stuck with the original bid. Har har har! :P )

I really am half asleep this week.

How does that work, should a defender toss out an over sized response?  I assume the attacker would have to break bid before the assault.  For hard line Clans, I could not see them doing it, but for more flexible Clans or in nasty feuds, they would be more willing to respond in kind.

For example, in this case I would see the Foxes adding in the nearby 27th Combined Air Strike, which does not quite match the IH numbers or skill, but addresses the lack of heavy fighter cover for the naval star.

What I was getting at above, is that it becomes easy for players to overbid their response, IF the attacking player sets out his initial forces.  Defenders who bid big in response can drive off attackers without having to fight, not really in the Clan way.  Giving players the option to match added forces, from those within jump range, would keep to the spirit of Clan bidding.

Either way, not to fussed, just something to think about.

OC: to clarify: the Foxes made the mistake already in declaring what they would field anyway in their first message. Normally the aggressor comes, states what he wants and what he has at his disposal. Then the defender states what he is fielding, then the aggressor can start internal bidding, or in this case, matching the defender.

So, the Hellions could have bid just some aero Clusters if you had told them your forces available (not engaging). Then you could have chosen an appropriate warship (or another answer).
(If the attacker would bid way too much (like for example, 3 Warships would defend and you still took all your ships you brought), that would have consequences for them in form of frown, scorn or even other retaliation in the Grand Council or by other Clans, Players here and almost everywhere are way too lazy, limited in time or else to play that out for realzies, myself included)

However, for prizes this big, it is not unheard of for defenders to bid everything they have, because losing their cache could prove a major weakening. Not just for the Clan itself but in the eyes of other Clans. This is just a major escalation of things to challenge for.

I never really played the Clans but IIRC the normal bidding process is as follows.

Attacking Clan:  I am after enclaves, GF factory, whatever they want is what they say.  That is followed by "what will you defend with?"  The defending Clan bids its defense forces.  Then the attacking clan bids the minimum it will take to win.

The bind the Foxes are in is my own silly fault, but I am looking at this from a game rules perspective.  Basically, a Clan can stymie any but the most major assaults by heavy counter-bidding, if the attacker provides force strengths as part of their challenge.

I think he is right and you played it the other way around.
