As a thank you to readers, and as teasers for the upcoming Field Manuals, I'll post the write up for a single brigade from one FM. Each week a new FM will be showcased.

This first excerpt will be from Inner Sphere Supplemental, followed by one from The Clans: Volume II.

I'll take suggestions from fans for the brigade to be showcased from Field Manual: Hegemony Armed Forces in 2 weeks time. If there is no clear winner, the first nominated will be used.

The choices are:
  • Hegemony Guards
  • Alliance Regiments
  • Altairan Dragoons
  • Solarian Hussars
  • Luna Light Lancers
  • Terran Chasseurs
  • Independent Combat Regiments
  • Sol Corps
  • Northwind Corps
  • Terra Firma Corps
  • Sirian Corps
  • Ranger Corps

The following extract comes from Inner Sphere Supplemental, which covers events in the Inner Sphere from mid-3026, to December 3032. This small slice discusses some of the actions during the Skye Revolt.

Lighting the Fire
While Duke Lestrade had been intentionally vague about the rebellion—when it would start, who would participate, etc.—the HID did know it was going to begin soon. The Skye Rebellion began in earnest on 1 August 3028, when Dominic Callan and a cadre of Skye politicians, after citing a long list of supposed injustices, declared their independence from the Commonwealth. Soon, a number of Skye worlds joined their cause, but it wasn’t until the 4th, 10th, 17th, and 22nd Skye Rangers and the LCS Skye, a Stiletto-class Corvette, defected, that the full extent of the rebel’s reach was realized.

Within two weeks of their declaration of independence, the Federation of Skye was aflame in the fires of rebellion. However, despite a good initial showing of support on paper, the reality of the rebellion was quite different and readily apparent to the HID. Far from being universally popular, the truth was that the rebels represented only a fraction of the Isle’s population. Composed mainly of politicians, career military officers, and industrial concerns, the Free Skye camp was noticeable light on actual civilians. Despite being well armed and supplied, Free Skye needed to win the hearts and minds of the Skye people almost as much as the Commonwealth did.

Not ignorant to that fact either, Free Skye went on a strong offensive, winning some impressive early victories against isolated and outnumbered loyalist forces, which included the 1st and 2nd Skye Rangers. The Hegemony had little part to play in the rebellion’s first months once the last shipment of supplies left Terran space. That all changed in mid-3029.

By late July, Free Skye had suffered a string of stinging defeats at the hands of the LCAF, and their commander, Frederick Steiner. In December, the tide had seriously turned in favour of the loyalists and unless the strategic situation changed dramatically, the rebellion was likely to fail within six months. It was at this point that Duke Lestrade played his final card.

Using deep cover agents in the LIC loyal to the Free Skye cause, the Duke convinced the LCAF that a massive Free Skye force was organizing to strike the Commonwealth from an uninhabited system one jump inside the Terran Hegemony’s border. At roughly the same time, Lestrade offered similar information to the HID, even going so far as to suggest that this Free Skye force was being used to draw the Hegemony into the rebellion.

With relations between the Lyran Commonwealth and the Terran Hegemony at an all-time low since the start of the rebellion and tension along the border at an all-time high, the threat posed by the Free Skye taskforce was tremendous, and both sides dispatched assets to deal with the rebels. This was exactly the situation Lestrade was hoping for.

I am intrigued by the Luna Light Lancers or the L3. Certainly unique to have a moon unit in your setting.

As part of my campaign to keep you lot on the hook whilst we cook some books, here is how Kerensky's Lost Hope is mapped out. It will be about 2/3 the size of The Other Option, and be followed by what would probably be the last book in the series, tentatively called Revelations of Revival, covering the Clan invasion itself.

Essentially, The Other Option covers the Inner Sphere's pre-invasion shenanigans, and Kerensky's Lost Hope does the same for the Clans. The third book brings them all together, and then things get truly wicked.

Afternoon KUers.

Below is a tease from The Clans: Volume II. Hope you enjoy it.

Writing is rolling along, with The Fourth Succession War - An Introductory History already half written with FWLM now at about 80%. Proofing of all the FM's is underway as well from our proofing team.

Here is the updated table of voting on who to preview from FM: HAF. You still have a week to vote for your favorite.

  • Hegemony Guards [3 Vote]
  • Northwind Corps [3 Votes]
  • Ranger Corps [2 Votes]
  • Luna Light Lancers [2 Votes]
  • Terran Chasseurs [1 Vote]
  • Alliance Regiments
  • Altairan Dragoons
  • Solarian Hussars

The Clans: Volume II - Trial of Supplication
Volume I of our work on the Clans detailed the Trial of Supplication, the primary tool used to discipline wayward Clans and bring them back to the Honor Road. Our ongoing research has determined that there have been seventeen calls for Supplication since the Trial came into use, five of which have passed. This has equated to a call for Supplication little over one per decade, and Supplication occurring about twice to three times per Century. Therefore, whilst common enough to remain a threat within living memory for each Clan, it is a tool not often used, as it can backfire upon the accuser.

As the single most important Clan wide Trial, it is interesting to note that the implementation of Supplication was not set in stone for some forty years.  This stems from the fact that Supplication was originally an emergency measure, created quickly and with little debate.

The first use of Supplication was the famous Wolverine Supplication, a plot hatched by Sarah McEvedy and Andery Kerensky to save the Wolverines, one that was at first grudgingly supported by Nicholas Kerensky, but something he warmed to once he had the chance to remodel the Wolverines.  This original application had McEvedy invoke the Rite of Supplication, something that was not made clear to the other Clans until later, a fact that enraged the Wolverine’s enemies even more when they learned the implications.

The second Supplication, that of the Widowmakers, was far more structured, however, it was implemented in a rather haphazard way, due to the chaos of Nicholas Kerensky’s death.  However, the end result followed the intention of the Rite of Supplication, so little was said at the time regarding any irregularities in its undertaking.

However, following their return to status as a regular Clan, Clan Widowmaker petitioned the Grand Council and Loremaster Andery Kerensky to standardize the process of Supplication for any future events.

Twenty-six years later, Clan Mongoose would try to use the now properly codified Supplication rite against the Smoke Jaguars and Star Adders.  Khan Walter Martindale accused both Clans of open and un-Clanlike political collusion and demanded both face Supplication. The Clans' Loremaster Eloy Varga would hear none of the Mongoose Khan’s false accusation however, dismissing the charge as baseless according to Clan lore.

However, Khan Theodore Osis of the Smoke Jaguars, scenting the kill, immediately counter-charged Clan Mongoose for their un-Clanlike ways in attempting to use Clan Law to cover for their military failure.  Loremaster Varga, after consulting quietly with ilKhan Danforth, accepted the charge against Clan Mongoose.  In Clan eyes, the Adders and Jaguars were little more than allies of convenience, striking back at a shared aggressor.  However, Clan Mongoose was trying to use politics and Grand Council procedure to cover for their military failures, and this was not the first time that Clan Mongoose’s activities had raised the ire of the Grand Council.

With the Loremaster accepting the charge, the Grand Council went into recess for twenty-four hours, per the new code, to allow each Clan time to discuss the matter internally.  The Ebon Keshik took Khans Martindale and Knox into custody, pending the Grand Council’s decision.  Additionally, the Ebon Keshik, with assistance from the Katyusha Keshik, also put all members of Clan Mongoose in the city under temporary arrest.  This was to prevent word reaching the Mongoose enclaves before the vote had been taken.

The following day, debate was opened in the Grand Council, with the accuser and the accused being the first to speak.  Following this, any Khan could address the Grand Council on the matter, with Clan Mongoose given a final response, followed by the Smoke Jaguars as the accusers.  In the end, the vote was heavily against Clan Mongoose, with the matter now preceding to the Trial of Supplication itself.   The immediate Mongoose bid of two Galaxies and their fleet over Circe, saw fierce bidding from the other Clans reduce the attacking force from at potential eight Galaxies to three Smoke Jaguar Galaxies.  The defeat of Clan Mongoose on Circe saw them Supplicated.

Khans Martindale and Knox were then forced to step down, as ilKhan Danforth took personal control of the Clan and began mending its ways.  The Loremaster and most Galaxy Commanders, along with no small number of Star Colonels, were demoted and two years of internal trialling saw a new command echelon arise in the Clan.  At the end of the first two years of the Supplication, Clan Mongoose could Trial against other Clans, just as they these were again allowed to Trial against Clan Mongoose.  Eight years later, under ilKhan Ward, Clan Mongoose could vote again in the Grand Council, being accepted back into the mainstream of the Clans.

This format has not been deviated from since, with each Supplication call dealt with in the same manner.

And the winner is the ICR's!

Thanks for your votes and please enjoy your teaser from Field Manual: Hegemony Armed Forces.

INDEPENDENT COMBAT REGIMENTS
After having reorganized the Combat Brigade Groups in the wake of the Fourth Succession War, the High Command recognized a critical need for small, regiment-sized units capable of garrisoning many of the nation’s new colonies, but also as response teams when deployment of a full brigade was unnecessary. Patterned after the old SLDF Striker and Light Horse regiment-types, and drawing partly from the Regimental Combat Team championed by the Eridani Light Horse, the new Independent Combat Regiments, or ICRs would be formed in early 3030. In a notable change from standard HAF policy, every ICR is assigned integrated JumpShip transport—typically a pair of modified Tramp JumpShips—for maximum flexibility.

CONDITION
Named after five Hegemony worlds—one from each Terran province—the first ICR brigade formed was the Capolla Regulars. Designed as a generalist regiment, each unit has equal amounts of medium, heavy and assault BattleMechs with a preference for energy-based ’Mechs like the Royal Crab, Flashman and Royal Crockett. A regiment of mechanized infantry and aerospace fighter wing round out the regiment.

The second ICR brigade—the Thorin Regulars—is also the second “line” ICR brigade. Slightly lighter than a Capolla regiment, the Thorin units employ a regiment of light, medium and heavy ’Mechs to increase the unit’s mobility. Just like the Capolla Regulars, the Thorin regiments have a full regiment of mechanized infantry at their disposal.

Dieron regiments are the closest in construction to the SLDF’s Light Horse regiments. Composed entirely of light and medium BattleMechs, the Hussars are the among the fastest regiments in the HAF. Forgoing a slow infantry attachment, the Hussars deploy squadrons of light Trident and Spad aerospace fighters.

The Ko regiments are fully integrated combat groups of ten companies of ’Mechs, two battalions of conventional armor and four companies of mechanized infantry. While the average combat unit weight of each Ko regiment varies, most tend to fall in the medium range.

Deneb regiments are the assault troops of the ICRs, with an average BattleMech weight of seventy tons. Dominated by heavy and assault ’Mechs like the Warhammer, Shootist and Royal Highlander, the Deneb Regulars have massive firepower at their disposal. Two battalions of fast hovertanks and an aerospace wing round out their organization.
