Star League Protectorate

Founding: 30th January 3063

Capital: Unity City, Terra, Sol System

Leader: Duke Bannister Cameron

Size in 3095: 42 systems

Overview

The genisis of the Star League Protectorate could lay at the feet of Morgan Hasek-Davion, the Commanding-General of the SLDF at the time of its founding, or with Stefan Amaris when he turned on the Cameron family and the four Succession Wars that followed it.  No-one can deny that the Succession Wars were brutal to the worlds that had formerly been occupied by the Terran Hegemony every world regardless of the nation they belonged to suffered greatly during these wars as they were fought over by the various Succession Lords wishing to be crowned the new First Lord.

With the founding of the Second Star League Defence Force many individuals saw it purely as defenders of the SLDF others however saw the SLDF having a grander purpose in the defence of people across the Inner Sphere and as a force capable of stopping wars.  When Morgan Hasek-Davion wished to increase the size of his SLDF the Sirian Concordance plea for assistance was the first stepping stone towards a new nation.  By 3095 had forty-two worlds, all the worlds that had formerly been part of the Chaos March and several more from the Succession States, spreading from Brodon to Fletcher and from Yorii to New Canton and Augustine.  It also took in the far flung worlds of Valerius near the Marian Hegemony and Davetal II in the Taurian Concordat and centred on the birthplace of humanity Terra.  Some of the Succession Lords have begun to consider the Star League Defence Force as a threat that will one day need to be dealt with while other nations and leaders see it as a stabilizing force in the centre of the Inner Sphere and beyond.

At its founding the defence force of the Star League Protectorate numbered only six regiments of the reborn SLDF with the addition of the Sirian Concordance this size increased and with Outreach and Northwind and their home born defenders the Wolf's Dragoons and Northwind Highlanders Brigades can be classed as part of its defence; although neither Mercenary Brigade is officially listed as part of the Protectorate's or the SLDF's strength.  The SLDF can also call on 28 WarShips four of which are Casper M5 Drones salvaged from the Terran system's Kuiper Belt or converted Lola-class Destroyers which had been too badly damaged to continue to fight as conventional vessels.

To think that the SLDF are the Protectorate's only defences would be a mistake; in recent years there has been resources spent on training and outfitting almost a dozen Guard Regiments.  Although officially the Guards are listed as SLDF line troops and they follow the order of the Commanding-General each unit is dedicated to the defence of their homeworld over all else meaning that they are unlikely to be deployed beyond the Protectorate and instead are dedicated to its defence.  As many of the Guard units act as "feeder" commands for front-line SLDF units the loyalty these units have for the Star League Protectorate has passed onto the rest of the SLDF.

The leader of the Star League Protectorate is not by default the First Lord of the Star League Defence Force, who more often or not is the leader of one of the bordering Succession Lords.  Instead the leader of the Star League Protectorate is elected from the leaders of the member worlds of the Protectorate.  As of 3095 Duke Bannister Cameron of Liberty is the leader of the Protectorate he has held this position since 3088 after retiring from the SLDF and command of the Second Royal Armoured Cavalry Division.  Being a direct descendant of the Cameron family many have asked when Bannister will become First Lord of the Star League, something that he continuously talks down, Bannister leads the Star League Protectorate from his base on Liberty.

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.
