Gilfillan’s Gold, Rim Collection
Periphery
4th July 3099 Star Colonel Justine Truscott stood by the side of Galaxy Marshal Karen Able as they made small talk as both watched the Highlanders began to march out from their DropShip that had landed an hour ago under the rising sun of the cool morning on the Rim Collection’s capital planet of Gilfillan’s Gold, waiting to formally welcome the Highlanders to the Rim Collection. Able’s father had called in all the favors he could to the Northwind Highlanders for their Gurkha Battalion to come here and in the end he had to bribe them with Titan and Titan monitors; yet here they were to train her unit at last. As she watched the kilt-wearing dezgra mercs pile out of the DropShip, she continued the small talk with the Galaxy Marshal as she stretched her shoulders and arms, not yet used to the new uniforms. Able soon copied her motions.
Both were dressed in the new field uniforms of the Rim Collection, pants and jackets with camouflaged green and reds mixed in with dark red or green undershirts and green boots. The only differences in their uniform lay in their rank and unit badges and the headgear they were wearing; Able a standard field cap matching the camouflage of their uniforms and she a red beret signifying her as being Clan. Further behind them was the Monkey Khan, Aemelia Showers, who leaned against a tree as her arms were tucked across her chest, obviously still miffed to had to leave the Mandrill’s home on All Dawn for what she termed as welcoming potential enemies into the Collection. Justine for her part privately agreed with the aging Monkey Khan on that, if nothing else, these mercenaries could be dangerous to their future. Though she too wore the new field uniform, the old bitch, like many of the Fire Mandrills seemed to wear it with apathy. Stubbornly had refused to wear the required jacket, citing the informality of her clan and like all Fire Mandrills, she wore their dark red boots instead of the usual green ones all other units, even her own, wore. They stopped their small talk as the Northwind Highlander commander, complete in a kilt, strode up to them.
“Major William McCollum, First Gurkha Battalion, Northwind Highlanders, on assignment t' the Rim Collection as agreed with President Jerry Able, reporting as ordered Ma’am.†The Highlander man reported in what she was warned earlier in a Scottish drawl as he stood at attention and saluted them.
Galaxy Marshal Able and she both returned his salute with one of their own respectively as Justine caught sight of the solahma Monkey Khan rolling her eyes and lifted her hand from her chest just enough to form a two-fingered wave before bringing it back down to her chest. The man immediately fell into a ready stance as he clasped his hands behind his back, feet slightly apart.
Justine nodded to herself not expecting anything different from the dezgra mercenary. Mercenary he may be, but he was still a proud warrior, unlike the damn Monkeys she tolerated them purely because of their relationship with the Rim Collection and because of their current power. “We are happy your unit has arrived here on Gilfillan’s Gold, Major,†Galaxy Marshal Able started diplomatically. “Galaxy Marshal Karen Able of the First Rim Lancers and Star Colonel Justine Truscott of Clan Sphinx Raptor,†the other woman introduced them, not bothering to include the Monkey Khan, for she remained leaning against the tree. “She commands the unit you have been brought in to train, as a matter of fact.â€
By the tightening at the corner of the man’s lips, Justine knew the man was not at all happy. His next words confirmed it. “Forgive me, Galaxy Marshal, Star Colonel, but me and m' unit are t' train Rim Collection forces, not t' train Raptors.â€
“I said she commands the unit you were brought in to train, Major,†Justine noted the other woman’s eyes twinkle in mirth. “Rest assured her unit is and will be a combined unit, with members from the entirety of the Collection rather than just our local clans.â€
“The majority of my Rangers are Clansmen and women, however, Major. If this is a problem for you and or your unit, say so now so as we know where we stand with you and your dezgra warriors,†she remarked cuttingly to the Inner Sphere sell-warrior, who balled a hand into a fist. She smirked in satisfaction as she noted his reaction. Before she could reply, though, another feminine voice did, causing her to gulp.
“I trust the Highlanders to be as honorable an ally as they were an enemy when I fought them from my time as the last member of the Smoke Jaguars, Star Colonel Truscott. For the sake of your clan, do stop fanning the fire, so to speak, for the Major and his Highlanders will have enough problems with my own warriors,†Khan Aemelia Showers answered as she shrugged herself off her tree and walked the few steps to properly join them.
Justine was flabbergasted. Aemelia Showers, the Monkey Khan, known to be an ardent Crusader, had just paid this dezgra warrior in front of them a high complement in Clan society. By the reactions on both the Spheroids’ faces, both were just as shocked as she. Finally, Able seemed to have found her voice. “Well said, Khan Showers.â€
“So ye are the one who challenged and won a spot aboard a JumpShip from the Inner Sphere back t' your Homeworlds, lass?†Major McCollum asked, astonished to be facing the Clan woman who had shocked the Inner Sphere in her boldness in not only holding out for two years against his very own Highlander brothers and sisters by herself, but then had the audacity to demand and win a Trial of Possession for safcon back to the Clan Homeworlds, refusing to believe her clan had died. He was in front of a living legend as much as he was concerned. He continued after Aemelia answered him with a sharp nod of her head. “You were an honorable foe, Ma’am and the Jaguars were a courageous people.â€
All three were shocked when the Fire Mandrill snorted. “Misguided surats who had no idea how to be proper warriors, you mean Major.†She said smiling broadly “after all, we did ignite the fires of the reborn Star League into coming after us. Courageous, aff. Honorable, neg,†the elderly Khan rebuked him before shaking her head and muttering about facing her past as she began the walk back towards her own DropShip, which stood only a few hundred meters away from the Highlander’s own.
“One of these days, I’ll figure her out,†Able remarked as the three of them watched her go.
“Do not strain yourself, Galaxy Marshal,†Justine advised the older woman. “Even we Clanners do not understand the Mandrills at the best of times.â€
“True,†Able admitted. “Yet there is no other Clan I rather have at my side in battle. They on my right and yours on my left,†she added before Justine could take insult to her words. “And the Northwind Highlanders on my six,†she concluded as she and Justine turned back to the Highlander commander next to them. “Anyways, I and Star Colonel Truscott will escort you and your men and women to the primary base you all will be staying, Major. Tomorrow, the press would like…â€

“There has been assurances made if you are willing then it can happen.â€
“I am willing†Joseph admitted although he had no idea how he would convince his mother of the plan she was not a member of the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints nor was she a believer in a higher power.
