I'll be going back to the break away story - Foresight - soon but for now another update.

Meeting Room, Gulf Breeze Station
Gulf Breeze, Coventry Province
Lyran Commonwealth
14th September 3114

One wall of the meeting room was dominated by massive floor-to-roof screens that gave views outside of the Gulf Breeze Station giving the impression that they were looking out windows while infact they were deep inside the space station.  Commanding-General Victor Focht found the huge screens a little offputting but they did offer a spectacular view of the moon which the station was anchored to over Gulf Breeze Five and of the Star League Defence Force’s newest WarShip the SLS Indianapolis an eight hundred and thirty thousand ton vessel of a class with the same name.  The vessel was officially classed as a Heavy Cruiser but the SLDF planned to use it and its three sister ships the SLS Bon Accord, SLS Endurance and SLS Nathan Hale as training ships for the SLDF military.  The fact that the ships carried a significant amount of firepower and were capable of independent military operations was a fortunate coincidence.  Turning away from the view he looked at one of the administrators here on Gulf Breeze Dame Annie Christopher, she was in her eighties but a life in space without the stresses of planetary gravity or weather made her look twenty years younger, she was thin but muscular not gaunt, her skin was pale her hair still featuring its brown colour of her youth.  “An impressive vessel Commanding-General”

â€œYes, she is we’re quite pleased with it.”  He said “the Indianapolis will take up station at Swartklip along with its support vessels.  She will be a deep space training and patrol vessel.  During training future naval officers, DropShip crews and fighter pilots will be assigned to one of the Indianapolis-class vessels for on the job training.”

â€œA very large and well armed vessel for training operations.”  Annie Christopher noted most nations assigned training crews to far smaller vessels.

â€œYes, due to the areas these vessels will be deployed we decided to over engineer the vessel for its task.  If required these ships can assist Star League facilities, participate in fleet operations or remain independent.”  He explained “which leads to me to the reason we are here today.  We wish to purchase a Wheeler-class Station which will be assembled in the Swartklip system.”

â€œThat will not be an easy task” Annie Christopher said surprised by the idea the Wheeler-class was a common sight in the Gulf Breeze system but the reason for that was the station used to construct them was based here. “Commanding-General, the Wheeler-class Station is two hundred thousand tons in weight and they are over twelve hundred metres in width they cannot be jumped from system to system in one piece it takes a lot of preparation and work.”

â€œWe are aware however while there is a dozen in the Swartklip system that could fit our purposes they are currently being used for mining operations.  As the world is under SLDF protection we wish to show the people that we are willing to put in the leg work and provide them with the support that is needed.  Such a station will be a symbol of SLDF support for the system and for Gulf Breeze as we will be providing people in this system with jobs as well.”

â€œOnly two Wheeler-class stations are built a year inside the Spider.  Most of the time they are to replace aging stations that are coming to the end of their lives.  Building one for such a specialist operation will take significant time and money.”

â€œWhich the SLDF will be willing to help compensate you with and assist the LCAF in the Gulf Breeze system as well as Swartklip.  The SLS Tidesurge, an Antares-class Support Vessel, is assisting operations and maintenance of local stations in the Swartklip station.  We will detour them for one month in a year to Gulf Breeze where they will assist in an maintenance operations that are required.”  He suggested he knew that the LCAF would accept such support if the people on Gulf Breeze Station were happy with the assistance but he could tell that was not enough for Annie Christopher.  “Also given Gulf Breeze’s history dating back to the original Star League-era perhaps you could make room for a research team here on the station?”  He suggested “perhaps a dozen historical researchers plus support personnel and room for any visitors from the Swartklip garrison or Star League Command.  Room for two hundred personnel and research space?  The space and resources will be paid for by the Star League of course.”  He said suggesting the SLDF take on a permanent presence on the station and that they’d be willing to pay for it had the impact he was hoping for from Dame Annie Christopher the support the Tidesurge could offer the system wouldn’t hurt but the money, that’s what made the wheels move in this system.

â€œI think we could come to some sort of agreement there.”  Annie Christopher suggested “we’ve actually been developing a transportable version of the Wheeler for customers in the Commonwealth.”

â€œYou have? How fortunate” Victor muttered after all that they had some sort of solution waiting in the wings waiting for the right gullible customer, he wondered for a moment how many times the people on Gulf Breeze had pulled this kind of act.

â€œBecause of the potential support you could offer the Gulf Breeze system, and because you’ll be operating one of our stations in the future, perhaps it would be better if we provided you with something other than space?”  She suggested

   â€œOh yes?”

â€œHow about the SLDF take over one of the older Wheeler stations in the Gulf Breeze system?  It is a perfectly serviceable station, it would give your crews practical experience in using one of the Wheeler-class stations and will give your researchers access to Gulf Breeze Station whenever they need it.”

â€œAn interesting idea, and this older station would it be much different than the one you’d be building for us?”  Victor Focht asked wondering if the movable station was going to be completely different from the older model she was offering.

â€œI wouldn’t have thought so, our newer models are only different in how they are being constructed overall all Wheeler’s are very similar a flying gravity deck in space capable of housing ten thousand souls.”

â€œI think we can make something work.”  Victor said he wasn’t sure what the SLDF would do with all the space but having a base of operations separate from the Gulf Breeze Station would be helpful.  Until the station was operational in the Swartklip system the SLDF could at least use the base as a training hub. “I’ll detour the SLS Tidesurge to the system their crews can make sure the station is ready for our peoples needs what is the name of the station?”

â€œThe Myrtle Maud” Annie Christopher answered with a smile “some of the locals have called her Mad Maud due to some of her previous occupants, she’s about one hundred years old plenty life left in her, she’s about an hours 1G flight from here just outside the outer ring of Gulf Breeze Five.  She was upgraded with heavier armour a few years ago due to increased micro meteor impacts not due to any other issue.”

â€œWe’ll be assigning a Castrum-class DropShip to the system to act as a guard ship for her if anyone did think about causing issues, along with a marine force.”  Victor said wondering if micro-meteor impacts were all they’d have to worry about.  With an entire station for their use they could use it as a training base, combining operations on Swartklip, Gulf Breeze and the SLS Indianapolis to create an SLDF hub out here.  It would take some convincing with command and the council be he was sure he could sell it.

â€œThey’ll be welcome visitors” Annie Christopher said without hesitation knowing that the additional personnel working through the system would bring even more revenue into the system.  Victor Focht turned back towards the screen wall and looked at the Indianapolis he’d come to see the ship to its new assignment and to hopefully buy a new station.  It looked like he’d somehow gotten two stations and was well on his way to building a new Training Hub in Lyran space.

Capellan Confederation Re-organisation
Victoria, Victoria Commonality
Capellan Confederation
22nd September 3114

The Capellan Confederation add several more worlds to their periphery region recolonizing several worlds abandoned over the years and resetablishing contact with worlds that had simply be left to fend for themselves.  Not all the worlds peacefully accept Capellan rule again but few have a choice when faced against the military forces of the CCAF.  The Capellan Confederation also reorganise their internal workings with the world of Victoria re-established as a Commonality Capital splitting world from the Andurien Commonality and in a deal with the Taurian Concordat the Capellan Confedration take over the systems of Mendham, Robstart and Horsham in exchange for resources, enough BattleMechs to equip an entire regiment and three Shoung Bi Shou-class Corvettes.

The Capellans moving further into the Taurian sphere of influence focuses the Taurians on House Davion instead of the nation continuously watching for further Clan Nova Cat intrusions.  The WarShips also give the nations additional security to a nation that has spend vast resources on attempting to build such vessels themselves and been knocked down each time by external threats, while the regiment of Mechs allows them to form three additional Taurian Hussar combined-arms regiments strengthening two of their regional forces.

Chaos Irregulars Basecamp
Molokai, District of Bowang
Free Worlds League
23rd September 3114

The basecamp of the Chaos Irregulars on Molokai was a quiet place when Naomi Wrangler arrived which was quite strange, the world of Molokai was deep inside the Free Worlds League but normally mercenary bases were loud places here everything appeared to be quite subdued, the Chaos Irregulars were just going around their day to day business.  Her vehicle was challenged at the gate by some infantry troopers and she was directed to the visitor’s car park beside the command building.  The building itself looked ancient and probably had been on the planet since humans colonized Molokai.  She was again pleased when she was challenged by more of the Chaos Irregulars infantry at the entrance to the building, when it was confirmed she was expected she was given a visitor pass and directed into the reception area.  While they were not loud or typical of mercenary commands she’d encountered, her own Thunder Road included, but they were at least professional.

Inside in stark contrast to the outside she found the reception to be a well set out modern office, which had obviously been renovated into the old building at some point she doubted it had been done by the Irregulars and she found it to be a shame considering the history of the building something more traditional would be better, regardless as she entered the young man at the desk rose with a smile he was well dressed in a white shirt and blue tie.  Given what she’d seen of the Irregulars military uniform she assumed that this was a local civilian hire the Irregulars had made.  It was the nature of the mercenary life each place commands went they tended to hire a couple of dozen civilians to assist with administration, help keep the base clean and about a hundred different tasks that the mercenaries just didn’t have the personnel for.  “Good morning Lt Colonel Wrangler” the man said he’d obviously been made aware of her arrival “I have made Colonel Peregrine-Simpson aware of your arrival she is currently inspecting an issue we’ve found with one of the BattleMechs.  She should be ready for your appointment soon.”  He explained.

â€œI’m actually here to see Colonel Chowla” she explained the man looked surprised “I believe my appointment with Colonel Simpson is later, I arrived early for a personal visit.”  She said since seeing Jake Chowla on Bowang Wrangler had been worried about him and decided to check in on the grieving co-leader of the Chaos Irregulars.

â€œOf course, my apologies Lt Colonel” the young man said “at present Jake is… not in the office”

â€œI know” Wrangler added “Colonel Simpson made me aware of his condition, I’ll see him in his quarters.”  She explained the receptionist looked surprised but quickly checked the permissions and saw she had been cleared.

â€œOf course his room is on the third floor fourth room on the right, I will make Colonel Simpson aware you have arrived.”

â€œThank you” she said spying a jug of water on the desk “may I borrow that?”  She asked the man looked at the jug then back at Wrangler before picking it up and handing it over.

â€œOf course, I’ll just fetch you a pair of glasses” he said turning around opening a cupboard by the time he’d turned back towards where Wrangler had been with the glasses she was gone.

---

The third floor almost felt like a hotel instead of a military base with several rooms set out either side of the main stairwell and lifts.  Naomi Wrangler reached Jocoam Chowla’s room and knocked after a few moments without an answer she knocked again and then a third time “Jake!”  She called out trying to get his attention.  Towards the end of the corridor another member of the Irregulars came out of their room to head to their duties.  Instead of causing any further scene Naomi Wrangler reached into her jacket pocket and produced a magnetic pass flicking it over the lock on the right side of the door.  The magnetic lock flicked off and the door popped open.

Entering the room Naomi heard the gingle and chink of several cans and bottles hitting each other as she pushed the door open.  Jake Chowla’s personal quarters were a mess even in the darkness of the room she could see dozens of bottles and cans laying on the floor.  Sprawled on the bed still wearing his kaki coloured work overalls laid Colonel Jocoam Chowla a bottle of local wine propped up on the pillow beside him.  “Wakey, Wakey! Colonel, rise and shine it’s time to go to work!”  She shouted but he didn’t move.  “Jake, get up!”  She shouted using his name this time he moved when she spoke but still remained crashed out on the bed.  “You’ll thank me later” she said raising the jug of water and in one fluid motion emptying the iced cold water over the sleeping man.

The reaction to being hit by the cold water was immediate and as Naomi had expected violent Jake leapt from the bed the wine bottle suddenly in his hand.  Naomi didn’t wait instead she grabbed his incoming arm and used his drunken momentum against him ducking as she flipped him over her shoulder.  Jocoam Chowla flew over her shoulder and slammed fully into the bottles and cans that littered the floor with an audible crash.  Within a moment of the crash the Irregular that Naomi had seen before was at the door his hand on his sidearm.  “Move on soldier, nothing to see here” Naomi said looking up at him flashing her visitor pass as she grabbed Jake’s arm and dragged the hulk of a man to the bathroom.

Within a moment Jocoam Chowla was laying in the shower under a constant stream of water.  “Wake up Jake!  Time to do some work.”  She said to him even though he wasn’t looking at him.

â€œNot funny Aletha” he mumbled under his breath.

â€œI’m not your wife Jake” Naomi Wrangler said sorrowfully knowing the loss he felt, she’d lost her mother three years before to pneumonia she, and her father, still felt her loss today.  “I’m sorry” she said refering to his loss not the wake up call.  She’d seen her father go through bouts of this since their collective loss.  “It’s Naomi Wrangler, from Bowang, I came here looking to see if you wanted a job?”

â€œChaos Irregulars are out of the market of doing other ******** work.”  Jake cursed looking at her.

â€œYou need to get back to work Colonel, it’s the only way.”

â€œI don’t need to do anything!” He snapped “I don’t need to do anything for anyone every again!”  She said his anger boiling over.

â€œYes you do” another voice said from behind Naomi, she turned to see the other Co-Commander of the Chaos Irregulars Colonel Ariel Peregrine-Simpson.  She was close to Jake’s age she had a slightly lighter skin tone and a far lighter build.  “We need you Jake” she said looking down at the man who still laid in the shower “and the Irregulars need the work” she said addressing Wrangler “I can send a battalion to support your efforts Colonel Wrangler, we’ll keep our other battalion here for refit and continued training.”

â€œI believe my Thunder Road will welcome your presence.”  She said reaching over switching off the shower.  “Colonel Chowla, ready for work?”  Naomi said reaching down to haul him up.

â€œHe will be, I’ll give you a hand?”  Ariel suggested

â€œAgreed, I’m sure the first of many ventures.”  She said as the two women pulled the soaked Jocoam Chowla out of the shower.  This was far from being the solution to his problems but an important first step.  While the contract with The Thunder Road would get the Irregulars back on the market and back to work.

Pirate Raid
Whittington, Periphery
30th September 3114

â€œWhat on earth have you done to that UrbanMech?”  Schuyler McCoy asked standing in the Mechbay looking up at the thirty ton BattleMech, much maligned across the known human sphere the UrbanMech was horribly slow for a light BattleMech but what it lacked in speed it made up in Mech killing firepower often carrying an assault autocannon.  This particular BattleMech however looked a lot different unlike the stubby arms of a standard UrbanMech this one’s arms extended at least half way down its barrel like torso with a pair of lasers extending out of the end.  Out of the torso jutted two boxy rocket launchers which extended above the shoulders while two more lasers extended from the lower chest.

â€œPieter’s autocannon was destroyed so we replaced it with a new weapons suite.  Four medium lasers, two light particle cannons and two rocket launchers.  It gives it a little better weapons coverage and it looks visibly different.” Matthew Yingling the McCoy’s Malcontents head technician explained.

â€œIt’s a dramatic change it looks almost like you were trying to recreate something…” he suggested thinking of a particularly famous and heavier BattleMech.

â€œMaybe a little bit, it was a suggestion from our newest tech.”  He said just as Amanda Cavalcanti appeared from behind the UrbanMech on the access gantry, the captured MechWarrior had been working for the unit over the last month or so and from all of Yingling’s accounts she’d fit in well with the techs.  McCoy waved at her to come down.

After a few minutes she was stood beside him she was covered in grease and dust but he could see that since she had come to Whittington she’d cut her hair shorter so it only reached her shoulders and she’d coloured it a darker red which in McCoy’s opion suited her.  “Any explaination?”

â€œThe autocannon was damaged beyond repair and you didn’t have anything spare, we’d have only gotten another autocannon by ripping it off one of your historical Mechs which I thought we were supposed to be restoring not ripping apart?”

   â€œAnd the appearance?”

â€œWell at range it could scare someone who doesn’t know better.”  Amanda suggested “given the ECM suite you put on my old Ebony Snake could hide it from sensors.  You could put this thing at long range with an enemy, shield it with ECM and give them a scare.”  She said explaining thinking behind it.

â€œAnd when they close and we don’t have a Mad Cat?”

â€œWell it can fight better too, the PPCs give better range and the mediums are a better back up every day of the week than the small laser the others have.”  She argued McCoy looked up at the Mech and shook his head.

â€œAn UrbanMech pretending to be a Mad Cat” he smirked “I’ve heard of crazy things but this possibly takes the biscuit.”  Suddenly an alarm cut off their conversation and McCoy’s communicator bleeped. “What is it?”

â€œWe’ve got an incoming Leopard DropShip they’ll arrive tomorrow.” The communications officer reported.

â€œWe’ll be ready” he said turning to Amanda “you’d fight with that on the field?”  He asked looking at the weird UrbanMech.

   â€œYes”

â€œAnd you’d fight with us?”  He asked they were officially a pirate unit, they would in the future raid other worlds for supplies but Schuyler McCoy hoped they’d showed her over the last few months they weren’t bad people.

â€œYes” Amanda answered again she didn’t agree with stealing supplies from others but the world of Whittington was alone in the universe and they needed to gather resources any way they could, and she had seen the good in these people.

â€œThen your fighting tomorrow, your Ebony Snake is repaired and ready for a fight.  It’s time to defend your new home.”

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Time for a new bit with some news from the Raven Alliance - from Vition2

Hope you enjoy both our contributions

Pirate Raid
Whittington, Periphery
1st October 3114

With such a short period to prepare the McCoy’s Malcontents only had the nine active BattleMechs prepared for combat.  Schuyler McCoy’s command lance had engaged the Marian forces once already taking out two enemy BattleMechs, an entire platoon of armoured vehicles and several Battle Armoured troopers before being forced to disengage.  Now they were cycling around behind the enemy forces to cut off their retreat while the UrbanMech lance augmented by Amanda Cavalcanti’s repaired Ebony Snake stood in the enemies’ way.  She’d positioned her ultralight BattleMech out of sight along with the three-regular looking UrbanMechs while Pieter Von Cleef took centre stage in his Mad Cat inspired UrbanMech.  The strange looking Mech shrouded by Amanda’s ECM suite made the enemy forces pause at long range long enough for Schuyler McCoy’s forces to catch and engage the raiders.  Now the UrbanMech lance was approaching their targets and engaging the enemy forces Pieter opened fire with both his rocket launchers and particle cannons revealing his UrbanMech’s firepower at range but Amanda held fire her ultralight only had the two rocket launchers, a sword and the handheld held triple machine gun.  Instead she watched as Pieter’s firepower rippled over a Marian Hegemony Cataphract BattleMech at seventy tons the Mech weathered the hits and took both particle cannons then a pair of laser shots without flinching.  The seventy-ton BattleMech twisted its torso to face them and opened fire with its arm mounted ultra autocannon which tore into Pieter’s BattleMech.  Fortunately, while UrbanMechs were slow they were well armoured and Pieter didn’t miss a step as he marched forwards.  The Cataphract opened fire again this time turning to face them fully engaging with its LB-class autocannon and lasers as well, unfortunately for the pilot he thought he was better than he was and tried to engage multiple targets at once.  The autocannon fired cluster ammunition at the Malcontents Mechs causing light damage while of the four lasers fired only one hit one of the four UrbanMechs each of which was shrouded by Amanda’s ECM suite.

The response from the UrbanMech lance was devastating three autocannons erupted into fire adding their firepower to Pieter’s particle cannons and Amanda’s rockets.  Amanda was glad to see her rockets mostly hit their target while one of Pieter’s particle cannons and both lasers also connected with the larger Mech.  Two of the three autocannons found their mark and explosive shells tore across their chassis causing multiple small explosions along the way.  The MechWarrior tried to maintain his balance but it was clear to see that his Mech needed to retreat and was outmatched by the entire lance of light Mechs.  An assault Mech may have been able to stand but not a single Cataphract as the Mech toppled Pieter hit it again with both particle cannons as it fell causing more damage as the large Mech slammed into the ground ripping up the Wittington grass.  Running in past the UrbanMechs Amanda shot the Mech with her triple machine gun carried weapon as she closed before dropping it as she got to point blank range.  At this close range she struck the downed Mech with her Ebony Snake’s sword she struck down with the weapon cutting into the Cataphract’s back as the three other UrbanMechs pounded the Mech again with several heavy autocannon blasts which shredded several of the enemy Mech’s actuators causing further issues for the downed warrior.

The fallen Marian MechWarrior must have known the game was up.  As he signaled to them his surrender and powered down the Cataphract before something else went wrong and the BattleMech suffered a catastrophic failure.  Turning her Mech around Amanda picked up the machine gun weapon and scanned the area sighting a group of Ravager Battle Armour units.  She ran towards them spraying her targets with machine gun fire.  Despiter her Ultralight Mech’s small frame she still towered over the Battle Armoured troopers and a constant stream of machine gun fire, combined with the approaching UrbanMechs was enough to cause these troopers to surrender along with their fallen Cataphract comrade.  Amanda loved being back in her BattleMech, despite only being able to contribute small amounts, she was a MechWarrior again.  The surrender of the three Ravager troopers turned out to be the last part of the battle on Wittington one more Mech, the Marian’s heaviest, a Highlander raised its arms in surrender following the dispatching of its comrades and with that it was over.  The Highlander, the remains of seven other Mechs, three intact Ravager Battle Armour suits and enough to rebuild another one or two, along with half a dozen light vehicles made for a decent haul for the Malcontents.  The Marian DropShip boosted back towards orbit on hearing of the fall of their ground forces leaving their people to their fate.  The Malcontents threw the lot of the survivors into the stockade to allow them to think about their failures Schuyler McCoy told Amanda that he might allow them to join his ranks like she had but they’d have to earn their place within the unit just as she had.

---

Hours later Amanda Cavalcanti relaxed in the small quarters she’d been given in the manor.  The room was little more than a box with a single bed against the left side wall a small bedside table and a chair.  It small and basic but it was, unlike the shared quarters she’d had when she was a tech, exclusively hers and when she was inside, she could shut the door and be herself.  After the battle she’d retreated to the showers then straight to her quarters to rest up, dressing only in a white tank top and ripped off shorts she laid out on top of her bed as there was a knock on the door.

â€œCome in” she called when the door did not immediately open.  The door slowly opened and in stepped Schuyler McCoy he was dressed in a simple olive drab jumpsuit his short blonde hair bouncing slightly.  From his appearance she could tell he’d also taken a shower and he’d taken time to tidy up his one vanity his hair.  In his hand he held a refillable bottle which was no doubt filled with some sort of energy drink.

â€œYou did well today” he said remaining at the door

â€œThank you, it was nice to be back in the saddle I’m glad I had the opportunity to defend my new home.”

â€œWe won’t always defend places; my unit have taken responsibility for this world but we also are on the look out to make a profit.  If that means we have to break some heads and take someone else stuff we will.”  He warned her she silently nodded “you think you’re up for that?”

â€œI won’t kill innocents.”  She warned him “I’ll draw a line under that and if I witness it, I.. don’t know if I could stay in the unit.”  She said making her point clear “but taking what we need, I think I can do, life isn’t exactly easy out here and we’d be helping the people here.”

â€œWe would, I won’t leave another person to die due to us taking things from them, but we will do what we need to when people resist our attempts to take from them.  For those who don’t resist and don’t interfere I’ll try to promise we won’t kill anyone who doesn’t need to be killed.

â€œI’ll hold you to that.”  She promised him

â€œGood, now to business” he said taking a drink from the bottle smirking “the capture of the Highlander adds a nice option to our next move.  I’m keeping the Archer and not surprisingly Morgan is keeping his Blackjack, it’s an OmniMech after all, so I’m giving the Highlander to Tom.”  He said naming a couple of the other members of his command lance.  “After your little modification work on his UrbanMech Pieter has decided he is keeping his Mech so I’m giving Faris Tom’s old Vindicator.”  He said naming another member of the unit she’d piloted one of the autocannon UrbanMechs that had forced the Cataphract pilot to surrender.  “Now I don’t think you’re the type to want a UrbanMech as your ride?”  After a moment’s thought Amanda shook her head, she’d rather keep a Mech half its weight than pilot a walking tin can like an UrbanMech.  “I didn’t think so, instead I’ve ordered the Techs to bring online the old Griffin, its not perfect, not by a long shot a lot of its gear is primitive tech but with what we captured today you and the Techs might be able to do something with it?”  He asked she nodded her agreement.  “Good, I’ll release it to you, you’ll still be attached to the UrbanMechs for now, you’re not getting out of that assignment just yet, I’m going to make sure that Matt sinks an ECM into the Griffin so you can still shield that monstrosity of an UrbanMech that Pieter is piloting.”

â€œI understand, their mostly good folks” she said

â€œMost of the unit are, just ignore Hector and you’ll be fine” he warned her “I’ll find someone to pilot your Ebony Snake and you can mentor them in the Griffin.  I want them to be able to take over from you once you move up.”
â€œI can do that, it’s a good little Mech.”

â€œIt’s not bad, but now you’re in something a lot bigger, learn your new Mech’s limitations don’t think you can run around with it like the Snake understood?”  He asked she nodded again as he swiped another drink from his bottle.  “Very good” he said giving her the once over with his eyes “as you were” he said after a moment of lingering then the realization he’d been caught.  “Drink plenty fluids the come down after combat can be tough.” He warned Amanda reached over to the table and grabbed her own bottle.

â€œWell ahead of you, Captain” she said drinking a little seeing his uncomfortable look on his face at the rank “Duke?”  She asked given his position on the world following his father’s actions in the past in taking up the challenge to defend the world, giving him the title seemed to make Schyler McCoy look queasy “boss?” she asked quickly moving on he nodded “I won’t let you down.”

â€œI’m glad to hear it, with the Highlander and Griffin added to our ranks we’re going to be running around with a lot more firepower and capabilities so we’ll have to all get used to working together in a different way.”  He explained “I haven’t even thought about what we’re going to do with the Ravagers or vehicles yet, I guess some of the locals might want an adventurous future… we’ll see.  For now, we’ll keep them here and we can roll them out when we’ve got people up to the task.”

â€œThe Cemetery Wind held a national contest, fitness and mental agility assessed to see who was up for the task.  But they had the support of the planetary government.”  She said suggesting how she ended up with her old unit.

â€œNothing here to support us.  Just a bunch of little settlements that don’t have the money to pay us and instead turn over food and drink as payment.”  He said while his unit were classed as a pirate unit beyond this planet most people considered them to be their guardians on planet as the only armed force.  “I’m not sure how many of them will want to turn over their sons and daughters but we’ll see.”

â€œYou could force it; you have the firepower.”  She suggested “or maybe form a planetary defence force… Duke” she suggested smirking when she saw him squirm under the title.  Schyler stood there for a moment then left without another word obviously having plenty to think about.  Amanda didn’t exactly know what she thought of her new commander, she missed her friends in Cemetery Wind but also felt like she could make an impact here.

---

Regardless how Schyler felt Amanda couldn’t wait until the morning when she headed down to the Mechbay to see her “new” Griffin even the horrible rainstorm outside would not dash her hopes for a good day.  She’d spend a good portion reading up on the medium Mech learning what it was capable she knew most of the basics fifty-five tons, capable of running nearly one hundred miles per hour and jumping one hundred and eighty metres.  Primarily they were armed with particle cannons and missiles good solid weapons.

When she’d arrived in the Mech hanger under Schyler’s house she noticed the Mech seemed to have more missile pods than she’d expected but then it was a rebuilt Mech it would likely be armed with what the techs had available she’d adapt.  Climbing aboard the BattleMech she half crawled into the cramped blocky cockpit, as Schyler had said this was a primitive Mech, she’d have to get used to some differences.  Sitting in the command chair she began powering up the BattleMech feeling the fusion engine begin to pur under her.  Drawing her neuralhelmet over her head once she was strapped in, she heard the familiar start up voice.  Technicians preferred transferring a pilot’s neuralhelmet from one Mech to another to help the pilot connect with the machine quicker and more smoothly, starting from scatch tended to take hours.

â€œGriffin G-R-F-1-A online, fusion engine online, particle cannon online, small laser online, small laser online, machine gun online, rocket launcher ten-pack loaded, rocket launcher ten pack loaded, Guardian Electronic Counter Measure Suite active.”  The voice said in rapid succession giving her a rundown of her connected weapons she’d had the same on the Ebony Snake but it was a far shorter list on the fifteen-ton BattleMech.  The Griffin also seemed to be over gunned for what she’d expected glancing at her control board she pressed through the menus which were familiar but slower than most Mechs she stopped when she got to the stats of her BattleMech.

â€œSixty tons…” she whispered looking at the stats that was wrong she thought the Griffin was five tons lighter “sixty-four mph?”  She thought that can’t be right.  She tabbed through several more menus until she got to the Mech’s datasheet.  Maxwell Manufacturing Inc. Procyon, Date of construction November 2nd 2466…  She read the words and numbers and suddenly understood her Mech was nearly five hundred years old, one of the first Griffins to be constructed, she was inside an antique.  Most MechWarriors who inherited an older BattleMech received a machine that was older than them but few on the battlefield would be as old as this one.  The techs had refitted the old weapons and armour but it still had an ancient chassis, engine, cockpit and a jury-rigged gyro which was heavier than the standard models.  “Well, we’re going to have fun.”  She said seeing the light opposite her bay go green clearing her way to leave the Mechbay.  Amanda took control of the Griffin and stepped it clear of the cradle that held it in position.  The Mech took a couple of heavy steps forward before she pivoted it to the right and walked it out of the bay and into the rainstorm that was lashing the building.  She felt and heard the rain and wind batter her BattleMech but the sixty-ton machine stood firm.  Even though they’d only walked a few steps together Amanda felt she was ready for the next challenge that was thrown her way.

High Council Chambers
Dante, Raven Alliance
3rd October, 3114

Despite the Raven Alliance’s capital being housed on Alpheratz the Snow Ravens held Dante exclusively for their own operations.  Here unlike Alpheratz, which still held many of its old prejudices, a Snow Raven could walk down the street without any concern all of the population were completely indoctrinated into the Snow Raven belief system.  The change on Alpheratz and across the Raven Alliance would come it would just take a little more time and convincing for now Dante was the Raven capital and held all their command and coordination centres.

Deep within one of these command centres held a the Clan Council’s grand hall designed along the lines of all the other Clan Council chambers with the Clan’s unique brand of angular architecture with every surface seemingly moving at an angle to the other the room was a theatre capable of holding several hundred of the Snow Raven’s Bloodnamed warriors, the elite leaders of the Clan, and had enough holographic and audio technology to keep everyone informed regardless of where they were seated in the chamber.

In the centre of the room the primary holotable, which was several metres wide squared, showed the typical Raven tactical grid for space combat blown up to a size that allowed the text displayed to be read from anywhere in the room.  Centrally located on the displayed image is a small cluster of mid-sized white dots a few smaller ones can be seen planetward, with trajectories to intercept the white dots, these glow a brilliant golden in color.  As time progresses a smaller group of white dots emerge from the cluster to intercept the golden ones.  As the two groups merge a couple golden dots wink out, but most of the white ones also disappear, with only a few remaining continuing their trajectories.  The remaining gold dots slow and merge with the central cluster shortly before the feed stops.

Watch Commander Riven steps to the front of the gathered High Alliance Military Council.  “The captain of the RAS Silver Star ejected a small transceiver towards the end of this raid in Millary.  Which we recovered a couple days ago after failing to receive progress reports on the shipment.  As some of you may know, the convoy included a number finished products we were trading to the Nova Cats for a large amount of raw materials.  Their recent conflict with the Suns showing some strain on certain parts of their economy, which we specialize in.”

He went on to explain that the golden color was designated as Federated Suns on the Sphere Wide IFF code database.  While somehow the audio was jammed the transceiver included a description of the assaulting force which included an Arondight-class DropShip, along with a number of other aerospace fighters and DropShips iconic to the Suns’ military.  Then he stepped back to allow Khan Vir Sukhanov to lead the rest of the meeting.

The Khan stepped forward, those who knew him well can see the strain in his features, though he puts on a well composed front, “This is among our worst-case scenarios, the Federated Suns has many more resources than the Combine.  Though the Suns have benefited greatly from our scouring of their periphery pirates, yet they still seek to test us.”  Grumbles of agreement come from the 20 current members of the Raven Alliance’s High Military Council.
“We cannot let this attack go without response!”  Gamma Galaxy Commander Adrian Chand exclaimed, the elemental's voice booming across the chamber.

The lithe form of Alessa Alpheratz, the Long Road’s GalCom, rises, “Our response must be measured, we can’t treat them like the Dragons, the Suns have fewer internal issues, and greater resources.  Even their naval forces can rival our own.”
Discussions continue for the next few hours, the normal bloodhouse politicking significantly decreased emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, before Khan Sukhanov calls for its end in order to mull over many of the options brought up.  Only two solid goals came from the council: Millray must be secured, and the Federated Suns must be punished.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The next evening, the Khan meets with the Watch Commander, the Dante sunset streaming into the glasscrete windows.
“Riven, I have decided on a course of action, but much of it requires a bit of... delicacy.  We will not be able to manage this conflict truly alone, so I’ll need you to make sure a couple of messages get to the right people.”  The Khan began.
“I will do my best,” the masked Watch Commander replied.

“There are three components to this, first, we’ll need to make the Combine aware of the situation, we should use our Nexus Ri connection for this.  The Nova Cats should be pretty straightforward to convince, the supplies in that convoy were going to shore up some of their economic deficits, and we suspect that may put them behind schedule by a year, maybe more.”

“The last component...” A knock occurs at the door, and Vir’s mouth makes a small smile, “Perfect timing... Enter!”
Galaxy Commander Long Roads enters, “Khan Sukhanov, you requested me?”

The Khan nods, “Yes, Alessa, we have need of you and your galaxy.  You will work with Riven in order to...”  The three of them work together on their plans late into the night.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

A bit more than a week later, the Hazelhurst PDZ director gives a large press release in which a short statement acknowledging the attack and surreptitiously apologizing for it is buried within, but also relating the recent conflict with the Nova Cats.  No overtures are made directly to the Alliance.  Within the Alliance, a number of units begin either redeploying or preparing for a redeployment.

Border Conflict
Federated Suns
8th October 3114

Despite having one of the best equipped militaries in the Inner Sphere after months of continuous combat on multiple fronts were causing visible cracks in the Federated Suns defences.  On every march border the Federated Suns came under attack as the Draconis Combine pushed deep into the Draconis March attacking Hoff, Bettendorf, Franklin, Lucerne and Rochester shattering elements of the First Robinson Rangers and First New Ivaarsen Chasseurs with additional raids on New Ivaarsen and Sakhara V intended on tying up defenders but actually netting the Draconis Combine Sakhara as DCMS forces overwhelm the training academy and the militia supporting it.  In the New Ivaarsen system only the presence of the FSS Ian Davion repulses the DCMS raiding force with the Mercury-class Battleship shattering the invading forces’ DCS Tsukushi, a Tatsumaki II-class Destroyer, driving the DCMS forces from the system.  While it is unlikely the DCMS could hold all of these worlds for an extended period of time this sailent provides the DCMS with a temporary and somewhat tenous threat against the system of Robinson.

On the Periphery borders of the Crucis March Clan Nova Cat continue to cause issues with the defences of the Crucis March forcing their way into the Ebro and Memphis systems again strengthening their strike corridor into the Federated Suns.  The AFFS strike back against the Clan retaking the systems of Minette, Molino, Maram, Sodertalke, Olindo and Adelson opening a second front against the Nova Cats and essentially shattering the Clan’s Zeta Galaxy which had personnel in each system targeted.  With only the Forty-ninth Nova Cat Roar Cluster surviving intact as it retreated from the Maram system Nova Cat command orders Zeta Galaxy once again stricken from the rolls and the Cluster rolled into Sigma Galaxy.  As a further insult to the Clan Federated Suns news sources report that the former New Avalon embassy occupied by Clan Nova Cat has been burned to the ground during a protest by Avalon City residence.  The base has not been occupied for several years following tensions between Clan Nova Cat and the Federated Suns.

During the hostilities on their other borders the Capellan Confederation and Taurian Concordat combine forces and attack the systems of Shaunavon, Wrentham, Flintoff and Ridgebrook.  In each case the Capellans and Taurians find the defences in the Capellan March of the Federated Suns unprepared after years of peace.  On Kathil Duchess Kym Hasek is put under pressure by March Dukes to explain why she has supported other parts of the Federated Suns over her own March.  With internal issues now also boiling over inside the Suns it ends a bad month for the Federated Suns.

Trial of Possession
Zosma, Wolf Empire
18th October 3114

The Star League Defence Force had returned in force to Zosma intent on wresling control of the world from Clan Wolf.  Instead of charging into combat the SLDF had challenged the Wolves defending the world to a Trial of Possession, using the Clan honour system against them, the Nineteenth Wolf BattleMech Cluster had agreed to the Trial and the Clan rite of Safcon allowing the SLDF to make their way safely to the planet’s surface.  The veteran Fourth Knights of the Sphere Regimental Brigade supported by the Second Hessen Irregulars Mercenary regiment had landed on the world supported by three SLDF WarShips which faced off against two Wolf vessels in a stand off.  With the Trial of Possession agreed the WarShips would stand guard but were forbidden from getting involved in the battle for the planet.

Sitting in the cockpit of his Shirke OmniMech Major Morgan Christifori paced the other BattleMech in the Trial force was they waded their way through an untamed grass field heading towards the Wolf force.  Due to his knowledge of Clan practices General Hadassah Sadira had given him a position on the force and he did not plan on letting her or his new unit down.

As they entered weapons range challenges were being shouted across both lines as Wolves and SLDF warriors picked their targets.  Following the challenges weapons fire followed almost immediately with the two lines of forces connected by autocannon salvos, flights of missiles, man-made lightning of particle cannons and lasers.  Immediately several Mechs on both sides took heavy damage but Morgan walked through the fire without a scratch, without a single challenger, as he walked forwards a Warwolf stepped into his path.  The seventy-five-ton OmniMech was new to the Wolf Touman, twenty tons lighter than his Mech and slightly faster it carried significant firepower “I am Star Captain Terrence Kerensky of Clan Wolf, I challenge the MechWarrior of the stavag piloting the Shirke OmniMech to a Circle of Equals, may no other interfere in our battle.”  He said

“I am Major Morgan Christifori, I won this Shirke in battle against the Jade Falcons in a battle of honour, I accepted your challenge Wolf.”  Morgan transmitted in response as the two began their dance the rest of the battle continued around them with Mechs and their warriors dying on both sides but they were only background noise to the two duelling MechWarriors.

Morgan engaged his Shirke’s jump jets launching his ninety-five-ton Mech into the air.  His jump was assisted by the Shirke’s partial wings which gave him superior control in flight allowing the Mech to glide further than the jump jets would carry him.  He used the increased control and his Shirke’s advanced targeting computer to launch an ariel attack to hammer the Warwolf with his Hyper Assault Gauss Rifle which spat out metal slugs at supersonic speeds causing massive kinetic damage to the Warwolf’s torso and arm.  The Wolf warrior returned fire with his weapons long range missiles, a particle cannon and laser.  A BattleMech being his as it preformed a jumping maneuver could result in a fatal crash due to the sudden change in weight and balance from an enemy assault Morgan was braced for the attack but was glad to see the manmade lightning from the particle cannon sail past his Mech missing its mark.  The laser burned up the inside of his Shirke’s left leg but didn’t penetrate the armour while the long-range missiles slammed into the Shirke’s left arm.  Nothing critical Morgan thought as he rebalanced the machine coming into a landing touching his jump jets to slow the fall as he did.  Ninety-five tons of man and machine landing on the ground was every “soft” but with the jump jets and wings assisting the Shirke landed with a thunderous thud flattening a patch of burning grass and throwing up sand into the air.  The Shirke didn’t miss a beat running out of the thrown-up sand Mogan heard the ping of a lock on from his missiles and immediately fired the short-range missiles launching from the launcher situated above his Mech’s right wrist.  As the smoke around him cleared Morgan ran into a volley of short-range missiles fired by the Warwolf pilot and then the following combination of lasers and pulse lasers which burned into the Shirke’s torso armour.  Morgan glanced at his sensor display and saw the Warwolf standing off to his right-hand side twisting the Shirke’s torso he let rip with both large lasers mounted there not waiting to see the two green beams strike the enemy Mech Morgan brought the left arm HAG around and opened fire with another stream of fire hitting the enemy Mech all over.

The devastation wrought on the seventy-five-ton Mech was brutal with armour lost on almost every surface of the OmniMech Morgan thought he saw one of the lasers explode under the attack but couldn’t be certain.  To his credit the Warwolf pilot did not loose his footing nor did he stop his assault attacking the Shirke with his particle cannon and a collection of lasers as the two Mechs continued to dance around each other.  Unlike the missed aerial shot this time the particle cannon slammed into the Shirke’s torso burning away almost a ton of armour.  Of the other lasers fired only one pulse laser hit striking the Shirke’s left leg causing nothing more than armour damage.

It took a lot to kill a ninety-five-ton OmniMech advancements of technology over the years had made it possible for Mechs to carry more armour while still carrying as much firepower as some small conventional armies.  Continuing their dance, the two machines continued to trade blows the Warwolf hitting the Shirke with its missiles and laser combination while Morgan struck back with his own lasers, missiles and gauss rifle.  Unless one of the MechWarriors landed a killing blow against the head of the enemy Mech it was a battle of attrition, which unfortunately for the Wolf warrior he couldn’t win, the Warwolf couldn’t take as many hits as the Shike could.  Morgan intended on ensuring that exact outcome randomising his movements, cutting his jumps short and constantly tracking the lighter Mech in an attempt to throw off the Wolf pilots’ game which would cause a mistake and allow Morgan to capitalize.

Finally, after what seemed like hours but was actually only minutes the Wolf pilot made a mistake as the two approached each other it was a game of chicken which one would come off worse of.  Turning to the right instead of the left to protect his lighter rear armour allowed Morgan to turn in on Warwolf.  This put the two Mechs on an unavoidable collision course Morgan fired his short-range missiles at near point-blank range before clenching his Shirke’s hand actuator into a fist before the two Mechs collided in a sickening physical impact.  The Shirke’s hand, arm and then shoulder slammed into the charging Warwolf knocking the seventy-five-ton machine off balance and then sprawling onto its back as Terrance Kerensky failed to control the Mech.  Both the hand and short-range missile launcher had been ripped from the Shirke’s arm by the impact but other than armour damage Morgan’s Mech stood over the downed Warwolf.  In the cockpit blowing warm air against his face in a vain attempt to cool down Morgan reached over and dumped the remaining short-ranged-missile ammo, he didn’t need to carry a bomb which he couldn’t use.  As the Warwolf struggled to get back up Morgan stood square onto the Mech and fired his HAG again into the downed Mech before lashing out with a kick to knock the Mech down again.  “Terrance Kerensky, surrender now!”  Morgan ordered but the warrior continued to try and resist so Morgan hit the Mech again this time kicking one of the Mech’s arms as it tried to raise crushing the arm at the elbow joint causing seventy-five tons of Mech to fall down again.  “Surrender and live or die.  Final warning.”  Morgan warned the downed Wolf warrior.

Several moments passed with the Warwolf prone and at the mercy of the Shirke until the MechWarrior wordlessly signalled his surrender shutting down his targeting systems and bringing the Mech to it’s idle setting it would be against the rules of war, and violate the Trial’s agreement, for anyone else to target the Mech.  “Surrender accepted, Terrance Kerensky, I Morgan Christifori have defeated you in battle you and your Mech are taken as Isorla by the Star League Defence Force and you will serve as my bondsman until I see fit for you to return to the status of MechWarrior.”  Morgan stated ending the Circle of Equals in Clan tradition it was the right of a victorious warrior to take the isorla, spoils of war, as they saw fit including the MechWarrior.  It had happened to Morgan when he was taken by Clan Ghost Bear and now he was continuing this tradition.

After the battle which saw the SLDF recapture the world of Zosma from Clan Wolf and grant the Wolves safcon, to leave the world without attack, Morgan Christifori was summoned by General Hadassah Sadira who questioned his taking of a bondsman.  Morgan had stated that he was not the first Star League warrior take take on a bondsman, pointing out that the current Exarch Victor Steiner-Davion did the same during the Clan War, and he likely would not be the last.  While the General had not liked his reasoning believing he held onto his Ghost Bear traditions too closely she accepted his decision and placed Terrance Kerensky directly under his responsibility.

Combat Arena 5
Nexus Ri, Gladiator World
Star League Protectorate
24th October, 3114

Held officially by the Star League Protectorate Nexus Ri was really contested by the Star League, the Draconis Combine and Clan Snow Raven with few people on the world other than those directly involved in combat with the other factions or maintaining the machines for those battles.  While described as a “Gladiator World” Nexus Ri was not the like the arenas on Solaris VII with the battles here conducted by military commands and following a strict regime of combat, although like those on Solaris battles on Nexus Ri were often recorded and distributed to entertainment networks.  Territory on Nexus Ri often changed hands with each faction battling over abandoned towns, atmosphere purifiers, wind power plants and hydro electric dams.  In a month a structure of area could have three separate owners but the objective was not for one side to prevail over the others like in a real war instead it was to allow all three nations involved to test their individual combat units against the other nation’s forces with the territory changing hands often being dependent on which regiments were cycling through the world.

In what started as a typical gladiatorial trial between a rough company of Draconis Combine gladiators and a similar number of Raven Alliance combatants, a particularly long duel occurs, as a pair of combatants square off, trading blows, insults, and evading others for nearly an hour before the Raven Alliance ‘mech finally succumbs to damage.  After the hard-fought battle the Combine MechWarrior declares the Alliance warrior as her bondsman.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Unity City News Network
Unity City, North America
Terra, Star League Protectorate
2nd November 3114

â€œGood evening ladies and gentlemen, I am Walter O'Brian from Unity City News Network bringing you breaking news from the Eighteenth Whitting Conference here on Terra.”  The male presenter said he appeared to be in his fifties with balding hair on the top of his head, greying hair on the sides and a grey mustache.  For twenty years he had served the Unity City News and reported on the Star League Conferences.  “In the last month the leaders of the Star League nations have discussed various issues varying from the current actions of the Star League Defence Force and the direction this Star League will take.  Yesterday it was decided by the Star League member states that the SLDF will not be used to stop various member states coming into conflict with the council stating that the SLDF was formed to defend the Inner Sphere not act as a police force.”  He said breaking the news which many people had been questioning for years.  “It has also been decided that the SLDF will take full responsibility for the Milligan’s World Salient in the Draconis Combine with the worlds of Zaltousi, Milligan’s World and Quantraine all now falling under the Star League Protectorate Charter.  The newly named Milligan’s World Prefecture will fall under Star League Protectorate control the same as the Kittery Prefecture.”  He announced the change was a small one in the grand scheme of things but the additional worlds would bring many more citizens under Star League Protection.  “Draconis Combine Mustered Society Forces will withdraw from these worlds over the next few weeks and redeploy along Raven Alliance borders to support SLDF operations.”  He explained the changes the small salient of three worlds jutted into the Raven Alliance territory but for the most part they were peaceful with the Ravens over the border.

â€œAdditionally, today the Star League Council announced two further measures.  Firstly, a call by the Free Worlds League Leader Captain-General Joseph Marik to launch an Operation Bulldog style operation against Clan Wolf was rejected by the Council due to Clan threats threatening multiple borders the Star League Council members pointing out that many nations are being threatened.  The SLDF have agreed to further support the Free Worlds League agreeing to build facilities on Keystone with a branch of the Royal Cosara Weaponries being built near the Earthwerks facility there and reconstruction of the Fort Meade Star League-era Castle Brian.”  He explained while not completely federalized Cosara which was primarily based on Northwind was expanding with Star League support to build facilities across the Star League Protectorate Worlds bringing jobs and production to every corner of the growing nation.

â€œAnd lastly the most important announcement from this generation is that Magestix Ilsa Centrella of the Magistracy of Canopus has been made the new First Lord of the Star League Defence Force.  Ilsa Centralla is the second member of her family after Chancellor Naomi Centrella to become the First Lord of the Star League however she is the first leader of a periphery state to lead the Star League since the Usurper took control from the Cameron Family.  While there is no suggestion that Ilsa Centralla will attempt to follow such a path, assurances have been made by Exarch Victor Steiner-Davion that no Magistracy of Canopus forces will be allowed to set up inside the Star League Protectorate, Kittery Prefecture or Milligan’s World Prefecture.”  The announcer reported having a periphery leader as leader of the Star League was huge news.  “The First Black Watch Regimental Brigade along with several WarShips will be deployed to the Magistracy of Canopus as part of the First Lord’s new protection group.  Due to this lengthy deployment these vessels and the ground forces will be permanently assigned to each other for the duration of this deployment.  To further support these efforts the Star League Defence Force construction group supported by the Integrated Combat Services Group will be deployed to Gallis system in the Magistracy of Canopus to build an extensive support base for the Star League Defence Force.  The Integrated Combat Services Group are a mercenary command that have been based on Caph for the last ten years and they will be leaving a small force there to continue to support Star League Engineering Services based there.”

Balmoral Castle Residence, Aberdeenshire
Scotland, Europe
Terra, Star League Protectorate
3rd November 3114

In the lush green and brown Scottish country side near the North East coast Prince Luther Davion walked the grounds of the home that his father’s party had been given control over for during their visit to Terra.  Balmoral Castle had been a residence of the British Royal family since 1852 and had been rebuilt and modernized over the years to serve as a residence for the Cameron family.  During the Star League-era Stefan Amaris had razed the Castle to the ground during his purge of all surviving members of the family.  The surviving Winsor-Cameron family members had rebuilt the Castle and expanded the facilities to include a Mechbay capable of holding an entire battalion of Mechs to the east a runway capable of accepting military DropShips had been constructed on the massive grounds that were included with the Castle.

Luther liked being back on Terra following the attack on Terra the year before he had resided exclusively on New Avalon in and around the grounds of the Davion Royal Palace, this excursion to Terra had given the nineteen-year-old a little freedom.  Walking across the stone covered grounds that were around the facility wearing simple denim jeans and a loose shirt despite it being winter in Scotland he entered the massive Mechbay past his father’s Templar III OmniMech and his command lance.  The fifth Mech in the row of Mechs was his grandfather’s OmniMech the Clan built Dire Wolf OmniMech.  Standing in front of it was his father First Prince Burton Davion, his mother Duchess Sterling Davion, his grandmother Duchess Danai Centrella-Davion and his grandfather Exarch Victor Steiner-Davion.  Despite being eighty-four years old Victor Steiner-Davion was full of life and had taken to the role as leader of the Star League Protectorate in his stride during their month long stay on Terra his grandparents had visited with them at Balmoral but Victor’s thoughts and meetings included issues for across the Star League Protectorate and its Prefectures.

â€œGood afternoon” his mother Sterling said as he approached, it was barely after midday and after their late-night flight from Unity City he’d decided to sleep in a little.

â€œGood afternoon” he responded glancing up at Prometheus wondering why they were stood infront of the mighty one hundred-ton OmniMech.  He’d spent his childhood watching his grandfather practice with the Dire Wolf on the ranges near the Davion Palace.

â€œWe leave for New Avalon in a couple of days” his father said “but before we leave your grandfather wishes to present you with your Christmas present.”  He said following Luther’s glance up at the Mech.

â€œPrometheus” Victor said despite being the shortest of the group and the oldest in the group at eighty-four years Victor’s voice carried the authority that Luther was used to over the years.  Luther looked at his grandfather with a surprised look despite carrying Victor’s blood in him he had inherited many of his mother’s Clan genes as well as his height he towered over both his Grandfather and his father standing at more than six foot in height.  “I’m too old to pilot her into combat again, too many fights already fought by this body.”  He said

â€œMany victories won by the fist, and now many victories won by your mind.”  His grandmother Danai said squeezing her husband’s arm despite only being seven years younger than Victor Luther was always struck by how young his grandmother looked, she looked like she was thirty years younger with her hair still holding onto some of its youthful colouring.

â€œIndeed, it is time for Prometheus to return home and serve the nation it served for many years.”  Victor said “your father is retaining his Templar III, so Prometheus falls to you.”  He explained Luther noted that Victor refused to use the name that his father had given the Templar III, Dragon’s Wrath, Victor had always understood the Draconis Combine and respected it more than Burton Davion.

â€œThank you, I look forward to taking it through its paces the Sandhurst range is an impressive facility.”  Luther answered he saw his grandfather’s surprise and a glower of anger from his father.

â€œAs are the facilities on New Avalon, where you will finish your studies, as we have discussed you are coming home!”  Burton thundered this was not the first time the two had discussed this already several times.

   â€œI started my studies here…”

â€œAnd you’ll finish them at the NAIS.”  Burton said finally turning away from him towards the Mech “it will be good to have Prometheus back on New Avalon, now thank your grandfather.”

â€œThank you, I’ll do my best to take good care of her.”  Luther said he knew how much the second love of Victor’s life both of his grandparents smiled at him but also looked concerned at their son and his attitude towards his son.

Clan Wolf Assaults
Free Worlds League
8th November 3114

As Inner Sphere leaders leave Terra the reason for the SLDF existing in this modern fractured era is highlighted as Clan Wolf assaults targets throughout the Free Worlds League identifying a weak spot in Free Worlds League defences the Wolves seize Helm, Tania Australis, Bedeque and Lancaster from the defenders deploying nearly a dozen previously unseen Cluster’s built using BattleMechs manufactured on worlds captured by the Wolves from the Inner Sphere.  Each of these repurposed Inner Sphere designs have been refitted with Clan technology allowing them to hit harder than their previously design allowed.  The WarShip MS Kolorev, the Eighth and Ninth Free Worlds Legionaries are destroyed in the fighting as are the Zodiac Phantoms and Raymond’s Hussars Mercenary commands.

The one failed assault for the Wolves is on Connaught where the Ninth Wolf Guards Cluster are essentially destroyed fighting against the SLDF.  Star Captain Alaric Wolf takes command of the Cluster and leads the remains from the system as MechWarrior Alex Wolf leads a heroic rearguard action frustrating SLDF attempts to chase down the retreating Ninth in his Incubus BattleMech damaging dozens of the defenders Mechs and vehicles before finally being taken down.  As a result of his efforts Wolf scientists ensure that despite him not holding a bloodname that his DNA sample is added to the genetic mix that makes up the next generation of Clan Wolf warriors.  The remaining elements of the Ninth, three binaries retreat to Dieudonne where Star Colonel Alaric Wolf assumes full time command of the command and command of its rebuilding.

Troubles for the Free Worlds League continues as the Magistracy of Canopus, straight after their victory at the Star League conference, launch attacks on the District of Regulus.  Officially this is in response to Free Worlds League attacks and pirate attacks which are believed to have originated in their territory.  In the attacks the Magistracy not only search for raiders but also secure the systems of Chilung, Vikindu and Barlaston rolling back District of Regulus forces.  Despite the Magistracy of Canopus officially searching for pirate forces they do not announce any convictions of pirates following the actions.

On Terra advisers of the various member states of the SLDF note that the last SLDF First Lord to take immediate actions against other states also held the name Centrella, Naomi Centrella when she led the Capellan Confederation, though there are no calls for sanctions against the Magistracy or the new First Lord.

Border fighting
New Oberon Confederation and Ferris Collective
22nd November 3114

Two formerly held Clan territories the New Oberon Confederation and Ferris Collective come into conflict on several worlds as the two jostles to hold territory abandoned by the Clans in the region known as The Barrens.  On various worlds the two sides exchange fire using Mechs and vehicles they have salvaged from the various Clans and Inner Sphere states in the region.  The fighting comes to a head as the two sides enage each other on the world of The Rock.
The Rock is officially independently held by the inhabitants of the world but the New Oberon Confederation and Ferris Collective also hold territory on the world.  The inhabitants of The Rock retreat from their settlements into the world’s ancient fortress which the Clans had abandoned but once free The Rock’s inhabitants had spent much of their resources in refurbishing the facility.  The Rock’s people watch as the two sides fight before intervening int the end driving the two sides apart and bringing peace again onto The Rock.

Earnest and Bosch Solicitors of Wasat
Downtown Wasat Prime, Wasat
Star League Protectorate
25th November 3114

â€œIt’s a land grab by the Star League Defence Force pure and simple, we’ve been contracted by Earthwerks to oppose the move by Royal Cosara to build a facility on Keystone.” James McTeigue began within hours of the Whitting Conference announcement of SLDF movements on Keystone Earthwerks had contacted the local Earnest and Bosch firm on Keystone and lodged the complaint.  “As far as Earthwerks are concerned if the Star League wishes to invest in Keystone then they should do so by working with Earthwerks instead of building their own facilities.”  He said continuing with the Earthwerks complaint “While their argument will not concern the Star League Government much we believe that they may gain traction with the District of Marik’s government which is the tract we’re going to take with it.  Our office on Keystone is taking point with this but we’ll be doing our bit to prise a much information out of the Star League government as we can.”  He explained Earnest and Bosch was a multi-planetary law firm with offices on many worlds the offices on Wasat were the largest of the firm in the Star League Protectorate’s territories.  “Now let’s get started Keystone’s argument is that there are plenty worlds in the Free Worlds League that the Star League could build on, plenty worlds that could use the jobs that Cosara are ready to provide and that if Cosara are not willing then maybe Keystone will.”  He said allowing the threat to hang in the air for a moment.  “So far they have stopped short of threatening to pull out of Keystone completely but the threat…” suddenly he was interrupted by the sound of a VTOL passing closely over the building, far closer than any aircraft normally passed almost like the aircraft was landing, or crashing, nearby several of the people in the room moved to look out the window.  Opening the blinds, they saw a modified Hawk Moth Helicopter hovering less than one hundred metres from the office building.  Without a warning the weapons suite of the Hawk Moth activated and the entire floor sprayed with machine gun fire and missiles from two large chin mounted launchers.  The office building was not a military facility and the glass façade was not armoured to withstand more than a strong storm.  Bullets shredded the windows and cut into several people in the office before they had a chance to duck out of the way.  Bullets shredded glass, furniture and flesh before the first salvo of inferno equipped missiles slammed into the building.  Immediately the building was enveloped in flame as the sticky napalm jelly substance exploded.  The next salvos of missiles added fragmentation munitions to the mix which penetrated other floors of the twelve-story building as missiles streaked from the aircraft cutting into bystanders on every level of the complex.

The Hawk Moth continued to fire machine gun and missiles into the building as it began to move away with its chin turret tracking to keep the weapons on target causing more damage to the structure causing smaller fires in the external car parks as missiles exploded among the parked civilian vehicles.  As the VTOL moved out of range there was little left of Earnest and Bosch of Wasat other than a blazing collapsing ruin as the aircraft disappeared into the clouds above walls of the building were collapsing under the intense heat as emergency services began to arrive.   The VTOL rose through the air quickly with its electronic counter measures suite shielding it from tracking sensors.

Higher in the atmosphere above the clouds the Hawk Moth was joined a Sopworth Supply Camel which was also climbing.  The Sopworth levelled out briefly allowing the Hawk Moth to move over the Sopworth before coming to rest on top of it,  even as the Hawk Moth's blades were spinning to a stop the roof of the Sopworth was in motion beginning to slowly lower into the cargo bay of the craft and doors closed above making the craft airtight.

---

Inside the small cargo bay of the Sopworth the pilot of the Hawk Moth stepped out of the aircraft still wearing their full flight suit waiting in the bay was Christopher Grant, aka the Bounty Hunter, wearing a simple green jumpsuit everyone knew everyone onboard the ship there were no secrets between the Bounty Hunter and his team.  “It’s done” Kafka announced taking off her flight helmet revealing her long red hair “no-one is leaving that building alive.”  She said coldly

â€œGood, well done, we’ll be clearing the atmosphere shortly.”

   â€œOur exit is secure?”

â€œAffirmative, no pursuit expected, we’ll be heading to the next staging ground shortly.”  He said leaving the bay.

---

The Sopworth pulled out of the atmosphere and slipped into the traffic around Wasat heading directly for a massive Dante II-class Frigate which hung above the world its engines pointed towards the world as it prepared to leave orbit.  The Sopworth flew around the large WarShip like a small winged fish flying around a whale in the black ocean of space.  On the far side of the Dante the Sopworth docked with the larger vessel disappearing inside the WarShip’s docking bay.

On the SLS Toronto’s bridge the watch officer turned to the ship’s commander Captain Ivan Kolesnikov and nodded.  “Thank you, we don’t have to like this it’s part of the job.”  He replied seeing the officer’s disgust.  “Contact Wasat control again and inform them we’ve completed our third scan and there is no sign of the aircraft in question.  Add in if these things weren’t manufactured here, we might not have as many problems.”  He said stepping around the holo-table in the middle of the room, his magnetic boots keeping him stable in the microgravity, he entered his command code into the system and deleted the record of the Sopworth Camel docking with their vessel.  His orders had come directly from General James Topher, the Head of Star League Intelligence it wasn’t his job to disagree with command.

   â€œWe’ve been cleared sir”

â€œVery good, head for the nadir jump point single g burn.”  He ordered the watch officer nodded and his words were repeated throughout the vessel as a warning to all the crew to expect the burn from the Toronto’s main engines.  Slowly the ship accelerated moving away from Wasat.  Several days later at the nadir point the Sopworth left the Dante docking with an Invader-class JumpShip which carried several DropShips away from the system.

The Sopworth is on the link below, I saw it a wee while ago and it seemed like the perfect fit.  I'm not sure if there would be a mechanism for the VTOL to dock like described but we'll call it a quirk of this particular craft.

Time to end 3114

Deployment, Integrated Support Services Group HQ
Aswen, Caph
Star League Protectorate
8th December 3114

The base of the Integrated Support Services Group, the unit had been based here for years, with some elements sent to the world of Fenwick briefly to help bring it back to the Inner Sphere preparing the worlds spaceports for incoming travelers and now they were being deployed off world for the first time under Star League contract.  Colonel Janina el Arguioui was fifty-two years old and had taken command of the unit at the beginning of the previous year following an extended career with construction firms on Caph, during her time with the command she’d done much to prepare the unit for work beyond the Star League’s borders thinking it was nearing time for them to move on not expecting the SLDF to need them elsewhere.  Now with the Magistracy of Canopus leader holding the position of First Lord the Star League had agreed to help the periphery nation build infrastructure and Integrated Services Support were being sent there.

Standing in the middle of their massive command base Janina stood beside her XO Major Andreas Dandekar who would remain on Caph continuing to support the continued regeneration of Caph.  Centre to those elements would be part of the unit that would likely never leave Caph.  During excavations of one of Caph’s long forgotten Star League-era depots Integrated had discovered the find of a lifetime and something that they had decided they would renovate for their own use – a Rattler Air Defence Platform.  The Rattler was a mobile structure which formed part of the SLDF’s System Defence System Network capable of targeting space craft approaching the planet.  While Integrated had little need for an SDS platform this Rattler had been modified with multiple pieces of engineering equipment and formed a core part of Integrated’s efforts to re-establish Caph’s Mag-Lev network.

â€œYou think you’ll manage without the rest of us?”  Janina joked looking at the younger man.

â€œI think so sir, we’ve got Betty” he joked indicating to the mobile structure “they’d need a regiment to prize us out of her if we needed to hole up and enough local contacts to keep us going, you think you’re ready for the Periphery.”  He asked more seriously while Caph was a world in need of a lot of rebuilding the periphery had never been tamed and would be constantly threating.

â€œWe should be, we’ve got our own elements and the Twenty-seventh SOG will be on hand to support us along with the naval elements sent to the task group.”  She explained the Twenty-seventh Special Operations Group from the Blackhearts had been assigned to Integrated for the duration of their stay on Gallis as a support element.

â€œUnless they get…” Andreas didn’t finish his statement as a large hovercraft approached them painted in Integrated’s light blue and yellow construction site colours.  “What the hell is that?”  He asked looking at the craft which wasn’t part of their TO&E.  The hovercraft came to a rest more than thirty metres from them it was perhaps three times the size of most other hovercraft and was covered in weapons and communications antenna.  As the huge fans began to cycle down one of the side doors opened and out walked Duke Kalvin Gustafson the planetary leader of Caph.

â€œColonel, Major, I’m glad I could catch you before your DropShips left” he said as he approached while he was in his seventies Gustafson carried himself like the MechWarrior he had been when he was younger.  While he’d long since retired from the battlefield he was still full of energy. “Colonel Arguioui, a gift from a grateful world a brand-new Hexarme Mobile HQ vehicle for your command.”  He said turning towards the hovercraft “straight from Protectorate R&D the Hexarme is going to be deployed by SLDF units across the Inner Sphere, I twisted an arm or two and have had one released for your command along with its eight person crew and seven maintenance technicians who are willing to volunteer to join you in heading to Gallis.”

â€œThank you” Janina said glancing at the vehicle and thinking of it and the fifteen new people she’d have to account for in the future.  Caph had done a lot for her command and with the Rattler and Dandekar’s people remaining on the planet Integrated would continue to help the world.  “Integrated will always be linked to this world Duke, we will ensure that we return following our deployment to Gallis, and I will do my best to return our new Hovercraft and its crew.”

â€œThey are ready for the adventure, each of them trained with the Caph Guards they know how to serve in a command Colonel, I promise you, and I promise we’ll look after Major Dandekar and his people while you are away.”

â€œI’m sure that they’ll look after you too.”  She promised him looking at “Betty” which stood behind them “Major Dandekar know exactly what our plans for Caph are Duke Gustafson he and his people will serve you well.”  The Rattler was a huge asset for the command and it was not transportable, they’d return for it and Gustafson knew it so the Hexarme was an investment by the people of Caph and Arguioui would make sure they used it.

Pirate Point, Excalibur (Scimitar-class Missile Cruiser)
Charleston, Gaenir Collective
Periphery
10th December 3114

The Scimitar-class Missile Cruiser Excalibur, it’s long red hull a carryover from its original construction as an Avalon-class Cruiser while its Nova Cat emblem showed its current ownership status, arrived high above the world of Charleston in the Gaenir Collective.  The small periphery nation had no space defence forces in the area to oppose the Cruiser’s presence but the Excalibur’s intent was not attack today.

Deep within the seven hundred-and-seventy thousand vessel in the command centre Star Admiral Alexandria Leroux floated confidently as there was a buzz of activity around her.  “Star Admiral, we are in position over Charleston, no local defences from Gaenir.”  One of the crewmen reported.

â€œUnderstood, communications send our message package to the Third Watch, engineering prepare to transfer energy package from Lithium Fusion Battery once message is confirmed received, helm as soon as engineering confirms jump us out of the system and take us to our next objective.”  Leroux ordered giving all three departments their orders.

â€œAffirmative, Star Admiral” all three positions replied in rapid fire acknowledgement of her orders.

â€œStar Admiral, message in receipt at source and acknowledged by Star Colonel Franka West.”

   â€œEnergy transfer confirmed.”

   â€œCoordinates confirmed”

â€œJump the ship” Leroux ordered and within a couple of minutes the Excalibur launched itself out of the system.  On the ground the Third Watch immediately began abandoning their positions on Charleston with the local defenders unable to stop the Clan unit.  While the troops on Charleston did not know this these actions were being repeated by Nova Cats on fourteen other systems as the Clan abandoned its Expansion Region in its entirety and turned those troops towards the Federated Suns.  Watch agents embedded in the Taurian Concordat, Fronc Reaches and Gaenir Collective ensured that all three periphery nations were aware of the Nova Cat withdrawal essentially ensuring that all three nations would be in conflict over the region and not bothering the Clan.

The Nova Cats ensured military equipment was removed or destroyed while leaving upgrades they had made to local infrastructure.  They also ensured that all Nova Cat born civilians were evacuated from the worlds as were anyone who had proven their worth to the Clan while the native populations were left as if the Clan had never been there.

Raid in Force
Sakhalin, Bell PDZ
Capellan March, Federated Suns
12th December 3114

In a pair of raids against the back of the Federated Suns the Capellan Confederation’s Elite Red Lancers and Dynasty Guard Regiments supported by several WarShips invade and conquer Ulan Balor and Sakhalin.  Leading the Red Lancers from her Vandal OmniMech Duchess Zeia Liao leads the assault on Sakhalin brutally cutting down targets with her sixty-five-ton Mech’s Light Gauss Rifle, Vibroblade, lasers and inferno missile munitions.  The first-born daughter of Chancellor Dao-Shen Liao proves to be a brutal and skilled fighter in the heavy utilitarian OmniMech.

These attacks occur as Clan Snow Raven begin heavy raids against the Draconis March of the Federated Suns striking at Bryceland, Kennard, Tancredi IV, Pitkin and Hazelhurst with raids against defence forces while Inner End and Haynesville are captured by the Snow Ravens who drive out local defenders following local Trials of Possession in each case the AFFS defenders show the Clan force respect.  With Federated Suns already trying to hold the Benjamin Salient, trying to defend Robinson from Draconis Combine assault and hold the Nova Cats at bay their defences are stretched to breaking point.

Press Conference, Courtyard
The Triad, Tharkad
Donegal Province, Lyran Commonwealth
19th December 3114

In front of the Government Hub on the Lyran Commonwealth’s capital of Tharkad dozens of reporters were gathered for a press conference.  On a small podium set in front of a pair of Main Battle Tanks, a Manticore II and a DI Schmitt, a tough looking man in his fifties stepped up to address them.  His close-cut dark hair was beginning to go grey in places his face broken by dozens of wrinkles showing his experience for all to see.  He wore an immaculate Lyran Commonwealth Armed Forces dress uniform of the armour corps with the unit patch of the Eisenjagers Independent Armour Regimental Brigade, a Rommel Tank and Steiner Fist insignia, displayed proudly on the arm.

â€œI am Colonel Bernard Howard, the commander of the Second Eisenjagers, today I return to the Lyran Commonwealth from the world of Arcturus.”  He said “I and my fellow Eisenjagers have continued to serve the Lyran Commonwealth under the command of Aiden Grey against the occupying forces of Clan Hell’s Horses.  The troopers who served under the General’s command are some of the bravest I have ever seen spending their lives for the people of Arcturus and the Lyran Commonwealth against insurmountable odds.  It is my duty to announce that Aiden Grey has fallen and all remaining resistance on Arcturus by Lyran forces has now ended.  We will continue to claim Arcturus as a holding of the Lyran Commonwealth but it will be one under occupation.”  He said pausing remembering those who had fallen “I will continue to serve with the Lyran Commonwealth and will oversee the rebuilding of the Eisenjagers Independent Brigade.”

This announcement of the official capitulation of Arcturus comes as the SLDF and Lyran Commonwealth defenders stop a combined Hell’s Horses and Clan Coyote assault on the district capital world of Freedom in the Isle of Skye.  While the Inner Sphere forces have their victories on Freedom and in the system of Alexandria news comes that the worlds of Whittington, Eaton and Yedi Prior have all fallen to the combined Clan assaults as Clans Jade Falcon, Hell’s Horses and Coyote all push into the Isle of Skye region.

Expedition Landing Site, MacMahon (Fortress-class DropShip)
Novus Terra, Deep Periphery
28th December 3114

In front of the Fortress-class DropShip MacMahon Dave O’Connor lead pilot of the mercenary unit Cemetery Wind stood with Expedition leader Christoffer Trossen on a new world.  Though the world known as Novus Terra was not a completely hostile world to humans both wore breathing masks to assist in filtering the air which had a slight taint hazardous to human biology.  Dave O’Connor was uncomfortable standing beside Trossen, this was Amanda Cavalcenti’s job, Trossen was a civilian but he carried himself like someone who could look after himself.  While he was in his fifties, he stood over six foot in height and was well built having worked out for years in gyms in between his scientific studies.  Ahead of them approached a single Ostscout BattleMech painted in the grey colours of the rocks around them.  The thirty-five-ton humanoid Mech had a single laser jutting out of its chest but otherwise looked like an oversized human.

The Mech stopped almost twenty metres clear of them and a chain ladder dropped down the front of the Mech and soon after the pilot climbed out of the Ostscout cockpit and down a ladder.  The figure slowly walked towards them as they approached O’Connor could make out that the figure was a male who appeared to be older than both of them.  His jumpsuit was primarily white, it was obviously not new with multiple patchwork repairs having occurred over the years giving it multiple different coloured patches.  On his belt he had what appeared to be a heavy pistol holstered and several other survival packs.

“Welcome to the Novus Terra system” he said to them unlike O’Connor and Trossen he didn’t wear a breathing mask having either adapted to the taint in the atmosphere or not caring about it due to his advanced age.  “My name is Greg Bushroe, I command those that call this world home, I’d like to know why you are visiting this world.”

“As we said from orbit we are simply exploring and mapping the area beyond the Free Worlds League and Magistracy of Canopus.”  Trossen explained “we mean no hostile intent; we only wish to find the populations beyond the nearby realms which were formerly held by the Marian Hegemony and the worlds beyond them.”

“Ah, well Novus Terra is occupied, there is no Marian influence here only myself, my unit and our people.  There are half a dozen farmers and small settlements across the planet, mostly people just wanting to be left alone.  We’re too far from anyone for them to show an interest in us before today, and I hope after this meeting you’re satisfied enough to leave?”  He said obviously becoming irritated by their presence.

“That’s an Ostscout 7Jb isn’t it?”  O’Connor asked looking admirably at the BattleMech behind Bushroe “built by the original Star League Defence Force.”

“Yes, I brought it here with me, there isn’t a cache here before you think otherwise.”

“It’s an expensive piece of kit, even for an antique” O’Connor said speaking out loud what he was thinking, the 7Jb was a Royal variant of the Ostscout put into limited production by the original Star League there wouldn’t be very many of them left in the Inner Sphere and none were in production anymore.

“Brought from my previous occupation in the Inner Sphere, MechWarrior?”  He asked looking O’Connor up and down.
“Affirmative, David O’Connor, I pilot a light BattleMech known as the Mammoth.”

“I don’t recognize it, but then I’ve been out of circulation for a while, we don’t get MechWarrior’s Monthly out here.”  The older man joked MechWarrior’s Monthly was a subscription service which was primarily sent out via HPG from its distribution centre on Terra.

“It’s relatively new” O’Connor said “built in the Free Worlds League primarily for security work I’d guess it wouldn’t be even a match for your antique.”  He said glancing at Trossen who nodded “it’s also our heaviest Mech, sir, we’re not here to cause you harm.  We are simply exploring and seeing what’s out here.”

“I appreciate your honesty Mr O’Connor, but I’d prefer not to show you everything we have, if your people decide to ‘explore’ here in the future we’ll need all the surprises we have.  All I will say to you is that we’re willing to trade with outsiders if they trade on our terms, they land where we ask like you did today and they trade fairly.  We’ll not entertain exploration of our world by outsiders unless there is something specific you want to look at, then we’ll assess if your work will be any threat to our positions.”

“I think we can work with those restrictions.”  Trossen said “is there anything your people need?  Medical supplies or food?”

“Not at present, we brought a lot of equipment with us and the locals have been very supportive, thank you.”  Bushroe explained “we like the people here and they appear to like us.”

“Thank you for your time, we won’t bother you further…”

“Good” Bushroe said cutting in essentially ending the conversation he briefly turned to O’Connor and nodded once before turning and returning to his Mech.

“Not everyone wants visitors.”  O’Connor noted

“No” Trossen said “we’ve gathered some interesting information, maybe someone else will come by this world in the future, and maybe Bushroe will get the peace he desires.”  He said as they watched the man climb back onboard his Ostscout.  “Shame we used some fuel to get here but a trip onto any new world is an interesting one.  Onwards and upwards I guess.”  He said turning and walking back into the MacMahon leaving O’Connor to watch as the mysterious MechWarrior and his Ostscout walked away from their landing zone leaving them in peace, at least every world isn’t a hostile one, he thought before turning back towards the inside of the DropShip.  Within the hour the MacMahon was lifting off the ground and heading back into space, onwards towards their next world.

Trial Grounds, Research and Development
Tukayyid, Clan Territory Inner Sphere
31st December 3114

On Tukayyid the Clan research team watched as the Phoenix Hawk BattleMech walked out of the Mechbay onto the grounds.  Seeing a BattleMech, even an Inner Sphere one like this Phoenix Hawk wasn’t a surprise, but this Mech was special.  The Mech almost immediately broke into a run activating its jump jets as it ran in Mid-air the BattleMech appeared to convert a into something else with its upright stance bending over and its wings extending either side of the craft.  The newly arranged airborne Mech now flew a distand in it’s new form before going through further changes with the legs and arms folding into the aircraft’s form crating a fully operational aerospace fighter.

â€œAs you can see our test pilot has mastered the conversion process from BattleMech to aerospace fighter.”  Scientist Tualo said turning to the Loremaster of the Clans Iwabuchi Nagasawa who was overseeing the test project.
“MechWarrior Hector is of Raven stock and has adapted well to the process” he said as the Phoenix Hawk flew over their position “unfortunately not all MechWarriors have adapted as well not have pilots adapted to piloting a BattleMech which requires its pilot to be Intune with its machine.”

â€œI know how pilots work with their machines!”  Nagasawa snapped slapping the man across the side of the face it wasn’t a hard hit and Tualo didn’t move far, he should have known better than to try and teach a Trueborn Warrior how BattleMechs and Aerospace fighters worked even if LAM pilots needed to know both disciplines.  “Inner Sphere freebirth pilots are able to fly Land Air Mechs, their nations field entire regiments against us!”  He said angrily the Inner Sphere had gone down the LAM rabbit hole, much like the original Star League had, with every nation the Clans now fought fielding many of the machines.  The Clans had abandoned the technology on the instruction of The Founder Nicholas Kerensky who wished a divided system of MechWarriors and Aerospace Fighter pilots.  “The Draconis Combine embarrassed the Ghost Bears in the Mellen system the LAM’s they fielded able to out maneuver and out fight the defenders even when using our dueling laws.  The Clans must adapt.”

â€œAnd we will” Tualo said agreeing with him

â€œWhen can we have our first Clan variant of that Mech built and tested?”

â€œClan… variant?”  Tualo stammered “we have barely begun to learn how everything works the textbooks and information held from the Star League-era has only taught us so much.  We need to learn this technology from the ground up.”

â€œAre you saying that we need to recruit people from the Inner Sphere?”  Nagasawa asked he wanted work to begin on a new Clan built LAM as soon as possible before the Clans discovered the plans being developed on Tukayyid.  If the Clans discovered they could field such craft if they were built using Inner Sphere technology then it would never work.

â€œSome experts could be useful but our technology is not fully compatible with LAM technology.  We need to adapt our building practices to accommodate this technology.”

â€œI will instruct the Watch and Ebon Guard to seek out those that can help you.  There is a project in the Hell’s Horses Occupation Zone that could also help with your development work.  I will get you the people and the equipment do not fail me.”

â€œAff Loremaster.”  The scientist said as the Loremaster walked away from him the Phoenix Hawk flew over them again before turning back into a BattleMech and coming in for a landing on its jump jets.  They had successfully tested the Mech but production was a very long way away.

I'll get the support unit and warship lists and map uploaded hopefully Monday but feel free to discuss in the meantime.

3115

Snow Raven assaults
Hazelhurst PDZ, Draconis March
Federated Suns
1st January 3115

Opening a new front against the Federated Suns following their actions against Snow Raven a supply convoy.  Two entire Galaxies of troops supported by WarShips descend on the systems of Hazelhurst, Sterlington, Kirbyville, Bastrop and Stratford in a surprise blitzkrieg style assault.   Snow Raven fighters and BattleMechs almost blot out the light above Hazelhurst during the initial attacks with the Ravens rapidly overwhelming the defenders.

With most of the AFFS holding onto the Benjamin Sailent, Defending Robinson and fighting the Nova Cats the AFFS are far out of position and not ready for the assaults.  The Dragonlords Regiments defending the Bryceland PDZ hold their position defending their homeworlds following the previous Raven assault the units appear to be in no hurry to leave their worlds instead fortify their positions while other AFFS other units are directed into the area.  In the Hazelhurst system the FSS Staghound, a Peter-class Scout, is destroyed as the crew attempt to stop a Raven Titan-class DropShip making its way in system the Titan was not a standard model of the class and overwhelmed the Staghound with superior firepower.

Iron Wombs
Science Quarter, Wolf City
Sheridan, Wolf Empire
8th January 3115

In the heart of Wolf City, Clan Wolf’s defacto capitol city, on the world of Sheridan were the Clan’s Iron Womb complex where Wolf scientists created the next generation of Clan Wolf Trueborn warriors.  When the Wolves had arrived on Sheridan, they had built the Wolf City over a settlement that existed before much like the Clans had when they built Katayusha with entire neighbourhoods being razed and a new orderly city being built over the top.  Citizens of the old city were ordered to move to the outskirts or executed in a brutal operation which would give the Wolves the order they desired.  When the Wolves had taken Tamar in the old occupation zone, they hadn’t bothered with such operations but here in their “Empire” the Wolves intended on retaining Sheridan even after they seized Terra, Sheridan would remain a Wolf world now and forever.

With each section of the city defined it was unusual to see members of other castes in the others areas unless they were looking for something and today was no different.  Star Colonel Alaric Wolf was on the warpath the day before he had arrived on Sheridan to take part in the Ward Bloodname bloodtrial only to find that he had been passed over for selection and his only way to earn a Bloodname would now be through a grand melee.  Such a contest would reduce his chances significantly and would mean that if he won, he would receive one of the lesser Bloodnames.  Each Bloodname brought honour and respect but some, some were more equal than others in most warrior’s eyes.  Alaric was of Ward stock with his lineage bring drawn from the blood of Vlad Ward himself, the former Khan of Clan Wolf and one of the most respected leaders of the modern Clan Wolf, Alaric wanted to know why he had been passed over for ‘his’ Bloodname.

Entering the laboritaries, Alaric would have been anywhere in human space that had reached the technological level to investigate the secrets of science.  These non-descript white and grey offices with small office cubes on either side and larger research areas in the centre were where important science happened for Clan Wolf Alaric.  It was where Alaric could get answers he wanted, calmly he spoke remaining in control as much as he could as he addressed a group of scientists who looked at him with respectiful but wary eyes.  “I am Star Colonel Alaric of the Ward Bloodhouse; I wish to speak to the one who is in charge here.”  He said remaining at arms length to them his tone not entirely hostile.  “I have questions about my bloodline, questions that need answer.

â€œThis is quite improper…”  One of the scientists began but Alaric stopped him with a backhanded slap over the man’s face knocking him to the side, his anger beginning to boil.

â€œUnderstand this scientist, I am a Trueborn Warrior of Clan Wolf which your fate is tied to from your birth to your death and you are a scientist.  Warriors have ruled our Clan from its inception and will until the ends of time where all that remains is Clan Wolf and its subjects.”  He reminded the man as he calmly rubbed the side of his face “I have won the right from the leader of the Ward Bloodhouse to be here and to ask questions, I have been authorised to use any means I deem necessary to get the answers I want.”  He said which was a little stretch of the truth he’d won a Circle of Equals against Aron Ward to come here, that was true, but the leader of the Ward Bloodhouse had almost taunted him by informing him to ‘ask his questions and be unhappy with what you find, there are secrets Clan Wolf holds that will never become public.’  He hadn’t known what that meant but he was determined to find out exactly what he’d meant.  He was a trueborn warrior he knew that much and his actions for Clan Wolf had gained him the recoignition that would allow him to fight for a Bloodname like any other warrior, his successes should be built on by future generations.

â€œWell… scientist Vettel may be better to explain… he’s in his office… this way.”  The man began to say as he recovered from the slap.

â€œStar Colonel Alaric Wolf, enough of this witch hunt, if you wish to speak to anyone that person will be me.”  The thunderous voice of Loremaster Gloria Shaw thundered from the doors at the far end of the room.  “Scientists you have work leave us.”  She said walking into the office complex her massive bulk a reminder to anyone that she was an Elemental by birth the metal plate that ran the length of the right-hand side of her head from her eye to behind where her ear should have been.  Both her right eye and right ear had been replaced with cybernetics due to the damage caused by the injury the eye now an unblinking red glare that pierced through and unnerved her opponents.

Around Alaric the scientists vacated the area leaving him alone in the shared central area between offices.  “Loremaster, Aron Ward authorised me to come here and speak with these scientists…”

â€œAron Ward is dead, he met me this morning in a Circle of Equals and he was not my equal.” Gloria Shaw said interrupting him she stopped at arms length to him which for an elemental of her size was several feet and she was still intimidating despite being in her forties Gloria Shaw struck an impressive figure, her artificial red eye and metal plate worn with pride.  The news that she had killed a Bloodhouse leader in a Circle of Equals shocked Alaric. “His descision to overlook you for the Bloodname contest was a mistake as was his… lack of discretion could have cost Clan Wolf much if things that were done in the name of progress came to light.”

â€œAnd what does this progress have to do with me?”  Alaric asked wondering what his Clan had done which would affect him.

â€œWalk with me” Shaw commanded turning away from him Alaric matched her large strides as best he could to maintain pace with the larger woman. Once out of the offices Gloria Shaw led him silently down a grey corridor outside onto a balcony overlooking Sheridan.  It was a dull wet day near Wolf City the planet that Clan Wolf had selected as its new capitol was a habitable pleasant enough world and a perfect habitat for the Wolves that the Clan had released on their arrival with an abundance of prey for the animals.  Unfortunately, it was also a humid and wet world with frequent rain storms which covered half the hemisphere sometimes for days on end.  Already the Wolves had funded massive construction projects on the world to build flood defences to protect their facilities and the civilian settlements and to collect rain water for drinking and other uses.

As the rain beat down on them and the science complex Gloria Shaw turned to him ignoring the weather, on the balcony guard she placed a small device, Alaric was surprised realizing it was some sort of jamming device.  “We can talk here without being overheard.  While I trust the scientists in this facility, I do not know who else may be listening this device will mask our words and the weather will distort our words.”

â€œWhat did out Clan do, and how does it affect me?”

â€œHave you ever heard of someone named Katrina Wolf?”  She asked Alaric couldn’t place it immediately there may be a hundred Katrina Wolfs in the Inner Sphere it wasn’t an uncommon name.  “She also went by the names Katrina Ward and Katherine Steiner-Davion?”

â€œAff, I have heard of this pirate she was an Inner Sphere born freeborn warrior, she betrayed Clan Wolf and was killed in the periphery.”

â€œAff, she was claimed by Khan Vlad Ward when she was defeated in the Lyran Commonwealth.  Before her defeat Katherine was classed by many as one of the more successful politicians in the Inner Sphere.  Khan Ward was infatuated with her and impressed by her abilities, he wished to use her knowledge to forge a future for our Clan in a battleground that our Clan was not experienced.”

â€œThe only experience we need is that we earn on the battlefield quiaff?”

â€œAff, battlefield victories are important but using the politics of the Inner Sphere to our benefit is also important.”  Gloria Shaw explained “Ward believed that she could be a benefit to him in gaining control of the Inner Sphere unfortunately for Vlad Ward he died before his plan could come to fruition.  Neither Vlad Ward’s plan nor Katrina’s presence in our Clan have had a lasting effect bar one thing, Vlad Ward ordered Katrina’s DNA to be added to our genetics program.”

â€œShe was freeborn!”  Alaric exclaimed angrily “she did not earn the right.”

â€œNeg, she did not, but she is also not the first freeborn to have had their DNA added to the Clan genetics program there are hundreds of occurrences recorded through Clan history each cataloged and studied every time our scientists looking for improvements.”  Shaw explained informing Alaric of one of the murkier facts about their genetics program.  “Simply put to encourage genetic diversity and maintain the health of our future generations occasionally additional DNA is added to the program by scientists.  Normally these are taken from our own civilian castes because they have shown promise, but Khan Ward ordered Katrina’s DNA mixed in with his own and one other to breed a new generation of warriors.”

â€œWho else?”  Alaric demanded his anger boiling inside as he realized that Shaw was speaking about his generation of warriors and that he had been passed over because of Katrina’s DNA.

â€œVictor Steiner-Davion, Katrina’s brother and the present Exarch of the Star League Protectorate.”  Gloria shaw admitted watching the shock play on Alaric’s face.  “He is considered by many to be one of the best strategic commanders of the modern era having masterminded the destruction of Clan Smoke Jaguar and having led not only the Federated Suns but also now the Star League for decades.  Khan Ward ordered his DNA to be taken by the Clan Watch and added to our genetics program.”

â€œKhan Ward’s actions were dishonourable.  Clan Wolf’s future should be in Clan Wolf hands, I understand the need to keep our genetic stocks diverse but Clan Wolf’s future should be of its own making.”

â€œAff, I agree” Gloria Shaw said “however those actions have been taken and now we must live with them.  The scientists who were involved in the project have been reaved and thus far only one individual has proven their worth to our Clan.”  She explained “the impact this experiment will have on Clan Wolf is a minimal one.

â€œAnd what does that mean for me?”  Alaric guessed that the 'only one individual has proven their worth' was him and did not like the idea that his entire life had been an experiment masterminded by scientists and a dead Khan.

â€œYou Alaric Wolf are in a unique position; unlike the others of your generation, you have proven yourself worthy of having the right to earn a Bloodname and with Aron Ward’s death there is a place within the Ward Bloodhouse available."  He said confirming that Alaric had thought.  "Through Khan Ward’s DNA you have a right to fight for that name but there is a condition attached – your silence.”

â€œMy silence, once I am a Bloodnamed Warrior I can do what I desire.”  Alaric stated “it is the right of each Bloodnamed warrior to forge their own destiny, Quiaff?”

â€œAff, you can.”  Gloria Shaw admitted, she’d observed Alaric for some time she knew his potential “but, revealing this secret would damage Clan Wolf’s standing and if you were to lead this Clan with this secret revealed your position would be weakened in Clan society something that will not only cause trouble for you but also our entire Clan.  We are the Children of Kerensky we should be at the fore front of Clan society, do not jeopardies our position."  He warned sternly "do you understand Alaric?  Your own actions could determine how successful you are as a Wolf, you have a choice win a Bloodname, use discretion and potentially lead this Clan or do not use discretion and possibly end it.”  She said giving him the stark choice “either way Alaric, the choice is yours.”  She said picking up the jammer again she walked off the balcony back into the building.

Eight days later Alaric stood as one of the warriors fighting for the name made available by the death of Aron Ward.  Inside the Circle of Equals Alaric proved himself worthy of the name winning his Bloodname becoming Alaric Ward.

Border Raids
Magistracy of Canopus
Periphery
19th January 3115

With the conflict that began the year before continuing the Magistracy of Canopus with assistance from the Capellan Confederation push into the Regulan systems of Dalton, Jouques, Martigues and Shenwan the District of Regulus is clearly in trouble against the attacks.  In an effort to assist their Free Worlds League allies Khan Petra Furey, the leader of the District of Lesnovo and of Clan Smoke Jaguar’s remnants, orders her forces into action invading the Magistracy of Canopus.

The District of Lesnovo forces launch attacks across five worlds between Wisconsin and Rushcegg catching the Magistracy of Canopus support forces as they rearm preparing for the next wave of attacks.  On Wisconsin the First Rim Guardians and elements of Clan Smoke Jaguar’s reconstituted Beta Galaxy face off against the Third Canopian Brigade.  As with previous District of Lesnovo tactics the heavier machines of the First Rim Guardians lead the attack with Beta Galaxy’s primarily Ultra-light units maneuvering around the flanks and finally crushing the Canopian Regiment.  Survivors from the Rim Guardians are folded into Beta Galaxy.

In a similar attack on Ayn Tarma the Second Rim Sentinels Regiment and elements of the Smoke Jaguars Gamma Galaxy are pitted against the Second Canopian Brigade.  Unlike the attack on Wisconsin the four Canopian Regiments are ready for the assault and they repulse the invaders attempts at conquest.  Back within the District of Lesnovo the remains of the Rim Sentinels are folded into Gamma Galaxy.  While to an outsider this tactic appeared to be the Jaguars taking over the District of Lesnovo the people and the regiments accept their transfer as the majority of the “Clan” force is made up of native-born Free Worlds Leaguers who were born on worlds that have always been loyal to House Marik and as suce the people of Lesnovo see their “conversion” to Smoke Jaguar position as simply a transfer between units.

With the failure to secure Ayn Tarma the District of Lesnovo’s attacks do not stall instead Khan Petra Furey is even more determined to show her district, and by extension her Clan, are ready to fight the wars that need fought and win their own battles without external assistance.  As a result, District of Lesnovo forces assault the remaining three worlds in their target list with renewed vigour.  While Rushcegg and Saonara fall to their assaults on Skovrec do they suffer any significant reversal when the passing WarShip MCS Katara obliterates two JumpShips and eight DropShips worth of troops in space destroying the entire invasion force.  Hundreds of soldiers and thousands of tons equipment are lost in the attack showing the power of even the smallest WarShip when it is used correctly against ground forces.
The destruction of the Ayn Tarma assault force Khan Petra Furey orders the remaining elements of Delta Galaxy stood down and its forces retested for their warrior positions.  Without significant shipyard facilities available to the District of Lesnovo she turns to her Free Worlds League allies for assistance using contacts within the Free Worlds League Smoke Jaguars neigotiate with Free Flight of Fletcher and arrange to purchase three Monolisk-class Destroyers.  Unfortunately, due to orders already placed at the shipyards these vessels will not be launched until 3125.  In the meantime, for the defence of their district and for future offensive operations, Khan Petra Furey decided her people needed other options and looked inside the district for support.

With the Magistracy of Canopus facing assault from multiple districts of the Free Worlds League Magestix Ilsa Centrella orders her troops to hold their positions and rebuild their strength ready to take territory back from the District of Lesnovo.  The Magistracy of Canopus’ gains have another effect the worlds captured are classed as Inner Sphere territory bringing the nation that currently holds the position of First Lord into the Inner Sphere.

Briton Throne Room
Cyclops Station, Cyclops
Periphery
28th January 3115

Deep within the Cyclops Space Station Queen Gabriela Briton sat on her throne chair confident of her rule as she had been for the forty years.  Rarely did she dress differently than today her brown leather jacket covering the survival suit she always wore when in space.  The jacket itself told hundreds of stories and wore several patches she had added over the years to some it was a standard piece of clothing but to the queen and those people who lived on the station it was a symbol of her rule as much as any crown would be.  While the survival suit served its own purpose Gabriela Briton occasionally visited penal mining colony in the system, she primarily lived-in space and as such dressed appropriately ready at all moments for reports of a hull breach and the survival suit was one key factor in survival or death for space dwellers.  The “Throne Room” onboard the station outpost was actually two rooms one part was an extension of the CIC facility that ran the station where the Queen could oversee what was going on on the station, when the station was still a Potemkin-class ship in the service of the SLDF this room had been a separate meeting facility used by flag officers to oversee invasions of worlds.  From here she could watch as the stations day to day operations were conducted and hold private audiences if required.

“Jump signature” one of the crewmen manning the operation’s centre announced “single JumpShip Invader-class” he said then after a few moments “it identifies as the SLJS John Doig, they are requesting permission to deploy a DropShip to the station to conduct neigotions.”

“Authorize them to approach” Briton said “have our fighters’ approach and escort them in once they are close enough.”  She commanded then she flicked a switch on her throne which turned the entire wall around into another compartment away from the buzz of the operations centre.  At the door stood two guards at attention their magnetic boots holding them onto the deck in the micro-gravity.  Moments later her Chief of Security Ronin Ichiro Matsumoto walked through hatch entering from the Ops centre to this day he still wore his Red and Black DCMS uniform just without any of the ranks or medals he was entitled to on his uniform he still wore the Katana blade he had as a DCMS warrior even though he was no longer entitled by his native-born tradition.  She appreciated the fact that he still had the blade and his skill with it.

“Sumimasen, Joō Briton” he said bowing despite being the father to her children Ichiro knew his place on the station; one step lower than her. “I believe that allowing the SLDF to approach is a risk that we do not need to take.  They do not need to come here; we can survive without being part of the Cirincus Federation and without their assistance.”  He suggested refering to the recent decision by the Queen to remove the Cyclops Station from the Cirincus Federation and declare their independence once more.  In recent weeks the Rim Collection had pushed into several systems of the Cirincus Federation shattering commands after the Rim Collection claimed that Cirincus was responsible for raids into the nation.  This had caused the four “Zeta” worlds to break from the Federation creating a buffer between Cirincus and the Rim.  Independence would be good for the Cyclops Station and allow them to trade with and raid all three nearby nations.  The SLDF had no presence in the region why they’d come to the Cyclops was a mystery and Queen Briton liked a good mystery.

“I agree we do not need them, but I am curious about what they have to say.”  She explained “Also you do not simply insult someone who could knock down a wall of your home with a flick of their wrist.  The SLDF have great power behind them and while the Cyclops is strong it wouldn’t survive an extended encounter with a dedicated military threat.

---

It took three days for the SLDF DropShip to reach the station as it approached fighters from the station escorted it in.  The ship appeared to be a large cargo DropShip that had been modified to carry small craft and additional weapons according to the Cyclops military sensors the ship appeared around twenty-five thousand tons in gross weight visually it appeared to have one central round section and four bulbous cargo/engine modules running around the ship with two either side of the central section.  From its fighter bays two aerospace fighters and a small craft launched turning towards the station with the fighters peeling off and flying down the length of the station as the small craft docked.  Queen Gabriela Briton had requested that the SLDF party be welcomed onboard like any other traveller and to go through standard immigration checks and then taken to the Throne Room.

As a result of the Queen’s instructions the party of four from the Star League Defence Force took three hours to get from immigration to the Throne Room which was currently turned so the room was private and away from the CIC Operations.  When they arrived Queen Gabriela Briton was sat waiting for them alone with Ronin Ichiro Matsumoto Queen could see their party had two large and obviously capable security officers who were dressed in standard military fatigues of trained marines.  She had no doubt that even without weapons they’d be a match for her own guards in a fair fight.  The other two were dressed in SLDF uniform one an older man with receeding grey hair and a grey mustache wore the grey jacket and black trousers of a Captain while the other a younger man with dark hair wore a plain black uniform jumpsuit all four stopped at a respectful distance from her and Ichiro but far enough away from the guards to not be an immediate threat.

“Welcome to The Cyclops, I am Queen Gabriela Briton, what can we do for you?”

“I’m Captain William Blannin the commander of the SLS Liverpool, thank you for seeing us” the older man said introducing himself “we’re glad to see that the Cyclops is still thriving it has been some time since we have made contact…”

“Officially we have never had relations with the Star League Defence Force” she said interrupting the captain “whatever unofficial relations you had they were not with me and so you should discount them entirely before continuing or leave before I become angry with you.”  She demanded she saw Matsumoto tense beside her and knew the SLDF would have to.

“Of course, Queen Briton, I did not mean any offense, the SLDF have been aware of this station’s presence purely through the words of the traders who have dealt with you and from ComStar’s records.”  Blannin explained backtracking slightly.

“Now that we understand one another may I enquire ONCE more why you are here?”  Her emphisis on the word once was enough to make it clear that she wished to proceed with business now rather than continued small talk.
“As we understand it your nation has recently broke from the Cirincus Federation…”

“Something we have done within a matter of the last few days; you are well informed” Briton said quietly
“…and as a result of your new independence we would like to establish diplomatic relations with this station and help keep you in contact with things outside this station.”

“As your ‘traders’ have no doubt informed you we have many people coming through our station and we learn many things.  I am sure the Star League would like to know some of the things we know?”

“Yes, we would however I’m sure certain people would only talk to independent trading outposts like yourselves.”  His diplomatic dodging of the Cyclops position as a pirate nation was well done and Briton allowed him to continue.  “With your independence does come some risks however, the recent conflicts between Clan Fire Mandrill and the Cirincus Federation has shown what can be done with enough weapons.”

“The Cyclops can defend itself”

“For a short period of time yes.” Blannin suggested “what we offer is the ability for the Cyclops to hold out longer until help could arrive and resist external threats such as those provided by Clan Fire Mandrill or by the Federation’s Erinyes.”  He saw them preparing to counter his argument and quickly spoke again “I know this station was built on a Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser and despite its outward appearance and the modifications that have been made over the years that some of its weapons have been restored but against a fully operational assault force alone Cyclops is not enough.”
“And you would also provide this help?”  Matsumoto said speaking up for the first time “you speak as a friend but from what I understand in your case we would be indebted to you should we call for your help.”

“Not necessarily you would not need to call for us, you could call for anyone, but the SLDF was formed to hold back the Clans we aim to serve those in need of assistance.”  He offered “which brings us to why we are here the SLDF would like to enter into an agreement with you similar to the one that you held with ComStar.  We would like to hire several DropShip collars with you and in exchange we will provide you with funds and information from the Inner Sphere.”

“Considering you will receive information while your people are here all I hear are the ching-ching of C-Bills.”  Briton said
â€œI think you can do better.”

“Like what?”

“You say that you want us to be able to communicate with those nearby then perhaps you could provide us with an HPG?”  Briton said smiling “we have a compartment that could be converted to the purpose and power lines that lead into that area.”

“An expensive piece of equipment.”

“Which you could charge us and the people passing through the Cyclops to use.”  Briton suggested “my people could not operate the facility but those SLDF personnel you wish to dock at our station could run the facility and make some money while doing it.”

“We’d need more for such a service, two of the docking collars free of charge.”

“A fourth docking collar free of charge” Briton countered “you cannot expect me to offer things to you for nothing you want ComStar’s agreement you can have ComStar’s agreement.  But these new deals are extra.”

“Then we’ll also want to leave an armed security detachment with the HPG and the personnel” the younger man in darker clothing said.

“With weapons that are checked onto the station by my people.”  Matsumoto said “nothing that could penetrate the hull will be allowed onboard and no Battle Armour the station was not built for them to traverse the corridors.”  He said the two exchanged a nod of agreement.

“Major Malcolm Galley will command the detachment here on Cyclops” Blannin said indicating to the man all in black.

“Pleasure” Galley said nodding

“Of couse and to protect this investment you will authorize weapon sales to the Cyclops.”

“There is a line and that one we will not cross” Blannin said according to Star League intelligence the people of the Cyclops with support from the Cirincus Federation perhaps as many as three of the Heavy Naval Particle Cannons which made up the original Potemkin armament giving the station additional punch.  One of these weapons had been used to obliterate a pirate DropShip several years before as a show of force further power was not something that Blannin was will to entertain.

“How about defensive items such as anti-missile systems?”  Briton suggested “in exchange we’ll give you a fifth docking collar?  Which should be more than enough for a garrison, communication staff and whatever else you wish to pass through the station.”

“I will confirm with my superiors if that is an option.”  Blannin said “for not we’ll agree to provide you with an HPG in exchange for the garrison and the docking collars discussed.”

“Well bargained and done, Captain” Briton said rising from her chair “now please you, the major and your friends should join my family for a meal to cement this deal.”

“Agreed, I hope this is the start of a lasting relationship”

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Presentation Ceremony, Algonquin Theatre
Jefferson City, Freedom
Isle of Skye, Lyran Commonwealth
8th February 3115

The arena was filled with twelve thousand people assembled on a triple tier which faced down on a single display podium.  The owner and announcer of the Algonquin Theatre Wolfgang Bogdanow was both nervous and excited today various companies were showing off the new Mechs which were being presented to the defenders of Freedom with Duke Brandt Simons-Steiner here in person to accept them.  Recently Freedom had been a nervous world with the Rasalhague Dominion and Clans Jade Falcon, Hell’s Horses and Coyote all bearing down towards the planet and Brandt Simons-Steiner’s brother Bodeven had been making noise about taking a more proactive position in defence against the Clans.  In response Brandt had spent money from the Simons-Steiner coffers and was now bringing in a new mixed battalion of forces for the defenders including many new Clan Mechs.  The presentation here at the Algonquin Theatre would put the site and Bogdanow on the map and bring in plenty money in the coming months.

Now the first Mech a BattleMaster 6C was being presented with its twin cockpit the most stand out feature the Command Console mounted in the head of the BattleMech providing superior command capabilities.  The BattleMaster was an old design but still a favourite across the Inner Sphere which constantly adapted to the changing environment of the Inner Sphere, this version of the venerable Mech featured twin pulse lasers and a short-range missile launcher which provided close in firepower while medium to long range firepower was provided by four light autocannons.  The eighty-five-ton BattleMech turned slowly showing everyone its firepower.  At the back of the Mech there were two extended range small lasers which would add further defence to the Mech.  Because of the half circle design of the Algonquin Theatre the crowd were able to get closer to the eighty-five-ton Mech than most people could be while being safe due to the Solaris VII-style energy barriers which were employed around the entire arena.

As the applause rang out Wolfgang Bogdanow spoke “Ladies and gentlemen, from a venerable giant to an invader’s Mech which now serves in our defence.”  He said as the BattleMaster thumped out of the arena a far smaller design walked in.  Weighing in at thirty-five tons the hunched over Puma BattleMech painted in the black, silver and brown of Clan Wolf stood proud in front of them all.  The crowd murmured as the OmniMech extended its arms stretching like a human would “the Puma S is a design we will be employing in the future to defend our cities from intrusion and for hunting down Clan Elementals.”  Wolfgang said the Mech was equipped with multiple pulse lasers in the arms but that was not the most horrifying aspect of the Mech, sixteen machine guns covered the arms and torso of the Mech making the Mech more than capable of cutting down multiple infantry soldiers or Battle Armoured troopers in moments.  The Mech turned slowly on the platform flexing its arms and twisting its torso giving people the full experience of the light Mech.  “Built by Clan Mountain Wolf on Gallery the Puma is…” he began to explain more about the Mech when he saw the energy barrier stutter and then suddenly fail “…oh my…” He said his words failing him “ladies and gentlemen, no need to worry we’ve had a minor technical hitch but you’re perfectly safe…” he began to say as the Puma continued its routine but then stopped when facing the Royal box.  For a moment time seemed to slow as the Puma’s machine guns, pulse lasers and torso mounted flame thrower opened fire with a thunderous noise cutting down the duke, his immediate family and hundreds of civilians who were caught in the attack as the Puma’s pilot specifically targeted the area with bullets and pulse laser fire.

Wolfgang Bogdanow knew he was ruined by the sudden and deadly attack but he’d be a patriot and seal in the Puma long enough to slow it and allow the milita to arrive and arrest the pilot.  Turning to reach for the emergency lockdown button in his control room Bogdanow’s thoughs of financial ruin and his control over his arms failed him in an instant as a burning white vibroblade sliced through his back and penetrated his chest.  For a moment Wolfgang Bogdanow stared down at the blade, his thoughts escaping him as he looked at the weapon and knew the result and then he slipped into unconsciousness and death.

â€œOne, Two, your clear control eliminated.” The power armoured assassin said allowing the body to fall to the floor her feminine voice and body movement clear even through the power armour.  As she spoke the Puma continued to fire with its arms now turning on staff and guards from around the building showering more areas of the theatre in heavy machine gun fire.

â€œReceived, link up with Three and evacuate.”  The other person replied as the Puma ceased fire the theatre was on fire, there were hundreds of casualties in the stands and hundreds more scrambling for cover while there were thousands of shell casings at the OmniMech’s feet.  “Four, Five, I am evacuating.”

â€œUnderstood One, the militia are all over the place answering calls you’ll only have a flight of ready VTOLs and some Battle Armour to contend with.”  Four replied the pilot did not like the sound of that but didn’t respond instead he turned the OmniMech and ran down the late night streets of Jefferson City.  Around the Theatre hundreds of private vehicles were trying to get clear of the scene of the attack jamming the roads for ground vehicles.  The thirty-five ton OmniMech was not going to be stopped by traffic jams though and ran through the parked vehicles smashing them to the side or crushing them as it went.

“This thing might be Clan Tech but remember I don’t have the range.”  The pilot said continuing to run the small Clan Mech down through the streets towards the harbour.

“For once you don’t need it, I’ve got you covered” another voice said over the comms.

“We’ve got lift off from city base four VTOLs all different models” another of the team reported.  “They’ll be with you in a couple of minutes.

“I’ll be near the harbour by then, Dominic, feel free to chime in when you’re ready.”  One said breaking their codes.

“Command sent” he replied from several roof tops long range missile and autocannon batteries began to fire into the air at the incoming VTOLs and down at the militia base.  The weapons fire was damaging buildings and starting mini-fires across the downtown city.  Each of them had been hacked to fire on automation until they were out of ammunition.
â€œYou’re clear Bounty Hunter, they will not brave that storm of weapons fire, you’re clear, we’ll see you after extraction.”

“Affirmative, thanks for the assist” Christopher Grant aka the Bounty Hunter replied smashing his Puma through the gate to the harbour and down one of the piers he ignored the small arms fire directed at his Mech as he threw the Mech off the end of the pier and sunk into the depths of the harbour.  Within a minute the Mech was safely on the floor of the harbour its hull perfectly sealed for this kind of operation he reached over to a detonator control he’d attached to the side of the cockpit and pressed the button detonating explosive they’d placed on the bottom of several of the ships.  As the ships began to sink throwing cargo and people into the water and stirring up the sediment at the base of the water obscuring movement below the waves, this covered his escape into the depths of Freedom’s ocean.

With the Duke dead a power struggle made up of his supporters against those of his brother began on Freedom driving the world into a state of civil war as the local militia was overwhelmed by multiple forces on different sides.  During the following days the Bounty Hunter’s team evacuated with hundreds of other civilians’ intent on escaping the world before things got really bad while for a week Christopher Grant survived on combat rations as he walked his Puma across the ocean bed to a small island.  Emerging at night the Mech was guided across the beach and into a cargo container he then dismounted from the OmniMech and headed to a local motel where he already had a booking.  For a week the Bounty Hunter remained in the motel keeping a low profile as Freedom continued to go through the pains of losing its leader.
While Freedom was an important world to the Isle of Skye the sudden loss of its Duke had destabilized the world.  The Bounty Hunter then left on a DropShip bound for Skye his Puma, which would form part of his team’s payment for this job, would be shipped off the world separately or his employer would send him a new one if it wasn’t possible to send that particular Mech.  Either way the job was done and Christopher Grant was off to his next challenge.

Madison Liao, Duchess of Andurien, Daughter of Dao-Shen Liao, screamed in anger as the flames consumed her BattleMech and the autocannon fire tore down the left arm of her Cataphract BattleMech.  She had chosen Sarna as a target for her unit’s raid against the Federated Suns but unfortunately the Clinton’s Cutthroats mercenary command which defended the world had been ready for them and were making her people pay for every inch of territory they captured.  Now a Cutthroats Legionnaire BattleMech was chewing her Mech’s left hand side to pieces with its rotary autocannon and inferno equipped short range missiles.  The Cataphract was a traditional Capellan design which had been reborn with new technology she twisted the Mech’s turret-styled torso to track the Legionnaire firing her Mech’s gauss rifle in an attempt to knock down the lighter Mech unfortunately the Legionnaire was too fast for her shot and the supersonic slug went wide tearing up the ground behind the fifty-ton BattleMech.  Now in behind her more autocannon blasts tore into the rear left torso of the Mech breaching the armour and damaging a heat sink mounted there.  Horrible green black fluid exploded from her Mech’s torso running to the ground Madison triggered both of her Mech’s rear mounted medium lasers scoring two hits on the running Legionnaire a small victory and one that only caused minimal damage.  Already the Legionnaire was running past her Mech’s back now hitting the back of her right leg and arm but mercifully missing the torso and the gauss rifle mounted there.  Two short range missiles flew past the Cataphract’s position thankfully missing her Mech which already was struggling with heat build up from the pervious strike and exploded on the ground throwing inferno jelly everywhere.  Moments later Madison’s relief turned to horror as she realized the missiles had not missed and were not meant for her and she saw four battle armoured troopers walk from the flames their armour ablaze the soldiers literally being cooked alive in their armour.  Three of the troopers had the wits about them to drop to the ground and try to knock off the jelly but it was to no effect and none of the squad survived the strike.

Even more angry at seeing members of her unit killed by an opponent she hadn’t been able to defeat Madison Liao twisted the Cataphract to her right-hand side and unleashed both her Mech’s gauss rifle and particle cannon in an attempt to strike down the Legionnaire.  If only one weapon could hit her enemy, she’d have preferred it to be the gauss rifle with its kinetic striking power the weapon could take an arm or leg completely off the enemy medium Mech unfortunately only the particle cannon struck home damaging more armour on the still fast-moving enemy.  Madison moved her stance and fired both variable speed pulse lasers but neither hit the target as the Legionnaire turned on her again the over head autocannon roared to life as did its arm mounted short range missile launcher.

As autocannon munitions exploded all over her Mech’s torso several shots hit her Mech’s head rattling Madison’s teeth as she was thrown around the cockpit.  She had no way to prepare for the two short range missiles exploding directly in front of her showering her BattleMech with another salvo of inferno jelly.  The heat levels spiked inside the Cataphract’s cockpit as her Mech’s heat sinks struggled then failed to deal with the rising heat.  Madison like all all MechWarriors wore as little clothing as possible and a coolant vest to help deal with the heat produced inside the BattleMech during battle but even these measures did little to help as the temperature skyrocketed.  In all of her twenty years Madison Liao had never felt such heat but giving into it was the last thing she could do she slapped the system shutdown override and tried to breath while commanding the seventy-ton Mech to move and try to knock off some of the inferno jelly all while trying to track the Legionnaire.

While she multi-tasked she suddenly melt something off, something burning, she checked the external filters but they had reacted to the external fire and were closed.  She glanced around the cockpit even as more autocannon fire raked down her Mech for no she could probably survive the autocannon rounds if there was fire in her cockpit, she’d be dead in seconds.  Glancing upwards she saw it one of the autocannon rounds had penetrated the cockpit’s frame breaching it and now she was smelling the fumes coming from the fire outside.  Confident there was no fire inside the cockpit she turned back to the fight at hand just as the Legionnaire charged in close to her and swung one of its balled fist hands up, she’d been still trying to locate the source of the smell and given up her situational awareness an easy mistake to make for a young pilot.  It was at this moment that Duchess Madison Liao realized she could do nothing as the Legionnaire’s left then right fist slammed into the Cataphract’s body first came a blow to the chest which ravaged and smashed the armour while the other slammed into the Cataphract’s faceplate.  Fifty tons of attacking BattleMech slammed its fist through the cockpit even if the cockpit armour had not already been damaged it would have likely killed the pilot, the fist punched through the head armour into the cockpit crushing Madison Liao in her command chair.  As the Clinton’s Cutthroat’s Legionnaire withdrew its fist from the Cataphract’s Mech and without control the Mech collapsed in a heap.  The mercenary pilot knew nothing about the pilot they had killed and ran off after the next target as Madison Liao lay dead on the field within hours the invaders had retreated from the world in disarray carrying word of the Duchess death back to the Capellan Confederation.

Throne Room,
Crimson, Salonika
Canopus, Magistracy of Canopus
17th February 3115

Entering the Throne Room of House Centrella on the world of Canopus Commanding-General Victor Focht was glad to see the joint guard of two Royal Black Watch and two Centrella Rangers warriors snap to attention in unison.  They had not been together for long but already appeared to realize that the best way for them to do their jobs was to work as a team, which was the whole point behind the Star League Defence Force.  For seventeen years Victor Focht had served as Commanding-General of the Star League and he’d never been to the Centrella family’s royal residence nor even Canopus.  It was a beautiful if humid world with rolling hills and forests which covered the deep mines that dotted the landscape.  Wearing his regular duty green uniform Victor approached the Magestix who sat on her golden throne waiting for him.  Magestix Ilsa Centrella was a beautiful woman now approaching her forty-second birthday she wore a gleaming green dress which fit her athletic body well and had golden threads running through it, on her head she wore matching green jewels which framed her head and fit in nicely with her dark skin hair.  As he approached the throne Victor saluted the Magestix and First Lord, she would be his immediate superior for her term as First Lord.

â€œWelcome to Crimson” Ilsa said as he approached “I hope you find the facilities we are providing your people here on our capital?”

â€œAffirmative First Lord they are very impressive facilities and they have good access ways to all of the cities main transport routes.”  He said appreciative of the Magistracy’s efforts to make them comfortable “I must say I was impressed with your efforts to repair the shipyards in this system they are coming on well.”

â€œThank you, my engineers will appreciate your praise I am sure, we could not continue to rely solely on the Trznadel Cluster Shipyards to provide transport for our realm first the Alliance Aerospace Group’s Bass Shipyards were brought online and now we are closing on having the Diamond Garter Shipyards operational for the first time since the First Star League almost completely destroyed them during the Reunification War.”  She said Focht knew exactly what the point she was making was; that the Magistracy was rebuilding to its previous strength with or without the SLDF’s help.  “What is the status of the SLDF at present?”

â€œThe largest expansion of the SLDF in many years is underway the Knights Corps has officially been activated within its ranks.”

â€œThe Knights Corps?”  She asked not familiar with the formation.

â€œAt present it stands at twenty combined-arms battalions each made up of a company of Mechs, armour and battle armour supported by some aerospace units.  These commands are led by a Knight of the Star League Protectorate and each of these Knights comes from a member world of the Protectorate.  Their mission is to promote the message of peace throughout the Star League nations and help resolve conflicts and assist local defenders in preparing to protect their own land instead of relying on external forces to save them.”  He explained “the SLDF’s plan is for there to be a formation active for every Protectorate world.”

â€œEvery world?  There are over seventy systems currently claimed by the Protectorate.”

â€œAlmost ninety now with Ruchbah, Basalt and Kawich in the Federated Suns, Hamilton in the Free Worlds League and both Shiloh and Pheoda from the Lyran Commonwealth all chosing to join the Protectorate this year.”  He explained “the SLDF is dedicated to their defence and while each planet will be provided for with Militia Guard forces the Exarch believed that it was time that the SLDF had a unifying force which could provide additional political and diplomatic powers to deployed commands and systems that needed it the Knights will provide this support.  Each Knight will carry the authority to speak for the Star League Defence Force and the Exarch of the Protectorate worlds giving them much political and resources support.  The Exarch sees them as the Star League’s olive branch force, capable of bringing some peace and security as well as a fighting force.”  He explained alone a single battalion was not a lot of troops but if one of the Knight forces arrived on a planet most nations would learn that they were the lead elements of a far larger force.  Exarch Victor Steiner-Davion had instructed that the Knights Corps do not lead assault forces but instead act as their own travelling support force picking their own destinations and helping where they could, almost like a state sponsored mercenary force.

â€œAnd with all this spent on the Protectorate how much will be spent on other nations defence, such as those of your new First Lord?”  She asked probing, “she like all of the other House Lords? Those that keep your Protectorate relevant and do not rip it to pieces.”  She asked barely concealing the threat despite the Magistracy having not claim to threaten the Protectorate.

â€œMagestix Centrella” Victor Focht said intentionally dropping her title of First Lord.  “Already SLDF Engineering Teams have landed on Gallis and are gathering resources that will see them build the largest supply and support facility in this entire region.  The Royal Black Watch and naval forces have also entered your realm to support you and help your nation, the Magistracy of Canopus will benefit greatly from the SLDF’s presence.  At present the SLDF’s main force are moving to help counter Clan threats from Clans Jade Falcon, Hell’s Horses, Snow Raven, Nova Cat and Wolf while all of them press Inner Sphere and periphery targets.”  He explained as the SLDF primarily tried to function as a shield for the Inner Sphere.

Already this week we have seen three more Federated Suns worlds fall to the Snow Raven advance while AFFS defenders had narrowly defended the system of Woodbine from falling.  There were numerous rumours that there was a split in the AFFS hampering defensive efforts.”

â€œSo, no more forces a shame.”

â€œFor now, no while you prosecute an attack on a nearby SLDF ally further support may take some time.”  Victor Focht warned, on Terra the Advisory council had raised concerns with the Commanding-General that the Magistracy would try to use SLDF forces against their allies in the Free Worlds League, something Victor would not allow was for his people to get drawn into a regional conflict.

Border raids
Jade Falcon OZ
21st February 3115

In an attempt to force back Clan Jade Falcon forces away from the Coventry system Lyran Commonwealth forces supported by mercenary commands and two SLDF Regimental Brigades assault the worlds of Krievci, Incukalns, Zanderji and Atocongo with an aim to liberating these four systems.  Unfortunately, Lyran scouts heading into the Krievci and Inckalns systems detect that in both systems the Jade Falcons have WarShips waiting for the incoming forces including a Battleship in each system.  Fearing heavy losses before they even made landfall Lyran commanders call off the attacks on both systems instead fortifying Coventry from attack.

The attacks on Zanderji and Atocongo however are a complete success as Lyran and SLDF forces invade both systems the 1894th Regimental Brigade of the SLDF splitting its forces to support the Nineteenth Arcturan Guards to retake both systems.  In both cases however the Lyrans find Clan Sea Fox defenders with the Jade Falcons completely gone from both systems the Sea Foxes agree to fight honour trials for both worlds allowing for minimal losses on both sides.  Due to the cordial nature of the engagements the Lyrans and SLDF troops learn from the Foxes that the Jade Falcons have turned over Esteros, Bountiful Harvest, A Place and Morges to Sea Fox forces leaving them only with Sudeten in the region cutting Sudeten completely off from the rest of the Occupation Zone.  While it is a strategy that none of the Inner Sphere realms would be comfortable it does not concern the Falcons as none of the other Clans around them are primarily naval Clans and do not have enough ships to enforce a blockade, while having the Falcons can also use the rite of Safcon to allow for uninterrupted travel.  Meanwhile Lyran and Star League Intelligence scratch their heads and search nearby systems for the garrisons of the four systems which the Jade Falcons had moved without them realizing.

Planetary Administrator’s Office
Gallery, New Stockholm
Halfway Province, Lyran Commonwealth
26th February 3115

It was cold on Gallery as the world descended into its winter season but then the windswept surface of Gallery was always cold and inhospitable Riko Danvers, the Scientist-General of the Mountain Wolf Clan, hated the world and he hated the Lyran Commonwealth for placing them there.  Apparently, the world’s defences had never been breached it was a natural fortress with hundreds of tunnels underground many of which led nowhere a labyrinth under the cold surface.  Unknown to the Lyrans since the remains of the Mountain Wolves had made Gallery their home, they had converted several of the tunnels to their own uses.

Placing his thick wolf fur lined jacket over his leather desk chair Riko Danvers immediately felt like he was being watched spinning around to his right quickly he drew a laser pistol from its shoulder holster.  He always carried a weapon and knew how to use it as he didn’t trust the Mountain Wolf warriors not to turn on him someday even if most of them were too inexperienced or too many years old to challenge him.

â€œHello Riko” the figure said sitting on the chair in the far darkened corner of the room even from here he could tell it was a female wearing a Wolf warrior’s duty uniform.  Even in the darkness that his much of her face he could see her bright red hair which he guessed she’d modelled after Natasha Kerensky like so many had over the years.  It took him several moments to realize who the woman was she’d aged more than the years that had passed he could now see as his eyes adjusted to the darkness that her left eye had been replaced with a cybernetic one which was coloured blue like her natural eye.

â€œMisara is that you?”  He asked slowly moving his finger from the laser pistol’s trigger.

â€œAff, Riko, it is good to see you again.”

â€œAnd you, how did you get here?”

â€œI arrived in the Inner Sphere approximately six months ago and I arrived on Gallery with the Sea Fox transport this morning.”

â€œOur people are in the Sea Fox Clan?”  He asked it was a revaluation to him, he hadn’t realized there were potential allies so close.  Each cell of their society was locked off from the others with contact kept to a minimum.

â€œOur people are everywhere.  I take it that things are progressing well here, quiaff?”

â€œAffirmative, the Kharon and Puma S sales continue to bring in resources for the Mountain Wolves resources that we continue to use to develop new weapons to target our enemies."  He said naming the BattleMech and OmniMech which the Mountain Wolves primarily produced on Gallery the majority of their current production was sold to the Commonwealth and to the Fire Mandrills in the Rim Collection.  "We have also finished work on a new Long Range Missile carrier to support ground forces and sell to our hosts in the Commonwealth.  As they have Clans on every border, they buy lots of weapons and ask little questions it has been quite a boon for our people.”

â€œAnd your control over the warriors?”

â€œAbsolute” he said confidently even though he didn’t trust them he knew he controlled them.  “When the majority of the Clan rejoined Clan Wolf it devastated our ability to maintain the genetic diversity needed for a Trueborn program as a result we have an increased number of freeborns in our Touman, few of which have the political knowledge to challenge the status quo.”  He explained “a few of our younger members have agitated under the exile we have found ourselves in on this world desiring to fight and defeat enemies of the Mountain Wolves and of the Lyran people but we have been able to keep these desires in check with their able leaders falling to unfortunate accidents.”

â€œAnd the warriors have not questioned these accidents, quineg?”

â€œWhen most of them are near the end of their career or just out of their cannister they barely have any idea on what is going on.”  He said confidently finally putting the pistol away and moving around his desk “we control the Mountain Wolves entirely as you do the Homeworlds.”

â€œNot quite” she admitted looking at the floor for a moment “the Clans continue to resist efforts in the Homeworlds and our people have been unable to draw them into a final conflict.”  She said “instead we believe we need to use what you have researched here in your special section” she explained Riko Danvers eyes widened in surprise, while he had tried to get the Lyrans to use the weapon when they hadn’t they’d given the go ahead he’d drawn back from its development, “we will target a population centre on Fasa, somewhere we know they will be and have it run through their population.”

â€œIt… it has not been tested like that, it was not part of the plan we had aimed to target the Iron Wombs, I have no idea what the effect will be on a primarily freeborn population.”  He stammered shocked at what she had suggested his people had developed the weapon yes but to release them into a general population had not been part of the plan instead they had planned to release it into their enemies Iron Wombs slaughtering their future generations and contaminating their Bloodlines one at a time.

â€œThen test it!” She nearly shouted her anger boiling he was sure her cybernetic eye glowed red for a moment to reflect her rising temper.  “We need to know that it will effectively pass from person to person and between worlds, this is most important Riko we need that data we need it to hurt them.”

â€œI will have my people do simulations and give us data.”

â€œSimulations?”  Misara laughed out loud “you are in the Inner Sphere Riko Danvers you have a wealth of worlds to target… pick one, but do not get caught.”  She warned rising from the chair “I’ll return soon Riko, you had better get that data for us, time is short for all of us.  Now your continued life depends on it.”  She warned him “otherwise if you are unable to pick a target, I will ensure that one of my people release your little plague here among your population and we’ll get the data anyway.”  She threatened leaving the room before he could get answer.  He couldn’t track her down without rising suspicion and she knew it, he needed to work fast or everything he’d built here would come crashing down around him.

Naval Battle, Sovereign (Sovereign-class Carrier)
Winfield, Woodbine PDZ
Draconis March, Federated Suns
28th February 3115

Two Clan Snow Raven WarShips had jumped into the Winfield system surprising a Federated Suns WarShips and the Fourth Crucis Lancers RCT who were preparing for an attack against the Raven Alliance.  This attack was designed to distract the AFFS as Snow Raven forces launched an attack on Kilbourne tying up AFFS forces while the Ravens invaded.  The combined firepower of the Ravens had destroyed the FSS Bravery, a Federated Suns First Prince II-class Battleship, and now they were hunting down the ground forces DropShips.

Standing on the bridge of the Snow Raven vessel Sovereign, the first Sovereign-class Carrier which had been commissioned into the Snow Raven navy, Star Captain Hakke Sukhanov watched the Federated Suns counter-attack unfold.  In the Snow Raven Touman Hakke Sukhanov was considered to be a Ristar and had been tipped as a potential warrior for Khanship in the future for himself Hakke Sukhanov ignored such claims.  “Warn the Spartan that the Federated Suns have assault transports in that attack, they should expect boarding parties!”  He warned watching the AFFS LAM and aerospace fighter force throw themselves into their attack against the Spartan and its aerospace wing “instruct our fighters to assist them!”  He commanded the Sovereign had moved around the wreckage of the Bravery and it was attempting to get back into position to support the other Raven WarShip which was when the Fourth had launched its attack ‘they know they are done for but they intend on making us pay for it.’ Sukhanov thought watching as DropShips followed the fighters and LAMs with enough forces in an area a ship could get onto a WarShip and if they did that then all bets were off.

â€œHelm bring us into a broadside position with the Spartan” Sukhanov commanded as the vessel began to approach the ongoing battle “weapons to target their DropShips, bring them all down” he said watching as LAMs landed on the Spartan converting into their Mech configuration they targeted the vessel’s hull opening it for Battle Armoured troopers to drop directly from the DropShips into the vessel.  The Sovereign’s weapons brought down three DropShips in rapid succession but the damage was done and Sukhanov could see the Spartan had now been boarded by dozens of Battle Armour troopers.  These brave soldiers had sacrificed themselves distracting the Ravens from finishing off the other ground forces less than two combined regiments would escape the Raven attack crippling the RCT but now the Ravens were about to pay an unacceptable cost.  Watching the attack continue Sukhanov breathed deeply before speaking “weapons target the Spartan with an intent of destroying the vessel.”  He commanded for several moments afterwards you could hear a pin drop on the command deck but the crew did as he asked.  Sukhanov continued to be focused on the Holotank image watching as the Spartan began to slowly list to the port suggesting that there had been an interruption to helm control.  “Anything on the status of the crew?”

â€œContinued fighting onboard Star Captain Sukhanov some explosions are coming from within the vessel.” One of the bridge crew suggested as data continued to be gathered on the seven hundred-and-ten thousand ton WarShip.  They were sitting less than three kilometres from the ship and the Sovereign was powerless to assist their Clankin on the other vessel.  Both ships had been damaged in the fight with the Bravery but they should have been able to resist the ground forces counter-assault, the crew of the Spartan should not have allowed them to get close enough to board their ship, as the more heavily armed vessel the Spartan had been the ship that they had targeted Sukhanov was impressed by their bravery after seeing their WarShip destroyed by Snow Raven fire.

â€œLoss of contact with Spartan bridge crew!”

“Continued fighting onboard the ship!”

“LAM craft abandoning the vessel and turning towards us!”

Rapid fire reports came through the bridge one by one as Sukhanov stood and watched AFFS forces were attempting to turn their attention now on the Sovereign classing the Spartan as no longer a threat which meant one of two things.  Firstly, that the Spartan had been captured by the invaders or secondly that the vessel was close to destruction Sukhanov had already decided that if the first had happened then he was going to ensure that the second eventuality also happened.

“Gunnery crews, defend us from incoming threats with conventional and sub-capital weapons” Sukhanov ordered “none of them are to close on our vessel.”  He initially ordered “communications try Spartan’s bridge again.”

“No communications, sir, it is possible the transceiver has been damaged.”  The crewman suggested but Sukhannov could see that the Spartan was no longer firing on AFFS targets allowing the remaining fighters to concentrate on the Snow Raven fighters in the area.

“General broadcast for our forces” Sukhanov ordered then after a moment “all Snow Raven vessels in the vicinity of the Spartan clear the space, I repeat clear the space, any Sovereign crew receiving this message are ordered to abandon their ship.”  He said allowing the message to be passed out and understood he watched as the Spartan continued to spin showing no sense of control.  There was also more importantly no counter command to his from the ship, the crew of the Spartan unable to answer him, which made his next decision easier “weapons positions, fire at will on the Spartan, destroy that ship.”

While weapons fire continued to be directed in the defence of the Sovereign from incoming aerospace forces the majority of the WarShips weapons now turned onto their former sister ship.  Naval versions of the BattleMech’s particle cannon spat out from the Sovereign’s weapons positions and tore through the Spartan’s armoured hull.  At this range it was impossible for the crewmen to miss the uncontrolled vessel and particle cannon blasts burned away the armour plate by plate tearing pieces off of the vessel.  Able to coordinate and concentrate their fire the gunners onboard the Sovereign penetrated the Spartan’s armour within two salvos exploiting damage already done by the FSS Bravery and the boarding actions.  Close to the hull of the Spartan a Federated Suns Stinger LAM was vapourized for being in the wrong place at the wrong times as a particle cannon blast tore through the fighter as it slammed into the WarShip beyond.  While the inside of a WarShip was designed to resist damage like the outside of the vessel there was only so much that the vessel could take and the continuous attack by the Sovereign took its tole on the ship.  Even as the Sovereign continued to fire the Spartan’s reactors lost containment and the vessel was consumed by an expanding fireball with explosions sending parts of the Spartan across the jump point.  In time those fragments would fall into Kilbourne’s star and burn up one last time.

With the destruction of the Spartan complete and the Sovereign’s defences holding the remains of the Fourth Crucis Lancers scattered attempting to return to the surface of the planet their forces harried all the way.  The Sovereign recovered as many survivors as they could from the Spartan, the remaining aerospace fighters and surviving DropShips before leaving the system.  From Winfield the surviving elements of the Fourth Crucis Lancers travelled and joined the First Crucis Lancers on Woodbine combining with that command.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Throne Room
Imperial City, New Samarkand
Draconis March, Federated Suns
1st March 3115

Standing in front of Coordinator Hirohito Kurita, the leader of the Draconis Combine, Gunji-no-Kanrei Kaimoto Inokashira knew that he had failed and that his life was forfeit.  The Coordinator could not spare him for this most recent failure he and the Coordinator had been successful many times recently but this failure was unacceptable.  Standing with his head bowed lower than he normally would Kaimoto delivered the end of his report.

“While we have success in the Glenmora, Tallmage and Fairfield systems, New Ivaarsen, Dobson and Le Blanc.  Glenmora, Tallmage and Fairfield systems and we have retaken Benjamin and the Ludwig system.  Unfortunately, the District of Dieron seized Umjiri, Katapha and Junction before our troops could move in.”  Kaimoto Inokashira said bowing even lower the failure to seize three systems before the break away district was another failure which the Coordinator was making him retell.

“The status on Benjamin?”

“After four years of Federated Suns occupation” Inokashira reported from his extended bow “there is little on Benjamin that resembles the world that was taken.  The Federated Suns levelled Fort Shadra, destroyed the Osaka Training Fields and we believe moved the Whitworth Specialty Manufacturing Complex to an unknown location along with the relocation of all of the companies registered employees.”  He said making his report the loss of the factory was a minor one the design had not kept up with modern advances in technology if the Federated Suns wished to waste resources in continuing to build them the Coordinator would not stop them.

“Continue” he commanded not leaving his throne chair

“The lack of resistance in the so-called Benjamin Salient was explained when our forces entered the New Ivaarsen system…” Inokashira said pausing still remained in his bowed position unsure if the Combine wished to hear the rest.

“Continue, in your own words Gunji-no-Kanrei”

“Hai!”  He said answered his Coordinator’s command “on entering the New Ivaarsen system we expected to encounter a WarShip and both New Ivaarsen Regiments.”  He explained “intelligence failed to notice that the Davion Assault Guards and Davion Light Guards were also transiting the system after being driven back by our forces.”  He said trying to make it sound like a victory unfortunately the both knew that the Federated Suns had given up Benjamin due to the Draconis Combine threatening Robinson.  “The Federated Suns forces were prepared for us and fell on the DCS Vincent Kurita, the DCS Osumi and the DCS Shohei Maru.  While our vessels did destroy one of the Federated Suns WarShips and several DropShips all three vessels were forced to sacrifice themselves to save our JumpShips and ground forces.   Our ground forces have returned to our territory and are ready to join the assault on Robinson.”

“Which now teeters on the brink of being impossible thanks to the presence of these elite RCTs and their WarShips being within jumping distance.  How did intelligence fail to realize that the Federated Suns units had retreated from Benjamin?”

“We believe the Federated Suns employed a ruse similar to that of what the Draconis Combine did during the Clan War when facing Clans Smoke Jaguar and Star Adder.  They employed minefields, fixed artillery, dozens of IndustrialMechs and modified vehicles to man fire bases to make them appear to be fully defended when in fact they were not.  While Special Forces teams were employed to in fact strike at the invasion forces early and get their attention before disappearing into the wilderness.”

“I want them hunted down and killed.”

“Several teams have already been killed they made no attempt to surrender or escape the world instead attacking our people when they encountered them, we believe the AFFS left them behind intentionally, this was a suicide mission.”

“You know what these losses mean to the Draconis Combine?”  Coordinator Hirohito Kurita asked the man remained bowed and did not answer.  “By your order you have caused the deaths of thousands of our people and by your order you will wipe the stain from our nation.  Disband the Vincent Kurita Naval Flotilla as your last act as my Gunji-no-Kanrei and then you know what must be done?”

“Hai!”  He answered simply the Coordinator was allowing him the honourable way out to pass one last set of orders and then to commit seppuku, the final act of a disgraced warrior ritual suicide.

“Then be gone, fulfil my orders.”  He ordered hours later the Gunji-no-Kanrei was dead by his own hands and those of his closest aide.  Over the course of the next few days more than a dozen of his personnel staff had also committed seppuku for their failures to the Gunji-no-Kanrei, to the Coordinator and to the Draconis Combine.  By the order of Coordinator Hirohito Kurita, the former commander of the Ghost Regimental Division Marissa Michika became the new Gunji-no-Kanrei of the Draconis Combine making her the first woman to hold the post.

Trial of Possession
The Rack, Stone Spirit Territory
3rd March 3115

Following attacks into their territory Clan Sea Fox punish the Lyran Commonwealth in several ways firstly they withdraw their entire trade fleet from the Lyran Commonwealth sending it into the nations surrounding the Commonwealth.  Even Stone Spirit space which was considered to be little more than a bandit kingdom by the Clans saw Sea Fox traders appear on their worlds following the withdrawal from Lyran space with the Clansmen even honouring the Stone Spirits with an honour trial in The Rack system where the Seventh Cruiser Cluster win control over the system.  The Sea Fox’s first action once gaining control of the system is to rename it Port Vail, the name in which the world had been known during the First Star League.

While not classed as a trade embargo officially without Sea Fox traders inside their nation the only Clan technology available in Lyran merchants is that which is produced in the Lyran Commonwealth, mainly by the Mountain Wolves, and that which is taken in combat.

Capellan Raid-in-Force, Outside City of Argo
New Aragon, Bell PDZ
Capellan March, Federated Suns
9th March 3115

â€œWith respect Duchess, we must retreat from this world!”  Jiang-jun Dan Gun said looking at the Duchess.  Gun was the former commander of the Eighth Capellan Armoured Cavalry.  Former because the Eighth had fallen on this world to the guns of the Fifth Syrtis Fusiliers RCT and several mercenary bands that harried them.  Off to the side Jiang-jun Niklas Turunen the commander of Duchess Zeia Liao’s own Red Lancers stood off shaking his head warning Gun that Zeia Liao was not in the mood for this argument.

â€œNo Jiang-jun, with your surviving forces and those of the Nineteenth Liao Lancers the ranks of the Red Lancers have swelled we have more than enough forces to destroy the Fifth Fusiliers once and for all!”  She said angrily turning towards the planning table in the which sat in the centre of their circular command tent.

Duchess Zeia Liao had led three Capellan Confederation regiments supported by two WarShips through four Davion held systems crushing militia and mercenary forces along the way in a tour of destruction retaliating against the Federated Suns for the death of her sister Madison.  But here on New Aragon the rage that the Capellans felt had burned out as they encountered an elite AFFS unit which was more than ready for them and equipped for an extended battle.  The Fifth was dug into several positions on New Aragon around the capital city of Argo the Regimental Combat Team had held firm when confronted by the Capellan Forces knocking them back during their counter-assault.  The Fifth had then done what elite forces were capable of and turned a defence into a full offensive pushing through Capellan defences as their counter-attack turned into a full line assault.  The charging Davion forces had first turned their attackers left flank which was held by the Nineteenth Liao Lancers.  The unit had crumbled under sustained heavy fire with its survivors streaming through the lines of the other Capellan regiments in disarray with the Fifth behind them baying for Capellan blood.  With the forces so intermingled the Capellan naval forces in the system were unable to interfere with the ground battle for fear of destroying their own Duchess the Eighth Cavalry had blunted the Fifth’s rampage through Capellan lines but the damage was done combined the Nineteenth or Eighth could field no more than two combined arms battalions less than a quarter of their original strength.  The Red Lancers had gotten off lighter and now stood even stronger than their original strength with the inclusion of the survivors from the other units.

As Zeia Liao stepped back towards the table the Duchess nor her bodyguards saw what was coming next as Dan Gun at fifty-two years of age swung a lighting fast chop which struck the back of Zeia Liao’s neck.  The blow struck the short lightly built woman and she crumpled into a heap unconscious but alive, just as Dan Gun had planned.  Behind him two guards drew their weapons and fired several shots into his back several of which penetrated his personal armour and body.  As he sunk to his knees Dan Gun knew that his life was soon to end, he looked up at Niklas Turunen as blood began to trickle down his face from his mouth.  “You’re in command now, do the right thing, protect our duchess.”  He whispered before several more bullets hit his body ending his life.  He whispered before slumping to the ground dead.  A medical team rushed in to tend for their duchess who still laid unconscious.  Within hours all Capellan forces on planet were abandoning their defences and returning to their DropShips leaving New Aragon with DropShips, fighters and naval gunfire protecting their retreat and keeping the Fifth Syrtis Fusiliers RCT back.  Liao Madness had brought the Capellans to this system and now the bravery of one man, who knew his life was over after he watched his regiment fall, had acted to ensure that some of the attack forces could escape.

In retaliation to the Fifth’s resistance on New Aragon and his daughter’s death fighting Clinton’s Cutthroats, Chancellor Dao-Shen Liao orders a surgical strike against Sarna targeting the unit that had killed Madison Liao.  In the Inner Sphere where engagements between nations and planets were so common sons and daughters died every day but rarely were those losses felt so high up in a nation’s leadership.  On the 19th March 3115 two unidentified Capellan Confederation WarShips jumped into the Sarna system bombarding six separate AFFS military bases intent on crushing the Clinton’s Cutthroats and any other resistance on the planet.  Thousands died in the bombardment with several wildfires started in the Sarna mountains that would go on for weeks after the attack but unfortunately for the Capellan forces the Cutthroats had already left the system.  Instead, the Capellan WarShips found they themselves under attack as dozens of capital missiles were fired from the surface of Sarna at the two vessels fired from silos buried deep within the mountains of Sarna.  Both vessels sustained several missile hits each but they were able to retreat before AFFS forces could capitalize on the damage.

Dig Site
Riken Minor, Rigil Kentarus
Star League Protectorate
23rd March 3115

For three months the combined Star League and Interstellar Expeditions team had excavated the huge doors that covered the access point which they hoped led into the recently discovered fortification.  Discovered by a passing SLDF WarShip the base was completely recessed into the surface of Rigil Kentarus moon and had laid undiscovered for centuries.  Unused during the Amaris campaign the facility had laid hidden during the various conflicts that had plagued the Inner Sphere.

Dressed in a grey coloured suit with matching sun hat Dr Ruben Urtubi walked into the massive five hundred metre across domed tent which the dig crews used as shelter during their work.  Originally from Mexico on Terra Urtubi was used to the heat felt during the day on Riken Minor but some of his colleagues were not hence the tent.  There were massive access doors in the roof of the tent which allowed construction workers to pull large finds out for study elsewhere.  Inside he saw that the crews and their four ConstructionMechs working on the site were waiting for him approaching he saw his lead assistant Monica Meio step out from the crowd.  She like him was from Terra originally coming from the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre she was nearly thirty years younger than him at only twenty-nine years she had dark skin and thick dark curly hair which she wore tied back in a tight ponytail.

â€œWe made it doctor, we have uncovered the access doors fully.”  She said greeting him

â€œGood, very good” he said walking with her towards the facility greeting his co-workers as they approached “are the lifters in position?”  He asked as he reached the pit kneeling down to look at the massive armoured doors which his crews had uncovered.

â€œWe have four ships ready to assist us when we are ready.”  She said “even if we wanted to blow open the doors, I do not believe we could.”

â€œI wouldn’t even if I was held at gun point.  The Star League may be in a rush for us to uncover this place following the fall of Zosma but to rush would millions in revenue and ruin the whole reason we are here.”  He said his group were here specifically because of Clan Wolf’s recent successes the fall of the Zosma system was just the most recent success of the Clan driving the Fourth Knights of the Inner Sphere from the system and shattering a WarShip in the process.  The Star League defenders had taken one of the Wolf vessels with them but the loss of the system was one more blow for the Protectorate.  Now the SLDF hoped to use this place as a fortress, a roadblock, to stop the incoming Clan charge.  If they could get it operational “Call in the cranes!” he called out “we’ll attach here and here” he explained pointing to the top corner on one side of the door “and the same at the other end.  Four pull points as we open our prize.”  He said looking up at the workers around him to smiles.

As he was speaking the doors on the roof opened and powerful wires were lowered to the ground from four airships which hovered above the facility.  Due to Riken Minor’s low gravity the airships made for the perfect lifting machines capable of lifting far more than they could on a world with heavier gravity.  It took them two hours to securely attach the wires and then another hour on top for them to take the strain of the lift and then another agonizing hour of lifting from the four craft opening the one-hundred-metre-long doors.  Each time the doors were pulled a little further open they made a loud cracking noise as they were forced open against the ancient mechanism’s wishes exposing the cavern inside to fresh air.

Even as the doors opened Urtubi and his team were crawling over the opening trying to see what was being uncovered inside.  Immediately they knew that they had hit the jackpot with this particular door as inside the cavern they could see the image of an ancient Drost-class Transport DropShip “in the first room!”  Urtubi thought excited by the find primitive even in the Star League-era the Drost was primarily an infantry and cargo carrying vessel which wouldn’t exactly set the Inner Sphere on fire with it being found but the vessel looked like it was in a near perfect condition and it had laid here unseen for centuries and it could be only the first in thousands of finds for Urtubi and his people.

Before the doors were even fully open Urtubi, Meio and several others had begun dressing in safety harnesses ready for the two hundred metre drop to the bottom of the launch bay aiming to land near the nose of the Drost.  “After you, Doctor” Meio said smiling to him when the two of them were finally ready to enter the bay below Urtubi smiled and then stepped off the edge and the others in his party began to lower him down, it was a slow process and as he was lowered Urtubi took dozens of pictures taking in the whole experience.  The launch bay appeared to be in near perfect condition while the Drost in comparison seemed quite weathered, the vessel had obviously been used extensively and had worked a long hard career.  It also, Urtubi noted, did not have any SLDF markings instead it featured a red and black jester’s head with eyes peering off to the left-hand side a large hooked nose and a had a chinless manacle smile.  It was a mystery that Urtubi would gladly solve.

â€œOh, meu Deus!” Monica Meio exclaimed as she landed several metres behind him still attached to his safety lines Urtubi turned and saw what she had seen a skeleton dressed in a tattered mercenary uniform that featured the same jester’s head that was on the DropShip.  Beside the body laid a what appeared to be a vintage 10mm Heavy Pistol from the SLDF while beside it lay a pen and a stained note.

Urtubi stood beside the body careful not to touch the body or the note “Welcome to Castle Centaur” he said out loud so his harnesses microphone could pick up the find and leave his hands free to move “the locals do not want guests; the Succession Wars are not their concern.”  He said reading further “I’m struggling to read the last part he said into his recorder looks like “the locals… those ********… do not believe the war is their problem, but now we are here… we will not be leaving, we can’t… they are hiding in this bunker with their traps to defend them” Urtubi said “I hope you have better luck than us.”

â€œHe killed himself” Monica whispered looking at Urtubi who nodded that was his thought as well.  “But why?  They have weapons, the DropShip has weapons, they could have forced their way out or further into the facility?”

â€œIt sounds like whomever occupied this place was well dug in.”  Urtubi said raising from the skeleton “my guess is they themselves were hiding from someone when they first came here” Urtubi said looking at the DropShip seeing that some of the dings which he’d seen and thought were from hard work looked like weapon fire damage.  “Maybe once they were down, they had nothing to get themselves back into the air even if they could get out.”

â€œYou don’t think the locals could still be here?” She asked in wonder.

â€œWe are here to find out” Urtubi said stepping over to a nearby door finding it freezing to the touch “we’ll uncover your mysteries Castle Centaur.”  He said as others landed inside the bay there had been no resistance to them opening the doors and none now that they were in the facility so Urtubi felt confident the place was now abandoned.

Within hours however he had an answer to the SLDF’s quest on whether the facility would be useful to them in their defence of the Inner Sphere.  All four access corridors into the hanger were flooded completely scans suggested that they had been intentionally flooded by defence mechanisms built into the facility.  Even if half of the corridors were filled with water the facility would be of little use.  They were inside Castle Centaur but it was only the beginning of a very long process of gaining access to it.

Planetary assault
Beuller, Robinson
Draconis March, Federated Sun
25th March 3115

In the sky over Robinson there was a titanic explosion as a WarShip entered the atmosphere in an uncontrolled manner there was no sense of celebration as the ship and its crew perished.  Four WarShips had been assigned to the worlds defence now three of them had been lost fighting against the invading Draconis Combine forces including the Avalon II-class Cruiser the FSS Lucian Davion II which had just fallen.  Together the Davion WarShips and their support vessels had destroyed three of the six attacking WarShips delaying the invasion by several days giving the ground troops time to prepare and dig in but that had not been enough.

Now with air superiority over Robinson DCMS forces were dropping through the atmosphere towards the three regiments that waited for them the invasion was not uncontested with several wings of aerospace fighters from the defending RCTs contesting each of the landings but there was simply too many DCMS fighters and DropShips to stop them all.  The remaining AFFS WarShip in the system, the Vincent Davion-class Destroyer FSS Lancaster, was still operational feeding information to a relief force via HPG giving the AFFS forces an advantage.

The relief forces made up of battle-hardened units that had fallen back out of the occupied “Benjamin Sailent” area were en-route and would be here within the fortnight meaning that the ground forces on Robinson had to resist for a short period of time.  Unfortunately, the DCMS knew that their time on Robinson would likely be limited as well which led to their first targets being the Sandoval Family’s home, the Robinson Battle Academy and Robinson Metal Works intent on destroying all three targets before further AFFS troops could arrive.  This invasion was not about occupying Robinson instead it was intended on doing to the Federated Suns what was done to them with the world of Benjamin.  Benjamin had been a District capitol before the AFFS invaded and occupied the world as the Draconis Combine had been unable to retake the world quickly the AFFS had been able to strip it of every valuable industry and every piece of military hardware leaving a husk of a world with only the capability to sustain its own people.  Now the DCMS wanted to turn that back on the Federated Suns and reduce Robinson to the same capability only in a shorter time period.  To hasten these actions the DCMS first used their surviving WarShips and air superiority to bombard the targets from above.
On the ground the First Robinson Rangers RCT, the McKinnon’s Raiders Regiment and the Eighth New Avalon Guards RCTs all threw themselves forwards at the invading units trying to defend the world ignoring the threat of orbital artillery intent on resisting to their last against them five DCMS Regiments.

Meeting Room, Large Gravity Deck
Bel Amica Station (Snowden-class), Trinity Moons
District of Lesnovo, Free Worlds League
27th March 3115

Onboard the fifty-one-thousand-ton Snowden-class space station Bel Amica Khan Petra Furey leader of Clan Smoke Jaguar and of the District of Lesnovo marvelled at the sight hidden from view few people even knew the Trinity Moons had such a station hidden away deep within their network of moons.  According to the reports she had read the people of the system had purchased the space station from the Taurian Concordat more than a century before and then transported it via JumpShip to this system.  They now used it as their primary construction hub having removed the ore processing equipment the mining station was built around and replaced it with a second pressurized dock capable of building small space stations or DropShips.

And now its presence had brought here JumpShip to this largely forgotten corner of the Free World’s League.  Even though the Trinity Moons had officially re-joined the Free World’s League decades before and they had three habitable moons orbiting the gas giant few people travelled here other than traders looking to purchase some of the systems natively built items.  For decades the system had built their Vulcan 6 and Commonality Space Stations, the primitive Vulcan aerospace fighter, a range of small craft and small DropShips which they had sold across the Free World’s League.
Now Furey had come here and she wanted the system to sign an exclusive contract with the District of Lesnovo to supply at least one Vulcan or Commonality space station for every system in the District, construct two new DropShips for their military one for transporting ground assets and one for aerospace patrol.  And to develop a new aerospace fighter based on the Vulcan Aerospace Fighter which would be upgraded with modern engines armour and weapons bought from Clan Sea Fox Furey had already picked a name for the new fighter the Miletus.  To pay for these vessels the District, and her Clan, would provide the people of the Trinity Moons with weapons and supplies and access to Clan technology.

The District needed these additional resources to combat the new trade tariffs being introduced by the Districts of Bowang and Regulus who believed that the District of Lesnovo was attempting to undercut them in the FWL markets and was causing tension within the nation with its near continuous raids against the Magistracy of Canopus.

Excalibur (Scimitar-class Missile Cruiser)
Hadrian’s Command, Crucis March
Federated Suns
31st March 3115

The seven hundred-and-seventy-thousand-ton Nova Cat WarShip Excalibur emerged into the system in a flash having travelled thirty light years in a moment.  The vessel was still painted in the deep red and black like the Avalon-class WarShip hull that the Nova Cat’s had built on from a distance the vessel would look exactly like the Federated Suns vessel it was pretending to be, and with the information that the Nova Cat Watch had seized the Identification Friend or Foe system of the vessel would make it appear to be a Federated Suns vessel on long range sensors.  Standing near the holotable in the centre of the vessel’s command room Star Admiral Alexandria Leroux was proud of her crew they were deep behind enemy lines and the crew had successfully navigated several habited systems without any issues from the planetary systems.  Federated Suns planetary leaders had ignored their transit through the systems even after the Excalibur spent four days in the MacIntosh system and they hadn’t been communicated with instead they’d recharged their KF core and jumped clear of the system continuing their journey.

â€œAre we where we expected to be?”  Leroux asked out aloud

â€œAffirmative Star Admiral” navigator Allan responded from his station “we are fourteen hundred metres from our expected point of arrival.” While that sounded like a lot considering the vessel had just travelled from one system and into another the distance was a tiny one, she could hear the pride in his voice and he deserved to be happy with their work.

â€œSensor contact on the port side within weapons range, one Peter-class Scout vessel, war book suggests it is the FSS Inquisitor.”  Crewman Sarah reported from her station manning the sensor system.

â€œWeapons, destroy that vessel now!”  Alexandria Leroux ordered.  Her command was carried out wordlessly with a salvo of naval-class lasers and autocannon being fired from the cruiser at the far smaller Federated Suns vessel.  The amount of firepower used by the Excalibur was overkill for the five-and-a-thousand-ton vessel penetrating the vessel’s hull mid-way across its upper hull the salvo of autocannon fire tore through the vessels structure shattering it. “Good work, sensors reorientate onto the shipyard facilities gather as much information as we can.” She said congratulating the crews as the Inquisitor’s hull began to expand the remaining pieces of its hull being slowly caught by the star’s gravity in time the entire vessel would fall into the star and be lost.  “Communications, open a channel so the entire system can hear me.”  She said as she saw the Excalibur’s sensors more deeply scanning the shipyard facilities in the system the Nova Cat spy had found this system but its exact composition was unknown.

â€œYou are on Star Admiral” Andrei said from the communications station.

â€œThis is Star Admiral Alexandria Leroux onboard the Clan Nova Cat WarShip Excalibur.  Your nation has shown it is capable of resisting Clan Nova Cat.”  She said reading the information the ships sensors were picking up five construction slips at the shipyard, one constructing a massive WarShip which was tentatively identified by the Excalibur’s sensors as a Mercury-class WarShip, beside them were several large habitats and warehouse facilities as well as aerospace launch facilities.  Around them were dozens of DropShips and beyond appeared to be mining facilities they could spend months studying even this small glimpse into the Federated Suns “secret system.”  “My message to you is nothing in your nation is hidden from Clan Nova Cat and we will strike across the stars where and when we wish.”  She said looking at Andrei she drew her hand across her throat cutting the channel.  “They know who struck them, transfer power from the LF battery and take us out of the system before we get a stronger response.  A true battle is not our mission today.”  She commanded within the end of the hour the vessel had jumped clear of the system while the defenders scrambled to prepare for a defence that was not needed.

Elsewhere in the Federated Suns Nova Cat forces crossed the border invading the systems of Zolfo, Des Aro and Hoyleton engaging various elements of the Third Crucis Lancers RCT which was spread over the area supporting local militia forces and mercenary units.  Intent on ensuring that the Third could not mount any sort of major response the First Nova Cat Guards Cluster targeted the Third’s command base on Tsamma challenging them to an honour trial for a pair of RFL-X3 Rifleman MUSE WIND BattleMechs which the unit was testing.  The two Mechs had been refitted with Clan armour and weapons and were planned by the Federated Suns to be the basis for new variants of the ancient BattleMech.  As the MUSE WIND refurbishment already had so much Clan tech already featured in it the Nova Cats saw the design as a potential refit, they could use for their own Rifleman BattleMechs, many of which they had originally captured from the Federated Suns.

During the battle on Tsamma the Clan duelling rules of Zellbrigen are rapidly violated by the Federated Suns troops who intend on using their superior numbers of infantry and vehicles to overwhelm the elite Nova Cat unit.  Unfortunately, this also allowed the Nova Cat Guards to concentrate their own fire and employ unconventional tactics against the Davion unit.  Over recent years the unit had begun to become lighter than a traditional Guards type cluster a change made largely by its leader Star Colonel Victoria Fokker, the only person to hold that Raven bloodname in the Clan, who herself piloted a Kestrel OmniMech.  Combining the speed and firepower carried by Clan built machines the used flanking manoeuvres combined with artillery and mass long range missile fire to crush the lighter units of the Lancers and turn their flanks finally surrounding their command elements forcing a surrender of the trial force.

Had it been a true invasion the Nova Cats would likely have had enough firepower to seize control over the world but that was not today’s intention, like the Excalibur’s mission across the Federated Suns the Nova Cats were proving to the Federated Suns that they could strike when and where they wanted and win.  The systems of Zolfo, Des Aro and Hoyleton would all become Nova Cat holdings as the remains of the Third Cruicis Lancers mustered on Tsamma following the Nova Cat withdrawal.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

This one's been held back a bit because I've been trying to write the spin off story "Foresight" and hit a bit of writer's block.  Instead I'm pushing forwards with the main storyline (from reading it you may have guessed I got TRO Irregulars this week  ;D)

The last bit was inspired a bit by the Sybil stories and others that have floated about a bit in the past.  But the reality behind those stories (at least as far as that Admiral knows)

Wolf Assaults
Star League Protectorate
1st April 3115

A rebuild Ninth Wolf Guard Cluster re-join Clan Wolf forces assaulting the Star League Protectorate assaulting the systems of Shiloh and Wing.  Due to the presence of two Star League Special Operations Teams on Wing Star Colonel Alaric Ward leads the majority of his Cluster to Wing while the remains of his Cluster along with support elements from the Tenth Wolf Irregulars Cluster assault Shiloh.

The assault on Wing sees the first victory for the rebuild Ninth Wolf Guard Cluster as the Second Special Operations Group are shattered in the victory and the Seventy-seventh Special Operations Group are forced off world after taking a beating delivered by the Wolves who wish to prove themselves.  Due to the presence of so many special operations operatives on the planet the Wolves deploy several Watch operative teams and heavy infantry support units to the world to hunt down any survivors.  As soon as the garrison forces arrive on planet the Ninth move on from the world heading for their next target.

Combat Air Patrol
Keystone, District of Marik
Free Worlds League
7th April 3115

In the last year Jeremy Kincaid-Cameron had flown several aircraft as he recovered from his injuries, he received on Vestallas but today he was back in a Huscarl OmniFighter flying in active duty for the Northwind Renegades.  During his time recuperating he had been promoted to Captain having shown an aptitude for the administration side of his duties as well as having the combat experience with his new rank he had a lot more responsibilities but they didn’t get in the way of his first love of flying an aerospace fighter.

His assignment to the Northwind Renegades had come as a surprise. The unit still held much of its traditions from when it was a mercenary command and still only rarely took on recruits from anywhere but the academies on Northwind or from those that shared blood with previous Highlanders.  When he arrived however Colonel Jeremiah Rose had made it quite clear that the Renegades didn’t hold as closely to those traditions as closely other units and that if he did his duty then he’d have no problems within his command.  A month in and so far, Rose was being proven right and Jeremy Kincaid-Cameron had begun to feel at home within the unit.

Today he was overseeing an SLDF operation supporting the construction of defences on Keystone and below them two Maruhanabachi Carrier Airships and several Tonbo and Bishop VTOLs were working to support the ground troops in their construction efforts.  Kincaid-Cameron turned his fighter to the right circling over the efforts below overseeing the work, today wasn’t a combat assignment just security and as a way of fitting in he was happy to take it.

“BREAK, BREAK, BREAK, CAP we’ve got an issue down here!”  Suddenly the message broke Kincaid-Cameron’s thoughts.

   “This is CAP, go ahead.”

“We’ve got a theft of a lance of StrongArm ConstructionMechs by a group of criminals.  Ground support cannot intercept them.  We need support.”

“Ground control, CAP Talon One, I have a pair of Huscarl fighters up here.  We can lay down support but you need to feed us targets or we’re going to make a heluva mess!”  He warned tightening his flight’s turn to keep them over the area and releasing the safeties on his weapons.

“Affirmative, Talon One, you have clearance from command to engage.  Target lance is heading east through sector six.  We’re releasing their IDs now, pursue and eliminate.”

“Understood” Kincaid-Cameron said taking a deep breath, so much for an easy security patrol where the hell were their ground support? “Talon Two, on my wing, you take both targets on right I have left understood?”  He asked the other pilot silently acknowledged his orders taking up the targets while the two fighters turned. “Mamma Bear One, Talon One, we’re travelling through your work space have all traffic aware we’ll be coming through at pace.”

“Talon One, Mamma Bear, understood good hunting.” The airship traffic controller acknowledged their move as the two Huscarls dived under the airships the two expert pilots avoiding flying VTOLs which were working in the area as they dived to the ground to track down the four stolen ConstructionMechs.  Now flying below one hundred feet they approached the four light ConstructionMechs at pace.  In tandem the two fighter pilots engaged with their autocannons and lasers splitting their weapons against the slow-moving targets.  Talon Two followed Kincaid-Cameron’s targeting aiming for one of the StrongArms legs each with the ConstrctionMechs moving slow there was no way for them to avoid the fire and the Huscarl’s heavy weapons fire rapidly fell.  One laser blast burned through one of the StrongArms legs burning into a nearby building but the collateral damage was light.  One of the other IndustrialMechs remained standing for a moment but Kincaid-Cameron added his ten-tube long-range missile launcher into the mix knocking down the Mech.

“Talon One, Mamma Bear, we’ve got four crippled construction Mechs I can see pilots attempting to get away heading off towards building one hundred metres to their east marking location.  We are not weaponized to target them send in ground pounders and recovery teams.”  He said feeding back to the orbiting Airship.

“Affirmative Talon One, good hunting.”  They responded as the two Huscarls began to rise into the air again returning to their patrol a surprise distraction but as Jeremy Kincaid-Cameron levelled his fighter again and continued the patrol.

Counter Attack
Draconis March, Federated Suns
10th April 3115

In an effort to cut the Draconis Combine supply lines the AFFS units near Robinson target Lucerne, Franklin and Betterdorf striking the three worlds that had been captured by the DCMS in their push towards Robinson.  Those forces on Robinson attempt to start destroying anything related to the Sandoval or Davion families while fighting the defending AFFS defenders.  In the Lucerne system the DCS Meiyo, Kyushu-class Frigate, and its attached LAM Regiment are obliterated trying to resist the FSS Ian Davion with the frigate completely outclassed by the Mercury-class Battleship.

Raid
Arc Royal, Jade Falcon OZ
15th April 3115

Three mercenary commands the Grey Death Legion, the Carlyle Family Guard and the Snord’s Irregulars combine to strike against the Jade Falcon held world of Arc Royal.  While all three units together combined number over two combined arms regiments they find two Elite Jade Falcon Clusters and several clusters of cadets on the world as Clan Jade Falcon have begun using the world as a training world.

While the Grey Death Legion and Carlyle Family Guard engage the Eight Falcon Dragoons Cluster the Snord’s Irregulars push the Sixth Falcon Eyrie Cluster out of the former land hold of the Kell Family allowing their scavenger teams access to the site for several hours.  Using multiple ConstructionMechs and heavy lift vehicles the Irregulars excavate a large area within the land hold specifically looking in one location eventually finding what they are looking for.

Buried deeply below the ruins of the Kell Family land hold they find a hidden hanger which would have only been known by the Kell Hounds themselves.  Inside are dozens of BattleMechs and armoured vehicles dating back to the succession wars.  While outclassed on today’s battlefield with refurbishment these Mechs would easily add an entire battalion to a combat force once prepared.

With the Grey Death and Carlyle family Guards as well as elements of the Irregulars hold off the Dragoons and Eyrie troopers the Irregulars evacuate the hidden cache to their DropShips before the three units withdraw to Coventry where the Kell Hounds had been based.

Having used the mercenary raid as a distraction the Kell Hounds themselves had combined with several other mercenary and house units to strike and reclaim the Krevci system for the Lyran Commonwealth.  Several weeks later the Kell Hounds pay the three units for their work on attacking Arc Royal, the commander of the Hounds Colonel Jeremy Kell had known if they were the ones to return to Arc Royal they would have stood and either liberated the world or ceased to be so they had hired the other units to assist them.  The Hounds took several artifacts from the recovered cache, most being Kell Hound heirlooms while the three other units took a heafty payment and salvage from the fighting back to their staging worlds.

SLDF Deployment
Star League Protectorate
29th April 3115

“Listen Governor please, these Drones are not alive!” Admiral Mark Cavannah stressed to the planetary governor who was angry at the deployment of four M5 Casper Drones to the defence of the system.  “The movie Tri-Vids about sentient WarShips defending humanity against Amaris and fighting forces that threaten us, I agree, are fantastic but they are FICTION!  It is beyond the capabilities of the original Star League and the current Star League to produce such craft.”  He said angrily looking at Planetary Governor Jordain Ariadness of Pacifica, or Chara as the star was known, he was by far one of the youngest Planetary Governors in the Star League Protectorate at thirty-two years he had a full head of blonde hair and blue eyes, if he hadn’t gone into politics Cavannah was sure the Governor would have been a poster boy for advertisement campaigns.  Unfortunately, while he was young, he was also a little backward in his thoughts about the drone technology and the Casper WarShips that were being deployed to the system.

“They are still WarShips without crews and without control!  My citizens are afraid these things will see them as a threat as the original Caspers turned on their creators.  My people hate the idea of them over their heads.”  He complained looking at the roof of the building as if it would be possible to see the Caspers through them, which was impossible.

“These WarShips are “Smart" they know how to fly around a star system, they will stop and interrogate IFFs of ships they don't know, but they wont fire on ships that don’t show hostile IDs or are not hostile to them.  Instead, they will ask for direction from your office and from the office of the local defence forces.”  Admiral Mark Cavannah explained “if your orders or those of the SLDF forces present conflict with their prime directive of defending this system, and defending the Star League Protectorate, they will contact Terra via their onboard HPGs for instruction.”  Cavannah explained.

“So, they will not follow my orders if “they” do not agree with them!”  He said angrily “these buggering machines will go to Terra over the local orders and threaten Pacifica with Terra’s desires” Ariadness said annoyed at the prospect.

“They will follow your orders as long as they are not contrary to the desires of the SLDF and the well being of the people of Cha… Pacifica” Cavannah said stumbling over the local name for the world.  “These Drones will do nothing to harm the people of this system you will not even have to supply them” Cavannah explained “we have deployed several DropShips with spare parts, ammunition and fuel.  If something goes wrong with these ships the Caspers will arrange a rendezvous autonomously without need for the people of Pacifica to assist them all of this is funded by Terra and the SLDF.”
“And through our taxes” Araidness pointed out.

“Yes, and through your taxes” Cavannah repeated “Governor, Clan Wolf is getting ever closer to this system.  They could jump in at any moment.  Now your system will not only be defended by the drones you have the Third Knights of the Sphere Regimental Brigade, two full Guard Regiments, the SLS Markov and SLS Caliburn you are hardly under defended.”  He explained Chara actually had one of the heaviest concentrations of SLDF forces after Terra with the addition of the Drone WarShips just adding to this force.  “We are dedicated to your defence Governor, the SLDF will not abandon you.”

“We are just one more wall that is between you and Clan Wolf, if we fall, you’ll have others.”

“We will but we will not abandon you to the Clansmen.”  Cavannah repeated trying to convince the man, Terra couldn’t afford to lose all its protection to the Wolves not with others closing their grip.  “Your system is not the only one to receive upgrades to their defences the systems of Graham and Zavijava will be receiving a similar defence force to your system.  The Star League are investing heavily in protection for your systems.”

“While Clan Wolf continue to naw and nibble at the Protectorates borders?”  Governor Jordain Ariadness “Pacifica has been on the borders of enemies for many years the Protectorate was supposed to bring stability, instead it feels like we have become a target.”

“A target that fights back Governor, the defences of Pacifica or Chara whatever you want to call yourselves this week, will rival that of Hesperus II, Tharkad and New Avalon.  You will have a net above your heads to protect you from the threats that are near us.  We will build a metal shield around our worlds and protect the people below them from the threats above.”  Cavannah said his voice full of passion “you have nothing to fear from us, the Star League is a home worth supporting and fighting for.”

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

I have had a little more time to write recently, it's been great so finally an update!

Planetary Assault
Alpheratz, Raven Alliance
Periphery
3rd May 3115

Standing on the bridge of the FSS Hanse Davion II, Fleet Admiral Jonathan Raikkonen watched as the other WarShips and JumpShips of his fleet jumped into the Alpheratz system; the capital system of the Raven Alliance.  After recent attacks which had seen the Raven Alliance secure six systems including the PDZ capital world of Woodbine the Federated Suns had classed the Clan/Periphery nation as a credible threat to the security of their periphery border.  The Alpheratz mission was a “Shock-and-Awe” strike designed to make the Ravens understand that striking into the Federated Suns would cost them more than they could afford.  Six WarShips, including the Hanse Davion II, and twelve JumpShips carrying two Regimental Combat Teams and four mercenary units had joined in the strike intended on forcing the Ravens to come to the peace table; or at the very least enter into a cease-fire.

Looking at his sensor system readouts Jonathan Raikkonen smirked seeing that the intelligence staff had got things right for once there were only four WarShips in the system… “Only” he quietly said to himself from the Holo-table in the CIC there was a time in the Inner Sphere that seeing ONE WarShip in your entire lifetime would have been a life changing experience.  Now in some systems that was still the case but with the numbers of vessels now available in the Inner Sphere it was becoming a far more common experience to see such vessels.  “Readouts on the vessels present.”  He ordered louder getting the attention of the room as he realized the only the four Recharge Stations that served the system were present at the Nadir and Zenith points and none of them were the targets of this attack.

“The Four Raven WarShips read as One Potemkin-class Troop Cruiser 100% confirmed as the Bontaventure, One Texas-class Battleship 93% confirmed as the Montbatton…”

“Hold report and confirm why the uncertainty?”

“Vessel’s profile does not match what our sensors recognize as a Texas-class vessel she’s been modified either cosmetically or with additional capabilities.”  The officer reported from his station “sir, our readings on the two Aegis-class vessels also read as 93% confirmed they have also been modified from the base design.”

“The Star League had several variations of the same WarShip in operation some of them look nothing like another vessel of the same class could our sensors be thrown off by what they are looking at?”  Raikkonen asked exploring options he’d flown in starships nearly his whole sixty-two years since his parents fled the Clan invasion of their native Free Rasalhague Republic and set up in the Federated Suns as crewmen onboard a trader JumpShip.  He’d been born in space just within the Federated Suns borders and been registered as a citizen as soon as his parents had landed on Addicks officially that planet served as his homeworld even though he’d spend less than a year on its surface in reality he was at home in space.

“Negative Admiral through the Star League we have records of all variations of Star League and Clan ships these variations in the Texas and Aegis class are unknown.”

“Understood, ladies and gentlemen I call for your attention, our duty is to get the ground-pounders onto the planet surface to do their work.  We will respect Clan dueling rules if they are willing to once, we are in communication range the Hanse Davion II will challenge the Montbatton regardless of what the Clans have done to her.  The Melissa Davion II will challenge one of the Aegis and the Jennifer Davion will challenge the other leaving the Jackson Davion to challenge the Potemkin should it be looking to join the battle.”  He explained the Jackson Davion would be heavily outgunned by the Potemkin should it be carrying a full set of DropShips however Raikonnen didn’t think the vessel would be used in this battle he’d make it clear that the Federated Suns were not here to claim the vessel in his challenge he wanted to rule it out of the battle quick.  “Our remaining WarShips will engage any aerospace defences around Alpheratz should the Ravens refuse Safcon, which we expect they will, our objective is not to cleanse life on Alpheratz our objective is to secure control over a settlement or a factory which will bring the Ravens to the negotiations table with the Federated Suns and end the conflict between our nations.  Understood?”

“Yes, sir!”  Came a resounding response from the crewmen in the system.

“Very well bring us into the system” he ordered across the fleet vessels began to accelerate away from the JumpShips at the Nadir point.

---

Five days later the Federated Suns fleet entered into the range of the defenders communications and Fleet Admiral Jonathan Raikonnen made his challenge.  “I am Fleet Admiral Jonathan Raikonnen the commander of the Federated Suns Fifth Fleet and of the WarShip FSS Hanse Davion II.  My vessel carries a proud name and stands to defend its nation I challenge another vessel with a proud name Clan Snow Ravens Montbatton to combat.  This is a solitary challenge to be resolved between myself as commander of the Hanse Davion II and the commander of the Montbatton my vessel against theirs let no other vessel enter.”  As he spoke the commanders of the Melissa Davion II and the Jennifer Davion issued their own challenges against the Lord Death and the White Terror these challenges were to be worded in a very particular way to get the attention of the Snow Ravens and for now to include nothing else.

“Response from Raven vessels are coming in, it’s the commander of the Montbatton.”

   “Put them on.”

“Fleet Admiral Raikonnen, welcome to the Alpheratz system, before we accept your challenge, we must know your purpose for being in this system?”  Came the response after the delay in transmission.

“We wish to end the conflict between the Raven Alliance and Federated Suns through honourable combat.  I have brought the additional WarShips for security and to allow the crews of your additional vessels to gain honour through battle.  Our ground forces will offer those troops you have on the ground that same honour with the understanding that we have no wish of conquest of your world, we bring no plans with us of conquest only to bring an end to the war between our nations as two martial nations should end a conflict.”  He offered giving the Ravens the words they needed he’d have preferred if they could show some force and speak with their enemies ending the conflict with worlds of peace but he knew that the Clansmen would need a battle to keep their warrior caste happy.

After several minutes a response came through the CIC’s speakers “This is Star Admiral Rayford McCorkell the commander of the Montbatton.  I accept the challenge from with Fleet Admiral Jonathan Raikonnen of the FSS Hanse Davion II with conditions.”  Onboard the Hanse Davion II Raikonnen glanced at his XO who nodded ready to note down what the Ravens were about to say “the Lord Death and White Terror are bound by these same conditions” McCorkell continued “firstly the Bontaventure is not included in the bid for this system if any ship enters within one hundred kilometres of that vessel then Zellbrigen will be classed as being broken and additional Snow Raven forces will join the battle.”  He said to himself Raikonnen nodded understanding and seeing that the Bontaventure was far outwith the engagement zone anyway.  “Second, ground forces are to land on the northern continent where they will engage Raven Alliance forces.”  He said continuing “third should any vessel signal its surrender during battle the opposing side is to accept that decision and not pursue the total destruction of their enemy.”

“I accept your terms and wish to request Safcon for my forces landing at the Northern Continent” Raikonnen asked knowing full well what the answer would be.

“Negative, to grant Safcon would mean the fighter pilots on the ground would miss out on the honour of engaging your forces.  Safcon will not be granted from any trial and should your WarShips approach Alpheratz they will be subject to Trials by aerospace defenders.”

“Well bargained and done” Raikonnen said ending the Clan Ritual showing them this respect would hopefully go a long way to helping cement any decision that came from it.

   “Well bargained and done”

---

Nine hours later the Hanse Davion II entered weapons range with the Montbatton and found their first surprise of the battle as four Kraken Telescopic Capital Missiles slammed into the Hanse Davion II’s hull the assault surprising and overwhelming the Battleship’s impressive anti-missile systems.  Within moments the FSS Jennifer Davion and FSS Melissa Davion II reported similar strikes as the Ravens revealed that they had copied the Inner Sphere invention and were now deploying them on their WarShips as well.

“So, the Ravens have kitted their ships out with some surprises.”  He said looking at the damage caused fortunately there wasn’t any obvious penetration of the hull.  Raikonnen cursed normally they would’t waste time with screen launchers until they’d seen the missiles fired but the Kraken’s had been fired before they even entered range and been controlled all the way to target. “Time for us to respond in kind, return fire as we enter range, deploy screens and move us in on them.”  Raikonnen ordered as they closed on the Snow Raven Battleship.  The Montbatton was designed to engage a target at range with a range of naval particle cannons, lasers and naval missiles its greatest weakness was its lack of directly forward-facing weapons and lack of missile defences.  While the First Prince Block II was also designed to engage at range with a host of Naval-class gauss rifles, lasers and missiles to throw back at the Clan vessel while also having a ring of screen launchers and anti-missile defences.  It was a slugging match which the newer designed First Prince-class should come out ahead of with its modern defences but after seeing the use of Kraken missiles by the Ravens Raikonnen was taking nothing for granted.

“Sir, naval missiles ineffective!”  The weapons station reported as the missiles reached their target the missiles had been fired probably at the same time as the Krakens had been fired but unlike the attack on the Federated Suns WarShip the missiles targeted on the Montbatton had failed to reach target.  “They have deployed screens and are employing anti-missile defences!”  He said looking over at the Admiral again as further Raven Krakens bore through the Hanse Davion II’s defences and slammed into its armoured hull.  With defences now active the attack was far less effective than before but it still wore into the vessel’s hull.

“Bring us onto their port flank, we’re going to have to close on them, use our capital missiles to support the DropShips and fighters they should have more.”

“Affirmative, Fleet Admiral” the officers replied as the ships range decreased the Hanse Davion II angled towards the Montbatton’s port flank as they closed the Clan vessel turned sharply away from them bringing its broadside of naval lasers to bear on the nose of the Hanse Davion II.  The Federated Suns battleship shuddered as the lasers bore into the vessel’s hull coupled with more lasers, autocannons and particle weapons.  Between the two vessels a dozen DropShips and over a hundred aerospace fighters engaged each other in close quarters fighting.

“Turn our nose off target, bring autocannons into play!”  Raikonnen ordered seeing the armour wear to the front of his vessel.  By turning they vessel, they brought their own broadside into play allowing several naval-class autocannons onto target.  Raikonnen was glad to see them wearing on the side of the enemy Texas even as the Montbatton continued to strike them. “Sensors, I want a detailed scan of the Montbatton if the Ravens have modified her in any further way I want to know!”  He ordered as the the Hanse Davion II rocked heavily from a new impact against the port side.

 “Report!”

“Armour breached caused by further Kraken impacts they’ve been targeting the port side with them our defences can’t hold them back!”  The Damage Control Officer (DCO) reported the Kraken was a special type of missile due to the Telescopic cameras which allowed the missile to be “piloted” by the gunners controlling it the Ravens had been coordinating their strikes targeting one section of the Hanse Davion II.  The missiles themselves were heavily armoured and designed to penetrate an enemy vessels defences and armour.

“Air boss, we need the aerospace squadrons to assist in missile defence, we can’t afford to keep taking hits like that!”

“Sir, all squadrons are fully engaged turning them off target now will cause losses!”  The man protested

“I know, but we’re going to lose this ship if they don’t!”  Raikonnen snapped “it’s a sacrifice but it’s one we need, give the damned order!”  He commanded turning to the helm station “give us a nose-broadside swing I want to hit them with our forward armament then turn back on them again!  Our armour can take it.”  As the ship began to turn aerospace fighters and DropShips continued to fight and die around the two ships they were like bugs beside a grand anima.

“We’re going to take a pounding” the helm officer commented but didn’t argue as he begun to swing the WarShip around onto it’s starboard side.  Naval lasers and particle cannons from the Montbatton tore into the WarShips flank and nose further damaging the Hanse Davion II’s armour.  The Federated Suns Battleship responded in kind with a volley of naval-class gauss rifles all while continuing the bombardment of naval autocannons and lasers.  As the Hanse Davion II turned back to display its broadside the Montbatton also shifted position sending a volley of heavy naval autocannon into the Battleship while further Kraken missiles slammed into its damaged port flank.

“Port Autocannons offline! Port links to engineering down!  Hull breach four decks! We’re losing atmosphere! Emergency protocols activated! Our armour is gone.”  The DCO shouted a warning the deployment of fighters and DropShips hadn’t been enough.

Raikonnen breathed heavily as the ship rocked again under bombardment. “Communications Officer, signal the Montbatton, the Hanse Davion II is willing to stand down.” He announced looking around the CIC “We are not surrendering to them this ship can still fight if they want to take us to destruction!”  He said defiantly “but this battle will not be determined up here, it will be determined by the boys and girls we have successfully escorted to the planet.”  He said looking at the sensor screens seeing DropShips carrying their ground forces enter the planet’s atmosphere of the WarShips that had escorted those ships it appeared the FSS Killing Blow had been crippled with its crew abandoning ship from what Raikonnen could make out the four hundred-and-twenty thousand tonne ship did not have the velocity to maintain orbit over Alpheratz; at least the Ravens had allowed the crew to abandon ship safely.

Launch site
Northern Continent/North Country, Alpheratz
Raven Alliance
9th May 3115

“Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen I’m Shakeel Hussein, of the Alpheratz New Freedom Journey, for the last six days and nights Alpheratz has been under attack by forces of the Federated Suns.”  The dark-skinned man in his forties said over the launch of a red-and-black coloured DropShip behind them his greying hair highlighted by the flare from the DropShip’s engines.  “What started with a naval battle just outside orbit continued below on our planets surface.  But this, this was like no battle our people have faced before.”  He said “the Federated Suns forces came here to fight an ‘honour battle’ against the forces of the Raven Alliance.  In a battle which was more like a large duel than a battle of conquest the Federated Suns forces and those fighting for our nation engaged in fifteen battles across the North Country.  Each of these individual battles had very distinct victory conditions with both sides meeting before the battles and agreeing what factors would lead to a victory.  In all the conflicts that I have witnessed in my time as a new correspondent this was perhaps the most ‘civilized’ with not a single civilian casualty in any of the battles.”  He explained as a second red-and-black DropShip this one clearly displaying the insignia of the Federated Suns took off.  “This was not to say that this was a bloodless battle hundreds of brave men and women have given their lives for the Raven Alliance and for the Federated Suns during these battles.  The WarShips FSS Killing Blow, FSS Jennifer Davion and our own White Terror were all destroyed in the naval battle above while in the fifteen battles on the ground more than two Federated Suns Regimental Combat Teams fought against our brave volunteers and Snow Raven warriors.  In the end the commander of the Federated Suns force Marshal Max Riemelt led his forces to six victories against our defenders while the remaining nine battles went to our defenders.”  Shakeel Hussein explained “while this has netted the Federated Suns a production run Deimos OmniMechs for their efforts, the Raven Alliance victories have secured Alpheratz and the gains made during the recent conflict with the Federated Suns.”  Hussein explained as another explosion occurred behind him this wasn’t unexpected as a huge Conquistador-class DropShip shot along the ground and took off heading towards orbit.  Hussein was silent as the roar of the DropShip’s huge engines carried it into the upper atmosphere.

“Now the Federated Suns leaves the Raven Alliance in peace.  In the days of the Succession Wars a nation state would fight until it was exhausted but now in the time of the Clans a battle for honour leads to the end of this wasteful conflict between our nations.  The Federated Suns has lost the battle for Alpheratz and it has lost the war with the Snow Ravens but both sides have agreed that there will be no further conflict between us.”  Hussein said as a group of ten Raven Alliance aerospace fighters flew over the camera “at least now.  I am Shakeel Hussein, of the Alpheratz New Freedom Journey, reporting live on the 9th May 3115.”

Trials of Possession
Rasalhague Dominion/Coyote OZ
Occupation Zone
11th May 3115

In a series of Trials of Possession several worlds are exchanged between the Rasalhague Dominion and Clan Coyote.  Both sides restrict themselves to honour trials of no more than a Cluster engaging the other Clan in the battles.  In all the Coyotes come out on top over six trials adding four systems Mozirje, Feltre, Basiliano and Thannhausen to their occupation zone while the Rasalhague Dominion seize control over Carse and Glauzzo from the Coyotes.  In these battles the ground fighting is seen as little more than training for the Clusters involved with no collateral damage taken by any of the forces involved.

Nuclear Incident
Sudeten City, Sudeten
Jade Falcon Occupation Zone
19th May 3115

A nuclear explosion envelops Sudeten City, the official capital of the Clan Jade Falcon Occupation Zone, the casualties are massive but less than they would have once been as the Jade Falcons had spent the last ten years all but abandoning the city and Sudeten itself.  For decades the Jade Falcons had been giving up parts of their occupation zone to forward their goals deeper in the Inner Sphere and Sudeten had been strip mined by the Falcons for all of its worth.  During that period of time only a single garrison cluster had been based on the world while all other scientists and leadership had moved elsewhere in the OZ.

The Jade Falcon Watch begin a short and an immediate investigation into the explosion but for all intensive purposes the Falcons abandon Sudeten once and for all soon afterwards allowing the Hell’s Horses to take control over the radiated planet.  Within days of the Hell’s Horses take over they command all survivors from Sudeten City to abandon the grounds of the city and move elsewhere on the planet naming Sudeten City as a no-go zone for the population of the planet.  A Hell’s Horses investigation suggest that the explosion could have been caused by an undermaintained Jade Falcon reactor which may or may not have been tampered with by unknown persons.

Resource Raids
Magistracy of Canopus
Periphery
22nd May 3115

In a series of raids McCoy’s Malcontents pirate band raid several systems of the Magistracy of Canopus striking at Kleinwelt, Thraxa and Vixen taking salvage from all three systems as they continue to try and rebuild the Mechs that are stored on Whittington.  In each of the battles Amanda Cavalcanti is allowed by Schuyler McCoy to join the unit in battle in her restored Griffin GRF-1A despite being someone who had been coopted into the unit she fights for the unit and does not attempt to leave the pirate band.  From the resources taken in the Magistracy the Malcontents’ techs restore a Koschei and an Icarus II BattleMech to operational status adding them to the defences of Whittington.

Trial of Possession
Savonburg, Draconis March
Federated Suns
28th May 3115

After recent victories by the Nova Cats claiming the systems Kiza, Rentz, McRae, Rosiclaire and Vandalia and Federated Suns counter attacks which claimed Hortense Hogdell and Jessup the Nova Cats and Federated Suns agree to end the current conflict between them on a world not touched by the recent combat.  On the world of Savonburg Khan Canin Rosse meets with Field Marshal Paul Bowmen of the Federated Suns Crucis March.

With a simple Trial of Possession fought over by the Delta Keshik and Bowman’s own First Tikonov Cossacks RCT the “war” comes to an end between the two nations with the Federated Suns force victorious ending the conflict between them.  The fighting has told both sides several things the Federated Suns has realized that it is not the nation that can fight on multiple fronts and they have now seen the Nova Cats as a threat.  While many within the Federated Suns desired to see the Nova Cats kicked back into their Den the nation has been battered on all fronts and needs time to regain its strength.  While the High Command of the Federated Suns is confident of a victory against the Nova Cats over the long term the wars with the Raven Alliance and Draconis Combine have sapped the AFFS strength and desire for battle.  The Nova Cats could wait until their next conflict.

The Nova Cats have secured what they wished to in the production world of Crofton and gained retribution for the attack by Tyler’s Terribles against their nation overall they have lost control over several systems and have lost a lot of bloodied troops but they have also gained valuable experience.  Internally within the Clan they have also realized that they need to deploy bigger formations of ground troops and bigger WarShips to counter those of the Federated Suns.  During the battle for Savonburg the Nova Cats deploy clan-tech versions of the Gallant and Thanatos BattleMechs in battle both already produced on Crofton showing the worth of the world to the Clan.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Good update DC.

Thanks I forgot to mention here but I will as its due.  The Raven/Suns conflict originated with forum member Vition2.  I wrote it based off notes we came up with together.  Originally the plan was a bit bigger but I scaled it back as I did it solo
