A Merc Lance working for House Davion
« on: April 01, 2015, 03:11:58 PM »

I was thinking about the composition of a Merc Lance working for House Davion in 3026.
Since I wanted to give it a Davion feeling somehow, a classical feeling (2 Heavies, 1 Medium, 1 Light) and to be able to move at the same speed, I cam up with this

2* QKD-4H Quickdraw
1* DV-6M Dervish
1* VLK-QA Valkyrie

or

2* QKD-4H Quickdraw
1* GRF-1N Griffin
1* VLK-QA Valkyrie

or

1* QKD-4H Quickdraw
1* GRF-1N Griffin
1* DV-6M Dervish
1* VLK-QA Valkyrie

What do you think? Which one is the "best"? Should I go for other designs?

Option 3 seems the most merc to me simply cause all the Mechs are different. Feels like a hodgepodge from the good olde days rather than a uniform pair with something else. Of course this takes the composition to a single heavy (the leader), 2 mediums (workhorses), and a light (scout).

I agree with Tak on this. A merc lance in that era would not likely have two of the same types of 'Mechs unless you're using Bug 'Mechs. Keeping the same movement rates limits your choices in 3026. I'd also swap the Griffin for a Wolverine, noting the Davion love for autocannon.

The Griffin, Dervish, and Valkyrie all fit the AFFS (and associated mercs) of 3025 . . . but the Quickdraw was almost exclusively a Kurita BattleMech.  Sure, some have been salvaged as part of the AFFS, but this isn't a common design for mercs simply because most of the production goes directly to the DCMS.

Perhaps you might consider a Phoenix Hawk instead?  Bit faster than the rest of your lance, but it is also produced in the FedSuns (by Achernar on New Avalon) and fits the 3025-era concept that said the AFFS consisted (primarily) of medium-weight designs.

If you really want a 5/8/x heavy, then also consider either an Ostroc or Ostsol.  Both are out of production (so relatively uncommon), but can be found in all of the Great Houses and Periphery thanks to their wide-spread use during the Star League.  One variant of the Ostroc found in TRO:3025 features jump jets, so you can still get your 5/8/5 lance that way.

If you're not attached to the 5/8 movement profile I would go with:
Marauder
Rifleman
Enforcer
Withworth

(okay the Withworth isn't a light mech but it fits better then the Panther)

Alternate choices for this lance would include:
Warhammer
Thunderbolt
Jagermech
Archer
Centurion
Blackjack

Really, as long as there is an unbroken line of people calling themselves "Clan Nova Cat," it doesn't really matter to me if they're still using Iron Wombs or not. They may be dead as a faction, but as a people they still exist. It's not uncommon in the real world, after all.

Dumb answer: the Eridani Light Horse's jumping Thunderbolts, the Challenger variant of the Charger, anything unique to Wolf's Dragoons.

Thanks for the answers.
I had other ideas. I just need to gather the info I want before I get back to you.

Merlin.

Flea, Hornet, Falcon, Firefly, Hoplite, Shogun, Annihilator, Imp & Marauder II- all mechs either brought by Wolf's Dragoons or made popular by them.
Prior to 3030 I would also add the Wolfhound since it was only used by the Kell Hounds and the Dragoons.
