Lots of Alpha Strike goodies in today's first BattleChat:

Quote
Alpha Strike:
[18:20] <Nerroth> Apologies if this is covered by Quick-Strike already, but will Alpha Strike include rules for operating Land Air 'Mechs? With the recently-completed Spectral LAM project in mind, it would be welcome if those new minis (to include the Mk1 LAMs covered in stretch goals) were supported in the upcoming book.)
[18:23] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Hmmm. Doesn't seem so.
[18:23] <Nerroth> In that case, is that something that could be added in a future expansion or supplemental file?
[18:24] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Yup.

[18:25] <Nerroth> Speaking of Alpha Strike, how far in scale will the actions it will cover go? For example, will WarShips be supported in the starter book; and if not, could they be added to a future expansion?
[18:29] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Looks like there's minimal WarShip support. WOuld likely be a later supplement

[18:30] <Nerroth> Will AS include rules for both hex-based and hexless play?
[18:30] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Yes

[18:34] <Nerroth> Will the first AS book include the rules needed to support the "new" units and technologies (such as Nova CEWS) from the Wars of Reaving or the upcoming TRO3145 PDFs, or would those have to wait for later expansions?
[18:37] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Later expansions

[18:40] <Nerroth> Has there been any thought put in as to what era the presentation/cover art/etc for AS will be put in? I'm thinking of how StratOps has a Jihad-era cover, and how TW is currently presented as being in the midst of that era.
[18:44] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Likely Clan Invasion

[18:45] <Nerroth> I see. When it comes to AS expansions, woudl they be pdf-based, or could there be print books which further build upon the game engine?
[18:46] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - The first batch of Alpha Strike supplements are planned for PDF-exclusive release.

[18:48] <Nerroth> In the longer run, will the existence of AS as a product line in its own right have an affect on future TROs or sourcebooks? Will any of those latter books be more likely to include the AS unit cards included within, or would they have to go into the same queue as those currently waiting to go into the MUL?
[18:51] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Yes

[18:52] <Nerroth> How far along is Alpha Strike in terms of its development process?
[18:56] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - The core rules are done and are undergoing a crash playtest to verify workability. SUpplemental rules and other writing continue as we speak. Art, fortunately, is not that big an issue.

[18:59] <Nerroth> Is there a particular design choice that is making the Clan Invasion the most likely starting point for AS? (Is it as simple as there being unit card pdfs for the 3039 and 3050 TROs, or would there not have been enough room to start in the Jihad or Dark Age at this point?)
[19:00] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Not enough hard data on Dark Age units was available when production started, and art/miniatures are not yet up to Dark Age needs. Also, the fact is that the electronic properties out there are focused on roughly the Clan era of play, so we felt it would be more recognizable to new-ish players.

[19:02] <Nerroth> That leads me to a semi-related question; is there any particular issue with using the MW:DA/AoD minis/stands with the AS rules, or would those minis have to be re-based before they were compatible?
[19:06] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Legally speaking, the click-dial base concept is a property of WizKids Games, so we try to stay clear of using Dark Age minis in our present-day artwork.
[19:07] <SpaceCowboy1701> To clarify, though, N-scale miniatures will work with the new AS rules, then?

[19:07] <Nerroth> So, the large-scale adoption of AS to the Dark Age would be dependent on IWM getting more of the 3145 units done up in mini form? (And is there any word from that quarter on that happening in the near future?)
[19:08] <@Habeas2> Nerroth - Not really, since we continue to alow proxy minis. Just don't expect a lot of mini-based art support for the Dark Age before we have enough DA-era figures to show.

I agree. Scooby-Doo would be perfect for this.

Only if you don't have Scooby Snacks for me.

The news for Alpha Strike is solid, and it sounds more like something I've hoped to see for BT for some time. On a personal note, it doesn't change much for me, as my BT playing time is pretty much MegaMek based. It is still something I'd really like to see available for the game line, and it likely ties in nicely with the rather promising 3145 era.

Bad_Syntax is quite right.

CGL public relations are amateurish and do not support goals of professionally run corporation (I occasionally use Herbert Beas' posts as examples in my training lectures on how NOT to run corporate communications in a gaming industry).  There is no serious attempt to have any kind of coherent communications and everything is essentially a number of blurbs scattered across various forum posts through the site. The 3250 fiasco is rather excellent example on how to lose the plot completely. There was no carefully released information, just a deer caught in headlights followed by botched public relations spin as people started to ask more and more questions.

Ultimate goal of all companies strive to increase sales by rising hype of future products. This means that communication must be clear, concise and honest. Rambling discussion is bad, checked and validated weekly/monthly blog posts are good. They are also basis of hype as new items of future products are being published in regular basis increasing interest towards them. Being honest about problems helps too. Mongoose Publishing is a good example on how to do it correctly. Their annual State of the Mongoose is a excellent way to put out discussion on what is going to happen and why as well as what things were cancelled and why. For company this small the communications are vital as sales figures per product released are low.

Minerva, I know you have issues with CGL and how they conduct themselves, from earlier posts, so I'll keep this as short as I can, so we don't go completely off topic.

CGL do outline when they have issues, Leviathans being the best case, where they own the property outright.  With BT/Shadowrun, I assume they play it closer to the chest for the following reasons:

1. They don’t own the property outright;

2. Uniformed fans with larges axes to grind, for no really valid reason, in my opinion, tend to scream about the sky falling when ever they get the opportunity; and

3. They have likely learnt via hard experience that too much/too little communication, are as bad as each other with the BT fan base.

However, they can be masters at it when they choose to - Wars of Reaving, Interstellar Operations fan input and Leviathans being prime examples.

When there are issues they are open - The box set for BT, they told us what they could, when they could, Randall even blogged about it.  Leviathans issues are an open book (check their blogs/forum), and the issues with the company funds in the early days were explained as openly as you could expect.  Release dates are not given ‘till they are known, which is the best way to go, in my view.

As to communications in BT, I can't see what else you could want, as shown below:

BattleBlog (http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=159) - averaging 2.7/month, which is not bad;

Coming Releases (http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=474) - updated as needed;

Battle Chat (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,26155.0.html) - monthly chat with the LD, where he answers what he can;

Catalyst Asks You threads (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/board,84.0.html) - players involved in assisting with development;

Catalyst Interaction Boards (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/board,34.0.html and http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/board,41.0.html) - Asking your niggling questions made easy; and

The forums themselves (http://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php) - Where the main developers (Herb, Ben Rome, Paul, Oystein et al) answer many, many questions, even outside of the official interaction boards.

So, if that is not enough for you, or you have issues with a particular person, I can't see how that means that CGL is a catastrophic failure as far as communications go.

Never forget, CGL are not a massive corporation like GW or others, so don't expect the same level of corporate communications, as you are just setting yourself up for disappointment.

As to 3250, that was not, in my eyes, a fiasco.  They started to tease about the new era, to get interest up, as was done for WoR, but then a small, but vocally idiotic section of the fan base went completely berserk.  It was like watching Fox News in BT.  The only ones to blame there were the hard core pain-in-the-arses, who regularly go out of their way to make the CBT forums an unpleasant place from time to time and like to take whatever the Devs say, be it a little or a lot, and twist into something ugly, no matter what the occasion.

There, that’s my rant, little longer than planned and apologies for that.

Now back to our regularly scheduled Alpha Strike, which I wants NOW, as being a limited table top player, the advantages of a fast play BT game, supported by its own line of supplements appeals to me greatly.

Really can't wait for this one.

I just wish they hadn't killed the Battleblogs covering that issue when they redid the site. That seemed like a bit of a communication mistake to me, as those were something worth having around as reference.

BlackNova, tat rant was the most beutiful thing I have seen since my son was born.  thank you.

back to alpha strike, the big thing for me is going to be being able to play small unit combined arms games.  being a Wizkids fan of olde, I loved playing a game with a one mech, assorted vehicles and a handfull of infantry.  this expansion is really starting to look like it could live up to that standard.

I'm re-posting this summary from over on the Catalyst boards:

  • It will be a full-colour supplemental rulebook, in a similar vein as A Time of War Companion (in terms of its relation to the Total Warfare through whatever Interstellar Operations will end up being axis) but as a stand-alone introduction to the Quick-Strike game engine.
  • It will have support for both hex-based and hexless play.
  • It will most likely be initially presented as a Clan Invasion product.
  • The first batch of pdf expansions are in the works.
  • Certain unit types, such as LAMs (and whatever "new" toys we may get in 3145), are not covered in the first book, but are options for later expansions.
  • There is a somewhat limited WarShip presence in the core book, but they are more likely to show up in force in a later expansion.
  • More in-depth support for other eras (such as the Dark Age) might also be fodder for later expansions.
  • The core rules are done, and "crash" playtesting is afoot. Work on other written material for the project is in progress.
  • It should be released (fingers crossed) before the end of the year.
  • In the longer run, the existence of AS as "its own thing" may have an effect on future sourcebooks and TROs, in terms of how the unit cards for new toys might be presented.

How do people here feel about the (likely) placing of the book in the midst of Operation REVIVAL?

Personally, I would have preferred the book to have taken advantage of the current wave of Dark Age releases; but I suppose it would be as well to get the rest of the TRO:3145 PDFs out first, and then let AS make its own jump into this time period once the groundwork in "classic" BattleTech has been laid.

(I wonder if 3250, or whatever the post-Dark Age era will be, might have both its BT and AS presentations rolled out at the same time...)
