A Force Appreciation circa 3025 for the Inner Sphere Powers
« on: September 03, 2011, 03:46:06 PM »

Hey guys.  This is something that I have been working on for a whole now.  Taking the Random selection tables for the Great Houses (and the TC) in 3025, and then assigning them by percentages to the ‘Mech formations we know about, we can see pretty much just exactly what every Successor State has available (with an unknown fudge factor built in).

Now, since it is 3025, I figured every Regiment averages 100 BattleMechs—less than full TO&E, but appropriate for the time period.  Some elite Regiments were probably at 100% (or greater) of book strength, but a lot were not.    I have also included under each House what ‘Mechs they locally produce in 3025, which would be their primary source of replacements other than battlefield salvage.  Remember, at this time production is just barely keeping ahead of losses, and that is without a major Succession War currently being fought.

None of the listings below include mercenaries.

Anyway, use it as you will.

Until next time, my friends,

Master Arminas

House Davion

78 Regiments (Approx. 7,800 ‘Mechs)
Note:  Training cadre not included, but March Militas are.

Assault (5%; 390):  84 Atlas; 84 Victor; 49 Charger; 35 Awesome; 35 Cyclops; 27 Battlemaster; 27 Banshee; 27 Stalker; 13 Zeus; 7 Goliath; 2 Striker

Heavy (20%; 1,560):  296 JagerMech; 276 Marauder; 138 Rifleman; 116 Dragon; 116 Grasshopper; 92 Archer; 92 Crusader; 92 Quickdraw; 92 Thunderbolt; 92 Warhammer; 45 Catapult; 45 Ostroc; 45 Ostsol; 23 Orion

Medium (45%; 3,510):  635 Phoenix Hawk; 535 Enforcer; 372 Vulcan; 320 Dervish; 266 Trebuchet; 214 Assassin; 214 Centurion; 214 Shadow Hawk; 214 Whitworth; 158 Blackjack; 158 Hunchback; 106 Hatchetman; 52 Griffin; 52 Wolverine

Light (30%; 2,340):  476 Javelin; 332 Locust; 294 Wasp; 276 Firestarter; 258 Stinger; 223 Valkyrie; 147 Hornet; 110 Commando; 110 UrbanMech; 38 Jenner; 38 Ostscout; 38 Wolfhound

Domestic Production:  Hornet (Talon); Locust (New Avalon); Wasp (New Avalon); Valkyrie (New Avalon); Blackjack (Kathil); Phoenix Hawk (New Avalon); Centurion (New Avalon; Panpour); Enforcer (New Avalon; Talon); Dervish (New Avalon); Griffin (Marduk; Talon); Wolverine (Marduk); Rifleman (Talon); JagerMech (Quentin; Talon); Marauder (Kathil; Quentin); Victor (Quentin); Atlas (Quentin)

As you can see, four production worlds are constantly under the threat of invasion or raids:  Marduk and Quentin on the Draconis border and Kathil and Talon on the Capellan border.  Panpour is not quite as exposed, but it is vulnerable to a strike from the Concordat.  However, roughly one-third of the entire FS production is concentrated on New Avalon, which is mighty far for a raid and heavily defended under normal circumstances.

House Kurita

77 Regiments (Approx. 7,700 ‘Mechs)
Note:  I do not include training cadres in this mix; however, I did add the Otomo, 1st & 2nd Genyosha, and the five Ryuken Regiments.  This puts Kurita and Davion closely on par, which is how I always pictured them.

Assault (10%; 770):  308 Charger; 104 Battlemaster; 77 Victor; 64 Atlas; 64 Banshee; 64 Stalker; 51 Awesome; 26 Goliath; 12 Zeus

Heavy (25%; 1,925):  290 Dragon; 262 Warhammer; 233 Quickdraw; 172 JagerMech; 146 Archer; 146 Grasshopper; 146 Ostroc; 118 Crusader; 118 Marauder; 118 Rifleman; 88 Catapult; 88 Thunderbolt

Medium (30%; 2,310):  452 Wolverine; 416 Whitworth; 342 Shadow Hawk; 302 Phoenix Hawk; 190 Hunchback; 152 Griffin; 152 Trebuchet; 152 Vulcan; 114 Scorpion; 38 Cicada

Light (35%; 2,695):  625 Jenner; 466 Panther; 466 Wasp; 258 Locust; 258 Spider; 258 Stinger; 208 Javelin; 104 Firestarter; 52 Commando

Domestic Production:  Jenner (Luthien); Panther (Jarrett; New Oslo); Phoenix Hawk (Jarrett; New Oslo); Wolf Trap (Luthien--PROTOTYPE); Dragon (Luthien); Quickdraw (Luthien); Archer (New Oslo); Charge (Luthien); Hatamoto (Luthien—PROTOTYPE); Mauler (Luthien); Atlas (Na’ir).

Much fewer production facilities than House Davion, but far more heavily concentrated in the interior of the realm.  The Wolf Trap and Hatamoto (both lvl 1) are currently undergoing trials for acceptance, while the Mauler is already in limited production.

House Liao

50 Regiments (Approx. 5,000 ‘Mechs)
Note:  Many Liao line units have only two battalions, so I have adjusted the overall numbers here—on the generous side, I may add.

Assault (10%; 500):  112 Stalker; 78 Battlemaster; 51 Charger; 51 Cyclops; 43 Goliath; 35 Atlas; 35 Banshee; 35 Striker; 35 Victor; 25 Awesome

Heavy (25%:  1,250):  272 Catapult; 170 Warhammer; 106 Crusader; 106 JagerMech; 106 Orion; 106 Thunderbolt; 85 Archer; 85 Marauder; 64 Grasshopper; 44 Cataphract; 42 Quickdraw; 42 Rifleman; 22 Ostsol

Medium (45%:  2,250):  618 Vindicator; 326 Clint; 254 Phoenix Hawk; 218 Hunchback; 182 Cicada; 148 Wolverine; 108 Dervish; 108 Trebuchet; 108 Vulcan; 72 Blackjack; 72 Griffin; 36 Scorpion

Light (20%:  1,000):  209 UrbanMech; 188 Stinger; 163 Jenner; 163 Locust; 88 Wasp; 75 Firestarter; 75 Raven; 25 Valkyrie; 14 Javelin

Domestic Production:  Locust (Ares); Raven (Sian); Vindicator (Capella); Shadow Hawk (Tikonov); Wolverine (Nanking); Crusader (Tikonov); Thunderbolt (Tikonov); Cataphract (Tikonov); Striker (St. Ives); Victor (St. Ives)

The Capellans have their production most spread out, since every world is easily in range of raids and deep-strikes.  Tikonov, however, is their industrial powerhouse and heart—although the new facilities on Grand Base (not yet operational—scheduled to begin production in 3027) will provide more redundant capability.  I have the Raven and Cataphract (both lvl 1) already in service in 3025, in limited numbers.

House Marik

56 Regiments (Approx. 5,600 ‘Mechs)

Assault (10%; 560):  120 Awesome; 120 Stalker; 110 Battlemaster; 70 Cyclops; 40 Goliath; 40 Zeus; 20 Charger; 20 Zeus; 20 Banshee

Heavy (20%; 1,120):  200 Warhammer; 160 Archer; 160 Crusader; 120 Orion; 100 Grasshopper; 100 Rifleman; 100 Thunderbolt; 80 Quickdraw; 60 Marauder; 20 Catapult; 20 Ostsol

Medium (40%; 2,240):  398 Hermes II; 354 Phoenix Hawk; 302 Trebuchet; 257 Whitworth; 147 Cicada; 147 Centurion; 147 Griffin; 147 Hunchback; 147 Shadow Hawk; 110 Dervish; 47 Wolverine; 37 Vulcan

Light (30%; 1,680):  358 Javelin; 332 Locust; 270 Spider; 270 Stinger; 270 Wasp; 120 Firestarter; 30 Panther; 30 UrbanMech

Domestic Production:  Flea (Asuncion; Bernardo); Locust (Gibson; Stewart); Stinger (Calloway VI; Keystone); Wasp (Kalidasa; Shiro III); Spider (Tematagi); Cicada (Gibson); Hermes II (Irian; Shiro III); Vulcan (Tematagi); Phoenix Hawk (Keystone); Hunchback (Kalidasa); Trebuchet (Irian; Kalidasa; Stewart); Griffin (Oliver); Scorpion (Oliver); Shadow Hawk (Calloway VI); Wolverine (Gibson; Thermopolis); Ostsol (Connaught); Quickdraw (Savannah); Rifleman (Thermopolis); Crusader (Asuncion; Bernardo; Oliver); Thunderbolt (Keystone); Warhammer (Wallis); Marauder (Gibson; Wallis); Orion (Kalidasa; Kendall); Awesome (Irian; Savannah); Goliath (Oliver); Battlemaster (Keystone); Stalker (Shiro III)

Wow.  If the Mariks every get their stuff together, these forty factories can allow them to out-produce the Lyrans.  But like THAT will ever happen!

House Steiner

53 Regiments (Approx. 5,300 ‘Mechs)

Assault (15%; 795):  221 Zeus; 190 Atlas; 88 Banshee; 88 Stalker; 74 Victor; 59 Awesome; 45 Cyclops; 15 Battlemaster; 15 Goliath

Heavy (25%; 1,325):  283 Grasshopper; 170 Catapult; 152 Warhammer; 132 Orion; 114 Rifleman; 94 Crusader; 94 JagerMech; 94 Thunderbolt; 76 Archer; 76 Quickdraw; 40 Marauder

Medium (35%; 1,855):  244 Blackjack; 220 Phoenix Hawk; 192 Hatchetman; 140 Clint; 140 Shadow Hawk; 140 Trebuchet; 140 Whitworth; 111 Cicada; 111 Centurion; 111 Griffin; 111 Vulcan; 111 Wolverine; 84 Assassin

Light (25%; 1,325):  232 Locust; 205 Stinger; 197 Commando; 128 Firestarter; 128 Wasp; 103 Spider; 77 Falcon; 77 Jenner; 77 Panther; 51 Javelin; 25 Hornet; 25 Wolfhound

Domestic Production:  Locust (Furillo); Stinger (Coventry); Wasp (Furillo); Commando (Coventry); Falcon (Hesperus II); Firestarter (Coventry); Wolfhound (Tharkad); Vulcan (Coventry); Hatchetman (Hesperus II); Phoenix Hawk (Coventry); Griffin (Hesperus II); Rifleman (Twycross); Crusader (Tharkad); Thunderbolt (Sudeten); Archer (Alarion; Hesperus II); Warhammer (Sudeten); Marauder (Alarion); Zeus (Hesperus II); Battlemaster (Pandora); Stalker (Twycross); Banshee (Hesperus II); Atlas (Hesperus II)

Twenty-three separate production centers on eight worlds for ‘Mechs, but definitely with a bias to the big boys.

House Calderon

Approx. 12 Regiments (Approx. 1,200 ‘Mechs)
Notes:  This is not a listing of TDF Regiments, but rather their approximate strength expressed in Regiments.

Assault (5%; 60):  16 Awesome; 16 Stalker; 12 Striker; 8 Atlas; 4 Battlemaster; 4 Victor

Heavy (25%; 300):  72 Warhammer; 55 Archer; 55 Marauder; 55 Thunderbolt; 18 Rifleman; 18 Crusader; 9 Catapult; 9 JagerMech; 9 Quickdraw)

Medium (40%; 480):  60 Griffin; 60 Hunchback; 60 Hatchetman; 60 Phoenix Hawk; 60 Shadow Hawk; 30 Assassin; 30 Blackjack; 30 Centurion; 30 Dervish; 30 Scorpion; 30 Wolverine

Light (30%; 360):  98 Locust; 98 Stinger; 98 Wasp; 32 Commando; 18 Javelin; 8 Ostscout; 8 Spider

Domestic Production:  Locust (McLeod’s Land; Taurus); Stinger (Illiushin; McLeod’s Land; New Vandenberg); Wasp (Perdition; Taurus); Commando (Illiushin); Griffin (Illiushin); Thunderbolt (Pinard; Taurus); Archer (New Vandenberg); Warhammer (Pinard; Taurus); Marauder (New Vandenberg; Pinard; Taurus)

Pretty good concentration, pretty good designs, but you just wait and the TPTB will take them away from us.  Just you wait now!

All right, so that’s it.  Hope that you can use the info contained within.  Have a great day!

Strictly speaking, those manufacturing centers are as of 3039, as they don't agree with the 3025 House books.  Then again, I also come up with a different number of regiments for each house (particularly Calderon, which has 8 regiments of 3 battalions and 1 of 2 battalions in 3025), so I guess I'll chock it up to the confused state of BattleTech's history.

Yeah, but there is isn't much change in actual factories between 3025 and 3039--just in who controls them!  And, like I said in the TC section, it is approximation of the total Taurian forces in Inner Sphere terms.  Remember each of TDF battalions has four companies (26 battalions @ 4 companies each, plus Regimental HQ lances plus Corps command companies; or about 111 companies) is roughly equal in 'Mech strength to 12 IS Regiments (3 battalions with 3 companies each for a total of 108 companies).  Especially since I have included a small amount of 'wasteage' by giving each Regiment only 100 'Mechs to account for damaged or destroyed units that have not yet been replaced.

As for the House numbers, I tried to keep with 3025 canon for Marik, Steiner, and Davion (but didn't include the NAIS and other cadres and training battalions).  Kurita is mostly canon, but I've added a few units to keep them closer in size to the Feddies--where I have always thought they should be.  Liao has a lot of 2-battalion and even some 1-battalion regiments, so what I did for them was total the battalions and divided by three:  came up with around 48.5, so I just made them an even 50 regiments strong (garrison battalions of Urbies rounding out the totals, of course!  What, you thought all those UrbanMechs were line units?).

Anyway, hope you like it.

MA

EDIT:  Oh, and I did change a few things on the Random Tables, getting rid of the lvl 1 Star League Designs (for the most part) and trying to bump up numbers of 'Mechs that each state actually produces in their field forces.  But they are (for the most part) pretty close to the RAT as written for 3025.

Well, according to my read of the 3025 books, the breakout is as follows:

These do include training cadres (which are used in active service, after all) but do not include mercenaries:

Davion: 73 regiments/RCTs (8 Guards, 7 Avalon Hussars, 3 Syrtis, 6 DLC (19 Battalions), 8 Crucis (22 Bns), 3 Ceti, 2 Chisholm's, 2 Robinson, 2 New Ivaarson (7 Battalions), 1 Argyle, 1 Aragon, 1 Cap Dragoons, 1 Kittery Borderors, 1 Fed Suns Arm'd Cav, 10 DMM, 7 Crucis MM, 7 Capellan MM, 3 NAIS).  61 RCTs, 12 regiments, a total of 221 battalions.

Kurita: 62 regiments (5 SoL (20 battalions), 11 Dieron, 7 Rasalhague, 8 Galedon, 7 Benjamin, 6 Pesht, 3 Arkab, 3 Prosperina (10 Battalions), 3 Vega, 2 Night Stalker (7 battalions), 4 Sun Zhang, 2 An Ting, 1 Altenmark).  62 Regiments, a total of 193 battalions.

If you add the Genyosha (which in 3028 was an overstrength battalion) you'd get 194.  You could add the Ryuken for 5 regiments/15 battalions, but I don't until post-4th War because they essentially never saw active service; every time they went to war they got destroyed until 3039.  But that'd still only give you 67 regiments & 209 battalions.  But you also added the Otomo, so 68/212.

Marik: 55 Regiments (3 FWL Guards, 16 Militia, 1 Atrean Hussars, 3 Atrean Dragoons, 1 Marik Guard, 6 Oriente Fusil, 5 Oriente Hussars, 5 Regular Hussars, 3 Orloff, 5 Defenders, 3 Sirian Lancers, 2 Stewart, 2 Protectorate).  I couldn't find any examples of Marik forces being reinforced to 4 battalions, or understrength to 2, so assume a standard 165 battalions.  This is where our numbers were closest.

Steiner: 52 Regiments (3 Royal, 12 Lyran Guard, 9 Arcturan, 13 Donegal, 4 Skye, 11 Lyran Reg).  Again, details are sketch for 3025 as to if any were over/understrength, so I assume only 156 battalions.

I'll buy your reasoning for why the TDF is over-strength, though I note there's no basis for it in the 3025 Periphery book; I run the extra company per battalion as part of the buildup between 3025 and 3065, because it's a smart way to increase the size of their forces by 30% without being obvious about it.  But in Periphery 1st Ed it says, "Taurian units are similar in composition to their Inner Sphere counterparts," (pg 76) which I interpret as 3 companies per battalion at that time, though I can buy someone going with "similar" not being "exactly the same" and using it as an argument for 4 companies/battalion.

I don't have detailed notes on the composition of the Liao military, regiment by regiment, I just see a line where I say they had 127 battalions of regulars (and 34 of mercenaries).  127 battalions would be ~42 regiments if they all had three battalions, but Liao has a bunch of 2-bn regiments and a handful that appear to be only 1 battalion.

These are my numbers that I was working with, there are some . . . shall we say inconsistencies . . . but they fit my own 3025 campaign well.  Anyway, I beefed up Kurita a bit (and oops, the training cadres were included in both Kurita and Davion when I rechecked by numbers  :-[ ) but this shows what I am working with here for the number of Regiments.  Except the TC, I haven't typed up the TC yet, but there are several discussions on this very board that talks about the 3025 TC and that it uses four-company 'Mech battalions across the board.

What we are missing is the numbers produced in each factory.
I know they were in House Liao Sourcebook but I don't remember seeing them in the other Sourcebooks.

Planet   Rank   Efficiency   Production
Aldebaran   8   C      10
Ares      5   C      25
Betelgeuse   7   C      30
Grand Base   2   B      55
Sian      6   B      60
St.Ives   4   B      65
Sirius      3   B      65
Tikonov   1   A      90

I looked at the others and here are the small pieces of info I could find
Corean Enterprises on Jeratha produces 130 'Mechs a year

The House Marik book is the only one to provide such detail, unfortunately, and there are all sorts of holes and inconsistencies with that chart, which I noted in The Problems of Reasonable Logistics.  But at least it's not as bad as some of the early figures for JumpShip production, which claimed that in the whole Inner Sphere only about a dozen new JumpShips were built each year.  It's also worth pointing out that in 3025 the Capellans had the worst economy in the Inner Sphere, but were still able to build brand new mech factories.  Makes me wonder what the other Houses had that was new.

The above info comes from House Liao Sourcebook, House Davion Sourcebook and as you pointed out House Marik Sourcebook.

House Marik Sourcebook went into a lot of details.
After cross-checking the info I found in House Liao Sourcebook and Master Arminas has found, there seems to be a problem (unless some planets have more than one name).

What inconsistencies did you turn up, Ice?  The factories that MA cited look like they come from TRO 3039, which finally tells us, for example, what was produced at the Kallon facilities on Bernado & Asuncion: the Crusader; the Flea is also produced by Earthwerks on both planets, which doesn't make much sense and seems like it should be a misprint.

The Nanking facility is listed as producing Wolverines and Riflemen in 3039, when the world is in FedCom hands.  It is possible that the facility was nonoperational under Liao, and that the FedCom refurbished it allowing it to produce Wolverines again.  Thus we don't need to worry about Nanking.

Capella is certainly an issue, but it's been cited as the production facility for the Vindicator ever since TRO 3025 (though the House Liao book from that time period claims Earthwerks developed the Vindicator; that is clearly wrong).

Since Grand Base won't become operational until 3036ish (per 20 Year Update), we could do a little hand-waving and say that Capella should have the statistics listed for Grand Base.  The Vindicator is always claimed to be built there, and it's supposed to be one of the mainstays of House Liao's forces, so 55 mechs per year would be about right.

Aldebaran & Sirius aren't listed as manufacturers of any BattleMechs in TRO 3039; for Aldebaran, this makes some sense; if it's only producing ~10 'mechs per year, it's hardly a "primary" factory.  Which still leaves Sirius, of course.

I've always fixed the problems with this chart by just replacing the worlds that don't produce mechs with ones that do.
Aldebaran is probably supposed to be Tao Mech Works on Styks.  I usually substitute Capella for Sirius (but the argument could be made that Capella should have the best production capacity in the CC.)  As for Betelgeuse I make that into Nanking.  I think the basic data of the chart is correct, just the lack of fact checking in the early days of BT led to planet names being changed.

I thought that perhaps some stellar systems could have two or three names.

While they could, and I recall some discussion that a handful of planets have been renamed, each of the planets on that Liao list can be found on maps in pretty much all eras.

But there are also some names which get used more than once, such as Alphard (FWL & Marion Hegemony), Hamilton (FWL and Lyran), Cadiz (DC and TC), Cameron (Lyran & FWL) and Camlann (FWL & DC), which can lead to some confusion.  And the FWL is the largest offender, stealing names from all over the Inner Sphere.

Would love to get a list of those dual planet names - just gave me another idea for the FWL!  ;)
