Nice update DC.

Thank you

Jumping into 3118 - starting with a big part from James Tanaga which sees a nation and a Clan continue their evolution together (I'll have fun with that later  >:D), another part later on in this update is heavily influence by the opening fiction of 3118.  Hope you all enjoy and my thanks too James Tanaga - additions like this are why this AU has kept going as long as it has the support I've had is awesome and anyone ever has an idea feel free to mention it.  There's another impressive fan created project which has previously been referenced and will be again later in this AU (more to come soon)

Fire Mandrill Border Incursion
Kaumberg Theatre, Alarion Province
Lyran Commonwealth
1st January 3118

At the stroke of midnight to inaugurate the New Year, a short HPG signal containing only one word, one name, was sent throughout the Rim Collection and into neighbouring nations. “Natasha.”  To some it was received with confusion to others it was a rallying cry. Upon receiving the signal, the Fire Mandrills and Rim Collection military and security forces struck numerous systems along the Collection-Lyran border acting out plans that had been made months in advance. Their immediate task was twofold: capture all systems within two jumps of the Collection’s vitally important Viborg Fleetyards; And to destroy any and all Fesnyng units along their border with the Lyran Commonwealth, while showcasing six new units; First, Second, Third, Fourth Rim Hussars, Fourth Rim Lancers, and Eighty-Fourth Assault Clusters.

The focal point of the attack was the ten Lyran systems within two jumps of Viborg.  Heavily supported by national militia forces and using the element of surprise to great effect, the Mandrills take all but two target worlds with seventy-two hours, largely meeting only token resistance from shocked or lacklustre militia forces.

On Halifax, the Lyran’s Second Fesnyng and Halifax Militia are caught flatfooted due to the New Year’s celebrations and most personnel are at home or not near to the main base, the Rim Collection border had been quiet recently.  Today Halifax was anything as quiet as the Thirty-first Rim Lancers destroys the largely piecemeal forces. For the remainder of the month, those members that had escaped the destruction of the base are methodically hunted down by the Thirty-first Rim Lancers assisting Rim Militia forces and the Mandrill Watch.  Those forces that surrender are briefly held for questioning before being released while all resistance is put down harshly.

Home to the largest militia concentration on the Lyran border, the Rim Collection deployed four clusters to Florida as it anticipated heavy resistance. A night-time orbital drop by the power armour assets of the Fourth Rim Guards Cluster effectively captured the bulk of the Florida Militia that were in Barracks. Unfortunately, large amounts of militia and Lyran national forces on leave on the planet melted into the local population and quickly allowed a guerrilla force to grow. The primary guerrilla threat would not be put down until the end of the month and finally cemented the Collection’s firm control over the planet but caused the deaths of nearly a thousand civilians.  Even with full control the planet’s pacification was far from guaranteed and continued to use extensive garrison forces to be kept under control, protests and riots are a frequent occurrence in several settlements.  Only the Mandrill’s refusal to use Jade Falcon or Smoke Jaguar-esque tactics saves the world from becoming another Turtle Bay.

New India was the other location where Lyran resistance was expected to be heavy. Again, the Mandrills deployed five clusters. Unfortunately, the surprising appearance of the LCS Thunder, a Hyperion-class Heavy Destroyer, destroys the escorting the York-class Carrier RCS Firestorm before the heavy aerospace and dropship assets of the Rim Collection finally force the battered warship to withdraw from the system and allowing the Rim Collection’s Thirty-second Rim Lancers, Fourth Rim Assault, Fourth Rim Rangers, Tenth Rim Militia, and Second Rim Hussars to land on the planet. In a grueling battle that lasts for most of the month, Archonette Kathy Parks leads the newly activated Stolz Regiment, Fourth Schnelle Kraft, and Second Buena Guards in a spirited defence of the world. Her death during the fighting eventually forced the Lyrans off world, with the survivors rolled into the Second Buena Guards LCT. Mandrill losses are equally severe, with the destruction of the Thirty-second Rim Lancers, Fourth Rim Rangers, and Tenth Rim Militia Clusters. Survivors are absorbed into the remaining two clusters.  Like Florida the resistance movements on New India and popular unrest will continue to take up Mandrill resources for months.

Outside the focal area, the Collection’s strike at Kaumberg, Alekseyvka, and Etiler; the former the theatre capital and the latter two home of other primary militia regimental combat teams within the theatre. At Kaumberg, the recent arrival of the Eleventh Commonwealth Guards RCT, together with the Kaumberg Militia and the First Fesnyng, fight a concentrated and protracted defensive campaign against the Rim Collection’s Smoke Keshik, First Rim Battle, Twenty-first Rim Battle, First Rim Rangers, Four-hundred-and-seventeenth Rim Sentinels, and First and Seventh Rim Militia Clusters. Both sides take heavy casualties and neither are able to gain the advantage.

At Alekseyvka, the Sixth Rim Guards and Twelfth Rim Lancers Clusters quickly destroy the defending Alekseyvka Militia and Third Fesnyng due to the festivities. By the end of the month, however, it becomes clear survivors have already begun an effective guerrilla campaign, intent on making the Collection’s lives miserable as they begin a scorched earth campaign to destroy anything remotely useful to the Lyran military. The Rim Collection forces withdraw from the system at the end of the month having caused enough damage to the world to use up a disproportionate amount of resources compared to the wealth of the world.

At Etiler, the Lyran’ Third Triumvirate LCT fights off a raid in force by the Nineteenth Striker and newly formed Fourth Rim Lancers Clusters, but not before the Rim Collection forces destroy the vitally important weapons and supply deport on the world.

At the close of the month, with these victories, President Redburn announces the reformation of the Rim Collection and Clan Fire Mandrill into the Mandrill Collective while he remains in charge of the nation there is little question about the Fire Mandrill influence on the nation. The Lyrans take stock of their losses and begin to form a counter force together with SLDF forces. Altogether, the Lyrans have lost all ten focal targets and Kaumberg is in danger of capture.

High Council Chambers
Isle of Albion, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
10th January 3118

In the carnivorous and tradition chambers of the High Council of New Avalon, and the Federated Suns, House Leader Imarra Sortek stood ready to address the formation.  “Lords and Ladies of New Avalon, I am House Leader Imarra Sortek the leader of Warrior House Sortek.  Three years ago, my people were brought to the Federated Suns by a freak accident from another universe, from another nation, with no way back we have dedicated our lives to this nation.”  She said speaking clearly, she had chosen to wear a standard AFFS uniform with no decorations but the insignia of Warrior House Sortek on the left breast the insignia was similar to the emblem of House Sortek which featured an artist’s impression of the Crossroads Prairie on New Avalon where the house had gained its first Barony.  Warrior House Sortek added a pair of crossed swords behind the image all set upon a shield, they had chosen to keep the insignia removing only the gold colouring of the Capellan state on the swords since coming to the Federated Suns.  “Our Warrior House stands guarding the world of Marduk, where we have built a home, the good grace of House Davion and this Council gifted a portion of this world to my people giving us a permanent home and giving you a force of warriors who were fanatically prepared to defend it.  An arrangement I think everyone here is happy with?”  She asked leaving the question in the air.

No-one immediately spoke so Imarra Sortek continued “I thought so.”  She answered her own question “Warrior House Imarra finds this arrangement agreeable and will continue to guard the Draconis Combine border, but we will not continue as Warrior House Sortek.”  She said “the title Warrior House brings an image which is not popular in this realm, but we will not give up our name.”  She said “instead we will adopt a name more closely related to our current home and become the Order of Sortek.”  She said announcing the change as she spoke, she saw members of the Sortek family who looked uncomfortable by her announcement but she had felt it was important for the leadership of the Federated Suns to know about these changes and raise the profile of her people.  The Order of Sortek defended a world on the border of a large enemy state, they needed all the support they could gather.  The unit was supported by a Household Guard which while not directly attached to the Order’s forces when deployed did regularly exercise with the both the Order’s forces and the planetary militia.  Imarra Sortek’s desire was to see the Household Guard merged with the Order’s forces but they needed time and training before they were ready for that leap and her warriors needed time to accept them as equals.

Raid
Kassandra’s Memory, Magistracy of Canopus
Periphery
21st January 3118

A particle cannons slammed into Schuyler McCoy’s Archer shattering armour plate McCoy twisted the Archer’s torso to track the enemy Ebony BattleMech ran past.  The Malcontents had been attacked, well after they had begun raiding Kassandra’s Memory, the group of Ebony BattleMechs had engaged them and already knocked down two of the Malcontents’ BattleMechs.  The stealth armour made the Ebony’s hard to track but so far, he had tracked down eight of the enemy Mechs who were harassing them while missile equipped armour peppered their position.

“We need to break out of this before we take some serious damage!”  He called out “everyone wheel to the right and pull.”  He ordered to his left Tom Ayrton twisted his Highlander and began to move right, Schuyler pivoted his Mech and tried to follow the heavier Highlander.  Behind him Amanda Cavalcanti’s Cataphract but it didn’t complete the move as two snub-nosed particle cannons targeted the Heavy Mech’s left leg blowing out the knee actuator.  The seventy-ton BattleMech stumbled and fell with a crash.

“Frack!” She called out stumbling about trying to get the Mech back up before she could missiles slammed into its back and two more particle cannons quickly followed “Gyros hit, this thing is toast.”

“Jack, get one of your tanks in here we need an extraction!”  He called out as more missiles slammed into Amanda’s downed BattleMech.

“Negative, negative, don’t do it we’re already taking losses pull the hell out!”  She called out as Schuyler brought the Hatchet down on one of the Ebony BattleMechs tearing it in half the hatchet tore down through the shoulder tearing off the arm, down through the torso and in one strike tore off the leg too.  “I can’t make it, get out of here!”

“Not a chance in hell!”  He said opening fire with the Archer’s short-range missiles peppering another of the Ebonys crippling the twenty-five-ton BattleMech.  “We can hold!”

“Not long enough!”  She replied as an autocannon barrage tore across the side of the Archer one of them striking the cockpit.  “Get out of here!”  She pleaded with him as particle cannon fire tore across Ayrton’s Highlander.

“We’re coming back!”

“Just go” she said as the enemy units were closing in, the Malcontents had taken eight Mechs and four Prime Movers to the planet but they had now lost three of their Mechs and the MechWarriors.

“Move towards the DropShip, fall back!”  He called out seeing an entire company of armour moving in to support the remaining BattleMechs and an additional lance of Heavy Mechs also appearing in the distance.  “Disappear before they have a chance to track us.”  He said glancing at the downed Cataphract seeing it laying immobile as two tanks approached it.  “We’re coming back, I love you.”  He said continuing to fall back blasting at the enemy Mechs with his particle cannon, Tom Ayrton continued to fire his BattleMech’s gauss rifle as the unit fell back into the woods.
Two hours later after a game of cat and mouse the DropShip blasted off the surface of the planet with the Malcontents BattleMechs onboard but it had left behind Schyler McCoy and several of his MechWarriors who planned on rescuing Amanda Cavalcanti and any of the other MechWarriors who had fallen and survived.

Trials of Possession
Crucis March, Federated Suns
25th January 3118

In the continuing tit-for-tat Trials of Possession being waged between Clan Nova Cat and the Federated Suns Clan Nova Cat seize possession of Symsonia in the Minnette PDZ of the Crucis March.  During the Trial Clan Nova Cat debut their newest OmniMech the Shadow Cat III.  This new OmniMech based on the original OmniMech features an updated chassis and configurations using the newest technology, the Mech’s fixed jump jets have also been removed and replaced with pod mountable variants.  The new design takes the defenders by surprise.

In retaliation for the continued Nova Cat trials but the strong defence around the so-called Crofton Occupation Zone, which was the name the Federated Suns had given the region of worlds the Nova Cats had taken from the Federated Suns in recent Trials of Possession, had made the Federated Suns look elsewhere to try and curtail the Clan’s ambitions.  As a result, the Federated Suns target the far side of the Nova Cat’s Den in a series of attacks which sees Gebo, Ivaldi, Mersey and Laskarid all taken by the Federated Suns in rapid Trials of Possession.

The leadership of the Federated Suns believe that these victories will control the Nova Cats ambitions and make them draw back due to the fear of total war but they actually do the opposite.  The actions of the succession state towards the Clan show them that the Federated Suns not only respects the Trials of Possession but they are supporting the Nova Cat’s continued Trials as the two cultures take completely different approaches to combat and territorial changes.  Even after almost seventy years of co-existence the Inner Sphere and Clans continued to have stark ideological differences.

Liberation
Kaumberg, Kaumberg Theatre
Alarion Province, Lyran Commonwealth
28th January 3118

The retreat from Kaumberg was in full swing as Rim Collective forces streamed from the surface heading for JumpShips which waited at a pirate point.  The retreat wasn’t being completely uncontested as aerospace fighters from Kaumberg harried them at every turn but the fighters were not what was concerning for the periphery nation’s forces as two Lyran Commonwealth WarShips were bearing down on their position.  With an invasion force in retreat conventional wisdom would have been to allow the Rim Collective’s forces to retreat but the Lyrans had no intention of allowing them to leave without a fight and they had taken the typical Lyran approach to an issue.  Charging at their fastest acceleration rate the LCS Peter Steiner-Davion, an Indefatigable-class Battleship, and the LCS Błyskawica, a Nightlord-class Battleship, surrounded by dozens of assault DropShips and aerospace fighters were approaching.  These two ships were the heaviest in the Lyran Navy and were akin to taking a hammer to crack an egg.

The Rim Collective vessel RCS Rim Collection, one of their newest Warrior-class Battle-cruisers, broke from the retreating formation first arcing to port as the two Lyran WarShips approached to weapons range.  The ship’s manoeuvre allowed the nine hundred-and-twenty thousand tonne WarShip to engage the incoming Lyran vessels with its broadside weapons array of Naval autocannons, missiles and lasers.  The weapons were concentrated on the closer LCS Peter Steiner-Davion but the 1.8 million tonne Battleship’s heavy armour was far too thick for the ship to be concerned with a single volley from the heavier of the two Rim Collective vessels.

The Lyran return volley was devastating naval grade heavy particle cannons, lasers and gauss rifles fired by both pursuing vessels the initial gauss rifle slots slammed into the front port side of the Battle-cruiser shattering armour and a weapon’s position but not penetrating the armour.  Moments later the particle cannons followed burning down the side of the ship hitting multiple parts of the ship causing more damage.  While the naval particle cannons speared into the middle of the ship penetrating the armour there causing internal damage.

The damage caused against the Warrior caused the Battle-cruiser to list slightly indicating that a control thruster had been hit but that didn’t stop the ship returning fire on the two closing WarShips causing more damage to the Peter Steiner-Davion but still failing to penetrate the armour.  The two Lyran WarShips split their approach with the Warrior damaged and clearly having issues manoeuvring the Peter Steiner-Davion moved under the Błyskawica turning to port as it moved to match the Warrior’s course while the Nightlord-class Blyskawica charged forwards still driving on the retreating Rim Collection forces.

Because they had split up the Rim Collective’s Warrior-class Battle-cruiser was bracketed by the two ships while the vessel tried to defend itself firing another broadside of weapons into the broadside of the Peter Steiner-Davion the Indefatigable-class Battleship returned in kind engaging with a full broadside of its own penetrating the ship’s armour in several place.  At the same time the Blyskawica opened fire on the rear of the ship all but obliterating the vessels engine array.  The ruined hulk of a WarShip continued on its course now unable to manoeuvre and with multiple compartments open to space or filled with internal fires.

With the Battle-cruiser disabled the Blyskawica continued to charge forwards in pursuit of the Rim Collective force intent on wiping out the invasion force.  Ahead of the Nightlord the second WarShip which had been escorting the Rim Collective force the RCS Firestorm, a York-class Destroyer/Carrier, turned to engage the Nightlord along with its aerospace fighters.  The Firestorm had one chance of stopping the Blyskawica and the captain took that option setting a collision course with the larger vessel.  The captain of the Blyskawica wasn’t ready to commit suicide and continue on a collision course and instead turned to starboard exposing its broadside to the incoming Rim Collective WarShip.  Opening fire, the weapons of the Nightlord sliced through the Firestorm shredding its lighter armour with enough firepower to destroy a WarShip twice its size.  Some of the firepower tore several aerospace fighters from the same area while the Lyran aerospace fighters engaged the rest.  The Firestorm’s actions caused no damage to a single Lyran asset but they accomplished their mission forcing the Blyskawica to change course which had delayed its attack on the Rim Collective’s retreating forces allowing the DropShips to reach their JumpShips and escape the system.

---

While the WarShips fought in space around Kaumberg troop DropShips landed on the planet to ensure that the Rim Collective’s forces had retreated from the planet.  While the LCAF reinforcements spread across the planet’s island chains a heavily armed convoy moved into the capital city Stuttgart heading to the seat of power on the planet the House of Lords.  Once there with the colony surrounded by Battle Armoured troopers made up of both the Lyran Royal Guards and the Royal Black Watch of the Star League Defence Force Lyran Archon, and current First Lord, Jessica Steiner headed into the building.

Inside the House of Lords was a beautiful architecturally Germanic-styled building which had been built soon after the planet’s colonisation centuries before.  Inside Archonette Erich Sheridan stood waiting for her.  Erich Sheridan was approaching one hundred years old but he appeared to be quite healthy his full head of hair was entirely grey now having lost its dark colour, only his goatee maintained a hint of colour.  He wore a dark business suite which had been made along military lines “Archon, welcome home” he said greeting her referencing the Barony which the world had gifted to House Steiner when the world was colonized.  “I could have come to your residence.”  He offered House Steiner maintained a home on the world which was kept in pristine condition despite its rare usage.

“I wanted to speak to you quickly and ensure the situation on Kaumberg got my immediate attention.  What is the situation?”

“Archon, my forces held them at bay until your forces entered the system.  When it was clear that you had a superior force, they began to withdraw, my people did not have the firepower to counter them.”  He said glancing over the Archon’s shoulder as another woman in LCAF uniform Erich Sheridan immediately recognised her “General Varnay” he said welcoming Kelly Varnay to the conversation.  While she had been born to the line that betrayed House Davion and tried to eliminate it from the Federated Suns Kelly Varnay had proven over the last decade and a half of service, she was loyal to House Steiner.

“Archonette Varnay” Archon Jessica Steiner said correcting him slightly

“Congratulations” he said seeing Kelly’s face twist slightly “maybe?”

“I’m an officer not a politician” she grumbled; she hadn’t wanted the position but Archon Steiner believed in the idea.

“You can be so more” the Archon said to the other woman, Erich Sheridan watched quietly as the discussion played out Kelly Varnay was ten years older than the Archon but it was clear who was in command.

“Archon, I think this is an inspired choice General… pardon me, Archonette Varnay’s Fesnyng and Schnelle forces have revolutionised our defences along the periphery border.  Her vision goes to further reinforce ideas do not always have to come from up high to succeed.  Of course, we need Tharkad’s support and the support of the Navy but Skye has proven that an autonomous region can succeed against the enemies that threaten out realm while we remain loyal to House Steiner.”

“The Triad and nobility on Tharkad and Carlisle do not agree” Archon Steiner said “despite Skye’s successes and the lack of rebellions in recent years they believe we are welcoming the balkanisation of the Lyran nation.”  She continued raising her hand to silent his protests “I have decided to continue the experiment, with one simple caveat which I want you to both understand.”  She said glancing between them “should Kaumberg or Buena feel the need to go it alone and break with the covenant we will make here I will bring destruction down on your heads that you have never experienced.  The Lyran people stand together or they do not stand.”

“I understand Archon” Kelly Varnay said immediately she had been tasked with sorting out Buena and revolutionising the fighting forces in that Theatre while Sheridan would be left to continue to defend Kaumberg.  She already wanted to expand the Fesnyng and Schnelle forces debuted in the Kaumberg Theatre to Buena intent on making the defenders robust and mobile.

“Of course, Archon Steiner, we will serve you as all other Province lords do in the service of House Steiner.” He said immediately showing where he believed the Archonette model should stand on a level par with the Provincial leaders on Alarion, Skye and Halfway.  “We will turn back the aggressors on our borders.”

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Infiltration
Forward Operating Base
Kassandra’s Memory, Magistracy of Canopus
1st February 3118

It had taken Schuyler McCoy and his dismounted MechWarriors four days to walk to the forward operating base occupied by Magistracy of Canopus troops that they believed to be holding the three lost Malcontents MechWarriors.  None of the four MechWarriors were commandos but they had camouflage gear and rifles taken from their Mechs before they abandoned them.  Kassandra’s Memory was a warm world with long days and a lack of weather but there was plenty of shrubs for them to use as concealment.  McCoy had deployed them around the facility and they’d spent most of the last week watching the temporary base and the movement of the troops now they were back together.

   “What have we seen?”

“They are packing up the eastern flank, they must not be expecting anyone to cause trouble as they’ve taken apart some of the fortifications the troops are down to their hand weapons.  There is still a lot more of them than us boss, it’s easier without the fixed weapons but a frontal assault is still out of the question.”

“Agreed, thanks Tom” he said the other MechWarrior was nearly ten years older than Schuyler, and would be fifty next year but thanks to modern medicine he was barely showing it only with some grey on the hairs on the side of his dead, they had known each other for years and Schuyler considered him to be his right hand in most matters.

“They are trying to repair the Cataphract” Faris Scherwiz naming Amanda Cavalcanti’s BattleMech “you can see it from the western side they have it standing in a temporary repair harness.”

“While it would be nice to salvage it, I wouldn’t call it a priority.  Have they moved it?”

“Not on its own” Faris confirmed “they lifted it with cranes.”

“Which brings us to what I saw” Derek Lenihan said, “Schuyler these guys have Ebony BattleMechs and the patches that suggest they are Ebon Magistrate forces but I’m not sure if they are.”  He suggested he was the youngest of the group just a couple of years short of his fortieth birthday but he’d seen plenty combat so they all listened “I saw some of their training drills in the court yard and runs, their sergeant was a lot harsher than you’d expect with an elite unit.  He had them running full drills around the whole facility perimeter with their full kit in the blazing sun.”

“Play hard, fight easy” Tom Ayrton suggested “they have the equipment that suggests they are, but maybe this is a training mission or some sort of graduation mission.  Giving them some practical experience.”

“Why would you take new recruits into an elite unit, that doesn’t make sense” Schuyler McCoy noted “maybe they were sent here to the back of nowhere to fly the flag keep the locals in check?  These guys are training but whomever sent them didn’t want anyone interfering?  So, they dressed them up as special forces”

“They did a good job if that’s the case those Ebonys are front line BattleMechs.”

“Indeed, so what do they have?  We know they started with eight Ebony BattleMechs, a minimum of a dozen vehicles and a heavier lance but I’ve saw the heavier lance leave yesterday and it hasn’t returned and the at least half of the vehicles are gone.”

“I think we’re down to five combat vehicles one of them is an APC, the others are support Mechs.  We destroyed five of the Ebonys all three that remained have been under repair for the last few days, they are probably functional or close to it.”

“There’s a minimum of three guards at the guard posts I’ve seen, sometimes as many as six during a shift change over” the others nodded suggesting they had seen something similar.”  That suggests to me that they’ve got a minimum of twenty-four infantry troopers and an upwards figure of ninety-six.”  Tom Ayrton suggested twenty-four would give them a two-shift rotation, the upper figure would give them a four-shift rotation.

“I think it’s only two shifts” Faris said seeing the looks from the other three “a girl notices when the same guys are in a post, they have the same habits.”

“It would go with only one APC and the deconstruction work; they must be preparing to move out.”  Derek noted “if they move out, we can’t take on the mobilized convoy.”

“No, I agree, we are running out of time” Schuyler agreed “we need to hit them in the next day or two.  Any sightings of our people?”

“I saw Amanda yesterday walking in circles in the exercise yard.  She didn’t look badly beat up and they at least clothed her.”  Faris said “when she was finished, she was taken to the south side into that complex of tents and fortifications that are there.”

“We can’t take them on just the four of us, a direct assault we won’t have a chance, even having an idea where our people are.” Tom Ayrton cautioned

“We’re not going to hit them directly.”  Schuyler said “we’re going to use their work against them.”  He said “I’ve seen vehicles arrive the last few days Prime Movers and other support vehicles some of them taken in equipment.  They are probably here to help with the removal of the base.”  He said “tomorrow we’re going to walk off the road and watch for the next group to come through, we’ll find a choke point and ambush one of the vehicles then use that to get in.” he suggested “once inside I’m going to go for the Cataphract.  My codes and patterns should still be stored in its memory bank, if they’ve cleared it, I’ll use the back-up code.  You three will find our people and get back to the vehicle.  Then when the time is right, I’ll surprise them, if I can take out the remaining Ebonys then you may all have a chance of escape.”

“If you can’t we’re all dead”

“No pressure, thanks Tom, I’ll do what’s needed.”

---

The four of them walked nearly four kilometres from the base following the roads finding a crossroads with a fuel station and shop.  There were a few civilian vehicles parked not knowing where the vehicles would turn at the crossroads, they had no choice but to wait.  They didn’t need to wait long within an hour two Prime Movers had arrived and the four crewmen filled their vehicles with fuel and used the facilities at the civilian shop.  This far into the periphery there was little observance of protocol.  “If they want to break the rules we may as well male them pay for it.”  Schuyler said “we don’t kill anyone unless we have to.”

Moving quickly down towards shop Schuyler pointed at the two vehicles “Faris, Tom secure those vehicles.  Derek with me, quick and quiet!”  He called out the two of them half fast walked half ran towards the shop.  The shop was like a thousand others which had been seen for over a century in human existence on hundreds of worlds it was filled with fast foods and other convenience goods which travelers would buy.  Schuyler looked down one of the two aisles and saw two of the troopers hunched over a machine playing some form of two-dimensional game, Schuyler raised two fingers towards Derek who nodded and stepped past walking past the counter where a dark-skinned middle-aged man dressed in a white t-shirt and well-worn jeans stood looking nervous.  Derek looked at him as he passed and shook his head then glanced at Schuyler and raised two fingers of his own indicating he’d seen the other two.  In the end aisle stood the final two guards who were huddled over looking at some pornographic magazines laughing despite all of the advances that humanity had made, and all the light years they had traveled some impulses never died.  Schuyler and Derek looked at each other one more time and raised their weapons.

“Hands in the air!”  Both shouted advancing on the two men their rifles pointed at them “do nothing and you don’t die today.”  The four men had no choice and raised their arms away from their weapons.

---

An hour later they were back on the road again the shop owner had been convinced to lock the four ambushed troopers in his basement minus their uniforms.  Schuyler and Derek had put on a show for the shop owner by aiming their weapons at him making it look like they’d forced him to contain the four men.

The two Prime Movers were allowed into the fire base with the Malcontents troops showing their papers at the gate the guards waving them through and directing them to a corner lot of the base.  Immediately the base inhabitants began to load the two vehicles “we’re not going to have a lot of time, let’s get some equipment make it like we’re helping out then quietly disappear.”  He ordered his three lance mates they moved and gathered some equipment helping the base staff load equipment onto the Prime Mover as they did the others returned for more equipment instead of gathering more equipment, they disappeared into the tent city which made up quarters for most of the base personnel.

Schuyler McCoy headed off to the right of the others cutting between the tents until he could see the maintenance cradles for the Cataphract and the four remaining Ebony BattleMechs, it appeared the salvage crew had been able to repair one of the Mechs damaged during the battle with the Malcontents.  While it still had some armour damage the Cataphract looked mostly operational, he hoped it wasn’t just for show.  McCoy wore a Magistracy uniform and decided to try and make it look like he belonged slinging the rifle over his shoulder he walked over to a Tech’s table and glanced over some of the paperwork and notes left, from what he could make out basic repairs to the gyro had been completed and it was ready for a test run.

“Who are you?  What are you doing here?” someone asked off to his right-hand side Schuyler knew that his disguise would only pass so far and decided to take no chances spinning on the spot he brought the laser rifle down off his shoulder and pulled the trigger.  The laser blast caught the older man, who was likely one of the leading techs on the Mech in the chest and he went down in a heap.  Schuyler looked at the man for a moment then snapped out of it and reached for his radio on his belt clicking the transmit button three times to inform the others he’d made contact with the enemy.  He then grabbed the tech and dragged him under the tech table placing boxes in front of the body to conceal it, beside the Mech cradle he found a coolant vest and pulled it on over his coveralls before beginning his climb up the Mech.  He found the Cataphract’s cockpit was open and climbed onboard the seventy-ton BattleMech it was almost exactly like the last time he had been inside the Mech he reached behind the main computer screen and flicked a few of the controls there hoping the Canopian techs hadn’t questioned their purpose.  He then reached up and to the side finding Amanda’s neuralhelmet pulling it down over his head he smelled sweat but also her scent.  As reached over and began to bring the Mech online, as he did, he connected the coolant vest to the Mech’s systems the vest would keep him alive if the Mech got into a fight.

“Schuyler… the movers are gone we’re coming to you” Amanda’s voice crackled over the communication frequencies.

For a moment he was stunned she was alive, let alone on the radio “Amanda what do you mean?”

“The Prime Movers pulled out; another crew must be driving them in tandem with the one we replaced.  We’re coming to you cover the Mechs.”

“The Mechs… oh frack!”  Schuyler cursed he glanced at the BattleMech’s computer and noticed that the fiddling he’d done with the computer had swapped it over to his patterns and the neuralhelmet had recognised him.  While the Cataphract was battlefield salvage like all of the Malcontents Mechs it technically belonged to Schuyler McCoy and so he had the techs load his neural patterns on to its systems.  Normally they’d sit in the background and make no difference but today he needed the controls.  “Time to cause some noise” he said grabbing the controls forcing the Cataphract into action.

The seventy-ton BattleMech stepped forwards its arms flailing out smashing the maintenance cradle to pieces in one move.  He then lined up the torso mounted autocannon and fired a salvo of LB-X Cluster munitions straight into a communications dish shattering it blowing it into hundreds of pieces.  He twisted the torso and fired a particle projection cannon shot into a parked LRM carrier blowing the lightly armoured support vehicle to pieces.

Small arms fire exploded all over the vehicle with the occasional high explosive shot grenade launcher or short-range missile added into the mix for a fully operational heavy Mech they were of little threat but with the damage the Cataphract had already taken Schuyler didn’t know how much more it could take.  “Status!” he called into his handheld radio not trusting the inbuilt radio on the Cataphract.

“We’re boarding the Mechs we’ve got a group of infantry closing from the east, we could use some cover!”  Derek called out twisting the Cataphract’s torso Schuyler laid down a volley of fire from all four of the medium pulse lasers breaking up the infantry formation.  He side-stepped the Mech to the right and laid down some more fire cutting down dozens of troopers’ missiles and small arms fire continued to hit the Mech then a flight of long-range missiles slammed into the Mech from another vehicle one of the crews had somehow got online.  Schuyler hit the vehicle with an autocannon round but didn’t disable the vehicle which began to move launching more missiles.  More than half of the missiles missed their target but nearly a dozen still slammed into the Cataphract.

“I can’t take much more of this… guys” he said firing the particle cannon at the active vehicle missing his shot completely.  Moments later another particle cannon shot fired this time from one of the Ebony BattleMechs.

“I can’t believe we’re doing this!”  Tom Ayrton shouted as the twenty-five-ton BattleMech ran into combat its particle cannon blazing at the missile carrier.  The fast-moving Mech was too quick to be targeted by the tank and as he ran behind it firing the particle cannon shot into the tanks back before following it up with a kick against one of the vehicle’s tracks disabling it.  The turret began to track but Schuyler finished off its fight with another autocannon salvo.  “We must be the only ones who can turn a jail break into a heist, what the hell were we thinking.”

“No idea” Schuyler said twisting his Mech around cutting down more infantry with the pulse lasers as he saw another of the Ebony Mechs come online.  None of them had anti-infantry weapons but their size alone was intimidating to most MechWarriors.  A third Ebony stepped forward.

“I’ve just about got this thing going…” Derek Lenihan said before Amanda broke in.

“Derek on your back!” She shouted into the radio but it was too late suddenly there was a large explosion from the back of the Ebony.  The explosion exploded forwards breaching the cockpit’s armoured doors and blowing through the front of the light BattleMech instantly killing Lenihan, there was no point even calling to him as the headless BattleMech fell forwards to the ground.  “Oh my god…”

“There’s nothing we can do, let’s get out of here before they get anything else going, cut to the east as soon as we leave the base we don’t stop until sundown.”  Schuyler ordered looking at the downed BattleMech one more time “sorry Derek” he whispered as the four operational Ebony BattleMechs ran clear of the base all four stopped outside the base and turned firing their particle cannons into the base covering Schuyler’s retreat flattening many of the remaining structures.

All five BattleMechs then ran for their lives in silence both because of the shock at Derek’s death and to keep their radio traffic to a minimum hoping that would make them harder to detect, the four Ebonys had stealth armour but the Cataphract would stand out if a powerful enough sensor suite was turned towards it.  They ran throughout the day secreting themselves in a cave where they could rest and gather their thoughts after the events of the day.  Schuyler discovered that Amanda had been the only survivor with both of his other MechWarriors killed in the initial battle and now Derek was dead as well.  It appeared that every effort he made to defend Whittington either ended up with his people being killed at home or away.  The group stayed hidden for nearly a week on Kassandra’s Memory hiding from the Magistracy of Canopus troops before finally escaping from the world heading for home their newly captured BattleMechs in all.

Clan conflict
District of Regulus, Free Worlds League
9th February 3118

While there was little evidence solid proof to show that the Clans were coordinating their activities by agreement there was little question when it came to their actions.  While the Wolves were struggling to make an impact on the Star League Protectorate the current change in targets had taken the Free Worlds League by surprise and within days Ariel, Asellus Australis, Asellus Borealis, Gallatin and Autumn Wind had all fallen to a series of lightning assaults by Assault Clusters as the Wolves attempted to isolate Marik and the systems near it.

For years the Clan border had felt so far away for so long but today they had arrived on the world of Sophie’s World.  Now sitting in the cockpit of his ZU-G60 Anzu BattleMech twenty-one-year-old Caden Cameron-Jones waited nervously as the Wolves approached.  The Anzu’s sensors pinged moments later “here they come!”  He called out stepping the sixty-ton BattleMech forwards.  “Give them hell!”  He said pulling the trigger for the long-range missile launcher and particle cannon sending ten missiles and a particle beam towards the enemy a Clan Wolf Thirty-fourth Champions Cluster Linebacker OmniMech.  Less than half of the LRMs hit the sixty-five-ton Linebacker while the particle cannon missed the hunched over OmniMech completely.

On the torso of the OmniMech a hatch opened and five long range missiles fired in return towards the Anzu while both arms fired lightning bolts at the BattleMech.  The particle cannons were about three times as devastating as the one the Anzu carried and they fired at greater range.  Fortunately for Caden Cameron-Jones only one of the particle cannons struck catching the Anzu high in the chest while the other fizzled out overhead, the five missiles fired by the Linebacker missed completely tearing up the ground beside the BattleMech.

Caden launched his forwards into a run launching more missiles and another particle cannon shot at the Linebacker, the Clan Mech dodged out of the way of the particle cannon shot while the missiles caused minimal damage.  Caden had prepared for the dodge however and the Linebacker dodged straight into an autocannon volley which walked its way across the heavy OmniMech’s torso.  Missiles and more particle cannon shots returned fire against the Anzu both slammed into the Anzu high on the torso the first vaporising armour there the second came in even higher slamming into the charging Anzu’s cockpit.

The impact of the oversized extended range particle cannon against the Anzu’s cockpit was devastating, the armour there was melted away in seconds while the combined kinetic force and heat of the man-made lightning cannon burned though the cockpit behind it seconds later killing Caden Cameron-Jones instantly.  The command less Anzu staggered forwards before falling half burying itself in the light sand of Sophie’s World’s surface. Duke Caden Cameron-Jones was the first person to die on the world but he wasn’t the last for hours the Wolves and Regulan troops engaged each other before finally the Free Worlds League troops gained the upper hand driving the Clansmen from the world but the damage was done and the heir to the District of Regulus was dead.

Aftermath, Andrea Moreira Firebase
Tarncredi IV, Tarncredi IV PDZ
Draconis March, Federated Suns
11th February 3118

In the history of Tarncredi IV Andrea Moreira was a name as well known as the planetary dukes during the Davion Civil War Moreira had been a minor noble woman who had taken up arms to join Alexander Davion’s forces and fought in the final battles for control over Tarncredi IV and to end the Civil War.  The firebase occupied by the victors of the most recent battle were a command which while in the service of House Davion were currently working without command authority Leftenant Laure Bieganski of the Order of Sortek had come to Tarncredi IV to assist in the defence of the system fighting against a Clan Snow Raven raid.

Now she and the two MechWarriors of the lance were repairing their three BattleMechs.  Unfortunately, MechWarrior Jochen Stuppacher had been killed in the fighting and his Catapult BattleMech was nothing but a wreck.  As thanks for their assistance in the Trial the commander of the First Dragonlords Regiment had authorised the surviving MechWarriors to each select a single piece of Clan built salvage from the battlefield so each of them was fitting these weapons into their BattleMechs.  Laure’s Enforcer III’s Extended-Range Large Laser had been replaced with a Clan made model with an additional Extended Range Medium Laser mounted beside it increasing the Mech’s hitting power.

Standing away from the lance’s Cuirass Laure Bieganski watched as the Mech’s pilot and a tech continued work to replace the torso mounted laser system with a salvaged laser when she became aware of two people approaching her from the right.  Laure was forty-two years old and had served with Warrior House Sortek for twenty-four years and had remained with the House when it had come to this universe thirteen years before she still believed in the warrior-monk ideals of the Warrior Houses she had learned in the Confederated Suns which was why Grandmaster of the Order Imarra Sortek had deployed her with this lance to screen recruits before they arrived on Murduk.  As she turned her hand drifted to the sabre which hung from her belt out of habit rather than the threat.

“Leftenant, I am Scott Kelly and this is Charlie Johnston we both served with the Dragonlords but have been given permission by our Colonel to speak with you.  We wish to apply to join the Order of Sortek.”

“You have jobs in the service of House Davion, why would you want to transfer to another command?”

“We wish to serve the whole of House Davion, your mission will take you across the Federated Suns.  We wish to train with the best and progress our careers.  Neither of us could afford to go to one of this nation’s prestigious schools we have learned on the job throughout, we wish to bring that to your command.”  Charlie Johnston explained.

“You do know that once our mission is completed, we will be heading back to Murduk and we’ll primarily serve as the defence of that world.”

“Yes, but we’ll learn from the best warriors on the Draconis March and join something bigger than us.”

“I will speak with your Colonel and confirm your attachment to my lance, neither of you will immediately serve as a MechWarrior you will go back to being apprentices that is understood?”  She asked both nodded “assuming your transfer is confirmed I will assign you to one of my MechWarriors and your training will begin.  You will be tested on academic study, BattleMech piloting, gunnery and maintenance.  You need to understand this will be a lot of work.”  Both nodded their acceptance of the terms within hours Laure had spoken to the Dragonlords Colonel who explained that while he’d have liked to keep the two MechWarriors both had lost their Mechs fighting the Ravens and he had no other BattleMechs available at present so he was ready to dispossess them as he had no means of transferring them to another unit.  Both MechWarriors were capable if not stellar Laure hoped that with training the two would become productive members of the Order of Sortek, if not they would be cut.

Meanwhile the Snow Ravens border raids had been cut short by a Draconis Combine offensive at the far side of the Raven Alliance.  In a coordinated offensive launched with WarShip support the entire Ryuken Brigade of regiments invaded the systems of Tabayama, Suianeer and Kazanka with two regiments hitting each of the systems capturing all three within hours from the Ravens driving back their forces.

Ruling Council Meeting
Jetheitania, Zeta Atheni
Zeta Quadrant, Periphery
28th February 3118

It was a wet day on Zeta Atheni and the capitol city Jetheitania was suffering from minor flooding as the planet’s primitive drainage system was struggling with the rain.  This hadn’t stopped the Ruling Council from meeting in their chambers on the outskirts of the city.  The design of Jetheitania City was that the Ruling Council Chambers were located out with the city so not to distract the people from their daily lives.  At this session while the flooding had come up more important was the issue on Zeta Minoris where a viral respiratory disease was passing quickly and according to recent reports had spread to Zeta Parada.  The Speaker for Zeta Minoris Rachal Marchand was speaking she was in her thirties and young to represent a world but was dressed impeccably in a navy-blue business suit. “Ladies and gentlemen, it is important that medicines arrive as quickly as possible to Zeta Minoris, already the death toll on my world is in the hundreds.  In weeks it will be in the thousands.  And now according to reports a similar or the same virus is passing quickly on Zeta Parada.  We need help.”

“Yes, so do the people of Zeta Parada” Romy Monteiro said standing for her world while Rachal Marchand was young for her world Speaker Romy Monteiro was on the other end of the spectrum and was in her seventies wearing a red velvet dress with frills around the shoulders, it was like something some people would wear to a formal dance. “While Zeta Minoris is already showing hundreds of cases and by the figures, they are presenting suggests community transmission has begun, our world’s still at single case transmission we could stop it quickly if we get the medicines we need.”  She suggested “my planetary council have initiated a social lockdown and are trying to limit community transmission.”

“There is a DropShip at present taking commercial JumpShip to Buena to purchase medicines from the Lyran Commonwealth.”  Council Leader Ingvar Lofgren the leader of the council said.  The male was in his fifties with a full head of grey hair a black business suit, white shirt and green tie.  “We will buy enough to inoculate all of Zeta Minoris, treat all of those on Zeta Parada and have enough to treat more on other worlds should we need it.  Each world with infected cases should identify those who have this disease and isolate them to the best of their ability until the vaccines arrive from Buena.”

“And should this virus get out of control what will we do then?”  Richard Madisha the representative of Zeta Shimae V asked his was the least populated and least capable of protecting its population.  “Can I suggest to this council that the Mandrill Collective is closer than Buena…” he began like Rachal Marshand he was young and was willing to take risks the others began to try and drone him out.  “May I suggest that the Mandrill Collective is closer than Buena and we should turn to them for help” he said continuing on “if this virus spreads to the Mandrill Collective, then they will have as much trouble as us, they do not need transmission on the scale of Zeta Minoris any more than we do.”  He said “Ladies and gentlemen while I agree with this council’s previous judgement against approaching the Mandrills, or the lack of until now, but in this case, we may need it.”

“I strongly object to this course, the vaccines will arrive from Buena before it gets out of hand.”  Lofgren said looking at the others “we have worked this out together up until now and will continue to.”  He said Lofgren’s words swayed the council and kept a deal with the Mandrill’s off the table, at least for now.

After the meeting Lofgren retreated to his nearby office there a figure who wore a green pants suit sitting in a comfortable red chair.  “I did what you wanted.  Now what?”  He said looking at the woman she was in her thirties she had brown bobbed hair, almost delicate features, beautiful red lips, piercing green eyes and with a green shirt of the same ton as her suit underneath.

“Now we wait until the other penny drops” the woman said “your DropShip will not be returning from Buena…”

“There are twenty-four of our people onboard that ship!  The ship itself is worth a great deal to our nation!”

“The DropShip does not matter” she said quietly “as for your people I am sorry about them, but they are going to be the last that you need be worried about.”  She said “the virus is going to get worse; it will spread quickly to all of the worlds of the Quadrant and the outer stagers of the Cirincus Federation, the Mandrill Collective and Buena Archonette of the Lyran Commonwealth.”

“Buena Archonette?” Lofgren repeated not being familiar with the name.

“It is a recent development internal to the Lyran Commonwealth it won’t affect your relationship with them in the slightest, the Lyrans will be scrambling about to counter the virus like you currently are.”

“Without that DropShip our nation will be on its knees without those vaccines!”  Lofgren said recovering from what she was saying.

“Yes, it will” the woman said “your nation will suffer Council Leader Lofgren, they will need a strong leader and they will need someone willing to take chances to get you through the next few months.  Someone willing to make a decision that will protect what is left of your nation and your future.”  She said standing up “be strong, your nation will suffer but it will come through this stronger than ever and in a superior position.  That is what you have been promised and that is what we will deliver.”  She said leaving the room leaving Ingvar Lofgren alone with his thoughts.  As promised news of the a JumpShip’s disappearance along with Zeta Quadrant’s DropShip filtered through to the nation in May with the virus spreading throughout the nation’s four worlds and slowly into nearby systems just as the figure had promised, the virus also began showing up on worlds nearby which have trade with the Zeta Quadrant in the Mandrill Collective, Buena Archonette and Cirincus Federation.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Tarmac, Auxiliary Spaceport 3
Outpost Aberdeen, Castrovia
Sian Commonality, Capellan Confederation
3rd March 3118

Stepping clear of the Mule-class DropShip Rybicki onto a spaceport’s tarmac it was like the hundred other facilities that Baily Snow Raven had visited during her career first as a member of Clan Snow Raven, then as a mercenary and then as a freelance operator.  There were utility vehicles moving around, fuel tanks and plenty of active machinery.  Several BattleMechs were patrolling around the spaceport while two other DropShips were also landed at the spaceport.
She was thirty-four years old and had been born into Clan Snow Raven destined to become an Aerospace Fighter pilot, then as a ProtoMech pilot after aerospace training had not gone well.  She had undergone the enhanced imaging treatment to pilot the ProtoMechs and had been assigned to a Centaur ProtoMech, unfortunately only a fortnight after her graduation as a pilot she was captured by a mercenary force.  Soon after she and her two surviving point mates had served with the mercenary unit Krecji’s Squadron, a combined-arms battalion, unfortunately combat losses had resulted in both of her point mates being killed and she alone had survived.  When Krecji’s Squadron had passed through Galatea Station she had broken from the unit and agreed a personal contract with the Capellan Confederation to help the Confederation with some development work.  In exchange for Baily’s assistance and the Centaur ProtoMech the Capellan Confederation had paid a pretty sum to Krecji’s Squadron, enough to purchase a couple of light BattleMechs.

Now she had been transported to the world of Castrovia a jewel of a world in the heart of the Capellan Confederation.  From what she had been told the Capellans had been researching ProtoMech technology for several years which had first begun on the dead world of Necromo.  Looking around she saw that Castrovia was truly a beautiful world with idyllic green hills and trees surrounding the spaceport.  Behind her a transporter vehicle left the DropShip carrying her Centaur ProtoMech which was laid on its back.  In the air nearby there was a thundering sound as a four-rotor engine egg shaped VTOL appeared in the sky with several lifting wires dangling from underside.  Baily watched as they hooked up the ProtoMech to the VTOL and it was lifted into the sky due to the aircraft’s engine nacelle configuration, two front and two rear, the cargo carried under the aircraft was perfectly balanced.  Even as the VTOL and its Centaur cargo began to fly away a civilian vehicle pulled up beside the landing pad.  An older woman with greying-brown hair, wearing a white jacket and navy skirt got out of the vehicle and approached her, she stood nearly a full head higher than Baily’s short frame.

“Good afternoon and welcome to Castrovia, I am Citizen Doctor Nadda Jerod the leading scientist on Project Aberdeen.”  She said stopping short of Baily.

“Where is my Mech going?”  She asked casting an eye on her ProtoMech again.

“To our facility, if you will come with me, we will take you there.”  She said Baily nodded and followed her to the limousine.  The vehicle drove along a short road before turning off the main road down a track until they reached a rock-face, it stopped briefly before the rock face swung open revealing an entrance and tunnel large enough for a vehicle two or three times larger than the limousine.

Deep inside the mountain face Baily and Citizen Doctor Nadda Jerod stepped out of the vehicle and entered a high military facility with a high ceiling.  There were technicians moving around the facility.  Jerod led Baily to an opening which overlooked a massive hanger on the deck there were hundreds of ProtoMechs in various states of completion.  “What is this?”  Baily wondered looking over the field.

“For decades we have had teams scouring battlefields recovering ProtoMechs and purchasing them from the Clans.”  Jerod explained “we have been unable to utilise them on the battlefield as we lacked the knowledge that could be gained from a live ProtoMech pilot, until now.”  She said looking at Baily “we want to know how your brain works dear.”  As she spoke two guards closed from both sides and seized Baily’s arms “unfortunately, this may be a little uncomfortable.”

There was the sound of heavy metal foot prints as something else closed on them and suddenly a shirtless figure with the build of a Clan Elemental but with breathing vents built into and around his neck and metal back-canted faun legs approached.  “Welcome to Outpost Aberdeen young warrior, I am Elika Laban and I will enjoy seeing your contribution to our project.  Your contributions will not be forgotten.”  The near nightmarish character said leaning towards her Baily was reminded of stories of the Word of Blake’s cybernetically enhanced Manei Domini looking at the creature and she wondered exactly what she had volunteered and gotten herself into.

Entrance Jump, Golden Archipelago (Monolith-class JumpShip)
Galatea, Galatea Station
Star League Protectorate
11th March 3118

The Monolith-class JumpShip Golden Archipelago jumped into the Galatea system and immediately launched a Mammoth-class DropShip, the Marion Fulton, which burned towards to Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission run Galatea Station. Remaining at the JumpShip was a Leopard CV and an Avenger-class DropShips which were also part of the unit. Today the unit’s commander Captain Anthony Steve planned to register their command with the MRBC as Steve’s Steve a unit which would specialize in facilitating the movement of resources from one planet to another. The Mammoth’s cargo bay would be turned over to any customers as would the remaining six DropShip Collars on the JumpShip for transport of any customer’s assets.

When registering his command Anthony Steve concealed from the MRBC that there was a lance of Archer BattleMechs hidden behind a fake wall on the Marion Fulton and company of Battle Armoured equipped marines for security.  These assets would only be used to get the command out of trouble when on the ground.

The unit’s first contract is to transport a combined arms Battalion’s worth of equipment from Hesperus II to the McCarron’s Armoured Cavalry which is based in the Federated Suns.

Assassination attempt
Marduk, Robinson PDZ
Draconis March, Federated Suns
20th March 3118

A raid on Marduk by an unidentified combined arms regiment is followed by special forces attack on the Order of Sortek’s command complex.  Analysis of the attack points towards the attack being directed at the Order of Sortek instead of any of the other facilities on the world.  Marduk’s militia works hand in hand with the Order of Sortek to turn the attack aside.  Like the main forces the special forces attack employs top-rated stealth equipment which had been sourced from the Draconis Combine but they fall afoul to the layered defences of the Order of Sortek’s facility.  The facility is built into a mountain, blast proof door follows blast proof door with multiple secure rooms which are full of heavily armed members of the unit’s Household Guard infantry brigade, most members of the Order begin at the bottom and must work their way up before gaining a front-line position.  Sheer numbers turn back the attack with the entire assault force killed, dozens of the Order’s infantry troopers die in the attack but their fanatical devotion to the defence of their facility proves their worth.

Conference Room, Rasalhague (Leviathan II-class Battleship)
Alshian, Alshian District
Rasalhague Dominion
23rd March 3118

Despite living her entire life as a warrior of the Rasalhague Dominion and having travelled in space throughout her life the new Khan of Clan Ghost Bear, and by extension the Rasalhague Dominion, Khan Angela Bekker hated space travel but it was part of her life and today was a necessary duty.  On board the battleship Rasalhague she was watching the Rasalhague Dominion’s most recent Trial of Founding, since the agreement by the Khans to honour future Trials of Founding for new Bloodhouses there had been three such battles two by trueborn warriors one who had failed dying in the attempt and another a MechWarrior named Ilnay who had founded the Techus Bloodhouse witnessed by saKhan Faulk Lassenerra.

This was Angela’s first witnessing of a Trial of Founding and the first official Trial of Founding by a freeborn aerospace fighter pilot.  Watching the screens Angela subconsciously rubbed the third and fourth fingers on her left hand which had been replaced years ago following The Clawing Rite.  She and members of her sibko had hunted a Ghost Bear on Strana Mechty armed with only spears.  In order to lure out her prey she had severed the fingers as bait ever since she had rubbed the fingers during moments of thought.

Now she was thinking deeply as she watched freeborn fighter pilot Svenga piloting a Jengiz OmniFighter, a workhorse one-hundred-ton craft built by the Ghost Bears for the last eighty plus years, flying around some well-placed debris which had broken up the “space” giving the pilots some opportunities to break line of sight and turn the tables on their opponents.  Already Svenga had defeated one pilot and had succeeded in founding the bloodname but now she was intent on defeating a second pilot enhancing the new Bloodhouses prestige coming around the wreckage she unloaded a weapons salvo on the enemy Sabutai shattering the back of the of the enemy OmniFighter and earning her second kill.  With her second opponent Svenga turned her fighter towards the third and last opponent an incoming Scytha immediately the Jengiz was hit by a salvo of large lasers which exposed several armour weaknesses.  As Scytha approached it added in its assault-class ultra-autocannon to the mix shattering the Jengiz armour punching into the fighter’s structure ending its fight.  Showing her warrior spirit Svenga was returning fire even as she punched out of her stricken one-hundred-ton OmniFighter.  Even with this defeat she had won her Trial, even if she had been crippled during the ejection process her DNA would be added to the Rasalhague Dominion’s breeding programs.

“Aerospace pilot Svenga have you survived? This is Khan Bekker” She asked using the Rasalhague’s communication system with a button beside the monitor.

“Aff Khan Bekker.” The pilot answered moments later even as a small craft approached the battle site to recover her.

“You have succeeded today, announce to all on this channel your name which will be entered into our Clans’ Remembrance and become our newest Bloodhouse.”

“I am Svenga Miraborg of Clan Ghost Bear and the Rasalhague Dominion.”  She announced Khan Angela Bekker could “hear the smile” on her lips as she said her name.  The name Miraborg would go around the Clans like wildfire it was a name that was already in the Clans’ during the Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere a Free Rasalhague Republic aerospace fighter pilot had flown her aerospace fighter into the flagship of the ilKhan in a suicide run.  The pilot had succeeded in killing herself but she had also killed the ilKhan of all the Clans and halting the invasion of the Inner Sphere for a year and her name was Tyra Miraborg.  Svenga was not a descendant of Tyra but instead she was the descendant of a cousin of Tyra’s nevertheless the announcement of her name would make plenty of noise among the other Clans and the new pilot would immediately be called upon to answer this new attention.

Landing zone
Body 42, District of Lesnovo
Free Worlds League
28th March 3118

The sky was filled with DropShips and small craft descending through the atmosphere of the world currently named as Body 42.  These DropShips belonged to forces of Clan Smoke Jaguar, the defence force of the district, and of the forces of the former Amaris Empire in Exile.  One of the DropShips had been deployed from the Exploration Vessel Spirit of Northumberland which had landed away from the other vessels.  Now Captain Bruce Barnes approached Admiral Alessandra Schiavon the commander of the Amaris Empire in Exile forces.  “Welcome to Body 42” he said

“It’s not a very pretty world” she said looking over the landscape the immediate area of the exiles landing around the equator was pleasant enough with fresh water streams and light shrub vegetation near the water.  But beyond that the ground was largely frozen wastes possibly with mineral deposits which the recently landing forces could exploit if they discovered.

“But it is potentially yours, and it’s drone free” he said looking at the woman while she was ten years his senior, she was growing her blonde hair out since leaving her home space.  She had also taken his advice and removed the Rim Worlds Republic emblem from her uniform’s left breast before today; as today she met Khan Petra Furey, the leader of the District of Lesnovo and of Clan Smoke Jaguar.

“Yes, it is” she agreed looking around “even this small amount of land will be enough to house our population.  With some surface heaters, and greenhouse gas producers we could perhaps thicken the atmosphere and bring more life to this world, our sensors identified plenty of ice beyond the equator.”

“Ready to meet the Khan, quiaff?”  He asked looking at her

“What is that word ‘quiaff?’” She asked not recognising it

“It’s a Clan word, you’ll want to learn them, even though Khan Furey and her people are former Clansmen and they hold to many of their traditions.”  Barnes explained “they are the District’s little pets, we allow them to hold onto their traditions and pretend they are still Clan while really they are just a bunch of freebirths with delusions of grandeur.”  He said

“But they rule the district?”  The admiral asked seeing a hole in the captain’s suggestion immediately, the Khan was the ruler of the District and had final say if they gained control over the Body 42 star system.

“Through a vote, just like all things in the Free Worlds League Khan Furey played the system in our district and won the vote to lead.  She can be removed by the same vote.” He explained trying to assure her that it was not a dictatorship

“And she accepts that?”  Admiral Alessandra Schiavon asked “in our world your seniority gives you leadership and it is up to others to overthrow you.  The power is granted based on the abilities you have previously shown.  I gained mine by gunning down plenty of drones.” She said proudly even though it was an enemy they had created for themselves

“Khan Furey gained her position through combat; she won the vote for control over the district.  I would be surprised if she would roll over and give up the position.” He noted the Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser in orbit had been enough of an indication that the Smoke Jaguars would not simply roll over should they be challenged.  “Now to meet the Khan” he said reaching out with his arm showing them the way they made their way through some of the brush towards the Khan’s DropShip landing zone.  On their way infantry troopers and armoured vehicles guarded the path they group made their way through to the Khan’s party.

As they approached the Khan turned to face them Khan Petra Furey was a young woman surprising Admiral Schiavon, these Smoke Jaguars were clearly powerful and it appeared they did not discriminate on age, she nodded a greeting to the Khan who crossed her fist across her chest in a salute.  “Welcome to Body 42” she said greeting them “Admiral, I would like to formally offer this world to your people…”

“Thank you, Khan, the people of…” Schiavon began interrupting the Khan before Furey spoke again.

“Admiral, we are willing to offer this world to your people in exchange for your assistance.”

“Our assistance? We are refugees and this world is uninhabited.” Schiavon pleaded not understanding what they could give them.

“Yes, this world is for now and without your agreement on an alliance with my people it will remain so.”  Furey warned

“My people are refugees; we may have ships but we would never have even gotten this far without the assistance of the Spirit” she said turning towards Captain Barnes.  “The supplies and fuel you provided us with was invaluable.” Barnes simply nodded “we have agreed to share our civilian vessels with your companies, the twenty-two Sub-Compact Cores will be invaluable.”  In the time of the original Star League Sub-Compact Cores were used sparingly on very specialist ships.  While the civilian ships that had been brought here were not very good space faring vessels but their component parts would be worth ten times their weight.

“Invaluable to the company that is able to exploit the technology, my Smoke Jaguars and the people of this district” Khan Petra Furey said she did not appear to be angry or frustrated by the Admiral’s suggestions to date.  “It will also be in your best interests.”

“I am prepared to listen” she said weary from the struggle in their home systems and the trip.

“It is quite simple, should our District come under attack or be forced to act against an enemy your WarShips will assist in our military operations.”  She explained “otherwise they may remain here, though we are willing to offer your vessels repairs and assistance.”

“Those are terms we can agree to” Admiral Schiavon agreed, they would have assisted in the district’s defences without being asked.  “Once we have settled, we would expect a vote within the district’s system of legislation?”  She asked looking at Captain Barnes who nodded.

“Of course, Admiral, once you are settled” Khan Furey said “and what will we be calling this system?”  She asked believing that they would not want to keep the designation “Body 42”

“We will call this system Illion 2 after our previous home world.”  She said Khan Furey nodded and agreed Illion 2 would not be a colony overnight but with the civilian ships they could make enough money to get the colony going and support their people.  Meanwhile with three new WarShips added the District’s defence Khan Petra Furey could move ahead with other plans.

Some of you may have noticed recently it was posted that JA Baker/Starbug is possibly no longer with us.  I never met him but this timeline wouldn't have become as rich as it is if it was not for contributions like his so the last update is a little tribute going out on the ship he designed, plain sailing to him.

Cache Site #47A
Bearclaw, Society Territory
Kerensky Cluster, Clan Homeworlds
12th April 3118

The struggle to control the Clan Homeworlds continued between Clans Blood Spirit, Goliath Scorpion and the Society.  Communities, entire cities had been shattered during the fighting with millions killed in the fighting in space and on the ground.  Today Clan Goliath Scorpion’s Crimson Seeker Trinary were engaging Society forces on the world of Bearclaw, once a stronghold of the Rasalhague Dominion, searching for a weapons cache believed to date back to the founding of the Clans.

“Well, it looks like they beat us to it.”  Star Captain Fiona Hernandez said sitting in her Summoner OmniMech.

“But they have not opened it yet which gives us an opportunity” Star Commander Edmund Baba the commander of their Battle Armour Star said.  His suit was perched on the seventy-ton OmniMech’s shoulder while the rest of the star were arranged over the other four OmniMechs in their star.  The Crimson Seeker Trinary had gone through many combinations in the past; often reduced to only a star in strength.  Now the unit was a reinforced trinary with the OmniMechs and Elementals working together in a Nova formation, supporting them was a star of ProtoMechs, a star of armoured vehicles and a star of aerospace fighters.  At present the aerospace fighters were chasing off Society craft leaving the ground forces to a fight alone.

“We will hit them in waves, Mechs and Battle Armour open the door, we kick them get their attention then Liz, you hit them from the left and at the same time Tyla hits them from the right.”  She said bringing in the two sub-commanders no-one disagreed with her they knew she would listen if they suggested something but there was no need the society force, they were arrayed against were inferior in number and experience.  “Attack!”  She called out

The Mechs ran out of the trees and into the clearing beside the entrance to the underground cache.  Fiona stopped her Summoner first the Elementals launching off the back of the OmniMech firing their short-range missiles as they jumped pounding a Society Septicemia OmniMech Fiona joined them with her large lasers pounding the fifty-five-ton design, honourable combat had gone from the homeworlds a long time ago.  Now it was all about the remaining two Clans surviving against the Society and expanding their sphere of influence.  So far, the Blood Spirits had reformed five galaxies worth of forces while the Goliath Scorpions had four but still the Society claimed control over the majority of the Homeworlds.

The other Mechs ran beyond her Summoner launching their battle armoured troops as they did.  From the left the twenty-five ProtoMechs ran into the fray adding their firepower to the considerable to that of the OmniMechs and battle armoured troops.  When the ten-vehicle strong star joined the battle, it was almost over Fiona’s targeted Septicemia was on the ground as was another enemy Mech, and three vehicles.  The concentrated firepower of the entire force brought down the remaining Society forces in short order, an almost bloodless loss for the Goliath Scorpion force.  The Clans would do everything in their power to continue to hold Bearclaw but the Society forces constantly tried to counter their rule.

---

It took them nearly three more hours to crack the codes and break into the cache.  With most of the unit in position above ground Star Captain Fiona Hernandez led a few members of her team down into the facility armed with hand weapons and wearing clothing they’d stored onboard their Mechs.  Although the cache had been lost from contact for centuries the systems of the cache still worked and lights began to come on for them as they entered “welcome to Star League Defence Force Cache #47 Alfa.”  The female voice said as they entered, who had recorded the message none of them knew but they all knew it was one of their ancestors.  A couple of them whispered words as they reached the bottom of the entrance ramp and the floodlighting which covered the main Mechbay came up.  There were three rows each with at least a dozen BattleMechs standing in them, next were several rows of combat vehicles enough to outfit an entire combined arms regiment of BattleMechs and Armour.  None of the equipment would be immediately ready for combat but each of them would contribute to the growing Goliath Scorpion forces.  Walking along one of the rows of Mechs Fiona stopped in front of a Minsk, one of the first Ghost Bear BattleMechs.  “This isn’t a Star League Cache; our Clans formed it.”  She said around glancing to the side she saw a Pollux Heavy Tank and behind it was a Vali Close Artillery Support vehicle.

“Perhaps out Clans refilled it after the supplies the Exodus Army left here were exhausted.  The Mechs here may have been surpassed by new designs but they were still potent.  It would have been wasteful for them to be disassembled.”  Edmund Baba said, he and his point of Elementals had joined them their suits now lacking the missile launchers which gave them their armour piercing punch but they still had heavier weapons than anything the Fiona and the others had.  Edmund’s suit visor was open but his deep voice still boomed through the carnivorous room.

“It is a find worthwhile of our mission” MechWarrior William said he was very young to be within the command, one of the ristars of their Clan, the new generation who would replace Fiona Hernandez and others in time but not today.

“Aff, we need to maintain the perimeter until we can extract everything to the FOB” Fiona said “we’ll take it in shifts to maintain watch and to inspect what is down here.”

“Affirmative, Star Captain, what about searching for artifacts?” Tyla Myers asked her wheel chair joining them.  Her spine had been broken in a Circle of Equals but instead of resigning from duty she had continued to fight for her Clan, even from the confines of her chair.

“We can make time for that as well; it is our duty.”  Fiona Hernandez confirmed every member of the Trinary would be given an opportunity to take some trinkets from the cache on top of whatever else was salvaged.

Landing Zone G6, Cordia City Spaceport
Coromodir VI, Cordia City
Aurigan Collective, Periphery
19th April 3118

The spaceport beside Cordia City was a hive of activity with a constant stream of DropShips with supplies coming in and leaving.  Coromodir VI was at the capitol of the Aurigan Collective and the most developed world by a long way but with everything coming through the planet even today was a special day walking out of one of the arriving DropShips was a fifty-five-ton Goshawk BattleMech, a Clan built nimble BattleMech capable of speeds near one hundred kilometres per hour and engaging in jumps of one hundred and fifty metres.

The Mech was painted grey, silver, and black in an arctic camouflage which made it stand out on the dry world of Coromodir on which most forces used forest or urban camouflage.  The Goshawk stayed on the Mech paths heading from its DropShip into one of the hangers provided for visiting BattleMechs.  The crews guided the MechWarrior into one of the bays and a raising gantry moved up beside the cockpit the MechWarrior stepped out of the back of his BattleMech onto the gantry which moved away from the cockpit and slowly descended towards the ground.

Stepping off the gantry the MechWarrior was dressed in a simple jumpsuit “Colonel Strum Kintaro” he said to the technician who stood at the bottom “the Storm Raiders.  I am here to see Lady Kamea Arano to negotiate a new contract.”

“Welcome to Coromodir, Colonel, you are expected there is a ground transport waiting for you.”  Strum nodded, he looked at the BattleMech one more time then left heading for the vehicle.  He had negotiated contracts several times in his fifty-eight years with the unit after working his way up from being a simple MechWarrior to commander of the combined-arms regiment but he could feel it in his bones, this might be the last time that he’d command the unit in a negotiation.  Sturm was seventy-nine years old and he was ready for his retirement this place was as far from Kore, the world he joined the Storm Raiders, that he could get and he’d make sure that the unit was well taken care of for today.

Throne Room, Steiner Palace
Triad, Tharkad
Halfway Province, Lyran Commonwealth
21st April 3118

Within the Throne Room of the Steiner Royal Palace Archon Jessica Steiner said on the throne in front of the two Hauptmann OmniMechs which stood guard ready to engage any hostiles.  Traditionally the throne room had two Griffins standing guard but as they carried long range weaponry Jessica had elected to change them for the ninety-ton OmniMechs.  Both had been configured to be lethal close quarters fighters guaranteeing that nothing would survive an assault against the throne room.

Today there were no such threats however as Archon Jessica Steiner was meeting with the Commonwealth’s highest-ranking officials General of Armies Sabine Steiner and Fleet Admiral Samuel Wyn-Morris.  “Archon, we wish to change the Commonwealth’s naval doctrine to combat the heavier WarShips the Clans are now fielding.”  Samuel Wyn-Morris began “while the most effective and wise choice would be to employ nuclear weapons against such targets, we do not know how the Clans would react to a mass use of such weapons.”  He explained while on a planet the use of nuclear weapons was frowned upon by every civilized nation in space the rules were slightly different, it was acceptable for them to be used against WarShips but rarely was such methods employed instead slugging matches were more common.

“We will not become the first nation to test that theory.”  Archon Jessica Steiner answered

“Of course, not Archon, instead we are suggesting using a different method.”  Wyn-Morris said “instead we propose a different strategy.  The Lyran Commonwealth currently deploys ten Battle-cruiser or Battleship classed vessels, four of these ships are deployed as part of the Isle of Skye’s command and outwith this plan the other six are under our direct command.”  He said the devolved military of the Isle of Skye operated independently from Tharkad.  “Our proposal is that we deploy all six of these vessels in two squadrons with all other ships operating in support squadrons.  With this concentration of firepower, we can overwhelm any Clan WarShip we encounter ensuring space superiority.”

“An interesting proposal we have employed exclusively assault class designs together before on the ground but in space?”  Sabine Steiner wondered “won’t that leave our other ships vulnerable to being overwhelmed?”

“Not if we deploy our vessels correctly and have good intelligence backups.”  Wyn-Morris said “my second proposal is that any shipyard capable of deploying Battleships and Battle-cruisers does so.  Any other class being constructed should be completed but afterwards we only construct new Battleships and Battle-cruisers.”

“An all or nothing strategy” Jessica Steiner suggested “we have ten other WarShips not including scout vessels and Merchant vessels.  They could complete normal patrol and guard duties.”

“Because some of our shipyards, such as Coventry are incapable of building anything larger than a Light Cruiser we will have a steady supply of lighter WarShips to fill the ranks of our patrol squadrons.  While the Battle-cruisers and Battleships produced will fill out the front-line squadrons and allow us to form other ones.”  He said confident in the plan “this way we can counter the Clan threat and push back any WarShip offensive short of a Rasalhague Dominion Leviathan.  For that we’d need something else, probably nuclear weapons.”  He finished the presentation; the Leviathan was a beast of a design of a WarShip but fortunately the Ghost Bears were the least aggressive of the Clans which operated on their borders.

“We will try out this proposal” Jessica Steiner said she was a pilot at heart and on at least one level agreed with the Fleet Admiral, sometimes firepower was needed to counter firepower and the number of guns you could bring to a fight mattered, nothing could bring more guns than a Battleship or Battle-cruiser.

Conference Room, FSS Pegasus (Columbia-class Battleship)
New Avalon, New Avalon Combat Region
Crucis March, Federated Suns
29th April 3118

The New Avalon system was always a hive of activity but today there was a special cruise taking place.  The FSS Pegasus and the FSS Courageous cruised through the system heading for New Avalon itself the ancient Columbia-class Battleship and the brand-new Courageous-class Strike Cruiser moved together at a steady 1G acceleration.

Deep within the FSS Pegasus First Prince Burton Davion and Duchess Sterling Davion along with their son Duke Luther Davion stood in front of the collected press of the Federated Suns along with the last captain of the ship all four were dressed in the full-dress uniform of the AFFS.  “Today is a very special occasion for our nation, for the centuries long Succession Wars naval combat fell from people’s minds as the technology was lost.  The recovery of the Helm Memory Core and the return of the Clans saw the return of WarShips to the Inner Sphere.”  Burton said he knew many eyes would have gone onto Sterling at that moment with her history in the Snow Raven Clan.  “The Federated Suns was able to restore many vessels to its fleet which had been held in storage until the time we were able to repair them.”  He said “the Pegasus was one of those ships, she served the Federated Suns into the First Succession War and she has served us for sixty-seven years since her reactivation.”  He said “a ship with such a storied history does not simply go to the breakers yard and fade into history.  It has been decided that the Pegasus, while unable to serve in a military fashion due to age and fatigue, she will continue to serve our nation as a museum in orbit of New Avalon.  She will be used as an educational tool for future generations.”  He said stepping aside to make way for Duchess Sterling Davion.

“For all of the differences that the Clans now have with the Inner Sphere, they too remember and honour the service of vessels which have served for many years.”  She said bringing a different perspective “there are WarShips in the Clans fleets which have been maintained since the days of the Star League and continue to serve in different capacities.  Since I came to the Federated Suns, I like many others have launched an aerospace fighter from this ship’s decks, she carried me to where I could serve the Federated Suns like she has carried thousands of others over the years.  This ship and all who have sailed with her have done so with honour, and they should always be remembered.”  She said standing aside making way for her son Luther Davion.

Unlike Burton and Sterling, he looked uncomfortable in the uniform but knew his duty and had agreed to this “while we cannot forget the Pegasus’ service today, we also celebrate the beginning of a new journey with the FSS Courageous joining the Federated Suns’ Navy.”  As he spoke the monitor behind them activated showing the almost dagger shaped vessel which flew alongside the Pegasus. “She is the first of the new Courageous Strike Cruiser-class, a design which originally is as old as the Pegasus, and is hoped she will serve our nation far into the future.”  He said as the FSS Courageous banked to port and up away from the Pegasus Burton then stepped aside allowing the last captain of the Pegasus to step up.

“My name is Vice-Admiral J. A. Baker, I am the Commander of this vessel, and I have served on this ship for the last twenty years.”  He said “I have led this ship and her crew into many battles and it has been my honour to see many sons and daughters of the Federated Suns serve with distinction from her decks.  Today is a special one for me as I am also retiring from the service of the AFFS.  This old girl and I have done our duty, and we must never forget why we fight, and who we fight for, many people have died for the freedoms we cherish.  It is unfortunate but it is the call that we have all answered time and again.”  He said behind him Luther Davion watched him carefully as the old Admiral came to attention and saluted the cameras “Attention!  And salute!”  He commanded out of reflex every member of the AFFS in the room including the First Princes party saluted in unison the Admiral then did a perfect standing turn towards First Prince Burton Davion.  “To the Honour of the Federated Suns!”  He called out “Long live House Davion!”  He finished around the room the words were repeated quite loudly, outside the room they could hear the chant be repeated by other members of the crew who had been close enough, their chants were then repeated throughout the ship as she made her last journey approaching New Avalon into retirement.

---

Several hours later the First Princes party visited Admiral Baker’s quarters deep inside the mighty WarShip.  “Sire, welcome to… my home” he said showing them into the group of compartments.  The Pegasus was such a large vessel that the commander, senior staff, and some visitors were afforded a set of compartments which included a lounge, a small kitchen area, bed and toilet facilities.  Entering the room First Prince Burton Davion realized that Admiral Baker’s quarters resembled that of an those that could be found on an old sea going vessel with many wood furnishings and various mementos which the Admiral had acquired over the years each of them was secured to the furniture or into cabinets to save them from drifting around the room when the ship wasn’t under thrust.  “How can I be of service?”

“You’ve given plenty service, Admiral, I just wanted to ask what your retirement plans were?”  Burton asked heading over to one of the couches in the room, Sterling Davion joined him there while their son Lucian continued to look around the quarters.

“My wife is closing down our assets on Galax then she’ll join me on New Avalon.”  The Admiral answered sitting opposite them “I’ve never been one for planetary connections, I like space too much.”

“I know that feeling” Sterling Davion said, she had spent so much of her life in space with the Ravens, she’d tried to stay in the air or space since coming to the Federated Suns.

“A year or two ago we bought ourselves an old KR-61 Long range shuttle, we’ve done her up a little she’s old but she’ll do the job, we plan on visiting some family around the Federated Suns, before going into the Protectorate and onto the Lyran Commonwealth.  My wife was originally from the Commonwealth so we’ll track down a couple of her old stomping grounds.”  He said the KR-61 was an in-system vessel capable of transporting two people from a planet to a JumpShip in basic comfort.

“I will provide you with the Courageous, she’ll need to go on a journey to test her systems, she can be your escort.”

“Thank you, Sire, for your generous offer” the Admiral said looking uncomfortable “unfortunately I must decline.  I have spent forty years in space on various ships of the Federated Suns Navy.  My wife has joined me several times onboard, she wants to enjoy our retirement away from the navy.”  He said “we’re going to dock with passenger DropShips and JumpShips and pay to use their facilities, live a life in luxury.”

“Quite right too” Sterling agreed with the choice, she’d never retire as the wife of the First Prince but she could understand the sentiment.

“Then I’ll offer you a compromise” Burton suggested “ask your wife to delay your departure by a couple of weeks” he said “on New Avalon I have an Ares Mark IX Attack Craft which was gifted to my family by Universal Air.  It’s been extensively modified into an executive transport for two.”  He said glancing at Sterling who nodded “I’m willing to offer you the use of the ship, and allow you to travel in safety and luxury.”  He offered him.

“Thank you, Sire, that is very kind of you.”  The old admiral said smiling at the thought an Ares would be quite an upgrade over their old shuttle and would give them the freedom.  “I accept.”

“We’ll also purchase your old shuttle” Lucian said Burton glanced over at his son “the Admiral can use the money enjoy his time off.”

“Why would you buy the old Starbug?” He asked surprised by the offer

“I agree” Burton said nodding to his son as he stood up.

“As do I, thank you all, this means a lot.”  The Admiral said raising from his own chair meeting the First Prince’s extended hand shaking it.  “I guess we’ll have a new Starbug for our trip.”

“Your service has been welcome” First Prince Burton Davion said “you should enjoy your retirement as should the Pegasus, you’ve both done well.”

Aftermath, Rest and Refit
Kirkenlaard, District of Marik
Free Worlds League
8th May 3118

Following an unsuccessful attempt to wrest control over Gallatin the mercenary units Kay’s Jokers and Jacob’s Juggernauts were licking their wounds.  Colonel Tassa Kay convinces the remains of the Juggernauts to join her jokers filling out their third and fourth battalions bringing the Jokers up to a reinforced Combined-arms Regiment in strength.

Basecamp, Brotherhood of Randis
Molokai, District of Bowang
Free Worlds League
17th May 3118

Thirty years had passed since the Brotherhood of Randis had regained its independence from Clan Nova Cat.  During that time the Brotherhood had accepted contracts throughout the periphery with the Taurian Concordat, Magistracy of Canopus, Cirincus Federation, Zeta Quadrant, and various independent worlds.  From the twelve warriors who had left Hope (Randis) retreating from the Nova Cat advance only eight of the original members remained but Grand-Knight Amy Frews had accepted new Knight-errants from many of their contracts and the unit was now able to field three full binaries of BattleMechs, Armour and Infantry.  Small contracts in the periphery were not enough to keep the unit going so they had finally accepted an Inner Sphere contract replacing Jacob’s Juggernauts on Molokai garrisoning the world for the District of Bowang.

The base they occupied could support an entire regiment instead of the short battalion that the Brotherhood currently fielded.  They had powered up some of the facility leaving other parts inactive Grand-Knight Amy Frews walked over the exercise yard and entered the Mechbay standing in front of her Nova Cat OmniMech.  She hated what the Mech stood for and what the Brotherhood had lost since being part of the Clan and their subsequent retreat across the periphery but she could not deny what it was capable of in the field of battle.  The OmniMech like every other unit in the Brotherhood of Randis’ current TO&E was painted blue with silver highlights.

Her waist mounted comm unit beeped for attention and she reached down “Go ahead”

“Grand-Knight, we have a visitor at the gate the Loremaster of Clan Smoke Jaguar who occupy territory in the District of Bowang.  He wishes to speak to you.”

“Damned Clanners” she said angrily looking at the Nova Cat OmniMech one more time “are you going to kill more of them today?”  She asked the silent giant.  She turned and left the Mechbay quickly heading back across the exercise yard to the main gates “Jimmy, Open up the gates!”  She shouted as the approached the doors cranked and banged as the slowly swung open, she would have to get those looked at and repaired.

The gate opened revealing a tall well-muscled man wearing a black and red uniform with what looked like clawed fingers reaching over the left shoulder and extending towards the middle of the breast of the jacket.  “Welcome to Molokai, I am Grand-Knight Amy Frews of the Brotherhood of Randis, we have taken garrison of this base for the District of Bowang.”

“Thank you, my name is Loremaster Algoth Beckett, I am of the same genetic stock as Lucas Beckett the former Grand-Knight of your order and I wish to speak to you.”  He said Grand-Knight Lucas Beckett replaced Amy Frews grand-father as commander of the Brotherhood of Randis. Algoth Beckett was a large man with long hair which extended down over his shoulders his clothing appeared to made of various layers of leather while the forearms of were covered in brown fur.  “I understand that your unit has many former members of Clan Nova Cat within it, quiaff?”  He asked Algoth Beckett remained at the outside of the gate looking in.

“Yes, there are eight members of our unit active since our independence from Clan Nova Cat.  A two of them can chart their service back to when they were members of your Clan.”  She said while she hated that her Brotherhood had become part of the Nova Cats, she would not ignore their accomplishments.

“There are Jaguars here on this base?”

“Two” Amy Frews answered proudly “Cray and Ukra both served as members of your Smoke Jaguars before their fall, then as members of the Brotherhood of Randis, of Clan Nova Cat and now as members of the Brotherhood once more.”

“Impressive” Algoth admitted “which is why I am here Grand-Knight, I want to offer the former clansmen of your unit a chance at immortality.  The combat experience of your unit is well known to my fellow Clansmen but we may not be known to you.  For the last few years, we have slowly been rebuilding our strength within the Free Worlds League, we are not becoming the Smoke Jaguars we once were nor do we have the resources our people once have.”

   “What is this about immortality?”

“We would like to offer your former Clansmen a chance of having their DNA added to our breeding program.”  He offered

   “Why?” she asked the warrior

“We are short on resources” he stated simply “including DNA.  While we could take it from the warriors that have fought with us as we have rebuilt, having true Clan DNA in our program will give our next generations an edge.”  He explained

“What will they be expected to do?”

“Simply provide us with a sample of DNA, and become part of something bigger.”  The clansman offered.

“I will speak with the warriors.” Amy Frews offered “you will not enter this base Loremaster.”

“I understand, I will return to my transport and wait.”  He said turning away heading over to a waiting Indra Infantry Transport.

---

Almost an hour later a single LGB-10V Longbow BattleMech approached the Indra.  “I am Cray Rabbit of Clan Smoke Jaguar.” The MechWarrior said he was ancient for a clan-born MechWarrior at least in his eighties, his head was completely bald his hair having long ago left him, he walked with the aid of a cane but inside a BattleMech he was as capable as any others. “The other MechWarriors have agreed to provide you with a giftake, but I challenge you to accept my Trial of Founding.”  He said using the term which recently came into use on Tukayyid.  The Smoke Jaguars were not part the Clan Council on Tukayyid but it was a challenge he hoped they could not turn down. “I was born to this Clan, I am Trueborn within the Smoke Jaguars and I have survived when hundreds of others have failed, I will be remembered.”

“If you think you are capable of the challenge, we will accept your Trial of Founding.” Algoth Beckett replied from onboard the Indra “I will have three of my MechWarriors approach, when you see them, you may begin when ready.”

Soon after three BattleMechs approached a Phoenix Hawk PXH-3M, a Ostol OTL-5M and a Prefect PRF-1C approached three House Marik designs each of which carried the Eagle Crest of House Marik and the stalking smoke jaguar of Clan Smoke Jaguar.  Immediately Cray Rabbit opened fire with his twin twenty-tube long range missile launchers targeting the Phoenix Hawk the forty missiles flew between the two BattleMechs as a coat of metal and flame.  The Phoenix Hawk lifted its right arm the anti-missile system which shot down several of the missiles but the rest slammed into BattleMech exploding all over the Mech’s right arm shattering it into two parts the hand and the weapons mounted there were torn to pieces.  The rest of the missiles slammed into the rest of the arm and torso destroying the remains of the right arm staggering the forty-five-ton BattleMech backwards keeping the pilot on the backfoot.  Cray Rabbit did not waste time instead he opened fire with the two small long range missile launchers as well adding in another ten missiles striking the Phoenix Hawk’s legs.

To the Phoenix Hawk pilots credit the pilot kept the BattleMech on its feet and ran it to the right of the Longbow firing the BattleMech’s extended-range large laser.  The red coloured beam cut across the Longbow’s armoured chest as the Phoenix Hawk continued to run.  Cray Rabbit tracked his enemy twisting the BattleMech’s torso and legs to walk and track the lighter Mech both torso lasers opened fire one burned down the right torso of the enemy Mech while the other completely missed its mark.  The Phoenix Hawk jumped into the air avoiding another volley of forty long range missiles the BattleMech jumped towards the Longbow Cray opened fire with the smaller racks catching the jumping Mech mid-air causing minor damage.  The Phoenix Hawk pilot spun on the spot and unleashed two medium pulse lasers into the back of the Longbow at the same time Cray triggered both rear mounted lasers on his Longbow at near point-blank range the lasers could not miss and both bore into the enemy Mech’s chest burning a large hole in its damaged chest.  The Phoenix Hawk pilot jumped away but Cray was already turning targeting the retreating BattleMech he did not give the enemy pilot time to react engaging it with both large long range missile racks.  A little over half of the missiles struck the back of the Phoenix Hawk mid-air the Mech lost control and lost power mid-way through the jump landing flat on its face out of the fight Cray had been successful.

But one victory was not enough he twisted the BattleMech’s torso and unleashed a volley of missiles at the Ostol, the sixty ton BattleMech’s anti-missile system swatted several of the missiles from the sky while the rest blanketed the accelerating BattleMech.  The short distance between the two Mechs was covered quickly by the Ostol and a pulse laser barrage from the Mech savaged Cray’s Longbow’s torso the pulse blasts punching into the armour burning deeply.  Cray’s Mech was built to support others from a distance and not for close range combat he triggered the smaller five tube but the Ostol was moving too fast instead Cray twisted the Longbow to track the Ostol hitting it with the paired medium lasers one of which burned into the lighter Mech while the other missed widely. Cray continued to track the enemy BattleMech and unleashed another volley from the two large missile racks but the pilot had anticipated it and had already changed his Mech’s movement planting the Mech’s foot and twisting towards the Longbow.  The Ostol unleashed a volley of pulse laser blasts which tore into the Longbow’s torso the pilot’s weapons targeted on one particular spot caused heavy damage to the Mech destroying one of the smaller missile racks which caused a minor explosion on the Mech’s torso.

Cray’s Mech recoiled from the hit but he regained control quickly unleashing another volley of missiles but the Ostol’s anti-missile system cut down many of the missiles before they reached their target.  The Ostol’s larger pulse lasers slammed into the Longbow in return fire the pulse lasers exploited the whole already made in the Longbow’s armour penetrating deeply into the hull of the assault BattleMech.  Inside the torso there was a deep ammunition bay for the long-range missiles, the impact of the pulse laser blast caused the missiles to cook off causing an explosion which tore through the Longbow’s torso consuming it in fire.  Out of the growing inferno Cray’s ejector seat flew high into the sky propelling him away from the doomed BattleMech.

---

Several hours later Cray laid on a medical gurney inside the base.  Loremaster Algoth Beckett was escorted into the room by one of the Brotherhood who remained at the door.  Algoth Beckett towered over the gurney looking down at Cray.  The ejection from the Longbow had not been good for Cray first the ammunition explosion from inside his BattleMech had sent a neural feedback shock into his brain and then his left side had been shattered by an impact and given his age his prognoses for recover was not good.

“You succeeded Cray Rabbit in gaining the Smoke Jaguars respect and regaining your honour.” Algoth said placing a MechWarrior pin in his right-hand which Cray gripped down on “at seventy-two years of age I believe you are perhaps the oldest MechWarrior our people have granted the title bloodnamed to since our foundation, though the records are a little spotty.”  He said giving Cray a proud smile “your name will be remembered in our Clan, it is the name you have been known as for most of your life, Cray Rabbit and you will be remembered as the founder of that name.”  Cray was unable to speak due to his injuries simply smiled, to most of the members of his unit giving up his life for an honour battle would sound like a waste but Cray had lived a long time and the honour of being remembered by the Smoke Jaguar Clan forever was something he could not give up.  Several hours later Cray Rabbit, eighty-two-year-old founder of the Rabbit Bloodhouse passed away from his injuries but his name would be remembered by both the Brotherhood of Randis and by Clan Smoke Jaguar.

Special Forces insertion
Herndon, Clan Lynx Occupation Zone
22nd May 3118

“Alright troops if any of you enjoy a show you might want to switch on your external feeds as we’re a few seconds from drop” the Hiryo Infantry Scout’s pilot said in the infantry bay there were four Kage battle armour suited troopers.  Beside the black painted Hiryo in the bay was a second identical vehicle with the same cargo, the DropShip was buffeted by the wind as the doors opened in mid-air. “Here comes the fun bit!”  The pilot announced as first one Hiryo and then the second were pushed out of the DropShip’s cargo bay.

Both forty-ton Wing-in-ground-effect (WiGE) vehicles hit the air and dropped like a stone.  The Hiryo like all WiGE vehicles were designed to operate close to the ground using a cushion of air to stay aloft but despite having pair of high wings and an aerodynamic chassis they were not designed to operate at high altitude.  The battle armoured troopers inside the DropShip were given a treat as the two Hiryo’s dived straight downwards “we need to get below radar fast hang on!” The two Hiryos continued to plummet towards the ground when they crossed five hundred metres a parachute deployed from the rear of the WiGEs slowing their fall then at three hundred metres the rear parachute fell away from the craft and two more deployed from the top of both vehicles.  These parafoils brought the two vehicles level as they continued to fall their weight ensuring they continued to fall at pace. At a little over one hundred metres the two craft started their fusion engines and blew away from the parafoils disappearing into Herndon’s undergrowth in opposite directions their mission to disrupt Clan Lynx’s hold on the planet.

---

On the other side of the Draconis Combine the six Ryuken Regiments deployed against Clan Snow Raven with two regiments each targeting Dnieper, Prinis Prime and Risin.  With two elite/veteran units hitting each planet the ground forces are overwhelmed and in the Risin system the Snow Raven WarShip Pheonix, a Spartan-class Cruiser, was destroyed by Draconis Combine WarShips.  In the Dnieper system the Draconis Combine vessel DCS Kashima, a Kirishima II-class Cruiser, was destroyed by the Snow Raven Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser Eden Rose.  With no vehicle or BattleMech production facilities and minimal Snow Raven population in the three systems the Snow Ravens withdraw deeper into their territory.

Raid in force
Zeta Quadrant
Periphery
28th May 3118

After years of allowing the Zeta Quadrant worlds to exist on their border the Cirincus Federation launches an assault against the planets intent on bringing the Quadrant into the Federation forcefully.  Deploying four regiments of troops to the four worlds Cirincus believes that it will be a walk over due to the Quadrant lacking significant defences.  On all four worlds the Cirincus attack is stopped by multiple lances of Star League-era Royal BattleMechs which steamroll the attacking forces seizing the salvage and their DropShips.  In all The Damned, Cirincus MechWorks, The Hateful Survivors, and the Keystone Gang are all wiped out to the man by the defenders of Zeta Quadrant.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Carrying on with the timeline proper now with the first part a race featuring the Vector Storm motorcycle from TRO Lancaster (Thank you to the creator and the permission to use it)

This update sets us down a course I've wanted to investigate for a long time - thankfully James Tanaga gave me an idea when discussing the Fire Mandrills current predicament and Clan Smoke Jaguar gave me the motivation for it (let's have some fun)

First Race of Solaris Racing League
Exhibition Track, Dunnet Forest
Solaris, Independent Clan Space
3rd June 3118

The coming of the Clans to Solaris had initially caused nothing but trouble for the Mech circuits and all the other sports based on the planet but that was not the case in recent years.  With the Clans and Star League Defence Force essentially sharing responsibility for the system everything was becoming more popular and that could not be truer than with the Solaris Racing League (SRL).  Following the smash success of the first season it had been decided that before the season began a high-performance racing aircraft would race against a Dreadnaught Interstellar Industries two wheeled Vector Storm V High Performance Motorcycle.  As the aircraft of the SRL were powered internal combustion engines it had been decided to use the enthusiast’s motorcycle instead of the pure racing fusion powered model the VI.  The spectacle was to promote the SRL but also the league’s sponsor Dreadnaught which would be putting on their own shows across the planet in conjunction with every race intending on promoting their civilian, support and military equipment across the planet.

Before the race there was an aerial display from a group of ten turbine propelled aircraft from Noisiel.  The exhibition team “Spiraling Zeros” fly a half red half white aircraft and put on some stunning flying displays above the crowds before the race even begins filling the air with multi-coloured streams of air.  These aircraft were far smaller than the aircraft used in the SRL and they were a throwback to some sort of ancient design.

The race itself was a simple affair Koskova Yartseva in her HL-15 Hellfish Light Attack Fighter would fly the regular Dunnet Forrest track with the Yartseva showing the crowd what they could expect when the actual race happened after while the Vector Storm which was designed to travel faster than the aircraft and at continue cruising at high speed would race around a longer track which went around the forest with its progress broadcast to all crowds on massive Tri-vid screens.  The Vector Storm and its driver Martha Alberchtsen were coloured blue and white while the aircraft was painted bright green setting the two apart.

The lights went green and the two racers took off on their respective race Martha Alberchtsen was hallway along its raceway while the Hellfish banked and turned around the twisty course through the forest.  On the screens the progress of the two exhibition racers were broadcast to an excited crowd as the motorcycle reached the half way point it was ahead of Yarseva exited Nevis Tunnel entering the Hillhead Stadium to a cheering crowd.  The Dreadnaught built Vector Storm was slightly ahead as it moved under the Interstate Highway 16 and began to climb up over Ben Hob this played to Hellfish’s advantage as it did not have to travel up the hill instead continuing its flight.

The Vector Storm entered the final stage of the race ahead of the Hellfish entering a modified Janet Porter Stadium the Hellfish banked above the motorcycle as it moved around the tight corners of the stadium having to move at a slower speed than the aircraft bringing the two to a near photo finish with the Hellfish moving across the finish line seconds before the Vector Storm.

Council of Clan Smoke Jaguar
Jaguar’s Howl, Twin Sons
District of Lesnovo, Free Worlds League
9th June 3118

While the reborn elements of Clan Smoke Jaguar held territory throughout the District of Lesnovo their primary holdings remained on Twin Sons in their capital city which had been built in the equatorial sector of the planet.  There more than one million men, women and children lived most of whom had been born in the District of Lesnovo or the greater Free Worlds League and flocked to the banner of Clan Smoke Jaguar.  Some would learn from the Clansmen and become warriors within the Clan while others would serve its growing worker, scientific and merchant castes unlike the original Clan Smoke Jaguar the current Clan allowed these castes to follow their own paths as long as they benefited the Clan.

Today all members of the Clan’s Bloodnamed castes had traveled to Twin Sons after being summoned there by Khan Petra Furey.  None of the warriors could miss the green and gold painted Arbitration-class Battleship Arbitration which served as the flagship of the fleet which was based out of Tukayyid and served as the Loremaster of the Clans personal transport.  The Arbitration could engage and destroy almost any other WarShip in known space with a good chance of victory and nothing the reborn Smoke Jaguars had could destroy the vessel.

For weeks the Smoke Jaguars streamed back onto Twin Sons making their way to Jaguar’s Howl finally entering the Hall of Clan Smoke Jaguar on the required date. The Hall of Clan Smoke Jaguar was a perfect circle and had five tiers of seating which went higher with each tier the lowest ranking Bloodnamed would be furthest from the centre and the higher ranks would be the closest.  Microphones and speakers were built into the entire building so any warrior who wished to be heard could be.  Today standing in the centre of the room stood Khan Petra Furey dressed in the ceremonial uniform which was grey with the Smoke Jaguar crest on its chest, a black belt and black knee-high boots the uniform’s full cape was also grey on the outside with red underneath while on her head Khan Furey wore the head of a Smoke Jaguar, the face of the snarling car above her own.  Beside her stood a shorter woman wearing a similar uniform but this one coloured green on her head she wore the head of a Wolf, the Clan she had come from.

“This is Loremaster of the Clans Sandra Ward” Petra Furey said introducing the other woman to the Clan’s elite warriors “she has traveled her from Tukayyid to address the elite warriors of Clan Smoke Jaguar.  Listen to her” she commanded them.

“I am Sandra Ward; I was born a Wolf but I now serve as the Loremaster of the Clans and of the Clan Council which is held on Tukayyid.”  She said “Tukayyid was the Clan’s greatest failure, where our invasion ended, now it is our greatest triumph a world held equally by all of the Inner Sphere and periphery Clans.”  She stepped around the room looking up at the assembled Smoke Jaguar warriors “your greatest failure came after Tukayyid when your Clan died” she snarled looking at them all “the Smoke Jaguars ceased to be, annihilated by the Inner Sphere here and in the Homeworlds, joining the ranks of the fallen Clans.”  She taunted almost daring them to challenge her to a Circle of Equals “but that was not the end of Clan Smoke Jaguar.” She continued “somehow your people, your ideals survived and now you are on the cusp of your greatest triumph.  Cast off the dressing your Clan has collected, come to Tukayyid, reclaim your place within the Clan Council.”

---

A week had passed since Sandra Ward, the Loremaster of the Clans, had made her challenge to Clan Smoke Jaguar and the debate between the Bloodnamed warriors was continuing.  Some of the warriors were angry that the Loremaster had challenged them to abandon their position in the District of Lesnovo and Free Worlds League while other Clans like the Mandrill Collective, Rasalhague Dominion and Raven Alliance had been allowed to maintain their connections to their partner realms and join the council.  Unfortunately for the Smoke Jaguars as Ward had explained in each case the Clan force was the dominant one, should the Clan decide the realm they were part of would cease to be, the Jaguars were not in that position with the Free Worlds League.  To rejoin the other Clans the Jaguars had to prove that it could stand on its own feet.

---

A week later the debate still raged between the members of the Bloodnamed council with no clear favourite in sight.  In her private office inside the Hall of Clan Khan Petra Furey spoke with her saKhan Vanik Ismiril who towered over her as she hatched a plan to sway her Clan to her line of thinking.  Born to an Elemental Sibko Ismiril like all of the genetically modified infantry troopers of the Clans was taller than any MechWarrior could ever be, his muscles literally had muscles and there were few equals to him in hand-to-hand combat.  Vanik’s dark skin was virtually hairless something he prided himself on maintaining it regularly.

“They will not miss me immediately.  The District’s politicians can run things day to day and the Clan is busy building up its forces and strongholds within this territory.”  She explained to him “once they do realize I have been gone too long there will be no choice but to reveal that I am no longer within the District.”

“At which point you will likely lose control over the District” Vanik boomed “I do not have the pool to maintain that for our Clan.” Petra Furey was a power of nature she was charismatic enough to sway many non-Clansmen to their cause.

“A necessary sacrifice” she said “you may be able to maintain control over the Clan however and with our enclaves across the District we will still hold some sway with the people of Lesnovo.  They allowed us into their space now we can take advantage of it.”  She said viciously smirking “use the people of Illion to help maintain security in the region, I will be taking the Streaking Mist, we will likely need her firepower.”

“But to turn to them, why make such a call?”

“Symbolism, our great rivalry put to bed for all to see once the truth is revealed our people together bringing what others have only dreamed.”  She said wistfully “the Loremaster said we needed to make a symbolic gesture to regain our position.  She was right we do and what better one for our people and all Clan peoples, it will win us support where we otherwise would not receive it.”

“And you believe they can be swayed, Quiaff?”

“Aff, outsiders far from the fight for Terra their Khan needs a symbol just as we do, we can prove that anything is possible I believe he will buy into that.”

   “And if he does not?”

“Then I die, and the Smoke Jaguar continues.”  She replied in a matter-of-fact way “this exhibition will not end our Clan but it could inspire its future.  Just keep the Jaguars on the prowl until I return” Petra Furey commanded her saKhan.

Training Mission
Dentieth Pass, Dustina
Arcturus, Clan Hell’s Horses Occupation Zone
14th June 3118

The green painted customized Timber Wolf cut through the formation of Hell’s Horses troopers but the OmniMech was not part of the scenario and its pilot was intent on killing as many of the Horses troopers as possible with its pulse lasers while calling in artillery barrages with its TAG laser.  Behind the Timber Wolf laid three of its gutted lancemates while a second lance of a Catapult, Adder, Ebon Jaguar and Shadow Hawk remained active in support.  In the air a Hawk Moth VTOL, Verwandlung, buzzed the Hell’s Horses formation.

Tearing their way into the Clan unit the Timber Wolf targeted a Mars Assault Tank which held the commander of the unit.  From one of the Hell’s Horses units paired particle cannon shots flew high above the Timber Wolf tearing through the air into the Verwandlung tearing the back of the aircraft off completely.  In the cockpit of the Timber Wolf Dominic Nostra turned to see the VTOL spin out of control and disappear over a hill exploding in a ball of flames in the trees beyond, this contract had already been too costly he turned the Timber Wolf back onto the Mars lining up the TAG Laser but as he did a pair of gauss rifles savaged the left side of the OmniMech.  “You son of a…” he cursed twisting his OmniMech onto the vehicle, an Athena Heavy Tank and unleashed a volley of pulse blasts.

The Athena took the attack and replied with two more gauss shots one fortunately missed the damaged Timber Wolf but the other slammed into the Bounty Hunter’s OmniMech just below the cockpit.  Lasers, missiles and autocannon slugs slammed into the Timber Wolf from the Mars Assault Tank causing damage all over the OmniMech as an artillery barrage from the Catapult consumed the Athena.  As it did a gauss rifle shot from the Athena tore through the head of the Bounty Hunter’s Shadow Hawk killing the red painted BattleMech’s pilot instantly.

“The Bounty Hunter won’t fall today” Nostra said turning his Mech’s torso savaging the side torso of a Fire Falcon OmniMech.  He then continued his turn and fired more shots into the Mars which sat at the centre of the formation but the large assault tank had kept its front armour towards him and the thick armour held firm.

“MechWarrior continue your assault; we are on our way to assist!”  Another transmission broke in from the Timber Wolf’s left flanking both the Bounty Hunter and the enemy Mars came a fifty-ton green and black painted Chalchiutotlin Urban Assault Vehicle its pulse laser and missiles engaging the heavier Mars but striking its weaker rear armour.

“Identify yourself!” Nostra demanded firing more pulse shots into the weakening Mars

“Arcturus Resistance, we may need a lift after this though!”

“You’re paying for your travel right now.”  Nostra confirmed guiding an artillery shell from the Catapult down on top of the Mars.  The vehicle was consumed in fire from the artillery shell as pulse laser fire from the Bounty Hunter and the resistance vehicle continued to pound the vehicle.  As pulse lasers burned through the armour of the Mars.  “Mission complete let’s go, resistance stay close.”

As they retreated through the formation of Hell’s Horses the Chalchiuhtotolin’s missiles, lasers and machine guns cut down enemy Elemental forces in their droves as they retreated.  The Bounty Hunter did not know where they had come from but the vehicle and its crew would be a worthy addition especially with the fall of Kafka.

Four of the Bounty Hunter’s team had been lost on this contract, the Bounty Hunter would need to start again.  Withdrawing into the Lyran Commonwealth Kafka’s support team agreed to take their retirement papers from the Bounty Hunter’s team and left the crew each of them agreeing to keep Nostra’s identity safe, knowing that should they betray that trust then they would pay the price with their lives.

Prison Breakout
Royal Foxx, Magistracy of Canopus
20th June 3118

Small arms fire filled the air as the small team tore through the prison facility.  Their goal simple reach the high security section of the prison at all costs, killing anyone who got in their way, rescue their lost MechWarrior and escape.  Sparks flew from ricocheting shots and bodies fell on both sides as the team pressed through the facility.  Entering the prison block the guards were shot down at their posts while the team entered.

“Release the prisoners, find Amanda” one of the troopers said turning back towards the doors aiming his gun towards the door.  Several of the others did the same while two headed into the cells gunning down another of the guards as they did.  A team of guards attempted to breach the prison only for them to be gunned down in a hail of bullets.  The lead trooper turned as his two troopers returned carrying a prisoner between them her face was a nasty mix of blue, red and purple from the beatings she had received but it was unmistakably Amanda Cavalcanti “good to see you.”   The masked leader said looking over the prisoner her navy jumpsuit was torn in several places and there was the hint of blood from injuries elsewhere too. “Those monsters, we’ll make them pay.”  He said glancing over her shoulder seeing several other prisoners “listen up you men and women, I don’t know why you are here or what you’ve done before today but you’re now free and you can come with us.  Or you can stay out of our way.”  Several of the prisoners moved to pick up weapons from the fallen guards readying themselves for a fight.

The troopers and former prisoners fought out the same way that they had come in fighting their way back out of the facility the same way they had entered gunning down more guards as they did.  Moving back to the loading facility they continued to fight their way out of the building where two BattleMechs stood gunning down any infantry forces trying to get too close.  Beyond them more Mechs stood engaging the defenders.  “All Malcontents this is McCoy package secured, mission accomplished, we’re loading onto the APC and we’re leaving.”  They then fought their way clear of the base and back to their waiting DropShip days later a JumpShip was ready to evacuate them from the system heading back towards Whittington.  War had been declared the day that the Magistracy of Canopus had taken Amanda Cavalcanti away from Schyler McCoy and this round the Malcontents had been victorious.

Nice to see things carrying on. Can't say I like  Rim name being dropped and more Clan society rising.

Good writing, Dragon Cat!

Unfortunately for the Inner Sphere there's a few Clan states

Insert drool here...

Read this one... a reveal I've been working on for a long time (created the planning document for this in 2013 - first update)

Gravesite Pilgrimage
Gamma 1551 AW
Deep Periphery
4th July 3118

Under the light of a yellow sun in a clearing on a battle-scarred jungle world once known as Barbados in the deep periphery two figures wearing full Star League-era combat armour with cloaks attached entered a small maintained grave site both carried flowers.  Across the planet there was wreckage from destroyed ships, BattleMechs and vehicles from a battle centuries before where thousands of people had died but not for conquest of the planet instead it was for the extinction of a people. Today there was no fighting instead it was a pilgrimage made by descendants of the survivors.

The two figures made their way through the grave site until they reached a grave surrounded by sixteen seats over the grave was an archway with nineteen totem animals, the totem animals of the Clans.  “Why do we keep coming back to this world?  When the clans have not returned here in decades.”  The male warrior asked glancing over at the woman he had brown hair which had grown longer than a standard military formation would allow he was in his thirties.  The woman was around his age she had long ginger hair which was tied back behind her head in a ponytail.

“Tradition” she replied “our ancestors died here to allow us to survive into today.”

“And soon we will be revealed to have survived” he said “and all of those survivors will curse our existence, not that there are many of them left.”  He continued looking over the archway above the grave.

“There are enough and they have expanded further than we could have expected, if we are revealed too soon, we will face trouble.”  She cautioned him “We won’t squander the chances we have and we will make the Clans remember our name.”

“Kerensky’s Wolf has their back turned focused on Terra” he said smirking savagely. “The Clans have lost their Homeworlds and soon will lose everything else, we should cleanse the Homeworlds too. There are Clans there which need taught lessons, perhaps we should target them first? Do what the Clans cannot.”

“Don’t get overconfident, one step at a time, the Clans have messed things up in the Homeworlds enough without us those worlds are not important right now.” The woman warrior said clearing flowers away from the gravesite replacing them with the flowers that they had brought with them.  “We are positioned to make our move on the Inner Sphere and stop the ilClan being formed” she said standing up looking back at the male warrior “we are the Inner Sphere’s only hope of stopping a Wolf led ilClan and if we stop one, rally the Inner Sphere, then we could stop them all.”

“There is so much Clan space now in the Inner Sphere.” He replied “we might get our revenge on Kerensky’s Wolves but the others are closing on Terra as well.”

“Aff, we could have moved sooner, helped the Inner Sphere, but we were not ready” she replied “you know this” she said becoming irritated by him they only had so much time to make their plan work.  Their teachings were clear their people had a duty to resist the formation of an ilClan at all costs.  The timeline of this intervention had changed with Clan Wolf moving their occupation zone away from the original invasion corridor now they could not simply position themselves between the Clans and Terra, now they needed to take another plan.

“Our people descend from those that suffered under the Usurper, suffered following the Great Father and then his despot of a son, we have the outcasts of the Dragon, those that pillaged the periphery and those who explored it.  We have perhaps the most diverse culture mankind has ever known.”

“And your point is?” The other warrior asked looking up at him from the grave.

   “When does the suffering end?”

“We have a mandate to follow, it has been the plan since our exile.”

“And when the Inner Sphere resists us?”  He asked looking at the female warrior “you know the Succession Lords will not simply turn over territory and the Spartans have learned that the Star League has not only been reformed but that it is powerful.”  He warned “I know our plan, and I support it, but our path isn’t as clear as it once was are we going to become the same conquerors that our Khan fought against.”  He asked invoking the title of the one and only Khan of their people, no-one had ever taken the title again after her death.

“On the bodies that are buried on this world and every other we have fought on we owe them to hold to the course.  We will show the Inner Sphere that our people can protect them from madness of Nicholas Kerensky!”  She snapped “enough of this, we came here for a reason, we must fulfil our purpose.”  She said turning back to the grave her eyes looking over the stone at the Wolverine head emblem engraved at the top it was a symbol of their past, and a symbol of their promise.

“Aff, Commanding-General Ebon” the other warrior said joining her in prayer.

Clan Hall, Goliath Scorpion Territory
Goldwater, Arizona
Deep Periphery
16th July 3118

Deep in the heart of Clan Goliath Scorpion Territory on the world of Arizona saKhan Connor Rood entered the Khan’s appointment hall of the Clan’s command Hall in the city of Goldwater.  While the Goliath Scorpions alongside the Blood Spirits had retaken several of the worlds in the Homeworlds they maintained their strongest hold on the colony world of Arizona which they held exclusively.

Today the righty year old saKhan Connor Rood entered his Khan’s office.  “My Khan” he said approaching Khan Freema Kirov the light of the office glistening off his shaved head.

“How go the Sand Runners?” The Khan asked using his command’s nickname

“Hellion Galaxy improves daily my Khan” Rood said looking at the Khan using the Galaxy’s adopted name the Galaxy had taken, of all the Goliath Scorpion units Rood’s Galaxy had the most orphans from former Clans with the majority coming from Clan Ice Hellion.

“And what brings you back to Arizona?” She asked despite Rood’s age he was a powerful man within the Clan.

“You brought me back to the Homeworlds now I want to pay it forward and bring other Clansmen back to the Homeworlds.”

“We do not have the resources to continue sending troops beyond the Homeworlds while the Society remains a threat.”

“There are men and women who were born as Clansmen.  I do not wish to take all of Hellion Galaxy only the First Cateran Cluster we will join with the Seekers, I know you have out there.  Our Clan needs trained troops” he said “and you need to get rid of me” he suggested “this will be my last mission for our Clan and I want to improve our strength not divide it.”

“We will not be able to continue to support these adventures, Quiaff?”

“Aff, my Khan I am aware. I will keep our command going by incorporating some of the warriors I redeem while sending others back to the Clan.”

“Agreed” Kirov said quickly “good luck saKhan” they both knew she saw him leaving Arizona as a way of removing any sort of challenge towards her leadership.

“I will make our Clan stronger” he said saluting her with his fist across his chest before leaving without another word.

Star League Deployment Base
Caph, Northwind EDZ
Star League Protectorate
21st July 3118

After four years on the far-off Magistracy of Canopus world of Gallis Colonel Janina el Arguioui was finding her way around her office.  The last four years had been a busy four years her command the Integrated Combat Support Services had assisted the SLDF in building a new base on the periphery world. What they had built essentially amounted to facilities that rivalled a Castle Brian.  The SLDF at present had a regiment based on the world which had taken over from her Integrated Combat Support Services but the facilities there could easily house a full Regimental Brigade and support it for months in a reinforced series of bunkers.  At present the plan was to share the facilities with the local Magistracy of Canopus troops but what was only known to the SLDF and the Integrated Services was that the SLDF could shut down certain parts of the base, namely those which the Magistracy troops would be assigned to, and not compromise the bases defences.  They could then drive out the Magistracy forces and retake the full base with minimal casualties.  Arguioui did not see that scenario being a problem at present the Magistracy of Canopus was a very strong supporter of the SLDF and was sending as many new recruits as any other member state.  Life had also been busy for Arguioui herself while in the Magistracy she had gotten married and had a daughter making life even more complicated.

“Colonel” Lt. Colonel Andreas Dandekar said from the door, he was her XO and the man who had turned the world of Caph into cleaner more habitable world while also expanding the forces she had left on Caph to nearly a full regiment of support workers.  As soon as Arguioui had returned to Caph she had promoted the man to Lt. Colonel for his efforts with her new family commitments she wanted to pass on more responsibilities to him after she negotiated a new contract with the SLDF.

“Yes, Andreas” she said turning towards him

“Commanding General Victor Focht, Colonel” he said stepping aside to reveal Victor Focht the commander of all of the Star League Defence Forces.  Andreas Dandekar was a mountain of a man an engineer before an officer he barely wore the official unit uniform instead favouring custom made overalls which he said fitted him better.  There was a joke around the unit he could match an Elemental in an arm wrestle while drinking the bar dry.  Their visitor was far smaller and looked slightly younger than the big man Victor Focht was a MechWarrior by training before rising through the SLDF ranks, she had planned to meet with him on Terra in a few months’ time, seeing him here was concerning.

“Welcome to Caph” she said greeting him he was her employer but not her superior due to her command’s continued status as a mercenary registered unit.

“Thank you, Colonel, congratulations to you on your marriage and the continued growth of your family” he said stepping into the office.  He wore the green day-to-day uniform of the SLDF with a red sash which was clasped by an SLDF Cameron Star.  “And congratulations to you as well Lt Colonel Dandekar on your promotion and your efforts here on Caph, you have done wonders here” he said looking at the other man who fought his body’s urge to blush in embarrassment.

“Your praise is greatly appreciated” Arguioui said attempting to cover for Dandekar.  “Thank you, Lt Colonel I’m sure you have duties to attend to.”

“Yes, Colonel” he said turning to leave the two in the room alone.

“Actually, Colonel would you mind if he stayed a moment?” Focht asked looking at the retreating Dandekar as he began to sit down.

“Of course, take a seat Andreas” the Lt Colonel nodded and sat down on a chair at the back of the room.  “Please Commanding-General” she said inviting him to continue.

“As I said you’ve done incredible work on Gallis and here on Caph” he said “you’ve gone far and beyond the terms of your contract.  You have done very well but now the SLDF wants more.”

“More?  Our people just spent four years in the arse end of the periphery” Arguioui explained unhappy with the prospect of further travelling for her unit. “We need time to rest and refit.”

“Absolutely, and we plan on giving you that time.  The Integrated Combat Support Services might never have to collectively leave Caph again.” Focht offered “Colonel, I don’t want your command to travel around the Inner Sphere, I want to use your skills and your resources to train the next generation of engineers who can build a future for humanity.”

“That sounds like a very long and expensive contract.” Dandekar remarked from the back of the room Focht turned towards him and smirked seeing the man’s motivations.

“I want to offer something greater than a contract” he said turning back towards Arguioui “I offer your people the chance to leave a legacy on the entire Inner Sphere.”

“You want to Company Store us?” Arguioui asked using the term when one of the Great Houses absorbed a mercenary unit into their forces.

“Not quite, you’re not in debt to us, instead you would become serving members of the SLDF” he said glancing over at Dandekar who looked more intrigued than worried.  Your unit would continue to do what it has done for its entire existence, there are hot spots out there that need work, units that need supported built up.”  He explained “the worlds that make up the Protectorate are some of the heaviest fought over worlds in the Inner Sphere some of them need cleaned up, others we wish to fortify along the lines of Gallis and who better to be in command of building it than those that built Fort Gallis and restored parts of Caph?”

   “That’s a lot of responsibility.”

“Yes, it is Colonel but your unit is one I think that can handle it.  As the command brigade of this new Division, I’d expect some of you to remain here continuing to restore Caph, coordinating the others and training new recruits.” Behind him he heard Dandaker make a noise, he clearly did not want to remain on Caph again.  “Others will want to take on challenges beyond Caph.”

“That’s quite an offer Commanding-General.” Arguioui stated “but my people are not fighters, we have minimal combat assets.  The SLDF go to hot spots where trouble follows.”

“I am aware which is why I am going to move the First Special Operations Group into your Division.  They will be the combat arm of your command, they can handle any unit in the Inner Sphere and Clans, but they also specialize in hot zone incident clean ups.”  He suggested the First Special Operations Group was originally formed by two mercenary commands the Devil’s Advocates and Killer Bees that specialized in asymmetrical warfare.

“Our people will have to discuss this before we agree” Arguioui said the Commanding-General nodded his understanding “but I am leaning to suggesting that they agree to the proposal.”  She said “I think our people have found a home with the SLDF.”  She said over Focht’s shoulder she could see Dandaker nodding his agreement.

“I will be on planet for at least a week Colonel, feel free canvass your troops before your decision.”

“Thank you, Commanding-General” she said raising from her chair Focht and Dandakar followed suit with Arguioui reaching out shaking Focht’s outstretched hand.  Focht turned away a moment later ready to shake Dandakar’s hand as well but the large Major was already standing at attention when he turned with perfect military precision he saluted the Commanding-General showing exactly where he believed the unit were going.

A week passed and the Integrated Support Services officially became part of the Star League Defence Force forming the core of a new support Division.  Colonel Janina el Arguioui remained in command of the unit taking a promotion to Lt. General with her responsibilities focusing on the command, recruitment, and training for further brigades for the Division, as part of these responsibilities she remained in overall command of the unit which was based on Caph and she was in charge of the continued clean-up of the planet.  Major Andreas Dandekar also received a promotion to Lt. Colonel taking over command of the newly formed Second Integrated Support Service Regimental Brigade which was formed primarily from the troops he had commanded on Caph during the unit’s deployment to Gallis.  The Second were being sent to Thorin with instructions to expand the SLDF fortifications and facilities on Thorin.

Forty-Fifth Star League Games
Solaris VII, Star League Stadium
Independent World
28th July 3118

In the history of humanity there were buildings that never slept, cities that were active throughout the day and night and then there was Solaris VII, the Game World, at no point in the year was the game world “quiet” there was never a day on Solaris in the entire year that you could not make a bet on a live game where a MechWarrior, pilot, vehicle crew or fist fighter were fighting or racing for the win.

Outside of the primary Solaris Game BattleMech season one competition had gained people’s attention the Star League Games since it was established in 3074 there had been forty-three previous engagements with forty-two winners.  Only in 3091 when the game had been interrupted by a terrorist attack and in 3093 when the games had been cancelled due to war commitments.  Originally taking place in Solaris’ Colosseum more recently it had taken place within the Star League Stadium, the newest and most advanced of all the stadiums on Solaris.

The competition itself was open to everyone, as Solaris was jointly held by the Star League Defence Force and the Clans, and warriors from across known space traveled to the games to test themselves against other competitors. Due to it being an arena battle the regulars on the Solaris often did well but visitors to Solaris also had as good a chance as anyone who made their livelihood on the game world.

This year the competition was dominated by visitors with exclusively Clansmen making it through to the final battle.  Star Captain Robin Kerensky of Clan Wolf, Star Commander Warner of Clan Coyote and MechWarrior Hampus of Clan Nova Cat were the final three standing warriors with Robin Kerensky’s Timber Wolf, Warner’s Linebacker and Hampus’ Shadow Cat the last fighters.

During the battle with his short-range missile system empty Hampus Nova Cat ran circles around the two other OmniMechs sniping at them with the paired extended-range large lasers on his own forty-five-ton machine.  With the traditional dueling rules of the Clans abandoned in the melee of fighting the two heavier Mechs tried to split fire against each other and the speeding Shadow Cat.  The Nova Cat warrior continued to move and hit the other two Mechs wearing them down with pin-point laser fire which degraded thee two enemy OmniMechs to the point that they could no longer fight.  The with neither other two warriors were able to concentrate on one enemy the two heavier OmniMechs fell leaving only one winner.  A secret held by Hampus Nova Cat and his support crew was that Hampus was a member of a new breed of MechWarriors and was known as an “Elstar.” A trueborn MechWarrior bred to be better than the previous generation by focusing on one aspect of warfare in Hampus’ case this additional training was in the accuracy of his laser shots.  All of the Clans had begun to breed “specialist” MechWarriors and only time would tell if they were superior to the regular trueborn warriors.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I'm going to post this with crossed fingers that the forum remains - I'm sure many of you who read here have read on the BT forum but just in case there are those of you who only read here. Well here we go

In the tradition of this timeline I'm going to start this entry with a "Thanks" this time to the author of the excellent Project Lancaster Sumaire_STi who allowed me to borrow a unit or two and Dreadnaught Interstellar Industries for this AU.  In the next update a fun new Battle Armour the Vixen makes its debut.

Canon materials also continue to influence this AU and a couple of them appear in this update too

First Class, Battle Armour Orientation
Cameron-Jones Battle Armour School, Wallis
District of Regulus, Free Worlds League
9th August 3118

The class of fifty-two cadets stood at attention as the next class of battle armour cadets waited for their training commandant to arrive.  In front of them stood a single battle armour suit which had a large double-barrelled weapon over its right shoulder it was a new design built by a new Dreadnaught Interstellar Industries Battle Armour plant here on Wallis named the Vixen BA-X1.  The Vixen which was at present being sold exclusively to the District of Regulus was planned to become the primary light battle armour suit for the armed forces units raised by Regulus.

After a few minutes the Commandant stepped out he was a large barrel of a man with a completely bald head.  “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Jim Montgomery the Commandant of this training facility welcome to the Cameron-Jones Battle Armour School of Wallis.  Together you will be assigned to this school’s training unit the First Battle Armour Regiment you will learn how to pilot, how to fight and how to operate Battle Armour tactics here on Wallis before being transferred to units based across the District of Regulus.”  He explained to the gathered cadets the term ladies and gentlemen was a loose one with forty-four women standing in the formation and only six men that was due to the Vixen’s design which favoured smaller users and was incapable of being worn by troopers of a larger frame.  “This is the Vixen BA-X1 you will become intimately familiar with this design during your time here at this college.  You will then take it into battle as members of the Regulan Defence Force.”  He said as the trooper began to move forwards between the assembled cadets down the middle of the assembly hall.  “The Vixen is able to jump one hundred and twenty metres in a single bound, it is coated in stealth armour and armed with two over-shoulder David Light Gauss Rifles for striking enemy units.”

In the crowd watching Duchess Rene Cameron-Jones the seventeen-year-old daughter and heir to Prince Lester Cameron-Jones stood.  Up until three months before she had lived in the District of McKenna with her mother Duchess Saadia Cheynov the Prince’s former wife.  On her return to Regulus Rene had demanded that she be allowed to serve the nation of her birth and her father had agreed to allow her to serve in the growing Battle Armour Corps. Looking at the Battle Armour suit Rene watched as the trooper reached up towards the shoulder mounted weapon as they did a handle lowered to meet the glove and the trooper was able to guide the weapon. Rene watched as the trooper turned scanning the gathered troopers its arm on the weapon, she immediately disliked the look having to use an arm to control the weapon was a serious design limitation.  But she had volunteered for this, her father had swayed Dreadnaught Interstellar Industries to build factory here in the District of Regulus and she would make the most of the new design.

Border skirmishes
Capellan March, Federated Suns
19th August 3118

With Federated Suns units out of position in the Capellan March attending training exercises the Capellan Confederation and Taurian Concordat raid multiple worlds in force.  As part of a coordinated strike the Capellan Confederation strikes at the Ziliang salient while the Taurian Concordat strike at border worlds.

In the Ziliang Salient the Capellans find the Eighth New Avalon Guards RCT, multiple militia regiments and mercenary commands.  Hit on multiple worlds and by overwhelming force the Eighth folds under the pressure as they attempt to resist the incoming Capellans.  With Capellan WarShips supporting the ground forces the Capellans quickly cement control over Uraven, Valhas, Homestead and Immenstadt leaving only Ziliang and Ambergrist standing in the face of the Capellans.  With no major industry on either world the Capellan March’s High Command order Ziliang and Ambergrist abandoned by the AFFS leading to a mass exodus from the population who flood the spaceports looking for a way off the planet before the Capellans gain full control.

While not as successful as the Capellan attacks the Taurian Concordat are able to secure control over Brockway, Mithron and Amber Grove along their border.  Attacks against Hyalite, Lothir and Brusett are unsuccessful but it shows where the Taurians wish to expand.  From the Federated Suns point of view the resistance to the Taurian attacks is minimal, each of the systems targeted formerly belonged to the Taurians and the Federated Suns had invested minimally in the worlds since their conquest maintaining what was there but adding little else.

Trial of Possession
Fletcher’s Feast, Core Territory
Nova Cat’s Den, Periphery
23rd August 3118

Days after the capture of Xenia in the Federated Suns by Clan Nova Cat in a Trial of Possession the Federated Suns surprised Clan Nova Cat with a deep raid targeting the world of Fletcher’s Feast.  The world of Fletcher’s Feast had been part of the Nova Cat’s Den since its foundation when the Clan invaded what was the Tortuga Dominions and destroyed the pirates who inhabited the world.  The world had historically been too warm for human habitation, the limited water and vegetation had kept numbers down and life harsh but it also had great deposits of metals which the pirates had found useful so a continuous stream of people had been brought into the system.

In the time that Fletcher’s Feast was a pirate world the world had been the site of ammunition and petroleum production facilities but since the Nova Cats had come to the system the facilities the Federated Suns troops found there staggered them. Small settlements which once dotted the landscape had been replaced with massive cities which housed hundreds of thousands of people. The old facilities were still there with the petroleum refinery expanded and the ammunition production facilities expanded to supply the Nova Cat war machine dozens of buildings produced all the types of ammunition needed beside them was an extensive live fire area.  The Nova Cats had built an area dedicated to science with their own firing ranges, along with a massive aerospace fighter training complex with ground and orbital facilities catering for recruits.  Alongside the aerospace training complex was the largest Bavros Bloodhouse Sibko in the entire Nova Cat’s Den.  Against the backdrop of all these changes for the last sixty years a terraforming facility had turned the too warm windswept world into a greener one with rivers and lakes where previously there were none before.  While not the perfect world Fletcher’s Feast was thriving compared to when it had been a pirate world.

As the Overlord-class DropShip came down to land at the spaceport a solitary Naga II OmniMech stood opposing the incoming DropShip.  The Mech was painted with light blue arms and legs which were dotted with red stars the torso was painted in blue, yellow and green colours which were diagonally stripped with stripes leading from each arm and leg towards the centre of the torso the head structure was painted red. “I am Star Colonel Lucian, of Clan Nova Cat, I command the Fourteenth Nova Cat Vision Cluster which defends Fletcher’s Feast who brings this trial to this soil and what do you bring with you?”

“This is Major Daniel de Oliveira of the Federated Suns Rabid Fox Ninth team we declare a Trial of Possession for this system in the name of the Federated Suns.”  The male’s voice replied “I bring two companies of BattleMechs and a mixed company of vehicles and battle armour suits to this trial.”

“I counter this bid with a Supernova Trinary, and three Combined-arms Trinaries.”  The Nova Cat Warrior countered as the Overlord continued to vent gasses on the landing pad none of the doors had opened yet.  The combined forces of the Fourteenth Vision would easily be enough to counter the Battalion of troops the Federated Suns had taken to the battle even if they were an elite unit.

“These trials have been beneficial to both our peoples, we should not be wasteful of lives and equipment, I will counter this bid with my command company augmented by two Battle Armour Platoons.” Daniel de Oliveira said challenging the Nova Cat command to lower their bid reducing the number of combatants to twelve BattleMechs and thirty-two Battle Armoured troopers. Due to the ongoing trials with Clan Nova Cat all Federated Suns commanders had been instructed to attempt to minimise the damage caused by the trials and minimise losses in equipment and personnel.

“I will bid a single Supernova Binary augmented by a single point of aerospace fighters” Lucian said bidding ten BattleMechs and twenty-five Battle Armour troopers and two aerospace fighters, the aircraft were a simple addition which he would only use in an observation capacity, they would only come into play if the Federated Suns troops broke Zellbrigen

“Well bargained and done.” De Oliveira said ending the bidding as the Clans preferred, the more they honoured the Clan way the more likely they would get the result they wanted.

“The Trial will take place in three hours on the Steam Plains to the west of this spaceport.  You are invited to explore the Plains during the preparation time.”  Lucian explained before turning his Naga II OmniMech away from the Overlord.
The Steam Plains were a by-product of the terraforming process the water reserves buried deep within the planet had been released into the warm planet causing a near constant steam haze over the area.  The area would interfere with communications, sensors, and missile guidance the Nova Cat troops trained in the region regularly and it was only fair to allow the visitors into the area.

---

Three hours and thirty minutes later the two sides were in the middle of a huge battle and Star Colonel Lucian’s Naga II was in the heart of it.  Surrounded in weapons fire and steam Lucian leaned to the right and opened fire with his assault LB-X Autocannon filling the air between Lucian’s Mech and a Federated Suns Centurion tearing open the side of the fifty-ton BattleMech. Through the steam the Centurion attempted to avoid further fire but the Naga II’s Streak equipped short range missile rack maintained a lock further damaging the enemy Mech. Autocannon and laser fire from the Centurion flew back on the Naga II but the assault OmniMech’s armour could take it standing his ground Lucian added lasers to his counter attack not everything connected but enough did to end the Centurion’s fight.

“Star Colonel, Point Three, the remaining Federated Suns forces are combining fire.” The Huntsman pilot off to his right reported Lucian twisted his Naga’s torso seeing what the pilot was reporting seeing an Enforcer III and JagerMech III targeting the Huntsman he opened fire with his Mechs lasers on the JagerMech intending on assisting the Huntsman pilot while switching comm. frequencies.

“Archangel Point, Immolation Protocol” he ordered the two orbiting Scytha OmniFighters.  With the order given the two pilots dived into combat the two ninety-five-ton aircraft were loaded with short range missiles which were equipped with inferno munitions and plasma cannons.  The two craft dived through the steam targeting Federated Suns units setting the OmniMechs on fire and burning down Battle Armour squads where they stood. The two fighters using the steam as cover dived through the battle laying down short range missile and plasma fire before repeating the pass covering the targets in more fire until every Federated Suns unit was covered in inferno jelly. The tactic was a dishonourable one but Lucian was content with the fact that the Federated Suns had broken the rules of Zellbrigen first and now the Nova Cats would finish the fight. With their BattleMechs overheating the Federated Suns troops found it harder and harder to defend themselves against the Nova Cat attacks. Unable to effectively fight the remaining MechWarriors surrendered the trial leaving the Clansmen in control of Fletcher’s Feast. After the fighting and the final fighter attack only eight of the Federated Suns pilots and troopers survived the battle.

Meeting Room, Abandoned Firebase
Voltenna Island, Dieron
Star League Protectorate
29th August 3118

The military facilities of Dieron had largely been decommissioned following the District’s absorption into the Star League Protectorate.  All the surviving military units had been recalled to their primary bases to be re-organised as Star League Defence Force units this had left plenty of spare bases for those needing a place to think and move forward with their lives. One such warrior was Tai-sa Harold Nakayama who had served the District of Dieron before being critically injured and evacuated to Dieron.

While receiving the best of care from the District and Star League doctors Harold Nakayama had learned the truth regarding the war with the Rasalhague Dominion how the Draconis Combine had started the conflict using a mercenary unit to conduct a false-flag operation. Although he had been offered a commission as a Major within the Star League Defence Force Harold had refused the commission instead, he had taken his family-owned Archer and retreated to this firebase.  In the last few months, he had assembled nineteen others who felt the same way as he did and now it was time to declare their intentions.

Although his dark hair was beginning to lose its colour, turning grey with age, he still wore it in the traditional Draconis Combine topknot he wore a traditional Draconis Combine outfit which was coloured brown and had no insignia.  Entering the meeting room, he saw the other nineteen members of the command “Thank you for all attending” he said “you have all decided that you cannot continue to serve with the Dieron Regiments now that they are joining the Star League Defence Force.  You all agree that while the Rasalhague Dominion ravaged our nation that it was the Draconis Combine and their mercenaries that truly doomed our nation.”

“Death to the mercenaries!” Several of the gathered members called out in unison echoing a call once made by Coordinator of the Draconis Combine Takashi Kurita. It was a call that had been made after the Wolf’s Dragoons embarrassed the DCMS by standing up to them and resisting their efforts to destroy the unit.

“We will have no support in our mission” Harold Nakayama warned “Nakayama’s Blood will be a command with no home and no lord. We will be Ronin warriors.” He said meeting each of the MechWarriors eyes making sure they understood exactly what they were proposing.  They would take what they wanted and they would hunt down mercenary commands, specifically those under contract with the Draconis Combine but all such units would be forfeit in the eyes of the command.”

“Death to the mercenaries!” The group called out a second time this time all of them had spoken together.
“Your call is heard; I have spoken to a JumpShip captain he is willing to ferry us and our DropShips between the stars. Our hunt is on.” He said the Nakayama’s Blood, Ronin warriors, were now alone cutting their ties with their past they looked for revenge against those who they believed had wronged them intending on taking what they needed from their targets. To show their disdain for the nation that had destroyed their home every BattleMech in the command was one which had been produced within the District of Dieron or Draconis Combine and the entire unit was devoid of Clan technology.

Border skirmish
Fujidera, District of Oriente
Free Worlds League
6th September 3118

During what should have been a confidence boosting trip around the District of Oriente the twenty-four-year-old leader Duchess Sophie Halas becomes embroiled in a border skirmish with raiders from the Capellan Confederation.  While the defenders of the world, the Sixth Fusiliers of Oriente Regiment, seemed to have the battle in hand the Duchess chose to join the battle appropriating a sixty-ton Anzu BattleMech from the Sixth’s stores.  While she was trained as a Land-Air-Mech pilot Sophie was more than capable of piloting the heavy Mech and had joined the Sixth’s battle line.

The chain of events which followed were the result of a chain of failures from Oriente Intelligence and a well-crafted plan by the Capellan Confederations Maskirovka.  Drawing the Duchess and her protection lance into a battle which they could not immediately disengage they trap the unit in place with a suppression barrage of artillery which cuts the Duchess off from the Sixth Fusiliers of Oriente.

Sophie Halas fights for her life as the Capellan Confederation pour in fire from every side in a slowly tightening noose as the Sixth attempts to break through with reinforcements. In a battle that essentially guts the Sixth’s fighting strength as it attempts to battle through the thick artillery screen.  Three hours into the battle autocannon flak penetrates the Anzu’s cockpit and Sophie Halas, Duchess of the Oriente Protectorate, is instantly killed inside the sixty-ton BattleMech.

With their Duchess dead on the battlefield and the Sixth torn to pieces by their multiple attempts to penetrate Capellan Confederation lines the battle turns into a rout with District of Oriente forces streaming towards their DropShips in retreat and disarray.  A raid and assassination attempt becomes an occupation as the Capellan forces allow the Oriente forces to retreat.

---

Three days later a flustered aide rain into the Mechbay where Ralph Halas was assisting technnicians on one of the Halas family Persus OmniMechs.  “Sire! I bring important news on your sister” the young dark-skinned woman shouted up towards him. Ralph stood on a gantry watching the techs, he wore his blonde hair down to his shoulders and wore a grey jumpsuit, he looked down at the woman who wore a grey suit.

“What is it, Amanda?” He nearly snapped, the last thing he needed to hear was how his big sister was growing her strength in the District of Oriente. He had a lot of respect for her but he also believed she was stumbling in the dark as she attempted to lead their small nation.

“Sire, the Capellans ambushed her unit on Fujidera, she was killed in the ensuing firefight.” She reported “the Capellans have taken over the planet and driven off our people. I’m sorry for your loss.”

“Where is Javier?” He demanded immediately asking about his twin brother they were both twenty-one years old, almost twenty-two as he had reminded his sister several times, neither had enlisted in the military but both had received extensive BattleMech training even after their joyride in 3100.  Both their father and elder sister had insisted they knew how to defend themselves.

“I… I… I don’t know sire” she stammered over the words

“Find him!” He shouted “Now!” Amanda ran off as quickly as she could.  Ralph was right to be concerned, an aide of Javier’s had informed him of their sister’s death at approximately the same time and already Ralph was in the process of contacting media outlets not to commemorate their sister’s passing but to declare himself the rightful ruler of the District of Oriente.  Ralph, on hearing of his brother’s actions, acted quickly and declared himself the true ruler which sets the two brothers on a collision course.

As the District of Oriente teeters on the brink of invasion and potentially civil war elsewhere in the Free Worlds League Duke Anson Marik, the eldest child of Captain-General Joseph Marik and Duchess Lucy Marik, joins the District of Marik’s military training program.

Ruling Council Meeting
Jetheitania, Zeta Atheni
Zeta Quadrant Periphery
11th September 3118

The four leaders of the Zeta Quadrant worlds were sat in their council chambers on the outskirts of Jetheitania when the doors opened and a tall figure wearing a full set of infantry combat armour with a grey cloak which was draped over the uniform and over their face strode past the two guards who stood just outside the door. The cloak was open at the front but it was still closed enough to conceal any markings. “Thank you for gathering.” The cloaked figure said by her voice they could tell she was a woman but nothing else “I am here to inform you that the mercenary units within your nation have been disarmed. Most of them realized they were outgunned and surrendered with little or no loss of life…”

“Glad to see the money we paid them meant so much” Richard Mashida said interrupting the figure, he was dressed in a navy-coloured suit.

“…they were hopelessly outgunned. Those that resisted died with no chance of survival.” The figure said continuing.

“With our agreement made we will now take over full responsibilities for your defence.” She explained “you will continue to be the face of your planets. You will inform anyone who asks that you are still defended by the same mercenaries that previously defended you.”

“But if you have the power that you claim, we could be far better placed!” Council member Rachel Marshand protested, their new partners claimed to have great power, enough to resist the Cirincus Federation and nearby Rim Collection.

“Council woman this will be your one warning.” The figure said “any deviation from our instructions will result…” she suddenly stopped speaking looking at them she removed her cloak revealing she had white, near albino, coloured skin, someone who had spent little to no time under a planet’s sun. She had ginger coloured curly hair which was pulled back and tied into a pony-tail and she appeared to be in her thirties. “A warning with words is not enough I can see, fine” she said with some finality she drew her sidearm aimed it at them and fired four times in rapid succession striking each of the council members in the chest with a slug throwing weapon. The figure did not make a step but turned on the spot and dropped to one knee as the two guards rushed inside, she didn’t hesitate and fired twice more gunning down both men in rapid succession.

Standing back up she glanced over the dead council members again for a moment before re-holstering her weapon and drawing out a communicator. “One to Two, Elections” she said before turning on the spot and marching out.  That afternoon the four former members of the council were reported lost in an atmospheric aircraft crash in Zeta Atheni’s atmosphere. In the days and weeks that followed four new “Ruling” members were elected to the Council each of them was far more agreeable to the changes which had been made to the nation. While each of them had lived on their homeworlds for their entire lives all four were not just natives of the worlds but also agents of the new ruling force. Their first ruling was that the four ruling council members could not be on the same aircraft atmospheric or aerospace in the future. To maintain the ruse that Zeta Quadrant was defended by the same forces than previously the mercenary unit’s forces were used as part of the defence force and all their colours were adopted by any newly arrived forces.

Landing Sequence
Raider’s Roost, Tortuga Prime
Nova Cat’s Den, Periphery
20th September 3118

In formation four Union-C type DropShips each bearing the crest of Clan Smoke Jaguar burned towards the surface of Tortuga Prime landing near the former capital of the planet Raider’s Roost.  When they had arrived in the system Khan Petra Furey, the leader of Clan Smoke Jaguar, had identified herself as a passenger of the lead vessel. She asked for and was granted Safcon and allowed to land around a barracks facility on the planet’s surface. The long journey from the Free Worlds League to the Nova Cat’s Den had been a hard one Khan Petra Furey was not a fan of space travel at the best of times and was just glad to have a planet under his feet even if it was a desolate rock like Tortuga Prime.

All the Smoke Jaguars knew about Tortuga Prime came from the information brought to the Smoke Jaguars by the rogue Nova Cat unit, the Fifteenth Battle Cluster, they knew that Tortuga Prime had been the first world of the former Tortuga Dominions captured by the Clan but that they had all but abandoned it turning it into a live-fire range. That was not to say that there was no population on the planet, there were several thousand people who lived in the system. These people were captured prisoners of the Nova Cat Clan who had not adapted to Clan life, raiders, pirates, members of their own Dark Caste were often marooned there, they were given enough supplies to survive and live their lives but otherwise left to their own devices. To secure the system the Nova Cat’s had often up to two Clusters of Warriors on the planet to maintain order and stop all out wars breaking out between the factions, while a WarShip or multiple assault DropShips were also assigned to the system ready to shoot down anyone who attempted to rescue those that had been left on the planet.

---

For three days the Smoke Jaguars were made to wait in a barracks facility which the Nova Cats maintained on the base.  From what her people could tell, based on items left on the base, the Nova Cats had previously held a Federated Suns command at the facility. Walking around the facility Khan Petra Furey was getting more and more annoyed by the wait before there was noise outside the facility looking out the windows, she saw a group of Nova Cat OmniMechs and Elementals burning down towards the surface. “A little show from our hosts” she whispered seeing the Dragon Cat OmniMech in the lead coming in for a landing, the seventy-ton OmniMech was painted black with gold and red highlights like a Nova Cat’s mane when it was ready to attack. “Welcome Khan Rosse” she said satisfied she had gotten the response from the Nova Cat’s she had expected.

Soon afterwards Khan Canin Rosse and his security force entered the facility. There were other Nova Cats here before he had arrived but they had given the Smoke Jaguars a wide berth so far now she was face to face with a Khan of another Clan, one which was far superior to her own. “Welcome to Tortuga Khan Rosse” Petra Furey said as the Khan entered. The two of them could not be more different Khan Canin Rosse was eighty years old, while he looked healthy, fit, content with his position, and he appeared to have seen a lot he also had many of the scars to prove it, he was dressed in a plain black-and-gold coloured jumpsuit while Petra Furey was twenty-eight years old, full of energy, drive and desire. Her jumpsuit was grey in colour but she had fur lined over the shoulders and down the arms, it wasn’t Smoke Jaguar fur but it was a star and a link to what her people needed to be, what the Founder had designed them to be.

“Thank you, Khan Furey, you are a long way from home” he noted entering the meeting room, the room doubled as a mess hall for Furey’s people while they were here. They had moved the tables and chairs which were in the room to the far side. “It is impressive that you were able to make it to Tortuga without being detected” he said walking between the Jaguars who were with Furey “and you have brought interesting company.” He said stopping beside a young woman with short blonde hair and a denim jacket over her jumpsuit on the shoulder was a unit patch the insignia of Clan Nova Cat with a BattleMech’s silhouette superimposed over it and the number “15” above it. “You MechWarrior are too young to be a member of the Fifteenth Battle Cluster.” He said ignoring Petra Furey to look at the woman who could not have been older than twenty-five years old.

“Aff” she responded looking at him “I am Star Captain Kimberly Higall, Lost Ones Cluster, Liger Warriors Galaxy. ovKhan” she answered using the term to honour her superior.

“Higall is a Nova Cat name, for a Nova Cat unit.” He said nodding towards the unit patch.

“I took my grand-father’s name Khan Rosse, I have fought with honour under his name.” She said defiantly.

“I believe you, but you are not a Bloodnamed warrior yet.” He said turning back to Khan Petra Furey “as I said Khan Furey you have impressed me enough to listen to you.”

“I need your assistance Khan Rosse” Furey said watching the older Khan’s movements around the room before he returned to where he first stood. “A representative of the Clan Council approached my Clan and intimated that it may be time for the Smoke Jaguars to re-join Clan society.” She explained

“I am a member of that Council; and I am aware of this offer.”

“Good, but my people are not ready for this yet.” Furey said glancing down not out of shame but in thought “my people need a true link to our Founder.” She explained raising her arms “you are correct Khan Rosse I did bring the descendants of your Fifteenth Battle Cluster on this mission because they are a link to our past as a true Clan. But I also want some true links to being the Clans and to make a bold statement about our return.”

“A worthy goal” Rosse said approvingly but giving away nothing with his words or his body language instead the elder Khan stood still resting. She was able to study him while his age was advanced and there were signs of deterioration he still stood steadily and proudly, she had little doubt he could fight right now if he needed to. Other Clans, her Jaguars included would relegate warriors his age to garrison duty, but the Nova Cats had always continued to use their warriors beyond others.

“I want to prove to the Clans that the Jaguars are ready to take their place within our society and that we can prove our worth.” She explained “unfortunately I need Nova Cat resources to complete the mission I have in mind.”

“Which is?” Canin Rosse asked his curiosity peaking as she began to explain her thoughts.

“I will not disclose it now, but I will credit the victory to your Clan as well as mine” she promised him, Rosse did not look convinced by the promise of words. “I will also offer you the rights of isorla, for anything your Clan wishes to salvage from the mission.”

“You believe your prize will be of interest to us?” Rosse wondered out loud as Furey continued to speak.

“Aff, you will find what I want to target to be very interesting. But to sweeten the deal I am willing to give your scientists access to our Advanced Gun System immediately.” She offered the Mech-sized weapons were half the weight of normal weapons. While they had limited applications, they did give different weapon options to standard BattleMechs which could offer tactical options.

“And what is it you need from my Clan to prosecute this mission?”

“Your Clan’s Storm and Dezgra.” She said smiling broadly as she saw she had caught the elder Nova Cat Khan by surprise.

“Why would you need either of those units?” Rosse asked the Nova Cat’s Dezgra command was the Third Watch Cluster, they were so named because of their use of BattleMechs, Battle Armour and vehicles which employed stealth armour and sneak attacks directly against the rules of Clan honour.  While the Storm was the Nova Cat’s one and only operational Bug-Eye class vessel a ship which was useless in combat but vital in intelligence gathering missions.

“A mission of the utmost importance, and one with rewards that cannot be underestimated.” She promised him “it will not be without peril; we may lose some of our assets but we will gain rewards which I guarantee none of the Clans in the Clan Council have access to from a place that none of the Clans have been willing to go.”

“You have piqued my interest. What naval escorts will our people have?” Rosse asked now honestly willing to consider the operation.

“I have none to give.” Furey admitted “I will use the Storm to scout for our JumpShip and avoid any targets.”

“There may be naval assets at your target quiaff?” Rosse challenged now angry that the Smoke Jaguar leader was being so cavalier about her apparent important mission.

“Aff” she admitted “we can only take what we have to take.”

“And if there is a hardened asset over your target? Will you run away with your tail between your legs?” He challenged her stepping closer “or do you want to fight? I have naval assets I can detach to assist in your quest.”

“In exchange for what? I have nothing else to give you Khan Rosse. My Smoke Jaguars while proud are not the Clan which was your Clan’s equal once. We are rebuilding I want to complete this mission to help in that not squander more strength.” She said becoming angry at the suggestion.

“Information on your mission, what we could encounter? And what you are looking for? And blood.” He said looking at the younger Khan and the others in the room. “I will maintain the secrecy of what you plan until you are ready to release the information.” Petra turned and walked away from Khan Rosse angrily flailing her arms in the air as she moved, other members of her Clan get out of the way allowing her to move around the room. The thing that angered her the most was that she knew he was right.

“I wish to return to Huntress.” She said looking away from Khan Rosse before turning around “I wish to salvage at least one ProtoMech assembly line for my Clan.”

“You could salvage that anywhere, Quineg?” Rosse asked confused Huntress was a lofty goal but it could not be the only reason.

“Neg, I want one that the Smoke Jaguars built, we pioneered the technology, I want our birthright back.” She said “I also want to salvage any Society or Clan technology we encounter in the Homeworlds and gain intelligence.” She explained “we will give that to the Clan Council as our giftake when we re-join the council.  As for blood I will not dilute what we have before we head on our mission.”

“Tortuga is a testing world each of you that claims a Bloodname will fight for that honour. If you succeed the Nova Cat Clan will recognize you as being a founder of that line within Clan Smoke Jaguar giving you the honour of the Bloodnamed in the eyes of all the Clans. Those that fail will be consigned to history, you may retain your names in your own company but we will not recognize them.” He explained looking at all the warriors “as for blood” he said drawing a dagger from his belt opening his left palm he drew the dagger across his palm. “You are so challenged”

“Well bargained and done Khan Rosse” Khan Petra Furey said drawing a dagger of her own agreeing to the Khan’s terms taking up the challenge, each of her warriors did the same.

---

Over the course of the next week each of the members of the Clan Smoke Jaguar party fought against members of Clan Nova Cat in simulated battles. Many of the warriors had been defeated in battle but eleven including Kimberly Higall had been successful so far. Today Khan Petra Furey herself proved that she was the warrior that they all believed in.
Moving her Shadow Cat OmniMech through the urban battlefield on the outskirts of Raider’s Roost the forty-five-ton OmniMech’s advanced active probe tracking a fast-moving Nova Cat Locust IIC. She twisted the OmniMech’s torso expecting the Locust to appear but nothing appeared “damned ECM!” She snapped realizing she had been tracking a fake signature as she realized the Locust IIC ran past her Mech’s back spitting fire pulse laser at the Shadow Cat’s back. Petra Furey launched her OmniMech into the sky carried by its jump jets twisting the Mech as it took off Furey opened fire with both arm mounted lasers, one of the green lasers burned down the side of the Locust while the other went wide. The Shadow Cat came in for a landing and Petra continued to stalk the lighter Mech, even though the Locust IIC was half the size of the Shadow Cat the pilot was clearly one of the Nova Cat’s best.  Choosing an aggressive strategy, she ran the OmniMech through the ruined city making herself a harder target, the Locust was faster and was shrouded by ECM but the Shadow Cat had advanced sensors and Furey was confident in her abilities.

As she prowled the area searching for her prey the two Mechs stumbled into each other on one of the broken streets. The Locust pilot unleashed a volley of pulse lasers the sensors indicating that had they been at full strength they would have burned several parts of the armour but failed to penetrate the armour. Petra’s returned fire with a simulated gauss rifle shot which simulated a torso hit, the gauss slug would have penetrated deeply into the Locust and damaged the fusion engine irreparably. With the Locust disabled Petra had proven that she was a Clan MechWarrior in the eyes of her peers but that was not enough, moments later a Goshawk II walked past the disabled Locust and opened fire with its large laser and pulse lasers the large laser went over the low-slung Shadow Cat while the pulse lasers pitted the armour in several places.

With the gauss rifle recharging Petra opened fire with both lasers causing simulated burn damage to the Goshawk II’s right torso, Petra immediately jumped her OmniMech over the enemy Mech. The Goshawk II was a humanoid BattleMech which was built by the Snow Ravens but the Nova Cats had obviously gained this one through combat or trade. Landing behind the Goshawk II Petra twisted the BattleMech’s torso trying to bring the gauss rifle in line but the Goshawk II was already prepared blocking the twist with its arm the gauss slug flew harmlessly into the air heading into a nearby building. The Goshawk II’s pilot fired its pulse lasers at the Shadow Cat causing damage but still not penetrating the armour Petra screamed angrily turning her laser equipped arm onto the Goshawk II firing both lasers into the target. The Goshawk II staggered backwards slightly and Petra followed it up by stepping into the other Mech punching out with the same arm knocking the Goshawk backwards, the pilot was unprepared for the punch the Goshawk II stumbled away its arms flailing Petra took advantage launching another gauss slug into the medium BattleMech’s torso. She followed up with both lasers again further damaging the enemy Mech. Petra screamed viciously stepping forwards at the stumbling Goshawk II hitting the Shadow Cat with another gauss rifle shot at near point-blank range before activating the OmniMech’s jump jets jumping into the nearby enemy Mech kicking it knocking it to the ground as it fell the left leg twisted and snapped below the knee. While the weapons fire had been simulated to this point the physical attacks, she had engaged in had damaged the Goshawk and now it laid on the ground disabled.

“Two down” she said further rising her name’s honour just then a Nova Cat OmniMech, her final challenger stepped into the fray. Two particle cannon blasts rocked the Shadow Cat almost immediately as one manmade lightning blast hit the left leg and the other on the right arm. Immediately the seventy-ton OmniMech opened fire with three large lasers from the its other weapon arm these burned into the Shadow Cat’s arm which held the Mech’s gauss rifle. The weapon slowly pointed towards the ground its links to the cockpit disabled by the simulated damage. Ever the Smoke Jaguar Petra continued to fight defiantly firing her lasers into the enemy Nova Cat causing damage to the OmniMech. Unfortunately, it was nowhere near enough and the Nova Cat stepped forwards opening fire again with an “alpha strike” the simulated damage washed over the Shadow Cat disabling system after system as Petra was jolted around the cockpit before the whole cockpit went dark defeated.

---

Eight days later the Smoke Jaguar’s JumpShip, along with a Nova Cat Carrack-class Transport the Eon Trespass and a Drake-class Corvette the Foxhound jumped out of the Tortuga system heading into the periphery. The Eon Trespass carried two DropShips which served as transport for the Third Watch Cluster, the ship had also been chosen to support the mission carrying supplies and serving to transport anything that they encountered at the end on Huntress. The Drake-class was a capable Corvette which was carrying several assault DropShips which would escort the Corvette and the ground forces should it be needed. While the Nova Cat forces outnumbered those that the Smoke Jaguars had taken they had agreed that this was Khan Furey’s mission and planned on following her orders assuming that they did not put the Nova Cats in any undue danger.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Opening Ceremony, Liao Naval Arts Academy
Buenos Aires, Andurien Commonality
Capellan Confederation
7th October 3118

The Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation Dao-Shen Liao had travelled far from the Forbidden City on Sian to the system of Buenos Aires which was located deep within the nation.  “Today, we add to the capabilities of this great nation.” He said addressing the twenty or thirty people who were gathered in the meeting room in recent years while the other nations had fought wars the Confederation and its Chancellor had quietly built up the Confederation’s strength.  Today he stood in front of them, the symbol of the Confederation dressed in green and gold robes. “This space station will be a centre of teaching for the people of the Capellan Confederation and here we will improve the capabilities of our naval arm.”  He explained from the crowd there was polite applause. “I will also open this academy to recruits from our allies the Magistracy of Canopus, our friends in the Taurian Concordat and our trading partners in the Fronc Reaches and Aurigan Collective.”  He said surprising the crowd with the news “this is a state-of-the-art facility and we will collectively improve our capabilities against those that threaten us.” Dao-Shen explained “one thousand cadets will be trained here by the best pilots and ship commanders that the Capellan Confederation can muster. There will be aerospace fighters, DropShip and the WarShip CCSS Marcus Baxter on hand to assist in the training of the cadets, the defence of this station and of Buenos Aires.” He explained the Marcus Baxter was a Impavido-class Destroyer while it was not the strongest ship to defend the station and world it was more than Buenos Aires had before. The station and the additional resources added to this system’s defence were a significant investment by the Capellan Confederation.

Patrol
Sutama, District of Philadelphia
Draconis Combine
12th October 3118

While mercenaries were not a popular choice in the Draconis Combine they often leaned on the warriors of fortune in assisting in their defence, some that were hired by the Combine directly and some by individual worlds. The world of Sutama was one such which had augmented its defences with a combined arms mercenary battalion Butler’s Brigands. Today the Brigands exercised with the Sutama Militia and Major Christopher Butler’s Longbow Assault BattleMech marshalled the lines of his people in conjunction with the militia forces. The world of Sutama was a desolate one instead of being covered in vegetation the world was covered in red sand and rock, there were no running rivers on the world instead all the water was contained underground in massive lakes which also supported the only native lifeforms. Out of the red sand on the surface massive crystal formations grew from the ground instead of vegetation, the shards of rocks were sharp enough to injure infantrymen or shatter the lift skirts of a hovercraft. The atmosphere was barely breathable and with the sand regularly being blown around it was a good idea to always wear full face protection outside, the only thing that made Sutama a worthwhile prospect was the massive mineral deposits that came with the crystal formations and the adventure hunting expeditions which took place in the underground rivers and caves.

“Bravo-Bravo-One, this is Foxtrot Bravo-One!” Called in one of his company commanders off who was off to the left of the command.

“Go ahead Clive” Butler replied hearing the panic in the other man’s voice

“Sir, we’ve got a problem over here” Clive Harleston replied “a militia company just reported that they were fired on by someone carrying our colours. The local battalion commander is getting edgy.”

“All units accounted for?” Butler asked

“Affirmative, Major all my troops are in play and accounted for…” he reported in suddenly Christopher’s communication lines with the head of the militia were active.

“Tai-sa Staples” Butler responded to the militia commander

“Mercenary Major Butler, your forces have been attacking elements of the militia! I have casualties!” Tai-sa Staples screamed at Butler, unlike the mercenary commander who was in the field the Tai-sa was most likely onboard his command vehicle or back in the main deployment base.

“Sir, I have accounted for my troops in the area and I am currently accounting for others.” He said quickly sending a text message challenge to his company captains to check their troops.

“I am watching captured footage of your attacks Major and now there is a second report from the west!” Staples shouted angrily “Major your Brigands are to stand down immediately, your unit is under arrest, pending review.”

“Tai-sa, my forces are innocent in this…” he began when a Grand Dragon BattleMech opened fire on his Longbow, this one painted in militia colours. The eighty-five-ton support Mech rocked under the attack “Tai-sa, one of your Grand Dragon’s just fired on me!” He exclaimed in shock and anger turning his Mech towards the sixty-ton Grand Dragon as it lined up another shot, elsewhere in the line he saw other militia units turning on his Brigands. Swapping frequencies as the Grand Dragon fired again Christopher Butler made the fateful decision “Brigands, withdraw from the militia, defend yourselves of fired upon!” He ordered as his Longbow took more hits, he leaned into them and returned fire with a volley of long-range missile fire on the Grand Dragon. The forty missiles arced the short distance between the two Mechs and really could not miss, explosions landed all over and around the feet of the Grand Dragon as the sixty-ton Mech weathered the damage.

---

From behind a crystal covered ridge Harold Nakayama watched as the militia and Brigands lines fell to pieces from the cockpit of his Akuma BattleMech. “All Blood hold” he ordered swapping frequencies “Chikai Lance, break contact when you can, we are ready to support.” The night before four members of Nakayama’s Blood had infiltrated the militia lines replacing four members of the command who had been taken out by members of the Blood when they were on leave, due to the requirement to wear full face masks outside they had passed barely noticed as they made their way into the unit. Now in the middle of nowhere far from the base or any support they had sown chaos in the militia and mercenary lines.

“We’re doing our best” Chu-I Carlos Itou communicated instead of his normal Naginata he had commandeered a militia Shadow Hawk. Nakayama could see the fifty-five-ton Mech’s autocannon and short-range missiles engaging enemy targets. Svein Laaksonen’s Grand Dragon staggered out of the mercenary lines its armour pitted and both arms missing, unlike the others Svein was piloting a Mech like his own in the blood, now the militia-coloured machine was barely operational. “Gisei Lance, cover fire.”

From the crystalline ridge Gisei Lance was painted like Butler’s Brigands BattleMech and was comprised of a Hatamoto-Hi, Catapult, Penetrator and Ninja-To. Each stepped up and between them they began to lay down cover fire in the form of long-range lasers, missiles and particle cannons a pursuing militia Phoenix Hawk staggered and fell the Grand Dragon continued its retreat. Behind the Shadow Hawk staggered out of the line and followed the Grand Dragon, Chikai Lance continued do retreat.

“Chikai Four to Chikai One, I’m not making it out of this fight.” The last lance member said Harold Nakayama could not see the Griffin BattleMech.

“I can extract you” Carlos Itou replied spinning his Shadow Hawk around, he was prepared to re-enter the fight.

“Negative, left leg is gone, I will not be taken alive for the blood…” he communicated and then the line went dead.

“Four… Four! Four!” Itou shouted angrily but the other pilot was gone. Finally, the command sighted the last of the four undercover pilots Leesel Leander who was fighting her way clear of the lines in her Vagabond BattleMech running as its anti-missile systems shot down missiles which were converging on it.  The armless Vagabond was not engaging any of the targets around it instead just running at pace Gisei Lance opened fire providing cover fire as the Vagabond smashed small crystal formations dodging incoming weapons fire. The surviving members of Chikai Lance passed through the Nakayama’s Blood’s lines and continued to run.

“Blood withdraw” Nakayama ordered and Gisei Lance slowly stepped down from the line while the mercenaries and militia continued to beat each other into oblivion. The plan had been simple sow discord between the militia and the mercenary force they had hired, whatever the outcome of the battle the fighting had expanded now and Butler’s Brigands would not survive the battle, which was perfect for Harold Nakayama and his personal crusade against mercenary commands.

Scouting Mission
Temple of the Muses, Roche
Kerensky Cluster, Clan Homeworlds
19th October 3118

After everything Clan Goliath Scorpion had been through with the infighting between the Clans and the Society the one value, they had held above all else was their reverence for everything that came from the Star League era.  While the Scorpions no longer had an entire galaxy of Seekers searching for relics from bygone areas, they still had the Crimson Seeker Trinary which while fighting the Society would try to salvage anything they could from the past.

Having being dropped onto the world of Roache the Crimson Seeker Trinary had headed towards the Temple of the Muses, a facility once held exclusively by the Scorpions, a place which played homage to the relics found by Goliath Scorpions. Below the facility was an enormous bunker which contained other relics the Scorpions had collected while the Crimson Seeker had no plans on clearing out the bunker today they were planning on checking its integrity.

Moving in Star Colonel Fiona Henriquez moved her Summoner OmniMech closer to the Temple her seventy ton OmniMech’s sensors began to scan the ruins of the Temple a tear ran down Henriquez face seeing the facility “the stavags demolished it.” She stated angrily looking at the facility. “They most likely removed the display items.”

“Aff Star Colonel, but the Bunker’s signal is still working indicating the bunker is intact.” Star Captain Robert Scott commented his Phantom’s sensors the best of the leading Mechs.

“Aff, these relics are not worth the Society’s time.” Someone commented “they are more interested in destroying these worlds.”

“Aff, we should take the fight to them, raise the Society from these sands.” Star Captain Scott responded “Star Colonel, the bunker’s entrance is buried under what looks like ferrocrete “the stavags could not get in so they sealed it.”

“Just as well they didn’t get in or they would have realized they had bit off more than they can chew” one of the warriors said in her Summoner’s cockpit Henriquez shuddered at the use of a contraction but she knew what the warrior meant while the Clans hated fixed defences and traps seeing them as dishonourable the Goliath Scorpions had no qualms of using them to defend their facility. The other Clans had no interest in the bunker so the traps did not violate their honour, instead the traps were intended on stopping the Clan Dark Caste, anyone from the Inner Sphere or more recently the Society.

“We will check the secondary entrance before withdrawing, our mission is the relics safety.” Fiona Henriquez commanded “Alfonzo are you ready, quiaff?” she said glancing over at the other OmniMech which stood ready.

“Aff” he responded his Ebon Jaguar was equipped with underwater maneuvering units which would allow his Mech to check the secret secondary entrance.

“Go, we will continue to make it look like we are searching here.” She said, there could still be observers somewhere watching her unit's movements.

“Aff, Star Colonel” the MechWarrior replied turning his Ebon Jaguar towards the east he walked through the undergrowth and into the nearby water there the sixty-five-ton Mech turned into an effective submarine as the UMUs gave the pilot far more control than any regular Mech would have. Alfonso put his Mech into a spiralling dive heading down nearly two hundred metres until landing on the bottom, there was a very specific way to approach the bunker’s secondary entrance.  Stepping forwards he looked over he saw a large submarine hovering near the bunker’s entrance, alongside were two smaller vessels while below there was a group of engineers in diving gear near the entrance of the facility. “Star Colonel, there are Society Submarines at the entrance along with the engineers.” Alfonso reported.

“We can deploy more units” Henriquez offered other members of the unit carried weaponry that could be used underwater but none of them had the UMUs.

“Negative Star Colonel, other units would not be maneuverable enough, this sub looks like is designed to support the engineers, minimal armaments. The bigger threat is two Star League-era Manta Submarines I hate to sink them but…”

“Do what you need to, Alfonso.” Henriquez ordered it hurt damage the craft that should be museum pieces but it needed to be done.

“Aff, Star Colonel, if I cannot stop them, I will stop them gaining access.” He said walking the Ebon Jaguar off the ledge he let the sixty-five-ton Mech to sink deeper as he entered range, he opened fire with both long-range torpedo launchers. Thirty torpedoes swam in on the engineers working near the entrance bombarding their positions with explosives. The larger submarine opened fire with its own torpedoes targeted on the Ebon Jaguar while the two Mantas accelerated towards it firing their lasers. One laser missed completely while the other struck the Ebon Jaguar’s leg, moments later the torpedoes struck the Ebon Jaguar’s torso.  With the two submarines incoming Alfonso targeted each with a large pulse laser and salvo of long-range torpedoes at each.

The two submarines opened fire on the Ebon Jaguar again with their lasers striking a leg and the torso area again more torpedoes from the larger submarine came in but they missed wide. Alfonso looked at his Mech’s armour coverage and saw the lasers were beginning to weaken it, a breach would lead to an area of the Mech being flooded. The two Manta’s opened fire with their short-range torpedoes only a few hit the Mech’s arms before the two Manta’s sped past the OmniMech. Alfonso triggered his UMUs spinning the Ebon Jaguar on the spot he opened fire with his torpedoes and pulse lasers again this time concentrating on the backs of one of the submarines. The thirty torpedoes and two pulse lasers were enough to penetrate the armour causing several breaches which caused one of the Manta’s to explode.

With his Mech’s back turned to the larger submarine Alfonso was braced for the torpedoes to the back. The concussive blasts of the torpedoes exploding forced the Ebon Jaguar forwards the UMUs struggling to keep the BattleMech stable in the water. The remaining Manta turned quickly and opened fire with its laser again but missed giving Alfonso the opening another volley of torpedoes and pulse laser blasts knocked out the remaining Manta as torpedoes and pulse lasers penetrated the armour and blew up the ammunition reserves. His concentration on the Mantas however allowed the larger submarine to target his back again, this time torpedoes hit the rear of the OmniMech causing damage to the rear of the torso penetrating the armour.

“Star Colonel, both Mantas are down but my Mech has sprung a leak and I cannot disable the larger sub. I am going to eliminate their ability to access the secondary entrance.” He said in a matter-of-fact way he turned his Mech targeting the larger submarine with the pulse lasers and torpedoes he’d used before but the larger submarine had the armour to take it and it had anti-missile point defence lasers to protect it. “Fine, I don’t need to sink you anyway” Alfonso said angrily moving his focus to target the ledges above the secondary entrance he opened fire with his Mech’s weapons damaging the rocks above the entrance. Systems of the Ebon Jaguar were beginning to fail as the OmniMech passed under the submarine Alfonso removed the safeties from the fusion engine even as it filled with water.  “You will not get through this” Alfonso said slamming the Ebon Jaguar into the walls above the entrance even as more torpedoes arced in on the OmniMech, it was too late to stop Alfonso though as the fusion engine exploded destabilising the rocks above the secondary entrance.

On the surface above the explosion and shock was felt as water flew into the air above the battle site. Suddenly and slowly the ground disappeared as the explosion caused by the 325 rated fusion engine in the heart of the Ebon Jaguar caused a massive cave in burying the only other entrance to the vault. “Until Roche is liberated no-one will access the vault, move out and remember Alfonso’s sacrifice.”  Fiona Henriquez cursed, due to the lack of resources she had only been able to equip Alfonso’s OmniMech with UMUs if they had been able to outfit more Mechs or Battle Armour then the MechWarrior might not be dead and the submarine may have been stopped, she would speak with the Khan and Quartermasters when they returned to Arizona, this couldn’t happen again.
