More on the Freeborn Bloodhouses.
« on: May 28, 2012, 04:15:08 AM »

The way a new Bloodname is selected has followed the decisions of the original two Freeborn Blood Founders.  Both Warriors chose their old family surname, with each following Blood Founder tracing their name back to an ancestor from the Exodus Fleet, thus honouring their legacy for all time.

I guess we're working under the assumption that the Exodus records survived the Civil Wars. Works for me, though I wonder if the Clans have a complete listing or would use a surname of a civilian who refused to join Nicholas.

Maybe "limit" the number of names to the listing of the 600 civilians added to the breeding program. Meaning, the warrior's bloodline proper might be from someone or somewhere else, but the surname will come from an honored name that did join Nicholas and help found the clans. Blends the needs of the new, while honoring the past.

OOC - I feel like the Clans would have a serious issue with adding a surname derived from a person who literally decided against Alexandr and following Nicholas. IF we're going to add surnames, do so in a way that doesn't acknowledge the perfidy of the traitors who didn't go on the Second Exodus. Their genes are still added to the program, but the Clans won't have to recognize the misdeeds of their forefathers - which is a big deal with the bloodline/codex obsessed Clans.

Why not go the same way as the true Bloodnames?

The founder of the house takes the name of their maternal mother which becomes the name of the house.

Only tracking one name is easier than a family name especially if loyalties is coming into it.  A candidate's mother would be a known quantity within the Clans far better than a "married" name.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Unless they come from freebirth civilian ranks. Not all freebirth warriors have trueborn parentage. That's an issue.

I'll just change it to those 1.25 million who upped and moved to Strana Mechty with old NK.  Gives plenty of wiggle room.

There ya go.

You might want to add some sort of addendum: Should a freebirth warrior be incapable of tracing his lineage back to one of the Strana Mechty colonists, he'd be forced to select one of their surnames for his new Bloodhouse.

Given the total number of names, that shouldn't be a problem.

Alternatively, you could just have any of these freebirth warriors selecting surnames from the Clans auxiliary force used to reconquer the Pentagon. These were all the soldiers and sailors that were not good enough to earn a coveted slot in the 803, but good enough to fight in Operation Klondike. I'm certain that number is far lower than 1.25 Million, but sufficiently important enough to be accorded a decent record.

Not too mention the fact that these soldiers were technically Clan Warriors to begin with.

Might just fit better with the story since these were warriors, and not civilians.

Thoughts?

Sounds reasonable.

Sounds reasonable.

And more logical in this Warrior society.
