Oooo new and shiny can't wait.  :)

Yes, the Future begins here not in 3250 :P

I'll end the week with a new year, a couple of new ships, and a revelation

3085

Starliner One (Sovetskii Soyuz-class WarShip)
Titan Shipyards, Sol System
Star League Protectorate
8th January 3085

Considering the work that had been required, the repairs, refit and additional features it was amazing that the work had been completed on schedule and on budget however Virgin Interstellar Transport's big project was ready for trials.  Formerly known as the Blake's Vengeance, a Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, the newly relaunched vessel had become the first civilianised WarShip in known space almost completely disarmed it now carried every luxury a passenger could want on a space craft.  Designed for long range voyages its first mission was to sail around the Sol system, with successful trials would passengers be allowed on board for the ships maiden voyage.  Renamed the Starliner One the ship would begin three months of trials and testing within the Sol System and the Star League Protectorate with every safety system tested to breaking point before it took on its first passengers for a trip around the Inner Sphere.

Nero Wolfe, Dante's Detectives
Selasys Inc Corporation, Loyalty shipyards
Marik-Stewart Commonwealth
12th January 3085

Completing a year’s corporate security for Selasys Inc Dante's Detectives prepare to leave Loyalty but first collect their modified Tramp-class JumpShip, the Nero Wolfe.  Almost rebuilt from the hull up the ship has been fitted with a Compact KF Jump Drive, a Lithum Fusion Battery and a manoeuvring drive capable of 1G acceleration all features normally seen on a WarShip.  Combined with the Nero Wolfe's already impressive electronics capabilities these modifications effectively turn the Nero Wolfe into a modern built equivalent to a Bug-Eye Surveillance craft first seen during the Star League period and since lost to history.  As the ship does not have any capital weapons, minimal armour and manoeuvring the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth is happy for the vessel to retain its JumpShip status.

As the Dante's Detectives leave Loyalty Selasys Inc. begin to look at producing more such craft with both the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth and Duchy of Tamarind-Abby making their interest known in the design which Selasys Inc. now intends to market as the Tramp II-class JumpShip.  The new craft would have the manoeuvring drives and Compact jump core with an option to have the Lithium Fusion Battery and electronics added as extras.

Diplomatic Hall, Davion Royal Palace
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
26th January 3085

Although the Federated Suns maintained a peaceful relationship with the Draconis Combine the shared history of the two nations meant it was rare for a member of the Kurita Family to visit New Avalon even on a diplomatic mission.  In order to maintain the illusion that both Davion and Kurita were equals to appease both cultures First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion had proposed he meet the Kurita representative in the Diplomatic Hall far from any Davion war trophies or the throne.  Instead it was a simple room with a pair of tables, private and easy.  Victor stood with his long term friend and pro-tem Commander of the Crucis March Field Marshal Galen Cox, both wearing full AFFS Dress uniform which were covered in medals, "he said he wants to speak to me?  Why not our diplomats like ever other ambassador?  Simple message passed to us."  Victor whispered he had great respect for the Kurita family but this kind of visit on heightened his past links to the Draconis Combine’s leading family and alienated him from the Draconis March.  Which could have been the entire point of the meeting, still because of the rarety of the case Victor had agreed to the meeting.

"Unknown" Galen said quietly "although it's a member of the family we've never seen before Kitsune Kurita, a cousin or a son of Hohiro I think."

"I've read the Intel brief, a minor member of the family barely willing to be involved in politics and happy for Vincent to lead.  I believe he even proposed Minoru remain as Coordinator?"  Galen nodded

   "Still a Kurita"

"Still a Kurita" Victor repeated as the doors opened in entered a single male of Japanese decent he was quite short, like Victor only a little over 5"6 but what was striking was his hair was far lighter than the traditional Kurita features and had more Caucasian features than Asian, in his late twenties.  More mystery Victor thought he looked nothing like Hohiro Kurita, so much for that intel report.  "Welcome to New Avalon, Duke Kurita-san" Victor said respectfully bowing in the traditional Kuriata welcome, he’d learned much of the Combine’s way in his early life.  Behind him Galen hastely copied the First Prince’s move.

"I thank you for your warm invitation, Prince Victor-san" Duke Kurita said bowing deeper than the First Prince.
"I was told you asked to speak with me that you had a message."

"Hai" the man said "my message was for you and you alone First Prince Davion-san" he said quietly looking at Galen standing nearby.

"Galen, please wait outside." Victor said to his Field Marshal and friend.

"Of course sire, I'll be glad to."  He said bowing slightly before stepping backwards before turning and leaving by a door behind Victor.

"Now that we are alone do you bring a message from the Kurita family to me personally?"

"Hai" the man said "I have a message that has waited almost thirty years to be passed to you."  Victor remembered thirty years ago very well, the height of the Clan War, Kitsune continued quietly "I grew up by the name of Kitsune Fox to protect my identity... assassination is a real danger for some of us."

"I can understand that, we have all faced such trials, sometimes I think it would be better to have been born to a simpler life." Victor said quietly, the Black Dragon Society was well known against the Kurita family and a danger to all their members not just the Coordinator.

"Hai” Kitsune agreed “but strangely at the same time perhaps not."  He said mystically.

"I am sorry Duke Kurita but what has your name got to do with me..."

"Its important because of its significance."  Kitsune said "Fox" he repeated the surname quietly "your father was known as The Fox for his cunning and tactics in war.  His name was Hanse Davion but the nickname was known just as well if not better."

"Yes it was..."  Victor said quietly beginning to realize "your father was not Hohiro Kurita."

   "No"

"And your Kurita name comes from your mother not your father."

   "Hai" Kitsune confirmed

"Omiko" Victor stated naming his first love Omiko Kurita, killed by an assassin during the Clan War when he was away fighting Clan Smoke Jaguar.  They had agreed shortly before hand to end their relationship, should he return they could never have been together not while he remained First Prince of the Federated Suns.  Despite the end of the relationship Victor still held her close to his heart.  Even Danai, the love of his life knew that Omiko would be with Victor until he died.

"Hai, my mother, and my message that has waited long enough.  She needed you to know that she loved you and that there was and could never be another."  Kitsune said bowing his head even deeper than before.

"My son" Victor said slightly shocked stepping forward taking him by the shoulders smiling broadly "but why keep this hidden?  Why reveal this now?"

"My mother's choice, when I was born she knew I would be a distraction to you and a weapon against both you and against Hohiro.  Now that Hohiro's time has passed and that Vincent has succeeded his father, with my uncle's assistance, our line is secured.  My heritage will be revealed in due course, however I gained permission from Vincent and my Uncle to tell you privately before such a thing happened."  Kitsune said stepping backwards "I want nothing from you, sire, I am proud to call you father however I want no place in this life."  He said raising his arms "I am my mother's son, as well as yours.  I will not see pain used against you or anyone because of a name and a life that never was."

"My son, you will be no weapon.”  Victor promised “the line of succession in the Federated Suns is clear Burton and my other children with Danai have their place, but I will not deny your place either, if your name becomes clear I will not deny it.  I am proud of my feelings for your mother just as I am for you, we may not have been together in life but we are forever linked in blood and in our love for your mother.  There is always a place and room for you here." Victor said opening his arms.

"I am glad, father" Kitsune said meeting Victor's hug, since the loss of his mother Kitsune had been well cared for never looked down on because of his heritage but he'd never really felt a paternal love.  Now having Victor in his life he had a father that was proud to have him in their life which meant more than any throne or position could ever.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Department of Military Intelligence
Fox’s Den, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
3rd February 3085

Entering the DMI office of the Fox’s Den Colonel Damien Reburn stood to attention as Field Marshal Carver Felsner rose from his chair.  “Colonel, welcome to the Fox’s Den.”

   â€œThank you sir”

   â€œHow was your training?”

â€œ Grueling.”  Damien said quietly “the trainers treated me like a raw recruit.” He said with a small smile “which I requested.  It went as I expected.”

â€œAnd by looking at your records you are now fully qualified in the use of all Federated Suns built Battle Armour.”

â€œIndeed along with Kage Battle Armour from the Combine, Fa Shih Capellan armour and the Elemental Battle Armour of the Clans.”

â€œVery nice and now you are ready to return to the Fourth New Avalon Guards?”

   â€œThat was the plan sir.”

â€œWhat if I could give you a new unit?  Specifically built to utilize both Mechs and Battle Armour wherever the situation is required.  Your command would answer to me alone; separate from both the Rabid Foxes and the other DMI commands.”

â€œIt interests me sir but I thought that was the intention of the Fourth New Avalon Guards?”

â€œThis will be more specialized” Carver said quietly “I’ll have the paperwork drawn up.  You will have an office set up within the Fox’s Den and can select your own officer and units.”

â€œThank you sir.”  Damien paused “what missions will we be assigned?”

   â€œWhatever is deemed appropriate.”

   â€œYes sir”

Clan Goliath Scorpion Encampment
Kentares, Draconis March
Federated Suns
8th February 3085

It felt wrong to Major-General Bannister Cameron not to be walking into the Clan Goliath Scorpion encampment on Kentares without his Division with him.  But according to his sources and to the SLIC Agents that had been attached to his command these Clansmen especially were no threat to Bannister.  As he entered the encampment he was greeted by Star Colonel Rufus Myers who invites them to remain with the Goliath Scorpions as long as he wishes.  Bannister agrees to remain with Chi Galaxy and exchange histories and information.

Lyran Raid
Morningside, Clan Wolf OZ
Inner Sphere
12th February 3085

Recently reinforced by the First Tamar Training Battalion the Tamar Cavaliers launches a raid against Clan Wolf’s captured holdings on Morningside.  Fighting against a single cluster of Wolves the Tamar troops distinguish themselves in combat showing their worth in combat before retreating to their DropShips damage done and honour won.

In orbit however they are attacked by a pair of Isegrim Assault DropShips, sub-capital missiles tear into the Tamar forces destroying a pair of DropShips.  The newest Clan Wolf (in-Exile) creation in the hands of the Crusader Clan Wolf.  With no chance of matching the Clan vessel’s firepower the Tamar forces retreat as quickly as possible.  With information for the LCIC and questions to be asked of Clan Wolf (in-Exile).

Drake, Whirlwind-class Destroyer
Outworlds Alliance, Periphery
14th February 3085

The Clan Snow Raven vessel Drake jumped into a new system beyond the Outworlds Alliance claimed space into the Deep Periphery.  Under orders from scout out new systems for Snow Raven colonization they were surprised to immediately be confronted by another vessel.

â€œFull scan of that vessel” the commander ordered

â€œDesign not recognized.”  The sensor officer reported “Aerospace fighters!” he warned as smaller craft began to launch.

â€œWeapons forward Capital Missiles; I’d like to disable it.”

   â€œAye, sir”

â€œDropShips launching from inside the ship?”  Another sensor operator said quietly sounding confused.

â€œA system that everyone forgot?”  The commander said quietly “communications give me a full system scan.”

â€œAye sir” the officer said as missile launched against the JumpShip disabling it quickly “Commodore, we detect at least a dozen DropShips throughout the system going between three habitats and one moon and the main planet.  All designs are unknowns possibly of local manufacture.”

â€œTry records from the Reunification War.”  He said quietly

â€œSir?”  The officer said questioningly before nodding after a few moments “one vessel identified as a Drost Iia Infantry Transport.  Last reported use by Rim Worlds forces during the Liberation of Terra before the SLDF left the Inner Sphere.  Second contact appears to be a Jumbo-class DropShip. Another pre-Reunification war design.”  The officer said moments before the sensor console bleeped a warning.

â€œWhat in the name of Kerensky?”  The officer blurted out, silence followed you could almost hear a pin drop on the bridge of the Snow Raven vessel.  The officer slowly realized everyone was looking at him and regained some composure.  “Sir, sensors detect the SLS Hood, Dreadnaught-class, in system her IFF is active although the ship appears to be derelict.”

â€œHave your sensors checked, the Dreadnaughts were all destroyed or broken down.  The Hood like her sisters perished following the end of the Reunification War.”

â€œStar Commodore, systems checked out 100%, out there is a relic of the original Star League.  The first true combat WarShip.”  The ship’s first officer said, the Drake’s commander was almost too speechless to reply.

â€œBring us in system, prepare a prize crews for all ships in system we are taking possession of everything here.  I want the Hood secured as a prize for Clan Snow Raven.”  He finally ordered as the crew went about their duties they continued to be surprised by what was found in the system primitive BattleMechs and vehicles extinct for generations before the original SLDF left the Inner Sphere.  It was like this system identified as Wynn’s Roost on maps had fallen completely off the grid and been locked in time.  With the cream of the cake being the SLS Hood a true piece of Star League heritage maybe more so than the great McKenna’s Pride in orbit of Stana Mechty.

In the coming weeks the neighbouring systems of Vangburg, Nerum and Renorsal all were identified as surviving systems of the Reunification War fallen off the grid for centuries all had priceless pieces of history on them.  The Snow Ravens intent on hiding their new found prize only allowed Snow Raven born personnel in the systems and posted WarShips at all Jump points in each of the systems and in orbit over the worlds.

Star League Shipyards
Terra, Star League Protectorate
20th February 3085

In secret in the Terran system the Star League Defence Force brings online two modified Congress-class Frigates, designated the Republic-class Frigate the two craft formerly ComGuard vessels Hollings York and Cleansing Fire are re-launched as the Republic and Freedom.  The reason for the secrecy of this launch is because onboard the two craft is an recovered version of the M-5 Control Computer.  Seen originally on Casper drones of the original SLDF’s SDS Defences although nowhere near an operational Casper system it affects improves all targeting and tracking systems, additionally the SLDF engineers experimented with Advanced Robotic Transport (ARTS) Bays for all fighters and small craft intended on cutting down on the required bay craft.

The two ships begin extensive trials in the Terran system around Jupiter keeping them beyond all pressing eyes.  After three days of testing it becomes clear that the M-5 components are more trouble than worth without a full M-5 system they are useless and the systems are removed although the ARTS systems prove to be well worth their cost and weight.  SLDF Quartermasters begin to explore the idea of using ARTS systems on all WarShips and select DropShips.

Scouting Mission
12 Light Year from Taurian Concordat
Periphery
2nd March 3085

The cockpit of Sonja Nova Cat's cockpit was warmer than it was outside the mighty seventy ton OmniMech which was a relief to the Nova Cat Star Commander.  BattleMech and OmniMech cockpits were always warmer than the outside but this particular world was a special case, one moment it was boiling hot, the next it was cold and unwelcoming.  For the last week Sonja's lone Star had conducted recon operations of the world's northern hemisphere and so far the weather was the only thing that made the world stand out, nothing that screamed at making it a world worth colonizing, nothing that ruled it out.

As for Sonja she hated this work, it was luck of the draw her Cluster's Star Colonel had said, coincidence another had said, Sonja wasn't convinced and everyone knew it.  A week after her assignment to the unit the 21st Nova Cat Regulars Cluster, a veteran combat unit within the Nova Cat Touman, had received orders to join the New Worlds Program and been assigned to scout new planets for colonization or for potential mining opportunities.  Sonja couldn't be absolutely sure but she had bet on some sort of political move by her father to keep her out of trouble on her first true tour of duty. She was the freeborn daughter of the Nova Cat's Khan, anywhere else she would have been target to Trials of Grievance from other Clans and maybe even her own people.

Unfortunately this "protection" had not made her any friends within the 21st Regulars, all of whom blamed her for their assignment, it could have been just their turn to do this but most had vented their frustration against her.  Sonja had fought two Circles of Equals since the announcement of the mission, the first she'd broken her opponent's nose the second she'd shattered her opponent's left leg.  It was them her Star Colonel had chosen her Star to do solo recon of this backwater, a two week recon, he'd called it her first true independent command something to take pride in, so far she couldn't see it.  Finishing her patrol Sonja began to head back towards her unit when her headset began to crackle.  "Blade One, Eagle Nest, say again static" she said again static "returning to LZ" she reported accelerating slowly to 80kph closing on her ship's landing zone.  The sun was beginning to lower soon it would be dark, fighting in the dark against an unknown enemy would just add to the challenge.

The scene at the landing zone could only be described as chaos, the four Nova Cat Mechs propped up against their Broadsword-class DropShip fighting against nearly a company of enemy Mechs, armour and battle armour.  Turning her heavy Mech's torso Sonja opened fire with her arm mounted LB-class autocannon followed by her lasers on the other arm hitting two of the enemy Mechs.  She followed with a salvo of long range missiles into a third Mech.  Looking at the multiple enemy Mechs Sonja saw the bull insignia of the Taurian Concordat displayed prominently.  Walking her Dragon Cat forward Sonja continued to fire her lasers, autocannon and missiles striking multiple targets at once, she was breaking every rule of Clan warfare but it didn't matter this was all about survival.

From the centre of the Taurian line a pair of Awesome assault Mechs stepped forward each raising their triple particle cannons at the Nova Cats, Sonja cut her weapons low into one of the Awesomes knocking the Mech back.  Suddenly both Awesomes fired together Sonja braced for the impacts which never came, the beams went high over the Dragon Cat slamming into the Broadsword, Sonja realized what they were doing and targeted both enemy Mechs triggering an Alpha Strike she fired everything the Mech had into both Mechs equally.  The Awesomes ignored her fire and fired at the DropShip again, Sonja looked at the monitors the DropShip was taking heavy damage.  Firing again and again one of the Awesomes buckled at the knee and fell flat on its face but it was too little too late, another salvo struck the Broadsword breaking through the armour of the DropShip there was a surge of energy and the DropShip exploded, the four Nova Cat Mechs standing against the DropShip were almost completely vapourized, as the shockwave hit Sonja's OmniMech the force of the explosion picked up the Mech like it was a rag-doll.

Flicking all the switches on one side of her Dragon Cat's cockpit she primed the ejector seat in one fluid motion suddenly the entire head section of the Dragon Cat shot into the air flying through the expanding explosion of the Broadsword.  The Dragon Cat was an ultra modern OmniMech with the entire head section protecting her body Sonja was safe from the flames however she was not protected from the kinetic force of being thrown around the ballistic cockpit, within moments of the head section leaving the Mech's body Sonja was unconscious knocked, even if she had remained awake there was nothing she could do her Mech was destroyed, her Star gone, her transport obliterated, she was very much alone.

Scouting Mission
12 Light Year from Taurian Concordat
Periphery
3rd March 3085

The morning cold woke Sonja still strapped in her command chair, her head throbbed constantly, and she could see light entering the cockpit from areas that had been smashed by the landing.  The sun had just been lowering when the DropShip had been attacked meaning she'd been knocked out for at least eight hours, which so far was the length of this world's night.  Pulling herself upright she sat in the chair for a moment, all emergency power and residual heat in the cockpit were gone, likely drained off during the night.  It had probably kept her alive when unconscious but limited her options now; she pulled off the neurohelmet and tossed it to the side then unbuckled the harness holding her in the command chair.

Slipping past the command chair she opened the equipment locker built into the back of the chair.  Like all Nova Cat Mechs the seat had been modified from the Star League standard operated by most of the Clans behind the chair was a locker with all the survival equipment needed to keep a warrior alive for seven days in the wild.  Many of the new Nova Cat Mechs had full head ejection systems of the older Mechs which only ejected the pilot's chair their chassis and cockpits had been modified accordingly.  For once Sonja was most grateful to have a Dragon Cat under her, she'd been assigned the Mech because of her father, Canin Rosse, he'd made the design as famous as the Nova Cat OmniMech and it was a very capable design however she'd have preferred something lighter like a Shadow Cat or Huntsman, something with a lower profile and more varied capabilities.  The Dragon Cat for all its additional targeting systems and advanced weapons was more a command Mech than anything else which although Sonja did not complain about, was not all she strives to have.

In the locker Sonja found a set of full body camouflage fatigues, combat boots and a utility belt to protect her from the elements, far better than her coolant suit which offered little protection outside the cockpit pulling the fatigues over the coolant suit they'd be a nice extra layer.  Additionally there was MRE (Meals-Ready-to-Eat) for a week, a small but powerful torch, a survival knife with a serrated edge which she could use to saw wood for a fire if needed and the prize a Gauss Submachine Gun.  One of the reasons for the changes to the cockpit and command chair was the Gauss Submachine Gun, Clan Nova Cat had gained manufacturing rights from Clan Sea Fox and her father had directed that it should be the primary Personal Defence Weapon of Nova Cat warriors.  Although designated as a Submachine Gun it was more the size of an assault rifle a boxy weapon with full ambidextrous hand grips, the 30 shot magazines slipped into the top of the weapon's frame while power packs slipped into the stock.  A very capable weapon and a far better one than the single laser pistol or combat knife many warriors were left with.  She strapped the weapon to the front of her jumpsuit and let it hang there, the straps would hold the weapon in an accessible place but leave her hands free to do other things, she then pulled the utility belt around her and slipped the two extra magazines and power packs into the pockets.  Glancing around the cockpit she couldn't see anything else left that was of use and flicked a single control on the back of the command chair before running out the hatch, the cold morning had toughened the ground giving her a solid base for her movements.  Running quickly her muscles ached as she moved but there was little else for it, she reached about twenty metres from the cockpit module before the self-destruct charge exploded consuming the last piece of her OmniMech, leaving it intact wasn't an option it would attract anyone looking for her and with the breach in the cockpit window it would prove little shelter, from now on she'd have to fend for herself, time to put her training to its test.

She knew that the other Nova Cats would be returning for her in a few days, the Scouting mission was to last between ten and fourteen days, they'd already been on the planet eight days.  When the JumpShip arrived in the system and their DropShip was not waiting a ground team would be sent to search for them, the Taurain force wouldn't be able to hold a full Nova Cat landing force and she'd be rescued, if they could find her.  She knew the best chances of being found were to be in the vicinity of the DropShip landing zone, undoubtedly the Nova Cats would search the wreckage and with luck she'd find supplies there that would sustain her longer if her rescue team took their time.

It took Sonja more than an hour to cover the distance between her crashed cockpit module and the destroyed DropShip.  The sun was high in the sky when she arrived at the wreckage the fire still burning from the hull of the smashed Broadsword which was still ablaze from several positions, Sonja could see parts of the ship’s hull had been blown clear of the vessel the two Awesomes she'd been sparring with had been smashed by one of the DropShip's exit doors.  The area was surprisingly quiet Sonja couldn't see any Taurian forces around it was worth the chance of closing on the wreckage if only for the chance of claiming for equipment she could use to survive.

The heat coming from the flames were enough to keep Sonja at a distance from the wreckage glancing around Sonja saw some movement to her left hand side looking over she saw a large hulking figure moving around the area.  Ducking behind some broken metal she saw the suit was burned and damaged the end of its left arm completely missing, knowing she couldn't outrun a Battle Armoured trooper she had no chance but to chance her luck she opened fire with her Gauss Sub-machine gun, the weapon was nearly silent as it fired a three round burst.  Her enemy was so large it was impossible to miss firing constantly she cut into the suit's armour several rounds smashed into the suit's head and others into a large gash on its leg.  The suited trooper stood there and took the fire seemingly unbothered by Sonja's weapons fire she kept firing concentrating on the head and torso area, but even the powerful gauss rounds were barely making a dent in the armour.  In response her enemy raised its right arm and fired off the large weapon mounted there the artificial lightning bolt flew between the suit and Sonja's position, she dived out of the way of the weapon's fire just as the bolt hit the wreckage a steam of electricity bounced off the metal slamming into Sonja's back she could feel the heat of the blast burn through her fatigues and the moments later the pain steaming through her back.  Sonja screamed loudly it was an intense shooting pain that flew up her back and down her limbs, she tried to ignore the pain as she rolled over the suit was still closing on her, in the prone position she fired her Gauss Sub-machine gun at the suit time and again, the pain from the electricity blast continued to pulse through her veins but she knew that would be the last thing she'd have to worry about if the suit reached her.

Pulling the trigger again three final bullets fired slamming into the armoured behemoth that now towered over her, she pulled the trigger again but nothing happened.  She reached for another ammo cartridge but the pain of the electricity blast continued to pulse through her and she couldn't get to it before passing out.  The Taurian armoured trooper still standing over her.

Wreckage
12 Light Year from Taurian Concordat
Periphery
3rd March 3085

To awake was to awake to the pain Sonja opened her eyes and could barely see her head pounded her eyes felt like they were on fire and her body felt sore just about everywhere.  Over her a sheet of metal had been extended protecting her from the rain she tried to move but it hurt and her arms wouldn't respond, it took her a moment of panic to realize they were bound behind her.  Turning her neck to the left and then the right she could see the ruined Battle Armour suit standing near a crackling fire.  Beside the fire there was a hunched figure dressed in little more than a t-shirt and shorts she could see his left arm was cut badly near the shoulder and his body was burned in a few places she wasn't sure but it looked like her weapon had penetrated the armour causing the wound to his arm.  He'd obviously tried to bandage some of his wounds but not gotten far now he laid staring into the flame, she studied him for a moment he was older than Sonja, which wasn't difficult she and her brother had been classed as special cases by their trainers, there freeborn heritage well known within the Nova Cats.  Instead of an initial Trial of Position at their eighteenth birthday both Sonja and Grayson had taken their first Trials on their seventeenth birthdays.   This hadn't caused any issues for Grayson who had excelled and become a Star Captain but Sonja had struggled and was only a Star Commander, she was still one of the youngest at that rank in the entire Touman.  Now looking at this man she realized he was nearer his late twenties perhaps even his thirties and had seen far more combat than she in her first mission.  He continued to stare into the fire Sonja followed his gaze her eyes beginning to clear as she looked at the flame, and there it was... an image.

Looking at the fire Sonja stared intently she'd heard her father speak of visions he'd had and other Nova Cats had claimed to have over the years, she and her brother Grayson had both tried and failed to ever see anything in the flames even after following the methods used by Nova Cat warriors in the past.  Sonja had written it off perhaps it wasn't her path, she was freeborn daughter to a Trueborn warrior and a freeborn noble, she'd thought perhaps she was too far removed from the path.  But now looking into the flame she saw something it looked like an animal four legs, a large sturdy body with horns from its head - a bull! - she realized symbol of the Taurian Concordat of the enemy solider sitting crouched over the fire.  Continuing to stare into the fire Sonja realized there was something else there... before she could make it out the image was gone and with her strength sapped away she lapsed into unconsciousness.

Hours must have passed before Sonja awoke again this time, the sun was gone as was her pain, her eyes clearer, she could hear the rain still fell above her but she noticed the fire was out.  The towering battle armour suit stood tall but the solider was gone.  Using her legs she somehow found the strength and pulled herself up into a sitting position, looking around she could see various parts of the destroyed DropShip and other wreckage, under one massive girder was the remains of a Huntsman OmniMech the girder which had most likely been part of the DropShip's Mechbay had impaled the Mech smashing through the back of the cockpit down through the torso into the ground.  Sonja wondered how the Mech's fusion engine had not exploded from the damage, if it had this entire area would likely have been in a lot more worse condition.

Looking around the small "campsite" the Taurian warrior had created she could see her survival pack and utility belt near the fire along with her medical kit and food, she suddenly realized she was hungry, how long had it been since she ate or drank?  She honestly couldn't remember, moving her shoulders was agony her back burned by the particle blast from the Taurian armour testing the bounds still holding her arms she realized she wasn't breaking them.  Knowing she couldn't escape at least at the moment she chose to bide her time, something would happen and she'd have a chance to escape and hopefully wait it out until the Nova Cats arrived to recover her.

As it turned out she didn't wait long for something to happen against the metal covering her there was a series of explosive "bangs" followed by a figure leaping over another piece of the shelter, she could tell it was her Taurian captor still dressed in just a T-shirt and shorts but now in full motion raising her Gauss Sub-machine gun to head height he snapped off several rounds in one direction then in another.   He looked down at Sonja and suddenly she felt very vulnerable "about time!"  He shouted more loudly than he needed to Sonja guessed he may have ear damage, looking back up he raised the sub-machine gun and fired several more rounds before ducking down again grabbing her gruffly by the shoulder he turned her over quickly, the pain was incredible but short lived as with one movement the Taurian slit her bounds releasing her arms "listen up, don't attack me!"  He shouted into her ear, standing up he fired off another burst of fire ducking back down again.  "We got pirates closing on us, they want me more than you but I reckon you'd be a nice prize too after all the mess you're Clan has made of this area!"  He continued to shout "you want to stay free, we work together!"

Coming to her senses quickly Sonja rolled onto her chest, ignoring the pain she pushed herself up into a crouch "a weapon?" she croaked her mouth dry, "water" she whispered.  The Taurian stood up again fired off another burst of gauss projectiles, Sonja could hear the return fire was widely inaccurate covering the wrecked Nova Cat DropShip.  Moving across the camp she swiped up a water canteen tossing the lid to the side she downed most of it in one continuous drink "easy with that, we don't have much!"  The Taurian shouted looking at her.

"You do not have to shout" Sonja said in return eyeing a second Gauss Sub-machine gun behind a box "been scavenging?"  She said swiping up the weapon

"You Clanners come well equipped to a fight."  He said, on the plus side he wasn't shouting anymore.

"Who are they?"

"Pirates, bounty hunters, ex-employees with a grudge pick one" he said "likely someone that doesn't like having a Calderon back on the throne."  He said stepping up firing another burst at their enemy, the weapons fire was getting closer.

"We need to get out of here.  Can the suit move?"

"No the DropShip explosion and your fire disabled too many systems"

"Good" she said quietly smiling at least her defence hadn't been in complete vein, raising from her position she looked for enemies but there were none to be seen "time to move follow me."  She said breaking cover she moved towards another piece of wreckage more weapons fire followed her but all went wide.  Stopping she turned and sighted two of her enemies snapping off two burst she could see one hit its mark, moments later her Taurian partner joined her.

"Where are we going?"

"Fallback position 1" She said without another word she ran towards another piece of wreckage near the nose of the Broadsword, looking up she could see the cockpit of the DropShip was a burnt out hole.  Turning again she searched for her enemies but could see none the Taurian joined her quickly.  "Keep moving for the tree line, I will cover" she said keeping her Gauss Sub-machine gun raised, her captor turned ally nodded and continued to run more bullets ran out one slamming into his leg, the Taurian's legs gave way and he it the ground quickly.  "Damnit!"  Sonja shouted firing of three bursts into the woods near where the fire had come from and than towards the Taurian moving under his left shoulder she helped picking him up and then the two limped into the wood. "Come on keep moving!"  She shouted pain crossed his face but as they got further into the woods the weapons fire began to taper off Sonja continued to push but the wood was more like a bog her feet disappearing into the ground as she moved it didn't help with her injured ally.  "So I cannot keep thinking of you as The Taurian" she stated "what is your name?"

"Erik" he said through the pain and exhaustion.

"Nice to meet you, I am Sonja" she said just as her foot disappeared again into the mud, this time further than before.  Moments later the ground in front of her disappeared and Sonja felt gravity drag her down with Erik still holding on.  "Hang on!"  She screamed as they both began to tumble down the hill, Sonja smashed into some rocks as they fell quickly everything went dark as she lost consciousness.

Sonja awoke within what looked like a cave looking around she saw Erik leaning against a wall, his left leg covered in blood, he was barely conscious.  "Erik?"  She whispered her head pounded.  "What happened?"

"The ground gave way below us, knocked you out, I dragged you here but the bullet in my leg restricted what I could do."  Sonja tried to get up but felt dizzy and sat back down "take your time, you took quite a knock."

"My head does not matter, if we do not stop that wound you could bleed to death."  She said standing unsteadily looking through her utility belt pouches removing the combat first aid kit.  "I will warn, I was not the best at Field Dressings" she said smirking lightly; Erik just nodded the blood loss finally becoming too much for him."  Sonja put pressure on the wound, there was no exit wound meaning the bullet was still in there but she wasn't going to go poking around inside.  She wrapped the dressing around his leg tieing it firmly, trying to stem the blood.  "That should help a little, but you need a doctor."

"I'm not the only one, you're not the most steady on your feet" he croaked "might be a concussion, you shouldn't move around too much."

"I will not move around too much if you do not use so many contractions" Sonja said sitting down opposite him leaning up against the cave wall glancing out the entrance she saw it was raining again "we are not colonizing this planet."  She whispered

"Continuous rain season, nice camouflage if you don't mind the rain."  He said Sonja flinched "sorry, do not mind the rain" Erik sad correcting his speech.

"I mind" Sonja said quietly looking back at Erik "so let me get this right you Taurians ambushed us and destroyed my DropShip and then these pirates ambushed you?"

"Sort of" Erik said "if you Clansmen knew anything about this region you'd realize that this world is used by pirates to raid the Taurian Concordat.  We assaulted your DropShip as we thought you were a pirate force who have been plaguing our world recently."  Erik explained "we thought we had the drop on the pirates but instead we hit you, they bombed your DropShip as we attacked, the explosion devastated both your people and mine leaving the pirates to pick over our remains."

"Great and now we are stuck on a pirate hole both injured, what I do not get is why they are still after you?"  Sonja asked looking at the Taurian warrior.

"You don't know who I am?"  He asked surprised "then your intelligence is slacking."  He said smirking knowingly "I'm Erik Martens-Calderon" he announced "Protector of the Taurian Concordat."  Sonja just stared at him, she hadn't even thought about it why would she?  What the hell the Protector of the Taurian Concordat would be on a backwater like this?

"Why would the Protector be here?"  Sonja asked not convinced

"Training and Recon, I don't want to forget all that I was taught."  Erik countered

"And your pitiful bodyguard unit?"  Sonja asked her unit was small as she only ranked as a Star Commander, a leader of a nation even a periphery one should have a decent sized unit of support and defence.

"We are in the middle of nowhere, this was a training operation."

"Of course" Sonja said, by her side she found her Gauss SMG lay on the ground wrapping her fingers around the trigger she slowly raised it "well Protector, I claim you as my bondsman" she said aiming the weapon at him.

"Of course" he repeated "you do young Clans woman, your great victory against me brings you the Spoils, I think not" he said not moving she kept the SMG trained on him.  He slowly moved glancing at Sonja "after all I've done to keep you alive.  I trust you in a fight Nova Cat but not when I turn my back."  He said his left arm rose in it he held a power pack, Sonja realized it was her SMG's power source.  "We need to start working together" he said slowly "now get some sleep, tomorrow will be a big day."

The night passed with no incident or at least none that Sonja noticed, she awoke the next morning her head far clearer, she noticed that Erik was still slumped against the wall, an SMG at his side she could also see the power pack for her own weapon and that his bandages were soaked through.  Sonja knew that right now she could take his weapon and be in control for the first time since meeting him; if he was the Protector of the Taurian Concordat she could prove to all of Clan Nova Cat her worth in one act.  Looking at the injured man who had been her captor, ally and saviour she realized she held no ill for him, his people had killed her unit but that was combat it was nothing personal.

Moving slowly she got closer to Erik and opened the first aid kit, inside she noticed there was only a couple of bandages left.  Slowly slicing away the soaked bandages she could see the wound wasn't bleeding as badly as it had before but still would require more attention, carefully she bandaged his leg with clean dressings.  She then opened a meal ready to eat ignoring the flavouring these bars had everything in them that needed to keep her alive despite the taste of cardboard.
As she ate Erik came too seeing her so close he shifted to the side in surprise then he noticed his bandages had been changed.

"Good morning" he croaked.

"Morning" she said continuing to demolish the bar, "you should eat one of these, will keep your strength up."  She said handing him a bar, "you did say that today was a big day?"

"Indeed" he said opening the bar taking a bite "oh god" he whispered "these are worse than Taurian combat rations."  He said continuing to eat the bar "yeah, I was thinking last night, we need communications of some sort to call either my people or your people."

"Fallback Position 1 would have communications, ammo and more of these" she said holding up the bar "but it is a fair distance from here but it should be worth it."

"Better than hiding in a cave."  He said looking down at his leg "from pointing a gun at someone to bandaging them up, thank you" he remarked forcing his legs to move he moved to get up Sonja grabbed his arms helping him upright.  "When you're ready, I am" he said.

"We should go"  Sonja said grabbing her utility belt and Gauss SMG turning to face Erik he saw his hand outstretched with the power pack for the weapon.  Sonja reached out to take the pack but Erik's grasp held firm, "we work together now" he said Sonja nodded and he released the power source.  The two continued leaving the cave heading into the rain soaked forests, it had obviously rained again during the night, the ground and plants were soaked, Sonja would have to watch her footing and make sure the same accident did not repeat itself.  Erik was making slow progress behind her his injured leg slowing him considerably, ahead of Erik Sonja stopped and turned her attention to a small tree with her combat knife she sliced down on one of the arms of tree removing it.  She then began to strip off the smaller branches attached to the piece of wood.  Erik joined her shortly afterwards.

"What are you doing?"  He asked watching her; finished with the branches she now cut off the jagged end and handed it to him "I have the rifle" he said indicating to his SMG which despite the name was sized more like an assault rifle.

"It is to help you walk" Sonja said with a smirk before heading off, Erik smiled himself as he braced his injured side on the stick, it wasn't perfect but it helped take the pressure off quite a bit and helped his balance.  They were able to pick up their pace slightly Sonja was still faster than Erik but he was at least keeping up now.  As she was out ahead Sonja was able to keep an eye out for any pirates or hazards before Erik caught up with her and she was able to search for markers that would guide her to the Fallback Position, the woods all looked the same.  Fortunately she could still see smoke from the DropShip's fires blowing in the wind above the tree line, and she knew roughly where the Nova Cat Supply Cache was to where the DropShip had landed.
They travelled for what seemed like hours but was actually only a little over an hour before Sonja saw movement up ahead, crouching down she raised her weapon as she saw five pirates all unshaven and wearing various pieces of old torn clothes standing near the entrance to a small cave.  Each was armed with a rifle of some sort but none wore any type of heavy armour or protective garments.  Erik joined her crouching down as best he could with his leg.  "Are we there yet?"  He said quietly Sonja didn't know if he was joking or being serious.  "Only five?"

"As far as I can see, I think we can take them.  If I flank them to the left and you stay here providing cover fire it should keep them down, then I will catch them in a cross fire."

"Let's go" Erik said getting into a decent firing position "I'll give you a minute then open up."  Sonja nodded and began to sneak through the trees, soon she heard the shouts from the pirates as Erik began to fire, his Gauss SMG was so quiet they were having trouble working out where he was and were firing their rifles into the trees wildly.  Sonja thought she was a decent distance from Erik and turned around towards the store again.  She could see two of the pirates were down on the ground bleeding; the other three were spraying the trees around Erik's position with as much fire as they could muster making an absolute racket.  Dropping her rifle's sights over the pirates Sonja squeezed off her first burst, of the three shots two slammed into her enemy while a third went through the log he'd been sheltering besides shattering it.  Her fire had turned the pirate fire concentrated on Erik into an uncoordinated mess, the remaining two pirates fired wildly into the trees around them.  Both Erik and Sonja had little trouble with single bursts each to bring down the last two men.  Not wasting time Sonja leapt over the log and closed on the Nova Cat storage cave as she walked past the fallen pirates she raised her SMG and fired a burst into each trooper finishing each off whether they were alive or dead, Erik hobbled over to her as she finished the last trooper.

"The amount of noise they made we'll probably have company soon."

"Aff" Sonja said "We should grab what we can and disappear, follow me."  She said entering the cave, about five metres inside the mouth of the cave was a large circular door; Sonja could see a blast mark where the pirates had unsuccessfully tried to enter the cache.  Moving over to the right of the door Sonja raised the butt of her SMG and smashed it into the rocks there, to Erik's surprise the rocks shattered like glass revealing a control panel "blast resistant but hit it in the right place and shatters like an egg."  Sonja explained tying in her code the door groaned and creeked as it began to slowly roll out of the way.

"I don't suppose we can lock ourselves in here?"

"Well it is air-tight once sealed so not a good plan, and now that I have exposed the controls they could get in."  Sonja said heading over to a control panel she activated a series of controls "get us some supplies, I will send the message."

"The pirates will likely hear that too" he warned as he began to look through the supplies instantly picking up a Gauss Pistol, smaller than his SMG, he slipped the weapon into a pocket.

"Aff, but it is either this or we live the rest of our lives on this rock."

"I can think of worse company" Erik said quietly as he grabbed a charcoal jumpsuit and began to strip off his own bloodstained clothing, his comment brought a vaguely amused look from Sonja.  Erik picked up a backpack and glanced inside a first aid kit, some Clan MRE Rations and what looked like a tent were folded inside.  Placing two near the door he began to look at other supplies grabbing several cartridges of Gauss SMG ammo as well, at the door however he could hear movement, reaching for his newly acquired pistol he barely had time to draw it before seeing the first pirate.  Snapping off two shots he saw one catch the pirate in the shoulder throwing him back out of the way.  "We've got more company!"  He shouted a warning firing another couple of shots.

"Fire in the hole!"  Sonja shouted from behind him and Erik saw a small object fly past his head instinctively he ducked moments later the object exploded in the cave mouth collapsing the rocks there effectively sealing them in.

"You think that was the best idea?"  We're trapped in here and their Mechs could dig us out."  He warned.

"Aff, we can use the escape tunnel."  Sonja said moving past Erik she set some more explosives behind the fallen rocks then re-entered the cache "come on in" she said Erik looked at her cautiously.

"You said it was air-tight."  He said, the last thing he wanted to do was seal himself into a hole with someone who had been his enemy just days before.

"Looks like they finished the secondary tunnel, once I seal this one the other should unlock instantly."  She said grabbing a Mauser IIC Assalt Rifle off the weapons rack slinging it over her shoulder.  "The signal has been set to a repeating pattern.  You have the supplies?"

"Here" Erik said handing her a pack "anything else?"

"Just this" Sonja said picking up a small pack.  Heading for the emergency exit tunnel the door door at the end was as Sonja had said ajar but as they got there Erik noticed why they could not remain within the cache, the door led out the other side of the hill and was completely exposed it wouldn't take the pirates long to find and breach it.  Before she left the tunnel Sonja dropped her second pack "move as quickly as possible towards the tree line" she said pointing out ahead of them "move" she ordered.  Erik began to move ahead of her as Sonja worked on the pack for a moment before joining him helping speed up his pace, moments later the entrance to the cave exploded behind them.

"Nice precaution" Erik noted looking over his shoulder, Sonja continued to move but Erik pushed her to the ground "DOWN!"  He shouted seeing the incoming pirates, as she fell out the way Erik pulled up his Gauss SMG and peppered the area where the pirates were coming from.  On the ground Sonja rolled over to her side and pulled the Mauser IIC into her arms spraying the pirate's area with pulse laser blasts.  "We're in trouble" Erik said quietly looking down at the prone Nova Cat warrior he could see more pirates than she.

"Let's even the odds" she said rising to her feet she flicked the secondary trigger on her Mauser IIC launching a fragmentation grenade.  The grenade landed between several of the pirates and exploded sending bodies flying everywhere.  Instantly Sonja triggered a second grenade followed by more pulse laser fire sending more pirates for cover.  Erik continued to add his Gauss SMG to her cover fire however they were not moving and did not have an infinite amount of ammunition.

"Oh hell!"  Erik shouted a warning seeing the pirates extra firepower "trust them to have a BattleMech close at hand."  He said the torso mounted machine gun and laser immediately opened fire both Erik and Sonja hit the deck.  "Got anything else to even the odds?"  He asked as the BattleMech continued to fire into the area Sonja aded another grenade to the launcher.

"That is not a BattleMech.  It's a Sarissa" she said quietly looking at the Mech "an IndustrialMech dressed up as a BattleMech.  See how it likes this" she said raising the Mauser again she fire this time when the grenade reached the Mech it exploded just before impact showering the Mech in napalm.  "Something our scientists have been working on, poor man's inferno."  She said smirking Erik nodded watching as pirate infantry scrambled to clear the fire, it wouldn't stop the Mech but it would slow it down.
"If you find a poor man who has a weapon like that, point him in the direction of my quartermaster, I want his supplier’s name."  Erik said as the two of them began to crawl away from the scene, they were by no means in the clear but hopefully they had bought themselves some more time clear of the pirate forces.  And on this planet time was all they needed.

Helping each other almost until they could not move anymore Sonja and Erik finally stopped under several large trees there the two collapsed in a heap exhausted, the pirates had given up their chase but now both were exhausted and lost.  "We'll rest here" Erik said opening up his survival pack he noticed a couple of bullet holes, looking through the pack he noticed they'd gone straight through his survival tent in several places "this could be a problem" he said pulling it out, "what a mess."  He said as it began to fold out, the Clan built tent was made of mimic-weave cloth and stands by attaching an electrical charge it should instantly assemble to a pre-determined shape, however when Erik added power to his tent it barely assembled several bullet holes appearing.

"It probably saved your life."  Sonja said indicating to the bullets that fell from the pack "we can share mine."  She said pulling out her tent which assembled perfectly it was only a one person shelter but it was better than nothing as the rain began again.  Climbing into the tent together Erik initially tried facing away from Sonja but it didn't work neither felt comfortable so he rolled over facing her back.  Surprisingly Sonja snuggled up to him as they laid there "don't get any ideas, Taurian."  She whispered using a rarely used contraction.

"Trust me Nova Cat I have no idea what is going on.  One minute it's a simple mission, next we have enemies everywhere and now I'm sleeping with one of those enemies."  He remarked "all I can say is it's been one crazy week."  He said, "I bet you anything this is the last situation you expected to be in?"  He asked quietly "Sonja" he whispered but got no response, it took Erik a few moments to realize she was asleep.  Leaning over to his side he checked and found his Gauss SMG laying beside him ready at a moment's notice, he'd rest but he'd make sure Sonja was safe while she slept she was more mobile than he if either of them was going to pull them through it would be her.

The night had passed uneventfully Sonja had awoken after a few hours sleep to find Erik still awake keeping watch over her.  Checking his wounded leg she changed his dressings again then forced the Taurian to take some sleep and let her take watch, with the small tent she'd slept close to him sharing his body heat and making it comfortable for the two of them.  Within the Clans this would be seen as simple survival, if Sonja had been a Trueborn she'd perhaps have seen nothing in this situation however Sonja was a freeborn brought up as the daughter of Canin Rosse and Yvonne Nova Cat, she knew how things could develop and the strength in such things, as a Clan Warrior she'd never expected have anything like her parents life.  Although she felt nothing but comradely for Erik, he was her ally not her lover, she wondered if laying like this was how it always felt for those who loved another.

The morning came and it continued to rain, Erik was still exhausted and Sonja let him sleep, save his energy for when they needed it she was also growing used to his presence there.  Erik didn't lay there asleep for long only a couple hours after the sun had risen he awoke almost immediately raising his weapon pointing it at the door of the tent.  "It is all quiet" Sonja whispered "seems they have decided to leave us alone for a while."

"Probably still trying to get into the weapons cache."   Erik muttered "shame we have to leave it for a bunch of pirates."

"The explosives probably messed it up a bit."  Sonja said Erik nodded "with luck the communications is still broadcasting."

"Indeed" Erik agreed "so what do we do now?"

"I do not like hiding" Sonja said rolling onto her back slitting up slightly "but our weapons will not return fire against a Mech" she said unhappy at being unable to get some payback, they hadn't done too bad so far but even against the sole IndustrialMech she'd seen so far they couldn't do much.

"Some of my people could be alive."  Erik said quietly, so far he hadn't mentioned his own people Sonja knew that her people were likely dead killed in the DropShip explosion.  "I don't know how much difference us two could make but you never know."

"I think we have a mission" Sonja said smiling, Erik nodded "let's get packed up and head out.  If the pirates are still searching the wreckage of my DropShip and the Cache we might get lucky at your LZ."  She said crawling out of the tent at the door she raised her Gauss SMG and checked all around the the tent making sure there was no-one close by.

"It's would be just like us to have good luck" Erik said quietly crawling out behind her, it was more difficult with his leg but he could tell the bandages were helping his wound, he could feel the strength slowly returning.  "Let's go" he said smirking it was so easy with Sonja, for the first time in a good while he enjoyed just being Erik instead of Erik Martens-Calderon Protector of the Taurian Concordat.

After a short time they had completed their tidying up the camp and began heading for the Taurian's LZ this time Erik taking the lead while Sonja followed him watching their rear.  The two continued through the woods in silence for a while but soon they both realized there was no-one near them or searching for them.  "So how are your Nova Cats enjoying the Periphery?"  Erik had asked beginning the conversation, he was purely curious from a personal perspective but he also knew anything he learned could help his nation.

"We are doing as we always do, following a vision of the Khan."  Sonja said quite spookily.  Erik looked confused "our Khan and Oathmaster before the Invasion of the Inner Sphere shared a vision that put the Nova Cats on their own path away from the other Invading Clans, if we stayed in the Homeworlds we were dead, if we invade the Inner Sphere we would cease to be the Clan that we were.  So we chose our own path."

"So wait you invaded a pirate realm following a dream one of your leaders had?  Are you nuts?"  Erik asked both surprised and annoyed

"Some of the other Clans think so."  Sonja confirmed "however the results of the Nova Cat labours cannot be denied, we have flourished where we are despite what is there."

"Just because the Davion's have given you an easy ride" Erik said "if they had stood up to your threat, we would have support them, despite our differences we know a real threat when we see one."  Sonja laughed out aloud.

"If only you could hear yourself."  She said stopping short "scared of the menace that has never once caused you issue."

"You are scouting worlds near us."  Erik accused

"For colonization, our population grows faster than we can currently support and sustain."  Sonja explained "and as for the Davion's they know what threat we pose them" she said "none."

"We'll see a time will come when Davion sees you as a threat as they see us."  Erik said giving her a warning he'd heard all his life Cham Kithrong, the man who had raised him with his mercenary mother was not a great believer in the Calderon belief that the Federated Suns was a major threat to the Taurian Concordat however Erik had slowly began to see where many of his Marshals and where the Calderon belief came from.  Not because Davion regularly caused them issue but because of the hatred many Taurians felt for the Federated Suns, it wouldn't be hard to believe from a Davion perspective that the irrational hatred from the Taurians could spill out into violence and everyone knew the Taurians would be willing to use weapons of mass destruction if it came to it in offence or defence.  All it would take is one Taurian to believe the Federated Suns had wronged them for a major war to begin.  The Nova Cats on the other hand were a major threat to the Federated Suns, Erik had heard stories of their mighty WarShips and their armies of advanced technology, and already experienced combat against Clan Elementals, he knew their worth in combat and had the scars as a reminder.

"We will be no threat until our Khan changes, after all our current Khan understands the Federated Suns and First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion better than anyone else within our Clan."  She saw Erik's confusion "his partner for life, wife you would saw, is Victor's younger sister Yvonne Steiner-Davion.  His children, the first children to a Khan since the founding of the Clans, are of their blood.  Freeborn and likely never leaders of our Clan, never able to take a Bloodname but still important parts in understanding the Federated Suns."

"You have sons of Davion in your ranks" Erik said stunned "perhaps I underestimated your Clan, taming House Davion is quite a feat."  He remarked

"House Davion is hardly tamed, and it is a Son and Daughter."  Sonja shot back Erik smiled at her near instant comeback at his comment "my brother and I" she finished.  Now it was Sonja's turn to smile as Erik's face was covered in shock as he realized exactly who Sonja was. "Changes things Quiaff?"  She asked moving off ahead of the Taurian.

"Aye" Erik answered he couldn't help but respect the Clans woman.  She had put past their differences shared supplies with him, kept him alive, shared a tent and bed to keep him awake.  Despite her Clan origin he trusted her with his life, but could he get past the knowledge that she had Davion blood in her?  A direct descendant of the ruling line of the Federated Suns, the Concordat's historical enemy.  Since Erik had assumed the Protectorship he had questioned some of the old beliefs, but could he ever get past that?  He followed her slowly still thinking about it, it was strange how moments before his thoughts had been completely different, would the Calderon family ever change?  Stopping for a moment he looked up at her still moving away watching the forests for pirates, he watched Sonja move, carefully methodically, just like a Davion, no just like someone wanting to stay alive.  Just like the woman who had engaged his Battle Armour suit with the weapon at her side knowing she was hopelessly outgunned and could not win.  How could he treat her different just because of something she could not control?  Erik decided right there that from him the Calderon line would be different not judge each book by its title, or each person by their name, he needed to his life could depend on it.

It took the two of them almost three hours to travel between their campsite and the area used by the Taurians as a staging area most of which was spent in silence from both travelling companions working out exactly where they stood with each other.  Fortunately Erik's sense of direction did not let him down as they travelled through the rain soaked forest and soon they could see the Taurian DropShip still standing where Erik had left it all those days before.  The DropShip, a Union sat in a small clearing with a small fenced off area near it, there was one BattleMech a twenty ton Wasp on patrol as well as a couple of pirate troopers visible but none seemed particularly interested in what they were doing.  "Anything special about the DropShip?"  Sonja whispered, they were still a distance from the vessel but better not to take chances.

"The Aerospace Launch doors are fake" Erik answered "that entire deck was gutted by engineering teams instead we carried a Battle Armour maintenance and training area.  Large enough for sixteen troopers."  He explained "otherwise it's standard Union, the weapons are upgraded to Star League Standard."

"No special security?"  Sonja asked surprised that the vessel that had carried the Taurian leader had no special systems.

"The Battle Armour were security as well as a deployable asset, the corridors are slightly wider so they could pass anywhere in the ship but all the original suits were destroyed fighting the Nova Cats and the pirates."  Erik said plainly trying not to think about the men that had been his platoon killed fighting to defend him.  "I think the crew would probably be held on the Battle Armour deck if they are still alive, if we can get to them we could maybe launch, it would maximize our chances of being picked up."

"Aff" Sonja nodded agreeing without saying much else her eyes searching the area around the DropShip.

"What are you thinking?"  Erik asked watching her eyes

"I think if you could run this would be easier."  Sonja said bluntly "I will make a distraction, you make for the Mechbay doors, get aboard and make sure they can not lock me out."  She said raising heading off "move as quickly as you can when you see my signal."  She said moving off.

"I assume I'll know it when I see it."  Erik whispered more to himself than anything.  Sonja rapidly disappeared into the trees cutting diagonally across the face of the DropShip carefully staying hidden by the trees and plants.   Once beyond the DropShip she got behind the fenced off area and saw exactly what she needed, within the area was a whole load of BattleMech ordinance from Machine Gun ammo to reloads for missile and rocket launchers.

"Perfect" she said pulling back she climbed a small tree, level with the head of the Wasp BattleMech.  In her hands she held the Mauser IIC, aiming at the BattleMech she knew she couldn't do any major damage to the huge machine but that wasn't the intention.  Aiming for the light Mech's head she triggered off her first and second bursts, pulse laser blasts tore across the Mech's lightly armoured head.  The blasts did not damage but they got the Mech's attention as well as the attention of the pirate infantry guards that were around the DropShip.  Snapping off another burst she hit the Mech again before pulling back behind the ammo dump.  The Wasp continued to close it's machine gun spraying the tree Sonja had just jumped down from with fire, the pilot obviously not a rookie carefully avoided walking into the ammunition store walking around while continuing to cover the trees in machine gun fire.  Knowing that the pilot would soon have traveled around the ammo and could fire on her directly flicked the Mauser to it's secondary trigger and fired her last grenade into the ammo dump while diving for cover, the Mauser IIC flying from her hands as she dived.

The explosion was massive more than one hundred tons of ammo exploded almost as soon as the napalm like substance made contact with the crates, the explosion picked up the Wasp and threw the twenty ton machine nearly sixty metres through the air smashing head first into the ground the pilot if not killed by the explosion was definitely killed by the impact, the Mech somersaulted several times before crashing to a halt.  Sonja rolled over on the ground as trees burst into fire all around her, avoiding the flames she leapt back to her feet as two of the pirate infantry approached somehow they had avoided the exploding ammunition and flying BattleMech.  She reached for her Gauss SMG at her back but the pirates were almost on her their weapons raised, raising her arms she prepared to surrender just as two bursts of fire caught the pirates from behind, looking up Sonja saw Erik moving for the DropShip firing his SMG at the pirate troopers it was a wonder shot to have taken both pirates down with such precision but Sonja did not question it instead running for the DropShip drawing her own SMG.
Erik climbed the ramp into the DropShip before Sonja and immediately fell back on his close quarters training covering all the corners of the room he quickly gunned down two pirates who had been answering the explosion outside.  In the bay there were two pirate BattleMechs present a medium Griffin and a heavier Catapult, looking up at both Mechs Erik was glad neither Mech was powered or had pirates near them.  If even one of the Mechs had been powered up it would be game over for their plan.  Moving into the room the sound of assault rifle fire filled the air as the pirates within the DropShip reacted, Erik dived for cover only popping up to return fire, Sonja quickly joined him in the Mechbay "three shooters, twelve to three o'clock elevation three metres!" Erik shouted rapidly over the noise of the incoming fire Sonja quickly popped up gunning down one of the pirates in the centre of the three.

"Two, twelve and three!" She shouted back ducking down as more assault rifle fire cut through the area Sonja looked at Erik and both nodded, popping up together they peppered the area where the pirates were, both remaining pirates fell in a hail of Gauss SMG fire.  "Moving!" Sonja called out rushing forward she fired more rounds into the downed pirates seeing an AX-22 Imperator Assault Rifle on one of the pirates she grabbed up the weapon and two additional magazines pushing her Gauss SMG back to her back.  "Clear!" she called back to Erik, dropping to one knee she covered the main entry door and elevator as the Taurian warrior caught up with her and moved past.

"Moving!"  Erik answered as he moved passing Sonja's crouched position into the corridor clearing the first three rooms in the corridor before dropping to a crouch in a doorway.  "Clear" he shouted back.  Sonja then repeated his move clearing the next three rooms stooping at the foot of an access ladder checking both up and down before stopping.  As Erik joined her she climbed the ladder up to the next level waiting for him at the top.  Two more pirates appeared on that level Sonja emptied the remains of her AX-22 magazine cutting both men down as Erik appeared on the level.  Swapping over mags the two cleared the rooms, moving methodically room to room finding no resistance.

"Quiet?" Sonja said

"Too quiet" Erik agreed as the two moved up the stairs before they could reach the top of the spiral stairs machine gun fire cut through the air cutting into the bulkheads above them.  "Nice" Erik shouted "they've jury rigged a Battle Armour Machine Gun."  He said seeing the weapon even from a distance he was acutely aware of the weapon and it's dangers.  "One thing they probably haven't considered" he said after the machine gun fired a second burst just missing his head, there was an audible thud down the corridor "that thing runs hot" he said standing up, the two pirates were looking at their now useless overheated weapon, two rapid bursts cut down both pirates.

Heading down the corridor they found a secured door, punching in his override code Erik quickly released the door both he and Sonja raised their weapons as the door opened revealing seven members of the DropShip crew.  "Protector" one of them called out with surprise.

"Where's the rest of the crew?"  Erik asked knowing there should be double that amount of crewmen and techs.

"Most of the Battle Armour and Mech techs were taken to the Clan DropShip to identify salvage.  The Captain and two senior officers were executed for failing to help the pirates."

"We're taking back the ship follow us."  Erik said handing one of the DropShip crew his Gauss Pistol while others grabbed up pirate weapons dropped on the deck.  With more manpower they rapidly cleared the next two levels of the DropShip finding little resistance until they reached the entrance to the bridge.  Two more pirates died in a hail of weapons fire trying to stop Erik, Sonja and the DropShip's crew again Erik's personal override code opened the doors to the bridge to the dismay of both the pirates in the room both of whom surrendered immediately.  "Subaltern, secure the Mechbay and seal all pressure doors, prepare for immediate take off."  Erik ordered the most senior member of the DropShip crew "you men secure these two in one of the crew quarters."  He said looking at the two captured pirates who were quickly marched away.

"What about your friend?"  One of the crewmen asked looking at Sonja still clutching the AX-22 in her hands.

"She's with me."  Erik said in a clear tone, no-one was to go near her, it was obvious to everyone in the room Sonja included that Erik was in charge no-one spoke up until the vessel was prepared.  Both Erik and Sonja secured themselves in jump seats as the Subaltern counted down the launch procedures, two Pirate BattleMechs had approached the vessel but the weapons of the DropShip were keeping them at bay.  Then suddenly the vessel shot into the air blasting clear of the forests quickly heading into space.

"Two minor hull breaches reported sir, but manageable" one of the crewmen said manning one of the consoles "we've began to broadcast on all Taurian military frequencies, if there's a JumpShip out there they'll pick it up."

"Excellent work."  Erik said as natural gravity began to disappear to be replaced by the DropShip's thrust generated lighter gravity "Captain" he said turning to the Subaltern.  "We're going to retire to my quarters, have the crew do a full sweep of the vessel and ensure we have no pirates still aboard.  Apprise me of any changes."  Erik said rising from his chair Sonja released herself from her chair and followed Erik from the bridge still clutching the AX-22.  Erik's personal quarters were not far from the bridge, the pirates had made a complete mess of the room but at least the bed was still in one piece.  "You're not going to need that again aboard this vessel."  He said taking the assault rifle from her hands slowly calmly, placing it on a table nearby.  "You can have the bed, I'll sleep on the couch."  He said turning away from her after a moment moment's later Sonja's arms appeared around him.

"Space is cold, you shared my bed once, share it again" she asked turning him in her arms, for a moment there was only them their eyes could see nothing else.  A kiss gave Sonja all the answer she needed for her request.  The DropShip would take another three days to reach the the jump point in that ti

Starliner One
Terran Orbit, Sol System
Star League Protectorate
1st April 3085

On the 18th anniversary of ComStar’s return to the Terran system and the beginning of the Liberation of Terra, the scene is far different in orbit.  Flanked by three Star League WarShips a former vessel of the ComGuard, the Blake’s Vengeance, was relaunched as the Starliner One.  Purchased by Virgin Global and Interstellar Transport’s owner Sir Richard Branson X the vessel had been nearly fully disarmed and rebuilt from the ground up as a civilian transport vessel, a weapon of war re-designated as Luxury Liner.

Equipped with various entertainment decks the ship could carry twelve hundred passengers in the best quarters on any space ship ever built.  Attached to the vessel are six further passenger DropShips with an equal amount of passengers.  The vessel is equipped with an Earth deck that mimicked a planet’s surface, a massive pool, a climbing area for a more active passenger, a Space Deck with allowed passengers to do there own EVA experiences and space walks.  And a Drone targeting arena which allowed passengers to shoot down specially built two ton drones using the Starliner One’s specially modified weapons.

The whole purpose of the Starliner One was to offer passengers a new type of experience, life aboard a large space going vessel that unlike JumpShips could travel anywhere within a planetary system.  In a deal done with all the Succession States the Starliner One is given rights to visit ever single Succession State capital and cross borders completely unmolested.  As a mark of respect to the Star League and to mark this year’s Martial Olympiad the Starliner One first enters the Federated Suns on its multi-year journey.

Oriente One, Oriente Orbit
Oriente Protectorate
Former Free Worlds League
15th April 3085

In orbit over Oriente Captain-General Jonas Halas stood aboard the system’s newest space station.  At fifteen thousand tons it was smaller than many DropShips but the station’s potential far outweigh’s its mass and size.  “Ladies and Gentlemen the Oriente One is Oriente’s first step towards a lasting defensive strategy.  Mounting one of the largest deployable Naval Weapons the Heavy Naval Gauss Rifle the Oriente-class Defence Gun is designed to keep Oriente’s enemies at a distance.  While its fighters will serve a double purpose be able to assist customs operations and search and rescue during peace time and provide the station with an additional asset during conflict.”  He said explaining the features of this new station; all in all it was a floating gun capable of hurling Heavy Naval Gauss rounds at an enemy at extreme ranges.  “This station is as I said the first step.  I have already authorized construction of nine further Defence Guns like this one, all purposed with protecting our capital from all threats.  Once Oriente is safe, we will look at protecting further worlds with this type of defence station, my dearest hope is that one day every world of the Protectorate will have its own station ready to defend against all aggressors.”  He said honestly, unfortunately unless these worlds funded these stations themselves that was perhaps best described as a pipe dream.  And even then one Defence Gun would never be enough, Oriente One would defend Oriente from certain avenues of attack however it could not move and its turning speed was a fraction of that capable by an enemy combat vessel.  For now the gun was a useful asset for the system however to make it effective, it would require all its sister stations working in unison with it, then and only then would Oriente be truly safe and Jonas was dedicated to that goal.

Stone Spirit Claimed Space
Periphery regions
Outpost *27
21st April 3085

After spending nearly a year-and-a-half exploring the remains of RWR Outpost #27 the Stone Spirits, remains of Clan Stone Rhino and Blood Spirit, had explored and found just about all they could on their initial claimed planet.  The replica of the Forbidden City was now their thriving capital city with the civilians bringing the world back to life.  From there they had sent forages into nearby systems and found three of the systems had habitable worlds all former worlds of the Rim Worlds Republic abandoned when the SLDF had smashed the resistance there.

On each of the three worlds they found factories, warehouses and entire cities abandoned almost like they had been restored since the SLDF had been here and abandoned again.  Seeing the potential in these worlds and the obvious lack of interested in them by the Lyran Commonwealth the two Clans made a choice.  They decide that the Clan history and traditions that they all grew up with have actually been what is holding them back and instead of following them blindly to oblivion they choose to forge their own path.  Civilians are encouraged to take surnames although names from both the Clans and Inner Sphere are forbidden instead ancient historical English and American names like Lincoln, Patton, Montgomery, Churchill, Bush and Thatcher become common place.  Those warriors who have gained a Bloodname within the Clans are allowed to keep their names however they are never to be hereditary.  Finally the last scout party returned reporting the discovery of an ancient shipyard in one of the scouted systems.  The Stone Spirit leaders realize it’s time to move rapidly moving forces into five of the scouted systems taking over facilities and fortifying their positions.

AUTHOR NOTE: I wrote this before ISP3 so Outpost 27 is far more useful than it is in canon...

May's a short one, so here is May and June

Duke’s official Residence
Public Announcement
Liberty, Star League Protectorate
10th May 3085

A Star League Press Conference was called in the early hours of Liberty’s morning to announce the death of Duke Najemdeem Soshan.  The unpopular duke is reported to have died in his sleep; the forty-two year old had previously been thought to have been in perfect health.  Rumours persist that Soshan’s death is suspicious and that the Star League are quietly brushing it under the carpet.  As the ranking officer on the planet General Bannister Cameron, commander of the Second Royal Armoured Division, is placed as guardian over the world.  The time displaced General is a Cameron of direct blood decent to the former Terran Hegemony’s ruling line.  Now that he has been placed so conveniently in a liege lord position of an entire planet is too much for many conspiracy theorists.

Quatre Belle Shipyards
Raven Alliance, Periphery
21st May 3085

Clan Goliath Scorpion’s WarShips Prometheus and Sagitta arrive at Quatre Belle shipyards to begin refit works.  The Goliath Scorpions quickly win rights to have their vessels maintenance completed by Snow Raven engineers and for the Goliath Scorpions to gain access to the Star League-era facility.  Soon after the ships begin the long trek back to Clan space along the Exodus Road in their possession is tons of Star League artifacts, information on the original Star League and more importantly the Second Armoured Cavalry Division.  A living breathing relic of the original Star League with even better heritage than the Eridani Light Horse Brigade something most Goliath Scorpions of the past would have died to see.

Davion High Command Meeting
Fox’s Den, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
3rd June 3085

Standing up in front of the assembled heads of the Armed forces of the Federated Suns’ High Command was nothing new to Marshal Galen Cox.  However today was a special day the day one of his ideas would be unveiled, he had been working it with the First Prince since the Varnay Crisis, Victor believed it was time for their work to put it into public view.  Representing the three Marches Field Marshals Nathaniel Hasek, Tarncred Sandoval and Paul Bowman were all present however none of them knew what to expect.

â€œLadies and Gentlemen, I hope you are all in good health, welcome to the Fox’s Den” he started.  “I have been working with the First Prince to update the structure of units within the AFFS.”  He continued, seeing worried faces already the AFFS was a combined arms military it had been for centuries since the reforms of First Prince Melissa Davion and it was widely regarded as the most professional military within the Inner Sphere, even the reformed Star League had taken some pointers from it.  “The Regimental Combat Team is very effective at pressing an invasion or forcing an enemy onto the defence however in many cases it is overkill especially for garrison duty.  An RCT is also difficult to transport and strains our still stretched resources requiring multiple JumpShips just for a single unit.”  In the case of the largest RCTs transporting 8 regiments’ worth of troops and support equipment was a costly and difficult manner.  With much of the Federated Suns production placed on WarShips and Assault DropShips conventional JumpShips were as always at a premium.

â€œMyself and the First Prince believe there is a way to keep our current doctrine but make the logistics easier and allow us to garrison our more worlds, and protect our people, more effectively but without losing strength.”  He said choosing his words carefully; the next part would be the real sore part for some of the commanders but necessary.  “We have decided to instead create the Light Combat Team which are detailed in the documents in front of you.”  He directed them to the small stacks of papers around them.  “Smaller than a traditional RCT the LCT is based around the concept of a single Reinforced Mech Battalion of four companies.  Supporting them would be a regiment of Heavy or assault armour vehicles and a regiment of medium to light armoured vehicles.  With artillery battalion attached to particularly important defensive positions.  For infantry support the LCT will have a regiment of Battlle Armour trained troops and a further regiment of engineering, security and support personnel.  This will be the model for future independent units and for regional March units.”  He said he could see the shock on Field Marshal Sandoval and Hasek’s faces there three RCTs were being cut down to size.  “However to counter this each March will be allowed to raise a brigade of five such formations instead of currently three.”

â€œSire, why listen to these Lyrans?”  Tarncred Sandoval asked looking towards Victor both Galen Cox and Marshal of Armies Reinhart Steiner were from the Lyran realm and had chosen to remain in the Federated Suns after the Federated Commonwealth split, both men also have very close ties to the First Prince.  “They never accepted our ways of battle, why break something that is not broken?”

â€œThis is hardly a Lyran model Field Marshal" Victor said harshly banishing those thoughts in an instant "I do not see companies of ponderous assault Mechs, I do not see generals who would rather sit at a desk than fight with their people.  I see a system that is broken, Tarncred."  He said becoming personal with the Field Marshal they knew each other well Victor was not so distant with the man than he had been with Tarncred's father.  "But it is one we can change to suit where we are and where we are going.  The formations you speak of can handle offensives but they leave large swaths of our territory undefended a commander is forced to compromise if he requires to defend multiple worlds.  With an increased presence along our borders, from multiple factions, we need to be able to cover large areas and react to them.”

â€œThese formations could barely handle a Clan Cluster.” Nathaniel Hasek commented almost seeing where the First Prince was going.

â€œThey were created to handle just that.”  Galen countered “our borders have Snow Ravens, Nova Cats and Sea Foxes along them.  These units are very mobile; most Clan Clusters can be organized into two DropShips which are easily transported in a single JumpShip.  We can only transport elements of an RCT in those same ships and it takes us longer to mobilize.  An LCT can be transported in a single large JumpShip, which future production will be geared towards.”

â€œWhat about formations that are already RCT in size should we break them?”  Paul Bowman asked his own Cossacks were only just building to full strength, the people of Tikonov had worked very hard to create these formations he didn't want to see them broken so soon it would hurt his people.

â€œNo” Victor said quietly conceding the point, he'd guessed this was one point he could not win before today came.  “Current independent and March RCTs will be maintained in size until combat losses or transfers reduce them in size.  Already both the First Kestrel Grenadiers and the First Federated Suns Armoured Cavalry have begun to make these changes.  The Grenadiers is already an LCT in all but name while the combat losses the Armoured Calvary took on Sian has reduced them to a little more than what an LCT will be.  Field Marshal Cox has already sent orders to both units informing them of their new designations and of the fact that they will now have permanently assigned transport assets.  Other units such as the Uhlans and the Kittery Borderers are likely too large to slim down anytime soon without causing massive disruption.”

â€œWhat about other formations?  The Davion Guard, Crucis Lancers, and New Avalon Guards are they to be ‘slimmed down’ as well?”  Nathaniel Hasek asked noticing these Brigade had not been mentioned.

â€œNo” Victor admitted “I will not weaken the core of the Federated Suns armed forces.  Your March forces are designated to react to and guard the borders of the Federated Suns holding our enemies up, the core brigades of the AFFS will form the hammer for your anvils.”

â€œOther commands such as the New Ivaarsen Chaussers and Deneb Light Cavalry will be downgraded to LCT formations as we move forward.”  Galen continued trying to cover Victor's sudden defence.  “While the Ceti Hussars will remain at strength since their combat command formations are already broken along similar lines to the LCT concept.  Their combat teams can already cover multiple worlds easily.  Additionally the Second and Third Ceti Hussars have been placed in line for Robinson-class Transport support.”

â€œOur forces are diminished but independent Brigades gain WarShip support!”  Tarncred said shaking his head wondering what his nation was coming to and where the First Prince was leading them.

â€œNone of your forces have been diminished.”  Victor said getting annoyed “in fact I have given you permission to raise two additional units each and those units already raised can maintain their RCT status until combat losses take their tole.  Once all your forces are to LCT status as per AFFS Guidelines."  Victor stressed here was going to have to concede but one he was willing to "you may if you wish increase them back to RCT strength, but you will from your own pockets.  Not from the AFFS funds the Quartermaster's Office, MIIO and DMI will all be watching where the appropriation of funds go."  Victor warned.  "And if such a built up unit needs to move you will hire the transport yourselves.”  He said sternly “perhaps instead of worrying about your personal armies you should concentrate on spending money on the March Militias, they could very easily supplement an LCT in defence if their equipment and training was increased.”  He suggested noticing Nathaniel Hasek nodding, he’d thought of that already, 'time for a new approach' Victor thought.

â€œYour Five LCTs could rotate through your marches conducting cadre duty with all the March militias building a far tighter defence of our nation instead of units becoming comfortable on important worlds.”  He pointed out, "too often units are assigned to the same world for years on end only leaving for combat, and when they encounter terrain they were unfamiliar with they lose the initiative even in defence."  Both Galen and Victor could see it, they had also seen how easily Clan clusters moved compared to the units of the AFFS and LCAF during the initial Clan invasion.  Thoughts of a return to that way of thinking brought chills to Victor's heart he was in a position to make the AFFS prepared for the new way of operating and his Field Marshals were going to listen.  Although none of the three men would leave New Avalon happy they were pleased enough to maintain some of their forces and that they had the authority to maintain their positions even if it meant spending a little more.  For Victor he was content enough that the Field Marshals had taken his directives in, but he knew that the MIIO and DMI would be more busy in the future watching his own people's spending than their enemies unfortunately the Varnay Crisis had proven that one of the Federated Suns' greatest threats was itself.

Border Raid
Baltazar III, Timbuktu Province
Lyran Commonwealth
9th June 3085

The Marian Hegemony had caught the Lyran Commonwealth completely flatfooted by jumping into the Baltazar III system with a four hundred thousand ton WarShip something larger than anything anyone expected them to be able to field other than the Lola III-class Hanse which Caesar Katrina Ward had taken from Clan Ice Hellion’s remnant forces.  This ship was nothing like the slick Star League-era vessel instead this craft was almost like a flying brick with little to distinguish it other than its obvious firepower.  Constructed from materials taken from the Free Worlds League and locally sourced materials the WarShip was nowhere near as capable as some line WarShips of the Inner Sphere or the Clans.  But, more importantly, it was a WarShip which currently was more than the Lyran Commonwealth had in the Baltazar III system.

On the ground things were going just as bad the defending Fifteenth Arcturan Guards were under heavy fire from multiple directions.  Leutenant Katrina Allard was in the middle of everything and it wasn’t going well her BNDR-01D Bandersnatch was the last active Mech in her lance one of her lancemates was dead his cockpit cored by laser fire.  The other two hadn't ejected nor had they communicated.

â€œThis is Allard-9670, under heavy fire in grid fifty-two, reinforcements required.”  She communicated as her seventy-five ton Mech was hit by a heavy autocannon.  Torso twisting to the left she fired her left arm autocannon into a Marian Hunchback.  “Repeat reinforcements required…” she began as the Hunchback turned its own torso bringing its autocannon to bear “oh hell, this is 9670 ejecting!” She screamed as she pulled the cords launching her ejector seat into the air as the air rushed past the Hunchback’s fire tore the remains of her Bandersnatch to pieces.

In the sky she could see Marian forces advancing throughout the area.  The parachutes deployed above her and slowly the seat began its return towards the ground, which currently was probably the last place she wanted to be.  Without a Mech she would be doing this on foot, as the seat landed with a thud, quickly unbuckling from the seat she opened up the back of the chair to retrieve her survival equipment finding only a laser pistol had survived her ejection.  No medical supplies, no rations and no clothes.  As situations went Katrina couldn't think of a worse situation she had ever been in now she had to rely on her training, she was however a Kell Hound in training and at heart.  Darting into the nearby bushes she hid until nightfall watching as the Marians moved through her area she watched as Marian Ravager Assault Battle Armour followed by infantry.

Five days later Katrina escaped Marian controlled territory to a surprised Lyran infantry squad, she learned that Leutenant Luther Fisk had been killed in the fighting and that Colonel Butcher was badly injured but that the regiment was continuing to hold and the LCS Kevin Tamar, a Fox-class Corvette, and the LCS Durance, a Coventry-class Corvette, had arrived in system with the Fifth Alliance Guards RCT.  For Katrina this conflict had not gone well she had lost her first BattleMech in combat without a single kill to her name.

Twelfth Star League Games
Star League Stadium
Solaris VII, Lyran Commonwealth
18th June 3085

The Twelfth Star League Games on Solaris VII kicks off at the Star League stadium.  Unlike the year before where a Quickdraw carrying hand held Mech sized weaponry sponsored by Successor State R&D won the competition this year it is the duelist’s competition.  MechWarrior Duncan Lassiter long term Solaris VII jock who had only recently returned to the world immediately headed the pack in his own customized Quickdraw known as Death Incarnate.  Customized beyond anything the original designers had ever envisioned.  Rebuilt from the ground up the Mech had its own customized skeleton, Light Engine and torso mounted cockpit, the head had been rebuilt with a skull head instead of a cockpit.  The Mech was armed with a Hatchet, Dual Extended Range Large and Medium Lasers and Small Pulse lasers.  Rounding up the Mech’s capabilities were jump jets and a targeting computer.  Storming ahead and never giving up his lead Lassiter walked the competition and was crowned the new Star League Champion.

A quick update for July

Clan Snow Raven Territory
Lum, Kerensky Cluster
Clan Homeworlds
4th July 3085

While Solaris VII’s games are a show of skill and raw firepower for the entertainment of others, half a galaxy away on the Clan Homeworld of Lum there was fighting of a completely different type.  On a world dominated by Clan Snow Raven for so long fighting had broken out on nearly every continent, in the air and in space.  At the jump point Clan Snow Raven’s last Kigamure-class Pursuit Cruiser, the Lum, was preparing to leave the system with a group of JumpShips carrying more of Clan Snow Raven’s population and infrastructure to their new home in the Raven Alliance.  Both Clan Steel Viper and Star Adder had taken issue with the Snow Raven’s continued retreat jumped their own naval assets into the system challenging the Snow Ravens to a Trial of Refusal over their obvious moves.  As Clan Snow Raven WarShips square off against WarShips from both the Vipers and Adders two Snow Raven JumpShips are caught between them carrying nearly six thousand civilians unable to withstand a single hit from WarShip grade weapons the two ships are torn to pieces in the crossfire.

In the past such a massive loss would likely have brought the Clans back from the abyss however today things had gone too far and the battle continued despite the loss of life.  In the end two Snow Raven vessels the Avalanche, a Dire Wolf-class Heavy Cruiser, and the Kerensky’s Hope, a Cameron-class Battle-cruiser, are both destroyed with four Steel Viper and two Star Adder vessels badly damaged.  Fortunately for the Snow Ravens the Lum and the remaining JumpShips jumped clear of the system escaping the carnage but the fighting was far from over with further Raven WarShips arriving and neither the Steel Vipers or Star Adders retreating.

The Starliner One the first ever civilized WarShip had entered and traveled slowly through the New Avalon system allowing the passengers to enjoy some of the facilities aboard the vessel in its leisurely cruise.  Civilians mainly from the Star League Protectorate but also all over the Inner Sphere were aboard, as the ship traveled through the system the FSS New Avalon, a Whirlwind Block II-class Destroyer and the FSS Sandhurst, an Artemis-class Diplomatic Escort Vessel, joined them acting as escort providing the Starliner One’s passengers with close up sights of the two massive WarShips.

Reaching orbit of New Avalon they were met by the FSS Audacity, one of the Federated Suns newest First Prince Block II-class Battleships.  Upgraded since the days of the refitted FSS Thunderchild the Audacity was the only operational vessel of its class, although two further ships were under construction or undergoing trials.  So far the vessel had not faced an active combat situation however it was a very impressive display for the incoming Starliner One and a clear message to everyone aboard that the Star League would not be lording over any nation despite their sale of a WarShip to civilian authorities.

Clan Occupation Zones
Jade Falcon/Hell’s Horses
20th July 3085

Clan Jade Falcon blood a group of new clusters counter attacking against Clan Hell’s Horses continued assaults against the Inner Sphere.  The Jade Falcon forces quickly retake Derf, Trell and Maxis Planet however on Romulus the Jade Falcons resort to orbital fire support from a vessel known as the Night Talon.  This craft an upgraded Nightlord-class Battleship wiped out three clusters of Hell’s Horses ground troops along with nearly five thousand civilians on the planet’s surface in the bombardment that continues for nearly two hours.  Accusations fly around the Clan Occupation Zones in reaction to the Jade Falcon’s use of naval assets against ground bound troops.  Within Clan Jade Falcon the reactions of the warrior Caste begins to cause problems for Khan Marthe Pryde.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Into August 2 Halves for this one

Throne Room
Tikonov, Crucis March
Federated Suns
3rd August 3085

Flanked by officers of the First Davion Guards RCT Marshal Dayton Duvall marched into the Throne Room of Tikonov.  Standing near the chair was Field Marshal Paul Bowman and several of his advisers.  Marching to the centre of the room the three officers stooped and snapped to a salute Paul came to attention ahead of them marching their pose returning their salute “Sir, Marshal Dayton Duvall, The Strength of Alexander is at your service.”  She said stepping to one side “Admiral Tabitha Steiner, commander of our Aerospace Regiment, and Captain Burton Davion.”

â€œWelcome to Tikonov Marshal Duvall, we hope to make your stay on Tikonov a worthwhile one.  Captain Davion, I am particularly glad to welcome you here, I believe the chair is yours Sire.”  He said turning to the throne, Burton’s official title was Duke of Tikonov he knew it was aimed as a direct insult from his father to the Capellan Confederation who still claimed Tikonov and the surrounding worlds.”

â€œAff” Burton replied his face immediately reddening he had been with Clan Nova Cat for the last year and picked up several of their words “I am aware Field Marshal, but I am an officer of the Davion Guards first, the work you have done on this world has been admirable, I would not want to diminish that.”  He replied politely refusing the chair, Marshal Duvall smiled impressed by his officer’s choice and decision.

â€œAs you wish sire” Paul replied “Marshal Duvall, once your Regimental Combat Team is settled perhaps you and your officers would like to dine with me and the officers of the Tikonov Cossacks?  An opportunity to meet the men and women you will be working with during your stay here?”

â€œThat sounds like a good idea Field Marshal, until then we will take our leave” Duvall replied snapping off another salute which Admiral Steiner and Captain Davion followed.  Paul saluted all three before the three officers turned and marched from the room.

â€œThe future of our nation” Paul said quietly from behind the throne a uniformed figure appeared his on off aide Marshal Galen Cox.  “You think he will be ready when the time comes?”

â€œThe First Prince believes it is up to the Federated Suns to make sure he is you, me and everone else in between we are all to be part of his preparation.”

â€œGalen, do you ever give straight answers nowadays?”  Paul asked despite reverting from the persona of Jerrard Cranston Galen still acted more the personal aide of the First Prince than a true Field Marshal of the Federated Suns, remaining in the shadows more than in public even in his appointment as adviser to Paul Bowman's taking over as Tikonov Duke and Crucis March Field Marshal.

â€œIt has been a long time since things were black and white where real answers can be given.”  Galen answered “just ensure Burton is well cared for and things will be fine.

â€œI will treat him like he was my own flesh and blood” Paul said, considering his family history he was sure that was little encouragement for Galen but that was the way of the world “will I make you a place at this mean Galen?”

â€œNo, I am required on New Avalon, and Defiance, I will be back when I’m needed.”

â€œYou mean when you have more trouble to bring?”  Paul asked looking at the doors at the still retreating Davion Guards officers “Galen, no answer?”  He asked turning seeing the place where the Marshal had been standing was now empty “typical.”

Tikonov, Crucis March
Federated Suns
5th August 3085

It hadn’t taken the First Davion Guards long to settle in on Tikonov, although the world had long been a Capellan Confederation holding, it was a friendly enough place.  Burton without his name or title was a Captain pure and simple.  Once his Company had been settled he took some personal time and had gone for a walk into the nearby town dressed in a simple Davion Guards utility uniform, during his time with the Nova Cats this had been a common practice and virtually no-one had taken a single interest in him.  Tikonov was completely different first here in the Federated Suns he had a bodyguard unit that seemed to shadow him everywhere.  Second was the massive amounts of people who wanted to see or speak to him.  Honestly not wanting to upstage the local Tikonov leadership or speak out of turn which could cause issues for his father Burton had done what any solider behind enemy lines would do, escape-and-evade capture.

Diving down side streets Burton had quickly ditched his jacket in a dumpster and continued to move crossing over street after street.  After several minutes he became aware that he was being shadowed by someone, not knowing if this was his eagle-eyed bodyguard or some local trouble makers Burton pushed on until reaching a dead end.  Turning to retrace his steps he saw his shadows three men of Chinese decent with clear Triad tattoos on their face.  “I do not want trouble with you.”  He said clearly

â€œThe Davion Guardsman doesn't want trouble with us?  What do you think boys let him walk?”  One of the men sneered

â€˜Good’ Burton though ‘they don’t know who I am’ he looked at all three men carefully as one continued to speak about the oppression of House Davion on Tikonov.  He was sure he could take them in a fight even unarmed but that wasn't exactly his best option.  He could see the headlines now “Day Two on Tikonov and Davion is already beating down its people” it wouldn't matter that it was self-defence.  Instead Burton had other ideas launching himself forward he made a faint towards one of the men then dodged to the side and jumped into the air grabbing a half ladder.  Using his upper body strength he pulled himself up the ladder onto the side of the wall “I do not want trouble” he repeated beginning to climb, the men began throwing things up at Burton but their aim was as bad as their threats and he was safe.

Climbing onto a half roof Burton was surprised to find an access door open, still wary about a second attack he entered into the dark corridor carefully carefully.  “Nicely dealt with young prince” a female voice said from within, now he had someone who knew who he was to deal with, maybe going for a walk hadn't been his best plan.

â€œThank you” Burton said cautiously walking forward, the small corridor opened up into a far larger room with several BattleMechs encased entirely in glass.  Stepping out of the corridor onto a metal gantry Burton found the person who the voice belonged to or at least her well shaped rear.  “Sorry, but where am I?”  He asked carefully walking around her, her perfume was barely noticeable but her striking silver blue hair was immediately apparent as he stepped into the light.

â€œI am the curator of Tikonov’s best kept secret, the Earthwerks Museum” she said flamboyantly, he could tell she wasn't a Tikonov native but he had no idea where she was from.  Stepping up beside her he could see she was nowhere near the age her silver hair would have suggested instead she was around his age with striking icy-blue eyes.  Burton quietly wondered if she had any Steiner Blood in her.

â€œAn impressive secret” Burton said respectfully looking out he could see the BattleMechs clearly, most were in poor condition do doubt due to age and neglect but the closest four were in near pristine condition all were of the same design.  About nine metres tall they had a large cannon that ran the length of their right arm it looked like some sort of laser, while the torso was dominated by a large boxy missile rack which Burton guessed was a fifteen or twenty tube Long Range Missile system.  Further down the torso there were further launch tubes for what could only be Short Range Missiles and other ports for laser emitters.  Finally a set of machine guns dominated the right arm.  Searching the design for an idea of what it could be Burton noticed the off centre cockpit which was almost perched on the left shoulder instead of on the torso.  Thinking of only two such designs that had that particular design feature Burton grasped at the most logical one “is that an original Thunderbolt?”  He asked if it was the Mech would have been nearly six hundred years old!  It would have likely been worth more than half of the city.

â€œGood instincts, athletic and a quick mind, there is hope for you yet” she said “yes indeed the last one that I know of in existence.

   â€œIt must be worth…”

â€œMore than you can imagine but its place is here on Tikonov, it should be on display for all to see, unfortunately without the resources or funding to move it the people will probably never see it.  The best I can do is keep this building with power and lights, and keep a little hope in my heart that one of these days the support will come to help.”  She said not once taking her eyes off the Thunderbolt “but you young sire did not come here for a tale of a lost BattleMech in glass.  Don’t worry I can get you away from the crowds and back to your base in one piece.”  She said looking at him fully, she was a very beautiful woman; Burton remained silent watching his tongue. “Come with me” she said turning she walked along the gantry down some steps.  Burton followed behind her by several steps carefully watching he wasn't being led into another Triad trap.  Fortunately or unfortunately it was another trap but this time it was a friendly one.  Around one of the corners three of Burton’s bodyguards stood.  “Gentlemen, I think this is your lost Prince.”  She said with a small giggle.

â€œThank you Lady…” the bodyguard started but noticed a small shake of her head, she intended on keeping her identity a secret a little longer.  “We will take care of him from here, sire Tikonov can be a dangerous place.”

â€œAff” Burton replied immediately then realized he had used the Clan reply.  Too long within the Nova Cats as an ambassador “I noticed that” Burton said moving past his mistake neither the bodyguard nor the woman made any notice of it. “Milady I thank you for your assistance” he’d noticed her shaking her head and decided that right now wasn't the needed time to ask questions.  “I hope things go well for your Mechs and to see you again sometime” he said leaving the room with the bodyguards.

â€œThank you my Prince, I’m sure we’ll see each other again” she whispered watching him leave.

Welcome party
Ryan-Bowman Residence, Tikonov
Crucis March, Federated Suns
5th August 3085

That very night Burton and other members of the First Davion Guards had been invited to a get together at the Ryan-Bowman residence.  Burton was the lowest rank present but his name had gotten him an invite the Ryan-Bowmans wouldn't have the heir to the throne not at their welcome party.  Standing near the back of the Davion Guards group Marshal Dvall true to his officer “please remember you represent the Davion Guards, House Davion and me so no screw ups.”  He ordered “Tikonov still has some leanings towards the Capellan Confederation even with the Bowmans back in charge so be careful and don’t take offence if someone says something out of turn.  We are the professionals, I expect you all to act like it.”  He warned his men and women most nodded or replied with a crisp “yes sir.”  Standing at the back Burton thought they were lucky, they would be able to blend into the background, speak with the Tikonov Militia or Cossacks officers he was going to be stuck with Marshal Duvall and the Bowmans as their personal guest.  “Davion, what are you still standing around for?”  Duvall asked seeing the other officers break up and mingle with the other guests “I said mingle, I meant it.”  He ordered smiling turning around walking off

â€œAye sir” Burton said quietly walking off he made his way to food table, most people recognized him immediately there were bows, curt-says and salutes all the way to the table.  Burton was glad to reach it and concentrate on something other than appearances.  He grabbed a small place and some food for politeness along with a drink of the house punch before moving off to the side to watch the room.  Marshal Dayton Duvall, Duke Bowman and two Tikonov Cossacks officers were locked in deep conversation near the main stage, other officers were mingling with the local nobility and officers freely, Burton was all alone.  He had only recently joined the Davion Guards, after his extended spell in the Nova Cat’s Den with the Defiance Training Battalion; he didn't know many of the officers or even his commander very well.

â€œAll alone at the ball” a familiar female voice asked from behind turning slowly Burton was surprised to find the same woman he had met this afternoon standing there dressed in a shoulder less silver/gold dress her hair was different from earlier gone was the silver colouring it was now a magnificent red, she wore far more make-up than she had earlier her red lips looked even brighter with her hair, but the eyes those beautiful icy-blue eyes.

â€œEveryone knows someone but me.” Burton replied smirking sadly it was the truth despite the humour in his voice.

â€œBut you must know things about these people?  They are after all yours to command with a simple work.”  She said moving beside him “I’m sure you could have any woman, or any man, in this room with a single word.”  She said smiling not looking directly at him but at other people.

â€œWomen are enough trouble” Burton replied answering her unasked question “and I’m sure my name would get me in the door but I couldn't command anyone to do anything.  Other than the title my father ensured that I am but a Captain, at least for now.”  She giggled infectiously

â€œMy Prince” she said in a low voice “trust me when I saw, your name may open a door but you wouldn't need to command anyone to do anything for you with the right words.”  She said so only he could hear.

â€œIf only I knew the right words” Burton said weakly, the woman responded with a loud laugh bringing looks from all around Burton could feel her arm on his.  “What’s so funny?”

â€œYou just told me a very funny joke” she said continuing to smile playfully “and now we are going to dance across this room and out that door.” She said nodding her head towards an exit Burton lowered his plate and drink to the table “I hope you dance?”

â€œI’m a little out of practice but, I’m a Davion, I’ll adapt.”  He said offering his arm which she took gracefully all around the crowd began to part as the made their way to the centre of the floor.

Across the room Duke Paul Ryan-Bowman and Marshal Dayton Duvall watched as the two danced gracefully around the room.  Burton Davion was no slouch on the dance floor a product of his upbringing within a royal household.  “Captain Davion finally making an impression” Duvall said quietly, Victor Steiner-Davion had told him to treat Burton like any other junior officer so he rarely used his titles when addressing Burton.  The young Captain seemed to enjoy the freedom he had been given and quite rightly so, soon enough he would never have a day to himself.  Duvall noticed Bowman was watching the couple dance carefully “you know her Duke Bowman?”

â€œYou could say that, Marshal, she’s my cousin” he said Duvall chuckled out of relief, firstly Burton Davion’s first true event at a meeting and everyone can see he’s at ease, secondly he didn't have the family issues to worry about that Bowman obviously would have.  The pair of youngsters continued to dance around the room, as the music came to a close they disappeared from the room past a pair of guards in ceremonial gear.

â€œI can have him recalled to base Duke Bowman?”

â€œNo let them have their peace, she has had enough to deal with recently, she’s a smart girl she won’t get into too much trouble.”  Bowman said turning back to the other guests.  Other dancers had followed the couples lead and began to dance around the room while other officers were clustered around Bowman and Duvall.

â€œHopefully he is smart.”  Duvall said quietly now feeling the worried one

Outside the air was warm; Tikonov was in its summer season although for a world that barely had a winter season it didn’t make much difference.  His partner pulled Burton to the banister looking out over the capital city of Tikonov.  Lights from the houses and the streets lighting up everything for the world to see “for someone who is out of practice you dance very well.”  She said smiling leaning over the banister her arms crossed against it.

â€œI’m a Davion, I do everything well.”  Burton said joining her

â€œYou say that a lot young prince, as if you are trying to convince yourself of your abilities?”  She said quietly

â€œPerhaps I am.”  Burton said breathing deeply “by the time my father was my age now he had fought against Clan Jade Falcon and survived.  He was in line to leading the greatest nation the Inner Sphere has seen since the fall of the Star League.  He brought the entire Inner Sphere together to defeat the Clans, saved his nation from a devastating Civil War.  And now he is possibly the most stable and secure of all the Succession Lords, perhaps on his way to being the greatest First Prince the Federated Suns has seen since Alexander himself.”  Burton stressed what his father had done and what he could do.

â€œAnd you quietly wonder what Burton can do?  What is there left for Burton to take care of?  How can he prove his worth?”  She said smiling “the pressures of parenthood.  We can only do what we are capable of doing as Paul would say, the pressures other put onto you are their expectations your own expectations are what is important.  Live your own life.”

   â€œSounds like someone who knows?”

â€œPerhaps not as badly as you do, my prince, but I know very well the pressures of a demanding parent.  Which is why I am here and not on Achernar, I would rather be with friends and relatives than home with parents for my vacation, this is a time for relaxation and fun.”  Burton nodded he’d noticed her accent before but couldn't place it.  “Well fun for me at least, you get to enjoy some work.”

â€œWork, training more like, I will at least know how to keep paperwork in order by the time I leave Tikonov.”  Burton said slightly annoyed Tikonov may have Capellan sympathies but it wasn't as if this was a front-line battle post, if ever one of these appeared he was sure he was be far from it.  “So how does a non-Tikonov native become involved in protecting a museum for Earthwerks? A corporation that is still quite active on Tikonov.”  She laughed at his question

â€œWell that’s one of the fun things about this world, and this family you have been invited to meet, there are ways to get involved in many things.  I became involved in that little project because of Paul’s niece Svetlana; she loves to play and loves to find things that others have missed.  She sees that museum as a key to the lock that is Earthwerks.  If she can keep it from prying eyes she hopes to use it as a bargaining chip in future negotiations for production.”

â€œThere are plenty Thunderbolts running around.”

â€œNot only Thunderbolts are on the table” she said smiling broadly Burton didn't even try to follow her meaning business was one thing he planned to stay far from.

â€œSo what do you do?  You said this was your vacation spot, Quiaff?” Burton asked not even realizing what he had said until the word had left his mouth.  Immediately he felt heat forming on his cheeks.

â€œQuiaff?” What is that?  I know enough Russian to know its not that.”

â€œIt’s a clan word, it means ‘you agree’ or ‘your answer is yes’ I’m sorry after spend a year with them you pick up little things.”  He tried to explain, to someone who hadn't spent time with the Clans it was probably a difficult thing to understand.

â€œWell I do agree” she said smiling “I’m on a break from DropShip training I was at Kathil Shipyards on a training exercise before that at the Warrior’s Hall on New Syrtis.  For now a DropShip tomorrow a WarShip” she joked.

â€œWe all have our dreams” Burton said quietly “and if an up and coming Prince was looking for a pilot who would I look for?”

â€œWell, my prince" she said using the title sarcastically, if you were looking for a pilot you’d probably want a transport DropShip.  The ships I want to fly don’t really have space for your Mech but if you wanted me it’s Leftenant Pamela Marie Achernar.”  She said throwing him a quick salute; she was out of uniform so there was no real need for formality.

â€œI’ll have to keep an eye out.”

â€œAnd if I get transferred to transport duty I’ll know who to blame.”  She said half jokingly.  The two spent the next couple of hours attached at the hip first on the balcony before returning to the party where they danced and spoke to important Tikonov locals throughout the night.  By the next morning the two were the talk of the world as people linked the two romantically despite no real evidence of the sort.

Star League Protectorate
8th August 3085

Looking over the thirty-four identical BattleMechs assembled in front of him General Peter McGillaray smiled.  His unit the First Royal ComGuard Regiment would maybe get two of the Mechs if he was lucky.  Built on a heavy chassis with all energy weapons the PRF-1 Prefect was the prefect patrol and raiding Mech, built on Irian for the SLDF the Battalion was short two Mechs with McGillary planned to find out where they were “Miss Burgess I’d like to know where your final two Mechs are?”

â€œSorry General, the last two showed problems during the last phase of testing.  The engineers promise that future batches will be the full Battalion in strength.”  Olivia Burgess the Irian Corporation representative explained.

â€œAnd the last two Mechs of this Battalion, will we ever receive them?”

â€œThat I cannot answer General, but what I can say is that if you do not receive them you will not be charged.”

â€œI would hope not Miss Burgess; the Star League went to much expense going to your Corporation instead of securing manufacturing within the Star League.”  McGillaray reminded her.

â€œSo you have reminded me several times General, but I believe most of your production facilities already have orders that will keep you busy for the next ten years.  Irian is the most capable of the large production firms capable of satisfying this order; all the other member states of the Inner Sphere are working on their own Armed Forces.  Irian on the other hand is a private corporation that the Marik Commonwealth cannot overtax.”

â€œSend us the BattleMechs to the quantity we require and there will be no trouble.”  McGillaray warned looking over the assembled Mechs once more, even two Mechs down they were a formidable force to reinforce the SLDF.

Muster Hall
AFFS Training Base, Defiance
Crucis March, Federated Suns
16th August 3085

The room was abuzz as members of the First Defiance Training Battalion mustered as ordered in the Hall on Defiance.  It had been over a year since they were in this together after being assigned to Prince Burton Davion during his time within the Nova Cat’s Den as an ambassador. Now they nerviously waited to find out what the results of their mission had been.  Normally a Training Battalion could last as long as three years however after a year out of the Federated Suns many of them were ready for some R&R none had taken any leave and had a year of wages to spend.  The commander of the unit Colonel Drake McMillian entered the room wearing a standard AFFS duty uniform.

“ATTEN-SION!” someone called out and everyone saluted their commander.  He had commanded them throughout their time in the Nova Cat’s Den despite the lofty position Burton Davion had held as Prince and Ambassador to the Clansmen who occupied the pirate state.

â€œAt ease!” The Colonel called out so all could hear looking along the lines of warriors in front of him.  Thirty-eight MechWarriors and seventeen techs in the room stood waiting for his next words “Ladies and Gentlemen, in this hand I hold a letter from the Marshal of Armies Reinhart Steiner.”  He said raising his left arm “in this hand I hold a letter from Captain Burton Davion, of the First Davion Guards RCT, our trip was good for some?”  He said smirking everyone had known Burton would move on from the training Battalion to greater things, the First Davion Guards was the perfect unit for the heir to the Federated Suns.  “I will read the words of Prince Davion first” he said unraveling the piece of paper. “To the members of the First Defiance Training Battalion, it was an honour to serve with you on a mission important to the future of the Federated Suns and I am proud to call you my friends.”  McMillian started “you all exemplified the attitude and dedication to the Federated Suns and its First Prince that makes our nation truly great.  I thank you and look forward to watching your careers move from strength-to-strength.  Sincerely Captain Burton Davion” McMillian finished looking up “high praise from our Prince” he declared “and you deserve it, he is not the only one who is truly proud of this unit’s actions during its time within Clan territory.  You all preformed very admirably.”  He said raising the second piece of paper unfolding it “this is perhaps a more important notice” he said pausing smiling broadly “From Marshal of Armies Reinhart Steiner to the MechWarriors and Technicians of the First Defiance Training Battalion from reading reports filed by you, your commanding officer and by Prince Burton Davion I want to congratulate you all for your performances within the Nova Cat’s Den.  The Training Battalion concept was one created by Hanse Davion, The Fox’s personal project; you have proven that his belief in warriors who have fought their way into the AFFS was the correct one.  I hear-by grant promotion of a single grade in rank and pay to all members of the First Defiance Training Battalion and grant you the assignment of your choice, after returning from you extended personal leave.  Regards Reinhart Steiner” McMillian finished looking up at the beaming faces of his unit Drake McMillian felt very proud his eyes moist with un-shed tears.  “So ladies and gentlemen, I’ll give you one last order.  Dis-missed!”  He ordered the entire Battaion erupted into cheers, hugs and back slaps they would probably never come across as close a nit unit again but this was their time to enjoy.  Their actions had gotten them their rewards and McMillian was very proud he knew that when he returned to duty he would have different cadets to command and likely new staff, only his Senior Tech and Senior NCO would stay the rest would change and it would all start again.  But for now he allowed himself to enjoy the moment and what they had achieved.

Rim Association
Former Free Worlds League
21st August 3085

With the former Nova Cat Clansmen, the Liger Warriors settled into their new home the Periphery Free Worlds League nation begins looking at the independent worlds around it with envious eyes.  Forming strike teams the Rim Association chooses to act on its desires with mostly formed around a single Liger Warriors detachment supported by conventional militia and infantry forces drawn from the Rim Association’s home built forces.

Within the space of a week four worlds formerly independent members of the Free Worlds League cut off when the central government fell come under the management of the Rim Association.  In a series of raids in force the Rim Association Strike Teams land on and secure government buildings on Romita, Goth Khakar, Corbeanka and Prato.  Although the worlds do not see any major changes in their citizens lives the worlds do pay a tax to the government of the Rim Association and their defence forces fall under the Rim Association Armed Forces Command.  For the most part these worlds don’t resist openly against the Rim Association’s arrival although there is some peaceful protests on Goth Khakar which pass without incident.

Trial of Position
New Barcella, Nova Cat’s Den
Periphery
3rd September 3085

The final salvo flew and the targeted Mech fell to the ground confirming Sonja Nova Cat as a Star Captain within Clan Nova Cat once more.  There should have been no reason for a Trial but because of her time away from the Clan held in enemy hands without a chance to keep her skills current she had been challenged by several warriors on her return to the Nova Cat’s Den.  After a period of recovery Sonja had agreed to retake her Trial of Position which she had just won and been confirmed once more as a Clan warrior.  Inside herself Sonja was proud to once more be a warrior of the Nova Cats she knew her father, her Khan, would feel the same despite not being present but she also knew her heart belonged doing something else.

Independent World
Tapachulo, Former Free Worlds League

Given the recent aggressiveness of the Rim Association’s recent aggressiveness there was widespread fear on independent worlds of the former Free Worlds League.  On the small barely inhabited world of Tapachulo near the Regulan Fiefs they were less worried their planet was far from the Rim Association and other than a small mining operation they had little to offer anyone.
It was for that reason alone that everyone was surprised when the world found itself under attack from space in the form of a series of massive explosions that landed within one hundred kilometres of the planet’s main settlement in nearly a perfect circle.  No-one was hurt and other than a few new craters on the planet’s surface there was little changed for the inhabitants but fear is a greater motivator to change as a result within a week of the “attack” the world petitions to join the Regulan Feifs despite the additional taxes it will cost them.

For the Regulans it is one more world to add to their territory and a successful trial run of their new Regulus-class Frigates Gibson and Clipperton.  Fitted with spinal mounted light mass drivers the two vessels had jumped into the Tapachulo system and launched kinetic weapons at the planet’s surface intentionally not looking to cause damage.  The Regulus-class was designed around the mass driver and to be a weapon of fear as well as power and pride for the Regulan Feifs, the first mission for the two vessels is classified at the highest levels on Regulus.

Draconis Combine Embassy

16th September 3085

Entering the Embassy Duke Kitsune Kurita felt like like he had been transported back to the Draconis Combine everything of the Embassy’s main entrance chamber reminded him of home.  It suited him just well Japan was the ancestral home of the Kurita family; he was perhaps closer to his routes here than he had ever been.  Given his dual Kurita-Davion heritage here was a better place for him than out in the Inner Sphere where people would likely try to make him a pawn in political games.  Instead he would remain here as the Draconis Combine’s Ambassador to the Star League Defence Force, he would serve his nation from afar without causing any issue or trouble for them.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Draconis Combine staging area
Yamarovka, Irece Prefecture
Pesht Military District, Draconis Combine
22nd September 3085

Yamarovka was a backwater world of the Draconis Combine, there was little to call out about the world except that it was on the Draconis Combine/Clan Ghost Bear border and it was close to the Sea Fox holds on Itabiana.  It was also quite close to the ruined former capital of Luthien, as a result Coordinator Vincent Kurita had chosen to come here during his tour of the Ghost Bear border.

â€œWe have done much to improve security and our response to defend this planet.”  The commander of the First Ghost Regiment said as they walked around the base.  Suddenly there were sirens all around and a pair of Ryoken KU OmniMechs charged past accelerating as they moved.  The OmniMech was a recent addition to Luthien Armour Works production lines based on the the Clan Ryoken but built with Inner Sphere technology.  “Sire we need to get you to bunker”

Entering the underground command bunker Vincent Kurita was led to the main room which was dominated by a large map table showing two fast moving red icons towards a small cluster of blue icons.  “What is it?”  The Coordinator asked looking at the map.

â€œAn unauthorized DropShip landing in Sector Seventy-three, sire, MechWarriors Tami Moto and Christina Cross are attending to investigate.”  Naming the pilots of the two Mechs that had ran past the Coordinator, two female MechWarriors surprised female warriors were more common in the Combine’s regiments now than in the past but still two to the same duty, Vincent then he remembered this was one of the Ghost Regiments nothing common about it.

â€œYou get landings such as this often?” Vincent asked

â€œSometimes it’s the Clans other times its… elements we do not like to advertise their movements.”  The commander said carefully he knew more about what he was saying but Vincent chose not to push it further.  The Ghost Regiments had been created from the Draconis Combine’s criminal underworld by his grandfather, for the last half century they had served the DCMS with distinction and shown their loyalty, but despite the loyalty shown they still held some links to their criminal underground origin.  “We haven’t detected any Clan presence so that only leaves the other.”

â€œRanger One to base, we have a group of Buffalo hover trucks unloading cargo from a Buccaneer-class DropShip.”  One of the MechWarriors reported Vincent could hear she was breathing heavily likely moving her Mech quickly.  “No weapons present, Ranger Two is closing on targets.  We are identifying as Ghost Regiment units…” she reported Vincent watched as one of the Mechs closed on the DropShip.

â€œBase, Ranger Two, surrender message from the DropShip.  Moving to secure, we’re going to need some infantry to secure prisoners.”  The other pilot said as one of the icons on the map moved forward.

â€œRanger Two from base, we have two APC en route, eta six minutes…”  The controller reported but was broken off as four of the blue icons accelerated away from the DropShip.

â€œRanger One to base, we have four runners heading for the base in pursuit.  Ranger Two, secure that DropShip and both remaining Buffalos!”

â€œConfirmed” the other pilot said as Ranger One accelerated after the four hovercraft that were heading directly for the base.

â€œThere after me” Vincent said quietly, he knew each Buffalo could carry about fifteen to twenty tons of cargo or several infantry platoons of infantry.  Someone was looking to eliminate the Coordinator of the Draconis Combine.

â€œWe should be secure here sire, and we have their DropShip we can track them down” the commander said quietly Vincent nodded but first they had to eliminate the four Buffalos speeding towards the base.  One of the blue icons representing the Buffalos suddenly disappeared.

â€œRange One, one target down, these guys are not making any evasive moves I’m not sure if there is anyone even on them.”  Tami Moto reported as her Ryoken chased down the remaining three Buffalos.  Behind her position there was suddenly a massive explosion throwing rocks into the air “massive explosion Ranger Two’s position, Ranger Two report!”  She shouted as the Ryoken continued to chase down the remaining hovercraft.  “Ranger Two” she called as the icon representing Ranger Two disappeared from the map “Ranger Two!”  Tami Moto screamed but still no response as she targeted and destroyed the second Buffalo.

â€œBase to Range One, Ranger Two and DropShip are both off scope, observers from base believe a sub-nuclear detonation.”  The controller said at least the detonation was not on a nuclear scale.

“Understood” the pilot replied continuing her pursuit of the remaining two vehicles they were now within six kilometres of the base and closing rapidly.

â€œTai-sa, the Mechbay doors have been locked closed we cannot deploy any further forces!”  One of the other technicians reported the First Ghost Regiment’s commander rushed out of the room.

â€œCan this facility withstand that kind of blast?”

       â€œUnlikely”

â€œThen I think I will go somewhere with a view, thank you for your service to your people and your nation.”  He said heading up to the main deck of the control tower looking across past the perimeter towards where the DropShip had landed.  He could see what was left of the explosion and smoke from the fires being thrown into the air.  Across the bases courtyard Vincent could see engineers trying to open the Mechbay doors, two of the Mechs were trying to pull the massive doors open from the inside.  Even from his position Vincent knew it would be all over before the remaining two Buffalos arrived.  There was another explosion as Tami Moto eliminated one more of the remaining hovercraft.  Vincent looked up and could see the last of the hovercraft now moving at high speed towards the base, the machine guns and short range missiles mounted in the towers around the base were trying to track the last vehicle but there were having no luck.  The Ryoken of Ranger One appeared a small distance behind the hovercraft there was no guarantee she would catch the speeding vehicle.  Weapons fire from the towers finally found the Buffalo and began to tear into the hovercraft’s lightly armoured hide but at the speed it was moving there was little chance of them stopping the vehicle now its kinetic energy would carry it into the command tower.

As the hovercraft continued to close Vincent looked to the sky “Uncle it will be your time again.”  He whispered to his Uncle Minoru Kurtia, if Vincent fell the Warlord of Pesht would be the logical choice.  Suddenly the Ryoken of Ranger One appeared leaping through the air on jump jets the speeds involved were something to behold as the fifty-five ton Mech flew through the air smashing into one hundred ton hovercraft.  One foot of the OmniMech went straight through the roof of the lightly armoured hovercraft as the rest of the Mech came crashing down on the craft one of the Ryoken’s lasers fired tearing through the driving compartment of the hovercraft.
Everything happened quickly as ammunition stored aboard the Mech or aboard the hovercraft cooked off and exploded the two intertwined vehicles flew through the air smashing into the ground several times before coming to rest less than three hundred metres from Vincent’s position. “But not today” he whispered to the air before turning on his bodyguards “get a medical team to that Mech, I want that pilot saved!”  He shouted two of the four bodyguards ran off to assemble the teams as Vincent turned back to the downed OmniMech and mangled vehicle, someone had tried to kill him today, they had killed at least one MechWarrior, they would pay the price for their actions.

Intensive Care Unit, Military Medical Facility
Yamarovka, Irece Prefecture
Pesht Military District, Draconis Combine
29th September 3085

There was pain to her left from her shoulder to her foot but at least she felt something, which was more than she had expected before launching her OmniMech into the air.  Tami Moto opened her eyes slowly and was immediately aware of being in a room with white walls and there being someone sitting in the chair beside the bed.  From what Tami could make out he was a very young man probably younger than her own twenty-two years, he wore a military uniform of the DCMS but with no medals or any rank insignia. “Welcome back to the land of the living MechWarrior.”

â€œI succeeded?” She whispered, her lips were dry as the words struggled out.  The man reached for a small glass and gently tipped water into her mouth.

â€œYou did, I thank you” he said his voice was reassuring despite his young age.

   â€œDid the Coordinator survive?”

â€œYes he did" the individual said before pausing Tami couldn't quite focus on him "he is very grateful" he continued "it appears to be the Black Dragons they have returned to scourge our worlds.”

   â€œWhat about MechWarrior Cross?”

â€œShe unfortunately died in the blast that destroyed the DropShip and consumed her OmniMech.”  He said continuing “MechWarrior you paid a great price…”

â€œThe Mech is replaceable I’m sure LAW has already built several more since I was unconscious.”  She said not understanding, she did her duty there was nothing else for it.

â€œNot just that…” he said quietly looking down she followed his gaze and saw where he was looking her lower arm and hand on her left side were completely missing and the whole limb was wrapped extensively.  “Unfortunately the damage was too severe for it to be saved.”  He continued but Tami felt numb, being a MechWarrior had got her out of the gang life, now what was she.  “The Coordinator has arranged for you to be flown to a medical facility on Dieron, there you will receive more extensive treatment.  From what the doctors say your nerve endings were not badly damaged you should be able to take an artificial limb.  With the correct treatment and physio-therapy you should be able to pilot a Mech again.”  He explained

â€œI’ll never be able to afford such things, the transport to Dieron alone would cost more than I make in a year?”

â€œI can guarantee, every price incurred will be paid for by House Kurtia, you will receive the best care possible.  I promise you that.”  He said very sure of the Coordinator’s intentions “now you must rest, do not worry, everything will be taken care of.”  He said rising from his chair leaving the room, Tami looked at her arm then looked away disgusted by what she saw, she had donw her duty which was all that mattered.

First Annual Race of Noisiel
Southern Continent, Noisiel
Alarion Province, Lyran Commonwealth
3rd October 3085

On screens broadcast across Noisel Duke Michael Alextep spoke at the beginning of the first ever BattleMech Race of Noisiel.  “Ladies and Gentlemen be prepared for a grand display of piloting skill and weapons marksmanship.  There are twelve competitors within this race each commanding the power of an Assault BattleMech.  Their goal is to reach the finish line before all others, but they will have to contend with the boiling plains” he said as a camera panned over a desolate region “the Triplet Rivers of Noisiel” the camera image now changed to show three rapidly moving rivers converging into a larger more potent river “and the specially built towns of Alextep Major and Alextep Minor” he announced the cameras showing dozens of buildings arranged in the pattern of two disorganized towns, these buildings were not real homes or businesses instead built for the crowds enjoyment.  “Like the games of Solaris there is one obstacle they will all have to face every step of the way – Each other – none of the weapons of these games have been disabled everyone is able to attack each other but warriors be warned if you decide to remain here and fight very soon your last obstacle will arrive” The Duke said as from behind him on the camera two massive hulking Battle Armour suits walked into camera shot “Allow me to introduce The Gorillas!”  He said both suits were the same painted black and grey they were both built like the massive Terran primates they were named after but both hands ended with Battle Claws capable of tearing apart BattleMech levels of armour while their mounted machine guns and anti-personnel weapons could worry warriors further.  The Duke had hired the Battle Armour Regiment known by the same name as their unique Battle Armour suit specifically to ensure the race did not turn into a standing battle, they were under orders to keep the battle moving forward towards the exit threatening the Mechs but only taking them out if they threatened the Battle Armour troopers directly.

On the starting line was twelve Assault BattleMechs from around the Inner Sphere over one thousand tons of armoured giants each Mech was about thirty metres apart.  Any military unit in the entire Inner Sphere would be overjoyed to have in their TO&E first was long time king of the assault class a recent model AS7-S2 Atlas, beside it was an eighty-five ton Black Watch OmniMech produced on Northwind, next a Combine built Mauler, then a Liao built Emperor which was followed by a pair of Lyran built Mechs a one hundred ton Fafnir and a ninety-five ton Hauptmann OmniMech.  Next was a Word of Blake era Grand Crusader followed by a Star League manufactured ninety-five ton Highlander BattleMech.  Beside the Grand Crusader was a trio of Federated Suns designs an eighty-five ton Hanse BattleMech, a ninty-five ton Sagittaire and an eighty-five ton Templar OmniMech.  Finally there was an eighty-five ton Zeus an assault Mech that was as Lyran as any other in the world.

â€œLadies and gentlemen you all do the Alextep family honour by your attendance today.  I wish you all the best of luck” Duke Alextep said into the communications circuit.  Raising his hand to the control switch he changed the controls and pressed the fire button.  All around the starting line fireworks went off signifying the start of the race.  Almost immediately the Highlander turned on the Grand Crusader and fired a salvo of medium pulse laser and short range missile fire into the Mech.  The Templar, Hanse and Zeus all accelerated quickly ahead of the others using their superior speed to gain an advantage straight away, a double Heavy Gauss Rifle from the stationary Fafnir tore apart the Hanse blowing through the rear armour of the eighty-five ton BattleMech.  Immediately the Mech fell forward smashing into the ground face first down and probably out.

Leaping into the air and to the right the Highlander began to make some distance between the others with the damaged Grand Crusader trying to follow it.  The Sagittaire appeared to completely disappear as it activated its Void Signature System, the adaptive armour system mimicking the surroundings behind it.  The Atlas completely ignoring all others charged forward trying to escape the bloodbath of the beginning quickly the Mech was caught by the Zeus which engaged it with LRM and laser fire, the larger Mech shrugging off most of the damage from the weapons fire.

Still standing where it had started the Fafnir twisted its torso like a standing turret and fired two more Heavy Gauss Rifle slugs into its new target this time the already damaged Grand Crusader.  The other one hundred ton Mech chasing down the still jumping Highlander took one slug in the arm but the second went high and missed.  Turning the BattleMech the Fafnir pilot lined up two more shots ready to make the killing blow unfortunately the pilot was not paying attention to the group of Battle Armour that had joined the race.  Four Gorilla suits swarmed the Fafnir causing the pilot far more trouble than the other BattleMechs.  Elsewhere a squad of Elemental Battle Armour suits had reached the downed Hanse and secured the downed assault BattleMech.

Far ahead of these actions the Highlander, Templar, Atlas, Hauptmann, Zeus, Black Watch and Sagittaire had reached the Triplet Rivers.  The three Jump Jet equipped Mechs, the Highlander, Templar and Sagittaire, all launched into the air crossing the first river as the Atlas, Hauptmann, Black Watch and Zeus waded into the water.  Seeing that their opponents were gaining ground on them the Black Watch raised its arm and fired its arm mounted assault Ultra Autocannon into the side of the Hauptmann.  At the same time the pilot made a physical attack with its arm mounted retractable blade crashing down on the Zeus severing one of the Mech’s arms.
This brief combat had slowed the leaders slightly the Emperor, Mauler and Grand Crusader all reached the water.  The Emperor was a jump jet equipped Mech launching into the air while the Grand Crusader waded into the water firing weapons at the other engaged Mechs.  The Mauler stood on the edge of the water firing autocannon and particle cannon fire into its opponents targeting first the Black Watch and then the Hauptmann.  The two other pilots partially submerged by water were harder to hit but the Mauler was still an easy target.  Both Black Watch and Hauptmann pilots turned on the Mauler with autocannon, gauss rifle and plasma rifle fire, the massive amount of fire on one target was too much even for the Mauler pilot to handle.  Staggering backwards the Mech fell to the ground disabled at least for now.

Up ahead the initial jumping group of Mechs continued to pull out a lead over the others crossing the third river they all broke into a run.  So far all three had avoided firing at each other keeping this as a clean race.  In the middle river the Grand Crusader and Emperor pilots engaged in a titanic dual as one pilot crossed the others path.  The lighter Emperor coming off worse than the larger Word of Blake design as the two pilots seemed to forget they were in a race.

Pulling his Mech back to its feet the Mauler pilot began to wade into the water chasing the other Mechs it had fallen behind the others by a fair margin.  As the Mech reached the bottom of the river Battle Armour troopers of the Gorillas swarmed the Mauler, the Mech pilot obviously not experienced to Battle Armour attacks panicked and ejected from his Mech reducing the active Mechs to nine.

The field started to spread out a bit as the jump jet equipped Mechs who had led from the start reached the forested area.  The Atlas, Hauptman and Zeus waded out of the water followed by the Black Watch.  Finally the Emperor and Grand Crusader exited the water still fighting their own battle.  Around them Battle Armour suits caught up with the two dueling Mechs and swarmed them both bringing down two more of the racers.  The Highlander, Sagittaire and Templar began to wade through the trees smashing their way clear using their jump jets to clear some of the smaller trees but for the most part they were restricted to the ground allowing the chasing pack to catch up with them firing weapons as they arrived.

Weapons being discharged in a forested area led to one thing as stray weapons fire smashed into the trees a small fire spawned many others as the entire forest began to burn.  Each of the Mechs turned their thoughts away from the race and their individual duels to survival as the fire raised the temperature around them rapidly.  Fire and heat were deadly enemies to hot running BattleMechs, with the fire spreading throughout the forested area there was a real danger none of the pilots would escape with their lives.

With a real danger of none of his competitors escaping the fire Duke Alextep deployed three Pion-Laurier Lama-Deux Firefighter VTOL aircraft.  Between them the three aircraft dumped nearly forty tons of fire retardant materials on the wooded area coating the Mechs and the trees obscuring almost the entire area in smoke as the fires continued to rage.  Staggering clear of the fire the Highlander followed by the Atlas, Templar and Zeus moved into the open and raced away from the forest.  Their armour burned and battered none of the pilots seemed interested in fighting instead they continued to run.  Behind them the Hauptmann, Black Watch and Sagittaire cleared the burning forests as the Pion-Laurier Lama-Deux Firefighter VTOL aircraft made a second run against the woods, coated in a second run of fire retardant materials the the Hauptmann pilot seemed to have lost all interest in racing instead shooting its Gauss rifle and missiles into the back of the Zeus knocking the lightest Mech of the leading group to the ground.  The Black Watch was barely operational its autocannon fused by the fire, it ammunition exploded gutting most of its left side only the OmniMech’s CASE had saved the Mech.  The Sagittaire Void Signature System burned out by the fire was still the most operational of the three charged forward chasing the leading pack.  As the Hauptmann pilot aimed a shot at the Sagittaire’s back the Mech was swarmed by Elemental Battle Armour forces from the Gorillas.  Behind the OmniMech the almost destroyed Black Watch OmniMech surrendered to a group of Gray Death Strike Battle Armour suits eliminating two more competitors to the race.

Ahead the leading Highlander, Templar and Atlas reached the urban grounds of Alextep Minor, the first of two mock towns.  Behind them the Zeus pilot had gotten his Mech back onto its feet and was chasing them down the pack while the last Mech, the Sagittaire, was labouring along behind.  Reaching the town the Atlas pilot employed the “brute force” approach slamming into the small buildings forcing its way through.  It was a spectacular display with no chance of civilian casualties but it was also very slow.  The Highlander used its jump jets to clear the first couple of buildings while the Templar pilot avoiding using its own jump jets dodged the buildings entering the streets.  All three Mechs engaged each other and the buildings with sporadic weapons fire but for the most part the pilots concentrated on the race.  Next into the town the Zeus tried to follow the path of the Atlas ahead of it instead ran straight into a Heavy Gauss Rifle slug and several laser blasts, the lighter eighty ton Zeus took a beating as it staggered into a building.  Last but not least the Sagittaire followed closely by six Battle Armour squads reached the town.  The MechWarrior tried to follow the Highlander’s path using its jump jets but one of the jets had been damaged by the fire causing it to miss-fire.  The Mech spiraled into a building smashing through the brick building losing an arm as it crashed to a rest.  As Battle Armour swarmed the ninety-five ton Mech the MechWarrior realized the game was up and surrendered before their Mech was totally destroyed.

The Templar blasted its way clear of the town using its assault autocannon as it continued to race.  The Atlas behind it smashed what was left of the last building in its own path of destruction as it also cleared the small mock up town.  Finally the half destroyed Zeus followed the other three Mechs clearing the town, the lightest of the three Mechs still racing fired its last functioning weapon a Defiance 1001 Extended Range Particle Cannon catching the Templar in the back staggering the Omnimech.  Surprisingly it was the Atlas, not the Templar, which turned and finished off the Zeus with a Heavy Gauss Rifle shot to the centre torso; the gauss slug penetrated the armour and smashed the fusion engine cradled below.  Containment failure followed the pilot’s ejection rapidly as the BattleMech’s beating heart consumed it in fire.

The remaining three Mechs staggered into Alextep Major the mocked up buildings were too large to be jumped over so all three Mechs were restricted to a ground race.  Darting through the criss-crossed streets the three Mechs engaged in combat as they dueled for position.  Because of damage taken from the fire and from the Zeus attack the Templar’s ground speed was restricted putting the lighter Mech at a disadvantage over the other two.  As they cleared the mock city’s last building they were lined up Highlander, Atlas and Templar.  Still fighting all three continued on the last leg of the race low on ammunition the three Mechs were restricted to their laser weapons putting the Atlas in the fore with its twin Extended Range Large Lasers.

Wanting a pure Mech race until the end Duke Alextep contacted Colonel Evilauthor, commander of the Gorillas, and ordered the mercenary commander to keep his Battle Armour troops within the Alextep Major settlement.  As the three MechWarriors pulled away from the mock city they approached the finish line in close formation all damaged too much to fire their weapons the Mechs just ran towards the end none able to out pace the other.

To screaming crowds the HGN-641-X-2 Highlander piloted by MechWarrior Renee Walker crosses the finish line just ahead of the Templar and Atlas which were engaged in a running fist battle until the end to claim second place.  With a successful race completed and a winner rewarded Duke Michael Alextep announces that next year he would repeat the event and announces that Colonel Evilauthor had agreed for his Gorilla Regiment to remain stationed on Noisiel as a security force to support the local militia, to help construction crews make the course even more interesting and as Guardians for the next years games.

Inspired by a Tactical Challenge posted by Evilauthor so it get's its own post.

Throne Room, Davion Palace
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
8th October 3085

Standing near his family’s throne dressed in the uniform of a Federated Suns Marshal of Armies First Prince Victor Ian Steiner Davion could not feel anything other than pride.  His father had always said “Pride comes before a fall, watch for it” but today it didn’t matter.  Marching into the room dressed in his own uniform was his first born son Burton Davion; the almost new Captain insignia clear for all to see as were the neat row of medals on his uniform.

Stopping short of the steps leading to the throne Burton snapped to a parade stance salute “Captain Burton Davion reporting as requested, sire!”  He said crisply as if there was an entire court stood watching him.  Burying his pride for a moment Victor came to his own parade stance straightening his legs and his back and returned the salute.

â€œWelcome to New Avalon Captain” Victor said “at ease” he ordered.  Burton relaxed slightly but remained standing at attention as if on parade review.  “How is your assignment on Tikonov?”

â€œInteresting” Burton replied crisply, so far he had exercised patrolled and drilled with and against the First Tikonov Cossacks RCT and they had proven to be his equal.  The First Davion Guards were overall showing they were better in many ways but the Cossacks had been very well trained.  Burton had also spent a near stupid amount of time with Countess Pamela Marie Achernar during his time there before being recalled to New Avalon, he also knew that since his recall Pamela had been recalled to her training on Kathil and he had no idea when they would see each other again.  He knew that his father would know all about both.

â€œWell I am sorry for taking you away from assignment.  This is not purely a social visit” Victor warned “during your time with Clan Nova Cat I believe you encountered some Snow Raven forces?”

â€œAff” Burton replied immediately feeling heat rise in his cheeks “I mean yes sir, I did.”  He said quickly correcting his mistake.

â€œThe Snow Raven’s have approached us with an offer.”  Victor said coming down the steps to the same level of his son.  Victor was actually slightly shorter than his son, for which the First Prince was quite happy.  Although it had never bothered Victor he knew there were dozens if not hundreds of jokes aimed at “the little prince” one thing he was glad his son would not have to endure.  “When they joined with the Outworlds Alliance the Snow Ravens took four Federated Suns worlds they have offered them back to our realm.”

â€œIn exchange for?”  Burton asked his father knowing from experience that the Clans gave away nothing for free.

â€œWell that is the question” Victor answered “they asked to speak with us privately travelling here secretly using civilian vessels, and they asked to speak with you.”

â€œMe… why, I haven’t had any dealings with the Snow Ravens I am surprised they even know my name.”

â€œWell let that be your first lesson, never be surprised about what your enemy knows.”  Victor said knowingly he’d been where his son was “perhaps the Snow Raven you encountered with the Nova Cats?”

â€œSterling” Burton said her name for the first time out loud in ages immediately her face came to mind.  “She was just a Colonel when we last me, what kind of sway would she have?”

â€œWell we are about to find out” Victor stated turning towards the left hand side door off the Throne Room Burton followed closely.  Into the East Wing of the Davion Palace they entered a small group of rooms where three members of the Snow Raven Clan stood in the centre there was a tall woman with long dark hair highlighted with a blonde streak at the front.  She looked far different from the last time Burton had seen her he also noticed different rank insignia on her collar from the last time he had seen her.  “Welcome to New Avalon” Victor greeted “you wished to speak with us, Quiaff?”  Victor asked using the language of the Clans, he could see the disgust on the Clan warriors faces they remembered Victor Ian Steiner-Davion from the Clan War.  They remembered how he challenged them all to a Trial of Refusal and how he defeated the Crusader Clans in Battle against the Coalition forces led by Victor, a Coalition that had seen the rebirth of the Star League Defence Force which now controlled Terra and had reopened Unity City things that the Clans aspired to.

â€œAff, Prince Victor” Sterling said intentionally not using his full title or surname.  “Prince Burton, it is good to see you again, I wish to thank you because of your actions I am now a Galaxy Commander within the Snow Raven Clan.  A position that has allowed me to come here in the stead of my Khan, and has enabled me to thank you in person.”

â€œI did my duty, which I believe you are here for?”  Burton asked not pushing to use the Clan interrogative like his father had, stepping slightly back Victor allowed his son to take the lead again feeling that thing his father had warned him of “pride.”

â€œAff, Clan Snow Raven is willing to return four worlds to the stewardship of the Federated Suns and House Davion.  I believe the populations would particularly enjoy a return to their previous rulers.”  Sterling said laying the Snow Raven offer on the table.

â€œSomething I am sure the First Prince would welcome, at what price?”  Burton asked

â€œThere are natural resources on these worlds we would like continued to have access to them” Sterling stated “we have put much effort into exploiting these resources.  The population knows how to work the equipment; we would like to have continued access to the resources that come from the world.”

â€œSomething we can work with, I a sure” Burton said careful not to agree to anything

â€œWe would also like to explore further relations with the Federated Suns; you have obviously found a way to work with Clan Nova Cat and are not averse to allowing Clan Sea Fox’s merchants to travel within your space.  The Raven Alliance would like to explore closer ties with the Federated Suns.”

â€œThe Raven Alliance and not Clan Snow Raven?”  Burton pushed asking the question he was sure his father would have asked.

â€œWe are one in the same young prince.” Sterling said smiling “just because our Clan name and our home are linked do not think us as pacifistic as any of Kerensky’s Clans or that Clan Snow Raven has taken any back seat in our state’s dealings.  We can match blow by blow anything you can throw at us.”  Sterling warned showing that Burton had pushed slightly too far and that despite House Davion’s valiant efforts to build up its naval forces they still could not match the Snow Raven’s might.

â€œWe would also like a closer relationship with your Suns; we wish to understand the Succession States more.  Unlike some of our fellow Clans we Ravens have always believed that working with the Inner Sphere to create the Star League should be our goal not conquest of the Crusaders.”

â€œUnlike your invasion of the Outworlds Alliance?”  Burton pushed he could almost see his father shake his head at the push but Burton held firm.

â€œWe found kindred spirits in the Outworlds Alliance, and a nation happy for us to defend while they help us build.  We are a joint nation not a nation of the conquered and conquerors.”

â€œAnd through extended contact with us you could confirm that?”  Victor asked stepping forward to join his son again.

â€œAff, Prince Victor we could, but I must warn you my people would find it an affront if anyone other than your son was assigned to us.  He was sent to the Nova Cats, he will be sent to us or there will be no deal.”  Sterling McKenna said looking from Victor to Burton.

â€œSir, I am willing if this brings peace along our borders.”  Burton said to his father, he knew the risks he also knew how Clanners behaved and what the price could be if he didn’t agree.

â€œI agree Galaxy Commander; you have a deal in principle.  We will need to work out details for the future diplomatic efforts and the transition of power on the worlds you are returning to us.”

â€œThe worlds have already been abandoned by my people; you are free to land on them when you are ready.  We will return to these worlds every month to collect our agreed share of what is produced there, do not try and cut us from what we are due, we know what is in these worlds and we will be checking what we receive.”

â€œIs there anything else?”  Victor asked

â€œAff, one more point” Sterling said this time looking at the First Prince directly “if the nations that make your Star League were to vote for the expulsion of Clan Snow Raven from the Outworlds Alliance.  You would vote against it” she demanded

â€œWe would vote in the best interest of the Federated Suns, of the Star League and of the Inner Sphere.  Your actions will demand the actions taken against it, not ours.”  Victor answered carefully he was not going to agree to never attack the Ravens but he would not order assault against them for nothing.

â€œDeal with the Federated Suns honourably and we will deal with you the same” Burton finished speaking for his father thinking along the same lines.  The Snow Ravens Sterling especially seemed convinced by his words, while Victor Steiner-Davion was very happy with his son’s steps at representing his world and their nation.  Over the coming days Inner End, Hazelhurst, Bastrop and Kennard were returned to the Federated Suns Draconis March.  For the most part the people of the world had refused to adopt Clan ways and instead been dealt with by Outworlds Alliance citizens but there were small shows of the Clan’s conquest in other places throughout the worlds which would take more time to remove.

White Aerie (Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser)
Nadir Point, Sudeten
Jade Falcon Occupation Zone
9th October 3085

In a flash the Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser White Aerie jumped into the Sudeten broadcasting its Clan Nova Cat IFF signature, immediately four DropShips deployed from its belly two Raven-class Carriers and two Vanguard-class assault ships.  The system was the capital of Clan Jade Falcon’s Inner Sphere Occupation Zone but there were no WarShips at the jump point.  Instead aerospace fighters deployed from the Sudeten Jump Stations challenging the Nova Cat invaders.

The Nova Cat force identifies themselves and their intention to hold a Trial of Possession for the newly produced Shadow Cat II Heavy BattleMech produced by the Jade Falcons.  Instead of replying the Jade Falcon fighters declare a Trial of Possession over the White Aerie itself a former Jade Falcon vessel.  The Nova Cats unwilling to lower their bid smaller than the Jade Falcon challengers eliminate two whole Stars of Jade Falcon aerospace fighters wining safcon for Nova Cat forces to travel in system and land on Sudeten.  One of the two Vanguards travels in system landing on Sudeten and challenges the Jade Falcons for a copy of the Shadow Cat II and manufacturing rights.  The Nova Cats fight with a combined arms trinary of one Mech Star, Two Vehicle Stars and one Battle Armour star against a Jade Falcon Mech/Battle Armour Trinary.  The fighting is brutal between the two Clans but the Nova Cats are victorious as requested the Nova Cats gain two Shadow Cat IIs and manufacturing rights for the BattlleMech.

As the Vanguard rises from the planet a Jade Falcon WarShip, the Sarna Mercer a Sovetskii Soyuz-class Heavy Cruiser, jumped into the system and declared a Trial of Possession for the Vanguard and everything onboard it.  The Nova Cats inform the Sarna Mercer of their previous two victories and the Jade Falcon agreement of Safcon.  The Sarna Mercer informs the Nova Cats they are not bound by any previous agreements made and give pursuit of the Nova Cat DropShip fortunately the Vanguard had already built up enough speed to keep it ahead of the Sarna Mercer all the way to the White Aerie.  As soon as the Nova Cat DropShip arrived at the WarShip it was rapidly docked and the Black Lion jumped out of the system into the Hell’s Horses claimed Occupation Zone beyond the Jade Falcons sphere of influence.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

New Avalon News Service
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
14th October 3085

â€œGood evening ladies and gentlemen I am Jennifer Martin bringing you the news from across New Avalon and beyond.  Today’s news has been dominated by a young prince and a mysterious date.  Just weeks after Burton Davion stole headlines on Tikonov with Countess Pamela Achernar as the First Davion Guards were welcomed to their new assignment now he is stealing headlines across New Avalon with a mysterious female.  Last night throughout New Avalon Burton and this female” she said showing a picture of Burton Davion dressed in a suit with a tall female with dark hair and a blonde streak at the front “according to witnesses the couple stole looks everywhere they went and Burton was seen buying drinks for everyone all night.”  She said the picture changed slightly to show only the female “we don’t know who Burton’s guest was only that she seemed uncomfortable when separated from Burton, perhaps they have served together so far no-one knows.  All I can say from this reporter to a happy Prince - good luck and don’t get into too much trouble.”

Commanding-General’s Office
Ecol City, Thorin
Star League Protectorate
16th October 3085

Commanding-General Archer Christifori looked up at the officer who stood to attention in front of him Katya Christifori, his wife and fellow officer.  Standing up “ Lieutenant-General Katya Christifori, it is my honour to serve with you, and my pressure to confer this promotion to the rank of General in the SLDF and, on the recommendation of General Caradoc Trevena, I appoint you Head of Star League of Intelligence.”

â€œI accept both responsibilities gladly, you do know this means you may have to look after Morgan more often.”

â€œA duty I would gladly accept.  We do have more pressing concerns however, take a seat.”  He said changing a control the table a small starmap showing the Inner Sphere with the Star League Protectorate worlds highlighted.  Tomorrow the High Council will announce that both Oliver and Zosma have joined the Star League Protectorate and requested SLDF protection, after years of Lyran, Oriente and Marik interest they have chosen to come into our fold.  I’ve already cut orders for the Second Royal Regimental Brigade to transfer there.”

â€œVladimir will love that cadre duty, he was enjoying keeping the Capellans busy and the Federated Suns honest.”

â€œToo much fun from some of the reports I have seen.  It’s time for a different pace for the Brigade.  Unfortunately I think they could get more trouble than they are bargaining for, the former FWL powers wanted Oliver and Zosma despite the damage done to them over the years.  They are still interested in both Castor and Devil’s Rock.”

â€œAs I understand it, certain SLIC elements have been deployed on both worlds over the years, especially Devil’s Rock, according to the last report I read because of the Free Worlds League’s collapse no-one has been willing to touch it because of the organized crime families that are there.  I’m not sure if its somewhere we would want to go, I would end up having to put an entire Special Operations Group on the planet just to keep it safe.”  She said, after several weeks reading over General Trevena’s notes in preparation for this posting she’d done some research.

â€œI have a few units that could do with the practice however until we are “invited” my hands are tied.  Personally I’d give Devil’s Rock a wide berth but the Council has decreed that the Protectoate should do exactly that and protect people.  We’ve given the Free Worlds League plenty of time to get its self back together and its still a mess, we might need to start moving on some of these worlds.”

â€œWe just need to be careful the Free Worlds League nations are already pissed at us for the New Olympica situation.”

â€œThat was their own fault” Archer stated clearly he knew Katya felt the same but he wanted to make sure he’d said it out aloud within these four walls just so it was completely clear.  “What about out other operations?”

â€œAltair is a none starter, they are more than happy with the Lyrans being in control and the Lyrans are happy to have a knife at Dieron’s throat.”

â€œLovely allies the Inner Sphere nations are” Archer commented about his home nation.

â€œIndeed” his wife agreed “Thorin will do what Mulphrid does and so far Mulphrid isn’t interested in the Star League, in fact they seem to be closer to Freedom and Skye every year.”  She said finishing off the Lyran part of the brief.  The SLDF was now involved in nearly 75% of all operations on Thorin now with the University, Fort and new Spaceport all under Star League control but the people were still very Lyran.  “Keid, New Home and Byrant are all progressing very well, again freedoms within the Federated Suns are slowing our involvement with the populations largely allowed to go about their business it makes things difficult.  For the Federated Suns’ part they are happy as our border is seen as somewhat safe so New Avalon doesn’t seem fused either way they are happy with the taxes and an easy world to look after.”

â€œOverconfidence from House Davion, never” Archer said sarcastically as Katya continued

â€œWe’ve had some feelers from Formalhaut but by in large Dieron is already feeling isolated so it’s a world I don’t think Warlord Dieron will want to lose.  It could cause major problems with the Combine if we pushed it.  The Capellans have abandoned all ideas of trying to sway New Canton back into the fold.”

â€œSo all in all secure enough?”

â€œQuite, the only two areas I see major problems from is Wasat, Berenson and Menkalinan in the Former Free Worlds League.  Our people were forcefully removed off Berenson when we approached the government there, there’s high Capellan influence on the worlds and the Capellan March of the Federated Suns have shown interest.  Add in Augustine’s continued interest…”

â€œPotentially a four way conflict fun” Archer mused quietly “and no doubt if they all ended up fighting over it, we’d get pulled in anyway?”  He said quietly which Katya nodded in reply.  “Maybe we could have a WarShip jump through the systems fly the flag get there attention?”

â€œCould work, would certainly keep other powers on there toes.”  She agreed

â€œYou said two areas?”  He asked Katya nodded changing the map perspective showing the Lyran/Former Free Worlds League border between the Duchy of Tamarind-Abby and the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth, there were at least two dozen worlds in that region that were no-mans land the recent acquisition of Epsilon and Nockatunga by the Duchy of Tamarind-Abby hadn’t helped tensions.

â€œBetween Colfax and McAffe is still a hotbed of trouble waiting to explode.” Katya warned

â€œWe don’t have the money to hire mercenaries to keep them quiet, or the resources of our own to garrison that area.  I’ll talk with the Archon see if I can make sure eyes are kept away from that region on the Lyran High Command, maybe we could have some Clan trouble that would keep everyone’s swords sheathed.”

   â€œFor a while” Katya agreed

â€œDinner?” Archer asked changing the subject

   â€œSure, you cooking?”

â€œI thought we could eat out just the two of us?” Archer said smirking

â€œI’m sure Darius and Catherine wouldn’t mind looking after Morgan a little longer.  According to Catherine it makes Darius feel like he’s in command of a Platoon again and at this rate Morgan will know how to march like a seasoned veteran before he’s ten years old.”  Katya said laughing

â€œHe does know that we plan on giving Morgan a choice about his future?”  Archer asked Darius Hopkins had trained him to be a solider and looked after him since his father had passed away.  When the Thorin Militia had joined the SLDF Darius had chosen retirement after many years of service to the Lyran Crown.  Archer’s part-time housekeeper/part-time babysitter Catherine Daniels had kept Darius busy in his retirement as had Archer’s young son.

â€œAccording to Darius, the boy will know his place and how to take orders even if his uniform is a green one.  And that and I’ll quote “no son of the commanding-general will look sloppy on parade” Katya said giggling she’d served with Darius in the milita once apon a time before the time of the SLDF.

â€œMaybe Andrea could look after Morgan for a while?” Archer suggested jokingly knowing that Andrea Christifori, his younger sister, was far too busy trying to keep up with the family business’ growing contract list.  “Then again there could be worse than Darius…”

â€œAgreed, now what do you fancy, Italian?”  Katya said forgetting business becoming his wife once more.  It always amazed him how she could go all business to personal in an instant while he always found it difficult to forget Star Maps, Assignments and BattleMechs.

Deep Space
Strana Mechty System, Kerensky Cluster
Clan Homeworlds
21st October 3085

Exiled to the darkest wastes of the Strana Mechty system since the founding of the Clans the Prinz Eugen was a Star League Navy Texas-class Battleship that none of the Clans were willing to accept into their Toumans.  During the Exodus between the Inner Sphere and what would become the Clan’s Pentagon Worlds the crew and passengers staged a mutiny against General Aleksandr Kerensky.  The leaders of the mutiny had been escorted after a brief battle against marines loyal to Kerensky but the Prinz Eugen was forever tainted in the eyes of the Clans.

Instead the ship had been left damaged from the mutiny and turned into a massive prison ship devoid of weapons the ship was allowed to drift.  On board the prisoners were allowed to mingle freely while the guards controlling the bridge and engine room maintained critical equipment guarded by Elementals from the Clan’s Ebon Keshik.

On the 21st October something happened aboard the vessel, exact information was unknown to the outside world but in a blink of an eye the ship was gone with no sign of where it had gone.  When the monthly prison shuttle arrived with three new prisoners all they found were three dead Elementals who had suffocated in their suits.  The Ebon Keshik not wishing this loss to be known to all Clan society quietly eliminated the shuttle and began an investigation without informing the Grand Countil however given their limited resources no sign of the Texas was found.
