Overview - Union Military Forces
« on: August 22, 2011, 06:56:17 AM »

Well, many of the translations are machine-work out of Google, rather than the proper context-sensitive interpretation you get from a human mind, but in the absence of such a translator, this semi-preliminary readout on the Union forces should be 'good enough' to give everyone a general overview of the Union military and draw at least some constructive criticism.  I hope.  :-\

My sincerest thanks to al103 for his invaluable contribution of many of the Russian translations - not to mention a Russian perspective! - to elements of this document and some of the Union military's organisational elements.  That said, in spite of his vehemence on certain points I am still tempted to keep all of the Union Divisions made up of Brigades, rather than have the Svobodans still clinging to the 20th-century Russian mentality that Divisions are made up of Regiments, and a Brigade is a 'small Division' rather than a 'big Regiment'.  After all, the Virginia War is set more than eight centuries after the Second Soviet Civil War!  ::)
Perhaps I'll borrow a trick from the Poms and make the component battalions 'Regiments' in terms of honours and titles.  That would let me keep both the hybridised system of rank-titles I've painstakingly worked out and my conscious contrast, in- and out-of-universe, between the GCC's 'pure' Regiments and the Allies' combined-arms Brigades.  Thoughts from the readers?  ???

And as always, if anyone out there would like to provide additional explicatory/exemplary artwork, or vectorise and generally clean-up the Paint.Net hatchet-jobs I'm currently using for rank-insignia and other elements, I'd be more than grateful for their assistance.  ;)

Looks really good, can't really complain.

I'm actually writing a Robotech fic, so can I use your uniforms and ranking as inspiration?

Interesting.
For insignias/logos, I can perhaps work a little on them.

Tell me what you want and I will see what I can do.

Just as long as I get attribution, preferably with a link back to this thread.  ;)  Fair warning, though: the Cosmoflot uniform is 'heavily inspired' by the OMNI/'Earth Forces' uniforms from Gundam SEED;D

As soon as I straighten out the ideas tumbling through my head, I'll let you know.  :D
At the moment, I'm working on converting the original files from .png (Paint.Net) to .svg (Inkscape), but it's a tedious process, and I'm not even sure if that process is achieving the desired results.  I'd probably have to set up a web-site or even a full wiki for the Virginia War to check on that, but I'm afraid it would suck too much of my mental energy away from the main project - which is supposed to be the damned fiction for this universe!  >:( ::)

How are you with art from scratch?  :-\  I've got a unit-logo in mind for the 4o Division de Fusileros Mechanismos: a scorpion pinned to the ground by a bayonet through the thickest, broadest part of its thorax, as seen from the scorpion's front-left and slightly above.  The scorpion's legs are splayed out flat, its tail is half-curled so that the point of the stinger is aimed directly upwards, and bug-blood is soaking into the ground under the scorpion and coats half the blade of the bayonet.  The bayonet is of this type, but comparison between its visible length and the scorpion's body implies that said scorpion's body is about the same length and mass as a fully-grown Welsh Corgi.  :o

First intent at the logo of the 4a Division de Fusilleros Mecanizados.

I know this is not what you asked for but it is a start.

Feel free to comment.

  Two things, really:

1] The angle is far too flat.  The attached is a very, very rough (stick-figure) representation of the perspective from which we should be seeing our unfortunate arachnid's final fate.  (The fact that it's also stick-figures tells you how well I do with art-from-scratch when left to my own devices.  ::))

2] In all honesty, a photo-manip or something like that would be all wrong for the sort of feel I'd like to invoke with this unit-logo.  I was hoping for something along the lines of a '50s or '60s cartoon.  Imagine this scorpion's predicament as the logical outcome of a Tom and Jerry sketch.  :D
