My wife insisted on buying a Mac Mini last month - its about the only computer that will fit on the beautiful roll top desk in the living room - and after poking it with a stick for a while, its time to at least try to play the game before saving up to buy something to put in the basement that will.
I'm not quite but pretty close to computer illiterate, so I need some help. Somebody suggested 'boot camp' to allow me to run non-mac software, but I have questions.
Will I need to BUY a copy of W8 or W8.1 and keep it on the Mac's internal memory to go to the MWO website and start installing and updating?
Is Boot Camp free? How do I run it?
I won't have time to try anything until - maybe - Sunday night, but want to plan out the steps and work the kinks out so I can beg for a game night on the computer next weekend.

I wouldn't do that or rather I wouldn't do it that way (it is a bit more complex than just doing it that way).
But is MWO Windows only?

Apparently, yes. A quick search through their forum yields plenty of cases where people are reminded to use the FAQ and search functions, but a couple have responded.
So, what exactly does boot camp do, and why would I need it?

I didn't know about this software but it seems to be something to help you what I said wasn't easy.
Basically, it splits your hard drive, allows you to install Windows on the second one and asks you (usually on start) if you want to go with Mac OS or Windows.
However, I am not sure I would use Windows 8. I saw it on some computers and I find it strange and not really non touchscreen computer friendly (or at least buy 8.1 to have access to some improvements).

That's really weird. Thanks, but it sounds like I'll be buying a cheap laptop to play this.

What's weird? Windows 8?

That too. ;D
No, the split personality - "Half-Mac, half-PC. All machine!" I imagine Skynet would have a civil war.

It's not a split personality.
It is just you are asking it to book on a different OS. I did that a lot earlier on with the first Windows as I sometimes needed specific items loaded that were not compatible with Windows. I had a Windows boot and a specific boot.

So, where would I get a copy of windows 8.1, and for how much? Download? Will I be able to do that on a Mac?
-
You can run a partition and boot camp to run a Mac-stored version of Windows 8 on your HD. This might help..

Or, you can just use Parallels like the rest of us. ;D

Thanks.
Knightmare, could you walk me through installing it? First, do I need to buy this 'parallels' program? Do I need to buy anything else? Does it come with instructions on how to use it?
I just don't know enough to do this yet.
