Into 3096

3096

AFFS Military Base
St Ives, St Ives PDZ
Capellan March, Federated Suns
8th January 3096

As Captain Kym Hasek is moving across the First St Ives Lancers training yard a sniper takes a shot at her.  The bullet strikes the upper part of her right thigh and travels down her leg shattering the bone and knee cap only the rapid response by Colonel Richard Steiner and her bodyguards stop her losing the leg however the nerve damage makes it unlikely she will ever have the reflexes to pilot a BattleMech again.

Diplomatic Meeting, Nova Cat Watch HQ
Tortuga Prime, Nova Cat's Den
Periphery
11th January 3096

Six days ago the Clan Wolf WarShip Stealthy Kill, a Black Lion-class Battle-cruiser, had arrived in orbit over Tortuga Prime.  A single Wolf DropShip had landed on the planet the vessel had carried the Wolf saKhan Jennifer Winson from the Occupation Zones for an unscheduled visit with the Nova Cat Khan.  The Wolves like everyone else had tried and failed to gain access to the Nova Cat's capitol system of New Barcella instead landing at the Nova Cat's Watch Command base.  Most visitors to the Nova Cats entered the Nova Cat's Den via the New Aega system for the Wolves to break this established protocol meant that it was something important.

Canin Rosse had traveled to the planet and now sat across from the Wolf saKhan.  She  twenty years younger than Canin she had long blonde hair which had been shaved at the sides while a scar ran under her left eye across her face to her left ear.  “saKhan Winson, welcome to Tortuga” he said

â€œAn ugly little world you have here” she said distastefully.

â€œAff, the very reason we did not choose this as our capitol.”  He answered her Tortuga was largely abandoned now with only the Nova Cat Watch and captured mercenaries or pirates who refused to be bondsmen or that the Nova Cats did not want within their Touman.  The Watch and Nova Cat engineers used the majority of the world as a live fire test ground to test their newest weapons of war.

â€œAh yes, New Barcella, a world you still hide from prying eyes one would almost believe that you had Blood Spirit blood in you Khan Rosse” she said verbally sparing with him almost trying gain a reaction.

â€œNeg, only Nova Cat” Canin said quietly “what is the reason for your visit Wolf”

â€œWe wish to enter into a contract with you” Jennifer Winson said “we wish for one of your WarShip Stars to join us for a period of one year this star would include the Legacy” she said naming the Nova Cat's

   â€œOne year for what?”

â€œCombat operations, transport and support.”  The saKhan explained

   â€œFor an entire year?”

â€œAt least we may request an extension to this” she explained.

â€œAnd what would you expect us to accept in exchange for this?”

â€œWe are willing to offer you production rights for our newest OmniMech a design based on the Lobo BattleMech” she began seeing the Nova Cat Khan was not impressed “we would include a production facility with this trade.”  She said expanding the deal beyond what Khan Fetladral had originally planned the Nova Cat Khan still did not look convinced.

â€œWe cannot simply give you an entire star of WarShips” Rosse said emphasizing the size of the force involved “we would need to support them replace lost crew, provide them with a place to rest and refit.”

â€œWe will provide you with full access to our available facilities.”

â€œAs will your own forces considering you also wish us to deploy the Legacy I doubt that you will be spending resources on our craft.”

â€œWhat is your desire Nova Cat.”

â€œA system within your Occupation Zone, for the duration of the contract, which is close enough to the front-line to make capable of supporting ours and your forces.  We shall deploy a defence force for this planet with our WarShips to not tie up your forces.”

â€œAn entire system” Winson said emphasizing herself this time for the size of the Nova Cat's desires.

â€œFor the duration of the contract” the Nova Cat Khan repeated.

â€œOur Khan will have to confirm it.”

â€œOf course, we will use this time to prepare the force that is being deployed.”

â€œIncluding the Legacy” Jennifer Winson prompted him it was obvious that the yardship was of particular importance to the Wolves.

â€œIncluding the Legacy” he confirmed the Nova Cat shipyards could cater to their needs.

Anthony Brett-Marik Memorial Land and Air Works Factory
Tamarind, Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey
Former-Free Worlds League
24th January 3096

Behind schedule the Anthony Brett-Marik Memorial Land and Air Works Factory opens for production on Tamarind.  The plant dedicated to Anthony Brett-Marik is named by his daughter the new Duchess of Tamarind Chloe Brett-Marik.  The LAM Factory would produce the Shadow Hawk LAM, originally built by Gilmour MilTech of Talitha, under license.

Mercenary Warehouse, Mercenary Quarter
Bowang, Bowang Free Trade Sphere
Former-Free Worlds League
26th January 3096

As part of Bowang's continued development as an open world and a mercenary trade world sections of the planet had been turned over to mercenary commands with massive warehouses built to accommodate any size of BattleMech.  The so-called Mercenary Quarter had been expanded over the years to allow for nearly two dozen battalion sized commands.

Standing near the front of the hanger the unit's commander Foxx Ital looked at the assembled warriors.  Foxx himself was originally from the Federated Suns, formerly a member of Jerome Sandoval's Robinson Strikers Regiment, but his warriors came from all walks of life.  Many of them were former Clansmen all four of the unit's aerospace fighter pilots hailed from Clan Snow Raven and Clan Sea Fox, while several of the MechWarriors hailed from Clans Nova Cat, Ghost Bear and Jade Falcon.  The rest were natives of the Free Worlds League, Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns Foxx Ital had specifically not chosen seasoned mercenary warriors for the command instead warriors who had formal training as Mech, vehicle or aerospace crews.  For their first contract the new unit Foxx's Hellraisers accept a garrison contract with the Bowang Free Trade Sphere and are assigned to the world of Wolot.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

time for an update my thanks to the authors of XTRO Most Wanted you've given me some awesome ideas for the future.  >:D

Downtown Zanzibar
Tamarind, Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey
Former-Free Worlds League
10th February 3096

The Bounty Hunter, Aoife O'Kyan, had been given an invitation to Tamarind by an unknown source.  She'd been told to take her BattleMech with her into the downtown area of the planet's capital at a certain time and to tune her comms systems frequency into that of the local militia.  She'd found that Tamarind's BattleMech laws were quite lax and with a lick of paint her Marauder looked like any other mercenary Mech.  She'd waited in the same spot for nearly two hours and was about to call quits when a call came over.

â€œAll commands Apache Wing aircraft a modified Hawk Moth VTOL, codenamed Verwandlung, has just launched an unprovoked attack on Colonel Newblood” the message came through “the Colonel is dead... the rest Apache Wing are under house arrest.  Hawk Moth is to be considered at large and dangerous hunt down and destroy.”  The voice said moments later the modified VTOl flew over the Bounty Hunter's position opening fire on a Tamarind Militia vehicle with its rotary autocannon peppering the vehicle with hits.

â€œA good enough introduction?”  Suddenly the Bounty Hunter was asked over the same frequency.

â€œIntroduction!!  You murderous bastard prepare to die!”  Another voice called as a pair of Aeron Strike VTOLs flew into view firing their lasers at the Hawk Moth both shots went wide.

â€œWhat are your terms?”  Aoife O'Kyan replied ignoring the new aircraft for a moment watching as the first VTOL jinked and avoided weapons fire.

â€œEqual share of operations I participate in, which will not be all operations that you have an interest in, and transport” the pilot replied as the Hawk Moth pulled up into a loop-the-loop drawing down behind the Aeron's moment's later the Hawk Moth's rotary autocannon barked back to life tearing through one of the craft.  Aoife smiled inside her BattleMech's cockpit watching the other craft attempt to turn away straight into her crosshairs.

â€œAgreed” she said not caring who heard her as she fired a single gauss rifle shot through the air from the Marauder's torso.  The hypersonic slug flew rapidly into its target tearing the rear stabilizing fin from the aircraft's body sending it into an unrecoverable spin.  As the craft spun to the ground striking a group of houses the Bounty Hunter began to move having no intention on getting caught in this introduction.  “Docking bay ninety-four “R” the Overlord-class vessel land within the aerospace fighter bay.  Brigand” the Bounty Hunter said her ship was in fact in bay 49 but if the pilot knew what was there then they may gain the “R” reference which Aoife had meant as “reverse.”

â€œI understand” the pilot said changing course obviously planning on leading the militia on a merry chase before joining them.

Avoiding the patrols the Bounty Hunter herself slipped into the Mule-class Transport DropShip and waited for nearly three hours before sign of her new recruit.  Surprisingly instead of arriving at the DropShip's cargo deck was a single Galaport Ground Tug pulling with it a cargo trailer using the cargo name of “Brigand” the Bounty Hunter's code.  This assassin was not stupid at least Aoife noted as she approached the vehicle.  Once the outer door of the DropShip had closed the side of the trailer opened to reveal the Hawk Moth VTOL folded inside the trailer along with tons of spare parts and two support crewmen, the tug itself had a crew of three more including the pilot made six she thought.  “More than I expected” she said as the pilot stepped down she was a young woman, perhaps even younger than the Bounty Hunter herself, she had long red hair tied back into a pony-tail “Kafka” Aoife said quietly “not what I expected.”

   â€œSpeak for yourself, Bounty Hunter”

â€œTradition is a grand thing” the Bounty Hunter replied smiling.

â€œYes it is” the pilot agreed

â€œThey are all with you?”  She asked looking at the crew who looked at Aoife outside her armour and were just as surprised as the pilot.

   â€œYes, a problem?”

â€œNot if you keep them in line” Aoife said “if they are a problem you will deal with it.  You will pay them from the cut you receive.  Agreed?”  She asked the pilot didn't look completely happy but she didn't have much of a choice the Bounty Hunter had not sat on her laurels since gaining the position she now had six other MechWarriors supporting her as well as a very competent support crew.

   â€œYes”

â€œGood you will be shown the areas that you are allowed in.  There are areas that for now you will not be given access to.  We need to gain each others trust first, you understand?”

â€œYes I do” Kafka said “do we now learn your name?  Or does that come with trust also?”  She teased.

â€œYou know my name, it's Bounty Hunter” she said turning walking away Kafka's people were now hers but they would be trusted so far and not any further for now they were an unknown element to this new world for Aoife O'Kyan.  After reading the previous Bounty Hunter's notes she knew some of the pitfalls to avoid, hiring an assassin was perhaps not her best move but it should make things interesting and now that they had seen her face without its armour they would leave only when she allowed them or in a body-bag.

Several hours passed and the militia search for Kafka and the “unknown” BattleMech that had assisted them had ended.  Their DropShip had been checked by launch control however no-one bothered to visit the Mule-class Cargo ship as everyone knew that the ships were not designed to carry combat elements.  Aoife had heard that the Apache Air Wing, who Kafka had betrayed, had been released from house arrest and allowed to continue with their contract after being cleared of any involvement in the militia commander's assassination.  Two days later DropShips at the spaceport, including the Bounty Hunter's, were allowed to resume normal operations and leave the planet to their next target.

Command Bridge, Chancellor's Destiny (Du Shi Wang-class Battleship UPGRADE)
Shennong, Sian
Sian Commonality, Capellan Confederation
13th February 3096

Dragging himself through the hull of the massive WarShip Kong-jiang-jun Chang Uong entered the command bridge of the Chancellor's Destiny.  “Attention!” He called out gaining their attention “for years this ship has remained hidden as our Capitol's last line of defence.  Today we finally have our unveiling” he said, he'd left out that since the First Succession War the Chancellor's Destiny hadn't been able to navigate or move on its own.  Only recently with the return of WarShip production facilities had the Capellan's been able to repair and upgrade the Du Shi Wang to modern standards.  Instead of trying to move the vessel to the shipyards of Necromo to repair the ship the Capellans had spent nearly thirty years upgrading the facilities carved into the moon of Shennong before they had even began work on repairing the Battleship.  Now once the vessel was clear of the moon the facilities here could repair any of their WarShips and possibly even build new ships.

â€œNow we have been tasked with protecting our homeworld from five heavily armed DropShips which we believe have come from the renegade St Ives worlds they have avoided the Wudang Jian.  We will stop them from getting anywhere near Sian and destroy their ground forces in space.  Prime all engines and take us out of this bay.”

Nearly two hours later the Chancellor's Destiny, the last Capellan Confederation Du Shi Wang-class Battleship, fired its thrusters and slowly slipped clear of Sian's smallest moon.  The ship tore through the camouflage tarps which had hidden it and the facility below for so many years only a dedicated scan of the moon would have spotted the WarShip something the Capellans had long forbidden.  The attacking DropShips were within a couple of hours of Sian which had been defenseless to their approach now however they had a nine hundred thousand ton WarShip in their path.  “Particle cannons and lasers only people we don't need to reveal too much about her.”  Uong said quietly the Chancellor's Destiny's original weapons had been repaired fully however the new weapons systems that had been added to the craft still needed live firing testing which would take a little longer.

As the DropShips charged in the forward battery on the Chancellor's Destiny came to life with the forward particle cannon array opening up on the first DropShip, an Overlord-class troop ship, the craft took a Naval Particle cannon shot to the front of the ship which set the craft out of control a second tore through the middle of the ship as it spun splitting the ship in half.

The remaining DropShips scattered however they had no chance.   Kong-jiang-jun Chang Uong watched as his relatively inexperienced crew slaughtered the remaining four DropShips with capital weapons fire.  Several aerospace fighters attempted to launch from the vessels to engage the Chancellor's Destiny however the Battleship's crew quickly and efficiently switched their naval lasers to anti-fighter fire.  The lasers blanketed the area in laser fire tearing multiple aerospace craft to pieces  in rapid succession.

Announcement
Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
20th February 3096

The leader of the Federated Suns First Prince Victor Steiner-Davion stood on a podium with two other officers both of whom had recently served in the fighting against the Draconis Combine.  “Ladies and Gentlemen, Marshal of Armies Galen Cox has served the Federated Commonwealth and Federated Suns since 3042.  He has defended the Inner Sphere and the Federated Suns from many many threats and he returned to us from retirement following the death of his and my friend Reinhart Steiner.”  Victor announced “Galen step forward please” he said Galen immediately did “today on your second retirement I announce your membership into the Order of Davion” he said presenting the man with a blood-red shield with a black fox crouched on it.  “You were not born to any of the worlds we hold but you have served us well.”  Victor said Galen was originally from the Lyran Commonwealth's side of the now defunct Federated Commonwealth.  He like many others had felt a personal loyalty to the First Prince and joined the AFFS following the dissolving of the AFFC with the removal of Katherine Steiner-Davion, a woman that Galen had once been engaged to, he had been allowed to return to the Lyran Commonwealth to see his family but each time he had returned firmly stating that New Avalon was his new home.

â€œThank you, sire” Galen said saluting crisply Victor returned the salute and the man stepped back Galen may be stepping down as Marshal of Armies but Victor knew that he would be going nowhere.

â€œIn his place a hero of the recent conflict with the Draconis Combine and the commander of the Crucis Lancers Brigade Sora Higginson” Victor said turning back to the crowd “Field Marshal please step forward” he said the young woman did as she was asked.  Many would question just how Sora Higginson had gotten to where she was while being so young but Victor had seen her record and spoken to people who had commanded her and who she had commanded in twenty years of service with the AFFS she had not stepped a foot wrong she had fought against House Liao and Kurita and won against both she knew how to use her troops and which fights she could and could not win.  “You are now Marshal of the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns your duty is to everyone who serves the Federated Suns and everyone who resides on our worlds.  Do you understand and accept these duties?”

â€œI do sire” she answer looking him in the eye Victor suppressed a smile he was glad to see she was willing to look right at him.

â€œThen your first duty is upon you” Victor said stepping aside allowing Sora to take the podium.

â€œPeople of the Federated Suns we have been harmed in our recent conflicts, many of our people have been lost in a war that we did not ask for.  However we now have a chance to rebuild.”  She said speaking calmly “pending approval from the High Command today I announce that the Third Davion Guards RCT will return to active duty within the AFFS” she said immediately gaining a cheer from the crowd both Victor and Galen exchanged a glance and a small smile but Sora continued.  “The Third Davion Guards RCT were deactivated as an AFFS unit following the Clan War, the end to their time in the shadows has been long overdue, the Tenth Deneb Cavalry which was destroyed in the recent fighting will be rebuilt to its former strength.”  She said gaining another cheer “while the First Robinson Strikers will be reformed as an LCT and placed on the rolls as an independent formation under the direct direction of New Avalon.”  She said gaining some applause most people knew the unit's history and Jerome Sandoval's attempt at seizing power on Robinson.  “Now is a time to forget our mistakes, to remember our loses and rebuild from our defeats” she said “for tomorrow, tomorrow is a new day.”  She promised them stepping aside as Victor retook the podium the crowd cheered and applauded again instead of interrupting them Victor Steiner-Davion turned to his new Marshal of Armies and joined the crowd gaining an even stronger cheer.  A new dawn for the Federated Suns had begun, a new generation of leadership Victor thought now he just needed his son to return to them to continue to shape the future of their nation.  For the last two months there had been little to nothing from Burton Davion or his people who were still within the Raven Alliance. Victor was worried, another war, even a war to save his son was not what his nation needed.

Next bit, answering the Sterling McKenna question.  Having the heir to the Federated Suns staying in the Raven Alliance or the two formally being linked just couldn't happen too munch for my taste.

My thanks to James Tanaga for the continued tales from Clan Fire Mandrill and the Rim Collection.

Border Raid
Lungdo, Oriente Protectorate
Former-Free Worlds League
4th March 3096

In a raid against Lungdo the Principality of Regulus debut their new Ogre Battle Armour suit alongside the Blades Legion Mercenary Command.  The Ogre suits with their Heavy Battle Claws and Short Range Missile systems made quick work of multiple militia armoured vehicles.  The Blades Legion Mercenaries used to fighting against Periphery opponents takes heavy damage against the Oriente defenders with several of the medium and light machines that formed the command's Second and Third Century's lost in combat.

Following the Blades Legion's return to the Principality of Regulus the Principality offers the mercenaries several squads of Longinus Battle Armour which Colonel Ian Redwolf gladly accepts.  With the Blades Legions large infantry support the Battle Armour suits are quickly filled by the most experienced troopers while new infantry soldiers are hired to fill the infantry ranks.

RCJS Cassandra’s Folly
All Dawn, Rim Collection
Periphery
7th March 3096

Jerry Able leaned against his cane as he looked out the observation window on the JumpShip that the Mandrills used as a Space Station at the slowly encroaching Davion WarShips and DropShips, under escort by the RCS Mandrill Provider. Behind him, his daughter Karen and Khan Aemelia Showers sparred against one another in a war of words.

â€œFor the last time, Khan! The Federated Suns forces are coming here to fight the Stone Spirits! Not these Serpents you and the Mandrills seem to be so scared of,” his daughter answered the Mandrill Khan, obviously irritated.

â€œWe are not scared!”  She snapped back “if you knew the Serpents as I do, you would bes as concerned as we are!” Khan Showers yelled at her. “And we are yet to know their full strength,” she rebutted to Karen after pausing for a moment to keep calm.

As he tuned the two out, he spoke quietly to his companion, the wheel-chair bound Lysa Djerassi, who herself was looking out into space alongside him. “Is this your Khan speaking or your entire clan, Adjutant?”

â€œMy clan is behaving like hurt little munchkins at the moment,” the wheel-chair bound clan woman confessed to him. “Truthfully, we are all scared this could be another attempt to destroy our clan.”  She said in a low voice “if it is, even our full military might not be enough to protect the Collection. For that reason my clan is worried we may have to flee once again, after only just feeling as if the Collection is our home, especially due to the Steelsoul Khanate preparing to evacuate their trade enclaves on All Dawn.”

Jerry felt for her. The Mandrills arrival in the Collection was touch and go for a while, at least until he had figured out they only wanted a home for themselves and needed an outlet to vent themselves on. The Six Week War with the Lyrans and ongoing operations against the Stone Spirits had given the Mandrills that much-needed outlet while also helping the Collection not only to protect itself, but also to expend. Yet, the Collection was now very much at risk, for the Mandrills now were panicking and because they were, so were other members of the Collection, specifically those closest to where the Serpents came from, specifically Waypoint, and Able’s Glory.

â€œHow strong were the Serpents when they evicted your clan from the Homeworlds?” he asked her. Though he did not know the entire story of their eviction, he did know the Serpents were at least a part of it.

â€œAt the time we were in the Homeworlds they were still three individual clans; the Cloud Cobras, Star Adders, and Steel Vipers.  Once combined the three clans had probably as much firepower and personnel at their disposal than any of the other Invading Clans,” the clan woman reported to him.

Jerry barely kept himself from doing a double-take, for the Mandrills themselves only held a fraction of the firepower of a Clan like Clan Wolf or Jade Falcon, and they were the Collection’s strongest military power by far. Still, the Serpents aggression seemed not to be an invasion, merely raids, and small ones at that. Coupled with the lone Serpent warrior captured at Waypoint, it seemed the Serpents were no longer at that mighty strength after the failed invasion of the Inner Sphere. “Could these raids be a scouting force, quiaff,” Jerry asked her a moment later, all the while still tuning out the background argument between his daughter and the Mandrill Khan.

â€œNeg,” Lysa replied back. “They hold no pattern. Nor do they stay long enough to properly see our full martial strength or even our potential. Together with what the bondsman reported, we are looking at saKhan Dante Truscott and his followers, mostly his Bloodhouse from the Star Adders and some select Cloud Cobra warriors who still look to him to lead they are still a potent threat Jerry Able,” she warned him.

â€œThen why the worry, adjutant?” he asked her, perplexed.

â€œWe took heavy losses against the Lyrans. Our older sibkos and nearly all our reserve forces were all destroyed in holding onto our depository. Only now have new trueborn warriors begun to reenter our ranks and solahma long past their prime are being phased out to help train our future.” The clan woman paused and Able well knew why, for he visited the battlefield weeks afterward. The remembrance wall just outside the depository held all the names that died in the Six Week War. Nearly all of names belonged to the active warriors of the Clan, the elderly garrison troops, and members of the police sub-caste, as well as nearly all the active warriors that defended All Dawn from the Lyrans. Their sacrifice cost the Mandrills greatly, yet allowed the Collection as a whole to strengthen themselves, serving to unite the fragile nation, and ultimately quickly ended the war with the Lyrans on their own terms.  Now the surviving cadets were beginning to pass their first Trials of Position joining the ranks of their under-strength Touman Able knew that Khan Showers still had worries about her naval forces as none of the experienced crews were getting any younger.

â€œWe rather not risk taking those losses in the future,” the clan woman spoke back up “which is why there is a concern within us.”

â€œAnd with these Serpents much closer to All Dawn than the Spirits, it seems your clan want to use the Davion forces to go snake hunting, quiaff,” Jerry questioned her.

â€œAff,” Lysa answered him, causing Jerry to shake his head. Long memory and short fuses was what he had found the Mandrills to be like. Still, it meant so long as the Collection held to its agreement, he had no worries about the Mandrills running off unless they had no other choice. For the moment, they had options, and for that, he was thankful.

A few moments passed as they both watched the Davion task force slowly begin a formation around the Monolith JumpShip, all the while ignoring the two behind them. “Will you be going through with it,” he finally asked the clan woman. Instantly the mild argument behind them stopped, as both Karen and Khan Showers became silent, obviously having heard his question towards the wheel-chair bound woman. He was referring to the woman’s decision to commit seppuku, honorable suicide as it was known among the clans.

â€œAff. It is my time,” was her simple response.

â€œYou have helped the Collection greatly, you know. You could help it to become greater still,” he commented to her, looking down on her for the first time in their conversation, hoping to get her to change her mind.

â€œMy clan will remember me, ovkhan, as will the Collection. That is enough for me,” was her reply, using the clan honorary title to show her respect for him. “The first sibkos using my blood-lineage are now passing their first trials to become warriors. I will die knowing my lineage lives on in them.”

â€œWell said,” remarked Khan Aemelia Showers, who, with Karen, had joined them.

â€œWould it not make more sense to continue living and being an asset to your clan in the Collection’s government?” Karen asked.

â€œNeg,” Khan Showers supplied to Jerry’s daughter as Jerry caught out of the corner of his eye Lysa Djerassi looking down, seemingly in shame. “It is not the Clan way to remain while those who are younger and more able” she said glancing down at the disabled warrior “can serve.  Our way celebrates the fullness of life.”  Showers said “she will live on immortally in our surviving warriors, what else could a warrior want?”

“The Collection shall remember you fondly as well Adjutant,” Jerry remarked diplomatically, knowing he could not change the mind of the wheel-chair bound warrior. “You lived with honor and now may die with honor as well.” As he finished, he reached out with his hand to Lysa.

â€œYou have my thanks, President Able,” she answered him as she gave him a warrior’s handshake. As she gave his daughter and Khan Showers warrior handshakes as well, it again reminded Jerry of just how different the clans were to the Inner Sphere. He was just thankful it was the Mandrills and not any other clan that had arrived at the Collection’s doorstep. Perhaps the Ghost Bears, he mended to himself privately.

An hour later, Jerry, his daughter, and Khan Showers made their way to the shuttle bay to meet the Davion commander in charge of the AFFS taskforce, General Andrew Redburn, and his senior officers. All three knew they would not be seeing Lysa Djerassi alive ever again and had said their goodbyes in their own way as they left the observation deck, with Khan Showers leaving being a large amount of a drug, called necrosia, for the Fire Mandrill warrior, who nodded her thanks. Why the Cat did so, he did not know, though her response answered some of it. “She was once a Scorpion. And by their drug, she will go and join her people in death, as she joined us in life, as I will hopefully die at the hands of a Smoke Jaguar when it becomes my time, if I live that long.”

He of course knew the Fire Mandrills had access to Goliath Scorpions and Smoke Jaguars, thanks in part to their cloning technology and genetics depository, as well as pets they brought with them, and had even formed a zoo to help their transition to the Collection, even encouraging civilians to come and visit the zoo. He did make a note to himself to visit the zoo before he had to return to Gilfillan’s Gold, as they came up to the shuttle bay and awaited the Davion officers to shortly arrive. Perhaps during the visit, he could hopefully convince Karen to look for someone to marry. He was not getting younger after all.

Public Announcement
Sharpe, Star League Protectorate
Capellan Confederation
11th March 3096

The Star League Defence Force announces the survival of the Sharpe system during all the Succession Wars.  The Capellan Confederation immediately lodges its claim for the system as it is within their Sian Commonality however the SLDF refuse this claim stating that the world will be added to the Protectorate worlds with a full SLDF garrison on the ground with Naval support.  The SLDF use this announcement as an opportunity to try and end the fighting between the Capellan Confederation and Federated Suns an opportunity is missed as low scale fighting continues between the two states on at least seven different worlds.

Following the Nova Cat operation against the SLDF Listening Post on Carcri the Clan had maintained discrete links to the planet.  In the first three months of 3096 the planet had suffered four raids from different pirate groups who took supplies and people from the planet leaving the remains worse off but still able to survive.  Unwilling to allow this to continue the Nova Cat's Forty-sixth Nova Cat Cavaliers and New Worlds Clusters land on the planet.  The Forty-sixth an elite formation is for defence while the New Worlds Cluster is to help support and build up the colony's infrastructure finally the Ridgeback, a Drake-class Corvette, is deployed to the planet for additional defence.

Burton Davion's Quarters
Snow Raven Command, Alpheratz
Raven Alliance
31st March 3096

Burton Davion held onto the two handles taking another step forward he felt the pain rush up his leg according to the Snow Raven scientists it would subside in time however he had to use the new limb for that to happen.  Instead of stopping he took another step hearing the doors behind him open he tried to take a third step stumbling forward grabbing the bars for support.  He turned around to see Sterling McKenna standing there in her duty uniform holding their son in her arms immediately he was taken aback by the mess her face was in the entire left side of her face was swollen and bruised.  “Khan McKenna, what the hell happened to you?”  He stammered looking at her.

â€œThat would be Galaxy Commander McKenna” she said glancing at the floor.

â€œGalaxy Commander...” Burton repeated the rank “what happened?”

â€œI was challenged by the Clan Council over my “study” of the freeborn child named Luther” she said looking down at their son. “I was defeated in a Circle of Equals and forced to surrender the real reason for his presence with me.  The Council stripped me of my position as Khan.”  She said stepping forward towards Burton “they are still discussing who will replace me.  Burton, you need to leave, I cannot protect you.”  She said looking at Luther again “and I need you to take our son.”  She said “I cannot protect him either.”

â€œCome with me” Burton said leaning on the bars “both of you, come with me.”  Burton pleaded with her.

â€œI am a Clan warrior” she whispered stepping closer to him.

â€œYou can be so much more than that” Burton said “come with me.”  He pleaded again.

â€œThe Mountbatton is still in system they are still loyal to me, for now at least, they will ensure your WarShip can clear the system.  Please leave quickly its not safe” she said placing Luther down in the small cot beside the chairs.

â€œCome with me” Burton said more forcefully “be more” he said to her but she left the room without another word.

An hour later Burton's small party were heading to the Prince's DropShip under a heavy guard of Snow Ravens Burton was confined to a wheelchair with his baby son on his lap his leg was nowhere near strong enough to carry him and the child safely.  The Clan Council was still meeting over the revelation of what Sterling had done Burton had heard angry words being exchanged between several warriors.  At the foot of the ramp Burton saw Sterling McKenna standing wearing a plain grey jumpsuit devoid of insignia.

â€œGalaxy Commander, the Federated Suns party must leave Alpheratz Quiaff?”

â€œAff” Sterling agreed “Prince Davion, I request asylum in the Federated Suns” she said clearly

â€œGalaxy Commander, you cannot!”  The Snow Raven guard began but Sterling quickly raised her hand to silence him.

â€œWarrior, I was Khan of the Snow Ravens, I know our ways I will face trial after trial and then death.  If I remained I would be a reminder to our Clan of my failures and my betrayal of our way.”  She said none of the warriors disagreed with her “this way I can be forgotten and our Clan can move on.”  She promised looking at Burton “Prince Davion, my request?”

â€œOf course” he said agreeing to her joining them.  Less than an hour later they were lifting off the surface of the planet heading towards the FSS Nathan Duvall.  The Texas-class Montbatton escorting them through the Raven Alliance to the border with the Federated Suns and Sterling McKenna's new life.  In the Raven Alliance the Clan Council officially strip Sterling McKenna of her Bloodname and rank but far away from the Raven Alliance Sterling chooses to retain her Bloodname.  Arriving on New Avalon in July 3096 Burton announces that he and Sterling are engaged to be married.  News sources make as much a note that Burton is walking assisted with a crutch than he has become engaged to a former-Clansmen or that the two have a son meaning Clan blood will be mixed into the future leadership of the Federated Suns.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

DC , do you have the stats  for the Nova Cat Drake class corvette yet .

They are actually already on the forum originally the class was from Blacknova's Kapteyn Universe.

If you follow this link you'll see it as post 20.  You'll also see the Hakaze-class Escort Destroyer which I'm using as a Sea Fox ship and the original Splendid-class Cruiser which was modded a bit to become the Splendid-class in my AU.   Also on that thread are the Capellan designs I "borrowed" from the KU.

April

Buffer Zone
Capellan Confederation/Federated Suns border
Star League Protectorate
9th April 3096

With the fighting over former St Ives Compact worlds continuing and escalating on the Federated Suns/Capellan Confederation border the SLDF make their move.  Moving WarShips and ground forces in rapidly from Kittery the SLDF smove onto Vestallas and St Loris forcefully breaking up the fighting between the two Succession States.  In both systems the SLDF WarShips and ground forces face off against units of the Federated Suns and Capellan Confederation who have been contesting the world.

The SLDF “Peacekeepers” move in rapidly separating the forces challenging them to engage the SLDF in combat while in space SLDF WarShips and Pocket WarShips challenge the respective nation's vessels.  In each case the two Succession States refuse to open up a second front against the SLDF and agree to peace talks to be held with the Commanding-General on Kittery neither the Federated Suns or Capellan Confederation forces retreat from the two planets.

Nova Cat Genetic Labs, Nova Cat Repository
New Barcella, Nova Cat's Den
Periphery
16th April 3096

On the Nova Cat capitol world deep within the Clan's massive Genetic Repository Clan Nova Cat scientists begin experimenting with creating a new caste; which they name Mystic.  The Mystic Caste is planned to bring the visions experienced by the Nova Cats to the fore of their future with these new warriors blessed with greater understanding of visions and more spiritual power within the Nova Cat Clan.

To create this caste the Nova Cats open their vaults of unused blood legacies to create a new “Mystic Bloodline” for warriors born to this line there will be no chance of a Bloodname.  Khan Canin Rosse, someone who has experienced many visions, does not like the idea of an exclusive Bloodline for the the Mystic Caste.  Although he does not stop the Clan's scientists he decrees that “Any warrior of Clan Nova Cat may join the Mystic Caste.  For those who do so they will long be remembered as members of this Clan who put everyone's future ahead of their own as they will forever forsake any chance or winning a Bloodname.”  Initially the scientists do not like this interference from their Khan however they also realize that any non-bloodnamed member of the warrior caste who joins the caste would add their bloodline to the Mystic Caste increasing its size.

Negotiation
Alpheratz, Raven Alliance
Periphery
27th April 3096

The arrival of Clan Wolf's saKhan to Alpheratz had surprised many including the new Khan Jacob Siegel.  The new Raven Khan was a massive man of Elemental stock he'd originally been bred to be a marine onboard one of the Snow Raven's many WarShips he'd move up the ranks steadily to command of the Conqueror-class Battle-cruiser Arc Royal and the Swift Wing Naval Star.  The Wolf saKhan had cut to the chase quickly.

â€œA star of WarShips?”  He repeated slowly “that is a lot of vessels for an Occupation Zone of your size.  My Watch informs me that you recently visited the Nova Cat's Den did they turn you down?”

â€œNeg, the Wolves and Nova Cats came to an agreement.”  Jennifer Winson replied “they agreed to contract a star of WarShips to our command.”

â€œSo the Wolves will have two Stars of additional WarShips?”  Seigel said quietly with that amount of firepower the Wolves could likely take out all the WarShips fielded by the other Clans in the Occupation Zone should they wish.

â€œAff, we will offer you a Heavy OmniMech production line and a planet to support your WarShips from.”

â€œThat is quite a prize” he said a planet within the Wolf Occupation Zone would be of use to the Snow Ravens, away from the Raven Alliance, while a heavy OmniMech production line could not hurt.  “Just what kind of operations can my WarShip crews expect?”

â€œEscort duty, system protection and combat against other WarShips and DropShip units.”

â€œInner Sphere or Clan units?”  The Raven Khan asked carefully

â€œLikely both Khan Seigel” the Wolf answered carefully

   â€œClan Wolf becoming ambitious Quiaff?”

â€œEmbracing who we are” she stated smiling there was a glint in the Wolf's eyes that told the Snow Raven leader that the Wolves.  “Do your Ravens agree to our terms?”  She asked the Raven Khan stayed quiet a moment then slowly nodded his head he knew exactly which Star to send.

I think the SLDF are starting to get to the point where a number of House Lords may look to teach them a lesson.

I think the SLDF are starting to get to the point where a number of House Lords may look to teach them a lesson.

The Succession States ran rampant for four Succession Wars without an SLDF the SLDF's presence for now is holding them back from that for now.

But you're right they can only be pushed so far...

SLDF Mechbay, The Fort
Thorin, Star League Protectorate
7th May 3096

Looking up at the Penetrator always gave him chills he remembered sneaking into the Mechbay while a child just to look at it.  He knew every inch of the Mech every battle it had fought in.  “Something else for you to miss?”  His father Archer Christfori asked stepping up beside him.

â€œThere are plenty Mechs on Terra” Morgan Christifori told his father “but none quite like her” he said his eyes not leaving his father's Penetrator.  “Are you taking her to Kittery?”

â€œNo, if I need my Mech on Kittery then we have no chance of making peace, I think the Covenant should be enough firepower anyway.”  He said Morgan couldn't disagree the Cruiser did have significant firepower but there was something so impersonal by it.  Morgan had enrolled in the Star League Defence Force as a MechWarrior trainee he was only seventeen years old but with consent from his parents he was being allowed to enroll; as it turned out he'd be eighteen only six months after the start of his classes.

â€œShame she's not getting some time out of the hanger it's been a while”

â€œThere will be a time” Archer said with a small smile “Come on we'll go find your mother then I'll give you a lift to Terra” he said guiding his son away from the silent BattleMech.

Weapons accident
Andrey, Tukayyid
Clan Space Inner Sphere
9th May 3096

During a weapons test an unexpected discharge strikes Chin Cooper the Clan Hell's Horse Loremaster of the Clans.  The discharge kills the Elemental and three technicians instantly with three others dying the in the days that followed from acute radiation poisoning.  Several days later Klaus Harper of the Snow Ravens becomes the new Loremaster of the Clans beating out Nova Cat Oathmaster Klick Lenardon to take the position.

Harper who has felt that the Snow Ravens culture is being lost in the Raven Alliance had already been en-route to Ramsau the new Snow Raven claim within the Wolf Occupation Zone instead headed for Tukayyid.  Harper suggests that should the Clans, in general, become engaged in campaigns against the Inner Sphere that elements of the Ebon Keshik be allowed to keep their combat skills up the other Clans agree to the proposals however they stipulate that the Ebon Keshik cannot gain additional territory for Tukayyid and that they will not engage the Inner Sphere alone which Klaus Harper agrees to.

Waypoint Lagrange Point
Waypoint, Rim Collection,
Periphery
13th May 3096

Light Commodore Matthew Davion, of the Victoria Davions, looked out at the small fleet of WarShips and JumpShips that were readying themselves for Operation: Snakehunter against remnants of the Serpents. The FSS Ferdinand, a Robinson II-class Transport, out there supporting the Mandrill/Rim Collection fleet. The FSS Ferdinand, alongside the FSS Zibler, had escorted the RCS Providence to the Rim Collection, carrying the teams of engineers and technicians under Matthew’s command, the Fox's Teeth, Delta Company and a number of Rabid Fox Battle Armoured troopers.

While the FSS Zibler, a Davion III-class Destroyer, would remain only until the Warsaw, which was now a Federated Suns vessel, could safely limp to the Federated Suns, the Ferdinand, his engineers and technicians, and the ground forces were slated to remain for a bit longer, with the Prince's Champion General Damien Redburn as their commanding officer.

While they were sent here to aid the Rim Collection against the Stone Spirits, instead the they were now going to be used against the Serpent remnants that had raided the Rim Collection the past few months. He found it strange that the Mandrills were worried so much about the Serpents, who possessed a force which was estimated at being roughly three or four Cluster clusters in size, a battered destroyer, and two worlds, rather than the Spirits he and the rest of the AFFS forces supplied to the Collection were supposed to be learning about and assisting the Rim Collection in fighting.

In his reportedly non-combat role Matthew commanded the technical units, were here to help to teach the Collection and its pet Mandrills in how to use the equipment on board the RCS Providence, the Fox-III Refit WarShip which the Federated Suns had traded to the Mandrills for the Warsaw. After seeing the condition of the crippled Whirlwind-class Destroyer Matthew did not know how the Mandrills had kept the Warsaw operational, especially without a yard to stop further degradation was beyond his knowledge, though he held onto the theory the Mandrills had to be insane to still be using it, even just as a training vessel.  Now the Whirlwind was a Federated Suns vessel and after a brief spell under repair inside the RCS Providence, where critical damage would be repaired, she and her escort the FSS Zibler would head to the Federated Suns for extensive refit and repair at Galax Shipyards.

While most of his technical units were indeed helping with repairing the Warsaw for its journey back to the Federated Suns, Matthew and a detachment of engineers had been allowed onto the Resolute.  The vessel was quite possibly the last operational New Syrtis-class Carrier, originally a Davion vessel hundreds of years ago, she had been taken by the SLDF into Exile and eventually been added to the Clan's reserve WarShip pool.  The vessel had been dragooned into the Clan Fire Mandrill Navy during the Clan's retreat from the Clan Homeworlds taking heavy damage in the process.

Matthew and his engineers had agreed to help repair some of the Resolute's systems while at the same time they had jumped at the chance to study the WarShip; a vessel of their nation's history.  The Federated Suns had little need for a Carrier, with the FSS Black Prince and FSS Pegasus both capable of carrying significant amounts of aerospace fighters, the vessel was of interest to the engineers.  Already Matthew could see a modified version of the design becoming useful addition to the FSN possibly as a Battle-cruiser.  A report, he knew, the Collection and Mandrills would ultimately see as well; due in large part to having to use the Collection’s HPG grid to send and receive messages from the Federated Suns.  This he didn't consider to be too troublesome as the Collection could benefit from seeing what the Federated Suns could do with the Resolute in the long term. Matthew could even imaging New Avalon being willing to trade an Avalon Block II-class Cruiser or a First Prince Block III-class Battleship for the vessel which again could benefit the Collection.

The sound of a door opening caused him to turn around to welcome the visitor. It was President Able’s daughter, Karen. Seeing her, he blushed, as he remembered how he met her while taking a shower after using the on board gym facilities. She had come into the locker room, along with two other women and a male clan warrior of Elemental-stock. Upon seeing him, she had decided used the shower next to his, chatting him up. He was, as a military officer, used to the no gender segregation of facilities however it was still unnerving to him to have a full grown woman showering right next to him. That it was President Able’s own daughter only made him be more on his guard.

â€œSo this is where you have been hiding, Davion,” she spoke to him her use of his family name annoyed Matthew he was so much more than 'Davion' but few ever saw it. “Enjoying eying the fleet,” she asked with a wink.

â€œYes, though it surprises me the Collection and its Fire Mandrill allies are putting so much effort into this operation and not against the Spirits. Surely they are more of a threat,” he answered her, ignoring her subtle innuendo. He was hoping to figure out just how much the Fire Mandrills had sway with the Rim Collection, their firepower he guessed was only part of it, and how she answered his question would answer that.

â€œThe Mandrills are angry, that’s all,” she supplied him with a shrug. He knew that of course. What he wanted to know was why. “The people that make up The Serpents were the ones that ultimately forced them out of the Clan Homeworlds. That and something about dezgra Burrocks and traitorous kindraas,” she informed him a moment later Matthew guessed that even she did not fully understand it.

â€œSo its vengeance?  You're involving us in a blood feud in our first Op together?” Matthew asked her a little annoyed himself in some ways he was surprised that Damien Redburn had decided to go along with this.

â€œThat and the Serpents are too close to All Dawn for the Mandrills to feel comfortable with. The Collection too for that matter,” she answered him it made tactical sense to eliminate or neutralize the closer threat first even if it sounded a little too personal for Matthew's tastes.

â€œFrom the briefing yesterday, it sounded like the Collection didn’t really care about the small raid on Waypoint last month and more that your government is simply using it as pretext to enlarge your nation,” he easily countered Karen’s latter remark.

â€œTrue,” she answered him with a beautiful smirk on her face. “Though we rather only have two enemies on our borders rather than three,” she supplied further with another wink. He didn't like how she classed the Lyrans as an enemy the Succession State was not someone that the Rim Collection would want to aggravate; and someone the AFFS troops would not fight against unless they were attacked first.

Well whatever you want from me that isn’t going to happen, he thought getting back to Karen's flirtations. While the Collection was itself friendly and he wouldn’t mind bedding the admittedly nice on the eyes upstart in front of him, there was no way in hell he would allow himself to be used this blatantly to bring the Federated Suns into alliance with them. At least he won’t be the catalyst, he decided to himself. “Fair enough,” he answered himself. “Don’t you have duties here? I mean, not that I don’t mind all the blatant attention from you. But don’t you, I don’t know, have duties somewhere else?”

She giggled at him. Oh hell. “Not until fourteen hundred hours when I have to be on the bridge, conveniently with you. That means we have, let me see. Four hours to spend with each other,” the last she said as she swung her arms around his neck, making him look down on her beautiful green eyes.

â€œI am not going to be used for an alliance between the Collection and the Suns.” There that will shut her up and end her looking at him like a tiger would meat, he thought.

â€œWhoever said I want to make an alliance with the Federated Suns through you, Davion,” she asked him then kissed him softly on the lips. Bloody hell! After she kissed him, she continued. “You are after all only a member of the Victoria Davions and not a Davion of Avalon; and the Federated Suns is so far away.”  She whispered leaning close to him the distance Matthew was from home the total opposite to the feeling he had now.

â€œWhy me?” Matthew finally asked her after she gave him another small kiss.

â€œMy father is after me to have children, as if he didn’t have enough grandchildren from my siblings. And while I don’t want to be married, having a child with someone with the right pedigree is something I would definitely not mind,” she admitted and then gave him another kiss. “You having three children, all with different women, while you yourself are unmarried means you don’t mind casual encounters and prefer to stay unmarried, just as I do. Am I wrong?”

â€œSo is that all I am? Breeding stock for you,” he asked her astonishingly, he didn’t disapprove of the notion, although he didn't like being used for his name once more.

â€œFor now, yes. In the future? Who can say?” she answered him smiling seductively. “Now are you going to continue to stall my advances towards you? Or are you going to join me?” She asked the last, letting him go.

â€œDefinitely joining,” he replied with a grin.

Hours later, both he and Karen were leaning or holding onto handholds on Resolute’s bridge near each other and the Fire Mandrill Khan, as the WarShip and the fleet made the final jump to Harlez. “The fleet all present and counted for, Star Admiral,” reported a Fire Mandrill technician manning a station to their right. “One warship and three JumpShips sporting known Serpent transponders are orbiting the third planet.”

â€œGood. Send word to the FSS Ferdinand to match our speed and hold position. The Mandrill Provider will stay to protect the JumpShips,” ordered Star Admiral Malcolm Lynn the Rook, the Mandrill's Sylvester-class Transport had remained behind defending All Dawn. “Under no conditions are we to allow Truscott and his band of Serpents to escape. Quiaff?”

â€œAff, Khan,” yelled out the female Fire Mandrill technician manning the comm station. “The Ferdinand reports it will comply with our orders, Star Admiral,” she reported a moment later.

â€œGood. Let us see how the Davions fair in war,” the Star Admiral relied to the entire bridge, answered by a few laughs.

â€œYou will find we Davions know war very well, sir,” Matthew Davion answered to defend the slight of honor the Fire Mandrill warrior had likely unknowingly just given to them. He caught Karen smirking at his answer and figured he indeed had answered the Mandrill correctly.

The clan woman manning the comm station piped up. “Khan, Star Admiral, message from the surface. Khan Truscott of the Serpents is demanding to speak with you khan,” she reported.

â€œTransfer to this station,” Khan Showers ordered.

â€œAff, Khan,” replied the young woman, who just as quickly sent the message to the station nearest to the Fire Mandrill Khan. It allowed Matthew to see how the Mandrills treated their lower castes. So far, the Mandrills surprised him, with Warriors being seen by he and his people many times to be helping their lower castes with their assignments, even socializing with them when not on duty and being completely professional with them when they had to give orders, certainly not acting as overlords which he had expected, though he had been informed the Fire Mandrills had a very close bond with their lower castes during the months-long trip to the Collection.

â€œThis is Khan Aemelia Showers, commanding the combined Collection forces in system. Surrender, snake, or be destroyed. Though I prefer you legless lizards fight us,” Khan Showers growled out ferally, eliciting verbal agreement all across the bridge.

â€œThis is Dante Truscott.”  The man said identifying himself, he had been the saKhan of the Star Adders once, how the mighty had been caught low Showers thought.  “We will defend ourselves with all our might, stravag monkey. Will you fight with honor befitting a clanswoman you once were or will you fight us as the other clans have done? Without honor,” the Serpent Khan answered the older Fire Mandrill Khan. Matthew thought it odd the man responded that way, though he shrugged it off, for he didn't know the full situation concerning the Serpents and other clans; or the Clans in general if he was truly honest this trip would be full of learning experiences and not just ones from Karen Able.

â€œDo not speak of honor to us! You who defied our show of honor and instead called us dezgra in the Grand Council! Who helped run us out of the Homeworlds, they were OUR HOMEWORDS as well snake!” Matthew heard the Fire Mandrill Khan yell out to the Serpent Khan. Yup, definitely vengeance speaking, Matthew noted to himself the Mandrill leader was furious about how her Clan had been treated by their kin.  “To make things worse YOU and your allies could not even remain in control of the worlds you forced us from!”  She continued her anger spilling out “YOU allowed yourselves to be driven from our worlds.”

The Serpent Khan looked as if he was embarrassed by the Mandrill's challenge and anger. Interesting, Matthew thought to himself. “At the time, my Khan and I believed your clan to be too weak to survive,” he admitted “We thought we knew what was best Khan Showers, we were wrong, you have done well Khan Mandrill.”  He said more respectfully.

â€œThank you, Dante Truscott,” Khan Showers answered more calmly. “We have fought long and hard to be where we are now.”

â€œAs the Collection’s pet monkeys, quiaff?” The Serpent Khan responded, eliciting angry responses all over the bridge. Matthew himself was warned never to call a Mandrill a monkey and now he was seeing why; for he could see the palpable anger all the Mandrills on the bridge now had.

â€œWe are not the Collection’s pets, legless lizard!” Khan Showers yelled her anger again at boiling point. “They are our partners and allies. They have given us a home, where our kin turned their back on us, and helped us to defend ourselves when our brethren turned against us!” A moment later, she added menacingly, “Which has allowed us to maintain our strength and even made us stronger. Tell me, what have you lost since forcing us from the Homeworlds?”

Matthew Davion thought Dante Truscott would respond in normal clan fashion, in anger, so when the other leader didn’t, he was shocked. Instead, the Serpent Khan's former defiance had change to defeat. How and why, Matthew could not say. “Everything, Showers. Everything. Our enclaves. Our way of life. Our people. Everything. We lost everything.” A moment passed, all the while Matthew noticed the tension all over the bridge seemed to deflate over something. He guessed it had something to do with the Homeworlds he knew the Mandrills, at their current strength, were still a fraction of the strength they once held. “I will save what I can of my people, as your predecessor, Cassandra Faraday, did with your clan. I alone will fight you and all you lead here, Khan Mandrill. All I ask is you treat my people with respect and give them a new home I could not. Quiaff?”

Matthew did not know what Dante Truscott meant by that, glancing at Able's daughter he guessed nor did Karen, yet it seemed the atmosphere of the bridge had turned to something akin to sadness, with many of the Mandrills seemingly lost in remembrance of something, at least until Khan Showers finally answered their opponent. “Neg, Serpent. We have lost too much already to the infighting that consumed so many and to the Society. And I will not lose more of my clan to ensure the destruction of yours. I will not see the death of yet another clan, if I can help it.” She paused, and turned to look at Karen, then quickly turned back to the monitor. “I offer this only once. Join the Collection and stand with us. Or I will carry out your wish to absorb your remaining forces into Clan Fire Mandrill. You have four days to decide. Khan Showers out.”

The second the connection to the planet was cut off, Matthew watched as Karen Able approach the Fire Mandrill Khan. “What in the hell was that!” she demanded angrily.

â€œClan business,” the elderly warrior curtly supplied as her only answer. “You would be wise not to interfere.”

â€œI get it. I get you want revenge for whatever happened in the Homeworlds! Now is your chance! Yet you turn it down! Why?”

â€œI did not turn it down, Star Marshal. I merely offered the Serpents a chance to survive. The same offer your Collection offered my clan,” she answered back from his place on the bridge Matthew knew that Karen Able liked the sound of 'your Collection.'

â€œIt is not your place to decide who can join the Collection!” was Karen’s angry response “it's our nation!”

â€œTell me, Galaxy Marshal. Will your father or his President’s Council, or even the Rim Congress, stand against my decision to allow the Serpents membership, granting our Collection access to another WarShip?  One that is the same class and in better condition than the one you have had us trade to the Federated Suns?” She asked glancing at Matthew who shifted nervously he did not want to be drawn into this but Showers wasn't finished.  “Not to mention adding three or four more clusters worth of battle-hardened Clan warriors to our defences? Or to the control of the two worlds the captured Serpent warrior told us the Serpents currently occupy? Neg, I did not think so. Nor do I think you will when it is up to you in the future.” Khan Showers seemed to have deflated Karen, Matthew noted, as she silently turned and slowly left the bridge to calm down.

Khan Showers turned to Matthew then. “You may want to go after her. She might need to couple.”

   â€œWhat…how…?” he stammered out.

â€œOr not,” she remarked before setting to push herself for the bridge exit, leaving Matthew confused as to what just happened he'd assumed the Mandrills were the junior partners in the Collection grabbing onto the rapidly growing Periphery nation for survival.  Showers display in front of all these Mandrill warriors and who was likely the future leader of the Rim Collection had shown him a far different side of the relationship and one that General Redburn would want to hear about.

McCarron's Armoured Cavalry Raid
Small World, Alya Prefecture
Military District of Dieron, Draconis Combine
25th May 3096

For three days the McCarron's Armoured Cavalry had fought against the Eighth Dieron Regulars Regiment on the planet of Small World.  New recruit Leftenant Ariana Steiner had fought with the unit against the Combine.  Initially her actions had been restrained however now that they were falling back towards their DropShips she had become more erratic.  Colonel Elizabeth McCarron guessed that she was working through the loss of her parents and wished to take it out on someone, something she could understand, she had assigned Ariana to the rear guard as the unit retreated into their DropShips.  The AFFS had given them this assignment in search for any POWs who may have still been held by the Draconis Combine following their recent conflict.  McCarron's Emperor Assault Mech stood near the DropShip overlooking the evacuation on the perimetre she watched as Steiner's Warhawk OmniMech walked up to a Draconis Combine Shootist the Mech hit the Warhawk with a one-two punch from its arm mounted particle cannons staggering the heavy Mech.  The Warhawk stepped into close range with the Shootist taking an autocannon blast to the torso as she fired her particle cannon again beheading the Combine Mech Elizabeth McCarron shook her head there was no need for Ariana to get that close or to take that amount of damage.  “Assault Three fall back to the DropShip.”

â€œOn my way” the pilot replied targeting a Longbow Assault Mech with her weapons as she retreated.  The Warhawk sidestepped the Longbow's counter-attack striking out again with its particle cannons causing more damage.  Elizabeth watched as Ariana again stepped out of the way of the Longbow's missiles showing that the pilot had no lack of skill in the assault Mech.

â€œAssault Three, leave it, there will be another time” McCarron ordered as the Warhawk stepped forward firing a flight of long range missiles and a particle cannon at the Longbow knocking it down to the ground.  “Assault Three, now!” Elizabeth McCarron snapped finally the warrior seemed to listen and began to retreat towards the DropShips.  It took the assault Mech only a few moments to cross the distance between the perimetre and the DropShip.

â€œIs everyone on board?”  Ariana Steiner asked holding at the entrance to the Overlord.

â€œGet on board, Leftenant, in the future move when I order you the first time.”

â€œI blunted their assault” Steiner complained stepping her Mech into the DropShip bay Elizabeth McCarron looked for any threats that were close most Combine Mechs still hovered near the fallen Longbow.  Steiner had blunted the assault but the damage her Mech had taken was unnecessary she had shown fighting the Longbow she could take another Mech on without taking the damage she had taken fighting the Shootist.  She'd make sure that Ariana would help repair the Warhawk and if any additional parts were required she would pay for them; unfortunately Elizabeth McCarron did not thing the financial hit would get the warrior's attention.

Cassandra, Fire Mandrill Primary Enclave
All Dawn, Rim Collection
Periphery
2nd June 3096

Star Captain Justine Truscott followed her Khan and Khan Aemelia Showers of the Fire Mandrills out of the DropShip. Behind her, the remnant sibkos and Scientists Dante Truscott had led to Harlez and her supernova began unloading from the Overlord-C DropShip that carried them from the Monolith-class JumpShip that served as an orbital space station to the Mandrills. Already, she could see they were surrounded by what was likely the entire strength the Mandrills had on planet.

â€œKhan, the Third Rim Lancers CCT, Nineteenth Strikers, and All Dawn’s PGC’s all present and accounted for and stand ready for inspection” reported a large Elemental warrior that had met them, the Fire Mandrill saKhan most likely, Justine decided, as she spotted his rank pins showing the same rank as Khan Aemelia Showers. “Members of the Nineteenth stand ready to escort the former Adder and Cobra legacies to the repository.”

Khan Showers nodded to the Elemental before turning to Justine’s own Khan. “As agreed, Khan Truscott, my clan stands ready to assist yours in rebuilding your genetics program and training your munchkins, in return for your assistance in defending All Dawn and the Collection from threats. Do you need any more proof of our commitment?”

â€œMy warriors will help to protect the repository, quiaff?” Khan Dante Truscott asked, glaring at the other Khan. “And should we decide to ever leave the Collection, it will be done peacefully, including our members and property here?”

â€œAff. So long as your clan abides by the agreement, mine shall as well. And the Collection too,” the last the Fire Mandrill Khan included, mostly likely as an afterthought the former Smoke Jaguar was not Cassandra Faraday her Clan would do what she saw was fit.

A moment past as her Khan thought of the agreement, allowing her to do likewise. The former Serpent warriors Dante Truscott led would form a new Galaxy within the Rim Collection Touman and defend it from all threats. In turn, the Mandrills would officially share its impressive genetic repository with them.  Truscott's people had no iron wombs in their possession without a lot of Mandrill assistance they would die with the current generation. Though officially there to protect All Dawn, both sides knew Justine’s supernova was there to ensure the safety of her clan’s remaining legacies, nearly all from the Truscott Bloodhouse. What her clan would call themselves, she still did not know, but calling themselves Serpents or even retaining their Star Adder heritage was now out of the question, due in no small part to the failed invasion of the occupation zones roughly two years ago the Star Adders died when they became the Serpents and the Serpents died as they had wanted to now only Truscott's people remained Justine wasn't convinced that they had made the right choice following Dante Truscott but what was done was done.

â€œOnce the gene canisters are finally placed in safety, I will breathe easier, Khan Showers,” Dante Truscott answered at last, bringing Justine out of her thoughts.

â€œVery well. This way, Khan Truscott,” the Mandrill Khan replied, as she led them into the giant step pyramid that housed the Fire Mandrill repository. As they went in deeper into the pyramid, Justine caught sight of weary Fire Mandrill civilians nearly everywhere, many curious to see their former enemies peacefully within their walls.

They reached the repository without incident and the large party watched quietly, reverently, as members of both clans scientist castes carefully moved the vitally important gene canisters into place. Only when they were safely contained inside the repository did Justine and all other former Serpent warriors and Scientists relaxed, if only a little, for now their clan would truly live on.

â€œWhy did you not go through the Trial of Absorption as you originally desired?” Asked Dante Truscott

A moment passed before the Mandrill Khan answered Dante Truscott’s question while she glanced around at the faces of the former Serpent warriors that were around them, including Justine’s own. “Both our clans have suffered, have sacrificed, and faced its darkest hour at the hands of our enemies, our brethren, and we survived. While I and my clan may wish to absorb yours, and finally end the deep feud between us, I could not take advantage of your situation once you told me of what the clans had lost, for it reminded me of the situation we ourselves faced upon arriving in the Collection. Know this, however. We do not like you. We will never be friends and are only allies due to convenience and for the sake of the Collection.”  She said pausing showing yet another side of this former Smoke Jaguar woman; the part that would be loyal to the Collection with her last breath.  “Serve the Collection and we will treat you as any other member of the Collection betray us or them and I will personally ensure none of you survive your Annihilation.  We understand each other, Quiaff?” As she asked the last, the elderly Fire Mandrill Khan held out her hand.

She was met in a warrior’s handshake by Justine’s khan. “Seyla,” he spoke reverently. All around him, Fire Mandrills and the former Serpents, Justine included, answered with theirs, even the Collection freeborn woman who had escorted them here, all unifying themselves as one. How this would work, Justine had no clue, for Adders and Mandrills never got along in the past and now they had a freebirth periphery nation, which in many ways seemed to want to be a reborn Rim Worlds Republic, mixing in with them. Yet, despite these challenges and possible threats, for the first time in a long time, Justine felt something was different. She felt hope.

Nova Cat Expansion
Pagasi, Nova Cat's Den
Periphery
10th June 3096

With their recent occupation of the world of Carcri the Nova Cats “discover” the world of Pagasi; another free colony near the Nova Cat's Den.  The Nova Cat's rapidly move onto the world which has little defences of its own establishing their presence on the planet.  The local population offer the Nova Cats little resistance fearful of the Clan's reaction should they attempt to fight.

Raids
Leyland, Qandahar Prefecture
District of Pesht, Draconis Combine
16th June 3096

Following raids on the worlds of Nowhere and Algate the entire Qandahar Prefecture had been on alert for raids.  They came at night four completely unknown BattleMechs walked out of the darkness into the Leyland militia base firing as they moved.  The first Mech was a massive carrying a huge hatchet in its right arm and a particle cannon in its left arm.  The Mech jumped through the air slamming its hatched down on a militia Panther crushing the cockpit killing the pilot instantly.

As the large Mech turned towards another tactic the other three Mechs moved forward spitting particle cannon, laser, missile and autocannon fire into their targets.  The lance was methodical cutting down the other three Mechs of the defending militia, and several armoured vehicles.  Once their defenders had been destroyed the four Mechs then proceeded to crush the rest of the base killing everyone they encountered.  The four Mechs then disappeared into the night not salvaging anything from the base never to be seen again on the planet.

Office of the Marshal of Armies, Fox's Den
Mount Davion, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
19th June 3096

Colonel Fredrick Davion stepped into the Marshal of Armies office and stood at attention the Marshal of Armies Sora Higginson looked up at him “Colonel, I heard that you wished to see me.”

   â€œYes, sir” he replied crisply

   â€œTake a seat”

â€œThank you, sir” he said sitting down

â€œI hear that you have a proposal for me?”

â€œYes, sir” he said continuing to be respectful “I want to propose raising another Ceti Hussar unit.”  He blurted out Sora looked at him surprised by the blatancy of it.

â€œColonel, you have been with the First Ceti Hussars for six years and have rapidly raised through the ranks despite your name” she said she knew of Fredrick's career and his exploits against the Capellan Confederation and his refusal to use his family name to his advantage.  “However unless you can raid your father's accounts we simply do not have the funding to raise another RCT.”  She said trying to let the young man down lightly instead of disappointment however she saw a hint of a smile.

â€œSorry to correct you, sir, but I know that you've been charged with raising further RCTs along with those you have already publicly stated will be rebuilt.  Son of the First Prince” he explained weakly, finally used your name she thought finding herself surprisingly impressed, “sir, I know that you are probably considering other commands to raise however the Ceti Hussars are a tool that this nation needs more than the LCT Program.  We can effectively garrison worlds and strike at others independently and better than any LCT.”  He said “and with these new ideas that the officers within the First Ceti Hussars have come up with we can be even more effective.”

â€œAnd I am sure that Avalon Arms would not complain either” she said.  Fredrick's proposals suggested that each Ceti Hussar heavy or assault BattleMech lance be supported by a pair or two pairs of Kruger Combat Cars which would act as scouts or harassers.  To provide that kind of support  for the active Ceti Hussar RCTs would probably take years let alone another unit.

â€œNo sir, however it does not just need to be them, other companies could provide ideas and production.”

â€œI'll consider your proposal Colonel” she said finally after thinking for a moment raising to her feet, Fredrick copied her, “thank you for bringing this to me instead of going directly to your father.”  She said and she meant it Fredrick could have likely gone to the First Prince with this and she would have gotten orders to fulfill the request instead Fredrick had requested this meeting first through his RCT commander, who supported the idea, then through the regional and Brigade commander to her following the chain of command and impressive feat from the young officer especially one with royal blood in him.

For several days Sora Higginson sat on the idea that Fredrick had proposed eventually deciding to bring it to the First Prince.  After explaining the idea and its origin, which she was quite sure had landed Fredrick in trouble with his father as he had conducted “business on his assigned holiday time”, Victor had stated he was not against the idea of more Ceti Hussar units being on the rolls noting that the recently added St Ives Janissaries were already similar in set up to the Ceti Hussars units.  Initially she had been tempted to try and tempt one of the Janissaries to the Hussars but she knew that St Ives would be furious by such an approach.  Instead she had another idea and called Fredrick Davion back to her office the Colonel had arrived promptly despite being on holiday he wore his uniform “sir.”  He said standing to attention Sora looked up at him.

â€œI've reviewed your proposal and it has promise” she offered Fredrick looked pleased “I will not raise it as an RCT however I am willing to raise it as an LCT.”  She said the young man looked unhappy with the idea but remained silent.  “You will prove that this concept works.  You will structure your LCT like a Combat Command of the Ceti Hussars.”

â€œMy Combat Command?”  Fredrick said “sir I am only a Colonel.”

â€œYou are thinking more like a Leftenant-General” the Marshal of Armies said standing “Congratulations” she said presenting him with a small box that contained the rank insignia of a Leftenant-General then shaking his hand.  As he digested his new promotion Sora continued “you will form this LCT like a combat command, with aerospace and artillery support, however should it be successful it will be expanded into a full RCT like the others.  Over time we will expand the other Ceti Hussars along similar lines should it be applicable.”

â€œThank you” he whispered in return still in no small amount of shock.

â€œGood luck” she answered “your unit will form on Argyle from there you will have the pick of officers from across the AFFS.  Be warned I do not want to see you gut the First Ceti Hussars for this project.”  She had a feeling that most warriors would not transfer from the First to the Fourth anyway but it was worth making a point.

â€œOf course sir” he answered already he was thinking on where to start an LCT was not what he'd envisioned the Fourth Ceti Hussars to be, then again he hadn't been expecting to command it either, still a lot of work to do.

Twenty-fifth Star League Games
Solaris VII, Star League Stadium
Star League Protectorate
25th June 3096

The excess energy sizzled off of the Black Knight's shield and PPC as MechWarrior Reginald VanJanster pulled the Mech sized Vibro Blade out of the downed Bandersnatch, which laid at his Mech's feet in a crumpled heap, the Mech had been his final active opponent.  The battle, the game, had been a long one with many competitors injured or killed in the fighting.  VanJanster had fought on Solaris VII in the circuits for more than twenty-six years he'd never impressed in the circuits but this was his year.

He'd enrolled in the Star League Games as an independent MechWarrior and with his wife Melissa and daughter watching from the stands he had fought all comers to victory securing the title and his little place in history. Now finally he could perhaps be finished with this world and with this Mech he called Red Reaper.

Command Deck, LCS Archon's Pride (Alliance-class Cruiser)
Tharkad System, Donegal Province
Lyran Commonwealth
5th July 3096

On board the LCS Archon's Pride Duchess Jessica Steiner marries Admiral Patrick Doyle the commander of the Archon's Pride WarShip Group.  Doyle, almost fifteen years Jessica's senior, was considered to be one of the best naval strategists in the LCAF had been a long term acquaintance of Jessica Steiner having previously commanded the LCS Snow Fire during her time on board the vessel.

Northern Forests
Helen, Alya Prefecture
Military District of Dieron, Draconis Combine
12th July 3096

All through the thick forests of Helen McCarron's Armoured Cavalry Mechs dodged and returned fire against their Draconis Combine pursuers.  The McCarron's Armoured Cavalry had coome to the planet expecting the Twenty-fourth District of Dieron Regulars Regiment but instead had encountered the Second Genyosha Regiment with its support assets.  The mercenaries were now in a continuous retreat as their DropShips attempted to find a landing zone nearby to evacuate them.  “Assault Three to Command, continue Evac I'm going to delay them.”

â€œLeftenant, that's suicide” Elizabeth McCarron replied

â€œNegative McCarron it's what's needed done” she replied turning her Warhawk Assault OmniMech towards the enemy “Assault Lance continue to fall back” she ordered her lance filling the air with autocannon, laser and missile fire.  Before taking another step she launched another savage attack on another Genyosha Mech.  “Assault Lance I gave you an order fall back”

â€œNegative Assault Three, we're on your six, we'll hold the back door open when you're ready.”  One of her lance mates replied Ariana smiled engaging another enemy Mech with her weapons.  “Just don't wait too long boss we've got quite a few moving in.”

â€œI see them” Ariana said “Twelve and Six break east target the forests if you can't see the Dracs set as many fires as you can and head for the DropShips.”  She said firing on another Mech “go now guys!” she called out as her Mech was hit by a tightly group of missiles that ripped into her Warhawk's armour.  Two of her lancemates turned and began to move away from them leaving Ariana and her lancemate in an Seven Atlas II BattleMech.

â€œThat leaves us boss” he said blanketing the enemy with missiles and autocannon fire as Ariana fired again.

â€œWe're going west same routine if you can't see them you set a fire got it?”

â€œYup” he replied hitting the enemy again “ready when you are”

â€œGo” she called out both Mechs immediately started moving through the trees crushing the smaller trees as they went firing their weapons into the forest setting several fires.  As the Combine units continued to close the McCarron Mechs set several more fires causing masses of smoke to obscure the field.

â€œAssault Three to Crypt Hammer do me a favour and tell me you have that big gun online?”  Ariana asked

â€œYou're lucky day, Assault Three, you have a target?”  The Fortress-class DropShip commander asked.

â€œNothing specific Crypt Hammer I want you to fire on my position drop the heavy hits”

â€œYou're looking at danger close fire Assault Three?”

â€œConfirmed do it” she ordered continuing to move and fire at the enemy Mechs she counted no less than six enemy designs in close proximity to her and Seven.  Several moments later several artillery rounds slammed into the ground near them.  “Seven, forget taking shots go.”  She ordered backing up she fired the last of her autocannon ammunition.

â€œOnly if you are coming as well, Three, we both need to go” he said as the Atlas was hit by a gauss rifle shot.

â€œLet's go” Ariana agreed falling back as more artillery shots landed all around them.  There was far more artillery than she thought the Crypt Hammer had available as they crashed through the trees Ariana saw nearly a platoon of artillery vehicles had set up near the DropShip.

â€œGet on board” Elizabeth McCarron ordered “you're the last Leftenant let's get off this rock.”

â€œI'll hold for the artillery” Ariana offered

â€œNegative they are on automated controls once they have finished firing they are done.”  McCarron reported the loss of four artillery pieces would hurt but Ariana didn't stop to think further about it instead boarding the Fortress.  Immediately she was directed towards a Mechbay as was her lancemate followed her, before they were even fully secure in their Mechbays, she felt a rumbling in the ship as it's engines began to fire.

The six McCarron's DropShips and their attending aerospace fighters fought up through the atmosphere of Helen engaging the Genyosha aerospace fighters as they went.  The ships continued to raise away from the planet and out of orbit heading into the system.  As they escaped Ariana Steiner moved through the ship reporting to Colonel Elizabeth McCarron's quarters “Colonel” she reported saluting to her regiment commander.

â€œLeftenant Steiner, more performances like that and I might need to promote you.”  She said the Colonel was covered covered in dirt from the recent fighting.

â€œWe lost an entire platoon of artillery, the mission was a bust...” she said

â€œBut that was all beyond your control Leftenant, you stuck to your people and did your job I've very pleased with your performance.”

â€œThank you Colonel” she said saluting again before leaving the room.

Contract negotiation
Lockheed/CBM of Tharkad, Tharkad
Donegal Province, Lyran Commonwealth
15th July 3096

Following the success of the Star League Defence Force in negotiating with Lockheed/CBM of Tharkad for several Peter-class Scout vessels the Federated Suns negotiate for four vessels.  With the funds gained from this purchase Lockheed/CBM are able to expand their construction facilities to four slips while also expanding their development offices and hiring addition staff.  With the company already tasked by the LCAF High Command to produce a new class of vessels the construction of these vessels for the SLDF and AFFS is seen as an effective way of keeping their construction crews at the top of their profession constructing and maintaining the Sub-compact cores that are at the heart of the vessels.

With the Federated Suns already in possession of a Bug Eye-class Surveillance Craft which the FSN have been using as a training craft in the Hadrian's Command system these Peter-class Scouts will be operational vessels of the Federated Suns Navy.

Royal Allard-Liao Spaceport, Tian-tan
St Ives, St Ives PDZ
Capellan March, Federated Suns
20th July 3096

Not long after the Union-X class DropShip had landed at the Royal Allard-Liao Spaceport on St Ives four Battle/OmniMechs painted in the colours of the Royal Brigade of Davion Guards raced towards the primary planetary base.  On the back of a Stealth OmniMech four Infiltrator III Heavy Battle Armour suits rode as extra security.  Entering the base the four Mechs were rapidly escorted to a nearby reinforced hanger since the attempt against Duchess Kym Hasek's life no-one was taking chances.

After parking her Mech in the designated bay the pilot moved down the ladder from her Stealth OmniMech's cockpit to the ground.  The trip had been a short one and with no expected combat Leftenant-Colonel Jaylen Davion had worn her duty uniform in the cockpit meaning she was ready to get started when she hit the tarmac.  She'd been assigned by the DMI to investigate the recent renegade St Ives attack on the Capellan Confederation.  As an officer approached she was very aware of the four Infiltrator III Battle Armoured Bodyguards who had arrayed themselves around her the Heavy Battle Armour suits were hardly invisible despite their attempts at keeping their distance.

â€œLeftenant-Colonel Davion, welcome to St Ives” the officer, a Major she noted, said as he saluted her.  Jaylen returned the salute silently looking over his uniform noticing the insignia of the First St Ives Lancers RCT she knew his face she thought.

â€œYou're Tristan Allard-Liao?”  She said suddenly her memory kicked in.

â€œCorrect” he said curtly he was the only child of Kuan-Yin Allard-Liao the youngest child of Candice Liao.  Kuan-Yin had worked for almost her entire life keeping the people of the St Ives Compact going ensuring supplies reached the planets that needed them as a result Tristan had been born late in his mother's life meaning he was only a couple of years older than Jaylen.  “I have been assigned to assist you in anyway possible.”  He continued the last thing she really needed was a St Ives noble helping her she thought.

â€œThank you Major, I'll try not to keep you away from your unit for too long”

â€œOf course Duchess, we have quarters set up waiting for you for the duration of your stay.”

â€œGet this straight Major, while I wear this uniform my name and title don't matter just like yours don't.  I am a Leftenant-Colonel in the Armed Forces of the Federated Suns and will be addressed as such.”  She stated possibly a little too harsh on the man but she wanted something set straight Burton and Fredrick were not the only children of the First Prince who served their nation's military.

â€œUnderstood” he replied curtly taking the dressing down remarkably well she thought “we have also set aside an office for you.”

â€œVery good, I'm ready to get started, lead on Major.”  She said the St Ives officer turned and headed off into the command complex as Jaylen followed.  Across the hanger she was very aware of the squad of Infiltrator IIIs matching their pace but keeping their distance.  The St Ives command base had been built before Battle Armour was introduced to the military forces of the Inner Sphere so as she entered the base the troopers could not follow further.  A little freedom Jaylen thought for a moment unfortunately her advanced team had prepared for this restriction as she and Tristan entered the complex two suited bodyguards fell into step behind her.  Jaylen recognized both as she stepped past them “Chris, Lawrence, no getting away from you guys is there?”

â€œNo mam” Chris replied she wondered silently if her brothers had ever suffered the feeling of being suffocated by their bodyguard complements.

Launching ceremony, High Orbit
Orbital Facilities, Free-flight Limited/Hellraiser Productions
Oriente Protectorate, Former Free Worlds League
31st July 3096

After three years of hard work the first three vessels produced at the Orbital Facilities over Fletcher are launched by the the Free-flight Limited/Hellraiser Productions engineers.  To everyone beyond those in the shipyard and a select few on Fletcher and Oriente the shipyards had been producing Monolith-class JumpShips.  It had been planned for these three ships to be pulled clear of the shipyards and to the system's nearest jump point so it comes to a surprise to everyone when the three vessels move clear of the facilities under their own power.

The three vessels are revealed to be of a new type of WarShip the Monolisk-class Destroyer.  Sharing the same four hundred and thirty thousand ton displacement and matching the Monolith's nine DropShip collars that is where the similarities end with the Monolisk hulls featuring a far sturdy hull capable of taking the punishment WarShips were expected to, WarShip grade Ferro-carbide armour, a maneuvering drive capable of a maximum thrust of two point five gravities, aerospace fighter bays for up to forty aerospace fighters and room for twelve small craft.  Already these vessels featured extensive conventional weapons bays made up of long range missile, heavy particle cannon and light gauss rifle arrays these weapons sneaked into the shipyard mixed in with other cargo to disguise them.  With the vessels true nature now revealed Hellraiser Productions planned to mount a number of Sub-Capital Missile Launchers, Naval Lasers and Naval autocannons to the hulls along with anti-missile and screen launcher systems for defence to complete the hull a process that the shipyards expected to take no more than a year.

The Oriente Protectorate announced soon after the initial launch of the three vessels that they had purchased all three vessels from Hellraiser Productions naming them the OPS Monolisk, OPS Oriente and OPS Fletcher.  They also announced that the Oriente Protectorate had purchased the next three productions runs planned at the facility for a total of nine vessels.

“Cauldron of Blood”
Repair Base 77, Periphery
13th August 3096

Captain Canin McKinnon, the commander of Delta Company, looked out across the battlefield. The entire area was bathed in blood, bodies, and broken Mechs gaining it the name Cauldron of Blood. Yesterday’s battle had nearly destroyed the combined Federated Suns/Rim Collection force on the planet.

It had started with explosions throughout the cauldron, hidden in wrecked vehicles and Mechs, while the Elementals and Salamanders of the Rim Clanners that were set on the crests in the north and south were suddenly engaged in heavy fire from Stone Spirit forces.  Quickly the forces at the north embankment were overwhelmed while the south fought for their lives. By the time the forces in the cauldron had collected themselves, they had found themselves mostly surrounded by the Spirits in the crest lines of the cauldron, effectively creating a kill zone on the joint allied force.

It would have been a disaster if not for Captain David McKinnon and the Rim Collection’s Fourth Rim Regulars, Canin knew, thinking of his cousin.  David McKinnon and the men and women he commanded were the first ones to recollect themselves turning on the threats all around them. Forming a line made up of what survivors of his Fox’s Teeth detachment and what Rim Clanners that were around them, David McKinnon led a charge up the southern crest line, reaching it just as it was about to fall and continued to hold the line despite heavy casualties.

At the same time, the Fourth Rim Regulars, the only Rim Collection cluster outside the cauldron, picked up its pace and circled around the Spirit’s forces in the north while the forces in the cauldron, including his own Delta Company detachment, slowly forced their way to engage the Spirits in the north. All this happened without any of the promised air support something had gone wrong which Canin was still waiting for an answer. If they had the air support promised by the Collection, and their pet clanners, Canin knew the entire battle would have been different they would have been able to roll over the Stone Spirits and maybe secure Repair Base 77.

Yet they didn’t have the promised air support and now, while the Rim Collection had its first major victory against the Spirits, it was a Pyrrhic victory, one that cost each side greatly. The Spirits of the north crest line ended up being torn apart as they were slowly sandwiched by the forces inside the cauldron and the fourth Rim Regulars, while the Spirits in the south were held just below the crest line. The battle lasted for hours, until the Spirits on the north crest line were finally destroyed, just as the promised air support, with large numbers of Clanner Elementals and Salamanders, had arrived, concentrating entirely in the south, encircling the Spirits there. By the time the joint forces moved to support the south crest line, the entire battle had finally ended.

Yet, Canin grieved, it had cost the Davion forces, including his own, greatly. Of the twelve MechWarriors and three squads of Battle Armour that had made up the Fox’s Teeth David led in attacking the southern crest, only two lances of Mechs and six Infiltrator III Heavy Battle Armour suits several of them were still in surgery.  Rumors had David McKinnon dying of radiation poisoning from his Black Knight BattleMech’s fusion engine being cracked, he must have known his Mech was damaged but he had continued to the end, just as the Collection’s pet monkeys had arrived Canin thought angrily.

Of the Rimmers, it had cost them large portions of the monkey’s Third Battle Cluster and a smaller portion of the Fourth Rim Regulars, and the entire ground component of the First Striker Cluster, including Star Colonel Lopez.

But they had won in the end, he thought grimly, if this was the cost for every battle…Canin shook those thoughts away, refusing to allow them to even enter into his mind. For where doubt exists, death follows soon after, a saying his father, Ross McKinnon, had told him shortly before he had died.

His radio came to life “Captain McKinnon,” he recognized the voice belonging to Leftenant Sandy Hill, an assistant to General Redburn, the overall commander of the Davion forces in the Rim Collection. “Campfire roundup at the Crazy Horse in thirty mikes. Acknowledge.”

â€œRoger that, Control. Save me a seat, will you? I suddenly feel like having some fried monkey steak tonight at the campfire. Over.” As he waited for the Leftenant to confirm the last, Canin didn’t care if the general rebuked him for saying that loud and clear. After today, he was beyond caring if the monkeys heard him.

â€œThis is Redburn,” he was shock to hear General Redburn come into his radio and was himself monitoring the comms. “The monkey steaks are already on the grill. See you at the campfire. Redburn out.” Canin allowed himself a small shrug after Redburn ended the radio connection on his end. It really shouldn’t have surprised him, really.

An hour and a half later, the battle reports from the battle had finally ended. The cause of why the air support was so late was reported by the lone Rim Collection warrior, the star colonel of the Fourth Rim Regulars, an Able no less and apparently the highest ranking Rim Collection officer planet side at the moment. A solar storm in system had reportedly caused much havoc in the atmosphere. While ground radio still worked, it meant radio contact in orbit was sketchy at best. Canin found this excuse to be just too laughable if they couldn't communicate by radio why the hell hadn't they sent down recon patrols, and was about to comment on that, yet General Redburn had seemingly acquiesce to the Rim Collection warrior at least publicly accepting their reasons.

Only after she left did Redburn speak openly to Canin and the other Davion commanders. “If they expect us to believe that pile of horse manure that woman just fed to us, they’re crazy,” he loudly stated. Turning his head to Light Commodore Matthew Davion, who was reporting via HPG, he continued. “Commodore, I want answers, not the Rim’s excuses. Understand?”

â€œYes sir,” Canin heard the Victorian Davion report to their commander. “You want me to use the proper channels or do some side checking?” Canin didn’t know what he was talking about.

â€œThe back door if you trust the source. The front door if you don’t.”

â€œUnderstood Sir,” the Light Commodore responded back to Redburn.

â€œGet to it. Redburn out,” Redburn grunted out before shutting down the comm station, shutting down communication with the commodore. “I need everyone’s opinions. Can our forces maintain combat effectiveness after today?” He asked everyone around the comm table.

As everyone else reported their opinion on that matter, Canin himself stayed quiet, listening to each one and all basically said the same thing. The AFFS ground forces needed weeks to refit and wait for reinforcements from the Federated Suns.

â€œI believe we can still maintain our commitment to the Collection sir,” he advised the general. As the others in the room looked around each other as if he lost his head, Canin continued. “I need to travel to Arc-Royal.”  He said “there are a couple of my family contacts there, I think I can convince them to re-up with the AFFS.”

â€œIf we want them to re-enlist?”

â€œWe do, sir, they should have never left” Canin reported “they were handed a short stick back home but with your authority I can convince them.”  He said

â€œThat's an interesting position to put your CO in Captain” he said sternly

â€œSir these people are very good at what they do and would be worthy additions.”

â€œOkay what about the rest the Fox's Teeth and Delta Company we all took losses?”  Captain Olivia Foreman commander of Delta Company's second company.

â€œWe will need to recruit from the Collection, though I believe after today, the Collection will give us the leeway to do so, sir.”  Canin said refocusing on Redburn

â€œWhy would the Rimmers do so, Captain McKinnon,” asked Leftenant Sandy Hill.

Canin was about to answer when Redburn instead did so. “Because the Collection owes us, Leftenant. At the moment, we’re their only real allies and they know we’re pissed at what their incompetence after this last battle has cost us, especially after showing us how well they could operate with us since we have arrived here to aid them. They will do what they can to keep us here, so long as it doesn’t violate their military agreements with the monkeys and raptors.”  He said “if Canin is able to recruit who he wants we can supplement our lances with these new recruits and anyone from the Collection who wishes to join up with us.”

â€œYes sir,” Canin agreed with him.

â€œAnd what if they don’t sir,” the Leftenant asked.

â€œThey won’t" Redburn assured them confident now after thinking over Canin's idea. "But if they do, we’ll decide then and only then on what to do. Am I clear?” General Redburn eyed the entire table as everyone, including Canin, acknowledged him with a yes sir. “Good. Get back to your units and keep calm around the monkeys. Captain McKinnon, stay behind.”

After they were alone, General Redburn looked him up and down. “You look like you just went through hell, son.”

â€œWith respect, sir, you heard the battlefield reports, both ours and theirs,” he kept his anger just at bay as he reported to his superior.  Damien Redburn could see the turmoil in the man, maybe some time away from the Collection would do him well.

â€œI did. Yet no one else under my command had a family member assigned to this mission,” Redburn reminded him. “I am sorry for your loss, son. And I will find out what the hell happened to our air support. However, I need your word as a soldier and an officer of the Federated Suns not to react violently against the Rimmers and their clanners.”

So this is what this was about, Canin seethed, as he balled his hands. “You have my word I will not lash out at our supposed allies, sir. Yet I don’t make any promises not to demand a Trial of Grievance for whoever screwed us royally over in the battle. Sir.”

Redburn nodded his head as he leaned against the comm table. “David was a good officer and a better soldier,” the general reminded him. “I won’t stop you from doing what you must, son. Just make sure you come to me so I can hammer out the details first to ensure no blow back comes your way from the Rimmers. Clear?”

Canin instinctively stood at attention. “Is that an order, sir,” he asked his superior.

â€œOnly if it needs to be, captain.”

â€œYes sir. May I be excused, sir,” Canin asked.

â€œIn a moment son. With David’s death, our ground component no longer has a commander. You’re it. I would usually say congratulations are in order, Major, but not after what happened today.”

   â€œYes, sir” Canin replied

â€œGet yourself cleaned up, you ship out tomorrow for All Dawn, you'll hook up with the FSS Zibler and the Warsaw.  You'll transfer to a civilian transport at Halfway and be re-routed to Arc Royal from there.  We'll begin recruiting efforts here.”

â€œYes, sir” Canin replied curtly before heading off Damien would keep an eye on the young McKinnon officer as well as many of the other members of their command.

Border Reinforcement
Draconis March, Federated Suns
22nd August 3096

With Sterling McKenna's defacto defection to the Federated Suns the Snow Ravens had communicated less and less with the Succession State and their traders had crossed the border far less.  To account for this cooling in the relationship between neighbours the AFFS had send four additional WarShips and three additional Regimental Combat Teams into the Draconis March stationing them within distance of worlds on the Raven Alliance border.  On top of this they assigned three more mercenary commands to the Crucis March worlds near by ready to jump to worlds attacked by the Ravens.  This additional firepower in the region had a by-product effect with  pirate raids in the region being far less effective.

Skada Ravine Memorial Centre
Megrez, Independent World
Former Free Worlds League
26th August 3096

The world of Megrez had benefited from the break-up of the Free Worlds League in ways similar to that of Bowang.  Situated between the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth, the Duchy of Tamarind-Abbey and the Lyran Commonwealth the system had become a place where the nations around it could meet, discuss their issues and trade goods.  Unlike Bowang the people of Megrez had no ambitions beyond their own world benefiting from the three nations around it being unwilling to make an offensive move on Megrez and those around it.

On Megrez there were several beautiful places for people to enjoy and explore one such place was the Skada Ravine on the northern continent.  During 3018 during the Third Succession War the Ravine on the northern continent had been the sight of a battle between the Marik Militia and forces of the Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces.  As with many battles of the Third Succession War the Battle of Skada Ravine had turned into a deadly close quarters brawl as both sides ran low on ammunition several of the Mechs had been destroyed by physical blows before the end of the fight.  In the years since the end of the Fourth Succession War the Skada Ravine Memorial Centre had been built as a reminder to the world that Megrez had a brutal past.

Unlike many worlds while Megrez past was brutal its present had been relatively peaceful leading to many visitors to the memorial centre especially through the planet's summer months, between July and October.  Making it the perfect target.  The Mauler BattleMech marched down the side of the grassed Ravine immediately missiles and autocannon fire slammed into the defenceless Memorial Centre.  A second and third salvo of fire slammed into the facility shattering walls and starting fire then as quickly as the Mauler had begun its attack the Mech executed a perfect turn and heading into the planet's countryside leaving the memorial centre to burn.

Several hours later as the Mech continued away from the destroyed Memorial Centre a green Marauder II stepped out ahead of the Mauler.  “MechWarrior halt!” the Warrior called out because of the distortion the Mauler pilot could not tell if it was a man or woman on board the Marauder II.

â€œDo you wish to die?” Gunther Dudsen asked looking over the Marauder it was bigger than his Mauler but the assault Mech was a tough Mech one that could take the beating that the Marauder could dish out.

â€œThat is a question that you should ask yourself, Mr Dudsen” the other MechWarrior replied as an Ebon Jaguar stepped out from the Mauler's left hand side while a Javelin walked out on the right and a VTOL buzzed overhead suddenly it was three Mechs and a vehicle against his Mech.

â€œI have many times” he replied concentrating on the Marauder II he knew the Mech, who didn't “am I your Bounty?”  He asked

â€œNot today, you haven't reached that level quite yet...”

   â€œThen why?”

â€œI'd like to help you reach that level” the Bounty Hunter replied “it's simple, you join us today and tomorrow you fight across the Inner Sphere.”

   â€œAnd if I don't?”

â€œThen we part ways with our best wishes for your future success.”  The pilot replied the Marauder II was not standing weapons ready to engage instead it simply blocked his path, the others were ready for a fight and in one the Javelin would easily be the best choice but then there was the offer.

â€œWhat would be my cut?”  He asked

â€œEqual share in what you are involved in”

â€œAnd should there be... collateral damage?”

â€œThe more the merrier, Herr Dudsen.”

â€œAnd I can go my own way if I choose at anytime?”

â€œWe'd prefer you stayed within our group but if you chose to leave you would not be stopped unless it was during a contract.”

â€œUnderstood” Dubsen replied “deal” he replied a moment later agreeing to the Bounty Hunter's terms, perhaps now he could extend the body count.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Nice update DC, only one thing, in this piece - To account for this cooling in the relationship between neighbours the AFFS had send four additional WarShips and three additional Regimental Combat Teams into the Draconis Combine stationing them within distance of worlds on the Raven Alliance border. shouldn't it be Draconis March?
